ECAL LECTURE – JEAN-CHARLES DE CASTELBAJAC,18.03.2025,IKEA Auditorium, ECAL An avant-garde designer and artist, Jean-Charles de Castelbajac anticipated what today constitutes the basis of new creation: art and fashion, detour and collaboration. Multi-disciplinary work of Jean-Charles de Castelbajac - art, fashion and design - revolves around a short chromatic range of blue, yellow and red, one of the finest representations of which was to dress Pope John Paul II, bishops and priests for the 1997 World Youth Day. Passionate about heraldry, the science of coats of arms, vexillology, the science of flags, semiotics, the study of signs, pop art and the world of childhood, his art and fashion bring together these dualities: the epic, the historic, the traditional and the alternative. He has collaborated with many artists, including Keith Haring, Lady Gaga, Robert Mapplethorpe, Pedro Winter and Pharrell Williams. He began his career as a designer alongside his mother, setting up Ko & Co in Limoges. His first obvious garment was a coat cut from his boarding-school blanket, as well as clothes made from mops, thus launching the concept of upcycling. He went on to found the Jean-Charles de Castelbajac fashion house in 1978. As early as the 1980s, he anticipated the current decompartmentalization of art and fashion by collaborating with artists of all disciplines on his shows: musicians, photographers and visual artists. He worked with Miquel Barceló, Ben and Robert Combas to create tableau dresses, with Robert Mapplethorpe, Keith Haring and Cindy Sherman to create invitations for his shows, and with Malcolm McLaren to create the music for his shows. In 1986, he was exhibited at New York s Fashion Institute and Technology. In 2006, at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, then at the Musée Galliera in Paris in 2007. Also an artist, he created a 3700 m2 fresco for Orly airport in Paris in 2015. In September 2018, he created a monumental work for the Biennale des antiquaires de Paris at the Grand Palais. From 2018 to 2022, he is artistic director of United Colors of Benetton. His artistic work is the subject of an exhibition entitled Le Peuple de Demain at the children s gallery of the Centre Pompidou in 2021-2022, presented at the West Bund Museum in Shanghai and at the Centre Pompidou Malaga in 2023. In 2022, he will also be present at the Mobilier National with the scenography for the exhibition No taste for bad taste, retracing 40 years of French design, and with a carte blanche entitled L atour d assises, focusing on French styles. In June 2024, he installs a 15-metre trellis sculpture on the wall of the Société de Géographie in Paris, called “L Ange Géographe”. He was chosen by the Diocese of Paris to design the liturgical vestments and ornaments for the reopening of Notre-Dame de Paris in December 2024.DATES & SCHEDULE18.03.2025 6pm Free entryVENUEIKEA Auditorium, ECALWEBSITEjeancharlesdecastelbajac.com

Le pavillon de l élégance Each group was tasked with creating a series of fashion images by appropriating or subverting visual codes from existing images. Everyone approached this exercise with creativity, exploring a variety of references, whether iconic fashion shots, works of art, or visuals from popular culture. Once all the series were completed, they were compiled into a printed and bound magazine. The assembly of the images gave rise to a unique object, where each project found its place within a coherent and visually striking whole. This magazine thus became the tangible trace of this collective exploration of fashion imagery and its multiple reinterpretations.

In the rooms of L Appartement, , ECAL Bachelor Photography Graduate, presents A Home with No Roof, her award-winning Diploma project for the Prix Images Vevey x ECAL 2023. A Home with No Roof is a series of photographs in which the photographer evokes the dysfunctional home of her childhood. Using models and self-portraits, she recomposes the interior of her home, imbued with often painful memories. The project plays on the familiarity and strangeness of the ordinary. Through an immersive installation, each piece extends the essence of the images, blending scales and textures to blur the boundary between reality and its reproduction. The project reveals the artist s vulnerability and power of emancipation through the plastic and playful potential of photography.DATES & SCHEDULE27.11.2024–16.03.2025 2pm-6pm Wednesday-Sunday Free entryVENUEL Appartement – Espace Images Vevey Gare CFF de Vevey Hall principal (2e étage)OPENINGWednesday, November 27 2024, 5:30 pmWEBSITEimages.chGUIDED VISIT WITH THE ARTISTThursday, 30 January 2025, 6pm Places are limited, please register before Monday 27 January at communication@images.ch

