Last Minute Risk Project
Last Minute Risk

Last Minute Risk “What is clearly conceived can be clearly expressed, and the words to say it come easily.” Nicholas Boileau, *L art poétique*. As students embark on their final year of study at ECAL, with their interests and methods taking shape, this final project offers an opportunity to challenge their own rules, established practices and influences, to refuse to settle for the status quo and to take risks.

100 Beste Plakate 2025: Two Posters from ECAL selected Article
100 Beste Plakate 2025: Two Posters from ECAL selected

100 Beste Plakate 2025: Two Posters from ECAL selected Congratulations to the ECAL Communication Team, whose posters were selected in the 100 Beste Plakate 2025 competition. The “ECAL Diplomas Exhibition 2025” and the “ECAL Open Day 2025” posters, both designed by Benoît Brun, ECAL graduate and graphic designer for its Communication Team, are part of the 62 posters from Switzerland selected in the 100 Beste Plakate 2025 competition. While the colors and stripes of the “ECAL Diplomas Exhibition 2025” poster echo the architecture of ECAL building, the design of the “ECAL Open Day 2025” poster alludes to a reinterpretation of a well-known proveb, suggesting that “All roads lead to ECAL”. This contest, which singles out 100 posters from Germany, Austria and Switzerland every year, aims to promote the poster as a powerful visual medium and to ensure its continuous reinvention and evolution. The selected works are presented in a travelling exhibition and a yearbook. The visual identity for this 25th edition of the competition, including the book, has been designed by Ira Ivanova and Lou Hillereau from Yukiko Studio. The opening of the inaugural exhibition, as well as the book launch, will take place on June 11, 2026 at the Kulturforum, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin. The exhibition will then tour in Germany, Austria and Switzerland — notably at the Gallery l elac in ECAL — as well as in Korea, Moldova and Romania.WEBSITE100 Beste PlakateOPENING EXHIBITION12.06–05.07.2026 Opening reception 11.06.2026, 6:30pm Germany Kulturforum, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin Matthäikirchplatz, 10785 Berlin, GermanyRELATED EVENTS

Prix Dior 2025 The Art of Color Event
Prix Dior 2025 The Art of Color

Prix Dior 2025 The Art of Color,26.02–27.03.2026,Gallery l elac, ECAL ECAL welcomes the 8th edition of the Dior Photography and Visual Arts Award for Young Talents exhibition. Created in 2018 in partnership with LUMA Arles and ENSP Arles, the Dior Photography and Visual Arts Award for Young Talents aims to reveal young photographers and/or videographers while fostering an essential dialogue with leading international photography and art schools. This exhibition presents the works of emerging international artists, brought together around the theme “Face-to-face”, exploring the relationships between form, color, and identity through photography and video. Following its presentation in Arles, this 8th edition highlights a new generation of talented creators, whose works demonstrate remarkable artistic mastery, combining formal freedom with creative maturity. Among the laureates, two ECAL graduates from the Bachelor Photography stand out for their deeply personal and imaginative universes. In A Home With No Roof, explores her past and the intimate space of her childhood through miniature models of her home, confronting memories and traumas with a creative distance that allows objects, bodies, and space to engage in dialogue. Each image becomes a hybrid staging, between refuge and threat, enabling a silent confrontation with personal history and a path toward self-reconciliation. For her part, presents Alien Love Call, a series of six images inspired by 1950s cinema, 1970s design, and science fiction. Her retro-futuristic narrative depicts a love story between two extraterrestrials, blending nostalgia for an idealized future with a fantastical universe. The images, shot in medium-format film, create a visual refuge where romance and imagination flourish within a setting that is at once familiar and unreal.DATES AND SCHEDULES27.02-27.03.2026 Wednesday to Friday, 1pm - 5pm Free entryVENUEGalerie l elac ECAL / Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne Av. du Temple 5, 1020 RenensOPENING & TALKThursday, February 26th 6pm Talk, IKEA auditorium Julien Frydmann, Founder OFFSCREEN Festival Nathalie Herschdorfer, Director Photo Elysée Vassilis Oikonomopoulos, Artistic Director, LUMA Arles Joel Quayson, Winner Prix Dior 2025 Aline Savioz, ECAL Bachelor Photography Student 7pm Opening, Galerie l elacARTISTSQianyi Bao, Sara De Brito Faustino, Momo Nakaqawa, Wenlong Qi, Joel Quayson, Raine Roberts, Aline Savioz, Eliot Stein, Chia Yun Wu, Danilo Zocatelli Cesco

Arboricrop — Next generation agriculture using real-time information from tree crops Project
Arboricrop — Next generation agriculture using real-time information from tree crops

