Peltre s lightweight, smooth, durable and heat resistance surface as for many decades made it perfect for kitchenware, but other products applications are less common nowadays. Seeing an opportunity to challenge this industry and seek new fields of applications, second-year Bachelor Industrial Design students of ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne are proposing a fresh take on garden furniture and accessories that takes full benefits of enamelled steel qualities. Being scratch resistant, weatherproof and easy to clean, the enamelled products are keeping it up against the elements. Under the guidance of Swiss designer Francisco Torres, students conceived a range of objects from a simple watering cans, sturdy solar lanterns, playful rocking toy cows, divers plant supports, basic and compact garden tools, multipurpose low tables and resounding cowbells for the backyard menagerie. The exhibited objects where enamelled in Mexico by the skillful craftsmen of Delta Porceltech, in Polotitlán City, Mexico. Anja Karolina Furrer – Overturn/Überturm Our system is a fragile construct. The project examines the outlook on the outside world, shows traces of de- cayed architecture, and reveals fine and fragile constructions and thus our desire for an intimate space, a place in society. Metaphorically, the still lifes show the individual manipulation of artefacts. At the same time they reflect the medium itself and show direct physical confrontation with the material in a spontaneous, light-hearted way. The work is presented in a spatial installation, in order to create a photographic situation and a connection between image and material.
DESIGN MANAGEMENT FOR START-UPS The research project Design management for start-ups focused on the integration of design in innovation processes. Its objective was to promote the use of design within mainly technological start-ups and to create tools and methodologies to foster collaboration between designers and entrepreneurs. The approach took into account all design practices (industrial design, visual communication, media & interaction design, strategic design) and relied on the ecosystem of technological start-ups in the region. The study allowed for reflection at four levels: understanding the contribution of the different design disciplines in the innovation process; the analysis of the opportunities and constraints faced by entrepreneurs; the development of a set of tools for awareness raising and management of design-oriented innovation projects; supporting the strategic development of a start-up. Niki Paltenghi – CSX369 “CSX369” features research on the potential of variable fonts in the ASCII technique. A technical quality is identified – that of precise quantification between two instances – and used for colour mixing through typography. Letters are tripled in the same position and each one has a primary colour. Their interspersed variations create secondary, tertiary, etc. hues. Marvin Armand – Bibliothèque “Bibliothèque” addresses typographical signs and their use in the perfume industry. This project features an olfactory alphabet of 45 elements. Each represents a scent of the perfume company “L Eau de Cassis”. At the crossroads of illustration and typography, this alphabet takes us on a journey through the ephemeral nature of smells. Indeed, this notion of time and temporality inspired me to define a protocol to develop the nature of each sign from figuration to abstraction. “Bibliothèque” thus offers a new way of exploring signs and visual identity.

Human Rights Photography Prize to a graduate of ECAL The Act On Your Future Foundation is very pleased to announce the names of the two winners of the fifth edition of the Human Rights Photography Prize on the theme "No Planet B: Human Rights in Times of Ecological Crisis": Lowena Poole for "Stop Time By Smashing Clocks" (RCA/Royal College of Art, London) and Romain Roucoules for "Global Solutions" (ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne) The Jury thus wished to reward two artists at the beginning of their careers with different profiles and approaches. The prizewinners receive a contribution of CHF 10,000 to be shared between them in order to enable them to produce an exhibition following on from the prize-winning projects. Their work as well as the projects of the other finalists will also be included in the retrospective book that the Foundation will publish to mark the five-year anniversary of the competition. The exhibition of the winning projects and the book will be presented at the Centre de la photographie Genève (CPG) from 27 October to 15 November 2020. Global Solutions par ECAL/Romain Roucoules Following the Brazilian presidential elections, the Amazonian rainforest, an environmental icon forgotten for