Folklore Fusion at Milano Design Week Event
Folklore Fusion at Milano Design Week

Folklore Fusion at Milano Design Week,08–13.04.2025,Spazio Orso 16, Milano ECAL presents Folklore Fusion at Milano Design Week 2025 Through the immense popularity of anime, manga, or global phenomena, Japanese narratives and visuals have conquered the world, shaping pop culture and popularizing themes from Japanese folklore in Western media. In this context, Folklore Fusion explores the creative interplay between tradition and modern visual storytelling with a cutting-edge CGI character project. After an intense trip through Tokyo s vibrant neighborhoods, rich history, architecture, and local legends, ECAL Bachelor Media & Interaction Design students created the Swijūs — hybrid creatures blending Japanese and Swiss Folklore. Beneath its playful appearance, Folklore Fusion examines the narrative potential of modular design. Presented at Milan Design Week in a scenography conceived by ECAL Bachelor Industrial Design students, the project offers an immersive experience that brings the Swijūs to life, enriched by a trading card game collection, an interactive map of Tokyo and a printed publication. Beyond paying tribute to Japanese culture, Folklore Fusion and its Swijūs become imaginary artefacts, reflecting the cultural exchanges and shared narratives of our time. ECAL × SDOL, Horizon Ouest, Regards sur la métamorphose urbaine Project
ECAL × SDOL, Horizon Ouest, Regards sur la métamorphose urbaine

ECAL × SDOL, Horizon Ouest, Regards sur la métamorphose urbaine New transport infrastructure is emerging, while former industrial wastelands are giving way to modern buildings and redesigned outdoor spaces. Gradually, residents are moving into these new neighborhoods and adopting new habits.  To capture the first moments of life in these spaces, the association "Ouest lausannois: Prix Wakker 2011" has invited second-year students from the ECAL Bachelor of Photography program to observe them throughout 2024. This project highlights 18 ongoing construction sites or recently completed neighborhoods. Through their perspectives, the students offer original approaches to discovering, understanding, and appropriating these new spaces.  Photography maintains a unique relationship with the world around us, as it often depends on it. Far from merely documenting reality in a strict sense, it has the power to transfigure and reveal the invisible or the unspeakable. This is the approach adopted by the ECAL photography students at the request of the "Ouest lausannois: Prix Wakker 2011" association, as they explored various territories in western Lausanne. As part of this commission, each student was randomly assigned a specific location—be it a new neighborhood, a construction site, or a distinctive building—on which they worked over an academic year. Faced with spaces that were sometimes unphotogenic or even resistant to imagery, the challenge was to look beyond appearances, to resonate with these places in order to grasp their unique dynamics. The photographs question our perception of these recent landscapes and bear witness to the human activity unfolding within them. What do they reveal about our ways of living and moving? Who are the people inhabiting these spaces? What new landscapes emerge from these rapid transformations?  Through approaches that are sometimes sensitive and intimate, sometimes detached and analytical, or even driven by a formal fascination with the objects captured, the works presented reveal the density and diversity of everyday life. They bring forth a poetic vision of the city, inviting us to consider these territories not merely as functional backdrops but as fully-fledged spaces, rich with history, form, and identity—fluid and multifaceted, just like those who inhabit them.

Horizon Ouest,26.03–21.05.2025,Bussigny Observing Urban Transformation: ECAL Students Capture the New Spaces of Western Lausanne New transport infrastructures are being built, while former industrial wastelands are giving way to modern buildings and redeveloped outdoor spaces. Little by little, residents are taking over these new neighborhoods and adopting new habits. To capture the first moments of life in these spaces, the association "Ouest lausannois : Prix Wakker 2011" invited second-year students in ECAL s Bachelor of Photography program to observe them throughout 2024. The exhibition highlights 18 construction sites in progress or recently completed neighborhoods. Through their eyes, the students offer us original approaches to discovering, taming and appropriating these new spaces. At the end of the exhibition, everyone is invited to go and explore these places for themselves. Photography has a unique relationship with the world around us, because it often depends on it. Far from documenting it in the strict sense of the word, photography has the capacity to transfigure and reveal the invisible or the unspeakable. At the request of the "Ouest lausannois: Prix Wakker 2011" Association, ECAL photography students have adopted this approach, exploring various territories in the western part of Lausanne. As part of this commission, each student was allocated a specific location by lottery: a new district, a construction site or a singular building, on which he or she worked for one academic year. Faced with spaces that are sometimes unphotogenic, or even resistant to images, the challenge was to go beyond appearances, to enter into resonance with these places in order to grasp their own dynamics. The photographs on display question our perception of these recent landscapes, and bear witness to the human activity taking place there. What do they say about the way we live and move around? Who are the people who inhabit these spaces? What landscape forms are emerging from these rapid transformations? Through approaches that are at times sensitive and intimate, at times distanced and analytical, or guided by a formal fascination for the objects apprehended, the works presented reveal the density and diversity of everyday life. They give rise to a poetics of the city, inviting us to consider these territories not as mere functional backgrounds, but as spaces in their own right, bearers of histories, forms and an identity of their own - shifting and multiple, like those who inhabit them.DATES & VENUETravelling exhibition Bussigny 26.03 – 10.04 PL. Le livre d’artiste - 24/25 Project
Le livre d’artiste - 24/25