Sara De Brito Faustino winner of the Prix Françoise Champoud 2024 Congratulations to photographer Sara De Brito Faustino, ECAL graduate, who wins the Prix Françoise Champoud 2024, an award that will support the development of her promising artistic career. The Fondation Françoise Champoud has just awarded its annual prize to talented photographer , an alumnus of ECAL. The prize, endowed with CHF 50,000, is awarded alternately in the fields of lyrical art, performing arts and art & design, supporting high-potential emerging artists. Sara De Brito Faustino, awarded in the art & design category, won over the jury with her striking artistic project, which explores the meanders of memory through disturbing and poetic images. Graduating with a Bachelor s degree in photography from ECAL, Sara De Brito Faustino distinguished herself with her graduation work A Home with No Roof (previously named “A Home With No Roof”), a project that had already won her the Vevey Images Prize at the ECAL graduation ceremony in 2023 . His singular approach consists in reconstructing, from fabricated and cobbled-together elements, scenes evoking missing memories, like fragments of recomposed reality. According to Florence Grivel, journalist and member of the jury, her work is “powerful and gripping, in which an ambivalent and troubling reality is narrated, in which the missing memory is restored from surprising elements”. Winning the Prix Françoise Champoud is a major boost for this young photographer. “This financial support is a precious help that will enable me to pursue my projects and devote myself fully to my art”, confided Sara. The artist plans to exhibit her project A Home with No Roof in its final version at L Appartement, Vevey, from November 27. This monographic exhibition will mark a crucial stage in her career, revealing to the public a universe that is both intimate and universal, shaped by meticulous and singular artistic techniques. Sara De Brito Faustino, who is also an academic assistant at the ECAL, is determined to build on this success, with the support of the Champoud Foundation. Her passion for photography, born in adolescence and nourished by intense personal experiences, is now recognized by prestigious institutions.

Tom Grbic – Imagine ne pas pouvoir fuir, performance continue de la tolérance et de laa raison Imagine not being able to run away is a continuous performance lasting the whole day. It aims to show the principle of ‘trans work theorised by Josephine Gilles Harris in 2019. J. G. Harris highlights, among other things, the fact that queer people need to maintain a constant performative state in order to be able to navigate the world in an ‘understandable way. With an activation of texts by Laurène Marx, Tom Grbic, Josephine Gilles Harris and Adel Tincelin, it is also an effort to inscribe ourselves in a lineage, a critical and welcoming queer History.

Ana Francesca Bălan – Studiu de mansardă (Attic study) Studiu de mansardă (Attic study) is a collection of family artifacts reassembled into frames carrying questions of value, heritage, haunting, and the archive as a speculative tool.

Vietnamese objects: The material culture of resilience in the face of (de)colonisation Cà phê (coffee), atisô (artichoke), xi nê ma (cinema), căng tin (canteen) or xi-măng (cement): in the Vietnamese language, many words bear the imprint of a French origin. And what if the same were true of everyday objects? Somewhere between cultural anthropology, the epistemology of Vietnamese design and the sociology of objects, this research project analyses the production of objects in Vietnam in the light of French colonisation and decolonisation. Through reportage, interviews and research carried out in various archive collections, this book sets out to reveal the mechanisms by which objects, foods, materials and know-how have been integrated into Vietnam until today they can boast authentically Vietnamese characteristics. Like an archive of the present day, through the prism of design and the applied arts, the authors take a decolonial and critical look at the creativity and adaptability of a country that has succeeded in appropriating the techniques of a dominant power.Main applicantQuang Vinh Nguyen Émilie LaystaryResearch teamQuang Vinh Nguyen Émilie Laystary Cynthia Mai Amman Chi-Long TrieuPeriodJuly 2022 – April 2024Supported byECAL/University of art and design Lausanne Réserve stratégique de la HES-SO (RCDAV)ContributionsEric Panthou Kai Nguyễn Lưu Chữ (Quoc Huy Le, Đức Cao) Mắt Bét Nhat Thanh Le Tien Dat Vu Thai Ha Vu Trong Đặt Nguyễn Quoc Huy Le Vincent Yuen Ruiz Xuân-Hạ Vu

