1st year Documentary Workshop Project
1st year Documentary Workshop

1st year Documentary Workshop 1st year students took part in a documentary workshop led by Benoit Rossel, on the theme of the interview. Professor: Guest teacher (editing): For this first-year documentary workshop, I proposed making a film centered on a character with a particular link to a place. To this end, and before even confronting the real thing, the students were asked to write a purely imaginary synopsis of what their film would be. The aim of this stage was not only to explore the story they were working on, but also to narrow down their field of research. At the end of this first stage, a course was set for achieving their various goals. The search for a protagonist was the second stage, forcing them to confront and adapt to reality. But, as with filming and editing, their choices were guided by this useful and valuable preliminary work. So, in the end, all the films resonate strongly with the imagination of each and every one of them, and beyond the documentary project, they are a portrait of the filmmakers themselves, reflecting something very sensitive about the personalities of each of them. The Images Vevey x ECAL Prize was created in 2021 and strengthens the collaboration between the two institutions. Its aim is to offer a first exhibition experience to a student graduating from the ECAL s Bachelor s or Master s degree in photography. The winning work is presented in the form of a monographic exhibition by Images Vevey on the occasion of its biennial or in its permanent space. In the Cinema of L Appartement, Augustin Lignier, graduated of ECAL s Master of Photography programme, presents Container, his graduation project, which won the Prix Images Vevey x ECAL 2022. The artist built a pristine white cube inside his bedroom and, every day for almost two months, he locked himself inside it. As he repetitively and obsessively triggered the shutter release, he put his body s limits to the test to experiment with the apparatus. This performative and conceptual approach resulted in Container, a project that questions the alienating relationship between a photographer and their camera.DATES AND SCHEDULE06.28–11.05.2023 2pm-6pm Wednesday-Sunday Free entryADDRESSL Appartement – Espace Images Vevey Gare CFF de Vevey Main hall (2nd floor)ARTISTOPENINGTuesday, June 28, 6pm

PROJECTION ECAL - LEVIATHAN Event
PROJECTION ECAL - LEVIATHAN

PROJECTION ECAL - LEVIATHAN,25.05.2023, 18:00,IKEA Auditorium, ECAL Filmed on a fishing boat off the coast of Boston, Leviathan pushes the boundaries of what can be filmed. The projection of this documentary that warns of the threats of intensive fishing as much as it reveals the stunning beauty of the ocean s entrails, will be followed by a meeting with its co-director, Verena Paravel. Born on April 21, 1971 in Neuchâtel (CH), Verena Paravel is a French director, artist and anthropologist. She works at the Sensory Ethnography Lab, a research center at Harvard University. Her work is now part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York and has been screened in numerous festivals such as Berlin, Locarno, New York and Toronto. She has notably directed with Lucien Castaing-Taylor, in 2012 Leviathan, an experimental film about industrial fishing in North America, in 2017 Caniba, about and with Issei Sagawa, a Japanese man accused of killing and eating a Dutch student in Paris in 1981, and in 2022 De Humani Corporis Fabrica, a journey to the heart of the body mixing their images with those recorded by doctors. Verena Paravel is a lecturer in the ECAL/HEAD Master of Film Studies. Leviathan Documentary Directed by Lucien Castaing-Taylor, Verena Paravel Written by Lucien Castaing-Taylor, Verena Paravel United States, United Kingdom, France - 2012 - 87 minutes Filmed on an industrial fishing boat, using a dozen small digital cameras, Leviathan is a documentary of incredible formal innovation and a harrowing plunge into the ship s labyrinthine bowels. Almost entirely without dialogue, the film exposes the brutality and bloodiness of the human-nature-machine encounter. Between anthropological observation and abstract cinematic experience, Lucien Castaing-Taylor and Verena Paravel have created a monstrous and sublime audio-visual opus, whose carnage and shadowy setting add up to nothing less than a seaborne nightmare.

