Clio Hadjigeorgiou – Κυπριώτικο Σκετς / [kipri otiko skets] / Cypriot Sketch Cypriot dialect was first broadcast in the media through radio in 1950. Via three stories by Andreas Koukkides, Cypriot Sketch highlights some cultural and linguistic elements of Cypriot dialect. The language barrier is no longer an obstacle but a communication challenge. Compound words, proverbs and phrases are translated visually and in a playful manner. Considerable linguistic borrowing happened as a glossary of loanwords shows at the end of the book; the words are all taken from the transcribed stories and are translated into the related languages of the dialect. Thomas Prost – From Public to Public From Public to Public is a research project that explores how public debates are communicated. With the advent of communication tools, the number of actors taking part in these debates has increased. Because of its media coverage, I chose the theme of climate change and compared a scientific report to a citizen manifesto in an edition. This book is composed of 4 different analyses and studies the construction of these 2 texts. This research is complemented by a browser plug-in, which serves as a tool for the reader to continue these analyses. Aesthetics of Sustainability Aesthetics of Sustainability aims to explore and define the aesthetics of a new generation of sustainable materials. Sustainability is one of the most important topics of the 21st century. Design, as a discipline of innovation, must play a leading role in optimising the environmental impact of all by-products and processes in the production of designed goods. All too often, most people take a stereotypical view of “sustainable products”. They are often associated with dirty colours and unpleasant aesthetics, owing to the use of second-grade, recycled, “primitive”, natural or non-processed materials. Furthermore, they are usually associated with higher prices or inferior quality. Aesthetics of Sustainability aims to explore and define the aesthetics of a new generation of sustainable materials. The goals of the project are to push boundaries, explore aesthetics and define a contemporary language of sustainable materials and products through a systematic process of investigation, experimentation, creation and development within the context of product design. The low impact of products is not only necessary, but it is also about to become a unique selling point for manufacturers. The tipping point when eco-friendly materials become more easily available and financially competitive on a larger scale will soon be reached. The outcome of the project is a series of 14 dossiers on the explored materials as well as mock-ups and prototypes of the resulting products. The project offers a future generation of designers an array of operational tools and knowledge which explain how to discover, analyse and process seminal materials, how to work best with their qualities and how to turn them into functional yet aesthetically intriguing objects.Main applicant sECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne (project leader)Research team (senior researcher) (professor) (professor) (research assistant) (research assistant) (photographer) (photographer)Visiting lecturersYves Corminboeuf, Alexandre Echasseriau, Adam Fairweather, Beat Karrer, Chris Lefteri, Yves Leterrier, Mieke Meijer, Axel Norlander, Martin PostlerStudents1st-year MA students in Product Design, ECAL, class of 2018-2019: , , , , , , , ,, , , , , Periodseptember 2017 – july 2019Supported byECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne Strategic fund of the University of Applied Sciences Western Switzerland (HES-SO RCDAV)DisseminationPublication Thilo Alex Brunner, Aesthetics of sustainability. Opening: Every day, from 10am to 6pm Vitra Design Museum Charles-Eames-Str. 2 D-79576 Weil am Rhein www.design-museum.de In partnership with the 3D printing company Formlabs, ECAL Master Product Design students present a range of innovative everyday life objects, produced through a print farm within the exhibition and sold directly on site. Projects from ECAL faculty and alumni are also available. The concept was imagined by Camille Blin, head of the Master Product Design, and Christophe Guberan, ECAL tutor. HD Images Brochure with explanations ECAL has turned Spazio Orso 16, a 17th century Milanese palazzo, into a contemporary production site and retail shop inspired by a new vision of digital manufacturing. Lately, most of the product design research into 3D printing has been focusing on new technologies and the shapes they can generate. The idea of this project is to present digital manufacturing as an industrial production tool thanks to a print farm composed of numerous machines printing the same pieces simultaneously. “ECAL Digital Market” offers functional and well-designed everyday objects, created by Master Product Design students as well as by a selection of ECAL-related designers (faculty members and alumni). The project looks into the possibilities of production on demand. It examines the changing environment of manufacturing processes, it emphasizes how fast and transparent today s design industry could become, and experiments with new design details that are too intricate to achieve with traditional manufacturing techniques. Finally, “ECAL Digital Market” highlights the role of the designer in this new production cycle. Thanks to the 3D printers and know-how provided by Formlabs, a large variety of objects such as combs, tape dispensers, mechanical