The Indecisive Moment Project
The Indecisive Moment

The Indecisive Moment This exhibition presents the outcome of a five-day workshop led by artist Jaya Pelupessy, where students explored the unstable terrain between creation and reproduction. Through hands-on experiments with various duplication methods and strategies of appropriation, the workshop invited a reconsideration of the image—not as a final product, but as a process, a question, a site of continuous transformation. Embracing moments of uncertainty, trial and error, and unexpected discovery, participants focused on what Pelupessy calls The Indecisive Moment: the in-between phase where outcomes are unclear and intention is disrupted by chance. These works reflect a shift from the pursuit of fixed meaning toward an image in flux—unfinished, open, and relational.

ECAL × SDOL, Horizon Ouest, Regards sur la métamorphose urbaine Project
ECAL × SDOL, Horizon Ouest, Regards sur la métamorphose urbaine

ECAL × SDOL, Horizon Ouest, Regards sur la métamorphose urbaine New transport infrastructure is emerging, while former industrial wastelands are giving way to modern buildings and redesigned outdoor spaces. Gradually, residents are moving into these new neighborhoods and adopting new habits.  To capture the first moments of life in these spaces, the association "Ouest lausannois: Prix Wakker 2011" has invited second-year students from the ECAL Bachelor of Photography program to observe them throughout 2024. This project highlights 18 ongoing construction sites or recently completed neighborhoods. Through their perspectives, the students offer original approaches to discovering, understanding, and appropriating these new spaces.  Photography maintains a unique relationship with the world around us, as it often depends on it. Far from merely documenting reality in a strict sense, it has the power to transfigure and reveal the invisible or the unspeakable. This is the approach adopted by the ECAL photography students at the request of the "Ouest lausannois: Prix Wakker 2011" association, as they explored various territories in western Lausanne. As part of this commission, each student was randomly assigned a specific location—be it a new neighborhood, a construction site, or a distinctive building—on which they worked over an academic year. Faced with spaces that were sometimes unphotogenic or even resistant to imagery, the challenge was to look beyond appearances, to resonate with these places in order to grasp their unique dynamics. The photographs question our perception of these recent landscapes and bear witness to the human activity unfolding within them. What do they reveal about our ways of living and moving? Who are the people inhabiting these spaces? What new landscapes emerge from these rapid transformations?  Through approaches that are sometimes sensitive and intimate, sometimes detached and analytical, or even driven by a formal fascination with the objects captured, the works presented reveal the density and diversity of everyday life. They bring forth a poetic vision of the city, inviting us to consider these territories not merely as functional backdrops but as fully-fledged spaces, rich with history, form, and identity—fluid and multifaceted, just like those who inhabit them.

Le livre d’artiste - 24/25 Project
Le livre d’artiste - 24/25

Le livre d artiste - 24/25 As part of the editorial design course led by Anouk Schneider and Nicolas Polli, second-year Visual Communication students had the opportunity to design an artist s book during the first semester. This book project stands out for its contemporary approach, aiming to create an editorial object that harmoniously integrates form and content within today s publishing landscape. Students were encouraged to fully embrace their artistic freedom at every stage of the creative process—whether in terms of format, paper choice, binding, layout, illustrations, text, or typography. Within this course, the artist s book can take shape through various modes of illustration, such as photography, reproduction, contextualization, drawing, 3D, and more. The emphasis is placed on the author s artistic vision and the means implemented to bring it to life. Students take on multiple roles as editor, curator, and architect, thereby covering the responsibilities of art director, designer, photographer, stylist, illustrator, typographer, editor-in-chief, and copy editor. This course highlights contemporary editorial design by exploring the narrative potential of a carefully constructed content sequence. ECAL Night Live Project
ECAL Night Live

ECAL Night Live During an intensive week, first-year students from the Visual Communication department at ECAL had the opportunity to create and produce the first edition of ECAL Night Live. The goal was to design a show inspired by satirical television formats. Divided into multidisciplinary teams—including students from the Bachelor programs in Graphic Design, Media & Interaction Design, and Photography—they collaborated to create all the content, set design, and visual identity of the show, delivering a fully homemade project in record time. The main theme revolved around self-mockery, targeting the visual communication professions, students, and the institution itself, with a subtle touch of current events. This project was supervised by Vincent Veillon and Paul Walther, directors of the RTS show 52 Minutes, as well as Florian Pittet, a digital scenography expert who guided the creation of the show s set design.