some twenty years, is returning to the forefront and once again crystallises the general concerns. "Thek it and Hang it" installation,02.06.2020–18.04.2021,Musée romain de Lausanne-Vidy As part of the exhibition "Le temps et moi" at the Musée romain de Lausanne-Vidy, "Thek it and Hang it" installation created at the instigation of artist Miriam Laura Leonardi. Installation created at the instigation of artist Miriam Laura Leonardi by Djellza Azemi, Ana-Francesca Balan, Tudor Ciurescu, Peilian Li, Cyane Findji, Ernest Gachet, Tennessee MacDougall, Christian Schulz and Stefan Tanase, students from the Bachelor Fine Arts at ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne. As part of the exhibition "Le temps et moi" at the Musée romain de Lausanne-Vidy, from 2 June 2020 to 18 April 2021. Inspired by the notions of time and memory, the American artist Paul Thek (born in Brooklyn, 1933 - 1988) proposed to its students to design "something to put over a child s bed". A group from ECAL took up the same topic to imagine and create this installation. The time here is upside down: a cradle has been dismantled, its bars soaked in wax, then sunk one s teeth into, before being put back together as a mobile. Common in children s rooms, especially above cribs, mobiles entertain infants and stimulate their sight. Ce film devient l œuvre phare du cinéma de la Nouvelle Vague, dont Godard est désormais l un des représentants emblématiques. Les années 1960 sont marquées par une œuvre prolixe («Le Petit Soldat», «Le Mépris», «Pierrot le fou», «La Chinoise»…).Les évènements de Mai 68 confirment un changement dans sa façon de concevoir le cinéma et ses films deviennent des étendards politiques. L advenue de la vidéo engendre la création de grandes séries essayistes, «6X2» et «France, Tour, Détour, Deux Enfants».Métamorphosés, le narratif, les acteurs professionnels, les mythes et archétypes reviennent à partir de 1979 avec «Sauve qui peut la vie», «Détective» et «Prénom Carmen», film pour lequel il reçoit le Lion d or à la Mostra de Venise en 1983. INTERFERENCES – Forty-Four Excuses for Participation and a Zero Mario de Vega with BA Fine Arts and Media & Interaction Design students A collaborative project between Bachelor Fine Arts and Bachelor Media & Interaction Design students from ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne following a workshop led by sound artist Mario de Vega, visiting professor during the fall semester 2019 at ECAL and resident at La Becque | Artists Residency. Through a conceptual approach to sound, this exhibition proposes a scenario in which the eye takes the role of the ear, and vice versa. Within the notion of “Aural Vision”, the presented works result from a short seminar that served as an introduction to a larger educative experience which aims to extend collaborations between Media & Interaction Design and Fine Arts, using sound as a bridge. The project is based on the 45 definitions of the INTERFERENCES publication. It investigates the ongoing developments of timebased media, taking advantage of its benefits and advances, through a critical perspective. ECAL at the Youth Olympic Games – Lausanne 2020,09–22.01.2020,Lausanne On the occasion of the Youth Olympic Games – Lausanne 2020 , ECAL particpates in several projects. On the occasion of the Youth Olympic Games – Lausanne 2020, ECAL particpates in several projects: --- Design of the cauldron, medal trays and podiums The cauldron, the medal trays and the podiums are three of the most symbolic elements of the Olympic Games. Second-year Industrial Design Bachelor s students from the ECAL were tasked with designing them. The students had to meet certain operational constraints and technical requirements: The cauldron must be able to be supplied with wood pellets, the result of a partnership between several organisations in the Vaud region, including the Lignum Vaud, which brings together all the regional players in the wood sector. This ecological innovation makes this cauldron the most eco-responsible in the history of the Olympic Games. It must also be removable and an integral part of the Games legacy. The podiums would have to be assembled outside at the last minute, often on uneven ground. They needed to be solid, light and large enough for several athletes. The medal trays had to be big enough to hold both medals and mascots. Cauldron Design: ECAL (Bachelor Industrial Design) Student: François Lafortune Production: C-FOR! + Ecole de la construction This cauldron project took inspiration from “freeskiing” culture, seeking to reflect it in both style and substance. Freeskiing is the world of skateparks and snowparks, with which many young people are very familiar. The installation comprises a mini jump and a ramp, with the cauldron placed at the top. The