ECAL – Ten Years in Renens,06.12.2017–16.02.2018,Gallery l elac To celebrate the 10th year anniversary of its arrival in its new building in Renens, ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne presents an exhibition of the best projects created during this period by students from all fields of studies. Under the impulse of Pierre Keller (director from 1995 to 2011), ECAL took up residence in Renens in 2007 in the former premises of the IRIL factory, a building renovated by the Franco-Swiss architect Bernard Tschumi and the Fehlmann office in Morges. Ten years later, ECAL presents an exhibition of the best projects created during this period, emblematic of the various disciplines taught between its walls (Art Direction, Fine Arts, Cinema, Industrial and Product Design, Design for Luxury & Craftsmanship, Graphic Design, Media & Interaction Design, Photography, Type Design). Alexis Georgacopoulos, Director of ECAL, and Heads of all Departments have selected nearly 300 projects from the harvest of a rich decade (1456 diplomas, 310 exhibitions, 655 awards, 100 collaborations), staged in a structure shaped as an X, imagined by Adrien Rovero and Béatrice Durandard, both graduates of the Bachelor Industrial Design. This is the perfect opportunity to see works that have contributed to the reputation of ECAL and perpetuated its international renown (5th Dezeen Hot List published late 2016, ranking the best schools of art and architecture in the world). The exhibition offers the opportunity to (re)discover among others: "Delirious Home", featuring a series of objects in a playful interpretation of the "smart home" concept (Award for the best show at the Milan Furniture Fair 2014). A wide selection of films including, award-winning films of the Locarno Film Festival. Many photos, posters and editions that went around the world as part of the exhibitions "ECAL Photography" and "ECAL Graphic Design". Paintings, videos, installations, drawings, attesting of the broad spectrum embraced by fine arts. Pool CH — ECAL at Arsenic,31.10–02.11.2017,Arsenic , Lausanne Pool CH — ECAL at Arsenic — Centre d art scénique contemporain Tuesday 31 October Wednesday 1 November Thursday 2 November The Pool CH organised by ECAL offers two distinct workshops, one lead by Cecilia Bengolea, the other by Karl Holmqvist. Each attending student registers for one workshop only. Both Cecilia Bengolea and Karl Holmqvist find themselves in shifting positions, moving alongside the art scene, towards the space of the stage, between writing practices, language, poetry, visual forms, film, and sound. The workshops will take place outside of the art school, in a location suited to host both practices, at the Arsenic – Centre d art scénique contemporain, the theatre located in the city centre of Lausanne. --- Cecilia Bengolea Workshop statement I would like to share a practice of dance and writing. The ancestors of Bolivia, the Argentine cumbia street dances and Jamaican dancehall as well as automatic writing. The work on breathing, on hyperventilation as practiced in these dances interest me particularly in order to then write and think about other rhythms and speeds. Biography Born in Buenos Aires, Cecilia Bengolea was trained in urban dances and studied anthropological dance with Eugenio Barba before graduating in philosophy and art history from the University of Buenos Aires. In 2001, she moved to Paris and attended the Ex.e.r.c.e. course in Montpeller, directed by Mathilde Monnier. In 2011, Cecilia Bengolea co-directed two short films which were in dialogue with Levi-Strauss s work : Tristes Tropiques : La Beauté (tôt) vouée à se défaire with Donatien Veisman and Cri de Pilaga with Juliette Bineau. Cecilia Bengolea performs dance like animated sculpture, with the possibility of becoming object and subject in the same instance. She regularly collaborates with artists such as Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster, Monika Gintersdorfer and Knut Klassen, as well as with dancehall specialists Damion BG Dancerz et Joan Mendy. In collaboration with the British artist Jeremy Deller, Cecilia Bengolea has also co-directed the films RythmAssPoetry and Bombom s Dream. Dates and hours Tuesday 31 October 2pm – 6pm Wednesday 1 November 2pm – 6pm Thursday 2 November 2pm – 6pm Location Arsenic – Centre d art scénique contemporain Rue de Genève 57, 1004 Lausanne --- Karl Holmqvist Workshop statement The term “Deep Listening” was coined by composer Pauline Oliveros in the 1980s and has mostly been used in relation to contemporary experimental music. I wanted to invoke it however with the sense that there s something beneath the surface, behind the noise or what artist James Benning has stated as artists being people “who are able to look at the world around them”, the notion that art making is in fact part of processing this act of looking or “listening”. Part of “deepening” it. Proposing a workshop at ecal about the use of language in art, as spoken word or graphic design. As meaning carrier or a type of flashing picture largely part of today s urban