Phantom Power Project
Phantom Power

Phantom Power Phantom Power questions the social configurations of the non-audible narratives of aural practices in performances and public sound installations. How does a performance or an installation acquire substance? How does it come to matter to the people who experience it? And do we account for it? The research project Phantom Power attempts to answer these broad questions by means of a descriptive study of three public performances and sound installations organised at ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne. Each case has been chosen for the specificity of what the invited artists (Leif Elggren, Arto Lindsay, Marja-leena Sillanpää, La Monte Young and Marian Zazeela) call upon: electronic voice phenomena (EVP), the interiority of sound, and transport through sound. All three are the object of an ethnographic approach using original methodology: for each event, one day is devoted to the experience of performances and installations, followed by a discussion between the public and the artists, monitored by guest researchers (Vinciane Despret, Salomé Voegelin and Juliette Volcler). The next day 1st-year BA students in Fine Arts re-enact the performances in front of the artists themselves. In other words, the chosen methodology offers a collective conceptual analysis on the first day and a collective analysis through practice on the second day. This is meant to help produce a field survey account of sound and of the narratives and the relational modes of existence of the works. Phantom Power is a research project initiated by the BA in Visual Arts department at ECAL. It questions the social configurations of the non-audible narratives of aural practices in performances and public sound installations.Main applicantsECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne (project leader) (project leader)Research teamVisiting lecturers Vinciane Despret, Leif Elggren, Arto Lindsay, Marja-leena Sillanpää, Salomé Voegelin, Juliette, Volcler, La Monte Young, Marian ZazeelaPartnersInstitut Supérieur des Beaux-Arts Besançon / Franche-ComtéPeriodfebruary 2021 – january 2023Supported byECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne Strategic fund of the University of Applied Sciences Western Switzerland (HES-SO RCDAV)DisseminationPerformance 29 April 2021: Leif Elggren and Marja-leena Sillanpää Exhibitions From 25 November 2021 to 31 January 2022: Dream House by La Monte Young, Marian Zazeela (sound and light environment) May 2022: Parade by Arto Lindsay Talks 29 April 2021: Vinciane Despret, Leif Elggren, Marja-leena Sillanpää and the 1 BA AV students 1 December 2021: La Monte Young, Marian Zazeela, Yung Hee Choi, Salomé Voegelin and the 1 BA AV students (online) 2 December 2021: Branden W. Furniture under pressure Project
Furniture under pressure

Furniture under pressure The potential of shape memory materials in furniture design. In response to the climatic, technical and aesthetic challenges posed in the field of industrial design by the transportation of goods, the Furniture under pressure project exhaustively investigates the possibilities of flat-packing offered by materials capable of occupying a fraction of their volume and then reconfiguring themselves in one piece, without mechanical assembly. This research-creation focuses on a specific case study, the chair. Over the last decade, the rapid development of new communication technologies has brought consumers and sellers much closer together. Physical sales outlets are constantly decreasing while online sales are increasing. Although still relatively unaffected by this change, furniture sales are no exception. In view of this development, thinking in terms of objects occupying as little space as possible for a time – known as flat-packing or flat-shipping – is of interest in terms of logistics and transport. By favouring an empirical approach to design research, focused on the use of the intrinsic properties of innovative materials rather than on the elaboration of complex mechanisms or assemblies, Furniture under pressure aims to bring to light a type of solution that is radically different from the DIY model of furniture, exemplified by IKEA. Indeed, the aim is to experimentally evaluate the opportunities offered by "smart" materials capable of reconfiguring themselves, under certain conditions, into a state occupying a fraction of their initial volume, and then recovering it, whether due to their natural compressibility (sponges, synthetic foams, rubber), their shape memory properties (metal alloys, polymers) or their ability to fold, whether naturally (fabric, paper) or through engineering work (folding, CNC cutting and milling, 3D printing). Inspired by Gaetano Pesce s famous Up5 armchair, the aim of the Furniture under pressure project is to identify and select a large number of materials with potential for producing a seat that can be transported in a small volume and return to its original shape once unpacked. More advanced and concrete exploration of the characteristics and possibilities of these materials will lead to the identification of at least five concrete candidates for real implementable production, from which prototype seats will be developed and their compression, packaging and expansion tested and documented. The prototypes will have to meet a specific objective: they will have to be able to be delivered in a standard Post Office box and installed in one piece without manual assembly of different parts. At the same time, the knowledge gathered will be shared through an online catalogue presenting the materials studied and their properties, as well as the results of the tests carried out. The inventory will constitute a virtual material library for use by designers.Main applicantsECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne (project leader)Research Team (researcher) (researcher) (designer-researcher) (designer-researcher) (designer-researcher) Florian Fischbacher (head of communication) (graphic designer) (photographer/videographer) (research assistant)Periodfebruary 2021 – november 2022 Supported byECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne Strategic Funds HES-SO (RCDAV)Lecturers and researchersJamie Paik Mariana Popescu Skylar TibbitsStudents1st-year MA students in Product Design, ECAL, class of 2020-2021