Julie Richoz receives one of the Grands Prix de la Création de la Ville de Paris 2023 Congratulations to designer Julie Richoz, ECAL graduate and winner of the Grands Prix de la Création de la Ville de Paris 2023. For 30 years, the City of Paris has renewed its commitment to the creative professions each year. In 2023, the Grands Prix de la Création de la Ville de Paris will reward 7 winners: 3 Grands Prix, 3 Emerging Talents and 1 Fashion Accessories Prize. The Grand Prix rewards a professional for the quality of his or her project and career path, development strategy, commitment to the transmission of know-how or innovation. This prize is aimed at experienced professionals, companies and brands whose development is well advanced. A 2012 graduate of a Bachelor Industrial Design from ECAL, worked with designer Pierre Charpin from 2013 to 2015. Winner of the Grand Prix du Jury at the Villa Noailles Design Parade in 2012, which enabled her to work with CIRVA (Centre international de recherche sur le verre et les arts plastiques), published by Galerie Kreo, she says she entered design practice with one-off pieces or small series. " However, I put a lot of energy into developing industrial projects, which then become accessible to a larger number of people. It s a different, more complex approach, where everything can come undone for a detail. That s why, when I saw the letter of intent from Inga Sempé, the President of the Jury, I wanted to present my work to her. She explained that she wanted to showcase singular but also industrial objects. (...) This proves that just because you work in series doesn t mean you can t be bold in language and form." says the designer, who set up her studio in 2012. julierichoz.com bdmma.paris

Adrien Beroud – Aire de Jeux Noé, an unemployed actor, auditions for a theatre play without knowing the codes. His performance triggers an argument between the director and his assistant who interrupts him. His audition is compromised. Noé wanders around the theatre and looks after Kenzaëlle, the director s daughter, in the hope of getting another chance. Before being adapted into a short film, Aire de Jeux was my Bachelor project: a feature film script and a satirical comedy in the world of contemporary theatre. Although the short film s story differs slightly, the two projects maintain a similar tone and directing stakes.

Ella Paleni – Trait de caractère The place of the graphic designer in the age of technological advances: today s world is in constant technological evolution, which raises questions about the place and role of the graphic designer. In this graduation project, I set out to explore this issue by adopting a resolutely manual and artisanal approach. I created a book from A to Z, using traditional manufacturing techniques, from the elaboration of the paper to the final binding. By moving away from the omnipresent process of digitalisation, I sought to express a need to return to the very essence of the graphic design profession. This project highlights the advantages of an artisanal approach in an increasingly digital world. It encourages reflection on the specific skills that graphic designers can bring to the table.

Oscar Rainbird-Chill – Point de Charge A proposal for a streetlight-mounted socket for charging electric vehicles for the city of Lausanne, in anticipation of the 2030 ban on non-electric vehicles. The focus has been to create a compact design with an appropriate level of visibility that references the familiar and established typology of cast street signage.