landscape. Also about memory function, “brain washing” techniques and repetition. How things can stay perfectly clear in one s memory and yet also change over time or even right there in the moment. Biography Karl Holmqvist is an artist living and working in Berlin. The main focus of his artistic practice is on language and includes writing in the form of artist s books, in video animations and room size installations as well as in spoken word performances. His writing is mostly made up of quotations from a variety of sources rearranged in the form of a type of written collage that deals with repetition, double meaning and memory function. Recent one-person exhibitions include Centre d Art Contemporain, Geneva, Indipendenza, Rome (with Klara Liden), Kunstverein Braunschweig (with Klara Liden), Power Station, Dallas and Camden Arts Centre, London. He has participated in the Venice Biennial in 2003 and 2011, and Performa, New York in 2005, 2007 and 2013. Dates and hours Tuesday 31 October 10am – 1pm, Wednesday 1 November 10am – 1pm Thursday 2 November 10am – 1pm Location Arsenic – Centre d art scénique contemporain Rue de Genève 57, 1004 Lausanne Registration conditions Students choose one workshop. Each workshop can host up to 20 students. Students cannot attend both workshops. Registration by mentioning the workshop you are interested in at dimitri.depreux@ecal.ch

Pietro Alberti – Beyond Fields Beyond Fields is a plateform independent puzzle game composed of three chapters each inspired by the fundamental interactions of nature. Throughout the game the player pass through different levels during which he has the opportunity to interact with various graphical elements that will allow him to rebalance the force fields and to solve the level. Thanks to a system of filters, it is possible to travel through different representations of the game - graphical, analytical or mathematical - thus allowing the player to have a global vision of the forces that are exerted between the graphical elements. GLASSWORKS x ECAL at TRESOR Contemporary Craft,21–24.09.2017,Messe Basel Matteo Gonet (Glassworks) and ECAL have teamed in order to design and produce a glass chandelier. The project was directed by London-based designer Bethan Laura Wood and involved the students of the Master of Advanced Studies in Design for Luxury and Craftsmanship of ECAL. At the end of a workshop, "Goethe", the project created by a group of four students (Savvas Laz, Maximilian Maertens, Mauro Martinho, Enrico Pietra), was selected and produced into a working prototype by the Münchenstein-based glassblower. From the colorful universe of sweets, these students focused on the creation of a wide variety of pieces to illustrate the different techniques that only glassblowers can master. The tubular forms interlockwith a metal structure to create a unique installation, such as a contemporary chandelier, resulting in a perfect celebration of student s creativity and craftsmanship. The Sausage of the Future Can we count on the sausage to provide a solution, in order to reduce the consumption of meat? And can the use of new ingredients increase the diversity of our diets? Can the sausage make a considerable contribution to a sustainable food culture? To answer these questions, a chef of molecular gastronomy, a master butcher and a designer have teamed up to look into sausage production techniques and potential new ingredients – such as insects, nuts, and legumes – to reinvent the sausage of the future. The final publication Sausage of the Future takes the reader on a journey through all the building blocks of a sausage. It stops along the way to explore issues like moistness, flavoring, glue, and preservation. The publication catalogues different types of sausages and presents lesser-known ingredients, carefully selected for their potential regarding the future. In our days, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), we are facing a serious shortage of protein-rich-food. The reason is the overconsumption of animal products. Meat, in particular, will be scarce: thus, we need alternatives. The sausage is one of mankind s first-ever designed food items. A paragon of efficient butchery, it was originally designed to make the most of animal protein in times of scarcity. With its wide variety of sizes and its endless choice of possible fillings, the sausage offers itself again to take a pioneering role. This time, not only to make the most of animal protein, but to be a shell for all kinds of nutrition.Main applicantsECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne (project leader)Research teamSupervision Mock-ups Gabriel Serero Herman ter Weele Graphic design and illustrations Helge Hjorth Bentsen Olli Hirvonen Photography Emile Barret Noortje Knulst Jonas MarguetPeriodmarch 2014 – november 2017Supported byECAL/University of Art and Design LausanneDisseminationPublication Carolien Niebling, The Sausage of the Future, Zurich: Lars Müller Publishers, 2017. Senta Simond – Rayon Vert “The Rayon Vert” project takes its title from the optical phenomenon and the 1986 