Applied Photography Project
Applied Photography

Applied Photography ZOOM IN ZOOM OUT This course, both practical and technical, required students to develop a true photographer s eye. Its goal was to introduce them to or help them refine their skills in various photographic genres, such as still life, portraiture, architecture, as well as documentary and staged photography. These disciplines demanded particular attention and great rigor in selecting models, locations, and objects. Mastery of composition, framing, and light management—whether natural or artificial—was essential for achieving successful shots. Throughout the course, students were encouraged to sharpen their sense of observation and their ability to create images that were both precise and expressive.

Fine Art Photography Project
Fine Art Photography

Fine Art Photography Vulgar First, it is photography that would be considered vulgar: due to its technical mediation (the infamous photographic click-clack), its commercial uses (press, advertising, and fashion), its dissemination, and its reproduction, photographic activity is tainted with vulgarity. A minor art, an art that does nothing more than imitate art?

La Mobilière 2025 Prize awarded to Alfatih Article
La Mobilière 2025 Prize awarded to Alfatih

La Mobilière 2025 Prize awarded to Alfatih Congratulations to ECAL graduate artist Alfatih, who was awarded the Prix La Mobilière 2025 at the recent Salon Art Genève. Born in 1995 and graduating from ECAL in 2018 with a Bachelor s degree in Media & Interaction Design, Alfatih, who lives and works in Lausanne, has been awarded the Prix La Mobilière 2025. Awarded each year, this prize is given to artists whose work is inspired by the issues facing our society, providing a basis for understanding our times. It is accompanied by financial support of CHF 30,000. Through his video installations and interactive works, the artist addresses the different developments in the virtual world and establishes links between fields that are still often considered to be opposed. He questions codes of understanding and their significance for society, while integrating them into the present, creating a space for diversity and pluralistic perspectives. ‘The apparent lightness of Alfatih s digital images transports us into stories in which reflections on certain periods of life, memory and death follow one another and intertwine, explains Nicolas Brulhart, artistic director of the Kunsthalle Friart in Fribourg, which nominated Alfatih for the Prix Mobilière 2025. @alfatiharufa alfatih.world

Dramatic portraiture Returning to the basics and origins of photography will allow students to focus their energy and ideas meaningfully on their concept and subject.   Louie Banks provided them with three keywords to consider as a way to create photographs with more impact than what is typically expected from today s editorials and campaigns. The students were free to draw inspiration from one of the following keywords or to try incorporating a bit of each into their project: "Movement," "Costume," "Emotion."

ECAL X KVADRAT - SUIT UP Project
ECAL X KVADRAT - SUIT UP

ECAL X KVADRAT - SUIT UP For this project, the students had to design a seat, or rather requalify and rehabilitate a chair or armchair using existing models such as the monobloc, aluminium bistro chair, or deck chair, as the base structure. Employing Kvadrat upholstery textiles, the designs had to be reversible, meaning it should not alter the existing structure. While the original function of the chair could be maintained or altered, the proposals aimed to improved the comfort and aesthetic character of the seats. RAVIOLI CHAIR by The entire project aims to enhance an affordable chair – the Transat – by bringing the chair, which is often associated with being "accessible, practical, for outdoor use," indoors and giving it a more unique and comfortable design. Using fabrics, padding materials, and a sewing machine, where technique plays a central role, the focus is on an intensive exploration of different ways to manipulate textiles in order to create an exceptional quilted pattern. The chair is completely covered, so the original shape disappears, and no association with the Transat can be made. The Transat is thus used as a framework to create a new indoor lounge chair. Some say that the best product [sustainability speaking] is the one that already exists. SUIT UP aimed to make us reflect on our relationship with furniture, the comfort it brings us and the legacy of upholstered furniture; to take a critical look at how these products are manufactured, distributed, enjoyed and discarded today. Following a selection of the projects.Strapp by Strapp utilizes the existing wooden frame of the deck chair to hold two sets of fabric loops tactfully sewn and interwoven with each other. "Strapp" can be mounted onto the chair frame during its assembly, thus becoming an integral part of the chair. The woven structure appears flat but adjusts comfortably to the person seated. The Strapp design was created to enhance the comfort of the deck chair. The material used is a cool wool upholstery fabric, making the seat soft and cozy. YUPPIE CHAIR by Yuppie Chair is a project aimed at creating a cover for the monobloc chair, thus transforming this outdoor chair into an indoor chair. The project draws more inspiration from the fashion world, as in its initial phase, it was oriented toward bridal gowns. The goal was to design a cover inspired by the yuppie style of the 1980s, using Kvadrat upholstery fabric. It was necessary to find a way to merge the language of fashion with furniture. The cinching detail evokes how tailored jackets are themselves cinched.Link by Link is a conference chair cover. Designed to instantly transform an aluminum chair into a comfortable, practical chair that can be connected to other chairs. A zipper linking the chairs allows them to be attached, providing safety and organization during gatherings at events.SIENNE by Sienne is a cover that easily fits over aluminum terrace chairs to transform them into indoor armchairs during the winter months. Thanks to two zippers, the cover can be adjusted to take shape. The edges fold over the sides, providing wide and comfortable armrests.VANO by Vano is a waterproof cover specifically designed to fit aluminum bistro-style chairs. Composed of two parts, it retains the stackability of the original chair while adding extra comfort. Terrace enthusiasts can once again enjoy the pleasure of savoring their drinks outdoors. The toggle buttons create an ingenious fastening system that gives the chair its enveloping appearance.