Le livre d artiste - 24/25 As part of the editorial design course led by Anouk Schneider and Nicolas Polli, second-year Visual Communication students had the opportunity to design an artist s book during the first semester. This book project stands out for its contemporary approach, aiming to create an editorial object that harmoniously integrates form and content within today s publishing landscape. Students were encouraged to fully embrace their artistic freedom at every stage of the creative process—whether in terms of format, paper choice, binding, layout, illustrations, text, or typography. Within this course, the artist s book can take shape through various modes of illustration, such as photography, reproduction, contextualization, drawing, 3D, and more. The emphasis is placed on the author s artistic vision and the means implemented to bring it to life. Students take on multiple roles as editor, curator, and architect, thereby covering the responsibilities of art director, designer, photographer, stylist, illustrator, typographer, editor-in-chief, and copy editor. This course highlights contemporary editorial design by exploring the narrative potential of a carefully constructed content sequence. ECAL LECTURE – JEAN-CHARLES DE CASTELBAJAC Event
ECAL LECTURE – JEAN-CHARLES DE CASTELBAJAC

ECAL LECTURE – JEAN-CHARLES DE CASTELBAJAC,18.03.2025,IKEA Auditorium, ECAL An avant-garde designer and artist, Jean-Charles de Castelbajac anticipated what today constitutes the basis of new creation: art and fashion, detour and collaboration. Multi-disciplinary work of Jean-Charles de Castelbajac - art, fashion and design - revolves around a short chromatic range of blue, yellow and red, one of the finest representations of which was to dress Pope John Paul II, bishops and priests for the 1997 World Youth Day. Passionate about heraldry, the science of coats of arms, vexillology, the science of flags, semiotics, the study of signs, pop art and the world of childhood, his art and fashion bring together these dualities: the epic, the historic, the traditional and the alternative. He has collaborated with many artists, including Keith Haring, Lady Gaga, Robert Mapplethorpe, Pedro Winter and Pharrell Williams. He began his career as a designer alongside his mother, setting up Ko & Co in Limoges. His first obvious garment was a coat cut from his boarding-school blanket, as well as clothes made from mops, thus launching the concept of upcycling. He went on to found the Jean-Charles de Castelbajac fashion house in 1978. As early as the 1980s, he anticipated the current decompartmentalization of art and fashion by collaborating with artists of all disciplines on his shows: musicians, photographers and visual artists. He worked with Miquel Barceló, Ben and Robert Combas to create tableau dresses, with Robert Mapplethorpe, Keith Haring and Cindy Sherman to create invitations for his shows, and with Malcolm McLaren to create the music for his shows. In 1986, he was exhibited at New York s Fashion Institute and Technology. In 2006, at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, then at the Musée Galliera in Paris in 2007. Also an artist, he created a 3700 m2 fresco for Orly airport in Paris in 2015. In September 2018, he created a monumental work for the Biennale des antiquaires de Paris at the Grand Palais. From 2018 to 2022, he is artistic director of United Colors of Benetton. His artistic work is the subject of an exhibition entitled Le Peuple de Demain at the children s gallery of the Centre Pompidou in 2021-2022, presented at the West Bund Museum in Shanghai and at the Centre Pompidou Malaga in 2023. In 2022, he will also be present at the Mobilier National with the scenography for the exhibition No taste for bad taste, retracing 40 years of French design, and with a carte blanche entitled L atour d assises, focusing on French styles. In June 2024, he installs a 15-metre trellis sculpture on the wall of the Société de Géographie in Paris, called “L Ange Géographe”. He was chosen by the Diocese of Paris to design the liturgical vestments and ornaments for the reopening of Notre-Dame de Paris in December 2024.DATES & SCHEDULE18.03.2025 6pm Free entryVENUEIKEA Auditorium, ECALWEBSITEjeancharlesdecastelbajac.com

