Designers and artists were invited to explore the possibilities of the iconic USM Haller system, creating pieces that diverge from its conventional applications. Through her contemporary design lens, designer Livia Lauber utilizes the system s components beyond their modular constraints, resulting in a large floor light with an integrated shelf for books and magazines. The lampshade, crafted from Washi—a traditional Japanese paper—provides a soft contrast to the rigid metal frame. This project brings together diverse expertise, thoughtfully respecting and challenging traditional design rules through collaboration. design.swiss/livia-lauber Antonio Severi Master Product Design Ramel Series Developing a series of small objects for the home, Antonio Severi partnered with the Beirut-based Exil Collective to work with local Lebanese creatives in bringing their vision to life. Featuring items such as a candle holder, wall clock and ashtray, the collection is made from recycled aluminium within a sand-casting workshop where the choice of shapes, sand grit and metal were the result of an open dialogue between Severi and the artisans. VISIONS DU RÉEL: MASTERCLASS & ECAL FILMS Event
VISIONS DU RÉEL: MASTERCLASS & ECAL FILMS

VISIONS DU RÉEL: MASTERCLASS & ECAL FILMS,04–13.04.2025,Nyon As guest of honour at the 56th edition of the Visions du Réel festival in Nyon, filmmaker Raoul Peck will be giving a masterclass on Tuesday 8 April, organised in partnership with the Cinémathèque suisse. The programme also includes five films by the ECAL s Cinema Department and alumni. MASTERCLASS: RAOUL PECK Filmmaker, Haiti Born in Haiti in 1953, and raised in Congo, New York, France and Germany, Raoul Peck is one of the most important filmmakers of the late 20th and early 21st century. Over the course of the last forty years, the filmmaker has anchored his complex body of work, which includes internationally acclaimed feature films and documentaries, in a deep political commitment. The genesis of his cinematographic tales stems in equal measure from his multicultural personal experience, his journey as an activist, and what he refers to as a “Marxist reading” of the global economy. An indefatigable narrator of tales as seen from the viewpoint of those subject to domination, Raoul Peck has also questioned the links to capitalism in his own personal history, haunted by the ghosts of colonialism. His films examine omissions from official Western history, shining a light on aspects ignored by this account, often sketching a portrait of politicians or artists who have openly deconstructed it, such as Patrice Lumumba in Lumumba, La Mort du prophète, a feature film released in 1990, followed bythedocumentary Lumumba (2000), James Baldwin in I Am Not Your Negro (2016), and, most recently, Ernest Cole with Ernest Cole: Lost and Found (2024). Summoning the past to examine the present and rejecting any call to neutrality, Raoul Peck s work is a reinvention of activist cinema, which he transforms using a cinematographic, poetic and highly subjective language, freely intermingling genres and formats. Exterminate All The Brutes, a hybrid series in four parts (produced by HBO) – which will also be screened during the Festival – is a perfect example of this: it is a journey back in time, a radical re-examination of the history of European colonialism, from America to Africa, using personal, visual and literary narration to starkly revisit the darkest hours in human history right up to the present day. It won a Peabody Award in 2022, and was also the subject of a critical and literary essay. An event in collaboration with the Cinémathèque suisse. ECAL × SDOL, Horizon Ouest, Regards sur la métamorphose urbaine Project
ECAL × SDOL, Horizon Ouest, Regards sur la métamorphose urbaine

ECAL × SDOL, Horizon Ouest, Regards sur la métamorphose urbaine New transport infrastructure is emerging, while former industrial wastelands are giving way to modern buildings and redesigned outdoor spaces. Gradually, residents are moving into these new neighborhoods and adopting new habits.  To capture the first moments of life in these spaces, the association "Ouest lausannois: Prix Wakker 2011" has invited second-year students from the ECAL Bachelor of Photography program to observe them throughout 2024. This project highlights 18 ongoing construction sites or recently completed neighborhoods. Through their perspectives, the students offer original approaches to discovering, understanding, and appropriating these new spaces.  Photography maintains a unique relationship with the world around us, as it often depends on it. Far from merely documenting reality in a strict sense, it has the power to transfigure and reveal the invisible or the unspeakable. This is the approach adopted by the ECAL photography students at the request of the "Ouest lausannois: Prix Wakker 2011" association, as they explored various territories in western Lausanne. As part of this commission, each student was randomly assigned a specific location—be it a new neighborhood, a construction site, or a distinctive building—on which they worked over an academic year. Faced with spaces that were sometimes unphotogenic or even resistant to imagery, the challenge was to look beyond appearances, to resonate with these places in order to grasp their unique dynamics. The photographs question our perception of these recent landscapes and bear witness to the human activity unfolding within them. What do they reveal about our ways of living and moving? Who are the people inhabiting these spaces? What new landscapes emerge from these rapid transformations?  Through approaches that are sometimes sensitive and intimate, sometimes detached and analytical, or even driven by a formal fascination with the objects captured, the works presented reveal the density and diversity of everyday life. They bring forth a poetic vision of the city, inviting us to consider these territories not merely as functional backdrops but as fully-fledged spaces, rich with history, form, and identity—fluid and multifaceted, just like those who inhabit them.

