Carhartt WIP × ECAL

Carhartt WIP × ECAL Earlier this year, Carhartt WIP (for Work in Progress) teamed up with ECAL, inviting Bachelor Photography students to interpret in their own way some of the emblematic pieces of the American clothing brand, which develops its own collections from the original Carhartt work clothes. The students, led by art director Nicolas Poillot, produced an editorial report, which was included in the latest issue of "WIP Magazine" published by Carhartt WIP and some of whose images will be exhibited at the ECAL on the occasion of the launch of this book.

Boot.leg ECAL/ Boot.leg moves away from music streaming services and focuses more on sharing and creating custom playlists. RAM ECAL/ RAM is an application that hijacks Instagram in order to limit the flow of images we consume. The feed is replaced by textual content describing the images it hides in order to offer the user neutral and rational content, further stimulating the mind and spirit. “Random Access Memory” also makes it possible to limit data consumption in order to awaken consciousness by playing between the anthropomorphisation of digital and human memory. Musique Publique ECAL/ Musique Publique proposes a new place of listening and musical discovery on the internet where the experience is directly inspired by the feelings of a record store. Wordproof ECAL/ Wordproof is a social network that allows you to connect with people by discussing their interests. Carte Antique Project
Carte Antique

Sean Kuhnke – Carte Antique “Carte Antique” is a dysfunctional font family based on the eccentric lettering on French school maps produced in Paris between 1880 and 1970. The earliest maps of this period featured toponyms that were engraved in reverse directly onto zinc plates. The workflow eventually changed, with the text later being lettered in ink and then used to expose specifically primed zinc plates. Regardless of the exact process, these maps share a similar root in the topographic models of the Baton typeface. The new family is applied to a mapping of Lausanne, from the perspective of skateboarders. seankuhnke@gmail.com http://www.seankuhnke.com

Jelena Luise – tip-toeing on blades of glory It is inevitable that after a shared crisis, time will be described as having a before and after. Seeing everything burned to the ground may be disturbing at first but profound transformations are at work. This provides an opportunity to build something new - but what? Expanding on a moment of overwhelming climax, the scope of our imagination is put to the test. The old world is dying and the new world is struggling to be born. Now is the time of monsters.

An attempt of purification which passes the limites of time, language and space in order to transform a profound wound into something sublime. Student s statement In order to ensure a sound that was both artistically and technically appropriate for my classmates graduation films, I worked closely with all departments involved in the production process, scouting locations, attending rehearsals, and choosing the right equipment. I also helped develop the narrative aspects of one of these projects by adding or taking away layers of music, moods and effects to the sound editing, and then refining this complex soundscape in the mix until it fitted imperceptibly into a larger context.

There, during the preparation of the most important religious festival of the city : the Ecce homo; father and son go to share in solitude, their hatreds for each other. santichacon91@gmail.com Fiction / 14min Synopsis José visits the main church in the city of Popayán, Colombia. The faithful prepare the most important celebration of the Catholic tradition of this place: the procession of the Ecce homo. After his visit, José returns home to his father, Juan Antonio who is back after a long absence. Life brings them together again, but something burns in him. Juan Antonio, a man of brute strength, no longer has the physical strength that accompanied him throughout his life. He and José, who grew up under his strong and conservative authority, will confront each other and let themselves be led by love and hate. During this meeting, José will allow himself for the first time to participate in the procession of the Ecce homo, which his father always forbade him to go to because the celebration is only for men and for Juan Antonio he is not a real man. Student s Commentaire Ecce Homo has gone through me deeply. From its conception, the project questioned me about my life, my ancestors and the city where I come from. It also questioned me about the way I relate to my family, to those around me; it made me understand with love their thoughts, but it also confronted them, opposed them and finally healed them. I want to make films to understand myself and the things around me and, from this understanding, make films as a way of healing, a remedy.

Traces

Leila Farra – Traces “Traces” is a collection of paintbrushes made out of rattan and horsehair. The idea behind this research was to experiment with the tools. Movement, the design of the handle and the hair position influenced the result. The first tests on paper led to experiments on fabric, resulting in a series of painted textiles whose patterns stem directly from the brushstrokes. This project enabled me to immerse myself into two ancestral crafts, wickerwork and paintbrush manufacturing, which I was then able to merge to create a collection between art and design.

Thus, I created “Chef!”, a line of kitchen knives that combines the intelligence of craftsmanship with the precision of the industry. The steel blade, protected by a natural anti-corrosive treatment called “seasoning”, is attached to the handle thanks to assembly that is directly inspired by hammers.