Summer University in Veneto 2024 Project
Summer University in Veneto 2024

Summer University in Veneto 2024 In September 2024, 3rd year students explored the rich heritage of Italy s Veneto region, an area at the crossroads of artistic, cultural and industrial history. The trip gave the students an invaluable opportunity to immerse themselves between tradition and innovation, and to experience different facets of design and publishing through enriching encounters. On the way to Venice, a stop at Carlo Scarpa s Brion Tomb gave us an insight into the architecture of this funerary monument. In Treviso, a meeting with former student Federico Barbon led to a fascinating discussion on book design.VeronaIn Verona, a visit to the Fedrigoni paper mill, which specialises in the creation of top-of-the-range paper, gave them an insight into the manufacturing process and enabled them to design a collaborative project based on paper samples. The students also had the opportunity to explore the precious collection of manuscripts in the Biblioteca del Capitolare, a unique witness to the history of the written word.In Venice, they discovered the Art Biennale, exploring the exhibitions at the Arsenale and the Giardini. At the same time, a meeting with Benjamin Reichen from the Åbäke collective enabled them to find out more about his involvement in a screen-printing workshop dedicated to the rehabilitation of prisoners. A visit to the Grafiche Veneziane printing works rounded off this immersion in contemporary publishing.

Soft Photography Project
Soft Photography

Soft Photography Soft Photography is a research project conducted by the Master of Photography at ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne with the support of the HES-SO. It aims to shed light on the role of human emotions in the creation and reception of images produced using generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) or computer-generated imagery (CGI). Carried out from September 2025 to Spring 2026, this research aims to examine an unthought-of aspect of generative AI and CGI: the significance of human emotions, both in the creation of these tools (database annotation, software programming, cultural bias) and in the perception of the produced images (empathy, visual culture, subconsciousness) or their uses (capitalism of emotion, soft power, self-representation, political propaganda). The discussion and research surrounding the exponential development of AI technologies in visual culture often overlook this emotional component, even though it is structurally linked to these technologies, as they necessarily involve human apprehension. Unlike automated images, which frequently have an operational function and are only ‘seen by machines, images generated by AI and CGI are essentially created for humans, whether for social networks, advertising, industry, politics, or the artistic field. Soft Photography aims to examine the role and function of emotions by analyzing these new photographic tools and looking at specific occurrences, such as memories reconstructed in CGI or AI. Far from strictly formal experimentation, these practices demonstrate the complex entanglement between emotion, subjectivity, technical processes, and vulnerability. The project, therefore, aims to map, analyze, and experiment with the place of emotions within these new practices. Visual Identity BA3 S1 2024-2025 Project
Visual Identity BA3 S1 2024-2025

Visual Identity BA3 S1 2024-2025 Through the prism of visual identity, this project addresses issues of graphic language and artistic direction. Each stage of the project examines an aspect of the development of a visual identity: research, concept, visual language, design and communication. RADIONModular visual identity designed for the RADION club in Amsterdam. Designed to be both recognisable and impactful, it adapts to all formats and uses in order to meet the needs of a nightclub in a highly competitive environment. HS UHT USTThis project explores a potential overhaul of the Swiss Shooting Federation s visual identity in order to place it in a more contemporary and rigorous context. By moving away from the traditional clichés associated with shooting sports, this new identity aims to reposition the federation by emphasising excellence, precision and modernity in order to appeal to a new audience. La jetée In 1962, French filmmaker Chris Marker released La Jetée. It was an experimental film made up of hundreds of 35 mm black and white shots. It tells the story of a journey through time in a distorted post-apocalyptic Paris. The visual identity is based on an original typography designed to pay homage to Marker s raw material and its French context, and transcribes the idea of sequencing and light projection. It evolves through a teaser for a screening of La Jetée and a booklet containing the entire film script. ICONOHow do you talk to images? Should exhibition images be shown or not? Collages, appropriationists, the whole world up to the present day, a constellation of images... Since the beginning of the 20th century, iconographic artists have been appropriating images produced on an industrial scale. The images of these same artists form the name of the fictitious exhibition ICONO. By re-appropriating them, identity uses their codes to communicate. ApneaNumbers are omnipresent in the world of freediving, whether measuring depth or the duration of an immersion. This visual identity is based on a variable typography with two axes, each representing one of these parameters. Duration is illustrated by the change in the fat of the counter-forms, symbolising how full the diver s lungs are. Depth is represented by the thickness of the contours, evoking the gradation of colours that darken with immersion. The animation of these variables creates a breathing effect, echoing the rhythm of apnea. Orpheum TheaterNow abandoned, the Orpheum Theater in New Bedford, USA, had its heyday at the beginning of the XXᵉ century. To illustrate its transition from 6ᵉ to 7ᵉ art, the identity of this film library traces the three major periods that marked this venue. It combines neoclassical ornamentation, as reinterpreted in the Art Deco era, with a typographic structure inspired by flyers from the golden age of theatre. The whole is geometrically

