Julie Ryser – Dupliréalité Dupliréalité aims to immerse us into reproductions of places of life that are essential to an individual s existence. The cities explored include La Chaux-de-Fonds, Lausanne and Renens, which have a direct link with my own reality. This research is based on a conceptual analysis of duplitecture, a recent architectural movement that replicates and relocates famous buildings. This analytical treatment takes place in a fixed medium, i.e. a book, a lasting object that has the power to cross the ages like a building and that comes to life through its materiality. The project reconstructs the process of a duplitect; thanks to the proximity of today s media, everything is within reach and distance disappears.

In 1821, a decree of the Grand Council of the Canton of Vaud formalised the opening of the Ecole cantonale de dessin, housed in Cité-Devant near the Cathedral in Lausanne. Twenty years later, the school integrated the newly built Musée Arlaud, located in the city centre and which also bears the name of the first director of both institutions, Marc-Louis Arlaud. For almost 150 years, the establishment has had many personalities as directors, moved to various locations in the region and had different names, before finally settling on Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne in 1986. Since then, the acronym ECAL has become popular as the reputation of the institution has grown, and it is now considered one of the best art and design schools in the world thanks to the countless successes of its teaching staff, students and alumni. Real Facts A collection of neophyte views on current agriculture through the prism of design. Invited by the Musée des Arts Décoratifs et du Design de Bordeaux (madd-bordeaux), second-year Bachelor of Industrial Design students at ECAL, under the guidance of designers Erwan Bouroullec and Adrien Rovero, have given form to their observations and questions about the current agricultural landscape. "Real Facts" is a collection of neophyte points of view on current agriculture, through the prism of design. This project was created at the initiative of Constance Rubini, director of the madd-bordeaux, on the occasion of the exhibition "Paysans designers, un art du vivant" at the Musée des Arts décoratifs et du Design de Bordeaux (madd-bordeaux) presented from 14 July 2021 to 17 January 2022. Paolo Roversi, photographe de mode, Paris en conversation avec Milo Keller, responsable du Département Photographie Mardi 25 mai 2021 à 18h En ligne, YouTube https://youtu.be/eezton4cKO0 Né en 1947 à Ravenne (Italie), Paolo Roversi est un photographe connu pour ses portraits saisissants et intimes ainsi que son langage visuel classique. Ses photographies se situent entre passé et présent, produisant ainsi des images à la fois progressistes et familières. L intérêt de Roversi pour la photographie a commencé dès son plus jeune âge lors d un voyage en Espagne, ce qui l a incité à construire une chambre noire pour tirer ses photographies en noir et blanc. Il a lancé sa carrière professionnelle en 1970 par des missions de photo-journalisme, mais s est rapidement orienté vers la mode. Après une période d assistance de Laurence Sackman, Roversi a photographié des éditoriaux de mode et des campagnes publicitaires, qui ont fait de lui l un des plus grands créateurs d images. Au début des années 1980, il a ajouté le Polaroid grand format à sa pratique, un moyen de communication qui continue de renforcer son style caractéristique. Ses photographies ont été publiées dans le monde entier dans des magazines tels que Vogue, W Magazine ou Vanity Fair. Il a également collaboré avec les plus grandes maisons de mode et beauté telles que Comme des Garçons, Dior, Guerlain, Armani, Chanel et Lancôme. Au cours de ses 40 ans de carrière, Roversi a publié plusieurs ouvrages, dont Angeli, Libretto, Nudi, Studio et Secrets, et son travail a été exposé dans des galeries et des musées du monde entier.

