«ECAL Graphic Design» in Hong Kong,30.11.2016–25.03.2017,Experience Centre, Hong Kong In collaboration with the Hong Kong Design Institute (HKDI) and the Institute of Vocational Education (Lee Wai Lee), ECAL presents an exhibition of projects created by students of the Bachelor Graphic Design and the Master Art Direction. Images HD ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne has long been recognised as a world reference in terms of – amongst others – graphic design. Be it in designing books, catalogues, magazines or posters, typography or digital projects, ECAL students are able to embrace all fields of this discipline and to masterfully perform a wide variety of assignments. This success is largely based on a policy of workshops allowing them to learn from the best Swiss or international graphic designers directly on the school premises. With this in mind, ECAL has had the good fortune of welcoming in recent years leading figures such as Ludovic Balland, Bibliothèque, Mirko Borsche, Thomas Buxo, Veronica Ditting, Europa, Johann Kauth, Jürg Lehni, Ari Marcopoulos, Maximage, Young Na Kim, NORM, OK-RM, Brian Roettinger, Hansje van Halem, Cornel Windlin and Job Wouters aka Letman. The exhibition and book “ECAL Graphic Design” largely retraces projects conducted in the Bachelor Graphic Design and Master Art Direction courses over the past five years in the framework of these visits, but also of other courses which have contributed to the School s reputation. Hermann Eidenbenz Teaching Graphic Design Hermann Eidenbenz (1902–1992) was one of the first professionals in Switzerland to describe himself as a graphic designer. From the 1910s to the 1950s, he was involved in graphic design education in Zurich, Magdeburg, Basel and Brunswick, first as a student and later as a teacher. Starting from a broad research on historical type design education, the project culminated in the discovery of two consistent convolutes of didactic materials. A collection of glass plates documenting a lettering course in Magdeburg, Germany (1926–1932) and a set of student works reflecting a course in basic design exercises in Basel (1940–1943), both held by Eidenbenz as a teacher. Together with documents from private and public archives in Basel, Berlin, Brunswick, Magdeburg and Zürich, the outcome of the project sheds light on a significant chapter in Swiss graphic design, shortly before it became internationally known.Main applicantsECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne (project leader) Research team (researcher) (supervisor) (supervisor)Periodoctober 2014 – november 2016PartnersECAL/University of Art and Design LausanneDisseminationPublications Sarah Klein, Die Schriftklasse von Hermann Eidenbenz, in Maramm. IKEA: Essentials for Modern Living by ECAL,08–09.06.2016,Democratic Design Days, Älmhult On the occasion of the Democratic Design Days organised (8th and 9th June) at the IKEA headquarters in Älmhult (Sweden), Bachelor Industrial Design students present " IKEA Essentials for Modern Living by ECAL", a series of projects created in collaboration with the famous Swedish brand. If you only had 50 things to furnish your apartment, what would they be and look like? This was the starting point of the latest collaboration between the Swedish furniture giant IKEA and ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne. “A company like IKEA engaging with a school like ECAL challenges both parties around contemporary design practices and proves that Design can be collaborative as well as democratic” explains ECAL Director Alexis Georgacopoulos. In the prospect of the Democratic Design Days in Älmhult, Sweden, IKEA s Design Manager, Marcus Engman, and its design team invited 2nd year Bachelor Industrial Design students of ECAL to rethink basics, fundamental pieces of furniture and accessories for life and work at home - flexible and functional products - with a strong focus on affordability and sustainability. “Together with IKEA s design team, we tried to give the students a real taste of how it is to work with the largest furniture brand in the world: visiting their headquarters in Sweden and bringing them to factories in Poland. Something that only a handful of designers will experience in their career” says ECAL Head of Bachelor Industrial Design Stéphane Halmaï-Voisard. Under the guidance of designer Nicholai Wiig-Hansen, familiar with IKEA s values and work processes, the students produced a range of 50 essentials across all product areas, from chairs to cutlery, and textiles to lightings. As part of the design process, Wiig-Hansen wanted the students to work as a group, discover themselves, their strengths and weaknesses, and know where they can be valuable in a team. Nicholai Wiig-Hansen explains: “IKEA is about group effort, and I think teamwork is about designers leaving their ego aside for a moment and pushing together as a whole. This is something we unfortunately don t see enough in school projects where the process is often linear and idealised”. http://ikea.today/

