Project by ECAL for Vacheron Constantin presented in Asia,11.06–15.08.2014,Taipei, Seoul, Shanghai, Nanjing Vacheron Constantin will present the project "The Minute Repeater" by ECAL /University of Art & Design Lausanne during this summer in various Asian cities (Taipei, Seoul, Shanghai, Nanjing ...). On the occasion of the 24th edition of the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH), which took place at Geneva in January 2014, the ECAL created, for watchmaker Vacheron Constantin, this special installation, result of a research work directed at ECAL by Vincent Jacquier, Head of Visual Communication Department, and Alain Bellet, Head of Bachelor Media & Interaction Design. This research, which brings together students from both Bachelor in Media & Interaction Design and Industrial Design, permitted to develop a stand for the watchmaker based in Geneva. Not less than 12 screens reveal the oneiric sense of the Calibre 1731 of Vacheron Constantin. Thank to the animations unveiled on each screen by the magic of magnifying glasses, ECAL proposes its interpretation of this minute repeater movement, known to be the flattest on the market. Exhibition "La part du dessin" by Pierre Charpin,01.05–05.06.2014,Gallery l elac, Renens From 1st May to 5th June 2014 at the l elac Gallery in Renens, ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne presents “Pierre Charpin – la part du dessin”. The French designer exhibits some hundred drawings on various media (paper, tarpaulin...). The exhibition is complemented by a 160-page monograph published by JRP | Ringier and a special serigraphy made for the occasion. “If you look closely at the essential purity of objects designed by Pierre Charpin, you will notice a form of discretion, or even frailty. This delicacy is characteristic of a presence that beckons to us rather than pose as a sign. This “poetic” trait in his work is contributed by drawing. Indeed, for Pierre Charpin, drawing has never been just a step in the object production process. It is a practice in its own right which, on the one hand, singles out his signature and, on the other, reflects a relationship more innate to the form. This is why in recent years the corpus of his work includes – along with sketches of objects finalised upon production – “drawings of drawings”. Produced in large formats, these aspire to no further reality than their own. In series of four, of three or sometimes alone, these drawings provide the opportunity of a direct and immediate approach to the world of forms, in line with his artistic training. For it is first and foremost through drawing that a world emerges, appearing before us. Drawing acquires poetic power through the simple economy of its means – a pencil, a surface – and its desire to bring forth the form. Poiesis, in ancient Greek, tells of the creation of a world… by the power of the gods, by the hand of man. Free from the constraints of production, without any other purpose than that imposed by their own momentum, the forms drawn by Pierre Charpin unfold in playful freedom. This is a search, a journey of hand and thought towards a form that is not yet clear, although he may perhaps glimpse it. By endless repetitions of the same gesture, by chromatic variations on the same line or the same point, this tension becomes a plastic strength, an inner dynamism which involves the viewer s eye in the emergence of form. The exhibition features a series of objects presenting a playful interpretation take on the concept of the “smart home”. They were made by Bachelor students in Industrial Design and Media & Interaction Design at the ECAL. A project directed by Alain Bellet and Chris Kabel. Images HD “ With Delirious Home, ECAL students teach us to take control of the latest techniques and appliances we thought controlled us. The students demonstrate their artful mastery of electronics, mechanics and interaction, developing a new kind of esthetic which goes further than just a formal approach,” explain Alain Bellet and Chris Kabel, the heads of the project. The “Delirious Home” exhibition presents with humour and originality a selection of projects arising from fruitful collaborations between Bachelor students in Industrial Design and Media & Interaction Design at the ECAL. For one semester, students worked in groups to concoct friendly mirrors that reflect only our image when we look at them: hypersensitive cactuses that like it when we give them a caress, two armchairs that invite you to enjoy a lively and meaningful “tête-à-tête”, a series of food domes that celebrate taste sensations with mellow sounds when they re opened, a group of containers that defies the laws of gravity, a clock that imitates your gestures, a very accommodating curtain, a fan that amplifies your breath, and a spoon able to follow a cup wherever it goes. Collaboration with Rémy Martin Under the supervision of designer Tomas Kral, the students worked on the theme of mixology (the association of materials, just like the mixed ingredients that make up a cocktail) and developed in a few weeks various projects, focused either on objects related to a recipe or on ritual. For the launch of this project with Rémy Martin, we had the chance to spend two days in Cognac to discover the secrets of the production process and the cellars of the House, through numerous tastings, and then to immerse ourselves in the trendy Parisian world of cocktail bars by testing numerous recipes. In the end, 10 objects were designed by the 10 students from