The Emergence of Video Art in Europe (1960–1980): history, theory, sources and archives. Project
The Emergence of Video Art in Europe (1960–1980): history, theory, sources and archives.

The Emergence of Video Art in Europe (1960–1980): history, theory, sources and archives. To date, there is no European-wide history of video art. It is this gap that the present research programme proposes to fill. Firstly by gathering data on the artists, the works and the events that enabled the emergence of this new artistic practice in the 1960s, or that were important in its development in the following years in Europe, and by bringing to light specific national conditions of production and distribution. This programme is based on an initial mapping of video art on a European scale undertaken between 2016 and 2020 thanks to the organisation of research seminars at the Bibliothèque nationale de France (BnF), the Institut d histoire de l art in Paris (INHA) and ECAL in partnership with the Université Paris 8. This first research programme was jointly funded by the Arts H2-H laboratory of excellence and then ESTHC, with ECAL and the BnF as partners. This indexing should be continued in many other regions with the aim of transnational rewriting. The objective of the research project is twofold. On the one hand, it aims to re-evaluate continental production, to take the measure of its richness and variety, and to identify a European identity – mixed, plural, open, but nevertheless forming a cultural whole – in the practice of video art. On the other hand, the aim is to rewrite the history of this medium on an international scale, counterbalancing the America-centric character of the specialised literature on the subject in order to draw other topographies, which also include Japan or South America, with Europe constituting a node within a wider network. In order to carry out this project to renew the approach to video art, both historiographically and theoretically, we are relying on the network of some fifty national and international specialists, researchers, archive holders, artists, and witnesses that the previous programme enabled us to establish. By questioning the medium of video, the aim is also to contribute to the creation of an archaeology of new media in Europe through a series of publications and an exhibition. Automated Photography Project
Automated Photography

Automated Photography The Automated Photography research project (2019–2021) is conducted by Milo Keller in the framework of the MA in Photography at ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne. It is a continuation of the research project Augmented Photography, equally conducted at ECAL (2016–2017), which aimed to question the mutability of the digital image, transformed both in its physical materiality and in its virtual expression. For the past twenty years, many photographers have been integrating images produced autonomously by machines into their work. We are now witnessing a paradigm shift in the process of creating photography. From photographic capture in the strict sense we move towards practices involving appropriation, automated and computational processes: a phenomenon which reflects a conception of space that is increasingly less built on the equivalence between the human eye and the machine. The Automated Photography research project (2019–2021) is conducted by Milo Keller in the framework of the MA in Photography at ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne. It is a continuation of the research project Augmented Photography, equally conducted at ECAL (2016–2017), which aimed to question the mutability of the digital image, transformed both in its physical materiality and in its virtual expression. Automated Photography focuses on a specific aspect of these changes, which are omnipresent in contemporary visual culture: the automation of capture systems (smartphones, lidar, UAVs, satellites, space probes), the automation of image processing (machine vision analysis, facial recognition), and the increasing automation of image production and post-production (CGI, photogrammetry, artificial intelligence). Automated Photography has a dual objective. On the one hand, it plans to develop a critical theory of the automated image, in order to confront the students of the MA in Photography with its multiple implications (social, political, technical and aesthetic). On the other hand, it proposes to respond to the profound changes in the photographic profession, which must constantly adapt to technological developments. By combining an analytical and a theoretical perspective with considerations resulting from the practical experiences with these technical devices, the project aims to take advantage of the crossroads of these different fields. The synthesis is based on a practical process by applying these technologies, on an aesthetic outlook by analysing the visual qualities of these devices and their creative potential, and on a theoretical approach by assessing the practical results in their cultural, social and political context.Main applicantECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne (project leader)Research team (researcher) (researcher) (research assistant) (research assistant) (graphic designer)Visiting lecturersMarco de Mutiis Simone C. Locked up in their apartments, alone or sometimes in shared apartments, the photographers often had only themselves as a model and had to deal with their domestic environment in order to conceive a project. If loneliness or boredom can be feel here and there, these images reflect above all the power of imagination. Hans Emmeneger - Fondation de l'Hermitage

