Motion Design - Animated poster – 2020 Selection of animated sequences made during a 3D course directed by Benjamin Muzzin. The students were inspired by a painting and transcribed it into three different scenes. This video showcases a selection of animated posters created during an intensive workshop week by students in Graphic Design and Media & Interaction Design. The goal of the workshop was to design the upcoming announcement posters for ECAL s future workshops. By exploring the possibilities of motion design, the students developed dynamic visual identities tailored to the school s various communication formats. These creations reflect their creativity, technical skills, and ability to engage audiences through a contemporary visual language.

ECAL at the Youth Olympic Games – Lausanne 2020,09–22.01.2020,Lausanne On the occasion of the Youth Olympic Games – Lausanne 2020 , ECAL particpates in several projects. On the occasion of the Youth Olympic Games – Lausanne 2020, ECAL particpates in several projects: --- Design of the cauldron, medal trays and podiums The cauldron, the medal trays and the podiums are three of the most symbolic elements of the Olympic Games. Second-year Industrial Design Bachelor s students from the ECAL were tasked with designing them. The students had to meet certain operational constraints and technical requirements: The cauldron must be able to be supplied with wood pellets, the result of a partnership between several organisations in the Vaud region, including the Lignum Vaud, which brings together all the regional players in the wood sector. This ecological innovation makes this cauldron the most eco-responsible in the history of the Olympic Games. It must also be removable and an integral part of the Games legacy. The podiums would have to be assembled outside at the last minute, often on uneven ground. They needed to be solid, light and large enough for several athletes. The medal trays had to be big enough to hold both medals and mascots. Cauldron Design: ECAL (Bachelor Industrial Design) Student: François Lafortune Production: C-FOR! + Ecole de la construction This cauldron project took inspiration from “freeskiing” culture, seeking to reflect it in both style and substance. Freeskiing is the world of skateparks and snowparks, with which many young people are very familiar. The installation comprises a mini jump and a ramp, with the cauldron placed at the top. The project s designer, François, envisaged that it would be an integral part of the Opening Ceremony and that the cauldron could be lit by a freerider. After Lausanne 2020, the installation is set to be converted into part of a permanent skatepark for the people of Lausanne. Podium Design: ECAL (Bachelor Industrial Design) Students: Louis Bétin + Theo Luvisotto + Estelle Rougerie Production: Ecole de la construction The podiums juxtapose the outlines of three mountain ranges where the competitions are being held: the Jura mountains, the Vaud Alps and the mountains of St Moritz. Plateaux des médailles Design and Production: (Bachelor Industrial Design) Student: Olivia Dall Omo The medal trays have coverings in the colours of the official hat worn by the volunteers. “The outfit is completed by a pair of mittens. So you ll be nice and warm, and all set to go cheer on your favourite athletes!” Mapping of the BodyCity Show Unique creation imagined for Lausanne en Jeux! - the animation program of the Youth Olympic Games Lausanne 2020 - BodyCity is a show where arts and urban sports meet in an impressive open-air setting, on the place Centrale of Lausanne. Five performances will take place in public on January 9, 11, 12, 18 and 19, 2020 at 6 p.m. "Bodies in fusion with the city", it is from this strong image that Nicolas Musin directed BodyCity, a contemporary show questioning the relationship of young generations to the city. On an open-air stage representing a city in constant mutation, more than 50 performers aged between 9 and 30 years will cross their disciplines from January 9, bringing together urban arts and sports suchas skateboarding, BMX, rollerblading, scooter, parkour and dance. Imagined within the framework of Lausanne en Jeux!, this show is above all a work of youth carried by art schools and urbandisciplines training centers established in the Lausanne conurbation. BodyCity was thus able to bring together different Lausanne actors such as the students of the ECAL (conception of video images) of the HEMU (composition of the original music and recording of the soundtrack), thedancers of the Ecole-Atelier Rudra Béjart (dance and percussion), JDS Events (hip hop, breakdance) aswell as the riders of La Fièvre and the tracers of X-Trem Move. A meeting between different cultures and disciplines that the director Nicolas Musin has managed to reunite in order to offer a unique and unprecedented show in Lausanne. The mapping of the show was thus created by the students of the Visual Communication Department (BA Graphic Design, BA Photography, BA Media & Interaction Design) under the direction of Vincent Jacquier, Angelo Benedetto, Jean-Vincent Simonet and Mitch Paone while editing was managed by Amaury Hamon and Clément Lambelet.