Parasonic: Transmission of fugitive aural practices

Parasonic: Transmission of fugitive aural practices Parasonic is a research project on the social and racial constructions of aural practices, based on a critique of a regime of thinking and listening to sound that is over-represented in the arts, and which aims to create spaces for the transmission of fugitive aural practices. Parasonic is a research project on the social and racial constructions of aural practices, based on a critique of a regime of thinking and listening to sound that is over-represented in the arts, and which aims to create spaces for the transmission of fugitive aural practices. It is part of contemporary studies on the cultural history of perceptions and works alongside researchers who have been deconstructing racializing practices and politics of perception for a century (in particular Du Bois, 1920; Fanon, 1949; Baldwin, 1955; Morrison, 1992; Glissant, 1990; Gilroy, 1995; hooks, 1997; Hartman, 1997; Haraway, 1997; Wynter, 2003; Ahmed, 2007; Harney and Moten, 2022; Campt, 2017, 2023). The project articulates two levels of discussion: a substantive level based on theoretical debates on the notion of ‘white aurality . And an operational level based on the audio-visual editing of filmed artists stories of listening and their public played in spaces for the transmission of practical knowledge. Two levels of goals are therefore also articulated: to gain knowledge and self-critical awareness about the relationship between racialization and listening practices; and to create pieces designed as tools to transmit listenings what the regime of white aurality does not hear: ways of listening that escape it, or that ignore it, or that oppose it (hence the term para-sonic). The Picture-Writer. Warja Lavater, Graphic Designer and Illustrator Project
The Picture-Writer. Warja Lavater, Graphic Designer and Illustrator

The Picture-Writer. Warja Lavater, Graphic Designer and Illustrator This project investigates the work of the graphic designer and artist, Warja Lavater, an internationally recognised Swiss graphic designer, illustrator, bookmaker, filmmaker and artist. Amongst Warja Lavater s (Winterthur, 28 September 1913 – Zurich, 3 May 2007) most famous designs is the three-key logo for the Swiss bank UBS, which the bank – then named Schweizerischen Bankverein – began using in 1938. Yet Lavater is far much more than these three keys. Although the emblem is known the world over and her work was appreciated internationally during her career, recognition in Switzerland came late, overshadowed notably by her more well-known husband, the designer and artist Gottfried Honegger. For instance, it was only in the 1990s that the Canton Zurich awarded her the art prize for her lifetime work.  The scholarship on her work has accordingly been sparse; the present research corrects this gap. During her extensive career, Lavater created posters, logos, packaging, illustrations, installations for exhibitions and artworks. She is especially known for her many experimental artist books and what she called “folded stories”, a series of leporellos (accordion-style publications) adapting familiar tales as well as new stories in a pictorial manner. These books used a formal vocabulary based on a drawing system devised by the designer, which translated complex stories into symbols and signs. To describe her work on these publications, the designer coined the term Bildstellerin, a portmanteau which translates as “picture-writer”. By documenting her oeuvre, the research is not only going to improve the scholarship on a designer, but also more widely contribute to the historiography on female graphic designers in the 20th century, whose contributions remain largely understudied and overshadowed by their male counterparts. The research also contributes to a lesser-known side of Swiss graphic design history by providing scholarship on a designer working outside the canon of the Swiss Style. The results are presented in a richly illustrated publication which makes available previously unpublished visual material and represents the first academic monograph on the designer. La Mobilière 2025 Prize awarded to Alfatih Congratulations to ECAL graduate artist Alfatih, who was awarded the Prix La Mobilière 2025 at the recent Salon Art Genève. Born in 1995 and graduating from ECAL in 2018 with a Bachelor s degree in Media & Interaction Design, Alfatih, who lives and works in Lausanne, has been awarded the Prix La Mobilière 2025. Awarded each year, this prize is given to artists whose work is inspired by the issues facing our society, providing a basis for understanding our times. It is accompanied by financial support of CHF 30,000. Through his video installations and interactive works, the artist addresses the different developments in the virtual world and establishes links between fields that are still often considered to be opposed. He questions codes of understanding and their significance for society, while integrating them into the present, creating a space for diversity and pluralistic perspectives. ‘The apparent lightness of Alfatih s digital images transports us into stories in which reflections on certain periods of life, memory and death follow one another and intertwine, explains Nicolas Brulhart, artistic director of the Kunsthalle Friart in Fribourg, which nominated Alfatih for the Prix Mobilière 2025. @alfatiharufa alfatih.world