Pop Ups and Masks Project
Pop Ups and Masks

Pop Ups and Masks This workshop focused on staged photography, particularly emphasizing staged portraits. The concentration was on the two essential elements of the portrait: working with the object and manipulating its background. Staged portraits set themselves apart from mere snapshots by actively creating an image, steering clear of reality. Tools like light, background, and pose were employed to craft a deliberate narrative. Individuals were staged, altered in specific ways, adorned with outfits and masks. The workshop delved into the interest in masks as tools for transformation and representation. Throughout the workshop, masks were produced using available means, and they became the central objects of staging. Students photographed and filmed them, capturing the essence of transformation. The second element of the workshop, which focused on the background, pop-up techniques were experimented with. The backdrop, a dynamic part of the narrative, was manipulated using cleverly designed sets and unexpected spatial techniques. The focus was not just on capturing moments but on crafting them, bringing forth stories that transcended the boundaries of reality. The workshop provided a platform for unleashing creativity and experimentation.

Festival HYPER OUEST: HYPER LAB,28.04–07.05.2023,Espace Veillon, Bussigny From April 27 to May 7, ECAL is taking part in Hyper Ouest festival, which will be held in the municipalities of western Lausanne. Bachelors Media & Interaction Design, Graphic Design and Photography students will present the Hyper Lab exhibition in the former Veillon halls. Opening: Thursday, April 27th. Hyper Ouest festival offers the opportunity to (re)discover the western municipalities of Lausanne through concerts, shows, exhibitions, workshops, walks, unusual meetings, and a party venue: Hyper Club. It is in this abandoned factory that Bachelors Media & Interaction Design, Graphic Design, and Photography students present Hyper Lab. The immersive exhibition plunges its audience into an industrial atmosphere composed of video sequences projected onto the worn walls of this exceptional place. ECAL AT VISIONS DU REEL: Masterclass and films Event
ECAL AT VISIONS DU REEL: Masterclass and films

ECAL AT VISIONS DU REEL: Masterclass and films,21–30.04.2023,Théâtre de Marens, Nyon As part of the film festival Visions du Réel (April 21 to 30) in Nyon, Lucrecia Martel will give a masterclass on Tuesday, April 25, organized in partnership with La Cinémathèque suisse. Four films from ECAL Cinema Department students and alumni will also be part of the programmation. MASTERCLASS: LUCRECIA MARTEL Filmmaker and screenwriter Salta, Argentina Tuesday, April 25, 2pm Usine à Gaz 2, Nyon Visions du Réel s guest of honour Lucrecia Martel will give a masterclass, which will explore her body of work and her relationship with reality. A retrospective of her films will also be presented during the edition. Lucrecia Martel gained international fame with her first feature length film La ciénaga (2001), shot in her home region, and has since embodied the resurgence of Argentinian film, both nationally and internationally. The director s filmography, which consists of 4 feature length films and 25 titles in total (including different kinds of projects), has constantly made a mark on her country in a post-dictatorial context, as well as at the most prestigious festivals. Lucrecia Martel s films use a highly sensual cinematographical grammar to examine the existential crisis of the Argentinian middle classes, the inner workings of society and the country s suffocating social mechanism, as well as post-colonial issues. She achieves all this while relentlessly evoking, implicitly, the history of her country and the ghosts that inhabit it. Her attention to detail – particularly to sound, noise and dialogues – and the kaleidoscopic approach of her work are in keeping with a dual tradition that is both oral and adventurous in cinematographical terms, steeped in a joyous cinephilia. Rooted in the filmmaker s very familiar territories and experiences, Lucrecia Martel s body of work borrows from a multitude of genres and offers a rich and fascinating hybridisation of fiction and reality. After Terminal Norte in 2021, she is currently working on new non-fiction feature length film that should be released in 2023. Moderated by Emilie Bujès, artistic director of Visions du Réel and Paolo Moretti, head of ECAL Cinema Department. An event in collaboration with La Cinémathèque suisse Text: Vision du Réel FILMS In the occasion of Visions du Réel from April 21 to 30, 4 films from ECAL Cinema Department and alumni are programmed. MASTER FINE ARTS SYMPOSIUM Event
MASTER FINE ARTS SYMPOSIUM