Comme des Loups The Wolf patrol, led by Julie, a young scout leader, goes off wilderness camping in the mountains. Hugo, a high-ranking scout goes with them to assess the young woman s leadership skills. A film by Aude Sublet, photographed by Raphaël Dubach Fiction / 20 min Synopsis The Wolf patrol, led by Julie, a young scout leader, goes off wilderness camping in the mountains. Hugo, a high-ranking scout goes with them to assess the young woman s leadership skills. While the young wolves have fun, Julie recalls her first camp when Hugo was a handsome, young scoutmaster. Comment How to film certain scouting rituals? How to frame a group of children? How to get closer to the natural light in the mountains? Raphaël Dubach, student cinematographer, and the young director Aude Sublet answer these questions. Together they have found the right distance to look at, forming an almost organic duo. Like wolves is filmed with grace and fluidity, mainly with a handheld camera, in sumptuous yet never illustrative settings. Between the darkness of the night games and the whiteness of the day, the love desire of the adult scouts oscillates, under the inquisitive and amused gaze of the "little wolves". They point their guns at the cashier, who despite their yelling, fails to react the way they d expected… Comment The din of an automatic door slamming. The din of a freezer motor. The deafening ventilation of an air conditioner. A very close-up on a hearing aid. Welcome to the ear of Martien, a young man with a hearing impairment, employed in a gas station, who, one night, is going to undergo an extraordinary experience... Maxime Pillonel s challenge is to make us see, hear and, above all, make his handicap an expressive force, just like his hero. The distortion of the sounds, the precision of the deaf dialogues, the sustained rhythm of the editing, the overkill of characters, each one more out of place than the other, make this comedy a fable on the difference. The choice in Martian is to make us laugh, and here, crack, boom, wizzz, it works! Bruno Deville / Director

Fedor Two young boys have stolen some expensive scarves and are being pursued. To get out of town, they hijack a young girl s vehicle. She ends up following them as they flee. A short film by Hugo Radi, photographed by Augustin Losserand Fiction / 25 min Synopsis Two young boys have stolen some expensive scarves and are being pursued. To get out of town, they hijack a young girl s vehicle. She ends up following them as they flee. Comment This title mixes literary reminiscences as the film does cinematographic references. As a spectator, one has the impression of never being in front of a narrative taken in hand and led to a good port, but rather that of assisting to the quickly tired hatching of a possible story. Nothing is completely accomplished and yet everything appears. The film is not that of its heroes (locked in their cage of fear, desire, disgust, innocence, their cage of childhood in too large bodies) but is another character (the fourth) of the improbable encounter between petty thieves and a bourgeoise. And it is a clever way of Hugo to tell us nothing of the difficulty of jealousy between two brothers, of the desire that wanders, of the defeat of bare feet against the mechanics of drones, but to make us feel, hear, experience them. Of adolescence (no longer an easy theme for a graduation film but a sort of obligatory subject) Fedor is proof of this through the test. Jonas Scheu – Ma Yan Chan - Waves of Transition Since generations, the dockers and their families live and work at the Ayeyarwady riverbank in Mandalay, the ancient royal capital of Myanmar. In a time of great transition, their lifestyle is subdued to lasting transformations. Against their will, the authorities try to dislocate them into newly built concrete buildings. Documentary / 29 mn Synopsis Since generations, the dockers and their families live and work at the Ayeyarwady riverbank in Mandalay, the ancient royal capital of Myanmar. In a time of great transition, their lifestyle is subdued to lasting transformations. Against their will, the authorities try to dislocate them into newly built concrete buildings. Comment On a boat, the silence is disturbed by morning noises and we can gradually guess, between the waves, a transition, a place where people live as best they can with solidarity, resistance and dignity, distrusting the promises of a better future. The transformation of a society is too often done on the backs of the underprivileged, their vital space being threatened for the benefit of others. With an extraordinarily fine eye, Jonas Scheu allows us to discover a historical moment in Burma. His aesthetic choices, in the service of a human perspective, support the protagonists in pale, luminous and transparent images. Audrey Bersier – UnderWater Valentina is waiting for her brother Dino. They re going to spend Easter together. Only this time, Dino will be accompanied by Leonore. Fiction / 17 min Synopsis Valentina is waiting for her brother Dino. They re going to spend Easter together. Only this time, Dino will be accompanied by Leonore. Comment Italy. A childhood home. The sweetness of a grandmother. The strength of a relationship between a brother and a sister. Valentina is younger, a teenager, and she will remain so forever. She is dead. And she does not understand that one can grow old, fall in love, move away from childhood to make one s own life like Dino who comes back to introduce the woman he loves. The resolutely poetic point of view of the script met the very beautiful incarnation of its young actress who knew how to magnify it, to go beyond it. Curiously, the character of the ghost, Valentina, is the most alive of the film. She lives an eternal present, a demanding adolescence that each shot manages to render with sensitivity. And because she loves her brother, because she understands that he must live far from her memory, Valentina decides to leave, to die again, in all discretion. Raphaëlle Desplechin / Screenwriter