Prior to this, he was curator and head of the Migrateurs programme at the Musée d Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris. Since his first show World Soup (The Kitchen Show) in 1991, he has curated more than 350 exhibitions: his recent shows include It s Urgent at Luma Arles (2019-2021) and Enzo Mari at Triennale Milano (2020). In 2011, he received the CCS Bard Award for Curatorial Excellence and in 2015 was awarded the International Folkwang Prize, and most recently he was honoured by the Appraisers Association of America with the 2018 Award for Excellence in the Arts. Together with Eric Troncy, she is also the co-founder of Frog magazine and regularly contributes to various publications such as Artforum, artpress, Beaux Arts Magazine, Purple or Self Service. She has organised numerous exhibitions and curated, among others, the European Biennial Manifesta 4 in Frankfurt (2001) and the 9th Lyon Biennial (2007), whose artistic direction she shared with Hans Ulrich Obrist. Since 2006, she has also directed an alternative and itinerant academic institution, L Ecole de Stéphanie. Jean-Jacques Rousseau inspires the ECAL/HEAD Master in Cinema,21.04.2021,Maison de Rousseau et de la Littérature (MRL), Geneva A l occasion de la réouverture de la Maison de Rousseau et de la Littérature (MRL) à Genève à partir du 21 avril 2021, les étudiant·e·s du Master Cinéma ECAL/HEAD présentent une série de films dans le cadre du Parcours Rousseau. A l occasion de la réouverture de la Maison de Rousseau et de la Littérature (MRL) à Genève à partir du 21 avril 2021, les étudiant·e·s du Master Cinéma ECAL/HEAD (Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne/Haute école d art et de design Genève) présentent une série de films dans le cadre du Parcours Rousseau, lequel a été scénographié par l architecte zurichois Tristan Kobler du bureau Holzer Kobler et co-scénarisé par deux spécialistes de Rousseau – Martin Rueff et Guillaume Chenevière. Ce parcours perpétue et actualise la pensée du du célèbre philosophe suisse, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, en la confrontant aux défis de notre époque: éducation, nature et environnement, laïcité, citoyenneté, bonheur. De septembre 2020 à janvier 2021, quinze étudiant·e·s du Master Cinéma ECAL/HEAD – cinq en Réalisation, trois en Scénario, quatre en Son, trois en Montage – ont relevé le défi majeur de faire dialoguer de manière cohérente la dimension historique et littéraire de Jean-Jacques Rousseau avec une approche personnelle et créative par le biais d objets filmiques (documentaire, fiction, film de montage, film d archives...). Chacun·e a participé à la conception, réalisation, post-production des films – en mélangeant les équipes et les rôles (réalisation, montage, son, scénario…). Onze oeuvres sont ainsi à découvrir dans le cadre du parcours. Each participant took part in the conception, direction and post-production of the films - mixing teams and roles (direction, editing, sound, script...). ECAL Masterclass: Emmanuel Carrère,20.04.2021 ECAL Masterclass: Emmanuel Carrère – Writer, screenwriter, director, Paris A l occasion d une Carte Blanche en tant qu invité d honneur dans le cadre de Visions du réel et d un hommage à la Cinémathèque suisse. Emmanuel Carrère Ecrivain, scénariste et réalisateur Mardi 20 avril à 14h (CET) Retransmission en ligne sur: www.visionsdureel.ch Né à Paris en 1957, Emmanuel Carrère fait ses études à l Institut d études politiques (Sciences Po) et effectue son service militaire en Indonésie. De retour en France, il amorce sa carrière comme critique de cinéma pour Positif et Télérama. En 1982, il écrit son premier livre, une monographie dédiée au cinéaste allemand Werner Herzog. Après un essai biographique remarqué sur Philip K. Dick (Je suis vivant et vous êtes morts, 1993) dans lequel il expérimente déjà ce qui deviendra par la suite son style, il oriente sa plume vers une recherche formelle cherchant à révéler la part de romanesque dans un matériau entièrement véridique, dont L Adversaire est emblématique. Ce récit troublant consacré à l Affaire Romand, adapté au cinéma en 2002 par Nicole Garcia, deviendra le premier grand succès de sa carrière. Par la suite, Emmanuel Carrère navigue avec intérêt et aisance entre les media; en plus d être journaliste et écrivain, il est scénariste et cinéaste. Auteur aux interrogations multiples, il pose la question du réel, des croyances ou de nos introspections. Son premier long métrage Retour à Kotelnitch (2003), sélectionné à La Mostra de Venise, mêle Histoire russe et histoire personnelle. En 2005, il adapte son propre roman, édité aux éditions P.O.L, La Moustache (présenté à la Quinzaine des réalisateurs), avec Vincent Lindon et Emmanuelle Devos. Tout au long d une oeuvre aux formes plurielles, Emmanuel Carrère – récompensé par le prestigieux prix Renaudot pourLimonoven 2011 – a brillamment questionné l opacité de la fiction et l étrangeté du monde tangible. Son dernier livre Yoga est un constat intime et abrasif, non dénué d humour, sur l état du monde contemporain et des âmes tourmentées