MASTER FINE ARTS SYMPOSIUM,27–28.03.2023,IKEA Auditorium, ECAL On March 27 and 28, ECAL Master Fine Arts presents a 2-days symposium: The Raving Age. Histories and figures of youth. The symposium is organized as part of the research project The Raving Age. Histories and Figures of Youth, that questions what has come of youth – a conceptual, aesthetic, and political figure that was born with modernity – in the visual arts, popular culture, and the humanities. Conversely, the project addresses what the problematic category of “youth” has brought about in contemporary art and thought and seeks to grasp it as an allegory that will help rethink the “contemporary” through its most lively milieu. These two study days will explore the manifold dimensions of the concept of “youth” as strategic sites to engage with the politics of time and the aesthetic categories of our age. Day 1 will take place in French, Day 2 in English. The Q&A sessions of both days will take place in French and English. DAY 1 - Monday 27 March 9.30am: Welcome coffee 10am: Introduction 10.30am: L innocence de l oeil et le bonhomme-têtard. Dialogue Project
Dialogue

Dialogue As part of the publishing course taught by Gilles Gavillet and Jonathan Hares, the 3rd year students worked on the layout of dialogue. They began by selecting a dialogue that had potential for visual creation. After identifying the graphic challenges of their subject, they defined an editorial solution. Justiciable.net Edition This project highlights a case of corruption and harassment suffered by Franck Blanchard, a police major, within his police station in Aubenas, Ardèche. The newspaper recounts the victim s story, as well as the stages of the investigation and presents various damning evidence against several of his superiors. By Romain Oederlin A way to be reunited A way to be reunited is an editorial project putting in dialogue the universe and the musical, scientific and geographical references of two djs (Marcel Dettmann and Dj Stingray). By Benoît Rochat7-10 Figo Newspaper 7-10 Figo traces the biggest football transfer of the 2000s. This event takes the form of a newspaper with a double print. With a contemporary look, this project graphically materializes the snake s knot that governed this transfer, composed of political and financial stakes... as well as the violence of the fans of the clubs involved. By Antonin MaudryThe Pathmark Shooting of Old Bridge Edition This book recounts the events of the August 31, 2012 shooting at the Pathmark supermarket in Old Bridge, New Jersey. Through the numerous calls made to 911, the edition questions the trivialization of gun violence in the United States by confronting the reader with the panic of the witnesses, staged as a play. by Tessa Roy

Visual Identity Project
Visual Identity

Visual Identity During the visual identity course, the 1st year Graphic Design bachelors had to realize a communication project around a district of Lausanne. MON-REPOS Affiche & carnet de recherche The aim of this project was to create a poster for a fictitious festival taking place in the park of Mon-Repos in Lausanne. This fictitious concert poster seeks to oppose nature and synthetics, in resonance with the historical past of the place; an artificially shaped green space. Par Le flon Carnet de recherche & affiche Although the roofs are at the same level as the ground of the Flon district. This place is inscribed as a floor in the city. It is organized according to a grid of similar rectangular buildings and thus represented by assemblies of blocks inducing the notion of floors by playing on the modification of the perspective. Par Eliot DubiOUCHY Drapeau & carnet de recherches This project of creation of a visual identity is produced for the district of Ouchy in Lausanne. The identity system of this one was reflected from the nautical language and the particularities of this district at the edge of the lake of Geneva. Par MONTCHOISI Carnet de recherches & panneaux The visual identity of the Montchoisi district is based on a struggle between two parties. A population using a set of pictograms in the form of authoritarian signs, against a minority displaying protest posters in order to overthrow order and discipline. Par

