David Scarnà – Total For my diploma, I have worked on a font family of six modular monotype typefaces. The family includes three styles (square based, condensed and extended) which all have two contrasts (classical and reverse). Intrigued by the monotype specificities, I have set myself drawing constraints to amplify them and create letters on a perfectly joinable sub-base. Eloïse Rossetti – I Would Definitely Come Back I Would Definitely Come Back is an atlas which collects five extraordinary destinations, all selected from Airbnb. These places with unusual features have been found by applying specific filters to the search such as shampoo , doorman or luxury . This work questions the influence of the Internet on the concepts of tourism, spatiality, travelling, and the perception of all this through virtuality. The atlas is a mix between my imagination and the results from Google. Each location is a collection of images reworked and arranged so as to give the reader the feeling of a visual journey. Joana Francisca Castro Santos – Be Ready – To save a life BE READY is an iPad app that connects the 144 hotline, the ambulances, the SMUR medical emergency service and the hospital where the victim will be brought. The aim of this interface with its simple design is to optimize the time at each phase of the medical emergency, based on an existing protocol in Switzerland. This project allowed me to combine my passions for graphic design and medicine. I was able to participate in rescue missions and also to expand my knowledge in interactive design. My motivation is to use graphic design to help develop another area. Océan Bussard – NIFFF Feature Presentation NIFFF Feature Presentation is a series of animated posters promoting the NIFFF (Neuchâtel International Fantastic Film Festival). Halfway between a poster and a video, this project reinterprets the codes of fantasy cinema with tools related to graphic design. Horror, gore and the intriguing are the themes covered in this hybrid work between cinema and graphics. This project allowed me to expand my practice of graphic design closer to the work of a film-maker by planning sequences with storyboards, experimenting with video editing – all of that through the prism of graphic design. The Most Beautiful Swiss Books: many awards for ECAL graduates Ce jeudi 25 juin dès 18h au Helmhaus à Zurich, vernissage de l exposition «Les plus beaux livres suisses» avec la présence parmi les 17 livres primés de 12 ouvrages réalisés par des personnalités en lien avec l ECAL 11 diplômés (aussi professeurs à l ECAL pour certains) du Bachelor Design Graphique ont été récompensés: Nicolas Eigenheer + Vera Kaspar, Teo Schifferli 2x, David Keshavjee + Guy Meldem, Marie Lusa, Gavillet & Rust + Vincent Devaud, Marietta Eugster, Rober Huber. Ainsi que trois intervenants: Laurenz Brunner 2x, Lex Trüb et Jonathan Hares. Ce dernier a également remporté la médaille d or au «Best Book Design from all over the World», où Paul Elliman, intervenant à l ECAL, est reparti avec la «Goldene Letter» (plus haute distinction). Sheep Mowers of Metis Reford Gardens and ECAL collaborated on bringing to Québec 25 students from Bachelor Industrial Design, with the support of the "Summer University" program of the Canton of Vaud. This project was conceived and built by 2nd year students in the Bachelor Industrial Design from ECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne, Switzerland, overseen by the Swiss designer Adrien Rovero, on the occasion of a one week workshop at Reford Gardens. "Life is a Bed of Roses (un roman)" exhibition,26.05–04.07.2015,Fondation Ricard, Paris Une exposition de l ECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne et de la Fondation d entreprise Ricard, Paris. «Life is a Bed of Roses (un roman)» – Exposition jusqu au 4 juillet 2015 – L Ecole de Stéphanie du 2 au 4 juillet 2015 Ce projet a été conçu par Stéphanie Moisdon, avec la participation des étudiants et des enseignants du Master Arts Visuels de l ECAL. Sous la forme d un roman d éducation de l imagination ou d imagination de l éducation, l exposition est le lieu d un théâtre et d un chœur, d un décor, d apparitions de formes, d objets et de personnages. Le cheminement évolutif de ce roman d apprentissage s est progressivement formé, durant toute une année, autour d un film d Alain Resnais, du souvenir déplié du château du Comte Forbek, dans l esprit des temps médiévaux, celui des artisans de tous temps. Pour écrire à plusieurs ce conte léger et moderne de la jeunesse, il aura fallu s appuyer sur quelques stratégies obliques, circuler entre l expérience et l immaturité, le talent et le métier, entre les prédispositions personnelles et l idéal collectif. Ce travail en «ateliers» a été conduit par Valentin Carron, Sylvie Fleury, Tristan Garcia, Stéphane Kropf, Fabian Marti, en collaboration avec Lucile Dupraz. La scénographie a été réalisée par Denis Savary avec Ruben Valdez et le générique par Lisa Stein. Avec: Jérôme Baccaglio, Tina Braegger, Lena Brudieux, Francesco Cagnin, Lucas Erin, Jean Etchevers-Bourgois, Arthur Fouray, Antoine Goudard, Thea Govorchin, Julien Gremaud, Emanuele Marcuccio, Francesco Nardozzi, Giulio Scalisi, Tomaso Semenzato, Konstantinos Sotiriou, Lisa Stein, Linda Voorwinde. L Ecole de Stéphanie L exposition accueille durant trois jours la 6ème édition de «L Ecole de Stéphanie», qui se déroule dans un espace modélisé à partir des fonctions minimales d une salle de classe. Son image a été pensée par