Smartphone Peripheral Companions The research project Smartphone Peripheral Companions explores new forms of interaction with the data flows passing through our smartphone, questioning the status of total object that this device has acquired. So much of contemporary culture and interactions is taking place through interfaces; interfaces are part of cultural expression and participation. Therefore, questioning the impact of the mechanisms underlying current smartphone interfaces is also a societal interest. The research team conducted a number of reflections around a broad vision of the issues related to the use of smartphones and the data flows that pass through them. In order to also collect contributions from smartphone users, they set up an online participatory platform, voluntarily moving away from the usual form of the scientific questionnaire. By imagining, designing and prototyping new objects or apparatuses, this project aims to offer proposals for re-appropriation, re-extraction of certain features locked in the smartphone, thereby allowing a different, more customizable access to data or functions. Consequently, fostering a shift from the glowing rectangle to a more detached and focused interaction, away from the screen. The main results of the project include a series of 5 to 10 objects offering alternative access to some data transiting through the smartphone. These semi-functional prototypes are documented and presented as images and films on the project website as well as made available for exhibition. A kit of tools and instructions to reproduce some of them, together with an ever-growing, participative collection of anonymous testimonies from smartphone is also accessible online.Main applicantECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne (project leader)Research team (research assistant) (research assistant) Andreas Sonderegger Visiting lecturerJesse HowardStudents, , , , , , , , Emily Groves, , , , , , , , , , , Periodseptember 2018 – february 2020Supported byECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne Strategic fund of the University of Applied Sciences Western Switzerland (HES-SO RCDAV)DisseminationWebsite smartphone-confessions.worldPartnerEPFL+ECAL Lab

BRUTAL 003 To celebrate the Paris Photo 2019 edition, the Bachelor Photography students of ECAL, under the artistic direction of Nicolas Poillot, translated the music of the producer IKAZ BOI into images. The visuals, sometimes smooth and neat, sometimes dark and rough, were produced by listening to the new project BRUTAL 3: an intimate album oscillating between romance and darkness composed with instrumental tracks only. Usefulless In his essay, Theory of Metamorphosis , philosopher Emanuele Coccia celebrates the “power of caterpillars” allowing them to transition from one existence to another without having to die first nor being born again. The caterpillar thus in its full autonomy shakes up the natural order of things. This in-between state materializes in the cocoon, an intermediate yet complete stage, totalizing more than the sum of two halves. The cocoon is a circumscribed territory which has no limits, not completely life, not totally death. This solipsistic space is plural, it is host to the liquid form, embracing simultaneity and different realities. The artworks presented here echo the principle of transition which govern this exhibition. Through their relationship to space or how they question the function of an art object, through the staging of intimacy, these works identify a limit and almost mechanically, ask what lies beyond. Usefulless is a quality specific to useful objects that are nowhere to be found when needed. Opening a middle way through the binary definition useful/useless , the term usefulless defines a transitional state of utility. Here inside the exhibition, the influence of context reveals the intrinsic ambivalence of objects, useful only based on a need, at a given time, for something or to someone. Usefulless opens a dialogue between the works of the students of the Master Fine Arts at ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne and pieces from artists whose respective practices explore similar avenues. "Workbays Village" exhibition in collaboration with Vitra,02.10–21.11.2019,Fire Station, Vitra Campus, Weil am Rhein Following a workshop led by Camille Blin and Erwan Bouroullec in 2017, Master Product Design students from ECAL present “Workbays Village”, a project inspired by Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec s customizable office partitioning systems manufactured by Vitra. Introduction by Erwan Bouroullec and opening reception on Tuesday 1 October 2019, from 6pm to 8pm at the Fire Station on the Vitra Campus in Weil am Rhein. The exhibition will be open from 2 October to 21 November 2019, from Monday to Sunday, from 10am to 6pm. Vitra Campus, Fire Station, Zaha Hadid, 1993 Charles-Eames-Strasse 2 79576 Weil am Rhein www.vitra.com DOWNLOAD IMAGES HD DOWNLOAD POSTER With Workbays, which they created for Vitra a few years ago, the French designers Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec, who regularly collaborate with ECAL, have developed a micro-architectural system that redefines the working environment and breaks with the typical rigid planning structure of offices. Thus Workbays create distinct areas where individuals or groups can retreat from the general office environment to carry out specific activities. The units come equipped with everything users need: work surfaces, seating, optional storage and power connections. The structure of Workbays consists of slim aluminium profiles and organically shaped wall elements made of pressed polyester felt. “The ECAL students suggested we devised new typologies for these working environments, adding novel features and supplying them with new accessories”, says Camille Blin, the designer and professor who headed the project. So the Master Product Design students worked for a full semester under the watchful eye of Erwan Bouroullec and invented new structures that call to mind Japanese 0capsule hotels, a prototyping workshop, a gym, a bar, a garden or a resting area. For each of these spaces, the students created specific and original objects, ranging from Bluetooth loudspeakers to miniature lamps reminiscent of stadium ones, desk pads-cum-bags, a semi-standing stool, a cable-covering carpet, in & out wastepaper baskets, multi socket trays or a desk partition with vases and drawing pins. A 3D animation film specifically created by TRAUM Inc. presenting these unusual Workbays can also be seen at the exhibition. Opening reception on Thursday 29 June 2017 from 6.30 pm to 21 pm at the Port des Créateurs Exhibition from 30 June to 2 July, from 10am to 6pm during the Festival. Then until 24 September, from Monday to Saturday, from 9am to 7pm. Le Port des Créateurs Place Savonnières 83000 Toulon www.villanoailles-hyeres.com www.ecal.ch www.vitra.com

Adrien Sgandura – Subjective Archive « Through its cultural and artistic influence, the city of Venice has marked many centuries of History. However, it is being weakened by the massive influx of tourist and global warming and tends to be becoming the mere scenery of its own representation. While filming Venice using fixed shots, I built a database. Distancing myself from the frozen iconography of the city, I extracted images from its daily life as it unfolded. The resulting Subjective Archive is the experience of a singular stroll recounted via a web platform: a voluntarily partial and subjective archive about Venice everyday life and the Venetians. » Through its cultural and artistic influence, the city of Venice has marked many centuries of history. Elisa Ribeiro – A lingua do Mar « A Lingua do Mar is a short-film shot in Nazaré, a small fishing village on the Atlantic coast of Portugal, north of Lisbon. The short-film takes the form of a documentary-fiction. Through four stories, it questions the connexion that people have with life and death, reality and fiction. » A Lingua do Mar is a short-film shot in Nazaré, a small fishing village on the Atlantic coast of Portugal, north of Lisbon. Belle Dune - "See You Later, Alligator..." A police investigation in Belle Dune, a small seaside resort in the north of France. This graduation film is a pilote of a series. A short film by Léonard Sinclair, photographed by Maxime Beaud Fiction / 18 min Synopsis The mutilated corpse of an English tourist is found in a tree, close to a small seaside resort in the north of France. Lieutenant Angela Jumcaucourt starts to investigate. Jérôme Montpied, a solitary young man from Belle Dune with few prospects, is profoundly changed by this macabre incident. It is as if he had found a new lease of life. Comment At Fort-Mahon Plage, the dunes are beautiful, but danger lurks. Thus begins episode 1 of season 1 in which Lieutenant Angela Jumcaucourt investigates the murder of a tourist whose mutilated