Eric Rohmer film, both of which are reflected in the project approach to portraiture. The work can be seen as a continuation of the tradition focussing on the relationship between artist and model. The images feature a circle of acquaintances and respond to the existing, and too often clichéd, representation of femininity. The images are based on fact and are devoid of narrative and of a patriarchal vision of beauty. The project is presented as both a series of exhibited prints and a book. “The Rayon Vert” project takes its title from the optical phenomenon and the 1986 Eric Rohmer film, both of which are reflected in the project approach to portraiture. Laura Zoccarato – Spectacle Total “Spectacle Total” is a term derived from the concept of “Gesamtkunstwerk”: a total work of art, in which all elements (music, voice, movement and show) work together. The choreographer Maurice Béjart staged a ballet as a “spectacle total”, by getting his inspiration from different sources, mixing different styles, experimental music, African dances and theatre. I used his idea of mixing different methods to create new visuals by manipulating the images of his archive, both analogically and digitally. The result is an experimental narrative that combines his most famous performances into one book. “Spectacle Total” is a term derived from the concept of “Gesamtkunstwerk”: a total work of art, in which all elements (music, voice, movement and show) work together. Imanol Pittaluga – Enbata A young man, Iago, wakes up in a hospital waiting room and finds out that he now has to look after his 3yr old brother who he s never met. Fiction / 30 min Synopsis A young man, Iago, wakes up in a hospital waiting room and finds out that he now has to look after his 3yr old brother who he s never met. For a few hours, he s responsible for a life that s just beginning. In the middle of natural scenery, yet confronted by the real world, buffeted by gusts of wind and surrounded by abandoned ships and skeleton-like cranes, Iago realizes that life can come to an end. Comment The great success of the film is that it never loses sight of its narrative stakes, a young adult and a child who learn to discover each other, while slipping quietly into a more experimental region, which Imanol Pittaluga populates with dreamlike visions that are always inspired. This shift, through the play of time and the use of scenery, produces a troubling connection between these two characters even though they are long separated. This game of persistence of figures, as well as these two fascinating actors to watch simply walking, waiting for each other, turning around or getting lost, make all the strength of Embata. Having played online, Jérémie and Marion, two geeky and solitary young adults, will obtain a blind-date. "Workbays Village" exhibition in collaboration with Vitra,29.06–24.09.2017,Port des créateurs, Toulon Following a workshop led by Camille Blin and Erwan Bouroullec, Master Product Design students of ECAL present projects around the Workbays created by Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec and edited by Vitra. Together with new functionalities, these prospective work environments are presented on the occasion of Design Parade Toulon – festival international d architecture d intérieur. DOWNLOAD IMAGES HD DOWNLOAD POSTER With Workbays, which they created for Vitra a few years ago, the French designers Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec, who regularly collaborate with ECAL, have developed a micro-architectural system that redefines the working environment and breaks with the typical rigid planning structure of offices. The units come equipped with everything users need: work surfaces, seating, optional storage and power connections. The structure of Workbays consists of slim aluminium profiles and organically shaped wall elements made of pressed polyester felt. “The ECAL students suggested we devised new typologies for these working environments, adding novel features and supplying them with new accessories”, says Camille Blin, the designer and professor who headed the project. So the Master Product Design students worked for a full semester under the watchful eye of Erwan Bouroullec and invented new structures that call to mind Japanese 0capsule hotels, a prototyping workshop, a gym, a bar, a garden or a resting area. For each of these spaces, the students created specific and original objects, ranging from Bluetooth loudspeakers to miniature lamps reminiscent of stadium ones, desk pads-cum-bags, a semi-standing stool, a cable-covering carpet, in & out wastepaper baskets, multi socket trays or a desk partition with vases and drawing pins. A 3D animation film specifically created by TRAUM Inc. presenting these unusual Workbays can also be seen at the exhibition. The visual and conceptual structure of the book is designed analogically with the central principle of quantum physics which represents the law of fate. Each model contains a unique sequence of images, layouts and illustrations due to the algorithm scripting, hence every book is