Once the lights are on, Lucien and Anton are faced with their differences but are drawn even closer together. Fiction / 18 min Synopsis West Lausanne – 2020. A Grindr encounter sees two men meet in an apartment, leading to unusual nocturnal reflections on youth and love. Comment I designed the film s tones in relation to a cinematic period that is dear to me, in line with Christopher Doyle and Jean-Yves Escoffier. The film is dark and somewhat expressionist. Nowadays, if you use digitally assisted workflows, cinema photography can quickly become bland, which is why I was not afraid to play with the limits of the camera. Thibault Villard

The main experience of this film editing was to find, in the narrowness of a collaboration interrupted by coronavirus hazards, the strength of a shared desire to give the film the space and time it required. Fanny Reynaud – Nebraska (photography) The movie tells two stories that temporalities each other ultimately :  the encounter between a Swiss farmer and a Portuguese traveler, and a cow s pregnancy. Fiction / 20 min Synopsis Lost in the mountains, surrounded by his cows, André works hard on the farm. His daily life suddenly takes a new turn when he meets Rafaele, a passing man who speaks Portuguese. Not sharing the same language, the two men try to communicate by means other than speech. The illness of one of the cows, Nebraska, and the impending birth of her calf, unites them by a common sensitivity. Comment My major is Filming at ECAL s Film Studies Department and my graduation project therefore consisted of being director of photography for a film made by one of my fellow students, Lou-Théa Papaloïzos, and monitoring its production from the early days of preparing the film all the way to grading. The film in question tells the story of André, a farmer who raises Swiss cows, and Rafaele, a young Portuguese man crossing Switzerland to join his brother in Germany. The film subtly exposes the attraction that the two men feel for each other, bathed in the gentleness of the animal world. Fanny Reynaud

Fiction / 24 min / Mention Very good Synopsis After their house burns down, 18-year-old Sofia and her mother Carla have to live together in a small room at « The Little Swallow Hotel ». Sofia explores the building and meets new inspiring people. A thousand opportunities seem to open up for her. Carla, on the other hand, has to get used to the idea of her daughter leaving. In this closed-door environment, mother and daughter try to find a new balance in their relationship. Comment A mother and her daughter in a hotel room, a few meters from what was their house... gone up in smoke, taking their common past with them. The film, like a parenthesis in this place of transit that is "La Rondinella", where strangers meet and make memories, spaces of intimacy, a place where Sofia and her mother seek to rebuild, with the fragility and awkwardness that characterize the love that binds a daughter to her mother. Nikita invests the enclosed space by the character, Sofia, formidably interpreted by Elena Stoll, who bewitches us by her presence, her face at the same time babyish and feminine, and with whom Nikita continues his collaboration. Sofia draws us into her boredom, her expectations, her encounters, her solitary wanderings, but above all into her impulse for life and renewal. For Rondinella is also the portrait of this youth, full of dreams and obstacles. Nikita Merlini directs a sensitive, delicate, hypnotic film that seizes time. This vulnerable time. The time of childhood. The time of emancipation. The time of suffocating, yet unfailing love. Elsa Amiel / Director

Strangers Project
Strangers

Nora Longatti – Strangers A young woman challenges the daily grind with an unusual habit: getting in touch with strangers. Fiction / 20 mn Synopsis A young woman collapses in the midst of an anonymous city. Strangers go by or bend over her. Strangers is a silent research on resonance in a world of passerbys. Comment An almost silent wide shot opens the film on a gray building, the entrance to number 36, framed by two balconies with sloping umbrellas. At the bottom of the building a form lies, we discover that it is a young woman... when she gets up. The narration repeats itself, slowly, the sets change at the rhythm of the falls, the camera is of a voluntary stability, it films like the witness of an external glance; the carefully chosen settings are graphic, of a beautiful sobriety, playing on a range of cold colors nuanced with some warm notes, the light is natural, everything is clean and simple. This young woman falls - syncope fainting loss of consciousness abandonment? We don t know. She fades away from time for the space of a glance, she melts on the material until she finds herself on the ground, whether it is outside or inside, she collapses gently either with her head resting on a shoulder, or wrapped in arms, or brooded, or embraced, by human beings who, while being delicate, will watch over her until she wakes up, always silent and motionless, they will respect her temporality until she returns to movement. She finds the movement again, falls again, the narration repeats itself, her collapses punctuate the film like the refrain of a sweet lullaby. Hush! Let her fall. Stéphane Lévy, DOP