body was found in a vacant lot. Tumultuous seaside atmospheres, anonymous letters, ghostly Cadillac, everything here contributes to the suspense and strangeness. Leonard Sinclair, with his meticulous direction, plays with the codes. As a good forensic scientist, he dissects genre films to better lose us and surprise us. Like a Bruno Dumont who has watched too much David Lynch s films or a Tati lost in a Yves Klein s painting, Léonard has fun to blur the tracks, very sandy by the way. Each sequence is constructed to distill its share of micro-details like so many potential clues, until transforming the film into a role-playing game both playful and totally addictive. There is something hypnotic about following this endless quest and we want more. In this seaside labyrinth, where nothing is ever totally stable, the fantastic is likely to appear at every slip of the whodunit. In the end, the only thing to watch out for is not so much the hypothetical episode 2 as the future of this talented young filmmaker. Raphaël Sohier / Sound editor
Agnese Làposi – Alma in the herd Alma visits her older sister, who lives in a commune in the countryside. She meets a boy and a stolen cow in the garden. Fiction / 25 min Synopsis Alma, thirteen years old, visits her older sister, who lives in a commune in the countryside. A stolen cow and a young man live in the garden of the house. The young girl struggles to come to terms with this new reality. Comment "When you take the horns off the cows, they can t communicate." For this reason, a cow has been kidnapped and hidden in the neo-rural, revolutionary and contemporary community where Ramona, a fulfilled young woman, lives. Alma, Ramona s younger sister, comes to visit her for the first time. A teenager with a long and urban silhouette. She discovers her sister s life and it is in her alternately curious, impressed and critical eyes that we discover the other members who live there. Alma wanders among them. From the sensitive look of the teenager emerges a poetry that enlightens each one, here a young woman who anoints her hair with oil, there a handsome young man, an apprentice manufacturer of explosives, who shows her the effects of his mixtures. Something could happen between them... or not. Agnese Làposi has chosen to keep Alma at a distance from those she meets. With small touches, she draws a portrait of this reserved young girl who has difficulty mixing with others. Alma will remain fascinated by the cow. And why not? These are the things of nature that we rediscover with the film Alma in the herd by Agnese Làposi. Annette Dutertre / Editor and head of the editing department of La Fémis
Adèle Beaulieu – Playing Hell 22 year old Ava, goes to stay with her grandfather who lives in the Franches-Montagnes. They walk through forests together looking for Antoine who had disappeared that morning. Fiction / 14 min Synopsis 22 year old Ava, goes to stay with her grandfather who lives in the Franches-Montagnes. They walk through forests together looking for Antoine who had disappeared that morning. Comment Ava goes to stay with her grand father, François, a whimsical character reclused on the edge of the moutains, in the small village Les Enfers. Like a road movie, the landscapes pass by, François confides to Ava that he has lost Antoine, his dog. Granddaughter and grandfather go in search of him. They make it their quest. Like a pretext for their meeting. Snow and fog envelop them. The space closes in on them. In the absence of a trajectory where it can unfold, time becomes an instant. It is lived on the surface of the image, on the surface of the faces. The quest for the dog becomes the quest for the other, which we scrutinize to guess its relief, to detect its informal history. Ava and François go deeper into the forest. In the snow, the mark of their passage, of their mysterious presence to each other. Their paths diverge and then meet again. A relationship takes shape, a link is created. Adèle prints it, the nostalgic black and white of the film reveals it. Suspended, impressionistic, delicate staging. The trace of its two characters - endearing and disconcerting - crosses us. A tasty impression of an encounter, of a fleeting and deep embrace in Les Enfers. A successful bet. Julietta Korbel – Still Working The guardian of a factory doomed to be demolished is faced with the end of his universe… Fiction / 17 min Synopsis In an abandoned factory destined to be demolished, Pavel s routine, the