the programme. Nomad Rachel Suming My project is inspired by the street vendors that can be found all over the world. The current gastronomic trend is towards foodtrucks and street food revisited. Applied to the Rémy Martin universe, I imagined a tray in the house colours, which would invite a mobile, younger and more contemporary approach to cognac. The idea of "mix" is found in the use of the object which allows the preparation of a VSOP cognac cocktail prepared in front of you and at the minute. But it also lies in the mix of the house s identity codes with a more contemporary use: the oak and copper tray, echoing the cognac cask in the Rémy Martin cellars, can be slipped over the shoulders thanks to leather straps, like a travelling salesman, to move around in the evening and help prepare cocktails. Cocktail Carrier Samuel Williams Cocktail Carrier is inspired by the traditional milk carrier basket. This project interprets the idea of "mix" by marrying the world of cognac with that of cocktails to be shared. Rémy Martin VSOP cognac becomes synonymous with conviviality by bringing friends together around a set of eight glasses and a cognac cocktail carafe. This object is mainly made of copper-plated steel, with two different finishes (polished and brushed). Keeping a copper look was an opportunity for me to revisit the traditional materials of cognac making and give it a more contemporary and premium touch. Crystal shaker Anouk Meier My project is a fusion between a vintage spirit bottle and a shaker, bringing together crystal and copper for their classic and luxurious look. During a party, the bartender can prepare the cocktail directly in this container, whose parts of the upper part take up exactly the codes and functions of the traditional shaker (stopper and strainer). Once the drink is finished, the cut glass base is brought directly to the table and the drink served in the glasses. Totem Hongchao Wang The Totem project stems from the desire to optimise and ritualise the cocktail service. The base, made of transparent glass, contains the ready-made drink. One "tier" above, a metal container is used as a container for ice. This piece, whose base is made of cork, functions as a cork to hermetically seal the carafe. The glasses are stacked in a small cavity in the ice bowl and remain easily accessible. The whole thing is then connected to a leather handle, which makes it easy (one-handed) and safe to carry. The combination of these shapes and materials creates a very sculptural and surprising object, similar to tribal totems, with animal heads stacked on top of each other.

In this workshop, overseen by Nathalie Du Pasquier, each team was tasked with creati ng a unique way of presenting everyday objects. Through the contexts of the presentations, the objects take on new meanings and their inherent banality is brought into question. 12 students from the HEAD in Geneva and 19 from ECAL Master of Product Design worked together in 6 groups. At the end of the week, the results were exhibited at the gallery ELAC. Souvenir items for The Olympic Museum To mark the reopening of The Olympic Museum, the ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne has been working on designing souvenir items for the Museum shop, created by Bachelor of Industrial Design students after a workshop with Hector Serrano, a Spanish designer based in Valencia. In December, The Museum reopened after a makeover that will allow it to offer its visitors new experiences after 20 years of existence. To celebrate this event, The Olympic Museum invited the ECAL to work on a series of souvenir items for its shop. The exhibition offers a selection of works produced by 58 young talents during their Photography Bachelor curriculum at ECAL. All these images were chosen by exhibition curator Nathalie Herschdorfer, who has developed several internationally acclaimed projects around emerging photography, as well as by Milo Keller, head of the Photography programme at ECAL, and Alexis Georgacopoulos, ECAL director. Charlotte Hauser – Extra Omnes Extra Omnes I worked around the Conclave, the moment when the new Pope is elected. More than the religious symbols, I was interested in the media coverage of this event. Once the doors of the Sistine Chapel close, there is nothing to do but wait. Still, about 5000 journalists were in the Vatican, sent there for an extensive live coverage. While waiting for the famous white smoke, they had to generate a steady flow of information, they had to fill the blank. I chose to show this mass of information, collecting articles, tweets, and transcriptions of TV and radio broadcasts, produced only during the 26 hours of the Conclave. By organizing them in a loose chronological order, I wanted to see how these bits of information evolve within minutes, how they repeat themselves, and how they comment on each other. The images, descriptive or distorted, evoke the heavy atmosphere of the event and a feeling of vertigo. Julien Savioz – Warming by the Devil s Fire Warming by the Devil s Fire recounts the life of Robert Johnson. Considered today as one of the fathers of early Blues Music, he died in fact anonymously in 1938 at the age of 27 and fell into oblivion. It was only during the 60 s that white folk and rock musicians rediscovered his 2 albums and started being interested in his life. In 30 years though, his story had been told so many times and in so many different ways that it had turned into a tale. Theories, white fascination and romantic