Arboricrop — Next generation agriculture using real-time information from tree crops Arboricrop is a research project conducted by a multidisciplinary consortium bringing together Vivent Biosignals, Changins – University of Viticulture and Oenology, and ECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne (HES-SO), with the support of Innosuisse. Its objective is to develop a miniaturized plant electrophysiology sensor designed for use in real agricultural conditions: the VITA Mini Sensor. VITA measures plant physiological signals and identifies stress situations before visible symptoms appear. The aim of the project is to provide farmers with early, plant-specific information (water, nutritional, biotic, or abiotic stress) in order to support decision-making and limit systematic or preventive interventions based on general assumptions. The system is part of an approach that seeks more targeted use of agricultural resources, in a context of increasing climate variability. Design was integrated from the earliest phases of the project, in direct connection with the scientific, agronomic, and technical developments. This early integration made it possible to align technical choices (electronic architecture, antenna, power supply, cabling) with real-world field-use constraints, as well as maintenance and durability requirements. The sensor is built around a transparent polycarbonate housing, allowing direct visibility of its internal components. This approach aims to facilitate inspection, understanding of operation, and maintenance. The enclosure is waterproof while remaining fully disassemblable. The product architecture is based on complete modularity: the electronic board (PCB), battery, cables, and sensors are all separable and replaceable. The object s design takes into account real conditions of use (handling with gloves, quick installation, exposure to weather). The design work also addresses information structuring: electrophysiological signals are translated, via Vivent s algorithms, into synthetic, actionable indicators, with progressive access to more detailed data when needed. VITA is now produced in series and deployed in a range of agricultural contexts, including open-field crops, arboriculture, viticulture, and controlled-environment growing systems, across Europe, North America, and South America.Principal investigatorStéphane Halmaï-VoisardResearch teamPietro Alberti Maxwell Ashford Alain Bellet Stéphane Halmaï-Voisard Laurent SoldiniPeriod01.11.2023–30.04.2026Funded byInnosuisse – Agence suisse pour l encouragement de l innovation, Confédération suissePartnersChangins – Haute école de viticulture et œnologie Vivent BiosignalsLecturers and researchersVivent Biosignals: Dr Nigel Wallbridge – Founder, Executive Chairman Carrol Plummer – Founder, CEO Dr Andrzej Kurenda – Chief Scientific Officer Dr Andreas Kolbeck – Plant Scientist Laura Baude – Plant Scientist Nick Barker – CTO Changins: Prof Markus Rienth – Professor of Viticulture Dr Amanda Malvessi Cattani – Research AssociateContributorsYounès Klouche Frederik Mahler-Andersen

In Loving Memory of Milo Keller (1979–2025) Article
In Loving Memory of Milo Keller (1979–2025)

In Loving Memory of Milo Keller (1979–2025) Milo Keller, photographer, teacher and researcher, a leading figure in contemporary photography in Switzerland and a recognised player on the international art scene, has passed away. His death deeply affects ECAL, where he played an essential role for nearly two decades, as well as all those with whom he shared his vision, his thoughts and his commitment. Born in 1979 in Lugano, Milo Keller obtained his Bachelor s degree in Photography at ECAL in 2005, which he complemented with a Postgraduate Diploma in Photography in 2007. An internationally renowned artist, he has had a rich and demanding career, marked by numerous publications and collaborations in the fields of architecture, design and fashion, notably for Wallpaper, Numéro, Vogue and L Officiel, as well as with fashion houses such as Balenciaga, Vitra and Moncler. His rigorous and open artistic practice has always been nourished by a constant dialogue with the transformations of the photographic medium. Alongside his work as an artist, Milo Keller has been committed with great vigour and remarkable generosity to teaching at ECAL since 2007. He has headed the Photography Department since 2012 and in 2016 founded the Master s programme in Photography, which he has developed as an international space for critical reflection, research and visual experimentation. Through research projects such as Automated Photography, Augmented Photography and, more recently, Soft Photography – a project scheduled for development in 2026 – he has thoroughly examined the changes in contemporary photography, exploring the relationships between technologies, uses, materialities and sensibilities in the production and circulation of images. Milo Keller conceived of this research as a genuine educational space, inviting students to become critical actors in contemporary imagery. Deeply committed to transmission, he saw pedagogy as a field of dialogue and mutual learning. Convinced that teaching is a living process, he often reminded us that ‘we always learn a great deal from our students. His approach, both demanding and benevolent, left a lasting impression and helped to shape a community based on exchange, curiosity and openness. Until his final days, Milo Keller remained attentive to the life of the school and the projects of its students, demonstrating his unwavering commitment and passion for photography and its challenges. ECAL extends its deepest condolences to his family, friends, colleagues and students. We express our profound gratitude to Milo for his unwavering commitment, his pedagogical acumen, and his invaluable contribution to the school. His artistic, intellectual, and human legacy will continue to inspire future generations. Thank you, Milo.