guardian, is disturbed by the arrival of a young engineer who discovers an unusual electric activity, a running turbine. Pavel will be faced with the imminent disappearance of the factory and with the end of his universe… Comment Julietta fell in love with an abandoned factory. A ruined setting, gigantic and inanimate, but which she inhabited from her first visit. The script was written on this particular relationship to the setting, intimate and organic. The characters came in the wake of this, as if out of this clay. The guard Pavel, his marked face, his massive and graceful dog. And the presence of the factory that oozes in all the shots, digs its imprint in time and space. The castle and its guardian. A body trapped in a larger body. A void, a collapse that probes another. Still Working, Julietta Korbel s film, is at once a portrait, a fable and a disturbing, haunted physical experience. Made of mystery, meaning and sensuality. David Lynch said that the hardest thing about making a film is falling in love with a story. That s what happened here. Thomas Cailley / Screenwritter, director
Léonard Vuilleumier – Dans ces rues / These streets will never look the same Leandre goes looking for a stranger named Tristan in order to give him some bad news about a mutual friend. Fiction / 23 min Leandre goes looking for a stranger named Tristan in order to give him some bad news about a mutual friend. However, when they meet, Leandre fails to deliver his message, which makes Tristan believe that they met by pure chance. He then puts Leandre to the test by making him collect signatures in the streets with him. As time, goes by, Leandre and Tristan get to tame each other and look at each other. They form a bond, but the true nature of what links them to the same boy remains ambiguous. Comment It is with modesty and a certain elegance that Léonard Vuilleumier takes up the theme of mourning and desire. An Eros and Thanatos in the streets of Lausanne. A sweet labyrinth where men hide the truths, look for encounters, flirt with the unspoken, find peace in the flesh. Léonard Vuilleumier fully committed himself to his theme by placing the actor at the center of his research, rethinking the rhythm and the filmic writing according to this character and his wandering. It is with feverishness but determination and belief that he delivers with These streets will never look the same a film that looks like him. Necessarily. Pierre Keller: 1945-2019,08.07.2019,ECAL, Renens It is with great sadness that ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne announces the passing of Pierre Keller, its director between 1995 and 2011. “We do everything seriously, without ever taking ourselves seriously.” This was Pierre Keller s maxim when he worked at ECAL, and it allowed him to move a small school in the Canton of Vaud up the ranks of Schools of Art and Design worldwide to become a member of the global elite. A native son of Gilly, Pierre Keller graduated as a graphic designer in 1965 from what was then the Ecole des beaux-arts et arts appliqués in Lausanne (now ECAL), and, while working as a teacher, won fame as an artist, photographer, and representative of the Council of State of Vaud in the organisation of the 700th anniversary of the Swiss nation. In 1995, he returned to ECAL, this time through the front door, and became its new director. For more than 16 years, he moulded ECAL in his own image – one that was vibrant, original and creative. He tackled all manner of challenges and headed up a number of major projects which all contributed to placing the school on the world stage. Pierre Keller has mounted exhibitions in all four corners of the world, forged countless partnerships with leading brands and institutions and was the brains behind the iconic ECAL building that has stood in Renens since 2007 which he, in partnership with his architect friend Bernard Tschumi, designed throughout. He also strove, at all times, to ensure that his students received the very best. While he has won widespread recognition (Prix de Lausanne, the French Ordre des palmes académiques, the Design Prize Switzerland, and has been invited to deliver guest lectures at institutions such as EPFL in Lausanne and the Tecnológico de Monterrey), his greatest source of pride was clearly the opportunity he enjoyed to help hundreds of young artists and designers to fulfil their potential. For all these things, ECAL would like to say to you, Pierre, a big THANK YOU!