Coline Confort – Imperial (direction) At dawn, a cannon shatters the silence. The horses gallop across the beaten ground. Eva, 21, wants to join the Imperial HorseGuards, a historical reenactment of a Napoleonic regiment reserved for men. Documentary / 22 min Synopsis At dawn, a cannon shatters the silence. The horses gallop across the beaten ground. Eva, 21, wants to join the Imperial HorseGuards, a historical reenactment of a Napoleonic regiment reserved for men. In search of romance, she conceals her identity so that she can set her foot in the stirrup //(climb into the saddle), defying a 200-year-old ban. In this world of powder and smoke, Eva finally finds herself as she had always dreamed: ‘a handsome soldier beside a beautiful princess. Comment There are films that take a long time to be found, others that are born of an obviousness. One cannot say which is preferable. One cannot tell by looking at a film if its trajectory was eventful or peaceful. What counts is its impact on the present and the trace it leaves. Imperial has known versions of the script very different from the finished film. But these variants have nourished Coline s reflection, and this documentary carries within it all the others that were not made. Like layers. As if it had taken all these detours to finally manage to tell us a simple story, one of those that always thrill us, a story of desire and love. We can notice the great maturity in the management of the duration of the shots, the beauty of the frames and the attention given to the light. The almost feverish look at her character, while at the same time a great determination in the way she accompanies her. Eva s trajectory is simple and fluid in its accomplishment, and this simplicity (so difficult to achieve) is movingly beautiful. As can be the look of Eva on a young girl who is enough to put "a little glitter in her life". Laurent Larivière / Director

"USM Design Grant x ECAL" exhibition,05–14.11.2020,Design Days, Flon, Lausanne For the 4th edition of the USM Design Grant awarded by the USM Foundation, ECAL s Bachelor Industrial Design students, under the direction of Swiss designer Adrien Rovero, were asked to design listening stations that materialise the sound they emit, generating a distinctive multi-sensory experience in the context of a public exhibition. On the occasion of the Design Days, the winners of the grant, Martin Stricker and Theo Luvisotto, present "Infinity", a visual and sound installation that invites the user to enter an infinite space. Visitors can look through an opening and feel the echo of their own voice, while seeing themselves in an infinite reflection. The openings are positioned at different heights, allowing children and adults to interact freely within the structure. The "Bambino" project by Bérengère Bussioz and Clémence Buytaert will also be on display. Thanks to two loudspeakers integrated in the backrest, this chatty bench, installed in outdoor or indoor cultural spaces, whispers sounds or information to visitors. www.designdays.ch www.fondationusm.org

Collaboration with SAMSUNG Project
Collaboration with SAMSUNG

Collaboration with SAMSUNG Research project for the Mobile phones department at Samsung, South Korea. Collaboration led par Xavier Perrenoud, under the supervision of Erwan Bouroullec, and realized by MAS in Design for Luxury & Craftsmanship students. The result was a catalogue of ideas and inspirations for the brand s teams. Galaxy Mirror Carson Hong Escaping from the [magical] digital world where everything is controlled by the user s voice – the idea for the project first came from observing the way people interact with others and objects. Galaxy Mirror is a communication accessory connecting family members through a human-friendly medium, stemming from research on universal human means of communication. Inspired by universal experiences and powered by today s technology, Galaxy Mirror is at the nexus of human communications and the home environment. Smart Stand Charles Gastaud This lamp consists of two main elements: the base, which can be used as a [Ed1] , and an articulated lampshade, in which a projector is hidden. When the projector is oriented directly towards its base, the device can simply be used as a connected lamp. The colour of the light can be changed or dimmed, but it also has additional functionality as an alarm clock display and to read messages, emails or notifications, among others. The lampshade can also be rotated in different ways in order to project onto a wall or the ceiling and allows a broader use similar to that of a standard projector, such as viewing videos, photos, presentations, etc. Haptic Tactility Charlotte Therre This work is a research project on how installing haptic sensors together with textures under a soft surface (upholstered fabric for example) could functionally activate a digital response upon being touched, scrolled up/down, tapped, etc. It is a broad concept that shows how haptic texture hidden under a soft surface could enhance the user´s experience and interactivity with an interface or appliance without using a (visible) remote control or a keyboard. With an instinctive gesture, one can manipulate software, dimming, levels, a screen, etc. Aiming to empower the user and their senses in terms of a space or a specific action, the haptic texture itself is imperceptible unless a light pressure is applied, allowing a fully discreet, minimal and integrated flat surface on an object or within an environment. Envelope Chia-Ling Chang Soft charging for devices through a tender gesture — putting it into a see-through envelope — which allows you to take your devices anywhere and access them even when they are charging inside. The induction components are arranged in and covered by transparent materials such as Tyvek, Japanese paper and various types of TPU. This project thus explores new uses relating to our devices while arousing more haptic senses. The choice of materials also addresses sustainability concerns. When the devices are activated, the UI and motion graphics interact withthe envelope s translucent properties, creating a surprising experience and opening up the possibility for our devices to be more than just screens. Reconciling Duality Daejoong Kim The design of mobile phones is becoming increasingly smooth and simple. UX design appears to be the priority in design nowadays, and it is a direction that I do not like. This project, imagined for Korean brand Samsung, aims to take a stand against this trend towards smoothness. We all like to make physical contact with the texture of objects we use daily. With this project, the goal is to develop a new, simplified vision of mobile phones that would interact with a new UI design. The cover has patterns and textures that aim to foster touch, feel, and minimalism. Units Ebony Lerandy & Pierre-Antoine Berthy Units is a research project on different ways to experience Samsung earbuds. Through several earbud box proposals, it aims to create new user interactions and wearable options, with particular attention to materials and colours. Exploring shapes and playfulness, this project presents alternatives to the current way of wearing earbuds. Mechanical Emotion Fernando Rivero We all communicate with our devices all the time. But they are usually static. People communicate with each other in much more complex ways. Non-verbal communication is part of our everyday lives, and certain gestures can provide a lot of information and feedback. How about giving our devices the ability to look at us when we want them to? To turn up when we get a notification? To answer us with gestures? To allow us to use them remotely without touching them? What if we turn our devices into robots? This exercise involved making an animated base for mobile devices to connect to, along with the accompanying interface. These two elements work together to generate different movements and gestures that allow us to complement the communication experience with our mobile devices. Watch Cases Luca Gruber & Paula Chacartegui This project aims to propose new possibilities regarding how to integrate wearable technologies in our everyday lifestyle through natural interactions and better personalization options. The scenarios studied encompass fashion-oriented and active lifestyles, leading to a total of three devices: Loop, Necklace and Clip. All concepts enhance the possibilities of different CMF combinations and device-wearing options. Animated modifiable graphics complete the individual aesthetic of each piece.

