Julie Ryser – Dupliréalité Dupliréalité aims to immerse us into reproductions of places of life that are essential to an individual s existence. The cities explored include La Chaux-de-Fonds, Lausanne and Renens, which have a direct link with my own reality. This research is based on a conceptual analysis of duplitecture, a recent architectural movement that replicates and relocates famous buildings. This analytical treatment takes place in a fixed medium, i.e. a book, a lasting object that has the power to cross the ages like a building and that comes to life through its materiality. The project reconstructs the process of a duplitect; thanks to the proximity of today s media, everything is within reach and distance disappears.

Jodie Rudaz – Same Landscape of Heaven And Hell “I remember an abandoned house, on the edge of the river. The river seems, at times, to want to cross the parapet. It has lost its mind, there s too much light for it. From here on, we should forget its name; but no more than we humans, rivers can t get rid of the first opinion that they have provoked in the collective mind. You will want to capture it, looking for the oval of a mirror to enclose it, but already the river is flowing towards other moments, always eager for new landscapes. A scent of honey will incite it to confidence: I am the face of everyone, the caress of the gaze that survives the gaze.” Valais de coeur, Pierrette Micheloud

Ana Marija Adomaityté – Suite “The pas de deux is a dance sequence built around a theme, often symbolic of a love story or the partnership inherent in love, with the dancers portraying expressions of affectionate feelings.” On a deep blue floor, a man and a woman perform the gestures of a couple: a contemporary pas de deux about the violence of the norm. If a classical pas de deux is meant as a celebration of love, I believe it is also necessarily the celebration of suffering in love. It is, par excellence, the performative structure in which the representation of heteronormative romanticism flourishes. Suite – a performance for two people – is a danced resistance to the norms of heterosexual love. Through the exhaustion of gestures, Suite challenges all-powerful romanticism.

Lucie De Martin – t-Plates With the increase in home deliveries, the accumulation of single-use packaging is becoming a problem. While biodegradable items are the trend, new laws are being considered to ban them because of their non-recyclable nature. The most promising alternative therefore seems to be reusable tableware. t-Plates are reusable boxes for food delivery. The aim of the project is to significantly reduce the amount of waste and to accompany users towards more environmentally-friendly consumption. In order to ensure that the ecological message is consistent, the use of plastic materials is replaced by materials such as steel, textile or rubber. The shape of the proposed containers and elements is a synthesis of the requirements.

Axel Bezençon – Being a ghost (Editing) Serge discovers what being a ghost is like but Martial, an old spirit, prevents him from having fun. Fiction / 19 min Comment I edited the short film Une vie de fantôme by Sebastian Friedmann. Working closely together, we structured the film to trace the trajectory of its main character, Serge, a young adult who is happy to be the ghost of the thermal baths where he worked when he was alive, but who soon becomes disillusioned, especially when he meets Martial, an old ghost who has been haunting the place for years. “Do, undo, do again, do something else. But always move towards the film that has been dreamed of.” This was our mantra. The same goes for my dissertation, which, through interviews with personalities from the Swiss film industry, discusses the importance of dramaturgy in editing and the following question: why are editors generally not recognised as authors? ECAL x MUJI: Compact Life A collection of clever furniture and household accessories to help organise everyday life. Following the method of carefully observing our daily routines to identify unique needs and then creating intuitive and practical products, the Bachelor of Industrial Design students imagined a collection of clever furniture and household accessories to help organise our daily lives, under the guidance of designer Michel Charlot. As an important part of the development of MUJI products is based on detailed photographic studies in people s homes, the students were invited to follow the same process by documenting the spontaneous state of their own homes and other people s environments in order to reveal how they interact with the products, and to identify how the objects are used as direct inspiration for their design.