EXHIBITION OF THE PRIX IMAGES VEVEY X ECAL: LEA SBLANDANO

EXHIBITION OF THE PRIX IMAGES VEVEY X ECAL: LEA SBLANDANO,24.09.2025–15.02.2026,L Appartement – Espace Images Vevey From 24 September to 21 December 2025, as part of L Appartement – Espace Images Vevey, Lea Sblandano, winner of the Prix Images Vevey x ECAL 2024, presents Neijuan, her Bachelor Photography project. The Images Vevey × ECAL Prize was created in 2021 to strengthen the collaboration between the two institutions. Each year, it offers a graduate from ECAL s Bachelor or Master Photography programme a first solo exhibition opportunity. The awarded project is presented as a monographic exhibition by Images Vevey, either during its biennale or in its permanent space. Winner of the Images Vevey × ECAL Prize 2024, presents Neijuan, a project developed during her Bachelor in Photography at ECAL. “Neijuan,” a Mandarin slang word meaning “involution,” refers to a withdrawal into oneself, a symptom of an increasingly fast and competitive society. Through a documentary and collaborative approach, the artist follows a group of people she met online in forums, video games and chat platforms, where new identities emerge outside the norms of the physical world. The exhibition unfolds across three spaces: The Corridor, a threshold between the real and the virtual, combining portraits and urban landscapes. The Living Room, where the Neijuan book mock-up revisits key images of her research, oscillating between avatars, Asian megacities and reflections on the sexualisation of bodies. The Cinema, an immersive installation of nine screens showing videos, webcams and avatars, centred on Kei, a virtual roommate living in Japan. This work blurs the boundaries between real and virtual, questioning connected solitude, fragmented identities and the transformation of intimate spaces.DATES & SCHEDULE24.09–21.12.2025 > Extended until February 15, 2026 2 pm–6 pm Wednesday to Sunday Free entryVENUEL Appartement – Espace Images Vevey Gare CFF de Vevey Hall principal (2e étage)OPENINGWednesday, September 24, 2025, 6 pmWEBSITEimages.chGUIDED TOUROctober 9, November 6, December 4, 2025

Zufall??? Schicksal!!! Event
Zufall??? Schicksal!!!

Zufall??? Schicksal!!!,17.09–17.10.2025,Gallery l elac A collective exhibition, conceived by artist Miriam Laura Leonardi, which offers an unstable space, without a central theme or linear path, inviting visitors to wander and reflect. A Bit of School, A Bit of Snow, And It Derails... claims that art is more than just another subject taught at school. The exhibition deliberately breaks with spatial balance, avoiding a central theme or linear path. With no clear beginning or end, it invites movement, wandering, and uncertain navigation. Unlike immersive formats, the layout creates an unstable space — one that encourages reflection. Through a selection of diverse works and approaches — from artists of different generations, ECAL graduates, Swiss and international — the exhibition offers landmarks within a timeless process. These artistic positions spark doubt, raise questions, and create disorientation. Our stance? Affirming negation. Can one say “I love art” or “I hate art” — especially as an artist? And within the very context of an art school? Coincidence??? Fate!!! VISIONS DU RÉEL: MASTERCLASS & ECAL FILMS Event
VISIONS DU RÉEL: MASTERCLASS & ECAL FILMS

VISIONS DU RÉEL: MASTERCLASS & ECAL FILMS,04–13.04.2025,Nyon As guest of honour at the 56th edition of the Visions du Réel festival in Nyon, filmmaker Raoul Peck will be giving a masterclass on Tuesday 8 April, organised in partnership with the Cinémathèque suisse. The programme also includes five films by the ECAL s Cinema Department and alumni. MASTERCLASS: RAOUL PECK Filmmaker, Haiti Born in Haiti in 1953, and raised in Congo, New York, France and Germany, Raoul Peck is one of the most important filmmakers of the late 20th and early 21st century. Over the course of the last forty years, the filmmaker has anchored his complex body of work, which includes internationally acclaimed feature films and documentaries, in a deep political commitment. The genesis of his cinematographic tales stems in equal measure from his multicultural personal experience, his journey as an activist, and what he refers to as a “Marxist reading” of the global economy. An indefatigable narrator of tales as seen from the viewpoint of those subject to domination, Raoul Peck has also questioned the links to capitalism in his own personal history, haunted by the ghosts of colonialism. His films examine omissions from official Western history, shining a light on aspects ignored by this account, often sketching a portrait of politicians or artists who have openly deconstructed it, such as Patrice Lumumba in Lumumba, La Mort du prophète, a feature film released in 1990, followed bythedocumentary Lumumba (2000), James Baldwin in I Am Not Your Negro (2016), and, most recently, Ernest Cole with Ernest Cole: Lost and Found (2024). Summoning the past to examine the present and rejecting any call to neutrality, Raoul Peck s work is a reinvention of activist cinema, which he transforms using a cinematographic, poetic and highly subjective language, freely intermingling genres and formats. Exterminate All The Brutes, a hybrid series in four parts (produced by HBO) – which will also be screened during the Festival – is a perfect example of this: it is a journey back in time, a radical re-examination of the history of European colonialism, from America to Africa, using personal, visual and literary narration to starkly revisit the darkest hours in human history right up to the present day. It won a Peabody Award in 2022, and was also the subject of a critical and literary essay. An event in collaboration with the Cinémathèque suisse. ECAL LECTURE – JEAN-CHARLES DE CASTELBAJAC Event
ECAL LECTURE – JEAN-CHARLES DE CASTELBAJAC