Pierre Joseph, qui la définit ainsi: «L espace intègre une série de douze photographies de vitraux, une moquette bleue, une table de conférence, un équipement audio-visuel, et des sièges en nombre suffisant. L ensemble pourrait évoquer d emblée une salle de classe de l enseignement catholique mais ce n est pas ici véritablement l enjeu. La série d images, prise sans vocation documentaire, ni cadrage exigeant, nous renvoie davantage du côté du mitraillage photographique et touristique que vers une lecture savante de l iconographie religieuse. Malgré cela, fruit du hasard et de différents paramètres, dont l ensoleillement de la cathédrale Notre-Dame, où ont été prises ces photos, ce jour-là, de la distance objectif/sujet, de la focale et de l exposition, une seule scène de vitraux aura été choisie. Il s agit d un motif fréquent de l art chrétien, l arbre de Jessé, dans une version restaurée de Viollet-le-Duc. On pourra donc y voir et y lire, une allusion parcellaire à la généalogie de Jésus et donc à l histoire et la transmission au sens large. L arrière-plan de chacun des personnages de ces vitraux étant bleu comme l est la moquette qui emplit l espace de la classe, le dispositif inclut malgré lui le visiteur ou l élève dans cette «histoire» Ces images sérielles n en sont pas moins tout à fait décoratives et joueront de cette manière et sur ce registre avec le reste de l exposition.» Le prototype de «L Ecole de Stéphanie» n est ni une fiction ni une parodie, mais le pilote d une école, une situation amenée à se déplacer et à se renouveler, comme c est le cas depuis sa création en 2006 pour «La force de l art», triennale d art contemporain à Paris. «L Ecole de Stéphanie» est un espace de projection, de travail, de transmission et de mutualisation des savoirs. Une petite école temporaire où les questions d image, de représentation et de langage circulent librement. Un lieu émancipé des règles et de l autorité, des classements et des disciplines, qui fonctionne hors programme et sans manuel. Sur toute la durée de la manifestation, des «maîtres» et «maîtresses» interviennent selon un rythme intensif. Ils ne cherchent pas à régner, ils s inventent des filiations et des trajectoires personnelles, des méthodes et des outils de pédagogie. Ils enseignent, le temps d une classe, une leçon de choses, une leçon de mots. ECAL exhibition at Montreal,22.05–11.10.2015,Montreal For its 53rd season, the Reford Gardens (Les Jardins de Métis) present ‟Lambmowers”, a series of installations at once practical and amusing. These agricultural accessories will enhance the well-being of the sheep who will mow the lawns previously maintained by a fleet of lawnmowers and Reford Gardens staff. Exhibition from May 23 until October 11, 2015. This project was conceived and built on site by 2nd year students in the Bachelor Industrial Design from ECAL. ECAL-Typefaces.ch,30.04.2015,Harpe 45, Lausanne ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne launches an online foundry in association with Swiss Typefaces, allowing to acquire fonts realized by the students in Bachelor Graphic Design and in Master Art Direction. A premiere for a school! www.ecal-typefaces.ch With this website created in collaboration with Swiss Typefaces, ECAL is probably the first university in the world to have launched an online type foundry, allowing direct access for anyone to a selection of typefaces, all designed by students. Thanks to renowned professors such as François Rappo, Aurèle Sack, Ian Party, Gilles Gavillet and Ludovic Balland, and prestigious visiting lecturers such as Frederik Berlaen, Kai Bernau, Peter Bilak, Laurenz Brunner, Christian Schwartz, Paul Barnes and Emmanuel Rey, ECAL has been able to boast a solid reputation in Type Design teaching for several years. Fonts designed by students during the Bachelor Graphic Design and Master Art Direction courses (or for the diploma) are regularly used for ECAL corporate communications (posters, invitations cards, catalogues...), and because of this usage, people often ask to us how to acquire these typefaces, in particular our Headline Fonts. This website is here to answer those requests. ECAL is proud to be able to share these fonts with the largest possible audience and to offer a platform for our students, deserving heirs of a typically Swiss know-how.

Collaboration with Vacheron Constantin Vacheron Constantin presents the “Arts & Crafts & Design: Time according to ECAL and Swiss Craftsmen”, an exhibition produced in partnership with ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne and the Fondazione Cologni dei Mestieri d Arte for the Swiss Pavilion at the Milan Expo (May 1st – October 31st 2015), and presented as a preview during the Salone del Mobile at the Museo Bagatti Valsecchi in Milan. This original approach links contemporary creation to several time-honoured know-hows. Within the framework of this project, Vacheron Constantin has asked 12 students from the Master of Advanced Studies in Design for Luxury & Craftsmanship of ECAL to combine their creativity with that of experienced craftsmen in order to produce unique objects and demonstrate the richness, the variety, as well as the relevance to contemporary creation of these artisanal crafts. Under the leadership of Andrea Trimarchi and Simone Farresin (Studio Formafantasma) these 12 “duos” have worked on the same theme, Time, and more precisely on the cyclical time of the seasons, using materials as diverse as paper, stone, glass or carbon.