visions completed the myth, to which – as a European fan – I decided to contribute by telling my own version. Vitrines ECAL/Hermès at Zürich,03.09–15.11.2013,Store Hermès Zürich As a result of a collaboration with Hermès (Switzerland), the students of the Master of Advanced Studies in Design for Luxury and Craftsmanship of ECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne conceived vitrine proposals for their Zürich store. Under the supervision of Head of department Nicolas Le Moigne, the aim of the workshop was to create 5 large and 9 small vitrines by developing different compositions around Hermès s annual theme of “A sporting Life”, while staying true to the brand s universe and design codes. Following a presentation of life-size mockups, one of the 10 propositions particularly seduced the jury of 3 brand managers. The “Silhouette” project by student Fabien Gerlier is conceived of different sculptural structures designed to present the objects from the Autumn-Winter collection. Caught in the beam of light of a projector, the objects create shadows which illustrate the “A sporting Life” theme. Thus a climber climbs a mountain created out of the shadow of an item of clothing while a dancer appears graciously due to the superposition of jewellery, a scarf and a belt. Combining simplicity and poetry, this idea was developed in all 5 of the store vitrines, creating different compositions, each one playful and artistic. What happened to your childhood dream? This book questions the whys and wherefores of what the so called Generation Y thinks about life, work and inspiration. How are we supposed to act? I spoke to 14 people from different backgrounds, with different ambitions and dreams on a linguistic and visual level. The answers are surprising, inspiring and simply frank. The whole publication uses "Oskar" a font family I drew especially for this project which is serious but special at the same time. New Handwriting Tools Job Wouters  aka Letman, well known for its lettering artworks, took out of his suitcase pencils and markers, as well as strange utensils much different than a typical pen and asked to his students to create, produce or divert objects from their original function to turn them into new handwriting tools. Students brought back plastic fans, water hoses, electric toothbrush, treadmills, and other uncommon objects to generate their very own handwriting machines. After a lot of trial-and-error experimentation, specific gestures and choregraphies, these newly constructed DIY machines brought about a unique aesthetic and a variety of proportion in the letter forms they produced. The results included experimental videos, books, posters, and photographs. In conclusion, the project facilitated a fun and productive week. Job Wouters aka Letman, well known for its lettering artworks, took out of his suitcase pencils and markers, as well as strange utensils much different than a typical pen and asked to his students to create, produce or divert objects from their original function to turn them into new handwriting tools. Students brought back plastic fans, water hoses, electric toothbrush, treadmills, and other uncommon objects to generate their very own handwriting machines. «ECAL Terroir» au Marché de Renens,27.04.2013,Place du Marché, Renens Le 27 avril 2013 dès 09h30, la Ville de Renens lance les animations musicales du marché du samedi avec la formation de jazzSwiss TriBe. A cette occasion, l ECAL présentera exceptionnellement son stand «ECAL Terroir», résultat d un travail surprenant entre étudiants en Master Design de Produit et artisans vaudois. La Ville de Renens et l ECAL sont heureux de s associer lors de la reprise des animations musicales du marché du samedi en présentant de façon exceptionnelle le stand aux couleurs de «ECAL Terroir». Quelque 15 produits ont été ainsi revisités par 16 étudiants de première année du Master Design de Produit. Les étudiants de 7 nationalités différentes sont partis à la découverte des artisans de la région et ont élaboré de nouveaux articles. Les résultats de ces rencontres sont détonants: bricelets provençaux, pâté au fromage de chèvre ou encore sushi de chocolat. Supervisés par le designer et responsable du programme Augustin Scott de Martinville, les étudiants de première année ont pu découvrir lors de cette démarche les savoir-faire de la région et se familiariser avec l exercice de la production en petite série. Ils vendront ainsi des produits du terroir revisités dans leur présentation et leurs emballages dans un stand spécialement conçu en collaboration avec les étudiants du Master Espaces et Communication de la HEAD Genève sous la conduite du designer Adrien Rovero. Junk Museum,19.04–08.05.2013,Hall Kudelski, ECAL Junk Museum From April 22nd to May 8th (opening on friday April 19th at 6pm), ECALl/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne presents at ECAL (Hall Kudelski) the exhibit “Junk Museum” put together by students from the Bachelor of Photography, following a workshop with Thomas Mailaender. Transform five tons of junk into images! This was the challenge set forward by french photographer Thomas Mailaender during a two week workshop undertaken by 28 students from the second year Bachelor of Photography headed by Milo Keller. By means of cut, superimposed, hung and projected images, the challenge not only allowed the students to get familiar with the art of scenography and installation but also to introduce a perhaps unexplored domain like sculpture. “This