non-identical. Jacopo Aztori – Röma Röma synthesises and reinterprets the original Elzevir model, whose attraction is its elegant posture and its high-readability qualities. While its style has been historically and pragmatically exploited, Röma s generous rhythm and sophisticated details stand for higher quality print, shared across the four weights and matching italics. Ho to craft across the weights the muscularity of this living yet sober book typeface? The resulting sharp reading texture promotes the ergonomics of reading while adding value to the content. Valentin Kaiser – Permanent Culture: A Manual for Sustainable Living Permanent Culture is a guide about Permaculture, which is a systemic and global method of conceiving agricultural systems and housing environments, but also any other systems, inspired by natural ecology, biomimicry and tradition. The challenge of the publication was to promote this new method of economical, social and cultural organisation. Through the book, Graphic Design and Permaculture meet, creating links on hierarchy, organisation and optimisation of space. Clément Gicquel – Finders Keepers Leaders Finders Keepers Leaders is about a contemporary controversy over the privatization of space resources, based on the opposition of two major legal texts. While one is at the origin of the complete pacification of space, for precisely 50 years, the other suggest a free appropriation of space resources by private company, initiating a global rush to the space resources. Decided unilaterally under the guidance of progress, this document raises political, ecological and geopolitical issues threatening a fragile global balance. Amaury Hamon – Grandmaster Mind Fascinated by the age of externalization of memory we live in, I inquired about its antagonist: the Art of Memory. Grandmaster Mind is an initiatory journey through mnemonic techniques. From beginner to Grandmaster, the book travels through the re-encoding of mundane datas (lists, numbers…) into memorable visual narratives. The design is built on the duality between data and its mental projection. The digital aesthetic acts as a personal database of pre-existing memories and knowledge—a key to visualize to-be-remembered informations.

Marvin Leuvrey – Overflow « Overflow evokes the excesses of hypercapitalism and its self-destructive tendencies in the abyss of technology and artifacts. This work is defined through these cities and their places of transit, such as free zones. My images are an interpretation of this acceleration of society through permanent progress and of the gradual delegation of power to machines. The book and the installation are a metaphor for the ubiquity of media devices, for the virtualization of reality through an alienating process. Humankind is evolving in a subjective kind of reality that resembles simulation. »

Jeanne Favre – Laurent is away Through pieces of memories, the book is attempting to bring a departed uncle back to life, mixing archives and contemporary pictures. Laurent appears as a fictitious figure, a kind of ghostly spirit, who ensures that the secrets surrounding his existence are brought to light. This identity quest plunged me into an intensely spiritual and emotional experience, allowing me to restore and understand my own story. Each family has its missing individual, its silences, and I m willing to explore the resulting feelings through this work. Claire Bourrassé – Alter Ego In the evening you re heading home alone. You will sleep alone at night. Sometimes you open your eyes, drowsy, your mind still plunged into a dream. It is there. Emptiness. In your lifetime you have felt it already many times. How can this void, by definition the absence of everything, be transformed into a feeling? You have to know that your shadow is a friend, the only one that is a constant; it accompanies your empty body and never abandons you. This book is a research into identity, which is based on duality, on the need to project on to someone else in order to define oneself. In the evening you re heading home alone. «ECAL Graphic Design» at swissnex San Francisco,16.06–25.08.2017,swissnex San Francisco In collaboration with swissnex San Francisco, ECAL presents an exhibition of projects created by students of the Bachelor Graphic Design and the Master Art Direction. Images HD ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne has long been recognised as a world reference in terms of – amongst others – graphic design. Be it in designing books, catalogues, magazines or posters, typography or digital projects, ECAL students are able to embrace all fields of this discipline and to masterfully perform a wide variety of assignments. This success is largely based on a policy of workshops allowing them to learn from the best Swiss or international graphic designers directly on the school premises. With this in mind, ECAL has had the good fortune of welcoming in recent years leading figures such as Ludovic Balland, Bibliothèque, Mirko Borsche, Thomas Buxo, Veronica Ditting, Europa, Johann Kauth, Jürg Lehni, Ari