Pauline Perret – Nous, Fabrice Gorgerat My graduating piece is a graphic transcription of a contemporary play. Nous , a play by Fabrice Gorgerat, was performed for the first time in February 2019. The play recalls a gun shooting that took place in 2016 at Pulse, a gay nightclub in Orlando, and questions everyone s role in such tragedies. The graphic direction aims to be as close as possible to the message and feelings that the author wanted to convey. Each scene represents a way of approaching this kind of event: actively, emphatically, passively or neutrally, and is presented in a self-contained object. Lausanne Jardins – 2019 From 15 June to 12 October at Lausanne Jardins 2019, discover some thirty gardens, including three projects created by ECAL Product Design Master students following a workshop with the Dutch designer Wieki Somers . The three projects presented on the Terrasse de Bellefontaine are: Le Point (Timothée Mion, Fabien Roy, Leonardo Vianello): Perched atop the roof of a car park above the level of the street, The Bellefontaine terrace is inconspicuous and little-used. To attract the attention and incite passers-by to discover this hidden garden, a sail unfolds every time the car park s air vent is activated, like a landmark up in the sky. The blast that comes from the bowels of the earth propels the piece of fabric that twirls around in the wind. Air is the invisible link between all the layers of this place and Le Point makes it visible. The Nocturnal Garden (Jeffery Lambert, Lorenz Noelle, Mathilde Lafaille): Sculptures during the day, stage directors at night: a series of lampshades bring the Bellefontaine terrace to life as night falls. They transform the park, diverting the rays of existing lights onto natural elements for a new experience of the garden. Each reflector creates little scenes with a dramatic interplay between light and nature that varies according to the wind and the rain. Entrance (Samuel Lodetti, Benjamin Bichsel, Jingxiang Zhang): There is something fascinating about gazing into water. Through the transparency of this element, hidden worlds appear and one can get lost in their infinity. Entrance plays on this fascination. Thanks to an optical effect, the park is connected to the various levels of the car park. The small fountain transforms into a bottomless abyss of stratified storeys, and visitors are invited to dive into this endless world. https://lausannejardins.ch/en/ From 15 June to 12 October at Lausanne Jardins 2019, discover some thirty gardens, including three projects created by ECAL Product Design Master students following a workshop with the Dutch designer Wieki Somers .The three projects presented on the Terrasse de Bellefontaine are:Le Point (Timothée Mion, Fabien Roy, Leonardo Vianello): Perched atop the roof of a car park above the level of the street, The Bellefontaine terrace is inconspicuous and little-used. Opening: Every day, from 10am to 6pm Vitra Design Museum Charles-Eames-Str. 2 D-79576 Weil am Rhein www.design-museum.de In partnership with the 3D printing company Formlabs, ECAL Master Product Design students present a range of innovative everyday life objects, produced through a print farm within the exhibition and sold directly on site. Projects from ECAL faculty and alumni are also available. The concept was imagined by Camille Blin, head of the Master Product Design, and Christophe Guberan, ECAL tutor. HD Images Brochure with explanations ECAL has turned Spazio Orso 16, a 17th century Milanese palazzo, into a contemporary production site and retail shop inspired by a new vision of digital manufacturing. Lately, most of the product design research into 3D printing has been focusing on new technologies and the shapes they can generate. The idea of this project is to present digital manufacturing as an industrial production tool thanks to a print farm composed of numerous machines printing the same pieces simultaneously. “ECAL Digital Market” offers functional and well-designed everyday objects, created by Master Product Design students as well as by a selection of ECAL-related designers (faculty members and alumni). The project looks into the possibilities of production on demand. It examines the changing environment of manufacturing processes, it emphasizes how fast and transparent today s design industry could become, and experiments with new design details that are too intricate to achieve with traditional manufacturing techniques. Finally, “ECAL Digital Market” highlights the role of the designer in this new production cycle. Thanks to the 3D printers and know-how provided by Formlabs, a large variety of objects such as combs, tape dispensers, mechanical pencils, shoehorns, coat hooks, scissors, spinning tops, shelves and many more are produced and sold on site by the students. The digital files of the objects can also be purchased online: www.ecal-digital-market.ch Press preview Monday 16 April, 4 pm – 6 pm Opening hours Tuesday 17 April – Saturday 21 April, 11 am – 8 pm Sunday 22 April, 11 am – 4 pm Spazio Orso 16 Via dell Orso 16 20121 Milano
