ECAL at the Youth Olympic Games – Lausanne 2020,09–22.01.2020,Lausanne On the occasion of the Youth Olympic Games – Lausanne 2020 , ECAL particpates in several projects. On the occasion of the Youth Olympic Games – Lausanne 2020, ECAL particpates in several projects: --- Design of the cauldron, medal trays and podiums The cauldron, the medal trays and the podiums are three of the most symbolic elements of the Olympic Games. Second-year Industrial Design Bachelor s students from the ECAL were tasked with designing them. The students had to meet certain operational constraints and technical requirements: The cauldron must be able to be supplied with wood pellets, the result of a partnership between several organisations in the Vaud region, including the Lignum Vaud, which brings together all the regional players in the wood sector. This ecological innovation makes this cauldron the most eco-responsible in the history of the Olympic Games. It must also be removable and an integral part of the Games legacy. The podiums would have to be assembled outside at the last minute, often on uneven ground. They needed to be solid, light and large enough for several athletes. The medal trays had to be big enough to hold both medals and mascots. Cauldron Design: ECAL (Bachelor Industrial Design) Student: François Lafortune Production: C-FOR! + Ecole de la construction This cauldron project took inspiration from “freeskiing” culture, seeking to reflect it in both style and substance. Freeskiing is the world of skateparks and snowparks, with which many young people are very familiar. The installation comprises a mini jump and a ramp, with the cauldron placed at the top. The project s designer, François, envisaged that it would be an integral part of the Opening Ceremony and that the cauldron could be lit by a freerider. After Lausanne 2020, the installation is set to be converted into part of a permanent skatepark for the people of Lausanne. Podium Design: ECAL (Bachelor Industrial Design) Students: Louis Bétin + Theo Luvisotto + Estelle Rougerie Production: Ecole de la construction The podiums juxtapose the outlines of three mountain ranges where the competitions are being held: the Jura mountains, the Vaud Alps and the mountains of St Moritz. So you ll be nice and warm, and all set to go cheer on your favourite athletes!” Mapping of the BodyCity Show Unique creation imagined for Lausanne en Jeux! - the animation program of the Youth Olympic Games Lausanne 2020 - BodyCity is a show where arts and urban sports meet in an impressive open-air setting, on the place Centrale of Lausanne. Five performances will take place in public on January 9, 11, 12, 18 and 19, 2020 at 6 p.m. "Bodies in fusion with the city", it is from this strong image that Nicolas Musin directed BodyCity, a contemporary show questioning the relationship of young generations to the city. On an open-air stage representing a city in constant mutation,more than 50 performers aged between 9 and 30 years will cross their disciplines from January 9, bringing together urban arts and sports suchas skateboarding, BMX, rollerblading, scooter, parkour and dance. Imagined within the framework of Lausanne en Jeux!, this show is above all a work of youth carried by art schools and urbandisciplines training centers established in the Lausanne conurbation. BodyCity was thus able to bring together different Lausanne actors such as the students of the ECAL (conception of video images) of the HEMU (composition of the original music and recording of the soundtrack), thedancers of the Ecole-Atelier Rudra Béjart (dance and percussion), JDS Events (hip hop, breakdance) aswell as the riders of La Fièvre and the tracers of X-Trem Move. A meeting between different cultures and disciplines that the director Nicolas Musin has managed to reunite in order to offer a unique and unprecedented show in Lausanne. The mapping of the show was thus created by the students of the Visual Communication Department (BA Graphic Design, BA Photography, BA Media & Interaction Design) under the direction of Vincent Jacquier, Angelo Benedetto, Jean-Vincent Simonet and Mitch Paone while editing was managed by Amaury Hamon and Clément Lambelet.
Body City Mapping of the Body City show Unique creation imagined for Lausanne en Jeux ! - the animation program of the Youth Olympic Games Lausanne 2020 - Body City is a show where arts and urban sports meet in an impressive open-air setting, on the central square of Lausanne. "Bodies in fusion with the city", it is from this strong image that Nicolas Musin conceived and realized Body City, a contemporary show questioning the relationship of the young generations to the city. On an open-air stage representing a city in constant mutation, more than 50 performers aged between 9 and 30 will cross their disciplines, bringing together arts and urban sports such as skateboarding, BMX, rollerblading, scooter, parkour and dance. A poetic and spectacular journey in the heart of Lausanne, where video, sound and light are mixed together! BRUTAL 003 To celebrate the Paris Photo 2019 edition, the Bachelor Photography students of ECAL, under the artistic direction of Nicolas Poillot, translated the music of the producer IKAZ BOI into images. The visuals, sometimes smooth