ECAL LECTURE – JEAN-CHARLES DE CASTELBAJAC,18.03.2025,IKEA Auditorium, ECAL An avant-garde designer and artist, Jean-Charles de Castelbajac anticipated what today constitutes the basis of new creation: art and fashion, detour and collaboration. Multi-disciplinary work of Jean-Charles de Castelbajac - art, fashion and design - revolves around a short chromatic range of blue, yellow and red, one of the finest representations of which was to dress Pope John Paul II, bishops and priests for the 1997 World Youth Day. Passionate about heraldry, the science of coats of arms, vexillology, the science of flags, semiotics, the study of signs, pop art and the world of childhood, his art and fashion bring together these dualities: the epic, the historic, the traditional and the alternative. He has collaborated with many artists, including Keith Haring, Lady Gaga, Robert Mapplethorpe, Pedro Winter and Pharrell Williams. He began his career as a designer alongside his mother, setting up Ko & Co in Limoges. His first obvious garment was a coat cut from his boarding-school blanket, as well as clothes made from mops, thus launching the concept of upcycling. He went on to found the Jean-Charles de Castelbajac fashion house in 1978. As early as the 1980s, he anticipated the current decompartmentalization of art and fashion by collaborating with artists of all disciplines on his shows: musicians, photographers and visual artists. He worked with Miquel Barceló, Ben and Robert Combas to create tableau dresses, with Robert Mapplethorpe, Keith Haring and Cindy Sherman to create invitations for his shows, and with Malcolm McLaren to create the music for his shows. In 1986, he was exhibited at New York s Fashion Institute and Technology. In 2006, at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, then at the Musée Galliera in Paris in 2007. Also an artist, he created a 3700 m2 fresco for Orly airport in Paris in 2015. In September 2018, he created a monumental work for the Biennale des antiquaires de Paris at the Grand Palais. From 2018 to 2022, he is artistic director of United Colors of Benetton. His artistic work is the subject of an exhibition entitled Le Peuple de Demain at the children s gallery of the Centre Pompidou in 2021-2022, presented at the West Bund Museum in Shanghai and at the Centre Pompidou Malaga in 2023. In 2022, he will also be present at the Mobilier National with the scenography for the exhibition No taste for bad taste, retracing 40 years of French design, and with a carte blanche entitled L atour d assises, focusing on French styles. In June 2024, he installs a 15-metre trellis sculpture on the wall of the Société de Géographie in Paris, called “L Ange Géographe”. He was chosen by the Diocese of Paris to design the liturgical vestments and ornaments for the reopening of Notre-Dame de Paris in December 2024.DATES & SCHEDULE18.03.2025 6pm Free entryVENUEIKEA Auditorium, ECALWEBSITEjeancharlesdecastelbajac.com

In a small industrial town in crisis, somewhere in Belgium, Bruno and Sonia, both under 40, love each other and survive from day to day, on her welfare and his petty theft. But Sonia is about to give birth, and is worried about the baby on the way. When she shows him little Jimmy on his way out of the maternity ward, Bruno barely gives her a glance. Shortly afterwards, a woman with whom he does business suggests a convenient way to earn the money he s always after: childless couples would be willing to give a lot for a baby like his....DATES & SCHEDULESaturday, March 15 2:30pmVENUECapitole - Cinémathèque suisse Av. du Théâtre 6, 1005 LausanneTICKET & INFOrencontres7art.ch

The Images Vevey x ECAL Prize was created in 2021 and strengthens the collaboration between the two institutions. In the rooms of L Appartement, , ECAL Bachelor Photography Graduate, presents A Home with No Roof, her award-winning Diploma project for the Prix Images Vevey x ECAL 2023. A Home with No Roof is a series of photographs in which the photographer evokes the dysfunctional home of her childhood. Using models and self-portraits, she recomposes the interior of her home, imbued with often painful memories. The project plays on the familiarity and strangeness of the ordinary. Through an immersive installation, each piece extends the essence of the images, blending scales and textures to blur the boundary between reality and its reproduction. ECAL × AGO – Seoul Highlights Event
ECAL × AGO – Seoul Highlights