ECAL at artgenève

ECAL at artgenève,30.01–02.02.2025,Palexpo, Geneva For Art Genève 2025, Bachelor Fine Arts students have come up with ‘Dont Be Happy, Worry , a creation that grew out of a workshop given by the American artist Kenneth Goldsmith. This collaborative project by ECAL Bachelor Fine Arts students challenges conventional perspectives on art and meaning. Inspired by an intense and thought-provoking workshop by Kenneth Goldsmith, the students explored subtle signs of life and everyday details, transforming wandering thoughts into a carpet: not as a design, but as a detour; not as a statement, but as a collection of overlooked absurdities. It s a soft landing for stray thoughts, misplaced objects, and the kind of meaning that sneaks up on you, waiting to trip you up when you least expect it. Kenneth Goldsmith is an American poet, artist and critic, founder of the online archive ubuweb.com and professor at University of Pennsylvania. His writing is motivated by his own 2007 manifesto “Uncreative Writing” and is often a collage of found material. He s the author of books and critical texts, radio shows and installations and was appointed Moma s first Poet Laureate.DATES AND SCHEDULES30.01–02.02.2025 12pm to 9pm except Thursday and Sunday from 12pm to 7pmVENUEPalexpo, GenèveWEBSITEartgenèveOPENINGThursday, January 30, 2025, 2-9 pm by invitationSTUDENTS, , , , , , , , , , , , , Lisa Okhrimchuk, INVITED ARTISTKenneth GoldsmithHEAD OF PROGRAMME

Félix Vallotton, un hommage

Félix Vallotton, un hommage,29.01–25.05.2025,Musée Jenisch, Vevey To celebrate the hundredth anniversary of the death of Félix Vallotton, the Musée Jenisch Vevey has invited ECAL Bachelor Fine Arts to pay tribute to this emblematic Swiss artist in a group exhibition. Inspired by Félix Vallotton s engraving practice, which captured the atmosphere of late 19th-century Parisian society, Denis Savary invited students in ECAL s Bachelor Fine Arts program to design a collective exhibition of printed images. To evoke Félix Vallotton s contemporary and typically Parisian spaces for disseminating images and ideas, Morris columns are recreated and scattered throughout the museum. These pieces of street furniture, conceived as modular exhibition devices, house a motley production of printed images, leaflets, posters and butterflies that reflect the cultural offerings and voices of the present day. Like the original models, these columns also provide a multi-functional interior space, serving as a storeroom, public toilet or telephone booth.DATES & SCHEDULE29.01-25.05.2025 Tuesday-Sunday, 11am-6pmVENUEMusée Jenisch Vevey Av. de la Gare 2, 1800 VeveyOPENINGJanuary 28, 2025 at 6.30pmWEBSITEmuseejenisch.ch

Le pavillon de l'élégance Project
Le pavillon de l'élégance

Le pavillon de l élégance Each group was tasked with creating a series of fashion images by appropriating or subverting visual codes from existing images. Everyone approached this exercise with creativity, exploring a variety of references, whether iconic fashion shots, works of art, or visuals from popular culture. Once all the series were completed, they were compiled into a printed and bound magazine. The assembly of the images gave rise to a unique object, where each project found its place within a coherent and visually striking whole. This magazine thus became the tangible trace of this collective exploration of fashion imagery and its multiple reinterpretations.