qui le peuplent. Basé sur le travail documentaire de la journaliste Florence Aubenas, Le quai de Ouistreham, son nouveau film éponyme avec Juliette Binoche dans le rôle principal, sortira en 2021. VideoArt Festival Locarno (1980–2001) – Symposium Online,30–31.03.2021,Online, Zoom Fondé par le galeriste Rinaldo Bianda, le VideoArt Festival Locarno constitue un événement pionnier en Europe dans la présentation et la théorisation de l art vidéo. Founded by the art dealer Rinaldo Bianda, the VideoArt Festival Locarno (1980-2001) was a pioneer platform for the presentation of the video art in Europe. Its series of colloquium and round tables organised by theorist and museum director René Berger made it a central platform for the theoretical exploration of the impact of video and, more broadly, of technology, on perception, as well as of the emergence of ‘technoculture and the reorganisation of knowledge. Concluding the research project supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation and based at ECAL, this colloquium seeks to revisit the VideoArt Festival and critically address its history and its role in championing and shaping video and new media art in Europe, through discussions and presentations with its protagonists as well as by experts in the field. ECAL Master Fine Arts Symposium,23.03.2021,Online, Zoom ECAL Master Fine Arts Symposium: "Frantz Fanon s Critical Legacy : From the Alienation of the Individual to the Emancipation of Practices" Psychiatrist, essayist, theorist, and Algerian independence activist, Frantz Fanon (born in Fort-de-France in 1925, died in Bethesda in 1961) is a major figure of anti-colonial theory. From the decolonisation of the self, developed in "Black Skin, White Masks", to the use of violence in "The Wretched of The Earth", he fought against the conditions of a subaltern existence to go beyond race and colonial systems. The symposium seeks to open a conversational space, taking up Fanon s attitude of refusal to consider contemporary art practices, structures, and theories. In an effort to question the structures of contemporary society and the artistic field, lecturers share tools to become “conscious of [our] unconscious”, asking if the consciousness of structures instigates a renewal of thoughts and forms. En partenariat avec le Festival international de cinéma documentaire «Cinéma du réel» à Paris pour le 20 mars à 14h Né en 1977, le metteur en scène, cinéaste et essayiste suisse Milo Rau est l une des figures artistiques les plus sollicitées et controversées de sa génération. Pour Milo Rau, l art est avant tout un «sport de combat» et une confrontation à la violence politique qui traverse l histoire récente. Avec les membres du NTGent qu il dirige et de l International Institute of Political Murder qu il a fondé en 2007, il se livre à des recherches historiques minutieuses avant de s emparer de son sujet. En mêlant Histoire, Art et Politique, Milo Rau met en oeuvre un processus de création unique, qui entremêle les niveaux de lecture pour provoquer l intime, la compassion, la solidarité et l éveil politique. C est ainsi qu il évoque «Les Derniers Jours des Ceausescu» (2009), donne à entendre la «Déclaration de Breivik» (2012), convoque les génocidaires rwandais avec «Hate Radio» (2012) ou provoque le réel dans «Le Tribunal sur le Congo» (2015, adapté au cinéma en 2018). Milo Rau vient de mettre en scène «La Clémence de Titus» de Mozart à l Opéra de Genève. Son tout dernier film «Le Nouvel Evangile» est présenté en sélection officielle au FIFDH et sera distribué en Suisse dès mars 2021. ECAL Masterclass: Noémie Lvovsky,05.02.2021,Online, Zoom ECAL Masterclass : Noémie Lvovsky - Director, actress, screenwriter, Paris Dans le cadre du Festival du court métrage de Clermont-Ferrand et de L Atelier – Ecole éphémère de Cinéma. Diplômée de La Fémis, Noémie Lvovsky se fait connaître comme scénariste de deux films d Arnaud Desplechin: La Vie des morts (1991) et La Sentinelle (1992). Un an plus tard, elle réalise son premier long métrage, Oublie-moi. Son deuxième long pour le cinéma, La Vie ne me fait pas peur, lui vaut le Prix Jean-Vigo et le Léopard d argent au Festival de Locarno en 1999. Depuis, elle a mis en scène quatre autres films, dont Camille redouble (2012) et le dernier en date Demain et tous les jours (2017). Par ailleurs, Noémie Lvovsky brille en tant que scénariste pour Valeria Bruni Tedeschi notamment et participe à de nombreux succès en tant que comédienne dans des oeuvres telles que Ma femme est une actrice d Yvan Attal (2001), Rois et reine d Arnaud Desplechin (2004), Les Beaux Gosses de Riad Sattouf (2009) ou encore Chocolat de Roschdy Zem (2016). Phantom Power Phantom Power questions the social configurations of the non-audible narratives of aural practices in performances and public sound installations. How does a performance or an installation acquire substance? How does it come to matter to the people who experience it? And do we account for it? The research project Phantom Power attempts to answer these broad questions by means of a descriptive study of