pencils, shoehorns, coat hooks, scissors, spinning tops, shelves and many more are produced and sold on site by the students. ECAL x MacGuffin,02–26.05.2019,Arles + Istanbul Biennial Design "A School of Schools: Design as Learning" is a multi-platform knowledge-based exhibition that uses, tests, and revises a variety of educational strategies UPDATE: "A School of Schools: Design as Learning" is a multi-platform knowledge-based exhibition that uses, tests, and revises a variety of educational strategies. Curated by Jan Boelen — co-founding artistic director of the research program Atelier Luma — with Vera Sacchetti and Nadine Botha for the 4th Istanbul Design Biennial, organised by the Istanbul Foundation for Cultureand Arts, it presents the work of over 90 artists and designers from around the world. Among these, ECAL presents "ECAL x MacGuffin (read below). A School of Schools is presented at Luma Arles as part of the Guest Program of Luma Days #3,a yearly forum of art and ideas, which takes place in Arles from May 22to 25, 2019, and presents public events, conferences, professional workshops, displays and art installations. This year, the topic of the forum is: “TOGETHER, a declaration of inter- dependence”. From 02/05/2019 to 26/05/2019 Parc des Ateliers, 45 chemin des Minimes, 13200 Arles, France www.luma-arles.org/fr/articles/school-of-schools Can a magazine be a design school? Or a design school a magazine? This autumn, MacGuffin and Swiss art and design school ECAL present the results of their collaboration during the 4th Istanbul Design Biennial, which is all about design as learning, and learning as design. The exhibition explores the ways in which the two can enrich the other. Last autumn, Dutch product designer Chris Kabel tutored Bachelor Industrial Design students at ECAL in collaboration with design magazine MacGuffin. The students used the magazine s editorial model as a methodology to study the use of everyday things and to design objects derived from them. They modelled their approach on the way the magazine themes its issues, and chose MacGuffins like The Roof, The Shade, The Wheel, The Ruler, The Lock and The Socle as the focus of their investigations. Their research resulted in a range of observational studies, contextual reportages and visual essays on the materiality of the objects, to be used as a basis for designing new objects. The outcome is an exciting collection of narratives and objects that explore The Life of Things, presented in the form of a 3D magazine. From Umbrella Stories and Wheel Stoppers to Real-Life Rulers and a platform for the Bottom of Things. 22 September – 4 November 2018. "U-Joints" exhibition,01–29.05.2019,Gallery l elac Curated by Andrea Caputo and Anniina Koivu, the "U-Joints" exhibition features the first chapter of an ongoing research initiated on the occasion of the Milan Design Week 2018. A large selection of nails, screws, rivets, bolts and nuts is shown alongside products created by international designers and a new taxonomy of basic fasteners, graphically developed by Graphic Thought Facility. Opening reception 1.05.2019, 18 h – 20 h Dates 2.05.2019 – 29.05.2019 Wednesday – Friday 13 h – 17 h Galerie l elac 5, avenue du Temple CH-1020 Renens IMAGES HD U-Joints is a research project led by Andrea Caputo and Anniina Koivu, as well as a group exhibition that explores the idea of connections in design.Initiated on the occasion of the Milan Design Week 2018, the first U-Joints exhibition was an eclectic introduction to the topic of connections. Taking a look at the multifaceted world of joints, curators Andrea Caputo and Anniina Koivu broke joints open, organised them by material and production processes, reassembled them into prototypes, and used them in real-world applications. For eight days, U-Joints brought together 919 pieces – from the most common joints to design s most innovative ones, as well as those that have had the greatest influence on contemporary design. This captivating introduction launched the U-Joints research project, which is now in the process of investigating different kinds of connections even more deeply. Ultimately, the research project s findings will be published in a large volume that examines joinery in furniture and product design. U-Joints takes a comprehensive and interdisciplinary approach. Featuring technical information about joinery as well as stories and commentaries, U-Joints looks at human history through its details, and invites us to see our built environment in whole new ways. The ongoing U-Joints research is accompanied by a series of exhibitions. Each show reads like a chapter of the future book. The first chapter in this series is the current U-Joints exhibition at Galerie l elac at ECAL/University of Art & Design Lausanne. Dedicated to very basic fasteners, the exhibition features a large selection of nails, screws, rivets, bolts and nuts, alongside products created by 20 international designers and a new taxonomy diagram created just for U-Joints. Andrea Caputo says: “Within the world of ‘connections we imagine including any field of investigation, from architecture to product design to fashion. It is an extremely scalable concept, and we aim to investigate not only the fundamental constructive principles but also to conduct methodological analysis. The manufacture of the joint can coincide with an industrial, artisanal or extremely extemporaneous and experimental process.” Anniina Koivu says: “Designers appropriate standard connectors; they assemble and personalise them. Sometimes, they