SWISS DESIGN NETWORK SYMPOSIUM Event
SWISS DESIGN NETWORK SYMPOSIUM

SWISS DESIGN NETWORK SYMPOSIUM,04–05.12.2024,ECAL, Renens Design disciplines have entered the academic world in Switzerland relatively recently. Swiss design schools have only been required to perform research since the end of the 20th century to be qualified as universities of applied arts. Yet what shape does this research take? Design has become an academic discipline producing original knowledge in traditional formats. However, the discipline has designerly ways of knowing that are yet to be fully recognised and understood. The paradigm of design research, or research through design, supplements new knowledge with the production of new designs, such as prototypes, visualisations, performances, and exhibitions. These new, non-strictly bibliographic formats are relevant for their impact on design schools and audiences. Moreover, AI technologies threaten the scientific paper format as the ultimate form of knowledge transmission. This symposium questions the status of design within the academic system and examines how knowledge is produced by design disciplines. It aims to provide examples of virtuous practices and discuss the relevance of design research as a framework in the medium and long terms. We invited practice- and theory-based contributions anchored in design disciplines and cross- or transdisciplinary approaches that present examples of research through design, discuss methodological and epistemological issues, and offer novel ways of approaching practice-based research.DATES & SCHEDULE04–05.12.2024 Free entry under registrationWEBSITEresearchday.chVENUEECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne Av. du Temple 5 1020 Renens

It is a tribute to volcanologists and volcanoes, exploring themes such as human smallness and the fascination of the immensity of natural forces. Divided into two parts, the narrative opposes the vision of a volcanologist getting as close as possible to a crater, to that of the god of fire, forges and volcanoes, the eponym of the experience. Vulcan is inspired by the work of Haroun Tazieff and the couple Katia and Maurice Krafft, and is an extension of a reflection begun during my thesis on the reconstruction of myths using digital tools. ECAL X KVADRAT - SUIT UP Project
ECAL X KVADRAT - SUIT UP

ECAL X KVADRAT - SUIT UP For this project, the students had to design a seat, or rather requalify and rehabilitate a chair or armchair using existing models such as the monobloc, aluminium bistro chair, or deck chair, as the base structure. Employing Kvadrat upholstery textiles, the designs had to be reversible, meaning it should not alter the existing structure. While the original function of the chair could be maintained or altered, the proposals aimed to improved the comfort and aesthetic character of the seats. RAVIOLI CHAIR by The entire project aims to enhance an affordable chair – the Transat – by bringing the chair, which is often associated with being "accessible, practical, for outdoor use," indoors and giving it a more unique and comfortable design. Using fabrics, padding materials, and a sewing machine, where technique plays a central role, the focus is on an intensive exploration of different ways to manipulate textiles in order to create an exceptional quilted pattern. The chair is completely covered, so the original shape disappears, and no association with the Transat can be made. The Transat is thus used as a framework to create a new indoor lounge chair. Some say that the best product [sustainability speaking] is the one that already exists. SUIT UP aimed to make us reflect on our relationship with furniture, the comfort it brings us and the legacy of upholstered furniture; to take a critical look at how these products are manufactured, distributed, enjoyed and discarded today. Following a selection of the projects.Strapp by Strapp utilizes the existing wooden frame of the deck chair to hold two sets of fabric loops tactfully sewn and interwoven with each other. "Strapp" can be mounted onto the chair frame during its assembly, thus becoming an integral part of the chair. The woven structure appears flat but adjusts comfortably to the person seated. The Strapp design was created to enhance the comfort of the deck chair. The material used is a cool wool upholstery fabric, making the seat soft and cozy. YUPPIE CHAIR by Yuppie Chair is a project aimed at creating a cover for the monobloc chair, thus transforming this outdoor chair into an indoor chair. The project draws more inspiration from the fashion world, as in its initial phase, it was oriented toward bridal gowns. The goal was to design a cover inspired by the yuppie style of the 1980s, using Kvadrat upholstery fabric. It was necessary to find a way to merge the language of fashion with furniture. The cinching detail evokes how tailored jackets are themselves cinched.Link by Link is a conference chair cover. Designed to instantly transform an aluminum chair into a comfortable, practical chair that can be connected to other chairs. A zipper linking the chairs allows them to be attached, providing safety and organization during gatherings at events.SIENNE by Sienne is a cover that easily fits over aluminum terrace chairs to transform them into indoor armchairs during the winter months. Thanks to two zippers, the cover can be adjusted to take shape. The edges fold over the sides, providing wide and comfortable armrests.VANO by Vano is a waterproof cover specifically designed to fit aluminum bistro-style chairs. Composed of two parts, it retains the stackability of the original chair while adding extra comfort. Terrace enthusiasts can once again enjoy the pleasure of savoring their drinks outdoors. The toggle buttons create an ingenious fastening system that gives the chair its enveloping appearance.