ECAL Milano 2015: #ECAL #PhotoBooth,14–19.04.2015,Spazio Orso 16, Milan On the occasion of the Milan International Furniture Fair 2015, from 14th to 19th April, the ECAL/University of Art And Design Lausanne presents “#ECAL #PhotoBooth”. The ECAL students of the Bachelor Photography and Master Product Design present a series of interactive installations showing how mobile phone cameras and the selfie phenomenon changed the way we look at ourselves. Images HD Video Catalogue/Cards Press release How can one create objects and installations around the portrait theme in this digital age? What means are available to disseminate these? How can one make visitors interact with the exhibits and turn viewers into the main actors in the exhibition? Over a semester, 1st year Master Product Design students and 2ndyear Bachelor Photography students from ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne worked on these issues with the aim to present their findings as part of an exhibition. Under the watchful eye of Vincent Jacquier, Head of the Visual Communication Department, of designer Camille Blin and photographer Nicolas Haeni, the students were able to understand, using various approaches, how current – material or virtual – technology alters our traditional relationship with portraits, be they selfies or pictures of others. Using modern media as well as more run-of-the-mill devices, exhibition visitors are invited to directly experiment the processes imagined by the students, allowing them to discover new interactive and fun ways of having their picture taken 3.0 style. Based on this principle, the exhibition stages an installation playing with the visitor s shadow; the combination of a mirror and scanner to create realistic or distorted self-portraits; an image which is altered through song; a tribute to famous departed designers through a system of filters placed in front of a smartphone; analogically merged faces; a 180° portrait produced by a range of reflective surfaces; a trompe-l oeil projection on a mask; a family of objects able to hijack the smartphone camera function to create original images; a poetic reinterpretation Instagram; and finally, self-portraits captured by the photo itself. #Photobooth The ECAL students of the Bachelor Photography and Master Product Design present a series of interactive installations showing how mobile phone cameras and the selfie phenomenon changed the way we look at ourselves. How can one create objects and installations around the portrait theme in this digital age? What means are available to disseminate these? How can one make visitors interact with the exhibits and turn viewers into the main actors in the exhibition? Over a semester, 1st year Master Product Design students and 2nd year Bachelor Photography students from ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne worked on these issues with the aim to present their findings as part of an exhibition. Under the watchful eye of Vincent Jacquier, Head of the Visual Communication Department, of designer Camille Blin and photographer Nicolas Haeni, the students were able to understand, using various approaches, how current – material or virtual – technology alters our traditional relationship with portraits, be they selfies or pictures of others. Using modern media as well as more run-of-the-mill devices, exhibition visitors are invited to directly experiment the processes imagined by the students, allowing them to discover new interactive and fun ways of having their picture taken 3.0 style. Based on this principle, the exhibition stages an installation playing with the visitor s shadow; the combination of a mirror and scanner to create realistic or distorted self-portraits; an image which is altered through song; a tribute to famous departed designers through a system of filters placed in front of a smartphone; analogically merged faces; a 180° portrait produced by a range of reflective surfaces; a trompe-l œil projection on a mask; a family of objects able to hijack the smartphone camera function to create original images; a poetic reinterpretation Instagram; and finally, self-portraits captured by the photo itself. Découvrez Renens autrement par le biais d images originales présentées dans le cadre d une exposition et d un livre qui accompagne l événement. Images HD C est une question de temps. Une photographie se prend en une fraction de seconde, en un instant. Une ville se modifie, elle se transforme et pour qu elle se définisse en une nouvelle image, ça peut prendre des années, des décennies, des siècles. Sous l impulsion de Marianne Huguenin, syndique de Renens, et de Milo Keller, responsable du Bachelor Photographie, un projet de collaboration entre la municipalité et l ECAL, sise au cœur de la ville, est né. Pendant une année, le photographe suisse Nicolas Faure a travaillé avec 15 étudiants de 3e année dans le périmètre de Renens. Ils ont abordé des thématiques variées: de l enquête documentaire sur la communauté africaine, en passant par les adolescents dans les écoles ou à la piscine communale, jusqu à la vie standardisée des bureaux ou à l intimité d appartements de retraités. ECAL enters at the Victoria & Albert Museum,07.10–06.11.2014,Victoria & Albert Museum, London Two projects from the "Delirious