L'Or Bleu

Service Design - 2023 Project
Service Design - 2023

Service Design - 2023 During the service design course, the 3rd year of the Graphic Design, Photography and Media & Interaction Design bachelor s degree programs realized multi-media projects. A collaboration of the Visual Communication department with the theme of SDGs (*Sustainable Development Goals). The theme named "For a good cause, make the SDGS a reality" aims to develop a cause close to the heart of the different student groups. Each project is composed of at least two different supports, one primary and one secondary. The projects could therefore take any form the students deemed relevant, be it a website, editions and posters, a video sequence, or even virtual reality. The SDGs are to be achieved worldwide and by all UN member states by 2030. This means that all states must play an equal role in finding common solutions to the world s pressing challenges. Switzerland is also required to implement the objectives at national level. In addition, incentives must be created to encourage non-governmental players to make an increasingly active contribution to sustainable development. The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with their 169 targets, form the core of the Agenda 2030. They reconcile the economic, social and ecological dimensions of sustainable development and, for the first time, place the fight against poverty and sustainable development on the same agenda.Sex on the Lake Edition & video Sex On The Lake is a playful, popular science book. In the form of an illustrated story, the book presents all the players involved in the feminization of fish and explains their respective responsibilities. This serious phenomenon is not yet widely publicized. Our case study, the disappearance of river trout from Lake Leman, deals with the subject in a precise way, to reach a wider audience. Today s wastewater treatment plants do not filter chemical waste. This waste, these micropollutants, ends up in the water, threatening the biodiversity of aquatic environments. A short video to poetically raise awareness of the feminization of fish. In contrast to the book, the impact of the various players is dealt with in flashback. The video takes the point of view of the fish, so that the viewer is touched by the problem. The colors, formal aspects and titling are consistent with the book. By , & Pour mieux vivre ensemble Edition & video/teaser Pour mieux vivre ensemble is a project aimed at promoting sustainable neighborhoods. The aim of this edition is to summarize and popularize the concept of eco-neighborhoods, based on concrete examples of structures already established in Switzerland. Its main objective is to promote the emergence, realization and understanding of these living spaces which, in response to the current global crisis, seem to represent a most interesting solution. By Laeticia Jakob , Julien Caulet , Ilaria Citti ile verte Edition & website New housing is being built all the time to meet growing demand. However, the Ile verte project questions the place of plants in urban environments. Its aim is to raise public awareness of the many benefits it brings to the environment around our homes. With sustainability and ecology in mind, we looked at ways of revitalizing existing areas. In a carefully crafted edition, combining individual testimonials, informative texts and photographic images, we present the project from an entertaining angle. In this way, we give readers the opportunity to construct their own images, thanks to a subtle play on transparency. As for our website, which serves as a second medium, it reveals the major themes addressed in our edition. By Tony Altermatt , Jeanne Weber , Romain OederlinOutburst Fanzine & Website Despite recent waves of feminism, ordinary sexism is still trivialized and invisible in privileged circles. It was against this backdrop that OUTBURST n°1 was born, the first in a series of leaflets designed to provide information on discrimination against women in the workplace. In the form of a malleable, playful brochure, this project allows for rapid distribution, while being easily reproducible, in order to make information accessible to the new generation. The brochure is designed to offer several levels of reading, including testimonials, articles and real-life situations, to better grasp the issues at stake in this crucial subject. As a second support, an interactive web experience offers an overview of the brochure s content, enabling direct promotion of the project via an online medium. By ,  & VIF Website & Instagram It s not uncommon for students to put aside sports or other physical activities in favor of their studies. Unfortunately, this trend has a negative impact on their physical and mental well-being, leading to a loss of motivation. This is where the VIF platform comes into its own. Its aim is to inform the residents of Lausanne about the different places offering a variety of physical activities adapted to each individual. Whether you prefer to practice a sport alone, in a duo, find a team or even join a club for the more determined, VIF guides you towards the best options. What s more, in order to fully convince you, VIF makes it its duty to find the most affordable offers for even the tightest budgets. If you hold a HES student card or are a 3rd year gymnasium student in Switzerland, or if you belong to the HES-UNIL-EPFL community, the CHUV, the SIFO, the CIO, or the BCV, this platform is specially designed for you. By , , Petit manifeste de l information Book, Video & poster Recent events remind us of the importance of having access to reliable, verified, quality infomartion. Censorship, conspiracy theories and the issues raised by new platforms are all challenges for today s journalists. Through this project, we aim to raise awareness of journalistic professions and their importance in our societies. By synthesizing UNESCO s "Manual for Journalism Education and Training", we are making it accessible in a small pocket book for the general public. The project is visually guided by a bubble, a metaphor for the magnifying glass and investigation. The bubble makes the guide fun, gives it a sense of identity and creates a link between digital and printed media. By ,  & The Legal Clock Journal & teaser The project aims to address the harmful consequences of a lack of free and informed access to sexual, reproductive and family health. We focus here on the obstacles encountered during the abortion process. In some cases, these lead to the use of unsafe methods of termination, which can have serious consequences for both physical and mental health, including death. In "The Legal Clock", we take stock of the different situations in Europe from a geographical point of view, and present the different abortion methods available. With the aim of informing and demystifying the way procedures are carried out, we also present testimonials from people who have had a safe, clandestine abortion, and from those who have not been able to access an abortion. By , & NEO Website & posters The project, in the form of a website, retraces the path of pesticides, whose presence spreads throughout the pollination process. From its first use on plants, to its consumption in the form of honey, the journey takes visual form in a series of photos, somewhere between docu-fiction and archive. It is accompanied by a narrative text, facts and the consequences for the environment and living beings at each stage. By , & ≥92 Edition & video The edition uses contextual elements such as statistics, articles and other documents to provide a context for nuclear energy consumption and its implications and risks. Following this, a final section presents elements of semiotics related to the management of nuclear waste. In this way, the reader acquires the necessary tools to understand the consequences of nuclear consumption. The video serves as a teaser for the edition, taking certain elements and codes present in the book and representing them in a dystopian future, in order to materialize this temporal distance that may seem abstract. By ,  & CORAL VIRUS Edition & instagram BLUE is a quarterly magazine that aims to raise readers awareness of the threats facing aquatic ecosystems, oceans, rivers and their inhabitants. It is aimed at people who are sensitive to environmental issues, eager to discover and learn about contemporary problems and solutions linked to water preservation. The very first issue of this publication, entitled "Coral Virus", looks at the phenomenon of coral bleaching and the slow disappearance of corals worldwide. The magazine s mission is to inform readers about the causes and consequences of this phenomenon, while presenting current solutions. In addition to raising awareness of our individual responsibilities, this issue aims to challenge and re-evaluate our perception of corals and their preservation. It also features interviews with enthusiasts of the subject, as well as with a renowned researcher from the University of Lausanne. BLUE magazine has an Instagram account, under the name blue.magazine.ch, which aims to be an interactive, dynamic and proactive space in its publications. We regularly share news about the aquatic world and relay the work of organizations committed to protecting water resources. By Arthur Lucchesi , Eloïse Genoud , Yan Miranda

