SORTIR DU CADRE – ECAL + DECATHLON Project
SORTIR DU CADRE – ECAL + DECATHLON

SORTIR DU CADRE – ECAL + DECATHLON On the occasion of Paris Design Week 2024, DECATHLON is partnering with ECAL s Product Design Master s programme to unveil "Sortir du Cadre", an installation showcasing two prototypes of electric-assisted trekking bikes based on research into eco-design. Through this collaboration, DECATHLON engages the younger generation of designers around eco-design themes. These concept bikes, envisioned by students from Product Design Master s  programme, express a vision of the future in which sustainable development and the pleasure of outdoor activities go hand in hand. Galva by Justus Hilfenhaus & Jiahao Huang Data collected* by DECATHLON show that steel is far less polluting than aluminum in almost every aspect of bicycle production. Yet most e-bike frames today are made from aluminum. Based on this observation, Galva offers a galvanized steel frame in which the battery is integrated and protected. To limit excess weight, the frame uses a minimum of materials while retaining its strength. Production is based mainly on tube stamping and bending, cold processes that consume less energy. Galvanizing the steel also provides a durable coating, guaranteeing the frame s longevity. *Based on the LCDN 3.1 database provided by the European Commission. E-Venture by Gabriella Duck Garnham, Aurelia Pleyer & Yichen Wu Inspired by the structure of the human body, E-venture revisits the anatomy of the bicycle by offering a more frugal alternative. A sleek, skeletal steel frame integrates electrical components, creating space inside the bike s “skin” to store the elements needed for touring. The E-venture s skin is made from unused textiles from DECATHLON s camping range and adopts the layering principle used for outdoor clothing. This design aims to offer flexible, lightweight storage, ideal for long trips, yet still suitable for everyday commuting.

Shaping the future of cinema: ECAL listen to their graduates

Shaping the future of cinema: ECAL listen to their graduates Just a few days before the opening of the Locarno Film Festival 2024, where several ECAL films will be shown, ECAL and HEAD unveil the results of a survey aimed at shaping the future of cinema training. To guide the development of their HES-SO Bachelor s and Master s programs in Film, the Film Departments at ECAL and HEAD have collaborated to conduct a survey of their graduates. To carry out this project, the research and polling institute gfs.bern was commissioned to design the online questionnaire, while the Observatoire romand de la culture was responsible for organizing focus groups. This is the first initiative of its kind to be carried out among film graduates. Two key findings emerge from the survey: 77% of graduates surveyed are currently working in the film industry Nearly 2/3 of graduates surveyed would choose to study film at ECAL or HEAD again The aim is to fine-tune ECAL and HEAD film courses by analyzing the career paths and feedback on the academic experience of the last fifteen graduating classes. This information is essential for making informed decisions to improve the curricula.

ECAL AT LAUSANNE JARDINS,15.06–05.10.2024,Lausanne To mark Lausanne Jardins 2024, ECAL s Bachelor Industrial Design is presenting two projects designed to make the most of the shores of Lake Geneva. MIRADOR by Victoria Guffroy et Noé Chassot Mirador is a giant watery playground on the shore of Lake Geneva. Three stainless steel water cannons, arranged in a triangle, pump water from the lake and spray it over long distances, providing both fun and relief from the summer heat. Once the cannon is full, simply press the handle to propel the water in the desired direction. Fire away! PIERROT by Charlotte Dubois Pierrot—a homophone of the French words “pierre” (rock) and “eau” (water)—evokes two characteristic features of the shore of Lake Geneva. These rocky outcrops are punctuated by platforms of different sizes, small ones for crossing and large ones for relaxing on, allowing bathers to reach the lake while protecting the delicate and rare ecosystems that surround them. These platforms, constructed from wood and wire mesh filled with pebbles, hug the shape of the rocks and provide a new habitat for biodiversity to flourish. Here, the wire mesh—a popular architectural feature—holds large quantities of rocks, exploiting the weight, shape and other characteristics of this natural, locally available material.TEACHERVENUEPromenade de Vidy 7 1007 LausanneSTUDENTSMirador: Victoria Guffroy , Noé Chassot Pierrot: Charlotte DuboisDATES & SCHEDULE15.06-05.10.2024WEBSITElausannejardins.chPARTNERSMirador: Metal-System Diserens Sàrl Pierrot: Ateliers de menuiserie - Ville de Lausanne, Centre de formation C-FOR!