Horizon Ouest,26.03–21.05.2025,Bussigny Observing Urban Transformation: ECAL Students Capture the New Spaces of Western Lausanne New transport infrastructures are being built, while former industrial wastelands are giving way to modern buildings and redeveloped outdoor spaces. Little by little, residents are taking over these new neighborhoods and adopting new habits. To capture the first moments of life in these spaces, the association "Ouest lausannois : Prix Wakker 2011" invited second-year students in ECAL s Bachelor of Photography program to observe them throughout 2024. The exhibition highlights 18 construction sites in progress or recently completed neighborhoods. Through their eyes, the students offer us original approaches to discovering, taming and appropriating these new spaces. At the end of the exhibition, everyone is invited to go and explore these places for themselves. Photography has a unique relationship with the world around us, because it often depends on it. Far from documenting it in the strict sense of the word, photography has the capacity to transfigure and reveal the invisible or the unspeakable. At the request of the "Ouest lausannois: Prix Wakker 2011" Association, ECAL photography students have adopted this approach, exploring various territories in the western part of Lausanne. As part of this commission, each student was allocated a specific location by lottery: a new district, a construction site or a singular building, on which he or she worked for one academic year. Faced with spaces that are sometimes unphotogenic, or even resistant to images, the challenge was to go beyond appearances, to enter into resonance with these places in order to grasp their own dynamics. The photographs on display question our perception of these recent landscapes, and bear witness to the human activity taking place there. What do they say about the way we live and move around? Who are the people who inhabit these spaces? What landscape forms are emerging from these rapid transformations? Through approaches that are at times sensitive and intimate, at times distanced and analytical, or guided by a formal fascination for the objects apprehended, the works presented reveal the density and diversity of everyday life. They give rise to a poetics of the city, inviting us to consider these territories not as mere functional backgrounds, but as spaces in their own right, bearers of histories, forms and an identity of their own - shifting and multiple, like those who inhabit them.DATES & VENUETravelling exhibition Bussigny 26.03 – 10.04 PL. SYMPOSIUM MASTER ARTS VISUELS Event
SYMPOSIUM MASTER ARTS VISUELS

SYMPOSIUM MASTER ARTS VISUELS,26.03.2025,IKEA Auditorium, ECAL On March 26, 2025, the Master of Visual Arts proposes the symposium Worldbuilding in an era of extreme fragmentation This one-day conference is an interdisciplinary event taking as its starting point the fragmentation thesis, based on the observation that our political conversations online – in forums, social media platforms, or discussion sites – are secluded into ideologically uniform groups. This tendency towards homophily is nothing new yet it has dramatically taken speed recently, to the point that it can be seen as a planetary condition of our times. The infrastructural changes in our digital networks – privatization, tracking, and algorithmic rationality – are not the sole explanatory factors. Finance capitalism, genocidal conflicts, climate crisis, as well as ambient anxiety all trigger responses that tend to favor withdrawal strategies. Designed in CH Made in JP

Designed in CH Made in JP Designed in CH, Made in JP is a collaborative project between ECAL Master Product Design, Karimoku New Standard, and Presence Switzerland. From 13 April to 13 October 2025, representatives from countries across the globe will gather to showcase innovation, culture, and sustainability at the World Expo in Osaka, Japan. For Switzerland s pavilion, MA Product Design students at ECAL were tasked with designing a stackable wooden chair to be produced in Japan by Karimoku New Standard, intended to furnish the lightweight, bubble-inspired architecture by Manuel Herz. Under the guidance of Augustin Scott de Martinville, the class developed ten chair designs, each offering a distinct perspective. Some draw inspiration from the pavilion s scenography, while others explore cultural iconography or celebrate the symbiosis between two nations—each unique in heritage yet united by shared values of craftsmanship and innovation. Of the ten designs, one was selected to be produced for the pavilion: HUG, designed by Jacob Kouthoofd Martensson and Min Xiyao, is a circular chair that stacks inversely—a feature that not only informs its name but also visually embodies the essence of collaboration. This versatile design accommodates a range of uses, from conferences to general pavilion seating. The final chair will be unveiled both in Osaka in the Swiss Pavilion at the World Expo 2025, and during Milan Design Week 2025, with the full project exhibited at the House of Switzerland. Le livre d’artiste - 24/25