Overturn/Überturm Project
Overturn/Überturm

Anja Karolina Furrer – Overturn/Überturm Our system is a fragile construct. The project examines the outlook on the outside world, shows traces of de- cayed architecture, and reveals fine and fragile constructions and thus our desire for an intimate space, a place in society. Metaphorically, the still lifes show the individual manipulation of artefacts. At the same time they reflect the medium itself and show direct physical confrontation with the material in a spontaneous, light-hearted way. The work is presented in a spatial installation, in order to create a photographic situation and a connection between image and material.

Passerines Project
Passerines

Aurore Péry – Passerines “Passerines” is a short animated film that addresses the notion of cycle in the environment, through the theme of bird migration and its deterioration in relation to various aspects of human activity. Inspired by educational films and wildlife documentaries, this project aims to raise awareness of our impact on our environment through a loop that our actions influence and which deteriorates with time. Between contemplative scenes and explanations, this short film is an invitation to question our relationship to our environment. Prix BG Ingénieurs Conseils

ECAL at Sculpture Garden, Geneva – Le cours de l'eau Event
ECAL at Sculpture Garden, Geneva – Le cours de l'eau

ECAL at Sculpture Garden, Geneva – Le cours de l eau,18.06–30.09.2020,Parc des Eaux-Vives, Geneva On the occasion of the Geneva Biennial: Sculpture Garden organized by artgenève and the MAMCO (curator of the exhibition: Balthazar Lovay) until 30 September 2020, students in 2nd year Bachelor Industrial Design from ECAL present a Bisse project in the Parc des Eaux-Vives. No doubt you have already walked, or dreamt of walking, along a Bisse in Canton Valais. A Bisse is a historical irrigation channel, many of which run through the idyllic Alpine landscape. Perhaps it was this romantic notion that inspired the National Exhibition of 1896 to recreate and display a “Mazot”, a typical wooden Alpine hut, albeit conveying a rather stereotypical idea of Switzerland. This larch wood hut, which could be considered as a forerunner of the circular economy, has been given a new lease of life for passersby to admire in the Eaux-Vives park. Is it a decorative object? Is it nostalgic? Or maybe folklore? The 2nd year Bachelor Indus-trial Design students at ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne, under the supervision of programme director Stéphane Halmaï-Voisard and their professor Adrien Rovero, have chosen to recreate the architecture of a traditional Bisse. This construction is also made of larch wood and includes several surprising features, starting with a viewing platform, a map of Lake Geneva, a water mirror and a simple bench to sit and contemplate a basic element: the flow of water. This project brings us closer to nature and makes sense in today s world where traditional values and local sourcing are being revived.