This unique event, initially created as a convivial occasion to encourage exchanges between students in the graphic design department, has rapidly developed into a high point of conviviality and creativity. VENUEHochschule für Gestaltung und Kunst Basel FHNW Freilager-Platz 1, 4142 Münchenstein b. BaselDATES & SCHEDULE04.10.2024 6:30pmWEBSITEagi-open.comLott of Prints was born of a week-long workshop led by , where a class was invited to design decorated, offset-printed lotto grids. At the end of the week, an original lotto took place, with prestigious graphic objects - posters, books, fanzines - as prizes for the winners. The enthusiasm generated by this initiative gave birth to this playful and artistic concept. This year, the AGI Open, a conference proposed by members of Alliance Graphique Internationale, will be held in Basel on October 3 and 4. The organizing committee, seduced by the Lott of Prints concept, asked the ECAL to organize the first extramural edition of this event. On October 4 at 6.30pm, join us at the Hochschule für Gestaltung und Kunst Basel (HGK) to try your luck at this new edition. The event will be hosted by a team of ECAL students and will feature exceptional prizes donated by AGI Suisse members, ECAL and several partner studios. BURNING CORSO - Thomas Mailaender Project
BURNING CORSO - Thomas Mailaender

BURNING CORSO - Thomas Mailaender In the spring of 2024, Thomas Mailaender and the students of the ECAL Bachelor in Photography entered the ruins of the club with the intention of making it resonate once again. Between archaeology, documentary research, and imaginative speculations, the group of adventurers crafted a surprising exhibition path blending mold and glitter, ashes and glamour. For one night, the Corso was filled with explosive sounds and images in a fiery tribute to the nights of Renens.

By delving into the material properties, history, symbolism, and multiple representations of an iconic object, they sought to understand the aura that defines it. The subject of this first edition? The blue jean. From a simple utilitarian garment to a global symbol of style, the blue jean transcends generations and cultures. Throughout the semester, students were tasked with creating a photographic project or video that both questions and celebrates this emblematic object.

The choice of discipline could be classic, out-of-games or even imaginary. The students worked around a certain vision of physical effort, movement, constraint, a form of discipline, or even joy.