Having studied graphic design at ECAL, Ian Party and Maxime Buechi founded Swiss Typefaces in 2003, a company that designs typefaces that can be purchased from their online shop. They create complete alphabetic character sets that are comprised of about 800 different signs, which in part are composed of upper and lower case letters along with numerals. These two friends have known each other since their teenage years, 14 years old to be exact, they used to graffiti the streets of Lausanne together. Always knowing they wanted to be independent to create their art, they established themselves under the name B&P Typefoundry and gained some notoriety as a great force in the type design world when creating some custom typefaces for publications and companies like Vogue, L Officiel, Esquire, SangBleu, Mugler and more recently SKY TV and the City of Stockholm. As of 2011, Emmanuel Rey who also studied graphic design at ECAL joined the team and is now co-CEO and design director, with Ian Party. The company was renamed Swiss Typefaces the same year. These two designers now sit on the board of directors and oversee all affaires and creative decisions for the company. www.swisstypefaces.com

The Embarrassment Show After ECAL in June 2015 and Unseen Photo Fair Amsterdam in September 2015, ECAL Bachelor Photography students present "The Embarrassment Show", an exhibition curated by Erik Kessels, cofounder & creative director of KesselsKramer (Amsterdam), at the NRW-Forum Düsseldorf from 20 November to 10 January. --------- The Embarrassment Show A workshop and exhibition curated by Erik Kessels cofounder & creative director KesselsKramer (Amsterdam), with Bachelor Photography students. “Embarrassment is important. If you re not willing to humiliate yourself, make mistakes and downright fuck up, you should consider working in a cubicle farm. It s safer there. Because as a creative person, you ll be called an idiot at least once a day. That s okay. Making mistakes and risking embarrassment, even failure, is how you make progress. Without it, you ll be stuck in the same old safe zone: not embarrassed, but not better either. In other words: boring. So if we want to do this thing we love – making stuff – we mustn t be afraid of looking stupid. In this workshop and exhibition I stretched the abilities of 2nd year ECAL Bachelor Photography students to the limit. By embarrassing themselves they are able to tell a personal, often awkward and risky story. This gives them an opportunity to explore an area of photography which they would probably not have dared to touch.” Erik Kessels

Grégory Casares – Belle Comme un Coeur Rosie, 12 years old, will pact with a witch in order to be accepted by the other children. Animation / 12min Synopsis Rosie is a little girl marginalized because she s ugly. Her classmates victimize her constantly. One day she meets a witch, old and lonely who makes her wish come true instantly. Now there s no one prettier than Rosie. But she will soon understand that there is nothing more empty than the fleeting, fragile mask of beauty. Commentaire In a black and white of great elegance, Gregory Casares tells the story of the difficulty of taming one s appearance and the spells of love. Quoting Tim Burton or Miyazaki, Gregory invents a magical world with disturbing contours whose interstices reveal the beauty of childhood, but also its cruelty. Fred Guillaume / Director

