Genius Loci - Spirit of the place

Genius Loci - Spirit of the place Genius Loci, or the spirit of the place, refers to the unique identity or essence of a location. In architecture, this principle suggests that the specific characteristics of a place should be reflected and extended in a design. In the case of the second-year graphic design students, they have applied this principle to communication projects focused on promoting or extending the identity of a particular place through design. Their work likely explores how to visually capture and communicate the essence of a space, using graphic design elements that resonate with the architectural features or history of the place. Image Creation BA1S2 – Insta Books

Image Creation BA1S2 – Insta Books In the age of social media, Instagram has become a true space for graphic experimentation. This semester, first-year Graphic Design students created a printed edition of at least 100 pages, exploring the question: what does it mean to design for Instagram? Through this investigation, they examined the platform s visual codes, its attention-driven dynamics, and the graphic forms it inspires. Each project reflects on how these creations can be translated, extended, or reinterpreted in the digital space. Balancing printed matter and online presence, these works outline new ways of inhabiting both images and networks.

Swiss Institute in New York presents World of Yum Yum, her first solo exhibition in the US. Through architectural interventions and a visual language that enlists both strategies of luxury advertising, merchandising and commerce, along with craft and DIY techniques, Lorenza Longhi s work considers spaces of display and the desires they engender. Taking its inspiration from a temporary exhibition space that the artist encountered in an airport, World of Yum Yum features a series of hyperreal closeups of artificial hand-made flowers, reminiscent of Chanel brooches, with a spy camera in the center. The artist used the spy camera s microphone to record atmospheric sounds of music as she strolled through department stores in Zürich and New York. A sound mix that, by the way, gives the impression of shopping... Jan Tschichold’s The New Typography: Its Roots and Impact on National Scenes Event
Jan Tschichold’s The New Typography: Its Roots and Impact on National Scenes

Jan Tschichold s The New Typography: Its Roots and Impact on National Scenes,26.04.2023,IKEA Auditorium, ECAL On Wednesday, April 26, 2023, ECAL welcomes scholars from the fields of art and design history and print culture for an international conference aiming to provide a better understanding of the cultural context of Jan Tschichold s book and the typographic movement that emerged from it. Jan Tschichold s essay Die neue Typographie (The New Typography, 1928) is a game-changing book, acclaimed as the curtain raiser of modern graphic design. While it takes the form of a critical essay and an operative manual, its sources have been understudied because of their difficult identification. Yet, The New Typography is simultaneously a victim of its own success and it has to deal with the consequences associated with canonisation. Having reached an almost mythical status, The New Typography is often taken for granted and rarely questioned or closely scrutinized. This paradox was the starting point of the research project “The Sources of Jan Tschichold s The New Typography”. Conducted at ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne (HES-SO) and supported by the Strategic fund of HES-SO, the project reconstructed, collected and contextualized the body of bibliographical sources included in The New Typography. This international conference invites scholars in the field of art and design history and print culture to present their research. The conference aims to provide a better understanding of the larger cultural context of Tschichold s book and the typographic movement that stemmed from it. The results of the project will be presented at the conference along with keynote lectures by Dr Paul Stirton, Professor emeritus at Bard Graduate Center, New York, Dr Christopher Burke, Principal Research Fellow at University of Reading, and Dr Julia Meer, Curator of the poster and graphics collection, Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg. The New Final Form Project
The New Final Form

The New Final Form The New Final Form is the result of a cross-disciplinary workshop run by the 1st year students in the Product Design Master s programme. Working with Ceramaret, a company based in Bôle that specialises in new ceramic manufacturing processes, the students imagined today s electrical sockets and switches. Our daily habits and our relationship with these devices have changed considerably over the last few decades, particularly with the battery-powered appliances that surround us. Thanks to the development of new technologies and new manufacturing processes, and to the properties of ceramics: good resistance to heat and pressure, and very good electrical insulation, the students came up with a series of original proposals rethinking the Feller electrical socket of today, an icon of Swiss design established by Max Bill in 1946.