TRANSLATION Project
TRANSLATION

TRANSLATION During the visual identity course, the 2nd year Graphic Design bachelors had to produce a communication project based on a translation. They had to define their own translation system and develop a visual language based on these rules. Mires Through my research into test patterns, my aim was to design and use test patterns that were truncated, whether by the printing technique or by their very design. These test patterns are intentionally designed to be altered and used in a way that reverses their original calibration function. By calibrating the camera with these test patterns, the resulting image suffers all the errors and imperfections induced. This research explores how calibration errors affect image quality, by manipulating parameters such as blur, overexposure and optical distortion.etic potential of technical errors in photography. Par BAD NOISE CLUB This project is a visual identity proposal for a fictitious electronic music club, inspired by the world of rave parties, techno clubs and the influence of the Roland TR-303 on this musical genre from the 90s to the present day. The visuals are the result of experimentation and research into the machine s technical characteristics. They translate live the modulation of sound and the way the instrument is used using VJing techniques. Par PIMP MY HOOK Fly fishing is a fishing method that uses lures made to imitate aquatic and terrestrial insects.  Using 3D, "PIMP MY HOOK" reproduces the translation phenomenon between the real insect and its imitation on a hook, just as an artificial fly tyer would do. Par Sounds of Things "Sounds of Things" is a visual identity that translates sound into images. It takes the form of an alphabet book in which the sound of each object creates an infographic form. In this way, a whole visual lexicon is created, moving from one sense (hearing) to another (vision). Par CORPS ET ÂMEA mixture of empirical data and concrete poetry, CORPS ET ÂMES translates my state of mind when I improvise in dance. From an internal point of view, this project illustrates the four criteria I use in my practice: speed, amplitude, height and intensity, as well as the thoughts that go through my head. A video illustrates the creative process, itself condensed into two posters featuring my personal video archives and the more abstract aspect of my movements.  The project is accompanied by a pack of cards for dancers who enjoy improvisation and challenges. Par Vallée du GottéronThis is the story of a river that runs aground at the foot of a town. This wild river has always fascinated the people of Fribourg, but it has also frightened them. Mixing reality and fiction, this project is a work of research into the translation of a place and its legends. Par

In Situ Project
In Situ

In Situ For this project, students were asked to design architectural interventions taking into account the characteristics of a precisely chosen location. They had to select an inspiring building in which to integrate their work, with a view to improving its functionality or protecting it from wear and tear. As part of this exercise, students were asked to act like "surgeons", adapting their projects to the "body" of the building, like prostheses. The projects had to be removable, with no permanent attachment to the site.

In the first season, with the complicity of Claude Emmanuelle Gajan Maull, the young photographers have fluidified the iconic bottles with their gendered silhouettes — Le Mâle, Le Classique, Le Beau and La Belle — in a fresh LGBTQIA+ perspective. With this upcoming season, the project evolves around the Scandal fragrance, with the creation of still lives in which the liquid, dry and organic contrasting textures evoke the essence of the perfume, its bottle design and its complexities. Through staging, the perfumes become the backdrop for stories of transgression and fantastical projections. Under Your Smell offers a hypnotic and immersive experience through monumental fabric prints all around the exhibition areas. Giant image-cushions welcome the public to lay down and celebrate gender fluidity and the ever changing definitions of beauty and self expression.RELATED EVENTS

CORSO – ECAL x Thomas Mailaender,23–24.05.2024,Ancienne Discothèque Corso Artist Thomas Mailaender and students from ECAL s Bachelor Photography program explore the ruins of Corso, a disused nightclub in downtown Renens, with the intention of reviving it. In 1992, an explosion put an abrupt end to Le Corso s activities. The building was demolished, and the remains of the nightclub have since slumbered in silence, darkness and humidity beneath the square laid out on its site. ECAL x FREITAG - Access over ownership Project
ECAL x FREITAG - Access over ownership