Wonderbread Project
Wonderbread

Wonderbread Within the Wonderbread workshop led by Francesca Sarti, food designer and founder of Arabeschi di Latte, BA Industrial Design students explored history, traditions, rituals, and recipes related to bread, in order to imagine new unique signature bread. Bread tells our story, the leavening cycle of our life. Bread is certainly not a novelty about humanity, but it is the basic and primary testimony of the relationship that humankind has with the earth and with what he eats (through the agricultural evolution). The first form of bread dates back to prehistoric times, it was a flat cracker made with cattail rhizome. A 2000-year-old loaf of bread, black as lava, was found in Pompeii ruins. White or black, holy or devil, leavened and unleavened, flat or puff, fresh or dry….Each bread is a unique story. This involves either the way it is prepared, shaped, colored, made from unexpected ingredients, transformed or recycled, filled or combined with other raw materials. During the workshop, original dishes with bread as a central element were developed and finally served and shared at a common meal. We would like to thank Le pain des frouzes  and Jonathan Vallin aka Baolin, Chef Antonio de Luca and the Eldora team.

CIN CIN ! Within a one-week workshop with Designer Chris Kabel, BA Industrial Design students were asked to develop a glass for a drink of their choice, whether it was for a cocktail, a fresh beer, a classy Negroni, or simply a glass for water to quench their thirst. The final designs reflect the characteristics of the drink or emphasize how the drink is prepared, served, and drunk. All glasses were blown in the ECAL courtyard with the support of the artisans of Swiss glass manufacturer Niesenglass.