and neat, sometimes dark and rough, were produced by listening to the new project BRUTAL 3: an intimate album oscillating between romance and darkness composed with instrumental tracks only. Exclusively, 500 unpublished and numbered vinyl copies were created especially for this occasion. For two days, ECAL invests the Au Roi gallery, inviting spectators to a sound and visual journey, in an ephemeral sensory space generated by a synchronous video installation. Fonds international d objets imprimés de petite taille,21.11–13.12.2019,Gallery l elac, Renens Du 22 novembre au 13 décembre 2019, la Galerie l elac (dans l ECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne) présente le Fonds international d objets imprimés de petite taille dans une version augmentée de l exposition – laquelle comprend plus de 200 projets. Cette collection propose un regard sur le graphisme contemporain à travers l intelligence des formes, des savoir-faire techniques et économiques d objets imprimés, de format ou de statut modestes. HD IMAGES Longtemps, l attention portée au graphisme s est focalisée sur l objet phare de la discipline: l affiche. La parenté formelle de ce support avec le tableau peint et la tradition des biennales et concours favorisaient la dimension spectaculaire de celle-ci au détriment d autres objets graphiques (invitations, flyers, ephemera, marque-pages, cartes de visite…). Les contraintes techniques ou économiques influent parfois fortement sur les projets: elles amènent à repenser les objets et à envisager des logiques d occupation et de diffusion différentes, en expérimentant d autres interstices où le graphisme peut se développer. Le Fonds international d objets imprimés de petite taille se déploie à travers des étagères à mi-chemin entre bibliothèque et lieu d archivage: chaque objet est présenté et peut être manipulé sur une boîte sur laquelle figure une notice permettant de contextualiser le sujet et découvrir l intelligence de la forme en écho au contenu. Ce fonds, constitué de plusieurs centaines de projets internationaux, est appelé à se développer et à augmenter au fur et à mesure de son itinérance. Fiction / 25 min Synopsis Alma, thirteen years old, visits her older sister, who lives in a commune in the countryside. A stolen cow and a young man live in the garden of the house. The young girl struggles to come to terms with this new reality. Comment "When you take the horns off the cows, they can t communicate." For this reason, a cow has been kidnapped and hidden in the neo-rural, revolutionary and contemporary community where Ramona, a fulfilled young woman, lives. Alma, Ramona s younger sister, comes to visit her for the first time. A teenager with a long and urban silhouette. She discovers her sister s life and it is in her alternately curious, impressed and critical eyes that we discover the other members who live there. Alma wanders among them. From the sensitive look of the teenager emerges a poetry that enlightens each one, here a young woman who anoints her hair with oil, there a handsome young man, an apprentice manufacturer of explosives, who shows her the effects of his mixtures. Something could happen between them... or not. Agnese Làposi has chosen to keep Alma at a distance from those she meets. With small touches, she draws a portrait of this reserved young girl who has difficulty mixing with others. Alma will remain fascinated by the cow. And why not? Comment Ava goes to stay with her grand father, François, a whimsical character reclused on the edge of the moutains, in the small village Les Enfers. Like a road movie, the landscapes pass by, François confides to Ava that he has lost Antoine, his dog. Granddaughter and grandfather go in search of him. They make it their quest. Like a pretext for their meeting. Snow and fog envelop them. The space closes in on them. In the absence of a trajectory where it can unfold, time becomes an instant. It is lived on the surface of the image, on the surface of the faces. The quest for the dog becomes the quest for the other, which we scrutinize to guess its relief, to detect its informal history. Ava and François go deeper into the forest. In the snow, the mark of their passage, of their mysterious presence to each other. Their paths diverge and then meet again. Une sélection de jeux vidéo propose des nouvelles manières d interagir avec la technologie. Aural Practices in Visual Arts The project is an investigation into the creative process of visual art through the concept of aurality, which explores sound, listening and auditory perception from a cultural perspective. It is about stepping beyond object culture to look at listening as part of the broader and richer cultural approach developed by studying the case of ECAL, its (human) actors and (non-human) agents. The aim of the project is to better integrate the issue of sound and listening in transmitting knowledge of art and artistic practices and to give students a starting point on which to develop critical and reflexive listening in their work. The results show in particular how actors influence sounds at ECAL. These acts of meaningful listening were observable thanks to a methodology involving artistic interventions using sound, in the form of disturbances of daily life in