ECAL celebrates its 200th anniversary (1821-2021),01.09.2021–30.04.2022,Various locations To mark this 200th anniversary, we are pleased to invite you to a varied programme of activities and events in Switzerland and internationally, highlighting contemporary issues and themes that lie at the core of ECAL s various disciplines, thus offering a reflection on the contribution of art and design to society. ECAL is delighted to celebrate its 200th anniversary (1821-2021)! In 1821, a decree of the Grand Council of the Canton of Vaud formalised the opening of the Ecole cantonale de dessin, housed in Cité-Devant near the Cathedral in Lausanne. Twenty years later, the school integrated the newly built Musée Arlaud, located in the city centre and which also bears the name of the first director of both institutions, Marc-Louis Arlaud. For almost 150 years, the establishment has had many personalities as directors, moved to various locations in the region and had different names, before finally settling on Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne in 1986. Since then, the acronym ECAL has become popular as the reputation of the institution has grown, and it is now considered one of the best art and design schools in the world thanks to the countless successes of its teaching staff, students and alumni. To mark this 200th anniversary, we are pleased to invite you to a varied programme of activities and events in Switzerland and internationally, highlighting contemporary issues and themes that lie at the core of ECAL s various disciplines, thus offering a reflection on the contribution of art and design to society. Real Facts A collection of neophyte views on current agriculture through the prism of design. Invited by the Musée des Arts Décoratifs et du Design de Bordeaux (madd-bordeaux), second-year Bachelor of Industrial Design students at ECAL, under the guidance of designers Erwan Bouroullec and Adrien Rovero, have given form to their observations and questions about the current agricultural landscape. "Real Facts" is a collection of neophyte points of view on current agriculture, through the prism of design. This project was created at the initiative of Constance Rubini, director of the madd-bordeaux, on the occasion of the exhibition "Paysans designers, un art du vivant" at the Musée des Arts décoratifs et du Design de Bordeaux (madd-bordeaux) presented from 14 July 2021 to 17 January 2022. With the precious support of the Association vaudoise de promotion des métiers de la terre Prométerre, and in the framework of the Summer University programme of the Direction générale de l enseignement supérieur (DGES) - Canton de Vaud.

"Real Facts" exhibition at madd-bordeaux,14.07.2021–17.01.2022,madd-bordeaux At the invitation of the musée des Arts décoratifs et du Design de Bordeaux (madd-bordeaux), the 2nd year Bachelor Industrial Design students from ECAL, under the guidance of designers Erwan Bouroullec and Adrien Rovero, have given form to their observations and questions about the current agricultural situation. REAL FACTS – Paysans designers, un art du vivant ECAL × madd-bordeaux 14.7.2021—17.1.2022 "At the very beginning of our discussions with Constance Rubini, director of madd-bordeaux, we expressed the fact that we are not specialists. However, what is interesting about agriculture is that everyone has an image of it, and in a way everyone as a citizen has a certain point of view about how productive nature should be conducted. But in the end, most of the time, our understanding of what actually happens on a farm is non-existent or patchy," explains Erwan Bouroullec. The intention behind "Real Facts" was to use design and installations to bring to light a number of "facts" and testimonies, allowing us to question the reality of today s agriculture: women are 33% represented in the profession; farmers take a maximum of one week s holiday per year; there are more than a hundred certifications in France; agriculture is the world s 2nd largest market for service robotics; in France, one out of four fruits consumed is tropical; a mushroom doubles in size every 24 hours, etc... From the side, one can discover coloured lines reminiscent of jumping bars, helmets and blankets, the lines of the roofs of Paris, the lines of Hermès. Its reflections make L illusioniste a simple object at first glance and yet surprising. Miroir Ailé Ricardo Beira This object is strongly inspired by equestrian products, which are the basis of Hermès history. The symbiotic interaction between rigid and flexible elements, creates an integrated whole that functions like biological systems, where one element reinforces the other, allowing both stability and movement. This spatial organisation forms a continuous field of tensions and compressions in constant balance, in a play of forces that defies gravity. As a result, the mirror appears to be lighter and levitates above the base, yet can be manipulated freely. Miroir à Courroie Maxime Zenderoudi Suspended lightly, this object intrigues with its large oblique loop, yet reveals a reflection that is perfectly true to life. The leather strap has a function that dictates its course. It envelops the mirror in a continuous movement, sometimes supporting, sometimes balancing and sometimes protecting it. The mirrored glass plays with appearances by borrowing its finishes from leather craftsmanship, with perforations and hand finished edges in a contrasting colour. Made integral by means of two straps, the elegant fluidity of the whole echoes the House s emblematic double-turn bracelets. Phi[Φ] Yosuke Shimano Mirrors reflect the world with light as it is. They look like they have everything, but they can also be seen as empty objects with no will. This is why I have called this mirror Phi[Φ] (group of emptiness). Phi[Φ] completes the loop handle through its reflection with playful, as if hanging in space, reconnecting you with your reflection. Both sides of the mirror are identical. This gives an ele- ment of playfulness inviting you to interact with it. Style H Chen-Ta Hsieh Inspired by the works of the De Stijl art movement, this piece attempts to introduce contemporary art into our daily lives in the form of a mirror. In line with the idea of a segmented geometric composition, functional sculpture and simplicity, I try to bring a new interpretation to Hermès while remaining in line with the visual and material direction of the brand. The extension of the marquetry language at the back creates the frame of the mirror. Part of the marquetry on the back can be detached to become a support for the mirror. The chamfer of the support gives the mirror a perfect angle for reflection. Aether Salman Rouhani This object gives the user a new perspective on their environment and allows them to play with perception. This wall mirror allows the user to see their whole body without the need for a large standing mirror.