Home" exhibition, presented at the Milan International Furniture Fair 2014 and awarded with the Milano Design Award for the Best Show, newly acquired by the Victoria & Albert Museum (V&A) for its collection in London. These two pieces ("Ostinati" and "Broken Mirror"), created by students of Bachelor Industrial Design and Bachelor Media & Interaction Design under the supervision of Alain Bellet and Chris Kabel, are presented by the Design Fund (the programme in charge of acquisitions by the museum) at the V&A until November 6, 2014. An abandoned, neglected past; yet Belgium has a colonial past indeed. It is the history of King Leopold II, but it is also my history. The intertwinement of my family memoirs and the history of Belgium in this film allows creating a new stage for my investigative work on the Belgian Congo with the aim to understand and making people understand what happened 100 years ago. * Belgium needs a colony: inscription on a marble plate sent from Greece to the Minister of Finance by Leopold II even before his accession to the throne. Exhibition Gavillet & Rust,25.09–11.10.2014,Gallery l elac, Renens Du 26 septembre au 11 octobre 2014 à la Galerie l elac à Renens, l ECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne présente une exposition conçue et réalisée par Gavillet & Rust avec Vincent Devaud à partir de la collection du FRAC Champagne-Ardenne (France). Images HD «A l invitation du FRAC Champagne-Ardenne, le studio de design graphique Gavillet & Rust, responsable depuis 2008 de l identité graphique du FRAC, a conçu un dispositif inédit de présentation de sa collection. «Quel regard porter sur une collection? Selon quel axe l aborder? Thématique? Chronologique? Les possibilités sont nombreuses, et chacune d elles raconte une histoire particulière. Les membres du studio de design graphique Gavillet & Rust, invités à écrire leur propre récit, ont abordé la question d une manière assez singulière, en appliquant à la collection les codes et systèmes qu ils manient dans leur pratique quotidienne du graphisme. Ainsi, plutôt que de s atteler à un display «classique» d œuvres, c est à la représentation de celles-ci qu ils se sont intéressés. Un parti pris qui fait notamment écho au célèbre «Ceci n est pas une pipe» de Magritte. Une vingtaine de visuels ont été sélectionnés, permettant de multiples combinaisons possibles via un étonnant jeu d impressions et de surimpressions en sérigraphie. Aucune irrévérence dans cet exercice, plutôt un plaisir certain à s emparer d images au «potentiel graphique» indéniable, à les superposer, les confronter, les recadrer, voire les manipuler. La proposition de Gavillet & Rust mêle par ailleurs deux approches a priori radicalement antinomiques que sont le temps de l exposition et celui de la communication visuelle. Le premier laisse la possibilité de se familiariser à l œuvre, de l appréhender dans un contexte spécifique, pensé pour lui rendre justice au mieux. Le second, en revanche, nécessite un impact immédiat, afin de marquer les esprits dans un environnement surchargé de signes. Les graphistes sont ici parvenus à trouver un rare équilibre entre ces deux temporalités. Si les affiches éditées – d un format de 120 x 176 cm, fidèle au placard urbain à la française – sont efficaces et immédiatement séduisantes, elles restent toutefois énigmatiques, demandant un second temps de lecture pour se dévoiler dans leur entièreté. Et les questions d affleurer: quel rapport entre le portrait des deux trublions britanniques Gilbert & George réalisé par Gérard Rondeau et les peintures pop de Michel Majerus? Comment la Joconde de Filliou dialogue-t-elle avec les expérimentations photographiques de James Welling? Les clichés de Robert Adams peuvent-ils s accommoder des appropriations de Raymond Hains? ECAL at the Vevey Festival Images,13.09–05.10.2014,Festival Images, Vevey Jusqu au 5 octobre 2014 au Festival Images à Vevey (Quai Maria-Belgia – Quai de la Veveyse), l ECAL présente le projet «Snowpark» de Philippe Fragnière, diplômé du Bachelor Photographie en 2012. Outre les images de l artiste valaisan, la sc énographie a été réalisée par trois étudiants du Bachelor Design Industriel (Iris Andreadis, Anna Heck, Wenxin Ng). Dans le cadre de cette exposition, le Festival Images, l ECAL et Kodoji Press coéditent une publication faisant partie intégrante de ce travail (disponible à la Librairie du Festival sur la place du Marché). Trois autres étudiants du Bachelor Design Industriel (Megan Elisabeth Dinius, Raphaël de Kalbermatten et Léonard Golay) ont également créé directement sur le Lac Léman la scénographie du photographe japonais Yuji Hamada. Philippe Fragnière est né en 1987 dans les Alpes valaisannes en Suisse. En 2008, il entre à l ECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne où il obtient en 2012 son Bachelor en Photographie. Pour son travail de fin d études, il retourne avec une approche artistique auxsnowparks de son adolescence. L artiste valaisan a parcouru ces rendez-vous sportifs et mis en évidence la relation esthétique existant entre ces aménagements et le paysage alpin à la manière de certaines installations de land art. A partir de leurs différents témoignages, Rimini Protokoll a construit le scénario digne d un jeu vidéo à échelle humaine. Equipés d un casque et d une tablette numérique, vingt spectateurs se glissent dans la peau des protagonistes et déambulent à travers des espaces scénographiés. Tantôt victimes, tantôt bourreaux, les spectateurs se livrent à un jeu de rôles et découvrent les dessous de la mondialisation de l industrie de l armement. Situation Rooms vient de recevoir le prix d Excellence dans la catégorie Art du 17e Japan Media Arts Festival et fait partie de la sélection 2014 du festival Theatertreffen de Berlin. 