FEED FILLER An in-situ installation where the art market economy becomes the backdrop for works freshly created by Bachelor Fine Arts graduates. A project proposed by Miriam Laura Leonardi. The enlarged manual of a modern art gallery serves as a backdrop for videos, works on paper and sculptural contributions by seven emerging and established artists. While their works are united by the way they step away from reality to conceptualize the illusory worlds that are foreign to us, the gallery-goers "du jour" wear tracksuits that convey a comforting message to the overwhelming crowd of visitors in search of meaning. Graduates: Charly Mirambeau, Gina Proenza, Christian Schulz, Virginie Sistek, Romane de Watteville, Maria Esteves, Kelly Tissot. ARTGENÈVE/MUSIQUE: THE TUNING CEREMONY In the heart of the Music Chamber, a curated space that gathers artworks and sound performances, Bachelor Fine Arts students in collaboration with the Ensemble Contrechamps present an exhibition driven by sound, the pieces positioned around a "tuning ceremony". This game of call and response between the works and the direct, recorded, electronic or analogical sound, extends the exhibition towards a polyphonic quest that unfolds at different moments of the day. Students: Anna Cocimarov, Caroline Bischoff, Camille Dudan, Axel Mattart, Emma Blanc-Germser, Julie Wuhrmann, Romain Rochat, Achille Meier, Tom Grbic, Marsaili Venus Haas.

Opening : Thursday, January 19 at 6:30 pm. This project developed by students in Foundation Year - Photography at ECAL, under the direction of photographer Nicolas Haeni, invites us to question the symbolism of water. Based on the quote by astrophysicist Hubert Reeves "AT THE COSMIC SCALE, LIQUID WATER IS RARER THAN GOLD", the young photographers propose their personal and individual vision, exploring different fields of photography: still life, portrait, architecture or staging. Automated Photography - Fall 2022 - MAP2 Project
Automated Photography - Fall 2022 - MAP2

Automated Photography - Fall 2022 - MAP2 The course focuses on the relationship between photography and play, and rethinks the role of the photographer as player. Students learned about notions of gamification of the image as well as image play as a form of artistic intervention, questioning systems of value creation and image economies. During the semester, students looked at contemporary and more historical artworks, as well as vernacular positions, engaging with the way artists and photographers submit or subvert rules, conform to or rebel against image systems, and ultimately ‘win or ‘lose the game. The course also introduced practical tools, learning the foundations of creative programming and how to (mis)use software and automated imaging systems.

Documentary film workshop with Guillaume Brac Project
Documentary film workshop with Guillaume Brac

Documentary film workshop with Guillaume Brac The 2022 documentary workshop was lead by Guillaume Brac. In partnership with the Lausanne Sport! ECAL film department proposed that I accompany ten second-year students on a documentary mandate financed by Lausanne Sport, the city s historic soccer club. Although I am interested in this sport, I was very clear from the start: it was not a question of making a film about soccer or the functioning of the club, but a film in which soccer would be the starting point, the spark, allowing me to go on to much more personal, intimate, singular elements. I insisted on the liberating power of the commission, at least when it is accompanied by a real freedom, which was the case here. I encouraged each student to find, if necessary to invent, the form, the device, the staging, that best corresponded to his or her sensitivity and subject. Documentary films offer to curious and adventurous filmmakers infinitely more possibilities in terms of film writing than fiction. And I believe that the films of this workshop, of an extreme diversity of forms, tones, and motifs, are a brilliant demonstration of this. ENCOURAGEMENT PRIZE OF THE CITY OF RENENS 2022

ENCOURAGEMENT PRIZE OF THE CITY OF RENENS 2022 For the 10th consecutive year, the City of Renens awards the Encouragement Prize to ECAL students. Lea Sblandano, student in Bachelor Photography, and Luis Rodriguez, student in Master Product Design, received the 2022 award for the quality of their work. Abloom explores the reproduction of artificially generated organisms. As nature constantly evolves and mutates, the speculation of new species through 3D softwares helps to envision a future where critically endangered plants thrive in virtual space as they slowly disappear from the environment. By exploring principles inherent in nature such as cloning or crossbreeding, we can t help but wonder where the fine line between preservation and control sits in order to determine our own influence over the spaces we inhabit. STUDENTS, COLLABORATIONVille de Renens , Ferme des Tilleuls