Sara De Brito Faustino winner of the Prix Françoise Champoud 2024 Article
Sara De Brito Faustino winner of the Prix Françoise Champoud 2024

Sara De Brito Faustino winner of the Prix Françoise Champoud 2024 Congratulations to photographer Sara De Brito Faustino, ECAL graduate, who wins the Prix Françoise Champoud 2024, an award that will support the development of her promising artistic career. The Fondation Françoise Champoud has just awarded its annual prize to talented photographer , an alumnus of ECAL. The prize, endowed with CHF 50,000, is awarded alternately in the fields of lyrical art, performing arts and art & design, supporting high-potential emerging artists. Sara De Brito Faustino, awarded in the art & design category, won over the jury with her striking artistic project, which explores the meanders of memory through disturbing and poetic images. Graduating with a Bachelor s degree in photography from ECAL, Sara De Brito Faustino distinguished herself with her graduation work A Home with No Roof (previously named “Toute petite et vilaine”), a project that had already won her the Vevey Images Prize at the ECAL graduation ceremony in 2023 . His singular approach consists in reconstructing, from fabricated and cobbled-together elements, scenes evoking missing memories, like fragments of recomposed reality. According to Florence Grivel, journalist and member of the jury, her work is “powerful and gripping, in which an ambivalent and troubling reality is narrated, in which the missing memory is restored from surprising elements”. Winning the Prix Françoise Champoud is a major boost for this young photographer. “This financial support is a precious help that will enable me to pursue my projects and devote myself fully to my art”, confided Sara. The artist plans to exhibit her project A Home with No Roof in its final version at L Appartement, Vevey, from November 27. This monographic exhibition will mark a crucial stage in her career, revealing to the public a universe that is both intimate and universal, shaped by meticulous and singular artistic techniques. Sara De Brito Faustino, who is also an academic assistant at the ECAL, is determined to build on this success, with the support of the Champoud Foundation. Her passion for photography, born in adolescence and nourished by intense personal experiences, is now recognized by prestigious institutions.

Athena Promises Event
Athena Promises

Athena Promises,11.10.2024,MISC Athens Following a workshop in Athens with artist Nikolas Ventourakis, students in ECAL s Bachelor of Photography programme are unveiling an exhibition that captures the contrasts of the city, between its ancient heritage and contemporary challenges. Athens, famous for its historic role as the cradle of democracy, has also been marked in its contemporary history by the financial and social crises that have rocked Greece. Recently, the city has attracted worldwide attention for major events such as the 2004 Olympic Games and the DOCUMENTA exhibition in 2017. Today, Athens is undergoing unbridled urban development, while coping with the effects of climate change. Heat waves, floods, forest fires: here, myth and reality collide, antiquity rubs shoulders with modernity, and this sprawling metropolis, home to almost half of Greece s population, becomes the scene of an ideological clash. At the heart of one of the oldest cities in the world, the students immersed themselves in a city rich in contrasts. They explored the city through documentary, staged and performative eyes. In the warm, golden sunshine, they explored a wide range of themes, from derelict Olympic infrastructure to the ambitious $8 billion housing project, The Ellinikon, as well as the testimonies of young Athenian artists. ECAL LECTURE – MATHIEU LEHANNEUR Event
ECAL LECTURE – MATHIEU LEHANNEUR

ECAL LECTURE – MATHIEU LEHANNEUR,08.10.2024,IKEA Auditorium, ECAL ECAL welcomes Mathieu Lehanneur for a lecture on October 08, 2024. There s a word that often comes back to Mathieu Lehanneur s lips: magic. The French designer infuses his work with a touch of the irrational to arouse curiosity, provoke emotion or evoke wonder. Known the world over for his work and his talent for bringing together art, design, science and technology, the creator, born in 1974, is one of the few designers of his generation to embrace so many creative fields. His radically multidisciplinary approach is illustrated by the broad typology of his projects: from objects to architecture, from art to products, from one-off pieces to cutting-edge technologies. Mathieu Lehanneur produces and distributes his creations worldwide via his eponymous brand. Following the inauguration of the Factory, the designer will unveil across the Atlantic his new Pied-à-terre in New York in spring 2024. This exclusive space, located in one of the city s most beautiful skyscrapers, will be the setting for his universe and the dialogue between his latest pieces. Mathieu Lehanneur is a leading figure in the world of design, and winner of the “Grand Prix de la Création de la Ville de Paris”. His work can be found in some of the world s most important public and private collections, including the Centre Pompidou and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, as well as the Museum of Modern Art in New York and SF-MoMA in San Francisco.DATES & SCHEDULE08.10.2024 6pm Free entryVENUEIKEA Auditorium, ECAL