In the first season, with the complicity of Claude Emmanuelle Gajan Maull, the young photographers have fluidified the iconic bottles with their gendered silhouettes — Le Mâle, Le Classique, Le Beau and La Belle — in a fresh LGBTQIA+ perspective. With this upcoming season, the project evolves around the Scandal fragrance, with the creation of still lives in which the liquid, dry and organic contrasting textures evoke the essence of the perfume, its bottle design and its complexities. Through staging, the perfumes become the backdrop for stories of transgression and fantastical projections. Under Your Smell offers a hypnotic and immersive experience through monumental fabric prints all around the exhibition areas. Giant image-cushions welcome the public to lay down and celebrate gender fluidity and the ever changing definitions of beauty and self expression.RELATED EVENTS

In 1992, an explosion put an abrupt end to Le Corso s activities. The building was demolished, and the remains of the nightclub have since slumbered in silence, darkness and humidity beneath the square laid out on its site. ECAL x FREITAG - Access over ownership Project
ECAL x FREITAG - Access over ownership

ECAL x FREITAG - Access over ownership Second-year industrial design students collaborated with Zurich-based brand FREITAG Lab, leveraging their expertise in environmental awareness, material upcycling, and the circular economy. Using the FREITAG manifesto as a foundation, they developed new shared products centered on the principle of "access over ownership." Under the direction of designer Christophe Guberan, students have explored various options for borrowable items. Particularly relevant for temporary-use clothing, accessories, and furniture, this approach enabled the young designers to benefit from FREITAG s expertise in circular economy, material upcycling, services, product development and disruptive innovation. “Design has the responsibility and power to make positive changes towards a circular future. We shared our know-how with the students to raise their awareness of this vision”, says FREITAG Circle Lead Product Design and Development Tu Van Giang. Seeking to fundamentally alter the consumer experience through product design itself, ECAL and FREITAG invite consumers to rethink their relationship with goods while adopting a more sustainable and conscious lifestyle.NEBULA by Disposable plastic ponchos are often used by tourists as a quick fix to stay warm and dry while travelling, but they are as quickly worn out as they are quickly discarded. Made from reclaimed B-grade car airbag textile, NEBULA is designed to replace single-use plastic ponchos. Designed to be as simple as possible to produce, one size fits all and easy to clean and maintain, without compromising on quality and comfort. The ponchos would be borrowed and returned to FREITAG stores, but could also be returned to hotels or mailboxes for convenient retrieval while travelling. Pairs stylishly with the FLAT BOOTS overshoes. FLAT BOOTS by , Most of us own rain boots that we only use a few days a year, according to the weather. FLAT BOOTS are waterproof overshoes that you can borrow for as long as you need them for those rainy days, outdoor activities, or if you ve forgotten your boots when you re on the road. The overshoe features a thermo-welded heavy-duty tarp upper and a rubber sole. Its unique split sole design allows the boots to be rolled up for easy storage and optimised production. Combined with the NEBULA poncho, they would keep you dry while you re out and about. PACK-A-ROOM by , & Thought for students who are most likely to move from one flat to another, study abroad for a semester or have an extra flatmate for a few months, PACK-A-ROOM is a collection of flatpack furniture that is easy to transport and assemble. Made from B-grade airbag and tarp, fitted on a frame made of standard pipes and robust Maker Pipe connectors; the use of modular and detachable connecting parts allows for durable, expandable systems and extends the life cycle of the furniture. Comprising a bed, wardrobe and chair, you would have everything you need to feel at home in just a few turns of hex key. FIESTA KIT by It s party time! You go to the corner shop to buy everything you need: disposable plates, disposable glasses, disposable napkins and, of course, decorations, garlands and disposable balloons, all of which will be thrown away at the end of the day. The FIESTA KIT offers an alternative to disposable garlands and balloons. Made from truck tarp off-cuts from FREITAG bag production, rolled up in a handy pouch, it is a unique and colourful decoration option for celebrating more consciously. F-BÖÖTLE by In Switzerland, river drifting is a popular activity for groups of friends and families. As soon as the temperatures rise, everyone grabs their paddles and pumps and drifts down the river in brightly-coloured rubber boats. Unfortunately, many of these inflatable boats are abandoned on the banks, sometimes after just one use. The problem has become so serious that some towns, like Bern, have taken action by installing massive permanent containers to help maintain the shores of the Aare river. The inflatable F-BÖÖTLE, made from a tractor inner tube combined with truck tarp and safety belts, offers a sustainable alternative for this summertime water adventure. Designed to be easily inflated and deflated, it can be effortlessly rolled up into a backpack for convenient carrying. AIRtube by Translating FREITAG s bag-making expertise to the furniture industry is perhaps a bit of a stretch. Applying its radical principles to furniture rental, however, makes perfect sense. AIRTUBE is an inflatable sofa system made from dead-stock tractor inner tubes and seatbelt webbing. One section of the sofa is made up of four inner tubes constrained and shaped by straps. Each element can accommodate two people and could be easily transported from a FREITAG store to wherever you need it. AIRTUBE is a sturdy, playful and comfy option for events, parties, indoors or out on a sunny day relaxing in a park. shift by When we move from one home to another, we consume a lot of items in a short space of time — cardboard boxes, bags, all sorts of tapes, bubble wrap, etc. — most of which end up in the rubbish or, at best, in a recycling bin. SHIFT is a reusable moving kit made up of a series of sturdy, box-shaped tarp bags ranging in size from 43L, 62L and 82L, plus a long, thin bag for all bulky items. You could borrow as many bags as you need from your local FREITAG store, for a carefree move.