is not an ordinary exhibit but a collective effort embodied by a interactive and photographic 400 square meter sculpture-terrain built on multiple layers in a huge box. This genuine invitation for the visitor to experiment is also a wonderful container to showcase the students work”, explains Thomas Mailaender. Atrocity Exhibition John Graham Ballard s literary technique influenced by Surrealism, his explicit or indirect references to artworks or artpractices and the relationships the author had with the british Pop artists attest that The Atrocity Exhibition has an affinity with the discipline of contemporary art. The aim of this research project was to design the parameters of an exhibition dedicated to The Atrocity Exhibition. The student-researchers inquired into the status of exhibitions - such as documentary, historical or thematical – and into more recent experimental displays. They decided to conceive an exhibition that articulated documentary restitution and creation. The few selected documents were used to blur the notions of context and reference in order to echo with the ambiguous media criticism in Ballard s work. The display structure created for the exhibition points towards devices as eclectic as contemporary commercial fairs, world s fairs or  the Independent Group s Pavilions, in an elliptic and entropic gesture involving oblivion, decay, mutation and sedimentation. A book gathers all the lectures by invited experts, the interventions by the professors and the results of the sudents research in the conception of this exhibition. ECAL and zai at blickfang Zurich,23–25.11.2012,Blickfang, Zurich On the occasion of blickfang Zurich (23-25 November 2012), the students of the Master of Advanced Studies in Luxury Industry and Design at the ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne present objects realized in collaboration with zai, a Swiss manufacturer of skis based in Disentis (GR). These projects have been developed through a workshop with the British designer Alexander Taylor. The four projects, presented as prototypes, have been developed from a series of tough specifications set by the Swiss company. The challenge was to create highly functional objects such as snow shoes or tools while using, if possible, leftovers from the zai ski production.The results embody the no-compromise approach of the company and some are bound to become products in the near future. Essenz snowshoes Romain Deleury & Emelie Lundquist Made from punched and folded aluminum sheets, the Essenz snowshoes are extremely light. In-depth research was performed, many mock-ups were built, and during the process “test and trial” proved crucial. We studied different methods to treat the metal to make it as light and resistant as possible. The choice of material for the Essenz snowshoes was aluminium, a material that was often associated with Swiss expertise, to the point that it was nicknamed “Swiss gold” in the 50 s. The body consists of sheets that have been folded, pierced and punched to give lightness in addition to enhanced rigidity. The two side parts are made of steel to hold the binding and are riveted together with the front part of the shoe. The aluminium surfaces are anodised black, hardening the aluminium and protecting against corrosion. Core axe Kacper Hamilton The Core axe consists of a helve and two interchangeable heads. The straight shaft helve re- sembles a tomahawk, made from a sandwich of zaiìra® and ash wood. The layering construction is inspired by zai s process and philosophy of making skis using raw and contrasting materials. The helve has been refined to be slim and lightweight; thereby generating greater striking momentum and more efficiency when cutting or splitting wood. The heads are made from forged high carbon steel. They can be changed using the integrated quick release system; this allows for secure head attachment, easier sharpening and safer transportation. Each head has a different function, one is for felling trees and the other for splitting logs of wood. Higo knife & tool Kacper Hamilton The Higo collection is influenced by the traditional Japanese ‘Higonokami knife. The Higo tool contains two essential screwdriver heads for adjusting ski bindings, whilst the Higo knife contains a short robust blade. The slim profile of these accessories gives extra safety when carried close to the body whilst skiing. The Higo collection are one handed operational devices. They can be easily opened, locked and closed; providing utmost efficiency in mountain conditions. Both have an automatic locking mechanism, ensuring that they are always safely stored and handled. The unibody of each object is machined out of a single piece of aluminium, therefore making it strong and durable. Rope tool Léo Rodriguez During the visit of the zai factory we disco­vered their universe which I really liked. The rough aspect of their skis and search for extreme efficiency inspired me for my project. One thing that caught my attention is the fact that they were always car­rying the screwdriver in their ski shoes to avoid injuries while skiing. I then decided to make a set of retractable tools using the same components as you can find in their skis. ECAL/Lantal: Fabric of Light,27.10–01.12.2012,Lantal, Melchnau Lantal is opening the “Fabric of Light” exhibition. It showcases imaginary and interactive installations with glimpses of the future in textile design. The exhibition was conceived and implemented by students enrolled in the Media & Interaction