Marcopoulos, Maximage, Young Na Kim, NORM, OK-RM, Brian Roettinger, Hansje van Halem, Cornel Windlin and Job Wouters aka Letman. The exhibition and book “ECAL Graphic Design” largely retraces projects conducted in the Bachelor Graphic Design and Master Art Direction courses over the past five years in the framework of these visits, but also of other courses which have contributed to the School s reputation. Edited by the Gavillet & Rust studio, the book revolves around a long succession of tracking shots in which projects are not classified in categories, but organised by colour. The exhibition design orchestrated by Adrien Rovero is based on the same concept, allowing a total flexibility of the exhibition. «ECAL Graphic Design» exhibition Exhibition from 16 June 2017 to 25 August 2017. swissnex San Francisco Pier 17, Suite 800, San Francisco California 94111 www.swissnexsanfrancisco.org Book "ECAL Graphic Design" Distributed by JRP|Ringier Collection Anthologies & Art Theory www.jrp-ringier.com Edited by: Angelo Benedetto, Lionel, Bovier, Vincent Devaud (Graphic design), Gilles Gavillet (Graphic design), Alexis Georgacopoulos Authors: Angelo Benedetto, Alexis Georgacopoulos, François Rappo Photography: Philippe Fragnière Technical specifications: Hardcover, 225 x 295 mm, 160 pages, 64 color images, English/French, March 2016 ISBN: 978-3-03764-455-3 Price: CHF 48 / EUR 40 / £ 30 / US 49.95

"Corps-concept" Exhibition “Corps-concept” is an exhibition that reflects on contemporary conceptions of the body that underpin numerous ideological movements, including transhumanism. Issues regarding the body-object, the body-draft, body-commodity and the anthropological consequences of these different “conceptional reductions” will be examined. The aim of the exhibition is to offer an unprecedented insight into our current utopias and on the technoscientific driving force that irrigates these. From 21 My to 19 November at the Maison d Ailleurs in Yverdon-les-Bains. Opening reception 21 May from 5pm. At the invitation of Marc Atallah, director and curator of the Maison d Ailleurs, first-year Bachelor degree Photography students at the ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne tackled the very contemporary issue of transhumanism. For two semesters, they confronted this school of thought which advocates the advent of a new human being and contends that the progress of science and technology makes it possible to transcend human nature. The project was led by Natacha Lesueur, a French artist-photographer and teacher at the ECAL. This exhibition presents a selection of photographic and filmic works, reflecting the transdisciplinary training programme offered by the ECAL. By contrasting different visions on ways of shaping the humanity of tomorrow, these projects express the numerous controversies and debates regarding transhumanism, as well as its accompanying ideologies. UPDATE Exposition «Walk with Pierre Hardy» au Japon After Paris, Pierre Hardy & ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne are pleased to present the photo exhibition WALK WITH PIERRE HARDY in Japan. Exhibition open to the public from 18 May to 22 May 2017, from 12:00 to 19:00 PIERRE HARDY Yusen Building A-103 5-5-25 Minami-Aoyama Minato-ku, Tokyo www.pierrehardy.com On the occasion of Paris Photo, Pierre Hardy & the ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne present the exhibition "Walk with Pierre Hardy". Fifteen iconic models by the designer were visually reinterpreted by the students of Bachelor Photography under the direction of Philippe Jarrigeon. Additionally, a luxurious special publication marks the occasion. To be discovered from 11 to 13 November 2016 (10 am to 7 pm) at the Pierre Hardy boutique (9-11 Place du Palais-Bourbon). HD pictures: www.ecal.ch/en/1649 “I really enjoyed interacting with the students. At ECAL, my role was very different from that of a teacher coaching the students on their work – as I myself was the subject I knew the stuff inside out! Just show me half a centimetre of a heel and I instantly recognise the model which I created”, says Pierre Hardy. The ECAL Bachelor Photography students thus worked on various collections produced by the Parisian designer in the past fifteen years in order to give them a new visual interpretation. Photographer Philippe Jarrigeon comments on the method he chose to conduct this workshop at ECAL: “Together with Pierre Hardy s team we selected fifteen pairs of shoes in the archives – a purely practical decision which allowed us to keep the models as long as we wanted at ECAL. In addition, this allowed students to free themselves from seasonal trends. At the beginning of the workshop in October 2015, each student got a model on which to work by drawing lots”. This project allowed the students to question the relationship between photography and footwear, and by extension to confront the interconnection between photography and fashion. Milo Keller, Head of Photography at ECAL, observes that “Students, working without any business constraints in that case, are less formatted than a