ECAL x FREITAG - Access over ownership Second-year industrial design students collaborated with Zurich-based brand FREITAG Lab, leveraging their expertise in environmental awareness, material upcycling, and the circular economy. Using the FREITAG manifesto as a foundation, they developed new shared products centered on the principle of "access over ownership." Under the direction of designer Christophe Guberan, students have explored various options for borrowable items. Particularly relevant for temporary-use clothing, accessories, and furniture, this approach enabled the young designers to benefit from FREITAG s expertise in circular economy, material upcycling, services, product development and disruptive innovation. “Design has the responsibility and power to make positive changes towards a circular future. We shared our know-how with the students to raise their awareness of this vision”, says FREITAG Circle Lead Product Design and Development Tu Van Giang. Seeking to fundamentally alter the consumer experience through product design itself, ECAL and FREITAG invite consumers to rethink their relationship with goods while adopting a more sustainable and conscious lifestyle.NEBULA by Disposable plastic ponchos are often used by tourists as a quick fix to stay warm and dry while travelling, but they are as quickly worn out as they are quickly discarded. Made from reclaimed B-grade car airbag textile, NEBULA is designed to replace single-use plastic ponchos. Designed to be as simple as possible to produce, one size fits all and easy to clean and maintain, without compromising on quality and comfort. The ponchos would be borrowed and returned to FREITAG stores, but could also be returned to hotels or mailboxes for convenient retrieval while travelling. Pairs stylishly with the FLAT BOOTS overshoes. FLAT BOOTS by , Most of us own rain boots that we only use a few days a year, according to the weather. FLAT BOOTS are waterproof overshoes that you can borrow for as long as you need them for those rainy days, outdoor activities, or if you ve forgotten your boots when you re on the road. The overshoe features a thermo-welded heavy-duty tarp upper and a rubber sole. Its unique split sole design allows the boots to be rolled up for easy storage and optimised production. Combined with the NEBULA poncho, they would keep you dry while you re out and about. PACK-A-ROOM by , & Thought for students who are most likely to move from one flat to another, study abroad for a semester or have an extra flatmate for a few months, PACK-A-ROOM is a collection of flatpack furniture that is easy to transport and assemble. Made from B-grade airbag and tarp, fitted on a frame made of standard pipes and robust Maker Pipe connectors; the use of modular and detachable connecting parts allows for durable, expandable systems and extends the life cycle of the furniture. Comprising a bed, wardrobe and chair, you would have everything you need to feel at home in just a few turns of hex key. FIESTA KIT by It s party time! You go to the corner shop to buy everything you need: disposable plates, disposable glasses, disposable napkins and, of course, decorations, garlands and disposable balloons, all of which will be thrown away at the end of the day. The FIESTA KIT offers an alternative to disposable garlands and balloons. Made from truck tarp off-cuts from FREITAG bag production, rolled up in a handy pouch, it is a unique and colourful decoration option for celebrating more consciously. F-BÖÖTLE by In Switzerland, river drifting is a popular activity for groups of friends and families. As soon as the temperatures rise, everyone grabs their paddles and pumps and drifts down the river in brightly-coloured rubber boats. Unfortunately, many of these inflatable boats are abandoned on the banks, sometimes after just one use. The problem has become so serious that some towns, like Bern, have taken action by installing massive permanent containers to help maintain the shores of the Aare river. The inflatable F-BÖÖTLE, made from a tractor inner tube combined with truck tarp and safety belts, offers a sustainable alternative for this summertime water adventure. Designed to be easily inflated and deflated, it can be effortlessly rolled up into a backpack for convenient carrying. AIRtube by Translating FREITAG s bag-making expertise to the furniture industry is perhaps a bit of a stretch. Applying its radical principles to furniture rental, however, makes perfect sense. AIRTUBE is an inflatable sofa system made from dead-stock tractor inner tubes and seatbelt webbing. One section of the sofa is made up of four inner tubes constrained and shaped by straps. Each element can accommodate two people and could be easily transported from a FREITAG store to wherever you need it. AIRTUBE is a sturdy, playful and comfy option for events, parties, indoors or out on a sunny day relaxing in a park. shift by When we move from one home to another, we consume a lot of items in a short space of time — cardboard boxes, bags, all sorts of tapes, bubble wrap, etc. — most of which end up in the rubbish or, at best, in a recycling bin. SHIFT is a reusable moving kit made up of a series of sturdy, box-shaped tarp bags ranging in size from 43L, 62L and 82L, plus a long, thin bag for all bulky items. You could borrow as many bags as you need from your local FREITAG store, for a carefree move.

Watches and Wonders Geneva 2024 ECAL x Alloyed

Watches and Wonders Geneva 2024 ECAL x Alloyed For the Watches and Wonders Geneva 2024 trade show, ECAL/University of Art and DesignLausanne has teamed up with Alloyed, a company that specialises in metal printingtechnologies, to present an original collection of watch straps. Designed by students in theMaster of Advanced Studies in Design for Luxury and Craftsmanship programme, thesewristbands have been developed using 3D modelling software, resulting in unique pieces thatgo beyond the limits of traditional techniques. Five of the 15 concepts designed by the students were selected and 3D printed from a finepowder of TI6AI4V titanium—an alloy composed of titanium, aluminium, and vanadium—whosemelting point of around 1,600° Celsius is obtained using a laser beam. Regularly used in theaerospace, and medical industries, this printing technique, known as Laser Powder BedFusion (L-PBF), can be used to create objects with ultra-high-performance mechanicalproperties. Each project, presented in the form of a prototype or animation, finds its inspiration in thebeauty of nature, through organic structures, as much as in complex systems, closer toengineering. This collaboration brings together technology, craftsmanship, and design—withlinks to the world of fine watchmaking—by combining the expertise of engineers specialising inthe science of materials, the know-how of artisan jewellers and their finishing skills, and thecreativity and innovative spirit of up-and-coming designers. Fiction film workshop with Carmen Jaquier Project
Fiction film workshop with Carmen Jaquier