ECAL × AGO – Seoul Highlights,07.11–01.12.2024,SEOUL DESIGN FESTIVAL Off-site Exhibition - Seochon Lounge An innovative collection of lighting installations designed to blend into public spaces, created by the ECAL s Bachelor Industrial Design in collaboration with AGO Lighting, under the supervision of designer Adrien Rovero. The importance of light in every space is essential, which is why lighting should be the starting point when building a space. Most AGO Lighting collections offer lighting options that can be modulated by architects and designers. AGO Lighting has teamed up with students from ECAL s Bachelor of Industrial Design program, under the direction of Swiss designer , to design a collection of lighting installations for use in public spaces such as museums, hotels and bars. Focusing primarily on the spatial aspect of light, our approach was to design lighting structures based on components supplied by AGO and inspired by the Seoul landscape. The challenge we set ourselves was to reimagine the chandelier, an object that confers distinctive status on a space, while fulfilling its original function of diffusing functional light. ECAL x AGO Seoul Highlights is presented for the first time at the Seochon Lounge, operated by Design Press, in collaboration with the Embassy of Switzerland in Korea. This project was made possible with the generous support of the Summer University program of the Direction générale de l enseignement supérieur (DGES) of the State of Vaud and the Hanok Heritage Preservation Division of the Seoul Metropolitan Government. Sara De Brito Faustino winner of the Prix Françoise Champoud 2024 Article
Sara De Brito Faustino winner of the Prix Françoise Champoud 2024

Sara De Brito Faustino winner of the Prix Françoise Champoud 2024 Congratulations to photographer Sara De Brito Faustino, ECAL graduate, who wins the Prix Françoise Champoud 2024, an award that will support the development of her promising artistic career. The Fondation Françoise Champoud has just awarded its annual prize to talented photographer , an alumnus of ECAL. The prize, endowed with CHF 50,000, is awarded alternately in the fields of lyrical art, performing arts and art & design, supporting high-potential emerging artists. Sara De Brito Faustino, awarded in the art & design category, won over the jury with her striking artistic project, which explores the meanders of memory through disturbing and poetic images. Graduating with a Bachelor s degree in photography from ECAL, Sara De Brito Faustino distinguished herself with her graduation work A Home with No Roof (previously named “A Home With No Roof”), a project that had already won her the Vevey Images Prize at the ECAL graduation ceremony in 2023 . His singular approach consists in reconstructing, from fabricated and cobbled-together elements, scenes evoking missing memories, like fragments of recomposed reality. According to Florence Grivel, journalist and member of the jury, her work is “powerful and gripping, in which an ambivalent and troubling reality is narrated, in which the missing memory is restored from surprising elements”. Winning the Prix Françoise Champoud is a major boost for this young photographer. “This financial support is a precious help that will enable me to pursue my projects and devote myself fully to my art”, confided Sara. The artist plans to exhibit her project A Home with No Roof in its final version at L Appartement, Vevey, from November 27. This monographic exhibition will mark a crucial stage in her career, revealing to the public a universe that is both intimate and universal, shaped by meticulous and singular artistic techniques. Sara De Brito Faustino, who is also an academic assistant at the ECAL, is determined to build on this success, with the support of the Champoud Foundation. Her passion for photography, born in adolescence and nourished by intense personal experiences, is now recognized by prestigious institutions.

BURNING CORSO - Thomas Mailaender Project
BURNING CORSO - Thomas Mailaender

BURNING CORSO - Thomas Mailaender In the spring of 2024, Thomas Mailaender and the students of the ECAL Bachelor in Photography entered the ruins of the club with the intention of making it resonate once again. Between archaeology, documentary research, and imaginative speculations, the group of adventurers crafted a surprising exhibition path blending mold and glitter, ashes and glamour. For one night, the Corso was filled with explosive sounds and images in a fiery tribute to the nights of Renens.

L’ECAL at Mapping Festival

L ECAL at Mapping Festival,10–26.05.2024,Geneva ECAL will be showcasing its expertise at the Mapping Festival 2024, celebrating its 20th anniversary in Geneva, with a program exploring new territories in digital art. DATES & SCHEDULE10–26.05.2024OPENINGMay 10th 2024, 6pmVENUEMapping Festival – Le Commun Rue des Vieux-Grenadiers 10 1205 Genève  STUDENTS, , , , , , , , , WEBSITEmappingfestival.comECAL 360 LAB The ECAL 360 LAB takes over Syllepse, the water tank in Geneva s Jardin des Nations, to offer an artistic experience focusing on the interconnection between moving images, visual effects, rhythm and immersion. Bachelor Media & Interaction Design students present a series of immersive creations questioning representation and the place of the audience at the heart of a 360° sequence. Creations Captivus by Marine Dang and Jamy Herrmann Dive Inside by Julien Caulet and Paul Dorsaz Empty Room by Marius Parisod and Pierre Teissier Liminial Space by Emilie Maier and Aryana Noorani Ocytocine by Nora Fatehi and Michael Pica These projects explore new territories in digital art. Among them, “Sazen City” stands out for its unique immersive experience, combining machine learning and collective exploration of our memories. The ECAL, through its participation in the Mapping Festival, offers an avant-garde vision of artistic creation, where the spectator becomes the actor of a universe in perpetual redefinition. Sazen City by Tickie Bindner Tickie Bindner s installation plunges us into the heart of our collective memory landscape. Each participant is invited to explore a territory, then send postcards that generate an imaginary, dynamic cartography. Unlike panoramas or urban views, these digital maps illustrate memories with universal emotions, introducing a new form of epistolary exchange. Inspired by Italo Calvino s “Invisible Cities”, Sazen City uses machine learning to co-create a collective territory. As it is built, this shared landscape questions the singularity of our memories and the role of artificial imagination in our digital environments.