project s designer, François, envisaged that it would be an integral part of the Opening Ceremony and that the cauldron could be lit by a freerider. After Lausanne 2020, the installation is set to be converted into part of a permanent skatepark for the people of Lausanne. Podium Design: ECAL (Bachelor Industrial Design) Students: Louis Bétin + Theo Luvisotto + Estelle Rougerie Production: Ecole de la construction The podiums juxtapose the outlines of three mountain ranges where the competitions are being held: the Jura mountains, the Vaud Alps and the mountains of St Moritz. So you ll be nice and warm, and all set to go cheer on your favourite athletes!” Mapping of the BodyCity Show Unique creation imagined for Lausanne en Jeux! - the animation program of the Youth Olympic Games Lausanne 2020 - BodyCity is a show where arts and urban sports meet in an impressive open-air setting, on the place Centrale of Lausanne. Five performances will take place in public on January 9, 11, 12, 18 and 19, 2020 at 6 p.m. "Bodies in fusion with the city", it is from this strong image that Nicolas Musin directed BodyCity, a contemporary show questioning the relationship of young generations to the city. On an open-air stage representing a city in constant mutation,more than 50 performers aged between 9 and 30 years will cross their disciplines from January 9, bringing together urban arts and sports suchas skateboarding, BMX, rollerblading, scooter, parkour and dance. Imagined within the framework of Lausanne en Jeux!, this show is above all a work of youth carried by art schools and urbandisciplines training centers established in the Lausanne conurbation. BodyCity was thus able to bring together different Lausanne actors such as the students of the ECAL (conception of video images) of the HEMU (composition of the original music and recording of the soundtrack), thedancers of the Ecole-Atelier Rudra Béjart (dance and percussion), JDS Events (hip hop, breakdance) aswell as the riders of La Fièvre and the tracers of X-Trem Move. A meeting between different cultures and disciplines that the director Nicolas Musin has managed to reunite in order to offer a unique and unprecedented show in Lausanne. The mapping of the show was thus created by the students of the Visual Communication Department (BA Graphic Design, BA Photography, BA Media & Interaction Design) under the direction of Vincent Jacquier, Angelo Benedetto, Jean-Vincent Simonet and Mitch Paone while editing was managed by Amaury Hamon and Clément Lambelet.
Summer University in Tokyo On the occasion of a workshop organised in the framework of the Summer University programme organised by the State of Vaud , a group of students from the ECAL Cinema Department wrote and directed four short movies (documentary and fiction) in Tokyo, in partnership with the Laboratory of Tsuchida/Kore-eda/University of de Waseda. On the occasion of a three-week workshop organised in the framework of the Summer University programme organised by the State of Vaud, a group of students from the ECAL Cinema Department wrote and directed four short movies (documentary and fiction) in Tokyo, in partnership with the Laboratory of Tsuchida/Kore-eda/University of de Waseda. During their stay, the students took part in the masterclasses led by Hirokazu Kore-eda. They were also supervised by filmmakers and professors such as Makoto Shinozaki, Kōji Fukada and Tamaki Tsuchida, as well as the students of Waseda. The long trip ended with a screening of the films in the Institut franco-japonais in Tokyo, hosted by the Embassy of Switerland in Japan, with the presence of Jonas Pulver, Head of Culture and Information in the Embassy.

BRUTAL 003 To celebrate the Paris Photo 2019 edition, the Bachelor Photography students of ECAL, under the artistic direction of Nicolas Poillot, translated the music of the producer IKAZ BOI into images. The visuals, sometimes smooth and neat, sometimes dark and rough, were produced by listening to the new project BRUTAL 3: an intimate album oscillating between romance and darkness composed with instrumental tracks only. Exclusively, 500 unpublished and numbered vinyl copies were created especially for this occasion. For two days, ECAL invests the Au Roi gallery, inviting spectators to a sound and visual journey, in an ephemeral sensory space generated by a synchronous video installation. Paper Park Marie Douel and Emile Barret from Hors Pistes led a workshop with the 2nd year bachelor in industrial design. They asked the students to create a maze made entirely from the paper waste of the ECAL printing centre. Based on the principle of the exquisite corpse, each group created one part of the labyrinth with a strong aesthetic and structural approach, allowing the visitor to get lost in distinct universes.