New Order Project
New Order

Florian Hilt – New Order « New Order generates a series of encounters and interactions between distant elements through multiple approaches in the visual, digital and installation fields. Through these exchanges, I reveal my secret nature: my impulses, fears and dreams. By exploring them as infinite spaces with multiple levels of information, past, present and future mix to reveal new assemblages. My collection is made of contrasted fragments: web archives and smartphone pictures, ancient-looking artefacts and video games. The installation acts as a chaotic self-portrait and allows viewers to choose their own path and question themselves. By linking the elements that compose it, each experience is the result of a new order.» - Florian Hilt

New website: ecal-typefaces.ch,15.12.2021,wwww.ecal-typefaces.ch Active since 2016 and having published nearly 30 fonts so far, the ECAL Typefaces website has been completely updated with a new design and new features: ecal-typefaces.ch Active since 2016 and having published nearly 30 fonts so far, the ECAL Typefaces website has been completely updated with a new design and new features: www.ecal-typefaces.ch ECAL Typefaces is the first online type foundry based within a university. Its initial remit was to respond to frequent requests to purchase typefaces featured in ECAL corporate communications such as posters, invitation cards and catalogues. The foundry is now fully embedded in the ECAL Master Type Design programme and also showcases work from the school s Bachelor Graphic Design programme. All the fonts are designed by students. From 2021 this new website will offer a broader overview of our students works. We have now added a ‘Stories tab to present an ever-evolving collection of student writings that reflect on the challenges that are driving contemporary type design forward. These essays are written and edited in the Master Type Design theory classes under the supervision of Wayne Daly and Roland Früh. The fonts sold on ECAL Typefaces typically originated from classes tutored by Kai Bernau, Matthieu Cortat, Alice Savoie or Radim Peško, as well as workshops led by internationally renowned guests. These provide students with the opportunity to help select typeface releases and determine how they represent their typefaces in a professional foundry. Their designs are developed from early sketches to workable files under the close supervision of Malte Bentzen. The new version uses broader criteria and includes text fonts and larger families, enabling students to demonstrate a wider range of skills, thereby highlighting the working process. In addition, a new license model adds a more precise and clear approach to licensing fonts so that clients may find a license model that meets their needs more precisely. The design of the new website was created with the aim of making it easier for users to browse, test and purchase the typefaces. Half of the income generated from sales goes directly to the students, with the remainder contributing to running costs, technical assistance and inviting guest lecturers to offer us their insights into the world of font design.

Higurashi book launch

Higurashi book launch In Summer 2019, thirteen students from the ECAL Master s in Photography programme supervised by Milo Keller travelled to Japan to work on thirteen individual projects in collaboration with Japanese photographer Taisuke Koyama within the framework of the Tokyo Photographic Research project. The students artworks range from still and moving images to computer-generated photographic visuals and explore multiple facets of the Japanese megalopolis which is, once again, undergoing major transformation in preparation for the 2020 Summer Olympic Games. Some projects focus on aspects specific to the city, from the destruction of small residential houses to the construction of the gigantic Olympic Village and the conquest of new territories by the sea. Other works investigate distinctive Japanese culture such as home-cooked food, the appetite for designing humanoid robots, the blending of child and adult worlds in manga, pachinko gambling, the reinvention of ikebana and young girls as ‘rising stars. Finally, the works seek to visually represent more abstract concepts such as loneliness, emptiness and intimacy in a city that, due to its density, size and power, offers a challenging, fascinating and extremely stimulating complexity to the eyes of the thirteen photographers. Finally, the works seek to visually represent more abstract concepts such as loneliness, emptiness and intimacy in a city that, due to its density, size and power, offers a challenging, fascinating and extremely stimulating complexity to the eyes of the thirteen photographers. New State of Equilibrium Project
New State of Equilibrium

Olivia Wünsche – New State of Equilibrium New State of Equilibrium is a visual interpretation of my years-long spiritual quest and psychedelic adventures. Inner peace, a sense of deep connectedness, unbounded love for the natural world and longing for transcendence are central themes I tried to visualise throughout this project. Both the book and the installation attempt to question and investigate the mechanisms and limitations of our cognitive and sensory perception. By emphasising the simultaneous presence of the visible and the invisible, I seek to challenge the secular, materialistic worldview that still seems to prevail in our Western culture.

The Sources of Jan Tschichold’s The New Typography Project
The Sources of Jan Tschichold’s The New Typography