L'ECAL AT VISIONS DU RÉEL: MASTERCLASS & ECAL FILMS Event
L'ECAL AT VISIONS DU RÉEL: MASTERCLASS & ECAL FILMS

L ECAL AT VISIONS DU RÉEL: MASTERCLASS & ECAL FILMS,12–21.04.2024,Nyon As guest of honour at the 55th edition of the Visions du Réel festival in Nyon, filmmaker Jia Zhang-Ke will be giving a masterclass on Tuesday 16 April, organised in partnership with the Cinémathèque suisse. The programme also includes six films by the ECAL s Cinema Department and alumni. MASTERCLASS: JIA ZHANG-KE Cinéaste, Chine Moderated by Jean-Michel Frodon, film critic and journalist A leading figure in independent Chinese cinema, and contemporary cinema more broadly, Jia Zhang-Ke will be presenting a masterclass exploring his captivating and multifaceted oeuvre which examines the history of his country and the characters who inhabit it. A retrospective of his films will run throughout the festival edition. Born in 1970 in the mining region of Shanxi, bordered by the Great Wall of China, Jia Zhang-Ke is a leading light in contemporary cinema. He belongs to a generation of Chinese filmmakers who were profoundly affected by the Tiananmen Square protests. His diverse filmography, which comprises more than 20 short and feature works, borrows elements from both genre and non-fiction cinema. Switching from taught thrillers to documentaries and encompassing a myriad hybrid formats woven together by non-professional actors, fictional works on a canvas of reality, and fantasies bypassing otherwise restrained stories, Jia Zhang-Ke has spent two decades creating a filmography as coherent as it is shifting. His stylistically diverse oeuvre deploys the full range of cinematographic techniques (16 and 35mm, DV, HD, etc.). Approaching his subject as a visual artist, Jia Zhang-Ke offers a subtle and subversive immersion in Chinese society, imbued with a sublimated realism. Resisting censorship and tirelessly defending the cultural significance of his country s cinematic output, Jia Zhang-Ke weaves long-form, epic-style stories to explore personal and multifaceted journeys that challenge the notion of dissolution of the individual within the national narrative. Ever willing to wrestle with the realities of China s recent history, the filmmaker offers a profoundly humanist representation that draws on memories and recollections. To achieve this, Jia Zhang-Ke creates a narrative polysemy that focuses its gaze on the everyday lives of ordinary people living in “intermediate towns” scattered between the rural life and that of the country s burgeoning megacities. By doing so, Jia Zhang-Ke s films dissect the promises and mirages offered under the forced march of modernisation in effect since the 1960s. They examine the effects of this collective story, specifically the imposition of state capitalism on human beings, by providing a romantic and sensitive counter-narrative. An essential and uncompromising filmography that has often fallen foul of the government s strict censorship regime. An event in collaboration with the Cinémathèque suisse. Text: Visions du Réel FILMS As part of Visions du Réel, from April 12 to 21, 6 films by ECAL s Cinema Department and alumni are scheduled. Watches and Wonders GENEVA