invent new joinery from scratch. Always, they use joints to create unique objects. But because a joint is often invisible, hidden elegantly inside an object, it can pass by unnoticed. U-Joints seeks to change this.” The Taxonomy of Joints Taxonomy is the science of describing, identifying, naming and classifying organisms. The Taxonomy of Joints traces the macrocosm of joinery in furniture and product design today. Starting from the most common production techniques, the structure creates a genealogical tree that is divided into four families, twenty subfamilies and a still-to-be-defined number of individual joints. The taxonomy exhibited here looks at basic fasteners: nails, screws, rivets, bolts and nuts, in 192 of their most common examples. Much like that of an organism, The Taxonomy of Joints can grow or change its form: it is a work in progress. The taxonomy on display was graphically developed by British studio Graphic Thought Facility. ECAL Milano 2019: Objects for Nomadic Life by ECAL/Sebastian Maluska,09–14.04.2019,SaloneSatellite, Rho Sebastian Maluska, ECAL Master Product Design graduate (2018), presents three outdoor projects related to a nomadic lifestyle, including camping and travelling. HD Images “Nest” is a low-profile car volume extension, acting as a tent and storage space. Inspired by the sailing world and its technology, it is made up of two frames covered with waterproof sailing fabric. Once it opens up, “Nest” provides sheltered sleeping space for two people. While driving, sport equipment, such as surfboards or skis, can be stored on top or inside of “Nest” between the two fabric layers. Modern mountaineers travel as fast and light as possible, trying out new routes and pushing the boundaries of distance and time. They are never assured of being able to make it home before dark or of getting to the next safe spot before the weather changes. Naturally, a backup option becomes an essential part of your kit. This backup comes in the shape of an “Odon” backpack, essentially a hyper-light shelter solution. This shelter is so light that it can always remain attached to your daypack. “TRS 1” is a trail running shoe with a replaceable outsole. This lets users personalise their own trail running shoes. ECAL showcases “Ring my Bell”, an offbeat collection of interactive doorbells, while the EPFL+ECAL Lab unleashes the potential of Virtual Reality with “Hands on Vision”. Ring my Bell www.ecal-ringmybell.ch HD Images Brochure with explanations Video on vimeo DONG! TRRRRRR! Or maybe even GLING! Or BLING!, MHHHH! And sometimes even BRAOUM! ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne presents an offbeat collection of interactive doorbells developed by first-year Bachelor Industrial Design students, under the joint guidance of Stéphane Halmaï-Voisard, Head of Bachelor Industrial Design, and Mathieu Rivier, a Bachelor Media & Interaction Design graduate. This project is part of the “Sound & Vision” exhibition, shown for the first time, in collaboration with EPFL+ECAL Lab, at the 2019 Milan International Furniture Fair. Sound and object design are two notions that industrial designers rarely have the opportunity to combine. Nevertheless, most everyday objects potentially produce sounds. Just pull up a chair, open or close a drawer or even flip a switch and you will create sound. What do all these actions have in common? Movement, friction and interaction which draw on the basic laws of physics to create tones. With this in mind, the students have offered a fresh and original take on an everyday object, one that is unremarkable yet never silent—the doorbell. They have designed a range of mechanical and electrical doorbells that offer a unique, sometimes even thunderous, sound experience. Well-known chimes step aside and are replaced by a curious metallophone triggered by a punch card reminiscent of traditional mechanical music boxes. The former door knocker is now amplified by a vibrant dong! The familiar buzzer has been replaced by an energetic drum roll. The everyday doorbell has been replaced by a curious device that makes a sound like thunder. At last, where you might expect a ding-dong, there is now a stertorous mooing mhhhh! These are just some of the contraptions displayed. Come in and ring! Hands on Vision In the “Sound & Vision” exhibition, the EPFL+ECAL Lab takes you to others worlds with “Hands on Vision”. The immersion turns into a sensory, social and nomadic experience. The design research shapes a new future for immersion and mobility. Six installations demonstrate how objects bring new life to virtual content, – in the company of celebrities such as singer, Nina Simone, and designer, Roger Tallon. Ring My Bell DONG! Sound and object design are two notions that industrial designers rarely have the opportunity to associate. However, most common objects potentially produce sounds. All you have to do is pull a chair, open and close a drawer or press a switch to generate sound. Common factors: movement, friction and interaction, which allow basic physics processes to create tones. In this perspective, the students offered a fresh and original look at an ordinary object, often invisible, but never discreet: the doorbell. Whether mechanical or electrical, the bells they have invented reveal a unique, sometimes even thundering, sound experience. Here, the classic carillon gives way to a curious metallophone powered by a perforated card reminiscent of traditional mechanical music boxes. The old door knocker is exchanged for a vibrating dong! The familiar buzzer is replaced by an efficient drum roll. The usual bell replaces a strange device that makes a great sound. Finally, the usual ding-dong is swapped for a resounding mhhhhh ! dear to the bovine race, to name but a few of the devices presented. Come in and ring the bell! www.ecal-ringmybell.ch