Le livre d artiste - 24/25 As part of the editorial design course led by Anouk Schneider and Nicolas Polli, second-year Visual Communication students had the opportunity to design an artist s book during the first semester. This book project stands out for its contemporary approach, aiming to create an editorial object that harmoniously integrates form and content within today s publishing landscape. Students were encouraged to fully embrace their artistic freedom at every stage of the creative process—whether in terms of format, paper choice, binding, layout, illustrations, text, or typography. Within this course, the artist s book can take shape through various modes of illustration, such as photography, reproduction, contextualization, drawing, 3D, and more. The emphasis is placed on the author s artistic vision and the means implemented to bring it to life. Students take on multiple roles as editor, curator, and architect, thereby covering the responsibilities of art director, designer, photographer, stylist, illustrator, typographer, editor-in-chief, and copy editor. This course highlights contemporary editorial design by exploring the narrative potential of a carefully constructed content sequence. ECAL LECTURE – JEAN-CHARLES DE CASTELBAJAC Event
ECAL LECTURE – JEAN-CHARLES DE CASTELBAJAC

ECAL LECTURE – JEAN-CHARLES DE CASTELBAJAC,18.03.2025,IKEA Auditorium, ECAL An avant-garde designer and artist, Jean-Charles de Castelbajac anticipated what today constitutes the basis of new creation: art and fashion, detour and collaboration. Multi-disciplinary work of Jean-Charles de Castelbajac - art, fashion and design - revolves around a short chromatic range of blue, yellow and red, one of the finest representations of which was to dress Pope John Paul II, bishops and priests for the 1997 World Youth Day. Passionate about heraldry, the science of coats of arms, vexillology, the science of flags, semiotics, the study of signs, pop art and the world of childhood, his art and fashion bring together these dualities: the epic, the historic, the traditional and the alternative. He has collaborated with many artists, including Keith Haring, Lady Gaga, Robert Mapplethorpe, Pedro Winter and Pharrell Williams. He began his career as a designer alongside his mother, setting up Ko & Co in Limoges. His first obvious garment was a coat cut from his boarding-school blanket, as well as clothes made from mops, thus launching the concept of upcycling. He went on to found the Jean-Charles de Castelbajac fashion house in 1978. As early as the 1980s, he anticipated the current decompartmentalization of art and fashion by collaborating with artists of all disciplines on his shows: musicians, photographers and visual artists. He worked with Miquel Barceló, Ben and Robert Combas to create tableau dresses, with Robert Mapplethorpe, Keith Haring and Cindy Sherman to create invitations for his shows, and with Malcolm McLaren to create the music for his shows. In 1986, he was exhibited at New York s Fashion Institute and Technology. In 2006, at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, then at the Musée Galliera in Paris in 2007. Also an artist, he created a 3700 m2 fresco for Orly airport in Paris in 2015. In September 2018, he created a monumental work for the Biennale des antiquaires de Paris at the Grand Palais. From 2018 to 2022, he is artistic director of United Colors of Benetton. His artistic work is the subject of an exhibition entitled Le Peuple de Demain at the children s gallery of the Centre Pompidou in 2021-2022, presented at the West Bund Museum in Shanghai and at the Centre Pompidou Malaga in 2023. In 2022, he will also be present at the Mobilier National with the scenography for the exhibition No taste for bad taste, retracing 40 years of French design, and with a carte blanche entitled L atour d assises, focusing on French styles. In June 2024, he installs a 15-metre trellis sculpture on the wall of the Société de Géographie in Paris, called “L Ange Géographe”. He was chosen by the Diocese of Paris to design the liturgical vestments and ornaments for the reopening of Notre-Dame de Paris in December 2024.DATES & SCHEDULE18.03.2025 6pm Free entryVENUEIKEA Auditorium, ECALWEBSITEjeancharlesdecastelbajac.com

Fiction film workshop with Klaudia Reynicke Project
Fiction film workshop with Klaudia Reynicke