Hans Emmeneger - Fondation de l Hermitage During the retrospective organized by the Hermitage Foundation, photography students from ECAL/École cantonale d art de Lausanne pay tribute to this little-known artist. Without having seen his works beforehand, they explore his universe through the analysis of reproductions and some biographical elements. Throughout the semester, students delve into the mysteries of Emmenegger s work, pondering what his paintings could reveal under an X-ray scanner or how he would have used photography if given the opportunity. They employ contemporary techniques such as analog and digital photography, video, and 3D software to offer personal and poetic interpretations of his work. Their creations, presented as part of the retrospective, provide fresh perspectives on Emmenegger s oeuvre and invite viewers to discover this mysterious artist through the eyes of ECAL students. As part of the partnership with ECAL, Swiss Luxury House La Prairie has collaborated with students of the Master of Advanced Studies in Design for Luxury and Craftsmanship programme, under the creative leadership of Sabine Marcelis, designer and winner of Wallpaper* Magazine s 2020 Designer of the Year award.Gal Bulka from Israel, Paula Chacartegui from Spain, Chia-Ling Chang from Taiwan, Apolline Morel-Lab from France, Fernando Rivero from Mexico, and Charlotte Therre from Switzerland distinguished themselves as part of this collaboration with La Prairie. They were invited to design an object of design that expresses the brand s vision of Swissness – the purity, precision and timelessness inherent to the land of the house s origins. Using materials native to Switzerland, each student expressed a unique interpretation that captures the imagination. Collectively, their works embody an unmistakable Swiss aesthetic and, as citizens of the world, they bring a singular perspective to the notion of Swissness. The result is a combination of sculptural, kinetic, interactive and time-infused works that express diverse and creative interpretations of Swiss aesthetics. The works tell an emotional, immersive story through these installations. The six students and their works will be featured in an Instagram exhibition hosted on La Prairie s page from Thursday 21 January 2021.The winning student will receive a grant from La Prairie to use towards launching their design career. The winning piece will be selected by two parties: by a jury composed of design experts from ECAL and La Prairie and a call for votes from the public over Instagram. The final result will be announced on Monday 25 January 2021.

Enabled by Design Project
Enabled by Design

Enabled by Design Enabled by Design is a joint research project between EPFL and ECAL, funded by Gebert Rüf Stiftung, which aims to foster collaboration between young entrepreneurs involved in technological projects and designers. Over recent years, EPFL has identified a genuine need for design expertise to successfully transform laboratory technologies into products that are available to users. Design is now a crucial resource in innovatory projects because of its user focus, strategic vision, iterative methodology and creativity. Collaboration with designers offers added value to products/services and allows the young entrepreneurs to reduce uncertainty, validate market opportunities and communicate a coherent and persuasive message to potential customers and investors. The research team has created a web-based platform to create links between entrepreneurs and designers seeking to collaborate on technological projects. The platform offers different design missions (UX/UI, industrial design, graphic design, video, animation and photography), displays the findings from a variety of collaborative projects and provides a series of tools and articles to facilitate collaboration. There is currently a design center within the EPFL Startup Unit which offers this service to start ups on an ongoing basis and seeks to transform emerging technologies into usable products.Main applicantsECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne (project leader) (project leader)Research teamIsabel Casado PartnerEPFL/Federal Polytechnic University of Lausanne, Enable programmePeriodmarch 2019 – december 2020Supported byECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne Gebert Rüf StiftungDisseminationPublication medium.com/enabled-by-design Website enabledbydesign.ch Press N.a., Supporting entrepreneurs from lab to market, in Startupticker.ch, 6 September 2019 Tiago Peres, How to build a good prototype, in Technologist.eu, 2 January 2019