The Sources of Jan Tschichold s The New Typography Jan Tschichold s essay Die neue Typographie (The New Typography, 1928) is a game-changing book, acclaimed as the curtain raiser of modern graphic design. While it takes the form of a critical essay and an operative manual, its sources have been understudied because of their difficult identification. This project aims to reconstruct the body of sources that Tschichold drew on to understand the broader cultural context of the book, through an international conference on its impact and a travelling exhibition. The year 2018 marked the 90th anniversary of the publication of Jan Tschichold s Die neue Typographie (The New Typography). After almost a century, Tschichold s game-changing book, together with the typographic movement that stemmed from it, still attracts the interest and curiosity of graphic design historians and practitioners. The book has entered the historiographical canon and its appeal has not faded. Yet, The New Typography is a victim of its own success: it enjoys the benefits of canonisation, while suffering some side effects. Having reached an almost mythical status, The New Typography is often taken for granted and rarely questioned or closely scrutinised. This paradox is the starting point of the present research project. Jan Tschichold (Leipzig 1902 – Locarno 1974) was a German-born, Swiss-naturalised typographer, type and book designer, teacher, typography theorist and critic. In the 1920s he became one of the leaders of the New Typography movement. His conversion to the Modernist cause was mediated by the Bauhaus lesson. This was learnt first through a visit to the Bauhaus exhibition in Weimar in the summer of 1923, and encouraged in the following years through acquaintance and friendship with key exponents of the Modernist movement such as László Moholy-Nagy and El Lissitzky. With the Nazis rise to power in 1933, Tschichold escaped Germany and took refuge in Switzerland, where he spent the rest of his life with the exception of two stays in England, in 1937 and between 1947 and 1949. Published in Berlin in 1928, Tschichold s The New Typography is a manifesto. It follows an earlier statement published in October 1925 in a special issue of the trade magazine Typographische Mitteilungen, entitled “Elementare Typographie.” It was intended as a textbook for graphic designers, printers, typesetters and typographers. The term “New Typography” was first used by László Moholy-Nagy in the Bauhaus exhibition catalogue of 1923. The New Typography, also known as “elementary” or “functional” typography, is the manifestation of Modernism in graphic design and printed communication. Its rules included the privilege for sans-serif typefaces, non-centred page layouts, photography and photomontage, standardised paper sizes, and the active use of white space. After the war, Tschichold gradually distanced himself from the New Typography. He condemned the rigidity of the movement from both a political-moral and a strictly typo- graphical perspective. The research project relies on the hypothesis that, despite being broadly considered a pivotal and game-changing book that paved the way to modern graphic design, The New Typography deserves further and closer scrutiny. Building on the hypothesis that bibliographic sources are among the so-far overlooked and neglected aspects of The New Typography which are waiting to be identified, discussed and contextualised, the research project employs them as a means to open the black box in which Tschichold s book has been kept until now. Once the bibliographical references (books, magazines, grey literature) have been identified, the project investigates what they can tell us about the lineage in which The New Typography was rooted and the kind of discourses and networks it stemmed from. The focus on the sources aims to provide a more complex alternative to the worn-out rhetoric of the “pioneers” of graphic design.Main applicantECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne Matthieu Cortat Davide FornariResearch teamChiara Barbieri Martin SøbergPeriodMay 2019 – June 2021Supported byECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne HES–SO, Fonds stratégique RCDAVDisseminationWebsite die-neue-bibliographie.ch Conference Jan Tschichold s The New Typography: Its Roots and Impact on National Scenes, 26 April 2023, ECAL/École cantonale d art de Lausanne

Montana 1977 (photography)

Aurel Ganz – Montana 1977 (photography) Rey and Moretti are two undercover narc in the middle of a police operation in the Swiss mountains of Valais. It s during a routine operation that one of them will do a terrible mistake and together they will have to escape from this difficult situation. Fiction / 20 min Comment A crime film set in Switzerland in the 1970s: the project for which I worked in close collaboration with Kimyan Flückigeris as promising as it is ambitious. The role of director of photography was both creative, involving a lot of freedom, and crucial in recreating the atmosphere of the 1970s. My dream of shooting with anamorphic lenses fitted well with the atmosphere of the film and enabled me to push the film s aesthetics quite far. After a lot of work, the project marked the pinnacle of my three years of studies which ended in an explosion of joy. Aurel Ganz

It s during a routine operation that one of them will do a terrible mistake and together they will have to escape from this difficult situation. Comment As a fan of genre cinema, I undertook the project of making a crime film that takes place in 1977. The narrative focuses on two narcotics officers who have committed murder. The short film is set in Valais. I sought to evoke 1970s American cinema through the western and film noir genres. I used these different “codes” to create my own cinematic universe and participate in the development of genre film in Switzerland. Kimyan Flückiger

From Video Art to New Media: The Case of the Locarno VideoArt Festival (1980-2001) Project
From Video Art to New Media: The Case of the Locarno VideoArt Festival (1980-2001)