Design course of the ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne. Last year, when Lantal celebrated its 125th anniversary, it portrayed the company s success story in an exhibition for its employees and the local population. Lantal s apprentices developed “Phantasia”, their own future vision project, for that event. “The idea of offering youngsters a platform for their perspectives of the future should live on,” says Lantal s CEO Urs Rickenbacher. This was the point of departure for the collaborative venture with the ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne. A year ago, students in the bachelor degree course Media & Interaction Design got involved in “The Future of Textile Design” as a keynote topic. “We were given free rein, and the only requirement was to instill educational value in the project,” confirmed Alain Bellet, Head of ECAL s bachelor program in Media & Interaction Design, when he described the scope of artistic liberty. The students researched, developed concepts and prototypes, and implemented the entire exhibition as it stands. Alain Bellet characterized the challenge confronting the project supervisors as follows: “Because we are not experts in textile materials, we felt like voyagers on an expedition in search of the future of textile design. We asked ourselves how textiles might be perceived in the future and developed imaginary scenarios of what we saw.” Visitors who tour the “Fabric of Light” exhibition can experience the students discoveries in various interactive installations. When textiles, the imagination, and multimedia effects interface, perception rises to a new level that makes the future come alive. Including its debut day on October 27, the exhibition is open every Saturday in November and on December 1 from 2 to 5 pm at Fabrikraum 5 on Berghofstrasse 1 in Melchnau. Fabrikraum 5 The former production room on Berghofstrasse 1 in Melchnau has been used as a venue for art shows and encounters since 2008. Past exhibitions featured artists Schang Hutter and Pierre Casé. The private collection of Urs and Renata Baumann as well as Lantal s 125th anniversary retrospective were made accessible to the public in this hall. On Tour On the occasion of the 2010 editions of the Tour de Romandie and Tour de Suisse, the ECAL has made a photographic and editorial project about competitive cycling. Conducted in collaboration with La Vaudoise Assurances and Les Editions Infolio "On Tour" was primarily to explore the forms of convergence between creative photography, sports sponsorship and the world of publishing. Students in photography, under the direction of their teachers, were immersed in the world of Tours to produce views likely to exceed the stereotypes usually associated with this type of sport s events. According to their sensitivities, they were especially encouraged to inspire from innovative approaches offered by a growing number of contemporary photographers. In parallel with this prospective approach in terms of artistic and documentary photography, the goal was also to take account of recent redefinitions in the field of branding and communication and to generate original contributions, interviews and essays, on this issue. The results of this project are multiple: Production of an archive of thousands of images. Boris Meister – Above the Cloud Above the Cloud is an atlas about archeology on the social networks, death and digital marks left in distress on the internet. “I try to serve this complex subject and, above all, to explain it by creating a coherent object, both in its structure, its images and its layout. I play with the general idea of the atlas and I use different languages (associations of images, illustrations, data visualisation) to create an "atmosphere" favorable to the understanding of the subject, and, in the end, make a book "object" which might have several levels of interpretation. This is a work of graphic design, art direction, editorial research and a statement of my opinion on the status of the printed book. By providing special care to the finish of the object and its materiality (a cover made of glass, mixed paper, ...) I would like to create something simple but captivating and intriguing. Silke Koeck – Olympic Dance “Being interested in the analysis of body language, I realised that dance expresses this topic in a very open and free way. At the same time I became fascinated by the spirit of the Olympic Games and decided to create a choreography as a celebration. While any language acts as a code that is interpreted by people, I created codes for the choreography and the space. The dance integrates intimate and familiar information about the Olympic Games and turns it into visible movement, static positions and coordinations in space. The book consists of a combination of illustrations, written instructions and pictures that make this a guidebook for the dance. The dance integrates intimate and familiar information about the Olympic Games and turns it into visible movement, static positions and coordinations in space. The book consists of a combination of illustrations, written instructions and pictures that make this a guidebook for the dance. Louisa Gagliardi – Sion: microcosme, systèmes d influences Sion, capital city of Valais is a small town with 30,000 inhabitants. Despite its size, the art scene is very prolific. Artists, museums, galleries, auctions, monuments, studios and residencies, all the institutions are in place. Add to that the mountains, soccer