Fiction film workshop with Carmen Jaquier The 2023 fiction film workshop for 2nd year students was lead by swiss director Carmen Jaquier. Head of workshop: "The initial proposal was to leave room for the students desires and quests, while offering a simple framework for the making of their second-year film. We worked from a single set, as vast as Michelangelo Frammartino s and the exhausted interior architecture of John Cassavetes characters. Together, we looked for simple, accessible, everyday ways of nurturing a story and characters. We wanted to capture gestures, ways of speaking, and significant details in people we know and don t know. We came up with "A Rock", a sort of collection of images, thoughts and interactions, with the idea of expanding the universe of the films. To avoid the black holes of writing, we set ourselves in action, in movement. We imagined the shoots as parties, and danced with Aurélien. Collages and skeletons invaded the white walls of the school, revealing the films to come. On the big screen, I watch, moved, two young brothers tearing themselves apart over a lie, three friends in a frenzy just before separation, a young man absorbed by his need for power, a friend giving in under the weight of the mountain, two sisters who have made a promise to each other, a son who summons his father s spirit through music, the love and death rites of a young kendoka, a group of girlfriends in search of an inner voice, and a fragmented young man, before the end of the world." Beyond Bézier. Explorations of drawing methods in type design Project
Beyond Bézier. Explorations of drawing methods in type design

Beyond Bézier. Explorations of drawing methods in type design In the early age of digital type, several methods were explored to draw letterforms. One of them, the Bézier spline, an algorithm that generates curves with a small quantity of data, has the crucial advantage of sparing computer memory and processing resources. It is today the industry standard. This project aims to question and reevaluate it, to move beyond established trends, to develop innovative ideas by exploring alternative methods of drawing curves, and letterforms. Beyond Bézier is an investigation of the existing approaches to letter drawing. It is also the experimentation of new methods to draw and to create. As type designers and type educators, we have felt the past few years the dead-ends that vector drawing and contemporary software brings, generating more and more fonts that just look the same. By researching and experimenting with different approaches of drawing, our design pedagogy will be nourished by this experience and shared with a larger audience through a dedicated website. If the vector is the current frontier of type design, new perspectives will be opened if we overcome that frontier. According to the Israeli-American psychologist and Nobel Laureate Daniel Kahneman, thinking operates within two systems: ‘System 1 operates automatically and quickly, with little or no effort and no sense of voluntary control. System 2 allocates attention to the effortful mental activities that demand it, including complex computations. The operations of System 2 are often associated with the subjective experience of agency, choice, and concentration. 1 One could argue that designers are working within System 1, whereas good designers make a larger use of System 2. Fighting automatism is indeed an important aspect of creativity. When one works solely with vectors, only one System is at work. Drawing with different approaches can trigger new ideas and shapes, such as the physical limitations of your tools bring new forms.2 When vector drawing becomes automatic (by muscular memory of the designer, or software-induced choices), a whole area of creativity disappears. It may also be that the ability of switching between two systems improves creativity. This is comparable to Jean-François Billeter s hypothesis about how creativity functions: he compares it to a gear change when driving a car. The moment when tension is released between two different operating regimes is the moment of revelation, of creation.3 Another and very important aspect is the collaborative approach. Type design has long been – and still is – seen as a solitary practice, with the designers in their ivory tower. The approach of Beyond Bézier is collaborative. It shares materials and approaches. Beyond Bézier is a project that can nourish designers, design students, and those interested in the way humans can create. It opens the door to further development, such as a digital tool – software based neither on vectors, bitmaps, or parametric systems. The group works simultaneously on five different axes which map different methodologies of drawing type. Each researcher is in charge of coordinating an axis while contributing to other axes simultaneously. The five axes are: 1    The Stroke 2    The Surface 3    The Collective 4    The Robot 5    The Mathematics Axes 1 and 2 are questioning traditional ways of creating fonts, mostly looking at the tools and instruments used for the creation. 3 and 4 are rather looking at who designs, in which contexts, through collaboration and exchange. Axis 5 is transversal. References 1. KAHNEMAN 2011, Daniel Kahneman, Thinking, Fast and Slow, Farrar, Straus and Giroux, New York, 2011. 2. BELLE RIVIERA X ECAL Project
BELLE RIVIERA X ECAL