From Video Art to New Media: The Case of the Locarno VideoArt Festival (1980-2001) This research project looks into the shift from video art to new media, taking a major but little-studied event, the Locarno VideoArt Festival (1980-2001), as a case study: a pioneering space for broadcasting video art in Europe and a place for exploring electronic art which took place every year from 1980 to 2001 on Monte Verità. The analysis of the festival s archives and the creation of an exhibition of the works presented there highlight its pioneering role for those who wish to explore the history of information and communications theory. This research project seeks to refresh our understanding of video art and serves a dual purpose: as a piece of curatorial research to test the hypothesis that video art is characterised by its interactive quality, and a systematic enquiry into the nature and function of video art and new media. The research work spreading out over a three-year period combines tools developed in information and communications science with contributions from the history of video and electronic art, as well as contemporary art theory, curatorial studies, aesthetics and critical theory. As a result the project re-evaluates the place of Switzerland and Europe in the international video art network. Additionally, the previously unpublished festival s archives, the audio-visual documentation of the seminars and our recorded interviews with the festival s major artists are published on the project s dedicated website. The curatorial project, which takes place at the Elisarion in Minusio, is centred around the idea of a virtualisation of video art through computer-generated images and the internet. The core ideas behind the research are thus combined with the exhibition medium in order to assess their coherence.Main applicantECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne (project leader)Research teamDr Adeena Mey (researcher) Maud Pollien (researcher) Cédric Fluckiger (assistant)Visiting lecturersLorenzo Bianda Marco Maria Gazzano Guest artists Lorenzo Bianda Robert Cahen Francesco Mariotti Francisco MeirinoPartnersClaudio Berger, Centro culturale e museo Elisarion, Minusio Elio Schenini, MASI – Museo d arte della Svizzera italiana, Lugano Nicole Schweizer, Musée cantonal des beaux-arts, Lausanne Samuel Gross, Istituto Svizzero, Rome Marco Maria Gazzano, Università Roma Tre, Rome Grégoire Quenault, Alain Carou, Labex project, Université Paris 8 and the French National Library, Emergence of video art in EuropePeriodOctober 2017 – September 2020Supported byECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne SNSF – Swiss National Science Foundation Centro culturale e museo Elisarion, MinusioDisseminationPublication Francois Bovier and Adeena Mey (eds.), VideoArt Festival Locarno: a Prospective, Lausanne: ECAL / Minusio: Centro culturale e museo Elisarion, 2019. Blackout

Loïc Dupasquier – Blackout Blackest Ever Black, a British record label, announced it was shutting down in 2019. This project pays tribute to the label through a post-mortem cassette reissue of its ten most outstanding musical releases. These feature two levels of information, a listing of how the tracks make the listeners feel and the barely visible metadata of the releases. The font used is my revival of a typographic drawing by Peter Behrens, which, just like the label did, enables me to take things from the past and make them contemporary.

Maria Tasula – Possibilities for the New End of the World With an installation of prints, text and a publication,  Possibilities for the New End of the World  proposes a near future where humans are released from the burdens of work thanks to full automatisation and universal basic income. The looming end of the world is reversed to a utopia where the days are spent lingering and enjoying the excess of beauty on earth. By using imagery and language familiar to fashion and advertising that employ a constructed promise of being available to everyone, the installation presents a space to contemplate everything at length. The luxury to waste time and the commencing ideas might become more crucial than we ever thought. ECAL book 2018 Project
ECAL book 2018

ECAL book 2018 To be a filmmaker in 2018 is to be a bit of a spiritualist. The rarefaction of the film object, humble, palpable, which weighs in the hand, is a fact. Its historical place of diffusion, the theatre, is also disappearing in Europe. Even DVDs and USB keys are relics of yesterday s world. Modern computers don t care about the ports where these objects could drop anchor. There is hardly any material trace of the cinematographic creation anymore. Some data stored on a cloud on the other side of the world, wind in a cloud. The filmmaker s job is therefore to produce the invisible for nomadic souls, not to say wandering souls, in a bus in Tokyo or a café in Denver. It is to speak to the spirits. There is no nostalgia in this observation of the times, just the desire to adapt to the Zeitgeist. At ECAL, we love objects. Like Georges Perec, who was "all about the language that surrounds things, about what s underneath, about everything that feeds them, about everything that s injected into them. Because it is a language, the cinema is matter. It agglomerates what we are, we the creators, we the spectators, in a communion of thought. To testify to this encounter, an object was needed. And the most beautiful of all: a book. To say what nourishes us, but also what we give to eat. The encounters, the essays, the filming, the trips, the debates that make up the living and vibrant body of our school. The one that asks the only question that matters: for whom are we doing what? May this book be the Ouija board that allows us to communicate with the spirits, here and elsewhere, today and tomorrow. Many thanks to Rachel Noël, coordinator of the ECAL s Cinema Department, initiator and curator of this first volume. And to all the contributors. Lionel Baier / Head of the Film Department