Watches and Wonders GENEVA,09–15.04.2024,Palexpo, Geneva On the occasion of Watches and Wonders Geneva 2024, ECAL is teaming up with Alloyed to present a collection of watch straps using 3D printing technology. On the occasion of Watches and Wonders Geneva 2024, ECAL joins forces with Alloyed, a company with expertise in metal printing technologies, to present an original collection of watch straps. Designed by students in the Master of Advanced Studies in Design for Luxury and Craftsmanship program, these bracelets have been developed using 3D modeling programs, enabling the creation of unique pieces that go beyond the limits of traditional techniques. Five of the 15 concepts devised by the students were selected and 3D printed from a fine powder of TI6AI4V titanium–an alloy composed of titanium, aluminum and vanadium–whose melting point of around 1,600° Celsius is achieved using a laser beam. Regularly used in the aerospace industry, this printing technique, known as Laser Powder Bed Fusion (L-PBF), creates objects with ultra-high-performance mechanical properties. Each project, presented in the form of a prototype or animation, finds its inspiration in the beauty of nature, through organic structures, as much as in complex systems, closer to engineering. This collaboration brings together technology, craftsmanship and design–in line with the world of haute horlogerie–by combining the expertise of engineers specializing in materials science with the know-how of jewelry craftsmen.DATES & SCHEDULEFrom April 13 to 15, 2024 Tickets & InformationVENUEPalexpo Genève Route François-Peyrot 30 1218 Le Grand-SaconnexWEBSITEwatchesandwonders.comSTUDENTSEsther Alcade, Helena Choi, Minjun Choi,  , ,  , Kao Onishi  Raazia Hasnain, Nuttiya Ratchtrachenchai, , John Stagaman, Kou Tanikami, Murilo Weitz, Inbal Yarkoney , TEACHERASSISTANTHEAD OF PROGRAMMETALKMonday 15 April 2024 at 3pm Talk about the links between design, and innovation in an academic context and a presentation of the creative approach around the projects on display in the LAB. L’Arte del Vetro Grezzo Event
L’Arte del Vetro Grezzo

L Arte del Vetro Grezzo,09–17.09.2023 A selection of glass works inspired by the techniques and world of the Venetian glass Masters. On the occasion of The Venice Glass Week 2023, and as an initiative of the Fondation Etrillard (Geneva), the Fondazione dell Albero d Oro (Venice) and the Swiss manufacturer ALCO, this project aims to combine knowhow and creativity. Thanks to this support, eighteen students from the Master in Design for Luxury & Craftsmanship from the ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne have had the unique opportunity to meet and work with Murano-based Master glassmakers. This research project began with a visit of manufactures on the Venetian island, internationally renowned for its glassmaking history. During one week the students have had the chance to meet a number of artisans and discover with them ancient production techniques. At the heart of these prestigious factories, every detail is potentially transformed into a source of inspiration: a tool, raw blocks of glass, scraps accumulated in containers or blown glass pieces stacked for decades on wooden shelves. As well as the techniques and creative worlds that emerged from these workshops, the inspiration also came from life in Venice, which many of the students (from ten different nationalities) were discovering for the first time: the omnipresence of water, the colours and reflections, the erosion of materials and the contrast between the different elements. The work of the students, under the guidance of designer Ini Archibong, led to the selection of five concepts, grouped together in works made from raw materials. In the form of ‘ready-mades , the aim of this exhibition is to capture the history and skills of the Master glassmakers through creative compositions featuring simple rods, plates or blocks of glass, produced in Murano using specific processes handed down from generation to generation. Avant l’océan (image) Project
Avant l’océan (image)

César Cadène – Avant l océan (image) My graduation project at ECAL involved being the director of photography for the film Avant l Océan, written and directed by student director Ilan Dubi. Inspired by the cinema of the Safdie brothers and John Cassavetes, this film was a real technical and creative challenge. We worked with long focal lengths, shoulder movements and natural light to capture the nocturnal wanderings of two young people stuck in Lausanne. The minimalist lighting, the uniqueness of each location and the intimate point of view of the camera reinforced the authenticity of the narrative and aesthetic framework of the film. This project allowed me to refine my instinctive and sensitive approach to the camera and light work.

IMAGES VEVEY X ECAL AWARD EXHIBITION: AUGUSTIN LIGNIER

IMAGES VEVEY X ECAL AWARD EXHIBITION: AUGUSTIN LIGNIER,28.06–05.11.2023,L Appartement – Espace Images Vevey From 28 June to 5 November 2023, as part of L Appartement – Espace Images Vevey, Augustin Lignier, winner of the Images Vevey x ECAL Prize 2022, will exhibit Container, his Master s degree project in Photography. The Images Vevey x ECAL Prize was created in 2021 and strengthens the collaboration between the two institutions. Its aim is to offer a first exhibition experience to a student graduating from the ECAL s Bachelor s or Master s degree in photography. The winning work is presented in the form of a monographic exhibition by Images Vevey on the occasion of its biennial or in its permanent space. In the Cinema of L Appartement, Augustin Lignier, graduated of ECAL s Master of Photography programme, presents Container, his graduation project, which won the Prix Images Vevey x ECAL 2022. The artist built a pristine white cube inside his bedroom and, every day for almost two months, he locked himself inside it. As he repetitively and obsessively triggered the shutter release, he put his body s limits to the test to experiment with the apparatus. This performative and conceptual approach resulted in Container, a project that questions the alienating relationship between a photographer and their camera.DATES AND SCHEDULE06.28–11.05.2023 2pm-6pm Wednesday-Sunday Free entryADDRESSL Appartement – Espace Images Vevey Gare CFF de Vevey Main hall (2nd floor)ARTISTOPENINGTuesday, June 28, 6pm