professional and therefore often offer unexpected approaches”. The results are indeed surprising and offbeat, sometimes even provocative or poetic, but always treat the original creations with respect. More Rules for Modern Life Asserting its wish to play with the flimsy distinctions between “objets d art” and practical objects and to question the legitimacy of an exhibition on the fringes of such an outstanding event as the Milan Salone del Mobile, ECAL has invited visual artist John M Armleder to curate an exhibition displaying side by side the works of students from the Bachelor Fine Arts and the Bachelor Industrial Design programmes. After having (re)visited some of John M Armleder exhibitions and seen his iconic pieces, the Furniture Sculpture among others, the students used their chosen materials and processes to devise their exhibition pieces, which they developed at ECAL during a full semester under the watchful eye of designer and professor Christophe Guberan and Stéphane Kropf, artist and Head of the Bachelor Fine Arts. Playing with scale, shapes, colours and materials, the exhibited works defy pre-established categories: a rocking zebra for gangling children, a handless clock, a minimal painting with maximalist details, taped ceramic vases, a menhir made from recycled plastic, concrete marble… All piled up in a visual cacophony that is happily deliberate. IKEA Festival – Let s Make Room for Life,04–09.04.2017,Officina Ventura 14, Milano IKEA invites LMX, a collective of ECAL Bachelor Fine Arts and Bachelor Media & Interaction Design students, to produce acrylic paintings with a programmable machine. Using the extensive possibilities of randomness, colour mix, superposition and serial production provided by this new machine, the students create numerous artworks. HD Images IKEA has invited LMX, an ECAL collective made up of students from the Bachelor Fine Arts and the Bachelor Media & Interaction Design programmes, to produce paintings with a programmable machine. In changing the machine original settings (x, y and z shifting positions, cyan, magenta, yellow, black and white percentages, nozzle size, paint flow, random parameters…) and in using technology to address essential issues in painting, LMX tested the creative and repetitive gesture potential allowed by the mathematical precision of the code and the infallible mechanism of the machine. During the IKEA Festival, LMX mass-produces some artefacts that were designed during a workshop that took place in the countryside around Zurich in February 2017, and continues to explore the potential of this machine, which showcases its production performance to the public. Opening hours Tuesday – Sunday, 10 am – 8 pm Wednesday, 10 am – 10 pm Officina Ventura 14 Via Privata Giovanni Ventura 14, 20134 Milano www.ikea.com www.ikea.today

ECAL presents The Future Sausage by Carolien Niebling,04–09.04.2017,SaloneSatellite, Rho A research project conducted at ECAL by Carolien Niebling, ECAL Master Product Design graduate. It explores the design and taste of the future sausage, while critically discussing alternatives to meat consumption worldwide. Tasting available at the stand. HD Images Sausages are one of mankind s first-ever designed food items. The exhibition presents a series of innovative sausages, which have been made in collaboration with a butcher (Herman ter Weele from Oene, Netherlands) and a chef (Gabriel Serero from Lausanne, Switzerland), using design, ingredients and techniques outlined in a book by Carolien Niebling, an ECAL Master Product Design graduate. As part of a research project conducted at ECAL, Carolien Niebling explains that “Today, sausages remain a cornerstone of our food culture. England alone has over 470 different types of breakfast sausages, and in Germany there are even sausage laws, dictating specific rules for the making of sausages. Now, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), we are facing a serious shortage of protein-rich-food. Meat, in particular, will be scarce. One reason for this is over-consumption: in today s world, we simply consume too many animal products. So, I wonder, can we look to sausages to provide a solution once again?” The book is available for pre-order from the 4th of April until the 14th of May 2017 on: www.thefuturesausage.com Opening hours Tuesday – Sunday, 9.30 am – 6.30 pm SaloneSatellite Hall 22 – 24, Stand S02 Fiera Milano, 20017 Rho www.salonemilano.it www.carolienniebling.net www.thefuturesausage.com

27.03.1977 ((1706:50)) 27.03.1977 ((1706:50)) aims to analyse forty years later, the different factors which led to the deadliest accident in aviation history—the Tenerife Airport Disaster—which occured in Los Rodeos Airport, in March 27, 1977 in the Canary Islands, in Spain. Gathering official and documentary sources of references, it is a visualization of the interferences, present under multiple sorts: temporal, visual, behavioral and audio. We wish by this book not only to investigate factors of danger in aeronautics, but also to shape a better future for Aviation Security and Air Traffic Control.