Fiction film workshop with Klaudia Reynicke The 2024 fiction film workshop for 2nd year students was lead by swiss and peruvian director Klaudia Reynicke. Head of workshop: "The aim of the second-year BA fiction workshop 2024-2025 was to write and direct short films on a very limited budget and to a very tight deadline. As head of this workshop, I chose to push these constraints to make it a real learning tool for the students. We took our inspiration from the principles of Dogma 95, while imposing a theme: ‘birth . The idea was to get the students to concentrate fully on the essence of filmmaking, to tell stories in the most raw and sincere way possible, without relying on devices often considered indispensable. This approach allowed them to explore storytelling and directing in a new way. Most of them played along. I ended up relaxing some of the rules of Dogme 95, which may seem contradictory. But this strict framework, which wasn t very sexy for many at first, served as a starting point, giving them a basis and constraints for experimenting, testing and researching. Then the projects took over. Everyone found their own urgency, their own rules. So we left Dogme 95 behind and concentrated on the films themselves. Films that are unique, sincere, sometimes raw, often powerful and as rich as they are profound, in all their splendour." Summer University in Veneto 2024

Summer University in Veneto 2024 In September 2024, 3rd year students explored the rich heritage of Italy s Veneto region, an area at the crossroads of artistic, cultural and industrial history. The trip gave the students an invaluable opportunity to immerse themselves between tradition and innovation, and to experience different facets of design and publishing through enriching encounters. On the way to Venice, a stop at Carlo Scarpa s Brion Tomb gave us an insight into the architecture of this funerary monument. In Treviso, a meeting with former student Federico Barbon led to a fascinating discussion on book design.VeronaIn Verona, a visit to the Fedrigoni paper mill, which specialises in the creation of top-of-the-range paper, gave them an insight into the manufacturing process and enabled them to design a collaborative project based on paper samples. The students also had the opportunity to explore the precious collection of manuscripts in the Biblioteca del Capitolare, a unique witness to the history of the written word.In Venice, they discovered the Art Biennale, exploring the exhibitions at the Arsenale and the Giardini. At the same time, a meeting with Benjamin Reichen from the Åbäke collective enabled them to find out more about his involvement in a screen-printing workshop dedicated to the rehabilitation of prisoners. A visit to the Grafiche Veneziane printing works rounded off this immersion in contemporary publishing.

Soft Photography Project
Soft Photography

Soft Photography Soft Photography is a research project conducted by the Master of Photography at ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne with the support of the HES-SO. It aims to shed light on the role of human emotions in the creation and reception of images produced using generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) or computer-generated imagery (CGI). Carried out from September 2025 to Spring 2026, this research aims to examine an unthought-of aspect of generative AI and CGI: the significance of human emotions, both in the creation of these tools (database annotation, software programming, cultural bias) and in the perception of the produced images (empathy, visual culture, subconsciousness) or their uses (capitalism of emotion, soft power, self-representation, political propaganda). The discussion and research surrounding the exponential development of AI technologies in visual culture often overlook this emotional component, even though it is structurally linked to these technologies, as they necessarily involve human apprehension. Unlike automated images, which frequently have an operational function and are only ‘seen by machines, images generated by AI and CGI are essentially created for humans, whether for social networks, advertising, industry, politics, or the artistic field. Soft Photography aims to examine the role and function of emotions by analyzing these new photographic tools and looking at specific occurrences, such as memories reconstructed in CGI or AI. Far from strictly formal experimentation, these practices demonstrate the complex entanglement between emotion, subjectivity, technical processes, and vulnerability. The project, therefore, aims to map, analyze, and experiment with the place of emotions within these new practices. Visual Identity BA3 S1 2024-2025 Through the prism of visual identity, this project addresses issues of graphic language and artistic direction. Each stage of the project examines an aspect of the development of a visual identity: research, concept, visual language, design and communication. RADIONModular visual identity designed for the RADION club in Amsterdam. Designed to be both recognisable and impactful, it adapts to all formats and uses in order to meet the needs of a nightclub in a highly competitive environment. HS UHT USTThis project explores a potential overhaul of the Swiss Shooting Federation s visual identity in order to place it in a more contemporary and rigorous context. By moving away from the traditional clichés associated with shooting sports, this new identity aims to reposition the federation by emphasising excellence, precision and modernity in order to appeal to a new audience. La jetée In 1962, French filmmaker Chris Marker released La Jetée. It was an experimental film made up of hundreds of 35 mm black and white shots. It tells the story of a journey through time in a distorted post-apocalyptic Paris. The visual identity is based on an original typography designed to pay homage to Marker s raw material and its French context, and transcribes the idea of sequencing and light projection. It evolves through a teaser for a screening of La Jetée and a booklet containing the entire film script. ICONOHow do you talk to images? Should exhibition images be shown or not? Collages, appropriationists, the whole world up to the present day, a constellation of images... Since the beginning of the 20th century, iconographic artists have been appropriating images produced on an industrial scale. The images of these same artists form the name of the fictitious exhibition ICONO. By re-appropriating them, identity uses their codes to communicate. ApneaNumbers are omnipresent in the world of freediving, whether measuring depth or the duration of an immersion. This visual identity is based on a variable typography with two axes, each representing one of these parameters. Duration is illustrated by the change in the fat of the counter-forms, symbolising how full the diver s lungs are. Depth is represented by the thickness of the contours, evoking the gradation of colours that darken with immersion. The animation of these variables creates a breathing effect, echoing the rhythm of apnea. Orpheum TheaterNow abandoned, the Orpheum Theater in New Bedford, USA, had its heyday at the beginning of the XXᵉ century. To illustrate its transition from 6ᵉ to 7ᵉ art, the identity of this film library traces the three major periods that marked this venue. It combines neoclassical ornamentation, as reinterpreted in the Art Deco era, with a typographic structure inspired by flyers from the golden age of theatre. The whole is geometrically