three public performances and sound installations organised at ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne. Each case has been chosen for the specificity of what the invited artists (Leif Elggren, Arto Lindsay, Marja-leena Sillanpää, La Monte Young and Marian Zazeela) call upon: electronic voice phenomena (EVP), the interiority of sound, and transport through sound. All three are the object of an ethnographic approach using original methodology: for each event, one day is devoted to the experience of performances and installations, followed by a discussion between the public and the artists, monitored by guest researchers (Vinciane Despret, Salomé Voegelin and Juliette Volcler). The next day 1st-year BA students in Fine Arts re-enact the performances in front of the artists themselves. In other words, the chosen methodology offers a collective conceptual analysis on the first day and a collective analysis through practice on the second day. This is meant to help produce a field survey account of sound and of the narratives and the relational modes of existence of the works. The Emergence of Video Art in Europe (1960–1980): history, theory, sources and archives. To date, there is no European-wide history of video art. It is this gap that the present research programme proposes to fill. Firstly by gathering data on the artists, the works and the events that enabled the emergence of this new artistic practice in the 1960s, or that were important in its development in the following years in Europe, and by bringing to light specific national conditions of production and distribution. This programme is based on an initial mapping of video art on a European scale undertaken between 2016 and 2020 thanks to the organisation of research seminars at the Bibliothèque nationale de France (BnF), the Institut d histoire de l art in Paris (INHA) and ECAL in partnership with the Université Paris 8. This first research programme was jointly funded by the Arts H2-H laboratory of excellence and then ESTHC, with ECAL and the BnF as partners. This indexing should be continued in many other regions with the aim of transnational rewriting. The objective of the research project is twofold. On the one hand, it aims to re-evaluate continental production, to take the measure of its richness and variety, and to identify a European identity – mixed, plural, open, but nevertheless forming a cultural whole – in the practice of video art. On the other hand, the aim is to rewrite the history of this medium on an international scale, counterbalancing the America-centric character of the specialised literature on the subject in order to draw other topographies, which also include Japan or South America, with Europe constituting a node within a wider network. In order to carry out this project to renew the approach to video art, both historiographically and theoretically, we are relying on the network of some fifty national and international specialists, researchers, archive holders, artists, and witnesses that the previous programme enabled us to establish. By questioning the medium of video, the aim is also to contribute to the creation of an archaeology of new media in Europe through a series of publications and an exhibition. It consists of fifteen large-format photographs taken during the confinement period by students of the ECAL Bachelor Photography. Locked up in their apartments, alone or sometimes in shared apartments, the photographers often had only themselves as a model and had to deal with their domestic environment in order to conceive a project. If loneliness or boredom can be feel here and there, these images reflect above all the power of imagination. This Suissimage/SSA Société Suisse des Auteurs award, which honors emerging talent, presented 27 short films of all genres. It should be noted that the film was partly produced by Ketsia Stocker and the sound was the work of Vuk Vukmanovic, both of them in the framework of their specialization in Master Cinema as well. With the participation also of Theodora Menthonnex from the option Sound of Bachelor Cinema. En triant, elle s interroge: pourquoi garder ? A travers ces apparitions, elle se raconte au fil des évènements qui ont construit ses idées à propos de la transmission familiale, de la construction du genre et de la liberté. La découverte des films d archives de ma grand-mère me permet d explorer les regards filmiques des femmes de ma famille et de partir à la recherche de ce qui façonne leur vie à l échelle la plus intime. Director s statement After discovering my grandmother s home movies I sought to explore the filmic outlook of the women in my family and find out what shaped their lives on the most intimate scale. I assisted Monique as she began sorting out her whole life, her objects as well as her memories. Images of the past blended with those of her present daily life as I filmed in 16mm what I hoped to keep from her. The film anchors the presences that flow from my grandmother to her world. Together, we address family transmission, gender constructs and motherhood.