LA POSTE × ECAL Project
LA POSTE × ECAL

LA POSTE × ECAL For the Swiss Post Office, students from ECAL s Bachelor Graphic Design and Bachelor Media & Interaction Design are creating a postage stamp based on artificial intelligence. Thanks to augmented reality, Metascape transports Swiss Post users into an imaginary and poetic universe on the way to a destination that remains elusive. Strange, but not really foreign: that s the unsettling impression given by the design of this special stamp called "Metascape". Using augmented reality technology, this creation, made up of elements that are both familiar and surreal, immerses us in a fantastic world shaped by artificial intelligence. An Instagram filter lets you access the virtual journey simply by scanning the QR code on this exclusive postage stamp. With "Destination" as its theme, this collaboration between ECAL students and Swiss Post initially gave rise to fourteen concepts created through group work. After a pre-selection of five works by a jury made up of members of ECAL, Swiss Post and the Stamp Commission, the "Metascape" project was chosen to move from imagination to reality. Discover below the other pre-selected projects. What s next ?A destination is basically a journey from point A to point B. But what happens during this elapsed time? The idea is to illustrate an epic with a board that would be a pawn s playground. We follow this character as he discovers an unsuspected universe through each environment he crosses, with the aim of satisfying his thirst for discovery of the world. Through the accumulation of collected memories, the character blossoms, constantly searching for his next destination. The filter allows you to move around a deconstructed game board. From one square to the next, we discover a different world in which fictional elements interact and transform. Par , , L envolThe stamp s illustrative visual identity symbolizes the notion of travel, exchange and sharing. Both the stamp and the animation poetically illustrate the notion of travel. The bird takes us into a naïve narrative world. As it travels, it transforms to symbolize the notion of connection and exchange. Par , , Métamorphose“Métamorphose” is an augmented reality project that provides both an artistic and scientific perspective, guiding you from the lowest point to the highest point in Switzerland. Unpacking Tschichold’s Library Event
Unpacking Tschichold’s Library

Unpacking Tschichold s Library,27.04–26.05.2023,Gallery l elac, ECAL From April 27 to May 26, ECAL presents Unpacking Tschichold s Library at gallery l elac. An exhibition in the form of a library presenting the books mentinoned in Jan Tschichold s seminal publication The New Typography (1928). Opening on Wednesday, April 26. Jan Tschichold s “The New Typography” is a critical essay and an operative handbook that paved the way to modern graphic design. It is a game-changing book that still attracts the interest and curiosity of design historians and practitioners after almost a century since its publication in 1928. Yet, it is simultaneously a victim of its own success, and it has to deal with the consequences associated with canonisation. Having reached an almost mythical status, the publication is often taken for granted and rarely questioned or closely scrutinized. This paradox was the starting point of the research project “The Sources of Jan Tschichold s ‘The New Typography ”. Conducted at ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne and supported by the Strategic fund of HES-SO, the project reconstructed, collected and contextualized the body of bibliographical sources included in “The New Typography”. On the occasion of the opening on Wednesday, April 26, the conference "Jan Tschichold s "The New Typography": Its Roots and Impact on National Scenes" will be held at ECAL from 9:15 to 18:00. Jan Tschichold’s The New Typography: Its Roots and Impact on National Scenes

Jan Tschichold s The New Typography: Its Roots and Impact on National Scenes,26.04.2023,IKEA Auditorium, ECAL On Wednesday, April 26, 2023, ECAL welcomes scholars from the fields of art and design history and print culture for an international conference aiming to provide a better understanding of the cultural context of Jan Tschichold s book and the typographic movement that emerged from it. Jan Tschichold s essay Die neue Typographie (The New Typography, 1928) is a game-changing book, acclaimed as the curtain raiser of modern graphic design. While it takes the form of a critical essay and an operative manual, its sources have been understudied because of their difficult identification. Yet, The New Typography is simultaneously a victim of its own success and it has to deal with the consequences associated with canonisation. Having reached an almost mythical status, The New Typography is often taken for granted and rarely questioned or closely scrutinized. This paradox was the starting point of the research project “The Sources of Jan Tschichold s The New Typography”. Conducted at ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne (HES-SO) and supported by the Strategic fund of HES-SO, the project reconstructed, collected and contextualized the body of bibliographical sources included in The New Typography. This international conference invites scholars in the field of art and design history and print culture to present their research. The conference aims to provide a better understanding of the larger cultural context of Tschichold s book and the typographic movement that stemmed from it. The results of the project will be presented at the conference along with keynote lectures by Dr Paul Stirton, Professor emeritus at Bard Graduate Center, New York, Dr Christopher Burke, Principal Research Fellow at University of Reading, and Dr Julia Meer, Curator of the poster and graphics collection, Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg.