2014-2015 posters of the Lausanne Opera realized by ECAL Suite à un concours, les affiches de la saison 2014-2015 de l Opéra de Lausanne ont été réalisées par trois étudiants (Benoît Jeannet, Tancrède Ottiger, David Scarnà) de 2e année du Bachelor Photographie et du Bachelor Design Graphique de l ECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne. La première affiche (d une série de sept) est à découvrir dès le 10 septembre 2014 en ville de Lausanne Vincent Jacquier, responsable du Département Communication Visuelle de l ECAL, explique le déroulement du concours d affiches organisé à l ECAL «L ECAL fonctionne un peu comme un opéra. Un lieu propice à la création, où divers savoir-faire se rencontrent. Ainsi, à l instar de cet art où orchestre, choeur et ballet s associent pour magnifier une oeuvre, l ECAL a pour habitude d allier différentes disciplines pour travailler sur un projet. Cette transversalité s est donc exprimée naturellement sur le concours d affiches pour la saison 2014-2015 de l Opéra de Lausanne, organisé au sein même de l ECAL. Initiée par l Opéra de Lausanne, cette opportunité de créer des synergies entre nos deux institutions sonnait juste. Une évidence également pour notre directeur Alexis Georgacopoulos! Nous avons donc très rapidement décidé de réunir des étudiants de 2e année du Bachelor en Photographie et de celui en Design Graphique, avec pour objectif de former des petits ensembles aux talents divers, mais complémentaires. Le ton, en mode majeur bien sûr, était donné: quarante étudiants, huit opéras et quelques mois pour présenter les résultats au jury. Pour développer ce travail et ne pas perdre la dimension pédagogique, nous avons demandé à deux jeunes professeurs prometteurs d être nos chefs d orchestre: Philippe Jarrigeon (Paris) et Jonas Wandeler (Zurich). Ces deux ténors de la photographie et du graphisme ont ainsi suivi les étudiants sans intermède lors d un workshop préliminaire d une semaine, puis staccato durant tout le semestre académique, pour finir bien évidemment fortissimo! Début 2014, lors de la présentation au jury, j ai été très fier en découvrant la totalité des projets. Les étudiants ont prouvé que produire des visuels pour une institution culturelle telle que l Opéra leur permettait d exprimer une grande partie de leur créativité et de leur sensibilité. Souvent avec poésie et humour. Leur imaginaire s immisçant parfaitement dans cet univers où musique rime souvent avec magique, mais aussi avec technique(s). J ai hâte que le grand public découvre la série d affiches gagnante. Avec son identité claire et son style graphique plutôt moderne, elle devrait séduire un public jeune peu coutumier du genre, tout en parlant aux habitués grâce à ses images référencées. Collaboration ECAL/Hermès (vitrines for the Hermès Geneva and Zurich stores),02.09–02.11.2014,Stores Hermès Geneva and Zurich Suite à une collaboration avec Hermès (Suisse), les étudiants du Master of Advanced Studies in Design for Luxury and Craftsmanship de l ECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne ont développé des projets de vitrines pour les magasins genevois et zurichois d Hermès (à découvrir in situ jusqu au mois de novembre). Sous la supervision de la designer londonienne Bethan Laura Wood, professeur à l ECAL et de Nicolas Le Moigne, responsable du programme, le workshop avait pour but de réaliser plusieurs vitrines en créant différentes compositions sur le thème annuel « Métamorphose », tout en respectant les codes et l univers propres à Hermès. Le jury composé de 3 responsables de la communication d Hermès a été séduit par le projet Sketches of Animals, de l étudiant chinois Hongchao Wang. Ce projet est une collection de structures et de supports en bois mettant en valeur les accessoires présentés en vitrines en les utilisant pour animer les différentes formes, telle une métamorphose des objets en animaux. Une assiette imprimée devient ainsi l œil d un poisson, des coussins deviennent ses écailles et un verre en cristal l extrémité de son antenne. Alliant simplicité et poésie, cette idée a été déclinée sur l ensemble des vitrines des magasins de Genève et de Zurich, créant ainsi différentes compositions à chaque fois ludiques et artistiques. Artist residency in Mexico City for three students of the Master in Fine Arts Lors de la cérémonie des diplômes Bachelor et Master qui aura lieu fin juin, l ECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne remettra à trois étudiants de 1re et 2e années du Master Arts Visuels les «clés» d une résidence d artistes à Mexico City. Pendant deux mois cet été, Julien Berberat (né en 1988 à Delémont), Julien Gremaud (né en 1984 à Morges) et Emanuele Marcuccio (né en 1987 à Schio, Italie) participeront ainsi à SOMA Summer, un programme de workshops et