ECAL x MacGuffin,02–26.05.2019,Arles + Istanbul Biennial Design "A School of Schools: Design as Learning" is a multi-platform knowledge-based exhibition that uses, tests, and revises a variety of educational strategies UPDATE: "A School of Schools: Design as Learning" is a multi-platform knowledge-based exhibition that uses, tests, and revises a variety of educational strategies. Curated by Jan Boelen — co-founding artistic director of the research program Atelier Luma — with Vera Sacchetti and Nadine Botha for the 4th Istanbul Design Biennial, organised by the Istanbul Foundation for Cultureand Arts, it presents the work of over 90 artists and designers from around the world. Among these, ECAL presents "ECAL x MacGuffin (read below). A School of Schools is presented at Luma Arles as part of the Guest Program of Luma Days #3,a yearly forum of art and ideas, which takes place in Arles from May 22to 25, 2019, and presents public events, conferences, professional workshops, displays and art installations. This year, the topic of the forum is: “TOGETHER, a declaration of inter- dependence”. From 02/05/2019 to 26/05/2019 Parc des Ateliers, 45 chemin des Minimes, 13200 Arles, France www.luma-arles.org/fr/articles/school-of-schools Can a magazine be a design school? Or a design school a magazine? This autumn, MacGuffin and Swiss art and design school ECAL present the results of their collaboration during the 4th Istanbul Design Biennial, which is all about design as learning, and learning as design. The exhibition explores the ways in which the two can enrich the other. Last autumn, Dutch product designer Chris Kabel tutored Bachelor Industrial Design students at ECAL in collaboration with design magazine MacGuffin. The students used the magazine s editorial model as a methodology to study the use of everyday things and to design objects derived from them. They modelled their approach on the way the magazine themes its issues, and chose MacGuffins like The Roof, The Shade, The Wheel, The Ruler, The Lock and The Socle as the focus of their investigations. Their research resulted in a range of observational studies, contextual reportages and visual essays on the materiality of the objects, to be used as a basis for designing new objects. The outcome is an exciting collection of narratives and objects that explore The Life of Things, presented in the form of a 3D magazine. From Umbrella Stories and Wheel Stoppers to Real-Life Rulers and a platform for the Bottom of Things. 22 September – 4 November 2018. A large selection of nails, screws, rivets, bolts and nuts is shown alongside products created by international designers and a new taxonomy of basic fasteners, graphically developed by Graphic Thought Facility. Opening reception 1.05.2019, 18 h – 20 h Dates 2.05.2019 – 29.05.2019 Wednesday – Friday 13 h – 17 h Galerie l elac 5, avenue du Temple CH-1020 Renens IMAGES HD U-Joints is a research project led by Andrea Caputo and Anniina Koivu, as well as a group exhibition that explores the idea of connections in design.Initiated on the occasion of the Milan Design Week 2018, the first U-Joints exhibition was an eclectic introduction to the topic of connections. Taking a look at the multifaceted world of joints, curators Andrea Caputo and Anniina Koivu broke joints open, organised them by material and production processes, reassembled them into prototypes, and used them in real-world applications. For eight days, U-Joints brought together 919 pieces – from the most common joints to design s most innovative ones, as well as those that have had the greatest influence on contemporary design. This captivating introduction launched the U-Joints research project, which is now in the process of investigating different kinds of connections even more deeply. Ultimately, the research project s findings will be published in a large volume that examines joinery in furniture and product design. U-Joints takes a comprehensive and interdisciplinary approach. Featuring technical information about joinery as well as stories and commentaries, U-Joints looks at human history through its details, and invites us to see our built environment in whole new ways. The