Workshop Renate Buser For a week, the Swiss artist Renate Buser led a workshop with students in first year Bachelor Photography. The ECAL building, a former factory converted into an art school in 2006 by architect Bernhard Tschumi, was the starting point for their photographic explorations. The rules of the game: two black and white films per student and darkroom prints that helped define the initial framework. By taking advantage of the constraints, the varied results illustrate the creativity of the students who experiment with options in shooting, drawing and installation. Constellations Constellations is a one-week workshop held by Béatrice Lartigue for the first year Bachelor M&ID students in November 2018. The idea behind the workshop is to explore the invisible physical process of electrical conduction. Using Touchboards, students explored different ways of giving form to this idea of electrical conduction by creating diverse projects using sound, video projection and/or installation. MIDI Box MIDI Box is a Touchboard based MIDI controller that allows you to manually play back and create sequences for different virtual instruments. Workshop Antony Cairns For one week Ecals bachelor students had the chance to work with photographer and artist Antony Cairns. The workshops aim was to investigate a variety of processes within the history of photography. Since the invention of the medium, photography has shared a close relationship with technology. Students had the chance to explore a range of forgotten techniques and machines to create artworks around the theme of time while researching its connection to other art pieces, films, books, and images that shared the same theme. Cairns practice has been hugely inspired by cyberpunk science fiction and Futurology. These subject matters led him to explore new ways to interpret the photographic medium. Benjamin Bucher – Hunters Two men in their sixties spend day and night in a camper. They hunt meteorological balloons coming down to earth. These objects don t have a value for the scientists anymore, but do become the reason for a treasure hunt. Documentary / 17min Synopsis Two men in their sixties spend day and night in a camper. They hunt meteorological balloons coming down to earth. These objects don t have a value for the scientists anymore, but do become the reason for a treasure hunt. For my documentary film "Hunters" I had the pleasure to meet two men with an adventurous spirit. They share a peculiar activity that depends on wind. I sometimes had the impression to film grown children. Comment The three hunters of... "hunters" don t have guns but they take us on a poetic journey to hunt the weather probe! Benjmain Bucher follows them in their absurd, harmless and good-natured quest. He offers us a film outside of the economy, a stroll off the beaten path, a short moment of pure gratuity. And it is precious. Annette Dutertre / Editor, head of the Editing Department at La Fémis

Garage At the edge of a rail traffic, in an abandoned garage four people of different backgrounds live in a perfect harmony. Fiction / 20 min Synopsis Milda is a young lituanian dancer. She lives in a garage with three roommates. Even though they all have different backgrounds, it seems like they really found each other well and live in a perfect harmony. One night, some freaking noises wake them up : constructions works have started on the railway, just next to them. Those sounds announce the very near demolition of their home. From then, Milda, Alan, Nadine and Selena try to forget that their life togeter is about to end. Comment The film Garage, by Lorraine, and edited by Brandon Beytrison, seems to me to be emblematic of what the journey of an edit is. The first cut was far from the final film... Out of fear of boring the spectator, of assuming her scenario, Lorraine had artificially stretched the story and, in doing so, killed the very idea of her film! Dryness of the scenes, imbalance between the characters, mechanical rhythm, etc. Lorraine couldn t see her dailies anymore and Brandon was limited to pacing, for lack of direction. So we went back to the dailies to find Lorraine s original intentions, and they were there! It was a matter of finding the heart of the scenes, of redeploying them around the details that Lorraine had so meticulously put in place during the shooting and of giving back its soul to the film. Brandon then became a real force of proposal! The rest is up to them, and from the second cut, the film was there, obvious, in place. From that moment on, their collaboration was able to work fully to achieve the film you are about to see! Fabrice Rouaud / Editor