L'ECAL AT VISIONS DU RÉEL: MASTERCLASS & ECAL FILMS Event
L'ECAL AT VISIONS DU RÉEL: MASTERCLASS & ECAL FILMS

L ECAL AT VISIONS DU RÉEL: MASTERCLASS & ECAL FILMS,12–21.04.2024,Nyon As guest of honour at the 55th edition of the Visions du Réel festival in Nyon, filmmaker Jia Zhang-Ke will be giving a masterclass on Tuesday 16 April, organised in partnership with the Cinémathèque suisse. The programme also includes six films by the ECAL s Cinema Department and alumni. MASTERCLASS: JIA ZHANG-KE Cinéaste, Chine Moderated by Jean-Michel Frodon, film critic and journalist A leading figure in independent Chinese cinema, and contemporary cinema more broadly, Jia Zhang-Ke will be presenting a masterclass exploring his captivating and multifaceted oeuvre which examines the history of his country and the characters who inhabit it. A retrospective of his films will run throughout the festival edition. Born in 1970 in the mining region of Shanxi, bordered by the Great Wall of China, Jia Zhang-Ke is a leading light in contemporary cinema. He belongs to a generation of Chinese filmmakers who were profoundly affected by the Tiananmen Square protests. His diverse filmography, which comprises more than 20 short and feature works, borrows elements from both genre and non-fiction cinema. Switching from taught thrillers to documentaries and encompassing a myriad hybrid formats woven together by non-professional actors, fictional works on a canvas of reality, and fantasies bypassing otherwise restrained stories, Jia Zhang-Ke has spent two decades creating a filmography as coherent as it is shifting. His stylistically diverse oeuvre deploys the full range of cinematographic techniques (16 and 35mm, DV, HD, etc.). Approaching his subject as a visual artist, Jia Zhang-Ke offers a subtle and subversive immersion in Chinese society, imbued with a sublimated realism. Resisting censorship and tirelessly defending the cultural significance of his country s cinematic output, Jia Zhang-Ke weaves long-form, epic-style stories to explore personal and multifaceted journeys that challenge the notion of dissolution of the individual within the national narrative. Ever willing to wrestle with the realities of China s recent history, the filmmaker offers a profoundly humanist representation that draws on memories and recollections. To achieve this, Jia Zhang-Ke creates a narrative polysemy that focuses its gaze on the everyday lives of ordinary people living in “intermediate towns” scattered between the rural life and that of the country s burgeoning megacities. By doing so, Jia Zhang-Ke s films dissect the promises and mirages offered under the forced march of modernisation in effect since the 1960s. They examine the effects of this collective story, specifically the imposition of state capitalism on human beings, by providing a romantic and sensitive counter-narrative. An essential and uncompromising filmography that has often fallen foul of the government s strict censorship regime. An event in collaboration with the Cinémathèque suisse. Text: Visions du Réel FILMS As part of Visions du Réel, from April 12 to 21, 6 films by ECAL s Cinema Department and alumni are scheduled. Watches and Wonders Geneva 2024 ECAL x Alloyed