Tant qu il n y a pas de frottement, le mouvement sera continu,01.06–24.09.2023,Espace Mercerie, Lausanne An exhibition presented by second-year Bachelor of Visual Arts students at the ECAL, as part of the "faits et gestes" course taught by Philippe Decrauzat, in collaboration with VU.CH, art in hospital. "Rue Mercerie" has always been a hotbed of artistic activity. Between 1970 and 1996, the Rivolta gallery exhibited a large number of modern and contemporary artists. In this cobbled street, which has been linked to Lausanne s art history for many years, a common reflection was born: how can an exhibition space be shaped and questioned? A connection is made between the outside and the inside of the art space. The main feature of the street, its severe slope, is transposed into the space in the form of an oblique platform. Various works are presented on this platform, blending the collective with the individual. By modifying the floor, the behaviour usually adopted in an exhibition space is disturbed. The traditional point of view is disrupted, allowing a different approach to the space and the works. Audiences are invited to descend into this space and experience what this layout can offer. The impact not only of the space but also of the history of the place on the experience of an art installation is reminiscent of a principle that underpins the VU.CH programme at the CHUV - Centre hospitalier universitaire vaudois. Art in the hospital context is much the same as in a museum or gallery, but it is experienced differently, not least because of the configuration of the spaces.DATES AND SCHEDULEFrom 1 June to 24 September 2023 Open every Saturday, 11am-2pm Free entryADDRESSEspace Mercerie Rue Mercerie 22 1003 LausanneWEBSITEvu.chuv.chOPENINGThursday 1st June, 6pmSTUDENTS, , , , , , , , , , , Seline Symons, dans le cadre du cours faits et gestes donné par .

Dissolution of genres and austerity in prise de vue The workshop focused on the dissolution of genres within photography: documentary, fashion, still life and portraiture. Students built bridges between commercial and artistic practice.

Fiction film workshop with Thierry de Peretti The 2022 fiction film workshop was lead by Thierry de Peretti. Head of workshop: Related workshops : (cinematography) (editing) "For the fiction workshop of the second year class that the ECAL film department entrusted me with, I proposed to Camille Anker, Mégane Brugger, Pol Barrelet, Naïla Ebinger, Benjamin Eggenberger, Matteo Friberg, Donika Gashi, Rose Higorom, MariaLuisa Vaz, Hervé Ossent, to think together about the idea of "adaptation". Being myself in the throes of the exercise with my next feature film, adapted from a novel, it was a way to connect in the most obvious way with them. When we talk about adaptation we often think of the novel, but everything can be adapted, a play, a poem, a short story, a film, a part or a few lines of a novel, an article or an interview, a memory, a dream, a text that we have written ourselves. What seems important to me is the way in which one translates, understands, betrays or is faithful. I also asked them to be as economical as possible in the means they used to shoot: few shots, no camera movements, no special effects, no external (artificial) light, as few locations as possible. We were going to work together on what would be some of their first films and I wanted to encourage them to make simple, quick, clean experiments, free from the will to seduce: films of self-taught people. I was deeply touched to see how each one of them took up the exercise, sometimes with an imperious and immediate intuition, other times by taking a steeper and more worried path. Today, ten new, free proposals remain, which in the end care little about the final result. These proposals are all clear and risky, both poetically and technically: they are films behind which we recognize each of the future filmmakers they will be tomorrow." Laurine Joyeux – Les mouches de Beni (Script supervisor) As a script supervisor, I worked with the director on her film, from the writing stage to the shooting. Fiction / 20 min Synopsis One evening, Beni, a young woman, meets her 65 year old neighbour Gégé. The two women become friends and Beni invites Gégé to discover her world through a surprising adventure. The birth of their cross-generational friendship will shed light on the complexity of bipolarity, a disorder from which Beni suffers. Music unites them and strengthens the core of their friendship. Student s comment As a script supervisor, I worked with a director on her film, from the writing stage to the shooting. I was involved right from the preparation stage, setting the timings. This first task helps detect the first inconsistencies in a scenario and to raise general questions about the rhythm. My priority on the set was to supervise the script, which is my main working tool, and to ensure that the intentions of each scene were respected. I monitored the film s continuity both in terms of the story s development and the acting. Another important function in my work was to anticipate the editing process, the aim being that at the final viewing, the story is as coherent as possible, which involves writing reports and gathering important notes for the editor. Laurine Joyeux

Alice Denyse – Les mouches de Beni (Direction) Beni, a young woman with bipolar disorder, forms a musical friendship with her 65-year-old neighbour Gégé. Student s comment Beni, a young woman with bipolar disorder, befriends her next-door neighbour, Gégé, a 65-year-old woman with a passion for her gospel choir. Bipolarity is a subject that touches me personally, since my grandmother Denyse, after whom I am named, was bipolar. In order to better understand this illness, I met people with bipolar disorder who helped me clarify the point of view developed in my film. This also helped me understand the importance of female solidarity for the people concerned. This is why I wanted to portray a relationship between two women where mutual care and support are essential. A colourful film to reflect Beni s vision: I wanted the viewer to identify with her. Alice Denyse Matthey

