Natalie Maximova – There Is No Spoon – 2021

by Natalie Maximova

Mention Bien This artwork is an interpretation of the possibility that we are living in a computer-generated reality, similar to a video game, inspired by the ideas of simulation theory. The world is built as an assemblage of soulless structures with no indication of time or place. The rapid change of architectural styles throughout the journey explains the ambiguity of simulation theory and the impossibility of proving it. There are multitudes of architectures and imaginations, thus there are multitudes of mysteries. It is a journey halfway between dream and nightmare. In the absence of a total understanding, what else can we do but plough ahead? Video installation: CGI animation created in the game engine, surround sound.

Lara Ziörjen – No Hard Feelings

by Lara Ziörjen

No Hard Feelings is a personal exploration of the world we live in. Through these images, a powerful vision of our culture emerges – who are we, how do we consume and ultimately, where are we headed? The book shows an abundant world in which fast fashion, artificial food and useless objects accumulate. An important aspect of this work is the combination of images and the work on detail, approaching an object, analysing and understanding it. It addresses the absurdity and banality of everyday life. The images were all taken with a mobile phone, an essential tool that complements my conceptual.

The narrative style and the visual universe contrast with the real cruelty of the images and language.

Marie Noury – Nous voir ensemble

by Marie Noury

« What possible stories can twenty-four by six centimetres trigger? A photography that I hold dear generates a collective conversation. Nous voir ensemble takes the form of an investigation into a familiar and founding archive where words and visions meet. From this vernacular photography, voices narrate, project, and imagine. What story, memory and presence do these shots, on and off-screen, generate? How do words bring back to life a picture that has been worn out over time by the viewer’s gaze ?»

Steven Rüthy – Insight

by Steven Rüthy

« Do we still see everything that happens around us ? Insight is a short film set in an architectural social housing complex in Bümpliz-Bern, which offers a unique perspective of the world as viewed by an elderly couple living in the Holenacker district on the outskirts of the Swiss capital. In this project I confront the viewer with a way of life which for us as visual artists and most likely for many others, is unimaginable. I question the spatial notion of a secure/safe space and how it is used and therefore perceived from an external point of view, my own. Insight therefore consists of stepping into the shoes of someone who has blurred vision, understanding what it is like and how it affects the way you live.»

Entrecroisés is a multilingual book featuring nine languages that addresses multilingualism in Switzerland. The aim of the book is to promote foreign languages in Switzerland and to compare the data of the Federal Statistical Office with reality. Throughout the book, the reader discovers the interweaving of this linguistic diversity within Switzerland through colours, infographics, expressions, photographic surveys and testimonies. The book thus sheds new light on migration in Switzerland and the cohabitation of these different cultures within one nation.

Maël Bächtold – Milkshake

TYPE DESIGN

Maël Bächtold – Milkshake

with Matthieu Cortat, Kai Bernau

Milkshake is a typeface family which was initiated by anemoia (nostalgia felt for a period in the past that was not lived) for the 70s. The music, the freedom, the vibes, and mostly the aesthetics in terms of type and graphic design of that period strongly influenced the direction of the project. Milkshake is divided into two sub-families. The first one, Milkshake Display is the spine of the project: its voluptuous curves and generous drops combined with sharp edges give it a dynamic look while its alternates and swashes exaggerate its flow and funkiness. To add a contemporary touch and versatility, the family is complemented by text cuts, which are much calmer, friendlier and more stable, suited for longer lines in small sizes.

Nowadays, we produce more and more waste. In an ecological and civic approach, composting areas have been developed in gardens and in composting centres. However, only 10% of this waste is truly recycled and composters do not offer solutions for apartments. T-Lom is a terracotta vermicomposter, designed for one to three people, to hang on your balcony. It takes up very little space and makes it easy to recover its precious juice, a powerful fertiliser for your plants.

INDUSTRIAL DESIGN

Théo Blanchard – Roille

The Roille chair is a response to the City of Lausanne’s desire to harmonise the design of restaurant terraces. The City plans to eliminate all plastic outdoor furniture and installations by 2022. Wooden and metal furniture will be preferred. The tubular structure and rolled aluminium sheeting make the chair very light. Its folding seat allows restaurant owners to keep the furniture on the terraces and/or to store them without water stagnation, making it easier for the waiters to set it up.

Manon Novelli – Ephemeral Soap

INDUSTRIAL DESIGN

Manon Novelli – Ephemeral Soap

with Maddalena Casadei, Stéphane Halmaï-Voisard, Julie Richoz

Hotels generate a lot of waste, especially by offering small bottles of shower gel and soaps that are never really finished. Ephemeral Soap is a complimentary set for hotels including several shampoos, body and hand soaps. What makes them so special? They only last as long as a shower and a hand wash. The ingredients are whipped to incorporate air. When heated, these small air bubbles expand, and the soap becomes six times larger, just like popcorn, with a foamy texture. It is then covered by a thin protective layer of solid soap to avoid packaging. The set also includes reusable bamboo boxes to distribute the soaps in every room.