Philipp Klak – wasserturm() Mention Bien Randomness is a crucial quality in artistic practice. This project addresses the issue of the extent to which machines can help further enhance and overcome the human aspect by programming an image and randomly generating unlimited variations of the same scene and the same type of object. During my time at ECAL I developed an interest in studying hidden processes and structures. For this project, and in reference to the history of photography and in particular to the Bechers typologies, I randomly generated images with the help of a fully automated system. Nebraska (photography) Project
Nebraska (photography)

Fanny Reynaud – Nebraska (photography) The movie tells two stories that temporalities each other ultimately :  the encounter between a Swiss farmer and a Portuguese traveler, and a cow s pregnancy. Fiction / 20 min Synopsis Lost in the mountains, surrounded by his cows, André works hard on the farm. His daily life suddenly takes a new turn when he meets Rafaele, a passing man who speaks Portuguese. Not sharing the same language, the two men try to communicate by means other than speech. The illness of one of the cows, Nebraska, and the impending birth of her calf, unites them by a common sensitivity. Comment My major is Filming at ECAL s Film Studies Department and my graduation project therefore consisted of being director of photography for a film made by one of my fellow students, Lou-Théa Papaloïzos, and monitoring its production from the early days of preparing the film all the way to grading. The film in question tells the story of André, a farmer who raises Swiss cows, and Rafaele, a young Portuguese man crossing Switzerland to join his brother in Germany. The film subtly exposes the attraction that the two men feel for each other, bathed in the gentleness of the animal world. Fanny Reynaud

CSX369 Project
CSX369

Niki Paltenghi – CSX369 “CSX369” features research on the potential of variable fonts in the ASCII technique. A technical quality is identified – that of precise quantification between two instances – and used for colour mixing through typography. Letters are tripled in the same position and each one has a primary colour. Their interspersed variations create secondary, tertiary, etc. hues. The system is implemented with an image processing tool. The research is presented with a specimen and some posters. Prix de l ECAL

From Video Art to New Media: The Case of the Locarno VideoArt Festival (1980-2001) Project
From Video Art to New Media: The Case of the Locarno VideoArt Festival (1980-2001)

From Video Art to New Media: The Case of the Locarno VideoArt Festival (1980-2001) This research project looks into the shift from video art to new media, taking a major but little-studied event, the Locarno VideoArt Festival (1980-2001), as a case study: a pioneering space for broadcasting video art in Europe and a place for exploring electronic art which took place every year from 1980 to 2001 on Monte Verità. The analysis of the festival s archives and the creation of an exhibition of the works presented there highlight its pioneering role for those who wish to explore the history of information and communications theory. This research project seeks to refresh our understanding of video art and serves a dual purpose: as a piece of curatorial research to test the hypothesis that video art is characterised by its interactive quality, and a systematic enquiry into the nature and function of video art and new media. The research work spreading out over a three-year period combines tools developed in information and communications science with contributions from the history of video and electronic art, as well as contemporary art theory, curatorial studies, aesthetics and critical theory. As a result the project re-evaluates the place of Switzerland and Europe in the international video art network. Additionally, the previously unpublished festival s archives, the audio-visual documentation of the seminars and our recorded interviews with the festival s major artists are published on the project s dedicated website. The curatorial project, which takes place at the Elisarion in Minusio, is centred around the idea of a virtualisation of video art through computer-generated images and the internet. The core ideas behind the research are thus combined with the exhibition medium in order to assess their coherence.Main applicantECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne (project leader)Research teamDr Adeena Mey (researcher) Maud Pollien (researcher) Cédric Fluckiger (assistant)Visiting lecturersLorenzo Bianda Marco Maria Gazzano Guest artists Lorenzo Bianda Robert Cahen Francesco Mariotti Francisco MeirinoPartnersClaudio Berger, Centro culturale e museo Elisarion, Minusio Elio Schenini, MASI – Museo d arte della Svizzera italiana, Lugano Nicole Schweizer, Musée cantonal des beaux-arts, Lausanne Samuel Gross, Istituto Svizzero, Rome Marco Maria Gazzano, Università Roma Tre, Rome Grégoire Quenault, Alain Carou, Labex project, Université Paris 8 and the French National Library, Emergence of video art in EuropePeriodOctober 2017 – September 2020Supported byECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne SNSF – Swiss National Science Foundation Centro culturale e museo Elisarion, MinusioDisseminationPublication Francois Bovier and Adeena Mey (eds.), VideoArt Festival Locarno: a Prospective, Lausanne: ECAL / Minusio: Centro culturale e museo Elisarion, 2019.