Antonio D Elisiis – Hierax Antiqua Hierax Antiqua is a contemporary typeface family composed of 24 styles with text and display cut, suitable for editorial publication and identity projects. The typeface is inspired by an ancient book printed in Venice around 1750, with various punches cut in different periods (1550 – 1780). Hence the aim of the project is to capture the spirit of Renaissance and Baroque types by analysing the works of Nicolas Jenson, Francesco Griffo, Claude Garamont, Pierre Haultin, Robert Granjon, Hendrik van den Keere, Christoffel van Dijck, Nicholas Kis, Simon de Colines, Guillaume Le Bé, Pierre-Simon Fournier le Jeune and Giambattista Bodoni. Hierax Antiqua aims to crystallise this era with an added contemporary feel through rigorous digital design.

Swiss Graphic Design and Typography Revisited The research project Swiss Graphic Design and Typography Revisited is divided into three sub-projects: ‘Principles of Education , ‘Networks of Practice and ‘Strategies of Dissemination . This three-year project is the biggest research collaboration established in the design field since the SNSF began its activities. Swiss graphic design and typography are representative of Swiss culture, but have themselves also had an impact on this country s national identity. In the SNSF project Swiss Graphic Design and Typography Revisited, seven universities engage in joint research into the status of Swiss graphic design from today s perspective. Coordinated by the Bern University of the Arts, researchers of the universities of applied sciences from Basel, Geneva, Lausanne, Lugano, and Zurich, as well as from the University of Bern are participating. In the three sub-projects, mixed groups of researchers from the different institutions investigate into different aspects of Swiss graphic design – its teaching, its networks and its forms of publication. The result is a critical contribution to our understanding of the emergence and current self-perception of Swiss graphic design and typography. Above and beyond this, the project helps to consolidate ‘design history as a field of research and practice in Switzerland, and provides new, relevant findings for the international scholarly discourse on visual communication.Main applicantsHKB – Haute école des arts de Berne Arne Scheuermann Michael Renner Sarah Owens Peter J. Photographie et arts plastiques Reference to the masters of the past (even if irreverent) is a recurrent com- posant of modern and contemporary artistic approaches. (Postmodernism; Situationism, Appropriationism) Quotation, homage, parody, remake, pastiche, remix, détournement, recycling, mashup, appropriation, re-enactment, simulationism, found footage, sample, palimpsest - appropriations are numerous and touch all fields.