the school. The way in which the actors repair disturbances helps describe shared perceptions in action. Breaching experiments have given a detailed description of how the actors continuously define the meaning of the sounds or the absence of careful listening, depending on the interaction and the place in the school. The successive experiments, by confirming or diverging from the results of the one before, refine methods of privatising spaces by using audio equipment at the place of the group work. In short, the study shows the fertile ambivalence whereby no school sound is ever just a school sound. Elle a exposé dans des lieux prestigieux aux quatre coins du monde comme Art Basel à Miami et Bâle, le Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland, le Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis, la Gladstone Gallery à New York, la König Galerie à Berlin ou encore le Kunstmuseum Luzern. Challenge Debiopharm-Inartis 2018 The Debiopharm-Inartis 2018 Challenge gave a prize of 25,000 francs to a Vaud team, made up of students from the IMD business school, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPFL) and ECAL (Georg Foster, Garance Krengel - MAS in Design for Luxury & Craftsmanship). For my documentary film "Hunters" I had the pleasure to meet two men with an adventurous spirit. They share a peculiar activity that depends on wind. I sometimes had the impression to film grown children. Comment The three hunters of... "hunters" don t have guns but they take us on a poetic journey to hunt the weather probe! Benjmain Bucher follows them in their absurd, harmless and good-natured quest. He offers us a film outside of the economy, a stroll off the beaten path, a short moment of pure gratuity. Année Propédeutique et Centre de formation BCV/BCL ECAL/Année Propédeutique et Centre de formation BCV/BCL – une 15 ème exposition qui marque une collaboration de longue date La collaboration entre l écal et le Centre de formation de la BCV et des Banques Cantonales Latines (BCL) remonte à plus de 25 ans et cette année nous avons le plaisir d organiser la 15 ème exposition dans le cadre de notre partenariat. Pour le Centre de Formation BCV/BCL qui, dans son secteur d activité, forme en permanence une centaine de jeunes gens aux métiers de la banque, c est toujours un plaisir de pouvoir offrir une plate-forme visible à un groupe d étudiants de l écal. Les œuvres de cette nouvelle exposition resteront accrochées dans les couloirs et salons du Centre de formation BCV/BCL durant 3 à 4 ans, à la vue et au passage de milliers de collaborateurs des banques cantonales de Suisse romande qui régulièrement viennent en formation dans ces locaux. Une belle occasion pour eux d admirer ces travaux qui révèlent le talent très prometteur dont font déjà preuve les jeunes étudiants de l Année Propédeutique de l écal. L époque actuelle est aussi à la compétition et qui dit compétition dit récompenses aux lauréats. Trois étudiants, dont les œuvres ont été sélectionnées par un jury regroupant des représentants de l écal et de la BCV, ont reçu un prix en espèces. Dans ce concours, il y a donc des étudiants primés, mais en fait tous en sont ressortis grandis. En effet, au travers de cet exercice, chacun aura pu tirer des enseignements et enrichir, par cette expérience supplémentaire, son bagage de compétences. En cela, tous auront été gagnants. Née en 1979 à Los Angeles, Alex Prager est une photographe et cinéaste qui crée des scènes minutieusement orchestrées, s inspirant d un large éventail d influences et de références comme le cinéma hollywoodien, les films expérimentaux, la culture populaire et la photographie de rue. La nature très chorégraphiée de ses photographies et de ses films révèle la manière dont les images sont construites et consommées dans notre société saturée en médias, mettant son travail en relation directe avec des artistes engagés tels que Gregory Crewdson, Thomas Demand et Cindy Sherman. Représentée par la galerie Lehmann Maupin à New York et à Hong Kong, Alex Prager a exposé dans de nombreux lieux prestigieux, dont le MoMA à Manhattan, la Photographer s Gallery à Londres ou la Galerie des Galeries à Paris. Image Vevey × Confrérie des Vignerons From Lavaux to the Chablais region of Vaud, the world of wine was reinterpreted for a semester by students in their 2nd year of the Bachelor of Photography programme at ECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne, in collaboration with the Confrérie des Vignerons. Under the guidance of Jonas Marguet, photographer and teacher, the students used clues gathered in the field from the winegrowers. Selected and presented as part of the Festival Images Vevey, Elisa Ribeiro s Nuisibles series sheds light on an unexpected aspect of winegrowing. She paints a gallery of portraits of insects that ravage vines, using a scanning electron microscope. By reappropriating a scientific tool for artistic purposes, she reveals the extraordinary, invisible to the naked eye. This work questions the very foundations of the photographic image, the process of taking the picture being carried out here by means of a beam of electrons. These tiny pests appear like giant monsters, presented in large light boxes that evoke the illumination of microscopic observation.