We Do The Rest - PERFORMANCE WORKSHOP & EXHIBITION Project
We Do The Rest - PERFORMANCE WORKSHOP & EXHIBITION

We Do The Rest - PERFORMANCE WORKSHOP & EXHIBITION From image capture to distribution, "We do the Rest" explores the notions of effort and bodily constraint in contemporary photographic mechanics. Through a series of spectacular and deceptive per-formances, Master Photography students at ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne translate the gestures and the actions of visual fabrication with humor and absurdity. The project, conducted by Augustin Lignier, recalls the radical performances of the 60%, revisited in the digital age, when audiences are mainly virtual, and relationships are reduced to pixels. In search of permanent validation, we evolve in a digital theater governed by cameras, screens, and algorithms. We invite you to dive into these simulations, for real. And it s up to you to press the shutter... "We do the Rest" was created as a workshop during the second semester and was further developed in Italy, where it celebrated its premiere at the Biennale dell Immagine di Chiasso. The constantly reimagined project was later presented at the Rencontres d Arles 2024 photography festival, where it found a wide audience. The third and final edition was presented at ECAL in September 2024, closing the circle and illustrating the dynamic development process.

ECAL at Swiss Photomonth Event
ECAL at Swiss Photomonth

ECAL at Swiss Photomonth,03.10.2024,ECAL, Renens ECAL presents “We Do The Rest”, a performative event on the occasion of Swiss Photomonth. “We Do The Rest” is a performative event that questions photographic limits. Together with artist Augustin Lignier, students in the Master of Photography program at ECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne invite the public to an exceptional evening in their school s monumental hall. From image capture to distribution, “We Do The Rest” explores the notions of effort and bodily constraint in contemporary photographic mechanics. Through a series of sometimes spectacular, sometimes discreet and minimal performances, students in the Master of Photography program at ECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne question, through their gestures and actions, the structure of image-making. From apnea photography to the confinement of framing, from mental images to the bubbles of social networks, all the projects test photographic limits through the body. The project, directed by artist Augustin Lignier, revisits the radical performances of the 60s in the digital age, when audiences are mainly virtual and relationships reduced to pixels. Through still images and videos, through words, movements and sounds performed for one evening only in the monumental hall of the ECAL, we invite you to experience photography differently, to immerse yourself in these simulations, for real. And it s up to you to press the shutter...VENUEECAL Avenue du Temple 5 1020 RenensDATES & SCHEDULE03.10.2024 6pm–8.45pmWEBSITEswissphotomonth.chART DIRECTION, , HEAD OF PROGRAMMESTUDENTS, , , , , , , , , , , ,

It was therefore only natural to entrust this 6th cuvée to one of the region s emblematic estates, and to invite you to share in its discovery in a moment of conviviality and remembrance. He designed typewriters, cameras and record players, as well as complete workstations and exhibition stands. From the 1970s onwards, in addition to his position as head of design at HPI, he pursued a freelance career, designing chronographs for Omega and studies of electric shavers for Braun. His work dates back to the Glorious Thirties and is marked by the advent of new technologies (computers in office automation) and new materials (plastic). A hard worker, Richard Authier was always thinking globally, with an eye to end users. As a result, he contributed to advertising posters, instructions for use and packaging. His work, often credited to the name of the company, won international awards. A book will showcase this research work, highlighting the person of Richard Authier and all the products he designed. GTE: Renens City Stories

GTE: Renens City Stories A one week workshop where the first-year students were taught the basics of Blender and how to achieve a similar visual language to that of early era video game graphics. Students were asked to create a looping animation or Story from the perspective of a character in the city of Renens where ECAL is based. These were then packaged into a playable game displayed on a series of CRT monitors controlled using a PS1 controller. The game itself was completely run in Blender using Geometry Nodes & Python.