Solène Mercier – Les mouches de Beni (Photography) For my degree, I did the photography of the short film Les mouches de Beni, directed by Alice-Denyse Matthey. Student s comment For my degree, I did the photography of the short film Les mouches de Beni, directed by Alice-Denyse Matthey. This dramatic comedy tells the story of a young bipolar woman, Beni, who befriends her next-door neighbour, Gégé. A friendship grows between the two women, for better or for worse. Aesthetically, the work of lighting and framing depended on the interiority of the main character. To express her bipolarity, we went from a colourful and pop aesthetic to something darker and more subdued, to mark the transition from euphoria to depression. This light creation and the variations of frames create a unique style for a unique character and film. Solène Mercier

Morgane Cachin – Points de vue How can one see an image without the sense of sight? The Points de vue project features a photographic exhibition catalogue adapted to blind people. The catalogue includes different descriptive stages of the photographs as well as enlargements giving access to the details of the images. The use of Braille and raised images enables blind people to understand the photographs in the exhibition. This project is intended to be a sensory experience for both sighted and blind people. Audio guides accompany the descriptions to allow for complete inclusiveness. This project is a collaboration with the Images Vevey festival, for their upcoming exhibition Together – La vie ensemble which will take place at L Appartement.

Julie Corday – De taille d une mandarine « This is a physical and psychological trauma that took place in my childhood. At the age of 9, a stone the size of a tangerine hit my left eye. Today I am trying to reconnect the woman I am with the little girl who almost lost her sight 20 years ago through photography. Several surgeries and significant loss of vision gave rise to fears and anxieties of being blind or disfigured. By weaving links between my personal history, mental images and the perception of the world around me, I offer a story composed of my childhood words and visual metaphors to recount this accident.» - Julie Corday

Samara Krähenbühl – Il est passé tout à l heure, il m a dit de rien dire « At the turning point of the transition to adulthood, childhood and its memories re-emerge more than ever. Through a short film at the edge of video art, I question how to overcome one s traumas and reappropriate one s life experiences and grey areas. Because of its dreamlike character, the film takes on a surrealist tone. Through visual metaphors and mental imagery, I exorcise an intimate and painful episode of my childhood.»

ECAL presents "Time to Move" at De Mains de Maîtres, Luxemburg,20–28.11.2021,19 Liberté, Luxemburg At the end of 2020, UNESCO inscribed the craftsmanship of mechanical watchmaking and mechanical arts on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Always ahead of its time, ECAL has long been highlighting projects based on these age-old crafts through original creations produced as part of the Master of Advanced Studies in Design for Luxury & Craftsmanship. The De Mains de Maîtres Biennial from 20 to 28 November was the perfect opportunity to pay tribute to craftsmanship by presenting a selection of the best projects designed over the last ten years by students in the programme. The selection thus features modernised music boxes for the Swiss company Reuge; clocks in the form of kinetic sculptures that take the shape of a racing car or a hot-air balloon developed with Jura-based manufacture L Epée 1839; two unique pieces created at Mec Art in Sainte-Croix (a true watchmaking capital of Switzerland), one of which illustrates the harmony between the three mechanical arts typical of the region (watches, automatons and music boxes) and the other offers a play of colours based on the optical illusion of Japanese professor Akiyoshi Kitaoka. The works on display also include a series of wall and table clocks, whose marble from the Italian Marsotto manufacture creates a dichotomy between the majesty of the stone and the lightness of the movement. Hugo Hectus – Visite de Courtoisie — Vol. 1 Prix BCV | Visite de Courtoisie – Vol 1 is a 280-page art critical journal that recounts an 8-hour dinner performance on contemporary art that I organised at the Arsenic theatre (Lausanne, CH) with artists, curators, art historians and theatre programmers. For this first volume, VdC reflects on the models of ethical efficiency of the artwork as well as on curatorial dynamics, questioning the place of aesthetic experience in political art. Divided, like the dinner, into six acts announced by the broadcasting of audio excerpts and changes of light, the journal sets the transcript of the conversation against the guests feedback, enhanced by personal remarks, articles and critical essays that I collected.