ongoing U-Joints research is accompanied by a series of exhibitions. Each show reads like a chapter of the future book. The first chapter in this series is the current U-Joints exhibition at Galerie l elac at ECAL/University of Art & Design Lausanne. Dedicated to very basic fasteners, the exhibition features a large selection of nails, screws, rivets, bolts and nuts, alongside products created by 20 international designers and a new taxonomy diagram created just for U-Joints. Andrea Caputo says: “Within the world of ‘connections we imagine including any field of investigation, from architecture to product design to fashion. It is an extremely scalable concept, and we aim to investigate not only the fundamental constructive principles but also to conduct methodological analysis. The manufacture of the joint can coincide with an industrial, artisanal or extremely extemporaneous and experimental process.” Anniina Koivu says: “Designers appropriate standard connectors; they assemble and personalise them. Sometimes, they invent new joinery from scratch. Always, they use joints to create unique objects. But because a joint is often invisible, hidden elegantly inside an object, it can pass by unnoticed. U-Joints seeks to change this.” The Taxonomy of Joints Taxonomy is the science of describing, identifying, naming and classifying organisms. The Taxonomy of Joints traces the macrocosm of joinery in furniture and product design today. Starting from the most common production techniques, the structure creates a genealogical tree that is divided into four families, twenty subfamilies and a still-to-be-defined number of individual joints. The taxonomy exhibited here looks at basic fasteners: nails, screws, rivets, bolts and nuts, in 192 of their most common examples. Much like that of an organism, The Taxonomy of Joints can grow or change its form: it is a work in progress. The taxonomy on display was graphically developed by British studio Graphic Thought Facility. ECAL Milano 2019: Sound & Vision,09–14.04.2019,Spazio Orso 16, Milano On the occasion of the “Sound & Vision” exhibition, ECAL and the design research centre EPFL+ECAL Lab awaken your senses through a range of immersive experiences, from surprising ringing bells to audiovisual music recordings. ECAL showcases “Ring my Bell”, an offbeat collection of interactive doorbells, while the EPFL+ECAL Lab unleashes the potential of Virtual Reality with “Hands on Vision”. DONG! TRRRRRR! Or maybe even GLING! Or BLING!, MHHHH! And sometimes even BRAOUM! ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne presents an offbeat collection of interactive doorbells developed by first-year Bachelor Industrial Design students, under the joint guidance of Stéphane Halmaï-Voisard, Head of Bachelor Industrial Design, and Mathieu Rivier, a Bachelor Media & Interaction Design graduate. This project is part of the “Sound & Vision” exhibition, shown for the first time, in collaboration with EPFL+ECAL Lab, at the 2019 Milan International Furniture Fair. Sound and object design are two notions that industrial designers rarely have the opportunity to combine. Nevertheless, most everyday objects potentially produce sounds. Just pull up a chair, open or close a drawer or even flip a switch and you will create sound. What do all these actions have in common? Movement, friction and interaction which draw on the basic laws of physics to create tones. With this in mind, the students have offered a fresh and original take on an everyday object, one that is unremarkable yet never silent—the doorbell. They have designed a range of mechanical and electrical doorbells that offer a unique, sometimes even thunderous, sound experience. Well-known chimes step aside and are replaced by a curious metallophone triggered by a punch card reminiscent of traditional mechanical music boxes. The former door knocker is now amplified by a vibrant dong! The familiar buzzer has been replaced by an energetic drum roll. The everyday doorbell has been replaced by a curious device that makes a sound like thunder. At last, where you might expect a ding-dong, there is now a stertorous mooing mhhhh! These are just some of the contraptions displayed. Come in and ring! Hands on Vision In the “Sound & Vision” exhibition, the EPFL+ECAL Lab takes you to others worlds with “Hands on Vision”. The immersion turns into a sensory, social and nomadic experience. The design research shapes a new future for immersion and mobility. Six installations demonstrate how objects bring new life to virtual content, – in the company of celebrities such as singer, Nina Simone, and designer, Roger Tallon.