"Thek it and Hang it" installation Event
"Thek it and Hang it" installation

"Thek it and Hang it" installation,02.06.2020–18.04.2021,Musée romain de Lausanne-Vidy As part of the exhibition "Le temps et moi" at the Musée romain de Lausanne-Vidy, "Thek it and Hang it" installation created at the instigation of artist Miriam Laura Leonardi. Installation created at the instigation of artist Miriam Laura Leonardi by Djellza Azemi, Ana-Francesca Balan, Tudor Ciurescu, Peilian Li, Cyane Findji, Ernest Gachet, Tennessee MacDougall, Christian Schulz and Stefan Tanase, students from the Bachelor Fine Arts at ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne. As part of the exhibition "Le temps et moi" at the Musée romain de Lausanne-Vidy, from 2 June 2020 to 18 April 2021. Inspired by the notions of time and memory, the American artist Paul Thek (born in Brooklyn, 1933 - 1988) proposed to its students to design "something to put over a child s bed". A group from ECAL took up the same topic to imagine and create this installation. The time here is upside down: a cradle has been dismantled, its bars soaked in wax, then sunk one s teeth into, before being put back together as a mobile. Common in children s rooms, especially above cribs, mobiles entertain infants and stimulate their sight. The bed protecting the child here becomes a fragile distraction, suspended in the room covered with soft carpet topped with blue. On the floor, the night light is a bulb covered by hair. And by way of a lullaby, you can get carried away by a poem more disturbing than soothing in the earphone... Thanks to Philippe Decrauzat, Stéphane Kropf, Charly Mirambeau, Gina Proenza and Paul Thek as well as the Roman Museum team. Dates and times From 2 June 2020 to 18 April 2021 Normal: 11:00-18:00 Closed on Mondays, except July-August and public holidays. Closed on 24, 25, 31 December and 1st January. Motion Design - Animated poster – 2020 Project
Motion Design - Animated poster – 2020

Motion Design - Animated poster – 2020 Selection of animated sequences made during a 3D course directed by Benjamin Muzzin. The students were inspired by a painting and transcribed it into three different scenes. This video showcases a selection of animated posters created during an intensive workshop week by students in Graphic Design and Media & Interaction Design. The goal of the workshop was to design the upcoming announcement posters for ECAL s future workshops. By exploring the possibilities of motion design, the students developed dynamic visual identities tailored to the school s various communication formats. These creations reflect their creativity, technical skills, and ability to engage audiences through a contemporary visual language.