Sofia explores the building and meets new inspiring people. A thousand opportunities seem to open up for her. Carla, on the other hand, has to get used to the idea of her daughter leaving. In this closed-door environment, mother and daughter try to find a new balance in their relationship. Comment A mother and her daughter in a hotel room, a few meters from what was their house... gone up in smoke, taking their common past with them. The film, like a parenthesis in this place of transit that is "La Rondinella", where strangers meet and make memories, spaces of intimacy, a place where Sofia and her mother seek to rebuild, with the fragility and awkwardness that characterize the love that binds a daughter to her mother. Nikita invests the enclosed space by the character, Sofia, formidably interpreted by Elena Stoll, who bewitches us by her presence, her face at the same time babyish and feminine, and with whom Nikita continues his collaboration. Sofia draws us into her boredom, her expectations, her encounters, her solitary wanderings, but above all into her impulse for life and renewal. For Rondinella is also the portrait of this youth, full of dreams and obstacles. Nikita Merlini directs a sensitive, delicate, hypnotic film that seizes time. This vulnerable time. In a passageway two empty wooden modules are placed side by side. From one end to the other, an acrylic plate acts as a crown, unifying the whole to create a portico. Three rollers are installed at its foot. These are bath towels on which banknotes have been printed. Rolled up and placed on the inner and outer edges of the structure, they reveal their amount.

The powerlessness to conform to the male stereotype crushes my individual identity, forcing a constant struggle between desire and prohibition. With a twisted gaze, yielding to a scopic impulse, I conduct obsessive research on sexuality that takes the form of a ritual. Creating apocryphal and sexual ex-votos, I seek to fix imprints in plaster and ceramics as on photosensitive surfaces.»
ECAL Masterclass: Danielle Lessovitz,27.10.2020,IKEA Auditorium, ECAL ECAL Masterclass: Danielle Lessovitz – Screenwriter and film director, Brooklyn/New York ECAL Masterclass Danielle Lessovitz, screenwriter and film director, New York Tuesday 27 October 2020 at 6 pm, IKEA Auditorium At 6.30pm, screening of the "Port Authority" movie Within the framework of the ECAL Residency program at La Becque, Danielle Lessovitz, American filmmaker, has been invited to teach in the Cinema Department of ECAL for the fall semester 2020-2021.During her stay at the artist residency located in La Tour-de-Peilz, she will simultaneously work on various her future film projects. Born in 1982, Danielle Lessovitz is a screenwriter and film director based in Brooklyn, (New York). She studied documentary film at Northwestern University and fine arts at New York University Tisch School of the Arts. She currently works as a professor at Rutgers University. Her practice varies between filmmaking and artistic or video installations. Her projects typically focus on marginalized communities and she often stars non-professional actors. She is a part of the Brooklyn Filmmakers Collective. She directed her first short film, Batteries, in 2009. In 2017, she co-wrote and co-produced the film "Mobile Homes", which was showcased in Cannes at la “Quinzaine des Réalisateurs”. In 2019, she directed her first feature, "Port Authority", which was executive-produced by Martin Scorsese and presented as a world premiere at Festival de Cannes as part of the “Un Certain Regard” official selection. On the occasion of this Masterclass, Danielle Lessovitz will be in conversation with Jasmin Basic, Coordinator of the Master Cinema ECAL/HEAD (discussion will be held in English). The Masterclass will be followed by a screening of Port Authority at 6.30pm. The film in set in the ballroom scene of Harlem and narrates the encounter between a young white man and a group of Afro-Americans queer dancers.