BELLE RIVIERA X ECAL For the member municipalities of GEDERIVIERA, the waste management perimeter of the Vaudois Riviera, students in the BA Industrial Design are envisioning a new public trash can. GEDERIVIERA is the waste management authority for the Swiss Riviera. Its principal mission is to study and propose projects to harmonise waste management in the member municipalities. In 2021, GEDERIVIERA initiated the creation of a brand new public trash can in collaboration with ECAL to bring harmony and freshness to the streets of the Riviera.MODULA by Julie Meyer, Jade Eyman Modula is a waste bin with a flexible design. Its ingenious perforations allow various modules to be attached, such as an ashtray, a notice board, a container for doggy bags and a lid. These modules can be easily moved, added to or removed from the bin. In addition, several Modula bins can be connected to increase their capacity or facilitate selective sorting. This modular approach leaves plenty of space for creativity and new, innovative modular designs from the Riviera.Casquette par Aramis Rüdisühli, Léo Crespin The "Casquette" bin, as its name suggests, is a nod to the fashion accessory, and adds a touch of elegance to a rubbish bin. This gives it its own distinctive identity and visibility in the Riviera landscape. Casquette has been developed using simple production methods to minimise costs and simplify the manufacturing process.GYRE par Aleksandra Nazarova, Mattia Cook Gyre is an elegant and functional waste bin, thanks to its design with a double sided opening that gives it a discreet yet striking shape. Equipped with an easy-to-handle hoop, removable ashtrays and a 180° opening, the ergonomics of this litter bin have been designed to simplify its use by public service employees. The students pooled their creative skills to imagine a distinctive trash can that would exhibit character while meeting standards of functionality and quality. After several months of fruitful exchanges with GEDERIVIERA, ECAL presented three innovative trash can projects, boasting a harmonious design specially crafted to seamlessly integrate into public spaces and thus meet the expectations of citizens.

THEY – ECAL x LE CONSORTIUM,27.10.2023–31.03.2024,Dijon The Consortium Museum and ECAL present THEY, the culmination of the research project "The Raving Age. Histories and Figures of Youth" by the Master of Visual Arts. THEY, is not about us. It is the statement of a shortfall, a gap... Given this external perspective, how can we express the condition and creativity of a virtualized collective body? How can we get around the deadlocks of traditional differences, innocence, and primary inventiveness? The THEY exhibition seeks to create a diffracted image of youth – a community without community, thriving in a dissolved, uncertain world where referents move freely, unburdened by hierarchies, and transcending generational and gender constraints. The exhibition delves into the emergence of languages and forms, exploring how the foundations of a lexicon are established, and how a new way of making art, of being “contemporary” comes about. These contemporary perspectives presume acts of ownership, disappearance, ventriloquism, and the emergence of many social, interpersonal, political, and esthetic practices and experiments – always in action and opposing the inertia of walls. THEY thus establishes human maps, a sort of moral fable home to all kinds of affects and relationships of identification and indifference – forms of disappearance, a spectral base which leads us, in a certain way, into these worlds where virtuality reigns. It is a temporary refuge for “wild young people”: dissidents of systems and borders, creators of shapes, bodies, vehicles, and multiplicities, who want life, and not capital, to breed. THEY, is not about us. It is the statement of a shortfall, a gap. Given this external perspective, how can we express the condition and creativity of a virtualized collective body? How can we get around the deadlocks of traditional differences, innocence, and primary inventiveness? Can it be achieved by not doing sociology against a backdrop of existential and esthetic crisis? By freeing ourselves from a senile passion for whatever moves, lives, and rebels? How can we conceive of this transitional creature, unable to solidify in its unfinished forms, and instead very much ready to give in, so to speak, to its own unspecialized and powerful youth, turning away from any destiny and specific environment, and holding on to nothing else but its own immaturity and ignorance? The THEY exhibition is the final chapter of the research project titled “The Raving Age. Histoires et figures de la jeunesse”, directed by Vincent Normand, Philippe Azoury and Shirin Yousefi. This project is an integral part of ECAL s Master s degree in Visual Arts.1 Developed over a two-year period, the program is based on various cross-disciplinary activities including production, analysis and workshops, with many artists, thinkers, writers and students taking part in it. The platform at www.theravingage.com archives a list of all exchanges and conferences in that context. The exhibition mirrors a unique collaborative experience between a museum and an art school. Invited artists and students worked closely together during the various stages of the exhibition process, such as design and communication (Lorenzo Benzoni and Luca Frati), scenographic design with David Douard, a reality TV show directed by Sara Sadik, and even a performative piece by Gabriele Garavaglia. Some of the exhibited pieces were created specifically for this particular occasion, such as those by Julien Ceccaldi, Nicolas Ceccaldi, Mélanie Matranga, Gabriele Garavaglia, Exotourisme (Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster & Perez) and Jill Mulleady. Additional existing works were chosen for their specific resonance with the project. These include pieces by David Douard, Morag Keil, Caroline Poggi & Jonathan Vinel and David Wojnarowicz, a truly influential and dreaded figure of youth. Hermès WINDOW DISPLAY IN GENEVA Project
Hermès WINDOW DISPLAY IN GENEVA