Body City Project
Body City

Body City Mapping of the Body City show Unique creation imagined for Lausanne en Jeux ! - the animation program of the Youth Olympic Games Lausanne 2020 - Body City is a show where arts and urban sports meet in an impressive open-air setting, on the central square of Lausanne. "Bodies in fusion with the city", it is from this strong image that Nicolas Musin conceived and realized Body City, a contemporary show questioning the relationship of the young generations to the city. On an open-air stage representing a city in constant mutation, more than 50 performers aged between 9 and 30 will cross their disciplines, bringing together arts and urban sports such as skateboarding, BMX, rollerblading, scooter, parkour and dance. A poetic and spectacular journey in the heart of Lausanne, where video, sound and light are mixed together! Imagined within the framework of Lausanne en Jeux, this show is above all a work of youth supported by art schools and training centers for urban disciplines established in the agglomeration of Lausanne. Thus, Body City has brought together different actors from Lausanne such as students from ECAL (video design), HEMU (composition of the original music and recording of the soundtrack), dancers from the Ecole-Atelier Rudra Béjart (dance and percussion), JDSEvents (hip hop, breakdance) as well as the riders from La Fièvre and the plotters from X-Trem Move. The mapping of the show was created by the students of the Visual Communication Department (BA Graphic Design, BA Photography, BA Media & Interaction Design) under the direction of Vincent Jacquier, Angelo Benedetto, Jean-Vincent Simonet and Mitch Paone while the editing was done by Amaury Hamon and Clément Lambelet.

Smartphone Peripheral Companions Project
Smartphone Peripheral Companions

Smartphone Peripheral Companions The research project Smartphone Peripheral Companions explores new forms of interaction with the data flows passing through our smartphone, questioning the status of total object that this device has acquired. So much of contemporary culture and interactions is taking place through interfaces; interfaces are part of cultural expression and participation. Therefore, questioning the impact of the mechanisms underlying current smartphone interfaces is also a societal interest. The research team conducted a number of reflections around a broad vision of the issues related to the use of smartphones and the data flows that pass through them. In order to also collect contributions from smartphone users, they set up an online participatory platform, voluntarily moving away from the usual form of the scientific questionnaire. By imagining, designing and prototyping new objects or apparatuses, this project aims to offer proposals for re-appropriation, re-extraction of certain features locked in the smartphone, thereby allowing a different, more customizable access to data or functions. Consequently, fostering a shift from the glowing rectangle to a more detached and focused interaction, away from the screen. The main results of the project include a series of 5 to 10 objects offering alternative access to some data transiting through the smartphone. These semi-functional prototypes are documented and presented as images and films on the project website as well as made available for exhibition. A kit of tools and instructions to reproduce some of them, together with an ever-growing, participative collection of anonymous testimonies from smartphone is also accessible online.Main applicantECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne (project leader)Research team (research assistant) (research assistant) Andreas Sonderegger Visiting lecturerJesse HowardStudents, , , , , , , , Emily Groves, , , , , , , , , , , Periodseptember 2018 – february 2020Supported byECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne Strategic fund of the University of Applied Sciences Western Switzerland (HES-SO RCDAV)DisseminationWebsite smartphone-confessions.worldPartnerEPFL+ECAL Lab

Tokyo summer university Project
Tokyo summer university

Tokyo summer university In Summer 2019, thirteen students of ECAL Master in Photography  supervised by Milo Keller, traveled to Japan to develop thirteen personal projects in collaboration with Taisuke Koyama and TOKYO PHOTOGRAPHIC RESEARCH. From still and moving images to computer-generated photographic visuals, students artworks explore a wide variety of aspects of the Japanese megalopolis which is, once again, undergoing major transformations in preparation for the 2020 Summer Olympic Games. Some projects focus on concrete aspects of the city, from the destruction of small residential houses to the construction of the gigantic Olympic village and the conquest of new territories by the sea. Other works investigate particularities of Japanese culture such as food in a family setting, the desire to generate humanoid robots, the confusion of child and adult worlds in manga, Pichinko Gambling , the reinvention of Ikebana and the rising stars among young girls. Finally, works seek to visualise more abstract concepts such as loneline In Summer 2019, thirteen students of ECAL Master in Photography supervised by Milo Keller, traveled to Japan to develop thirteen personal projects in collaboration with Taisuke Koyama and TOKYO PHOTOGRAPHIC RESEARCH. Improvisation is shit Project
Improvisation is shit