DISRUPTIONS EARLY VIDEO ART IN EUROPE

DISRUPTIONS EARLY VIDEO ART IN EUROPE,20.02–23.04.2025,FMAC, Geneva A collaboration with the research project Emergence of Video Art in Europe led by François Bovier, the exhibition Disruptions. Early video Art in Europe focuses on the first steps of video art in Switzerland and its connections with European art movements of the 1970s. In two successive chapters, the exhibition shows how this medium transformed the visual arts of the time. Video became a tool of experimentation and innovation, used to create performances, reflect on questions of identity, criticize television and design art installations. Disruptions presents a diversity of practices, then shows the evolution of video art through the manipulation of the audio-visual signal to produce new images. Works from the FMAC s video collection are exhibited alongside European creations, offering a rich dialogue between similarities, differences, influences or simple coincidences.DATES & SCHEDULEChapter 1 (1969-1974) 20.02-19.03 Chapter 2 (1975-1979) 27.03-23.04 Wednesdays and Sundays 12 am to 6 pm (Closed on 20.04)ADDRESSFMAC Écoquartier Jonction Chemin du 23 Août 5, 1205 GenèveOPENINGChapter 1 (1969-1974) Thursday 20.02, 6pm Chapter 2 (1975-1979) Thursday 27.03, 6pmWEBSITEfmac-geneve.ch

HEAT PUMPS FOR VIESSMANN Article
HEAT PUMPS FOR VIESSMANN

HEAT PUMPS FOR VIESSMANN For Viessmann, ECAL Master Product Design students are rethinking the aesthetics of heat pumps, combining innovation with harmonious integration into the urban landscape. Heat pumps are energy-efficient household climate systems essential for transitioning to renewable energy and combating climate change. Typically installed outside close-by to buildings, they are becoming common visual elements in urban landscapes, often resembling air conditioners with limited design variety across brands. To reimagine these essential typologies, Viessmann, a world leading Heat Pump producer, invited ECAL Master Product Design students to develop innovative concepts, resulting in designs that challenge norms and explore new visual identities of heat pumps.

Editorial Design BA3 2024-2025 Project
Editorial Design BA3 2024-2025

Editorial Design BA3 2024-2025 The third-year students had to produce an edition over half a term, choosing as their subject an event that had appeared in the newspaper on the date of the first lesson. In a world saturated with images, photography becomes a trophy, often overshadowing any ethical considerations. This phenomenon is striking in tourism, where capturing replaces understanding, reducing individuals, landscapes and cultures to mere visual objects. This edition explores these abuses through images printed by acetone transfer, retaining only their imprint. A materialization of the erasure of the subject in favour of its photographic trace. Réclamer l image Avoir du chien is an editorial proposal on the unique link between fashion icons and their pets through the ages. It s a journey into these relationships, from the intimate to the public sphere, and their mutual influence, whether on clothing style or the way people think and create. From Choupette to Toutou or Balthazar, this fascination with four-legged companions extends to the world of fashion, where they can become a veritable source of inspiration. After all, isn t it said that like master, like dog? Avoir du chien Who has the power to establish a heritage? When a selection process based on elitism is imposed, it leads to the obscuring of cultures, traditions and folklore. This book explores the issues involved in heritage preservation through the lens of a vanished building whose history lives on: the Bastille. Destroyed during the French Revolution, it survives through a proliferation of engravings, replicas and fragments scattered all over Paris. La Bastille Once upon a Hoax; a skeptic s fairytale Once upon a Hoax; a skeptic s fairytale is a hybrid of fairy tales and fake climate sceptic reports. By placing the arguments of climate deniers in a fairytale universe, their absurdity is exposed by putting them on the same level as imaginary stories. The Storm Boris is a book that explores the formation of occluded cold low storms through the example of the Boris storm, which occurred on 11 September 2024.  The book follows the four key phases in its development. Paper types and sizes have been defined according to temperature and atmospheric pressure, allowing a physical understanding of the storm s dynamics. The Storm Boris