Workflow This project consists in a series of unprecedented experiments around the materiality of printed matter : ink, paper, printing techniques. Based on the available tools, various processes will be rigorously tested and random experiments will be carried out, then filtered and eventually presented in a publication, halfway between an artist book and a technical handbook. A first result is a database of color profiles for artists, designers and printers who are looking for a novel yet professional color management solution. These new tools can convert images for printing devices using two, three, four or five spot colors. It offers a large variety of combinations, from basic colors to metallics, neons and pastels.Main applicantsECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne Tatiana Rhis (project leader)Research team Periodseptember 2014 – december 2017Supported byECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne Strategic fund of the University of Applied Sciences Western Switzerland (HES-SO RCDAV)DisseminationWebsite colorlibrary.ch

ECAL inaugurates its new Print Centre,02.02.2017,ECAL, Renens Thanks to Canton of Vaud and to generous support from institutions in the region, ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne has inaugurated its new Print Centre at the heart of its campus in Renens, offering new state-of-the-art equipment to its students. These premises can be discovered during the ECAL Open Days 2017 on Friday 3 February (afternoon) and Saturday 4 February (all day). ECAL is constantly rewriting the book. The spaces made available in June 2016 the ECAL building by the Ateliers de la Ville de Renens have served to establish a unique Print Centre dedicated to students, which brings together, over close to 900 sq.m, a printing press (offset press and binding equipment), plotters, inkjet and laser printers as well as screen printing, lithography and etching workshops. Transformed this summer, fitted out at the end of the year, and finally equipped with new machines, including a Heidelberg 5-colour offset press, these new premises are now fully operational. But why develop a printing house and related techniques in an all-digital era? The main answer is the explanation of the acronym ECAL: Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne. The primary vocation of a SCHOOL is to teach know-how, to put fundamentals into practice, to encourage experiments and to provide skills in specific techniques. As such, a printing house is a great educational tool which is essential for a complete top-quality education. An art school without a quasi-professional printing house is not really an art school. The 600 ECAL students make this place their home to create or enhance their works. Graphic artists and photographers produce posters, magazines or books, industrial designers lay out portfolios, artists create editions, filmmakers print their posters. From an institutional point of view, all ECAL exhibition invitations, as well as numerous books and catalogues, are printed in-house, thus promoting the students achievements, but also highlighting the excellence of education in our Canton and region. Without a high-level printing facility on its premises, ECAL would not be what it is today - one of the world s top schools of art and design. And what would ART be without printing techniques and paper? Not much... No paintings, no books, no posters... Not to mention the contribution of techniques such as lithography, screen printing or etching, which are part of the history of art and which ECAL continues to develop, because this know-how allows widening the various media and promotes diversity in creativity. ECAL would like to thank Canton of Vaud, without which this project could not have been completed, as well as the generous institutions whose support allowed the development of the Print Centre: Loterie Romande, Sandoz Family Foundation and Fondation Casino Barrière de Montreux, Fondation ECAL+