clubs, wine makers, banks, politicians and superstars and you ll get a very original artstic scenery. The aim of this book is to show how such a place works, with influences systems, networking, alliances, sponsorship, cronyism and so on… Whereas the past 4 years have given me all the tools to realise a coherent book graphic design-wise, this work also allies serious research with a strong content which, to me, was still something to achieve. Having spent the first 20 years of my life in Sion, with an artist mother and an architect father, I allow myself a sometimes acid, sometimes fun commentary on a small but very proud art scene. Julien Mercier – Made in Switzerland in China After discovering the existence of a replica of the village of Interlaken in China, I decided to go on site to document a phenomenon: the copy of Swiss (and extensively occidental) culture. Located in the middle of the mountains, one premise appeared: every single detail there was to see, from the Alphorn statues to the pigeons were the results of an intelligent, total design. In parallel, I decided to talk about the copy and this village immersively, adopting some similar processes and using Chinese means of production. A font was produced, hand copied by a Chinese copy artist, before being redigitsed, in order to obtain the copy of a classic Swiss font, whose shapes were renewed by this particular creative process. It finally takes the form of a book as well as an installation, showing the original outputs and documenting the whole process, many of which having involved a third party. Every one of these constitutive elements and the reason for their presence have a lot to do with the way they were produced. Gaudopolis Project

Evelyn Schellenberg – Gaudopolis Gaudopolis is a fictional country where everything is based on the shape of a hexagon. Without showing it explicitly, I make the reader imagine what this country could look like, where it could be or how living there would feel like. The imagery is mostly very simple vector drawings leaving enough room for the beholder s imagination. Almost every aspect of Gaudopolis is regulated and all succumbs to a greater whole. Using the example of ants and bees, a society can only flourish if everything is completely structured and ordered. However, my proposition does not imply any affiliation to whatever side of the political spectrum; except that Gaudopolis is a constitutional monarchy. This project taught me that as a graphic designer we can steer the reader or the observer in any direction we want. We are able to manipulate. For me this aspect of graphic design was very intriguing. In combination with certain images the story forms automatically inside our head and we make associations due to our common way of thinking. Parkin Not Dal Mot

Anna Schudel – Parkin Not Dal Mot In the Swiss Alps, far away in the lower Engadine, there is an arcane garden which is home to many peculiar installations produced by Swiss artist Not Vital. Lying on a steep ground its nature is primal and raw, yet has a taste of enchanted romance. Entering the park is like stepping through a gate that separates the rational from the surreal. This particular nature, combined with the architectural sculptures, gives the visitor a fevered, dreamlike experience. The editorial project transcribes this place into an object, which allows the reader to make a virtual visit.  Parkin Not dal Mot  consists of a story book with local tales and lyrics of cultural value and a smaller guide presenting the artwork and the garden. Furthermore, it refers to its strong themes - art, surrealism, momentariness, nostalgia and the force of nature. It is my personal interpretation of Parkin Not dal Mot and a wish to share it with others. Chloé Tun Tun – Last Time Burma “Being the daughter of a Burmese father and having lived in Myanmar, the idea of exploring this side of my identity, and travelling to Myanmar felt like a necessity. When I arrived I felt like I wasn t part of the culture as much as I thought. In contrast to this I felt very comfortable with my surroundings, which made everything feel strange yet familiar at the same time. I decided to use this feeling as the main structure for this project. When I arrived back in Switzerland, I split the photos into two parts, I used installation to create an atmosphere that could translate how the mystical and the mysterious aspects of the country marked my understanding, and my way of seeing and taking photographs. For the second half of the project I decided to create a book. I tried to make this as honestly as possible in the hope of creating an intimate relationship between the country and myself as well as providing the reader with an insight into who I am. It has been an important insight into my life, enabling me to answer many questions in regard to my identity and my work.“

Jennifer Niederhauser Schlup – La Vallée “My project has for theme the Vallée de Joux and its relationship with the watch industry. I have photographed the various aspects of the place, showing them from an unusual perspective. The photographs are manipulated, retouched and set up in order to create a fabricated reality and disturb the spectator. Presented along with a display, this project takes the form of a book. The whole becomes a fictional study. The hardest for me was to meet the inhabitants, the Combiers. My personal approach of the subject has allowed me to improve my technical skills. Some images required a particular setup.