Antoine Flahaut – Wasteland Jérôme has failed his High-School leaving exams. He spend the day with his best friend, David before to go to a party. Fiction / 18 min Synopsis Jérôme has failed his High-School leaving exams. His best friend, David, has passed his exams and is getting ready to leave. They spend the day hanging out around their village, where they know every nook and cranny, and in the evening go to a party with their old schoolmates... Summer is just beginning but their friendship seems doomed to end. Comment Antoine Flahaut was to write a feature film script to conclude his studies at ECAL. His preliminary documentation work soon took on the scope of a gigantic research project, commensurate with the ambition of the project. By telling the story of a young man from a working class family in Montbéliard in the spring of 1968, Antoine was indeed proposing to resurrect a world. Wasteland is a gesture. An almost improvised short film, faithful in the background to the scenario of the feature film, but which also frees itself from it to better reconnect with the original inspiration of its author. A series of sensitive and fragile moments that reveal a soul, that of a boy on the border between childhood and manhood. A poem of vertigo in the face of the opacity of life, between nostalgia and the call of the sea, between early disenchantment and great hopes. Emmanuel Salinger / Actor, screenwriter, director

Lour Rambert Preiss – Stone Age In a vast stone quarry, an explosion reveals an object from the past. Fiction / 22 min Synopsis A great rock quarry today. Antonin, 27, discovers a face in the rock after an explosion. We shut down the sector, the company is stormed by mysterious scientists. During free time, we speculate on the origin of the face... Antonin s obsession grows. Comment Lou s film asked essential questions to him: to represent or not to represent? To put in form, at what point? The film is inscribed on this fine border, where our imaginations as spectators can be engulfed if we are not forbidden to enter by too many "pronouncements". Lou creates a space of cinema, situated between the spectator and the screen, in a dialogue oriented but not constrained. Thus, the film has the space to exist within us, and it succeeds in bringing to life the mystery it does not define. Each of the students, in his or her own place, has had to face these questions. And if Lionel Baier were Lao Tseu, he would tell them "The Tao that we try to grasp is not the Tao itself; the name we want to give it is not its proper name." Uh... Lou and his editor Gabrielle Stemmer knew how to play skillfully with duration and its variations, with the play of actors and non-actors together, with the relationships of scale (of space and time), with the interference of the supernatural... In short, Big, Small, Doubt... Bravo to him and his team. Alain Gomis / Director

Louis Hans-Moevi – Intercontinental Sarjo is fired from the laundry of a luxury hotel where he was working. At night, before leaving this place for good, he steals an access card and enters into the clients corridors of the building. Fiction / 20 min Synopsis As the funicular railway car Sarjo is sitting in climbs upwards, he looks down at the small town below and up at the mountains above. He works up there in the labyrinthine corridors of a luxury hotel, folding and ironing laundry. In the midst of the constant noise and churning of the washing machines, he is fired. But before Sarjo finally leaves the premises, he takes on a new identity, out of revenge or just total despair, and gets access to the lavish corridors reserved for guests.

Summer University Tehran Some thoughts and starting points for an art event about Ta ârof to be held at Bon Gah Thinking the interrelations within the art world, taking as a starting point an Iranian artist run space inviting a visiting Swiss art school wishing to understand (or underscore…) if and how Ta ârof may be of any help to try to build a temporary community, and make art. Drawing on some recent UN General Assembly speeches, that Trick or Treat is the ultimate geopolitical strategy tool, where USA is working towards a « more just and peaceful future ». Assuming that Switzerland is a neutral country and thereafter represents consular and diplomatic interests of USA in Iran. Taking in consideration that the art community doesn t differ from society in general: it is just a reductio ad absurdum. Artists tend to recognize each other globally, assuming some kind of moral superiority towards the rest of society, or at least pretending to understand the complex tissues of relationships and power relations that makes (and destroys) a community. But fundamentally there is almost no solidarity within the artists. Ta ârof continually questions hierarchy, be it the artist towards other artists, the artist towards the spectator and so on. Ta ârof plays the game of an ideal society, like art, where the artist is benevolent and humble towards the spectator. Ta ârof shows that every word always tends to have a hidden desire. Margaux Piette – Afterglow « Afterglow is about the phenomenon of beauty tutorials on social media. I obsessively collected screenshots from videos to make a book with the aim to highlight the frenzy and the eccentricity of these practices but also to move them out of their context in order to upgrade them to picture status and to put forward their pictorialness. As an answer to the phenomenon, I made a series of self-portraits. I used various processes, among them digital manipulation and I played at digitally deconstructing my face too. »

Anastasia Mityukova – Project Iceworm In 1959, the US Army built a military base under the Greenland ice cap to deploy missiles. Due to global warming, nuclear waste left behind after the base was abandoned is resurfacing, threatening the Thule Inuit ecosystem. This installation (a composition of cyanotypes, collages, archives, aerial views, video) and the book break down events and transgressions: a colonial attitude, destruction and pollution, showing an inaccessible and invisible reality.