The Picture-Writer. Warja Lavater, Graphic Designer and Illustrator Project
The Picture-Writer. Warja Lavater, Graphic Designer and Illustrator

The Picture-Writer. Warja Lavater, Graphic Designer and Illustrator This project investigates the work of the graphic designer and artist, Warja Lavater, an internationally recognised Swiss graphic designer, illustrator, bookmaker, filmmaker and artist. Amongst Warja Lavater s (Winterthur, 28 September 1913 – Zurich, 3 May 2007) most famous designs is the three-key logo for the Swiss bank UBS, which the bank – then named Schweizerischen Bankverein – began using in 1938. Yet Lavater is far much more than these three keys. Although the emblem is known the world over and her work was appreciated internationally during her career, recognition in Switzerland came late, overshadowed notably by her more well-known husband, the designer and artist Gottfried Honegger. For instance, it was only in the 1990s that the Canton Zurich awarded her the art prize for her lifetime work.  The scholarship on her work has accordingly been sparse; the present research corrects this gap. During her extensive career, Lavater created posters, logos, packaging, illustrations, installations for exhibitions and artworks. She is especially known for her many experimental artist books and what she called “folded stories”, a series of leporellos (accordion-style publications) adapting familiar tales as well as new stories in a pictorial manner. These books used a formal vocabulary based on a drawing system devised by the designer, which translated complex stories into symbols and signs. To describe her work on these publications, the designer coined the term Bildstellerin, a portmanteau which translates as “picture-writer”. By documenting her oeuvre, the research is not only going to improve the scholarship on a designer, but also more widely contribute to the historiography on female graphic designers in the 20th century, whose contributions remain largely understudied and overshadowed by their male counterparts. The research also contributes to a lesser-known side of Swiss graphic design history by providing scholarship on a designer working outside the canon of the Swiss Style. The results are presented in a richly illustrated publication which makes available previously unpublished visual material and represents the first academic monograph on the designer. Image Creation BA3 2024-2025 Third-year students had to complete an image creation project based on a free subject and medium. A Website is a Room A Website is a Room explores the concept of websites as physical spaces, reimagining the digital realm as places with spatial qualities. Each poster visualises the internet as a concept: users, website, network and data. The project questions how we ‘inhabit digital spaces, translating digital experiences into environments. fragments figés This project explores the intimate, revealing what is usually hidden. It s a conversation about emotions and relationships with objects, recorded and then transcribed. Selected extracts are highlighted and displayed in frames, transforming these words into tangible traces of an ephemeral moment. Par Toilet Break Toilet Break Magazine is a travelling, collaborative magazine dedicated to toilets. Each issue explores the relationship that people have with these spaces, which are both communal and intimate. Through personal accounts, a series of images and societal reflections, it highlights issues such as accessibility, urban planning and the sharing of public space. This first issue, conceived in Lausanne, invites us to take a break. Là où dansent les papillons "Là où dansent les papillons" is a textile book that unfolds on the floor, inviting children to interact physically with the story. By deconstructing the form and narrative of the classic book, it becomes an immersive space where playing, lying down and wrapping oneself up become a form of reading. Par A guide to print a book by hand A guide to printing a book by hand explores printing in a prison environment, developing an accessible technique using the materials available in a prison. The aim is to turn constraints into opportunities, by enabling a book to be printed in several copies, where creativity becomes an act of resistance and connection. Photographic revelation Project
Photographic revelation

Photographic revelation Process The notion of Process, in the context of this course, can mean developing a project in which the students focus on the process rather than just the concept or the results. This should allow them to experiment, to look for new solutions, to explore unexpected paths, techniques and forms, to lose themselves and find themselves again. Sometimes we give up on an idea for fear of failure, of not having a strong enough idea or of not succeeding in producing sufficiently interesting images. The idea is for the students to free themselves from these injunctions so that they can explore their ideas, desires, obsessions and desires more freely.