The Sources of Jan Tschichold s The New Typography Jan Tschichold s essay Die neue Typographie (The New Typography, 1928) is a game-changing book, acclaimed as the curtain raiser of modern graphic design. While it takes the form of a critical essay and an operative manual, its sources have been understudied because of their difficult identification. This project aims to reconstruct the body of sources that Tschichold drew on to understand the broader cultural context of the book, through an international conference on its impact and a travelling exhibition. The year 2018 marked the 90th anniversary of the publication of Jan Tschichold s Die neue Typographie (The New Typography). After almost a century, Tschichold s game-changing book, together with the typographic movement that stemmed from it, still attracts the interest and curiosity of graphic design historians and practitioners. The book has entered the historiographical canon and its appeal has not faded. Yet, The New Typography is a victim of its own success: it enjoys the benefits of canonisation, while suffering some side effects. Having reached an almost mythical status, The New Typography is often taken for granted and rarely questioned or closely scrutinised. This paradox is the starting point of the present research project. Jan Tschichold (Leipzig 1902 – Locarno 1974) was a German-born, Swiss-naturalised typographer, type and book designer, teacher, typography theorist and critic. In the 1920s he became one of the leaders of the New Typography movement. His conversion to the Modernist cause was mediated by the Bauhaus lesson. This was learnt first through a visit to the Bauhaus exhibition in Weimar in the summer of 1923, and encouraged in the following years through acquaintance and friendship with key exponents of the Modernist movement such as László Moholy-Nagy and El Lissitzky. With the Nazis rise to power in 1933, Tschichold escaped Germany and took refuge in Switzerland, where he spent the rest of his life with the exception of two stays in England, in 1937 and between 1947 and 1949. Published in Berlin in 1928, Tschichold s The New Typography is a manifesto. It follows an earlier statement published in October 1925 in a special issue of the trade magazine Typographische Mitteilungen, entitled “Elementare Typographie.” It was intended as a textbook for graphic designers, printers, typesetters and typographers. The term “New Typography” was first used by László Moholy-Nagy in the Bauhaus exhibition catalogue of 1923. The New Typography, also known as “elementary” or “functional” typography, is the manifestation of Modernism in graphic design and printed communication. Its rules included the privilege for sans-serif typefaces, non-centred page layouts, photography and photomontage, standardised paper sizes, and the active use of white space. After the war, Tschichold gradually distanced himself from the New Typography. He condemned the rigidity of the movement from both a political-moral and a strictly typo- graphical perspective. The research project relies on the hypothesis that, despite being broadly considered a pivotal and game-changing book that paved the way to modern graphic design, The New Typography deserves further and closer scrutiny. Building on the hypothesis that bibliographic sources are among the so-far overlooked and neglected aspects of The New Typography which are waiting to be identified, discussed and contextualised, the research project employs them as a means to open the black box in which Tschichold s book has been kept until now. Once the bibliographical references (books, magazines, grey literature) have been identified, the project investigates what they can tell us about the lineage in which The New Typography was rooted and the kind of discourses and networks it stemmed from. The focus on the sources aims to provide a more complex alternative to the worn-out rhetoric of the “pioneers” of graphic design.Main applicantECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne Matthieu Cortat Davide FornariResearch teamChiara Barbieri Martin SøbergPeriodMay 2019 – June 2021Supported byECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne HES–SO, Fonds stratégique RCDAVDisseminationWebsite die-neue-bibliographie.ch Conference Jan Tschichold s The New Typography: Its Roots and Impact on National Scenes, 26 April 2023, ECAL/École cantonale d art de Lausanne

Jean-Jacques Rousseau inspires the ECAL/HEAD Master in Cinema On the occasion of the reopening of the Maison de Rousseau et de la Littérature (MRL) in Geneva on April 21, 2021, students of the ECAL/HEAD Master s degree in Cinema are presenting a series of films as part of the Parcours Rousseau, which was designed by the Zurich architect Tristan Kobler of the Holzer Kobler office and co-written by two Rousseau specialists - Martin Rueff and Guillaume Chenevière. On the occasion of the reopening of the Maison de Rousseau et de la Littérature (MRL) in Geneva on April 21, 2021, students of the ECAL/HEAD (Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne/Haute école d art et de design Genève) Master s degree in Cinema are presenting a series of films as part of the Parcours Rousseau, which was designed by the Zurich architect Tristan Kobler of the Holzer Kobler office and co-written by two Rousseau specialists - Martin Rueff and Guillaume Chenevière. This journey perpetuates and updates the thought of the famous Swiss philosopher, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, by confronting it with the challenges of our time: education, nature and environment, secularism, citizenship, happiness. From September 2020 to January 2021, fifteen students of the ECAL/HEAD Master of Cinema - five in Directing, three in Scriptwriting, four in Sound, three in Editing - have taken up the major challenge of bringing together in a coherent way the historical and literary dimension of Jean-Jacques Rousseau with a personal and creative approach through filmic objects (documentary, fiction, montage film, archive film...). Each participant took part in the conception, direction and post-production of the films - mixing teams and roles (direction, editing, sound, script...). Eleven works are thus to be discovered within the framework of the course.

Cryptocurrency During this workshop, each student had to design a poster presenting a cryptocurrency. Each student had to visually reinterpret the characteristics of his cryptocurrency while taking into account an imposed grid in constant evolution. The posters printed with the plotter will then be overprinted.

Founded by the art dealer Rinaldo Bianda, the VideoArt Festival Locarno (1980-2001) was a pioneer platform for the presentation of the video art in Europe. Its series of colloquium and round tables organised by theorist and museum director René Berger made it a central platform for the theoretical exploration of the impact of video and, more broadly, of technology, on perception, as well as of the emergence of ‘technoculture and the reorganisation of knowledge. Concluding the research project supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation and based at ECAL, this colloquium seeks to revisit the VideoArt Festival and critically address its history and its role in championing and shaping video and new media art in Europe, through discussions and presentations with its protagonists as well as by experts in the field. Mapping Workshop - Nature morte The first year students in Graphic Design and Media & Interaction Design and Photography worked on mapping projects. The structures, which the different groups created with blocks of polystyrene, allowed them to experiment and create video, 2D and 3D content while playing with notions of space, depth and rhythm.