pauline amacker – Shadia and Saphira This atlas describes the relationship between two Métis sisters who lived in Switzerland and then in Cameroon after their parent s divorce. They haven t seen each other for 5 years as the eldest came back in Switzerland. They kept in touch through Facebook messages and looking at them points out a cultural gap. Shadia and Saphira s duet was forged through separation and their striking resemblance leads to confusion. They are proud of their dual identity but saddened to be rejected in both countries. My aim is to discuss physical distance within the family and question cultural barriers. Rhona Mühlebach – Off the Highway She s riding an E-Bike while he is on a normal one. The road is steep. Fiction / 22min Synopsis Roman and Linda are a couple that don t have much in common anymore besides drinking Bloody Marys. They go on a bike trip across the Swiss mountains. Roman rides a normal bike although he is out of shape. Linda rides an electrical bike. Their trip quickly becomes more complicated than expected. The couple find themselves at a crossroad and must make a choice. Comment The film Abseits der Autobahn tells a story of love at the end of the road. Rhona dissects the question of desire between a man and a woman, and it is breathless and on the verge of an asthma attack that they reveal their relationship that is unraveling, the darkness of their feelings, in other words, the passage of time with its indelible traces. In a natural setting in the midst of the changing seasons, in a film in motion that plays on the stretching of time, in its relationship to the actors, in its mastery of space, Rhona asserts her aesthetic choice and her influences. Christophe Saber – DISCIPLINE It s 9:30pm in a grocery store in Lausanne, Switzerland. The place is run by Egyptians. In a moment of anger, a father looses patience and disciplines his disobedient child. Fiction / 10min Synopsis It s 9:30pm in a grocery store in Lausanne, Switzerland. The place is run by Egyptians. In a moment of anger, a father looses patience and disciplines his disobedient child. A shocked customer immediately intervenes to express her concern. Other customers join the conversation, they each put in their two cents and the staff is swamped. This discussion turns into a debate, which into quarrel. The situation gradually gets out of hand and into chaos… Comment Discipline is a choral movie that not only asserts its form with elegance and brilliance, working on the unity of time and place, but also forcefully captures the way in which cultures, languages and prejudices can confront each other, following a small prosaic incident that takes place in a convenience store and inexorably degenerates. Or how the singularity of a situation can support a universal subject, enriched by the director s uncompromising eye. ECAL at Design Miami/ Basel,16–22.06.2014,Design Miami/ Basel On the occasion of Design Miami/ Basel 2014 (17 to 22 June), ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne, in cooperation with The Woolmark Company and Mover Sportswear, presents “In Wool We Trust”. This exhibition pays tribute to various qualities of wool with set-ups produced by Product Design Master students following a workshop led by designers Ronan Bouroullec and Camille Blin. (Brochure) (Video) (HD Pictures) “Wool as a material is part of our everyday life. Even without a specific shape or colour, it means something to each one of us. Our task was to experiment in order to shape these sensations”, say Ronan Bouroullec and Camille Blin, the designers in charge of this project at ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne. Taking a prospective approach, Mover Sportswear, a Swiss brand which pioneered the use of wool in technical ski clothing, and The Woolmark Company, the global authority of wool and owners of the iconic Woolmark logo, turned to ECAL to revisit this natural fibre. Based on a very open brief, Ronan Bouroullec and Camille Blin led students in the Product Design Master programme to work on large-scale installations and to rethink this material which is often confined to handicraft, furniture or clothing. The six projects on display stage wool in a poetic way and surprise visitors with an offbeat approach. Each set-up tells a story that highlights the many qualities of merino wool. The lightness of a single thread which flies off, the transformation of wool through its manufacturing process, colour plays – the variety of approaches taken by the students creates a rich set of works to nurture and change our vision of wool as a material. “In Wool We Trust” at Design Miami/ Basel Preview Press Day (by invitation only): Monday 16 June 2014 Exhibition open to the public: Tuesday 17 and Wednesday 18 June, 11.00 to 20.00 and from Thursday 19 to Sunday 22 June, 11.00 to 19.00 Hall 1 Süd, Messe Basel, Messeplatz, Basel, Switzerland www.designmiami.com Information ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne 5, avenue du Temple, Renens Case Postale, CH-1001 Lausanne Suisse/Switzerland Tel.: +41 21 316 99 33 Email: ecal@ecal.ch www.ecal.ch www.mover.eu www.woolmark.com

Julia Bünter – Deadline Adrienne is about to turn 30 years old. She realizes she s never had an orgasm. She decides to get it by any means. Fiction / 19min Synopsis Adrienne is about to turn 30 years old. She realizes she s never had an orgasm. She decides to get it by any means. Charlotte de Rufz – Flaunting it Leo, a young inexperienced actor, finds himself one night into the clutches of Astrid, an all-powerful film director and devourer of men. Fiction / 17min Synopsis Leo, a young inexperienced actor, finds himself one night into the clutches of Astrid, an all-powerful film director and devourer of men. Together in this upper class woman s home, they engage in a courtship, both sensual and distant, unequal and versatile, in which they try to lead the other into the place of their fantasy. Commentaire Constructed as a love duel, Parades features a director and a young actor who meet, for one evening, in the apartment of the latter. Games of seduction, moral confrontation, verbal jousting, complex desires punctuate this "Kammerspiel" in an incisive and frontal way. And this, until the dizziness of the confusion of the kinds, capturing in hollow a poignant melancholy. Frédéric Mermoud / Director