ECAL at artgenève

ECAL at artgenève,30.01–02.02.2025,Palexpo, Geneva For Art Genève 2025, Bachelor Fine Arts students have come up with ‘Dont Be Happy, Worry , a creation that grew out of a workshop given by the American artist Kenneth Goldsmith. This collaborative project by ECAL Bachelor Fine Arts students challenges conventional perspectives on art and meaning. Inspired by an intense and thought-provoking workshop by Kenneth Goldsmith, the students explored subtle signs of life and everyday details, transforming wandering thoughts into a carpet: not as a design, but as a detour; not as a statement, but as a collection of overlooked absurdities. It s a soft landing for stray thoughts, misplaced objects, and the kind of meaning that sneaks up on you, waiting to trip you up when you least expect it. Kenneth Goldsmith is an American poet, artist and critic, founder of the online archive ubuweb.com and professor at University of Pennsylvania. His writing is motivated by his own 2007 manifesto “Uncreative Writing” and is often a collage of found material. VR Sequences 2024

VR Sequences 2024 Unofficial VR music video projects created by 2nd-year students in Visual Communication, specializing in Graphic Design and Media & Interaction Design. Working in groups, the students were given full freedom to experiment and develop creative, exploratory, and original approaches, combining narrative and visual worlds. Inspired by selected music tracks, they imagined immersive stagings where sound and image interact to create unique sensory experiences. These projects were carried out as part of the course supervised by Sami Benhadj. Psychemorphosis By , , This work follows the initiation journey of imaginary flying creatures. Born into an unknown world, they traverse a realm of shifting textures and landscapes, symbolizing their evolution. As they progress, they undergo a ritual marking their transformation, a transition into a new world. The tunnel walls and proportions gradually distort, symbolizing the protagonist s rising anxiety, akin to Alice s syndrome in Wonderland. As the distortions intensify, the space becomes increasingly oppressive, evoking mental claustrophobia. The distortions suddenly vanish, marking a return to calm. The aim is to evoke the oscillation between anxiety and relief, a mental transformation through visual distortion within a temporal loop. Their 3D bodies are animated using rudimentary techniques, blending high and low-tech methods to create a hybrid language of movement. The characters move like puppets, with gestures that blend contemporary dance and low-tech animation. The two figures face each other on a road, riding motorcycles in a tense standoff, like a duel. This culminates in a crash, a moment of lightning-strike intensity that propels them into the air, marking the beginning of their surreal connection. SWISS DESIGN NETWORK SYMPOSIUM Event
SWISS DESIGN NETWORK SYMPOSIUM

SWISS DESIGN NETWORK SYMPOSIUM,04–05.12.2024,ECAL, Renens Design disciplines have entered the academic world in Switzerland relatively recently. Swiss design schools have only been required to perform research since the end of the 20th century to be qualified as universities of applied arts. Yet what shape does this research take? Design has become an academic discipline producing original knowledge in traditional formats. However, the discipline has designerly ways of knowing that are yet to be fully recognised and understood. The paradigm of design research, or research through design, supplements new knowledge with the production of new designs, such as prototypes, visualisations, performances, and exhibitions. These new, non-strictly bibliographic formats are relevant for their impact on design schools and audiences. Moreover, AI technologies threaten the scientific paper format as the ultimate form of knowledge transmission. This symposium questions the status of design within the academic system and examines how knowledge is produced by design disciplines. It aims to provide examples of virtuous practices and discuss the relevance of design research as a framework in the medium and long terms. We invited practice- and theory-based contributions anchored in design disciplines and cross- or transdisciplinary approaches that present examples of research through design, discuss methodological and epistemological issues, and offer novel ways of approaching practice-based research.DATES & SCHEDULE04–05.12.2024 Free entry under registrationWEBSITEresearchday.chVENUEECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne Av. du Temple 5 1020 Renens