Humberto Pérez-Gagnon – Modular

DESIGN FOR LUXURY & CRAFTSMANSHIP

Humberto Pérez-Gagnon – Modular

by Humberto Pérez-Gagnon

For my graduation project, I decided to carry out research on the relationship between movement and the scale of an object we interact with. The first step was to explore the size of the modules to better understand the relationship between their size, the space they occupy and their possible interaction. The second step was to create a functional assembly and modify the materials used in order to create a contrast between the size and weight of the object. By using heavy and light materials of different sizes, it is clear that their functions and relationship with space also change. Finally, based on the idea of a mobile object, I worked on a series of objects that take advantage of movement.

Carlota Pons Pardo – Raw

DESIGN FOR LUXURY & CRAFTSMANSHIP

Carlota Pons Pardo – Raw

by Carlota Pons Pardo

Inspired by the aesthetic essence of material boards during the process of a project, this research project intends to collect the essence of purity and simple forms to create a sculptural and functional object. The mirror is the central element, being the structure and the base, which in itself creates direct interaction between the materials through reflection and gives meaning to the whole. Thanks to the verticality, the balance and tension of the materials are questioned, which is reinforced by a flexible element that encompasses and adds dynamism to the composition. This project is designed as a sculptural object without pretending to be defined by a clear function. It is a retrospective approach to the use of raw material waste, their second life and their play in space.

Sarah Rémy – Sōl

DESIGN FOR LUXURY & CRAFTSMANSHIP

Sarah Rémy – Sōl

by Sarah Rémy

Sōl (Latin for “sun") is a ritual object for skin care, which celebrates the beginning and the end of the day, turning it into a moment dedicated to slowness and the senses. Sōl is inspired by layering, a multi-step Japanese ceremony. Natural products are used successively: oil, soap, aloe vera, Konjac sponge and water. Combined with glass and bronze, it creates superimposition and light effects. The solar colours are gradually revealed during the make-up removal process. The production is the result of meetings with French and Swiss craftspeople. The glass was mouth blown at the Atelier-Musée du Verre in Trélon, France, and the dome was cast in a traditional bell foundry.

DESIGN FOR LUXURY & CRAFTSMANSHIP

Salman Rouhani – Ovid

by Salman Rouhani

When you stand in front of a mirror what do you focus on? Your hair? Your smile? Perhaps you notice how your clothes fit? But when was the last time you took notice of yourself, not as an individual in an environment but rather as a part of that environment. The environment influences you just as much as you influence the environment This mirror enables users to meet themselves and the environment with more conscious awareness. The shape acts as a visual cue to gently encourage users to see themselves not as a part of the whole. Furthermore, the curvature quite literally magnifies the craftsmanship on the interior.

Mika Pica – Confessionnal

MEDIA & INTERACTION DESIGN

Mika Pica – Confessionnal

with Alain Bellet, Christophe Guignard, Gaël Hugo, Laura Nieder, Pauline Saglio

Confessionnal is a web app that enables users to anonymously confess their behaviour on social networks. With the advent of social media years ago, the behaviour of users varies. Unmentionable acts are sometimes committed on these platforms. This project is inspired by the Catholic confessional as we know it but is based on the digital era we live in. Users live the anonymous experience with a mask as participants or spectators. They confess orally and personalise their mask based on their age, the platform or the main subject of the confession. On the other hand, they can observe other masks and listen to the confessions of other users.

Rayane Jemaa – Is This the Middle East?

MEDIA & INTERACTION DESIGN

Rayane Jemaa – Is This the Middle East?

with Alain Bellet, Christophe Guignard, Gaël Hugo, Laura Nieder, Pauline Saglio

Is This the Middle East? investigates representation of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) in a selection of video games. I am interested in the patterns, repetitive artefacts, locations and texts in games that claim to be set in the MENA region. These objects become archetypes. Are these photo-realistic environments also realistic in the scenes they depict or do they become another backdrop for war-related games? Using photogrammetry to reconstruct these environments, I address the implications of seeing an abundance of often over-simplified images of the Middle East, especially in a world where video games are becoming not only a global phenomenon, but also a means to encounter other cultures.

Valentine Leimgruber – Sanctuaires

MEDIA & INTERACTION DESIGN

Valentine Leimgruber – Sanctuaires

with Alain Bellet, Christophe Guignard, Gaël Hugo, Laura Nieder, Pauline Saglio

Through a narrative experience, Sanctuaires invites visitors to discover their relationship with plants. This project is structured as an interactive exhibition on the great trees of the city of Lausanne. As in a treasure hunt, visitors have to look for the trees, thanks to clues and a map on the app. When they find one, they connect to it through touch, thus triggering the beginning of the experience. Like a wise storyteller, the sanctuary-tree shares a tale with the visitors, telling them about its sensitive experience and observable universe. Urban tree development coincides with the advent of issues related to the ecological crisis. What do trees have to say about this and how can their perception help us improve our lifestyles?