de visites au coeur de la capitale mexicaine SOMA est un espace d art contemporain qui vise à s imposer comme un contrepoint dynamique aux écoles, musées et galeries du Mexique. Il est né à l initiative d un groupe d artistes mexicains qui, en s appuyant sur les expériences des précédentes espaces d art, comme La Panadería et Temístoclés 44, ont uni leurs forces pour créer une plateforme unique au sein de la scène culturelle. La mission de SOMA est d encourager le dialogue, la collaboration et même la confrontation entre artistes et producteurs culturels de différents horizons et générations. ECAL at the Nuit des Images,28.06.2014,Musée de l Elysée Night Less with ECAL (de 15h => 22h) – Un parcours hallucinatoire dans un univers tropical révèle la richesse du biotope. De la photographie pure à l image en mouvement, en passant par des projections lumineuses et des créations sonores, les étudiants de l ECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne se sont risqués à sortir des sentiers battus. C est dans une jungle luxuriante truffée d installations inattendues que le spectateur doit s aventurer pour découvrir les réalisations des étudiants de deuxième année de Bachelor en Photographie à l ECAL, imaginées lors d un workshop dirigé par Nicolas Haeni (photographe, Genève). Les fruits de leurs recherches seront habilement valorisés par Camille Blin, designer, co-fondateur du bureau ACE et professeur à l ECAL, en charge de la scénographie de cette installation. Project by ECAL for Vacheron Constantin presented in Asia,11.06–15.08.2014,Taipei, Seoul, Shanghai, Nanjing Vacheron Constantin will present the project "The Minute Repeater" by ECAL /University of Art & Design Lausanne during this summer in various Asian cities (Taipei, Seoul, Shanghai, Nanjing ...). On the occasion of the 24th edition of the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH), which took place at Geneva in January 2014, the ECAL created, for watchmaker Vacheron Constantin, this special installation, result of a research work directed at ECAL by Vincent Jacquier, Head of Visual Communication Department, and Alain Bellet, Head of Bachelor Media & Interaction Design. This research, which brings together students from both Bachelor in Media & Interaction Design and Industrial Design, permitted to develop a stand for the watchmaker based in Geneva. Not less than 12 screens reveal the oneiric sense of the Calibre 1731 of Vacheron Constantin. Thank to the animations unveiled on each screen by the magic of magnifying glasses, ECAL proposes its interpretation of this minute repeater movement, known to be the flattest on the market. Collaboration with Vacheron Constantin A five-days programme conceived of workshop introductions, factory visits and brainstorming at Vacheron Constantin in order to present the brand s key values to the students. Eclipse Rachel Suming As the hands of a clock can have stressful connotations, I imagined a clock which would only show the passing of time with its frame. Deconstructed into three motorised elements turning on the same rhythm, the clock is a constantly evolving shape. After an introduction to the watchmaking world at Vacheron Constantin, I turned to the guillochage technique for my project. Making videos, graphic research, and playing with watch movements were all part of my design process when developing this project. Whyte Jake Adam Moore When visiting Vacheron Constantin s manufacture I was most struck by the beauty of mechanical principles. This was something I intended to push further by exploring simple mechanics utilised by other industries and bringing them into the watchmaking world. Inspired by the workings of Locomotive wheels, this project aims to break the traditional graphic associated with the clock face. Replacing the conventional watch hands with one hand which connects both hours and minutes, the result is an ever changing and seemingly random composition. Gong Repeater Jordi Pla The concept of Gong Repeater is directly inspired from the mechanical techniques found in "Haute Horlogerie", which I discovered at Vacheron Constantin, in particular the fascinating relationship between time and sound as heard in their minute repeaters. For centuries the gong has been a way to communicate time passing and so I was keen to creating a device which would indicate time through sound. In order to give a unique and mystic dimension and transmit ancestral values, I have chosen to work with a brass bowl from Tibet. Used for prayers, this object is the heart of my project. The contrast between this old gong and my contemporary clock illustrate the mechanical principal of the minute repeater watch from Vacheron Constantin. When a hand passes the sensor, the clock rings hours, quarters and minutes. L univers infiniment petit Samuel Williams This project is inspired by the infinitely small world of Vacheron Constantin and by a tool that is indispensable to Master Watchmakers, allowing them to penetrate the heart of the world s smallest and most complicated mechanisms. This is the watchmaker s magnifying glass. This perpetual calendar invites us to discover time on the scale of the Watchmakers, with the aim of borrowing their gestures and tools and looking at a new illustration of the passing of time.