ECAL X KVADRAT - SUIT UP Project
ECAL X KVADRAT - SUIT UP

ECAL X KVADRAT - SUIT UP For this project, the students had to design a seat, or rather requalify and rehabilitate a chair or armchair using existing models such as the monobloc, aluminium bistro chair, or deck chair, as the base structure. Employing Kvadrat upholstery textiles, the designs had to be reversible, meaning it should not alter the existing structure. While the original function of the chair could be maintained or altered, the proposals aimed to improved the comfort and aesthetic character of the seats. RAVIOLI CHAIR by The entire project aims to enhance an affordable chair – the Transat – by bringing the chair, which is often associated with being "accessible, practical, for outdoor use," indoors and giving it a more unique and comfortable design. Using fabrics, padding materials, and a sewing machine, where technique plays a central role, the focus is on an intensive exploration of different ways to manipulate textiles in order to create an exceptional quilted pattern. The chair is completely covered, so the original shape disappears, and no association with the Transat can be made. The Transat is thus used as a framework to create a new indoor lounge chair. Some say that the best product [sustainability speaking] is the one that already exists. SUIT UP aimed to make us reflect on our relationship with furniture, the comfort it brings us and the legacy of upholstered furniture; to take a critical look at how these products are manufactured, distributed, enjoyed and discarded today. Following a selection of the projects.Strapp by Strapp utilizes the existing wooden frame of the deck chair to hold two sets of fabric loops tactfully sewn and interwoven with each other. "Strapp" can be mounted onto the chair frame during its assembly, thus becoming an integral part of the chair. The woven structure appears flat but adjusts comfortably to the person seated. The Strapp design was created to enhance the comfort of the deck chair. The material used is a cool wool upholstery fabric, making the seat soft and cozy. YUPPIE CHAIR by Yuppie Chair is a project aimed at creating a cover for the monobloc chair, thus transforming this outdoor chair into an indoor chair. The project draws more inspiration from the fashion world, as in its initial phase, it was oriented toward bridal gowns. The goal was to design a cover inspired by the yuppie style of the 1980s, using Kvadrat upholstery fabric. It was necessary to find a way to merge the language of fashion with furniture. ECAL LECTURE – MATHIEU LEHANNEUR

ECAL LECTURE – MATHIEU LEHANNEUR,08.10.2024,IKEA Auditorium, ECAL ECAL welcomes Mathieu Lehanneur for a lecture on October 08, 2024. There s a word that often comes back to Mathieu Lehanneur s lips: magic. The French designer infuses his work with a touch of the irrational to arouse curiosity, provoke emotion or evoke wonder. Known the world over for his work and his talent for bringing together art, design, science and technology, the creator, born in 1974, is one of the few designers of his generation to embrace so many creative fields. His radically multidisciplinary approach is illustrated by the broad typology of his projects: from objects to architecture, from art to products, from one-off pieces to cutting-edge technologies. Mathieu Lehanneur produces and distributes his creations worldwide via his eponymous brand. Following the inauguration of the Factory, the designer will unveil across the Atlantic his new Pied-à-terre in New York in spring 2024. This exclusive space, located in one of the city s most beautiful skyscrapers, will be the setting for his universe and the dialogue between his latest pieces. Mathieu Lehanneur is a leading figure in the world of design, and winner of the “Grand Prix de la Création de la Ville de Paris”. His work can be found in some of the world s most important public and private collections, including the Centre Pompidou and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, as well as the Museum of Modern Art in New York and SF-MoMA in San Francisco.DATES & SCHEDULE08.10.2024 6pm Free entryVENUEIKEA Auditorium, ECAL

VENUEHochschule für Gestaltung und Kunst Basel FHNW Freilager-Platz 1, 4142 Münchenstein b. BaselDATES & SCHEDULE04.10.2024 6:30pmWEBSITEagi-open.comLott of Prints was born of a week-long workshop led by , where a class was invited to design decorated, offset-printed lotto grids. At the end of the week, an original lotto took place, with prestigious graphic objects - posters, books, fanzines - as prizes for the winners. The enthusiasm generated by this initiative gave birth to this playful and artistic concept. This year, the AGI Open, a conference proposed by members of Alliance Graphique Internationale, will be held in Basel on October 3 and 4. The organizing committee, seduced by the Lott of Prints concept, asked the ECAL to organize the first extramural edition of this event. On October 4 at 6.30pm, join us at the Hochschule für Gestaltung und Kunst Basel (HGK) to try your luck at this new edition. The event will be hosted by a team of ECAL students and will feature exceptional prizes donated by AGI Suisse members, ECAL and several partner studios. The 8th edition of the Bouse de la Fondation USM honors the project by Rebecca Alfandary, Emma Louise Grosu and Phinn Sallin-Mason, students in ECAL s Visual Communication department. Anthracite is a reflection of the night sky, which is no longer as dark as it should be. The project focuses specifically on Swiss biodiversity, and aims to raise awareness of the significant impact of light pollution on pollination. It highlights how artificial light disturbs nocturnal insects, interfering with their natural behaviors and ultimately threatening their existence. Today, 60% of Swiss moths are threatened. The project, which combines powerful images with specific information and solutions, consists of a book, a video and an image installation specially designed for the La Becque garden, where it will be on display from September 19 to 22, 2024.VENUELa Becque | Artist Residency Chemin de La Becque 1 CH-1814 La Tour-de-PeilzDATES & SCHEDULE19.09–22.09.2024 11:00–19:00 Free entryWEBSITEfondationusm.org