Peltre s lightweight, smooth, durable and heat resistance surface as for many decades made it perfect for kitchenware, but other products applications are less common nowadays. Seeing an opportunity to challenge this industry and seek new fields of applications, second-year Bachelor Industrial Design students of ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne are proposing a fresh take on garden furniture and accessories that takes full benefits of enamelled steel qualities. Being scratch resistant, weatherproof and easy to clean, the enamelled products are keeping it up against the elements. Under the guidance of Swiss designer Francisco Torres, students conceived a range of objects from a simple watering cans, sturdy solar lanterns, playful rocking toy cows, divers plant supports, basic and compact garden tools, multipurpose low tables and resounding cowbells for the backyard menagerie. The exhibited objects where enamelled in Mexico by the skillful craftsmen of Delta Porceltech, in Polotitlán City, Mexico. Human Rights Photography Prize to a graduate of ECAL The Act On Your Future Foundation is very pleased to announce the names of the two winners of the fifth edition of the Human Rights Photography Prize on the theme "No Planet B: Human Rights in Times of Ecological Crisis": Lowena Poole for "Stop Time By Smashing Clocks" (RCA/Royal College of Art, London) and Romain Roucoules for "Global Solutions" (ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne) The Jury thus wished to reward two artists at the beginning of their careers with different profiles and approaches. The prizewinners receive a contribution of CHF 10,000 to be shared between them in order to enable them to produce an exhibition following on from the prize-winning projects. Their work as well as the projects of the other finalists will also be included in the retrospective book that the Foundation will publish to mark the five-year anniversary of the competition. The exhibition of the winning projects and the book will be presented at the Centre de la photographie Genève (CPG) from 27 October to 15 November 2020. Global Solutions par ECAL/Romain Roucoules Following the Brazilian presidential elections, the Amazonian rainforest, an environmental icon forgotten for some twenty years, is returning to the forefront and once again crystallises the general concerns. This project, presented in the form of an installation, brings together modern simulacres from different backgrounds. Distant consequences, close causes. Ce film devient l œuvre phare du cinéma de la Nouvelle Vague, dont Godard est désormais l un des représentants emblématiques. Les années 1960 sont marquées par une œuvre prolixe («Le Petit Soldat», «Le Mépris», «Pierrot le fou», «La Chinoise»…).Les évènements de Mai 68 confirment un changement dans sa façon de concevoir le cinéma et ses films deviennent des étendards politiques. Suite à la réalisation de Bibeleskaes (29 min), film documentaire autoproduit tourné en super 16mm, co-réalisé avec Maryam Goormaghtigh (Avant la fin de l été) et sélectionné au festival Visions du Réel de Nyon, Blaise Harrison réalise 12 courts métrages pour la revue documentaire Cut Up coproduite par Quark productions et ARTE France. Il réalise ensuite Armand, 15 ans l été, documentaire de 50 min coproduit par Les Films du Poisson et ARTE France sélectionné à la Quinzaine des Réalisateurs à Cannes ainsi que dans de nombreux festivals à l étranger, dont le Festival Dei Popoli de Florence où il remporte le Prix du Meilleur Documentaire. Son premier long métrage de fiction Les Particules est sélectionné à la Quinzaine des Réalisateurs au Festival de Cannes 2019 et sort en salles le 5 juin de la même année. Prochains rendez-vous : Du 16 au 20 mars 2020, en collaboration avec le Festival Cinéma du réel : workshop et projection d une sélection de films internationaux au CCS. Juillet 2020 : présentation des films réalisés par les étudiant.e.s. INTERFERENCES – Forty-Four Excuses for Participation and a Zero Mario de Vega with BA Fine Arts and Media & Interaction Design students A collaborative project between Bachelor Fine Arts and Bachelor Media & Interaction Design students from ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne following a workshop led by sound artist Mario de Vega, visiting professor during the fall semester 2019 at ECAL and resident at La Becque | Artists Residency. Through a conceptual approach to sound, this exhibition proposes a scenario in which the eye takes the role of the ear, and vice versa. Within the notion of “Aural Vision”, the presented works result from a short seminar that served as an introduction to a larger educative experience which aims to extend collaborations between Media & Interaction Design and Fine Arts, using sound as a bridge. The project is based on the 45 definitions of the INTERFERENCES publication. It investigates the ongoing developments of timebased media, taking advantage of its benefits and advances, through a critical perspective.