La Foncière et l ECAL présentent un livre et les résultats d un concours,19.05.2014,Auditorium Leenaards, ECAL En septembre 2013, La Foncière, Fonds de placements immobiliers de droit suisse, et l ECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne ont initié un concours photographique et la réalisation d un livre conjoint. Jeudi 15 mai 2014 à l ECAL, les fruits de cette collaboration ont révélé toutes leurs saveurs grâce à la remise de quatre prix à des étudiants du Bachelor Photographie, ainsi que par la publication d un ouvrage photographique de 130 pages intitulé «L œil et la pierre». «Pour célébrer notre 60e anniversaire, il nous paraissait intéressant de donner la parole à des étudiants en photographie d une école d art renommée, et de leur offrir l opportunité de poser un regard frais et novateur sur le parc immobilier de La Foncière. Nous avons alors contacté l ECAL et son directeur Alexis Georgacopoulos au début de l été 2013, afin de proposer un véritable partenariat qu ils ont accepté de manière très spontanée», explique Arnaud de Jamblinne, Directeur général de La Foncière. Dès lors, cette collaboration s est orientée vers deux axes forts: la mise en place d un concours et la réalisation d un ouvrage conjoint, tous deux organisés avec les étudiants de 3e année du Bachelor Photographie. Pour le professeur en charge de ce double projet, Nicolas Faure: «l énoncé était particulièrement clair: une carte blanche à tous les élèves pour traiter 200 objets. La seule contrainte était de scénariser un ou des immeubles du parc immobilier de La Foncière dans leurs travaux. Chacun devait apporter son regard, sa culture, ses ressentis, ses envies, sa vision, son savoir-faire pour représenter ces immeubles insérés au cœur du tissu urbain de la Suisse romande.» Les seize étudiants ont travaillé pendant quatre mois, de septembre 2013 à janvier 2014, produisant ainsi de nombreuses images soumises à un jury au début de l année. Ce jury comprenait Sam Stourdzé, directeur du Musée de l Elysée à Lausanne, Luc Debraine, responsable de la rubrique Culture au journal L Hebdo et Arnaud de Jamblinne, directeur général de La Foncière. Vincent Jacquier, responsable de la Communication Visuelle à l ECAL, et Milo Keller, responsable du Bachelor Photographie, ont accompagné le déroulement des travaux du jury en qualité d observateurs. Consécration de l ECAL lors du palmarès des «Plus beaux livres suisses 2013» Le palmarès du concours des «Plus beaux livres suisses» organisé par l Office fédéral de la culture (OFC) est une véritable consécration pour le Bachelor Design Graphique et le Master Art Direction de l ECAL, puisque onze professeurs et neuf diplômés de l ECAL ont été primés. Deux livres réalisés par l ECAL ont également été récompensés: «Atrocity Exhibition Archive Paradoxe: Déambulations dans La Foire aux atrocités» et «30 Years of Swiss Typographic Discourse in the Typografische Monatsblätter. Pendant le semestre d hiver 2013, les étudiants de Laurence Bonvin, photographe suisse de renom et enseignante à l ECAL depuis 2002, ont eu pour mission d interroger la notion d image touristique sur le territoire helvétique, du Cervin au jet d eau de Genève en passant par les Alpes et Lavaux. Les mises en forme codifiées et analogiques de ces images (cartes postales, albums, dépliants,…) ont été placées au cœur de la réflexion. Au terme de ce travail, deux lauréats ont été primés et se sont vus attribuer, pendant la durée de l exposition do you speak touriste, deux salles du musée pour la présentation de leur projet photographique. Une sélection d autres projets occupe une troisième salle. Le jury Le jury était composé de Delphine Rivier, directrice du Musée d art de Pully, Milo Keller, responsable du Bachelor Photographie de l ECAL, Sébastien Leseigneur, commissaire associé du Centre de la Photographie de Genève et Pauline Martin, historienne de l art et commissaire de la Nuit des images au Musée de l Elysée. Collaboration with Rémy Martin Under the supervision of designer Tomas Kral, the students worked on the theme of mixology (the association of materials, just like the mixed ingredients that make up a cocktail) and developed in a few weeks various projects, focused either on objects related to a recipe or on ritual. For the launch of this project with Rémy Martin, we had the chance to spend two days in Cognac to discover the secrets of the production process and the cellars of the House, through numerous tastings, and then to immerse ourselves in the trendy Parisian world of cocktail bars by testing numerous recipes. In the end, 10 objects were designed by the 10 students from the programme. Nomad Rachel Suming My project is inspired by the street vendors that can be found all over the world. The current gastronomic trend is towards foodtrucks and street food revisited. Applied to the Rémy Martin universe, I imagined a tray in the house colours, which would invite a mobile, younger and more contemporary approach to cognac. The idea of "mix" is found in the use of the object which allows the preparation of a VSOP cognac cocktail prepared in front of you and at the minute. But it also lies in the mix of the house s identity codes with a more contemporary use: the oak and copper tray, echoing the cognac cask in the Rémy Martin cellars, can be slipped over the shoulders thanks to leather straps, like a travelling salesman, to move around in the evening and help prepare cocktails. Cocktail Carrier Samuel Williams Cocktail Carrier is inspired by the traditional milk carrier basket. This project interprets the idea of "mix" by marrying the world of cognac with that of cocktails to be shared. Rémy Martin VSOP cognac becomes synonymous with conviviality by bringing