Improvisation is shit "Improvisation is shit" is a performance workshop introducing role-play and improvisation techniques led by Melanie Bonajo at ECAL. During the workshop the students are challenged to negotiate again what it means to be human by way of our relationship to technology and systems of control. The onset of the digital era and the steady increase in globalised secular values has led to sexuality as a sphere of daily life being more visible and more available than ever. Nevertheless, it seems as though people are losing the ability to make meaningful connections even in physically intimate circumstances. What does it say about our society that many people would rather meet and then ghost a hook up rather than pay someone for a conscious orgasm? And what does it say if Capitalism is making money off of our loneliness and incapacities to source our own intimacy? Guardare l’utopia Project
Guardare l’utopia

Guardare l utopia Utopia is invisible; only utopians can see it. A class of 12 students from the Photography Master at the ECAL/University of Art and Design of Lausanne, in residence at Casa Corti in Pellio, Val d Intelvi (Italy), elaborated the concepts of utopia and community. Identifying the malaise of a generation trapped in social networks, confused between reality and the virtual sphere, and in need of establishing new values, the group developed a range of different strategies: morning meditation sessions, walks to Monte Generoso, shared meals and discussions to produce photographs and videos which, while gradually shifting away from reality, reach imaginary dimensions that oscillate between utopia and dystopia, figuration and abstraction. --- Students Emidio Battipaglia Robin Bervini Jasmine Deporta Anja Karolina Furrer Alessia Gunawan Christian Harker Johanna Hullár Philipp Klak Doruk Kumkumoglu Jelly Luise Igor Pjörrt Gedvile Tamosiunaite Curator Milo Keller Assistants Florian Amoser Calum Douglas Graphic Design Nicolas Polli biennaleimmagine.ch https://casacorti.org/ Utopia is invisible; only utopians can see it. BRUTAL 003 Project
BRUTAL 003

BRUTAL 003 To celebrate the Paris Photo 2019 edition, the Bachelor Photography students of ECAL, under the artistic direction of Nicolas Poillot, translated the music of the producer IKAZ BOI into images. The visuals, sometimes smooth and neat, sometimes dark and rough, were produced by listening to the new project BRUTAL 3: an  intimate album oscillating between romance and darkness composed with instrumental tracks only. Exclusively, 500 unpublished and numbered vinyl copies were created especially for this occasion. For two days, ECAL invests the Au Roi gallery, inviting spectators to a sound and visual journey, in an ephemeral sensory space generated by a synchronous video installation. HD Images Cocktail: 07.11.19 from 19h00 to 21h30 (by invitation only) Exhibition: from 08.11.19 to 09.11.19 from 10h00 to 20h00 Place: Au Roi, 75, rue de la Fontaine-au-Roi, 75011 Paris After: Brutal Party Curators: Nicolas Poillot & Milo Keller Students: Mina Albespy, Faustine Ardaine, Maëwenn Bourcelot, Sarah Coppet, Gaël Corboz, Noé Cotter, Matthieu Croizier, Alexandra Dautel, Charlotte Favre, Laurent Fiorentino, Norida Ho, Gohan Keller, Achille Laplante - The Brown, Pavo Marinovic, Santiago Martinez, Mindaugas Matulis, Anouk Maupu, Maxime Pouillot, Margot Sparkes, Tara Ulmann, Valentin Woeffray Partners: Know-How, Heineken, Elipson www.ecal.ch www.nicolaspoillot.com www.auroi.fr

Paper Park Project
Paper Park

Paper Park Marie Douel and Emile Barret from Hors Pistes led a workshop with the 2nd year bachelor in industrial design. They asked the students to create a maze made entirely from the paper waste of the ECAL printing centre. Based on the principle of the exquisite corpse, each group created one part of the labyrinth with a strong aesthetic and structural approach, allowing the visitor to get lost in distinct universes.

Zone Grise Project
Zone Grise

Zone Grise For their first workshop at ECAL, the first year Bachelor Photography students were given the opportunity to work with the Swiss photographer duo Taiyo Onorato and Nico Krebs. After receiving 20Kg of clay each, they began their plastic exploration with the creation of a mask, a recognizable and anthropomorphic form. By gradually moving away from figuration, the clay, gradually transforming into an image, has been the founding element of formal, intuitive and experimental explorations. The results have been published in the form of a book and an ephemeral installation in a closed and fragile space where the frenzy of creation seems frozen in time.