Watches and Wonders Geneva 2024 ECAL x Alloyed For the Watches and Wonders Geneva 2024 trade show, ECAL/University of Art and DesignLausanne has teamed up with Alloyed, a company that specialises in metal printingtechnologies, to present an original collection of watch straps. Designed by students in theMaster of Advanced Studies in Design for Luxury and Craftsmanship programme, thesewristbands have been developed using 3D modelling software, resulting in unique pieces thatgo beyond the limits of traditional techniques. Five of the 15 concepts designed by the students were selected and 3D printed from a finepowder of TI6AI4V titanium—an alloy composed of titanium, aluminium, and vanadium—whosemelting point of around 1,600° Celsius is obtained using a laser beam. Regularly used in theaerospace, and medical industries, this printing technique, known as Laser Powder BedFusion (L-PBF), can be used to create objects with ultra-high-performance mechanicalproperties. Each project, presented in the form of a prototype or animation, finds its inspiration in thebeauty of nature, through organic structures, as much as in complex systems, closer toengineering. This collaboration brings together technology, craftsmanship, and design—withlinks to the world of fine watchmaking—by combining the expertise of engineers specialising inthe science of materials, the know-how of artisan jewellers and their finishing skills, and thecreativity and innovative spirit of up-and-coming designers. CHRISTIAN MARCLAY × ECAL– PHOTOMATON Event
CHRISTIAN MARCLAY × ECAL– PHOTOMATON

CHRISTIAN MARCLAY × ECAL– PHOTOMATON,29.03–02.06.2024,Photo Elysée Artist Christian Marclay, invited to delve into the Photo Elysée collections in 2021, has explored the thousands of faces recorded by the museum s Photomaton. With him, ECAL s photography students have pored over, scanned and transformed the conserved prints. Four portraits taken by a machine and printed in a few minutes! This is the experience offered by the Photomaton since it was invented in 1924. It was an immediate success, especially with the proliferation of identity documents that require a portrait taken to specific standards. Very few people are unfamiliar with the experience of the Photomaton – the name of this photo booth installed in areas of high footfall. Automated, self-service, available 7 days a week, socially neutral, and above all less expensive than a portrait taken by a professional, and less intimidating too, this photographic process democratises the act of having a portrait taken, quickly, anywhere and at little cost. The ancestor of the Polaroid and the selfie, named after the words “photo” and “automaton”, this unmanned process, a veritable photographic automaton offering four unique prints, has often fascinated artists. A few years ago, Photo Elysée acquired an automated photo studio. Since then, the museum has been inviting members of the public to photograph themselves and, if they wish, leave their portraits to create a collective work of art. Multimedia artist Christian Marclay has explored thousands of faces recorded by the Photo Elysée Photomaton. With him, the students in the ECAL s Bachelor of Photography are making this archive their own through analogue and digital manipulations: collages, kinetic animations,  scanning electron microscope and new forms of automation based on artificial intelligence.DATESDu 29 mars au 2 juin 2024ADDRESSPhoto Elysée Pl. de la Gare 17 1003 LausanneWEBSITEwww.elysee.chSTUDENTS, , , , , , , TEACHERASSISTANTS, Angèle Marignac-Serra, OPENING28.03.2024

ECAL LECTURE – El Pampero Cine Event
ECAL LECTURE – El Pampero Cine

ECAL LECTURE – El Pampero Cine,24.01.2024,Leenaards Auditorium, ECAL More than just a production company, El Pampero Cine was born in 2002 from the desire of a group of people to experiment and renew the procedures and practices of Argentine cinema. In conference at the ECAL, Wednesday 13 October 2024 at 6.00pm. Part of the formidable revival known as the "New Argentine Cinema", the collective produced  films of international renown, such as La Flor (2018), Castro (2009) and Trenque Lauquen (2022), always with a radical economic approach. El Pampero Cine s influence is not confined to aesthetics: its revolution affects above all forms of production and exhibition. Since Balnearios, in 2002, El Pampero Cine has developed a production system based on radical independence from conventional funding sources, which has enabled them to produce consistently fertile output. Historias Extraordinarias confirms that El Pampero Cine has imposed a new way of producing in Argentina, working with budgets that are significantly lower than the smallest industrial productions, without this inferiority of conditions having anything to do with the technical or aesthetic quality of the works. El Pampero Cine is made up of Mariano Llinás, Laura Citarella, Agustín Mendilaharzu and Alejo Moguilansky, Argentine directors, editors, writers and producers. DATES & SCHEDULE24.01.2024 6:00pm Free entryVENUELeenaards Auditorium, ECALINFORMATIONIn the presence of Alejo Moguillansky & Mariano Llinás, Argentine filmmakers co-founders of El Pampero Cine Moderated by Andreas Fontana, director WEBSITEelpamperocine.com.ar