friends together around a set of eight glasses and a cognac cocktail carafe. This object is mainly made of copper-plated steel, with two different finishes (polished and brushed). Keeping a copper look was an opportunity for me to revisit the traditional materials of cognac making and give it a more contemporary and premium touch. Crystal shaker Anouk Meier My project is a fusion between a vintage spirit bottle and a shaker, bringing together crystal and copper for their classic and luxurious look. During a party, the bartender can prepare the cocktail directly in this container, whose parts of the upper part take up exactly the codes and functions of the traditional shaker (stopper and strainer). Once the drink is finished, the cut glass base is brought directly to the table and the drink served in the glasses. Totem Hongchao Wang The Totem project stems from the desire to optimise and ritualise the cocktail service. The base, made of transparent glass, contains the ready-made drink. One "tier" above, a metal container is used as a container for ice. This piece, whose base is made of cork, functions as a cork to hermetically seal the carafe. The glasses are stacked in a small cavity in the ice bowl and remain easily accessible. The whole thing is then connected to a leather handle, which makes it easy (one-handed) and safe to carry. The combination of these shapes and materials creates a very sculptural and surprising object, similar to tribal totems, with animal heads stacked on top of each other.

One minute repeater On the occasion of the 24th edition of the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH), which took place in Geneva from 20th to 24th January 2014, the ECAL/ University of Art & Design Lausanne created, for watchmaker Vacheron Constantin, a special installation named “The Minute Repeater”. This installation is the result of a research work directed at ECAL by Vincent Jacquier, Head of Visual Communication Department, and Alain Bellet, Head of Bachelor Media & Interaction Design. This research, which brings together students from both Bachelor in Media & Interaction Design and Industrial Design, permitted to develop a stand for the watchmaker based in Geneva. Not less than 12 screens reveal the oneiric sense of the Calibre 1731 of Vacheron Constantin. Thank to the animations unveiled on each screen by the magic of magnifying glasses, ECAL proposes its interpretation of this minute repeater movement, known to be the flattest on the market. Collaboration with Hermès 2014 The collaboration with Hermes allowed the students from the Master of Advanced Studies in Design for Luxury and Craftsmanship to discover the universe of window displays, where supports, lighting and colours need to draw your eye to the objects being showcased. Wang Hongchao Sketches of Animals For this project designed for the French brand Hermès, I have been directly inspired by Pablo Picasso s abstract paintings and sculptures. Sketches of Animals is a collection of window displays, constructed in cherry wood, which highlight the value of Hermès products by using them to bring life to the different animals. A printed plate is then turned into the eye of a fish, cushions become the scales and a crystal glass the extremity of its antenna. This playful and narrative project has been designed for the stores in Zürich and Geneva on the occasion of the Fall/ Winter 2014 collections.

Workshop "One painting, one scene" Félix Vallotton retrospective at the Grand Palais This year s workshop had the particularity of confining us to a single location: the Château de la Sarraz, and of having a relationship - whatever it may be - with the work of Félix Vallotton. The films made in collaboration with the theater students of La Manufacture were sometimes inspired by this and sometimes opposed to it. Two films illustrate these possibilities in their own way. Commentaire Night s Dream is inspired exactly by one of the painter s paintings: pictorially first (frontal staging) and in the choice of characters (two women, one asleep, the other sitting on the same bed). From this silent painting, staging a secret that is not told, he creates a situation of speech, even of vaudeville. Josua Hotz adds a protagonist who will modify the rigid framework of the painting. The characters are embodied in their reality, their fragility (it is the same actress who plays both roles and it is interesting to see the difference in "acting"), and the image, nuanced, moving, takes us into an impressionist world, the opposite of Vallotton s art. Following recent trend surveys showing that more and more people bring food to their workplace, students from the Master in Product Design were asked to develop lunch boxes, food containers and accessories in relation to European, Asian and American cultures whilst considering SIGG s identity. Junk Museum This workshop, directed by Thomas Mailaender, was aimed at students in the second year of their Bachelor s degree in Photography. The students were immersed in the art of physically constructing an image and its presentation device. The idea was to broaden their artistic horizons through an awareness of installation, scenography and sculpture. The creative atmosphere of the workshop was enriched by a bold touch, where the singular smell of waste added an unexpected sensory dimension, transforming each creation into a unique exploration. Thomas Mailaender challenged the students to push the boundaries of photographic creativity. The project then took the form of an exhibition in Chavannes-Près-Renens. At the heart of this immersive experience, images were projected, hung, cut and superimposed, giving rise to unique, innovative and immersive works.