Usefulless In his essay, Theory of Metamorphosis , philosopher Emanuele Coccia celebrates the “power of caterpillars” allowing them to transition from one existence to another without having to die first nor being born again. The caterpillar thus in its full autonomy shakes up the natural order of things. This in-between state materializes in the cocoon, an intermediate yet complete stage, totalizing more than the sum of two halves. The cocoon is a circumscribed territory which has no limits, not completely life, not totally death. This solipsistic space is plural, it is host to the liquid form, embracing simultaneity and different realities. The artworks presented here echo the principle of transition which govern this exhibition. Through their relationship to space or how they question the function of an art object, through the staging of intimacy, these works identify a limit and almost mechanically, ask what lies beyond. Usefulless is a quality specific to useful objects that are nowhere to be found when needed. Opening a middle way through the binary definition useful/useless , the term usefulless defines a transitional state of utility. Mêlant avec virtuosité histoire de l art et références populaires, street culture et questionnements métaphysiques, il dresse une allégorie saisissante de la culture du XXIe siècle. Il a notamment travaillé pour les magazines les plus prestigieux et réalisé des publicités pour des marques de renom ainsi que de nombreux vidéoclips pour des stars de la musique telles que Jennifer Lopez, Britney Spears, Robbie Williams ou encore Amy Winehouse. Exposé partout dans le monde et sélectionné par le magazine American Photo comme l une des dix personnalités les plus importantes de la photographie, David LaChapelle vit à Hawaï dans une ferme écologique et se consacre depuis 2006 uniquement à sa pratique artistique, reversant une partie de ses gains à la Fondation Sebastião Salgado, qui lutte contre la déforestation en Amazonie. Talk given by Camille Henrot Camille Henrot, Plasticienne, New York www.camillehenrot.fr Née en 1978, Camille Henrot vit et travaille à New York. L artiste française développe une pratique variée qui mêle film, dessin, sculpture et installation. En puisant ses inspirations et ses sujets dans la vie quotidienne et dans la littérature, la mythologie, le cinéma et l anthropologie, l oeuvre de Camille Henrot reconsidère avec acuité les typologies d objets et les systèmes de pensées établis. En 2013, dans le cadre de la Smithsonian résidence à Washington DC, elle réalise le film Grosse Fatigue , avec lequel elle remporte le Lion d argent à la Biennale de Venise. Lauréate du Prix Nam June Paik 2014 et du Edvard Munch Art Award 2015, Camille Henrot a également participé aux Biennales de Lyon, Berlin et Sydney et a bénéficié d expositions personnelles dans des lieux prestigieux tels que le Schinkel Pavillon à Berlin, la Kunsthalle de Vienne, le New Museum à New York ou encore au Palais de Tokyo à Paris pour une carte blanche en 2017. Ses prochaines expositions majeures auront lieu à Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery (2019) et à la National Gallery of Victoria de Melbourne (2020). D HEYGERE As part of a course led by Philippe Jarrigeon, 2nd-year Bachelor of Photography students at ECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne were asked to work in the world of D heygere jewelry and accessories. Between luxury and the ordinary, reality and representation, the students proposed new ways of interpreting the provocative, minimalist pieces.

Résolu à vous en mettre plein les yeux, Numerik Games Festival aspire à valoriser le digital à travers les différents champs qu il peut couvrir: musical, culturel, artistique, patrimonial, économique et académique. L ECAL vous propose d être au cœur de l expérience, qu elle soit immersive, interactive ou ludique! L ECAL propose une sélection de projets du Bachelor Media & Interaction Design réalisés lors de la dernière année académique. Allant des travaux de première année jusqu aux travaux de diplôme, ces projets couvrent une diversité de supports mêlant visuels, sons et interactions, afin de placer le spectateur au coeur d expériences toujours plus oniriques. Plusieurs projets de réalité virtuelle explorent le thème du clip vidéo en offrant une expérience immersive, où sons et images se mélangent, se combinent, se coordonnent pour offrir des points de vue inédits et uniques. Une sélection de jeux vidéo propose des nouvelles manières d interagir avec la technologie. En explorant la simplicité à travers des mini-jeux ludiques ou en explorant la complexité à travers un projet de puzzle game plus conséquent, ces créations offrent des nouvelles perspectives quant à la forme et le fond du 10e art.