Basil Dénéréaz – Reif

Basil Dénéréaz – Reif

with Alain Bellet, Christophe Guignard, Gaël Hugo, Laura Nieder, Pauline Saglio

Mention Très bien Through our entertainment media, partnerships and sponsored content are becoming omnipresent. Based on this observation, Reif i s a fictional account of the objectification of a digital influencer. Through different media created with computer generated images, we visualise the change of identity of this character who allocates areas of her body as advertising spaces, generating her metamorphosis from human to object. In order to realise the content for Reif , a process of digital production was set up, adjusting to the standards of avatar creation which affiliates this fiction to the current technical reality.

David Benito Py – Pigeons, They Make Up the Beehive

by David Benito Py

« Every city is the unique work of its inhabitants and, paradoxically, it concerns every one of them in a different way. In my opinion, in order to solve the apparent contradiction between intimacy and urbanity, the appropriation of space, both material and mental, is necessary. Only then can urban wandering be experienced as a real sensory experience. Through this installation, I invite visitors to live my personal experience of space, horizontal and vertical, contemplative and obsessive. As Jean-Christophe Bailly put it, “Each city has its own slang and has, within itself, a clandestine city that pierces it in scattered meshes whose bare thread the stroller puts back together.”»

Emeline Courcier – Sous les Cendres du Mekong

by Emeline Courcier

« Sous les cendres du Mekong is a film that questions the coexistence of opposed traditions and cultures, life and death, and the confrontation between history and individual stories. Against the backdrop of the health crisis and anti-Asian racism, family ties are revealed through conversations questioning my place as a Viet Kieu daughter and my lineage. Through our beliefs in reincarnation, I project myself onto a familiar yet foreign figure: my mother’s cousin, who drowned in the Mekong, creating a link between past and present, war and peace, words and silence. It is through traumatic memory and psychological heritage that the after-effects of a war from which my family escaped reach me, taking precedence in my dreams and my mind.»

PHOTOGRAPHY

Axelle Bruniau – Leughenaer

by Axelle Bruniau

« Leughenaer is an autobiographical fiction about my relationship to my childhood in a particular geography and culture – Dunkirk – a city in the north of France. This film refers particularly to my non-binarity and transfemininity in a social context where carnival culture and cross-dressing are an important part of life for three months a year. The architecture of the city of Dunkirk is of particular interest to me because of the parallel I can draw with my own person. This city was 90% destroyed during World War II and was quickly rebuilt into a modern city. Deconstructing in order to reconstruct, that is how I went back to make this film.»

Antoine Martin – Via Alpina

PHOTOGRAPHY

Antoine Martin – Via Alpina

by Antoine Martin

Swiss iconography presents the mountains under two ambivalent aspects: on the one hand, a hostile and dangerous environment, and on the other hand, an environment tamed and dominated by humankind. The interesting aspect of this project is that it transposes certain characteristic images from this iconography and leads viewers to question the boundary between stereotypes and the reality in which they live. It also questions the use of mountains as an «artefact» conveyed by commercial clichés. Viewers are led to get involved physically with the image by immersing themselves in the relief of this alpine imaginary, forced to observe the paradox of its symbolic and monumental reduction through commercial imagery.

PHOTOGRAPHY

Jenna Callewaert – Her and I

by Jenna Callewaert

« What do you do when you miss everything? How do you avoid being haunted by the place you left? A painful absence mixed with hope, nostalgia that associates past and future, like a paradox. Above all, this project is a quest: that of finding a part of myself in a country where I once lived, and whose only memories I had were of colours, smells and sensations. Throughout my journey, I sought to explore and confront these memories built on a form of absence. Between dismay and delight, I often asked myself the question of the integrity of these images. Were these memories real or pure fabrications of the mind? I thus designed this book with the aim of capturing a process of transformation where each image, composed of sepia, shadows and ochre, carries in its flesh the testimonies of the past and illustrates that nothing ever dies.»

Caroline Perrenoud – Entre-deux, il n'y a pas rien

by Caroline Perrenoud

There is a space between what we call reality and virtual reality, which by definition is unreal. In this in-between space, full of possibilities, identities are created and emancipated. Sexualities are discovered and avatars are roles that we choose to embody. These roles are manifold and represent the multiplicity of the self. Women in their plurality, dissidents, the in-between space enables us to show ourselves, to observe each other, to make ourselves powerful and claim our place and freedom. Through self-sexualisation, the monetisation of the self-image, sexual or romantic relationships, the avatars evolve seamlessly and transform. They decide, take over the space and meet in an immersive video installation.