Hermès WINDOW DISPLAY IN GENEVA The Hermès Printing Company Inspired by the aesthetics of rotary printing presses, this project allows passers-by to immerse themselves in a graphic and artistic universe. Through the ten windows of the store, “L Imprimerie Hermès” is a reinterpretation of the main stages of printing: everything starts with rolls of paper, which are then deployed in large strips, until they become posters. The paper, in all its forms, is printed along its length by repeating the story of a letter published in six different languages (French, English, Italian, German, Chinese and Japanese) by the magazine Le Monde d Hermès. A layout specially created for this project incorporates large areas of color in order to frame and highlight the accessories from the different Hermès universes. They thus seem to come to life and become part of the story.

Hermès Window display in Zürich

Hermès Window display in Zürich The Astonishing Moment of Life Inspired by the Surrealist movement and the desire to find magic and wonder in the familiar and everyday life, this project features shapes and emblematic Hermès accessories that interact to form two subtly choreographed installations. These two window displays, imagined by Greek designer Charitini Gkritzali, a student in the Master of Advanced Studies in Design for Luxury and Craftsmanship at ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne, are an interpretation of Hermès 2023 annual theme, “Astonishment”, offering a moment that oscillates between reality and dreams.

L’Arte del Vetro Grezzo Event
L’Arte del Vetro Grezzo

L Arte del Vetro Grezzo,09–17.09.2023 A selection of glass works inspired by the techniques and world of the Venetian glass Masters. On the occasion of The Venice Glass Week 2023, and as an initiative of the Fondation Etrillard (Geneva), the Fondazione dell Albero d Oro (Venice) and the Swiss manufacturer ALCO, this project aims to combine knowhow and creativity. Thanks to this support, eighteen students from the Master in Design for Luxury & Craftsmanship from the ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne have had the unique opportunity to meet and work with Murano-based Master glassmakers. This research project began with a visit of manufactures on the Venetian island, internationally renowned for its glassmaking history. During one week the students have had the chance to meet a number of artisans and discover with them ancient production techniques. At the heart of these prestigious factories, every detail is potentially transformed into a source of inspiration: a tool, raw blocks of glass, scraps accumulated in containers or blown glass pieces stacked for decades on wooden shelves. As well as the techniques and creative worlds that emerged from these workshops, the inspiration also came from life in Venice, which many of the students (from ten different nationalities) were discovering for the first time: the omnipresence of water, the colours and reflections, the erosion of materials and the contrast between the different elements. The work of the students, under the guidance of designer Ini Archibong, led to the selection of five concepts, grouped together in works made from raw materials. In the form of ‘ready-mades , the aim of this exhibition is to capture the history and skills of the Master glassmakers through creative compositions featuring simple rods, plates or blocks of glass, produced in Murano using specific processes handed down from generation to generation. Silverground Project
Silverground

Nicolas Honegger – Silverground The Silverground modules are designed to provide an opportunity for senior citizens to exercise their agility and balance in public spaces. These innovative modules are designed to be built into the ground along a walkway. Available to everyone, they are a great way to practice a fun, intergenerational activity. Balance is an essential skill for seniors. It is exercised through physical activity but is often neglected as we age. Professionally supervised physical activities are often costly for the elderly. These urban modules offer a solution accessible to all and help prevent falls – the main cause of accidents among the elderly.