Camille Donias – Chaise de cérémonie A ceremonial chair, an assembly configuration in front of a lectern. In this range of inexpensive furniture, the chair, often covered with a Lycra cover, offers diversity to adapt to different events. This dialogue between structure and cover, between skeleton and skin appears essential. A stainless steel structure, at least, is required since it will be covered. Lightweight, the chairs are easily stacked and can be hooked together to form a multiple. A cover forms the seat and backrest. The movable armrests give the chair several shapes and uses. This movement contributes to the change of perception of the chair. Rethinking furniture that is sometimes despised, where the banal and ordinary become a defect.

Hans Emmeneger - Fondation de l Hermitage During the retrospective organized by the Hermitage Foundation, photography students from ECAL/École cantonale d art de Lausanne pay tribute to this little-known artist. Without having seen his works beforehand, they explore his universe through the analysis of reproductions and some biographical elements. Throughout the semester, students delve into the mysteries of Emmenegger s work, pondering what his paintings could reveal under an X-ray scanner or how he would have used photography if given the opportunity. They employ contemporary techniques such as analog and digital photography, video, and 3D software to offer personal and poetic interpretations of his work. Their creations, presented as part of the retrospective, provide fresh perspectives on Emmenegger s oeuvre and invite viewers to discover this mysterious artist through the eyes of ECAL students. Cyane Findji – Le feu tue les yeux de la nuit Mention Bien “A man who cannot bring himself to sacrifice his daughter to the gods decides to build them a sanctuary so that they can stop wandering the plains and rest there as in ancient times.” Taking as a starting point a scenario that has fallen into oblivion, this project invites viewers to witness fragments of life in which humans and non-humans live in a dominant nature.

ECAL at Sculpture Garden, Geneva – Le cours de l eau,18.06–30.09.2020,Parc des Eaux-Vives, Geneva On the occasion of the Geneva Biennial: Sculpture Garden organized by artgenève and the MAMCO (curator of the exhibition: Balthazar Lovay) until 30 September 2020, students in 2nd year Bachelor Industrial Design from ECAL present a Bisse project in the Parc des Eaux-Vives. No doubt you have already walked, or dreamt of walking, along a Bisse in Canton Valais. A Bisse is a historical irrigation channel, many of which run through the idyllic Alpine landscape. Perhaps it was this romantic notion that inspired the National Exhibition of 1896 to recreate and display a “Mazot”, a typical wooden Alpine hut, albeit conveying a rather stereotypical idea of Switzerland. This larch wood hut, which could be considered as a forerunner of the circular economy, has been given a new lease of life for passersby to admire in the Eaux-Vives park. Is it a decorative object? Is it nostalgic? Or maybe folklore? The 2nd year Bachelor Indus-trial Design students at ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne, under the supervision of programme director Stéphane Halmaï-Voisard and their professor Adrien Rovero, have chosen to recreate the architecture of a traditional Bisse. This construction is also made of larch wood and includes several surprising features, starting with a viewing platform, a map of Lake Geneva, a water mirror and a simple bench to sit and contemplate a basic element: the flow of water. This project brings us closer to nature and makes sense in today s world where traditional values and local sourcing are being revived. Giulia Ferla – Ordinaire singulier, antiguide de Berlin Ordinaire singulier, antiguide de Berlin presents an unconventional way to discover a city and to look at it. We choose to validate our life experiences through pictures that disconnect us from reality and urge us to look for whatever passes as picturesque. My reflections are based on the work of five important thinkers and are presented in an experimental and purposefully provocative form, using the page as a support and a pacing tool. My own writings and the analogue photos I took during my visits to Berlin give a personal insight into this very symbolic city. All this situates human consciousness in space and time.