ECAL X BELLE RIVIERA Project
ECAL X BELLE RIVIERA

ECAL X BELLE RIVIERA For the member municipalities of GEDERIVIERA, the waste management perimeter of the Vaudois Riviera, students in the BA Industrial Design are envisioning a new public trash can. GEDERIVIERA is the waste management authority for the Swiss Riviera. Its principal mission is to study and propose projects to harmonise waste management in the member municipalities. In 2021, GEDERIVIERA initiated the creation of a brand new public trash can in collaboration with ECAL to bring harmony and freshness to the streets of the Riviera.MODULA by Julie Meyer, Jade Eyman Modula is a waste bin with a flexible design. Its ingenious perforations allow various modules to be attached, such as an ashtray, a notice board, a container for doggy bags and a lid. These modules can be easily moved, added to or removed from the bin. In addition, several Modula bins can be connected to increase their capacity or facilitate selective sorting. This modular approach leaves plenty of space for creativity and new, innovative modular designs from the Riviera.Casquette par Aramis Rüdisühli, Léo Crespin The "Casquette" bin, as its name suggests, is a nod to the fashion accessory, and adds a touch of elegance to a rubbish bin. This gives it its own distinctive identity and visibility in the Riviera landscape. Casquette has been developed using simple production methods to minimise costs and simplify the manufacturing process.GYRE par Aleksandra Nazarova, Mattia Cook Gyre is an elegant and functional waste bin, thanks to its design with a double sided opening that gives it a discreet yet striking shape. Equipped with an easy-to-handle hoop, removable ashtrays and a 180° opening, the ergonomics of this litter bin have been designed to simplify its use by public service employees. The students pooled their creative skills to imagine a distinctive trash can that would exhibit character while meeting standards of functionality and quality. After several months of fruitful exchanges with GEDERIVIERA, ECAL presented three innovative trash can projects, boasting a harmonious design specially crafted to seamlessly integrate into public spaces and thus meet the expectations of citizens.

Three ECAL graduates in artist residencies abroad Article
Three ECAL graduates in artist residencies abroad

Three ECAL graduates in artist residencies abroad Romane de Watteville, Gina Proenza and Baker Wardlaw, three ECAL graduates, have been awarded three Artist Residencies abroad by the Etat de Vaud The State of Vaud provides professional artists working in the canton with a studio in Paris and another in Berlin. Put out to tender each year, the artistic residencies are granted for a period of six months, and each comes with a contribution to expenses of 9,000 francs. For 2024, the Paris studio has been awarded to visual artists Romane de Watteville (1st semester) and Gina Proenza (2nd semester). The Berlin residency (2nd semester) goes to Baker Wardlaw. International artist residencies are an important means of supporting creativity and research. They encourage the development of projects with links to the two capitals concerned, and promote the influence of artists working in Vaud. To this end, the Canton of Vaud has a studio at the Cité internationale des arts in Paris, and (in collaboration with the Canton of Freiburg) a studio in the multicultural Wedding district in the heart of Berlin. Residence in Paris 1st semester 2024 - Graduated with a Bachelor s degree in Fine Arts in 2020, Romane de Watteville wishes to reside in the French capital to develop a pictorial project entitled "Picture of You Staring". Focusing on formal issues, this work is centered around the theme of set design in both theater and film, as well as costume design. The residency will foster exchange and close collaboration with other artists working in textiles, ceramics and installation. 2nd semester 2024 - During her stay in Paris, Gina Proenza, graduated with a Bachelor s degree in Fine Arts in 2017, will develop a project linked to the writings and documentary films (one of which is unfinished) produced by French poet Alain Gheerbrant following his travels in the Colombian Amazon during the second half of the 20th century. The artist plans to consult the archives of these journeys held at the Bibliothèque Nationale de France (BNF) to observe the relationship between colonial history and anthropology. Residence in Berlin 2nd semester 2024 - During his stay in Berlin, Baker Wardlaw, graduated with a Bachelor s degree in Fine Arts in 2014, will continue the conceptual and formal exploration of his work entitled "Berlin Key / Sacred Harp". Centered on the notions of cryptography and cooperation, the artist s approach aims to establish a parallel, or even a confrontation, between the messages sometimes cryptically conveyed by works of art and the complex digital encasement to which all human communication is almost necessarily subject these days. www.vd.ch
