SYMPOSIUM MASTER ARTS VISUELS

SYMPOSIUM MASTER ARTS VISUELS,26.03.2025,IKEA Auditorium, ECAL On March 26, 2025, the Master of Visual Arts proposes the symposium Worldbuilding in an era of extreme fragmentation This one-day conference is an interdisciplinary event taking as its starting point the fragmentation thesis, based on the observation that our political conversations online – in forums, social media platforms, or discussion sites – are secluded into ideologically uniform groups. This tendency towards homophily is nothing new yet it has dramatically taken speed recently, to the point that it can be seen as a planetary condition of our times. The infrastructural changes in our digital networks – privatization, tracking, and algorithmic rationality – are not the sole explanatory factors. Finance capitalism, genocidal conflicts, climate crisis, as well as ambient anxiety all trigger responses that tend to favor withdrawal strategies. Rencontres 7e Art Lausanne,15.03.2025,Capitole, Lausanne On the occasion of the 8th Rencontres 7e Art Lausanne, ECAL is taking part in a meeting with Luc Dardenne, followed by a screening of his film L Enfant, winner of the Palme d or at the Cannes Film Festival in 2005. Meet Luc Dardenne before the screening of L Enfant, moderated by Frédéric Maire, Director of the Cinémathèque suisse and Paolo Moretti, Head of ECAL Cinema Department. In a small industrial town in crisis, somewhere in Belgium, Bruno and Sonia, both under 40, love each other and survive from day to day, on her welfare and his petty theft. But Sonia is about to give birth, and is worried about the baby on the way. When she shows him little Jimmy on his way out of the maternity ward, Bruno barely gives her a glance. Shortly afterwards, a woman with whom he does business suggests a convenient way to earn the money he s always after: childless couples would be willing to give a lot for a baby like his....DATES & SCHEDULESaturday, March 15 2:30pmVENUECapitole - Cinémathèque suisse Av. du Théâtre 6, 1005 LausanneTICKET & INFOrencontres7art.ch

Fine Art Photography Vulgar First, it is photography that would be considered vulgar: due to its technical mediation (the infamous photographic click-clack), its commercial uses (press, advertising, and fashion), its dissemination, and its reproduction, photographic activity is tainted with vulgarity. A minor art, an art that does nothing more than imitate art?

DISRUPTIONS EARLY VIDEO ART IN EUROPE

DISRUPTIONS EARLY VIDEO ART IN EUROPE,20.02–23.04.2025,FMAC, Geneva A collaboration with the research project Emergence of Video Art in Europe led by François Bovier, the exhibition Disruptions. Early video Art in Europe focuses on the first steps of video art in Switzerland and its connections with European art movements of the 1970s. In two successive chapters, the exhibition shows how this medium transformed the visual arts of the time. Video became a tool of experimentation and innovation, used to create performances, reflect on questions of identity, criticize television and design art installations. Disruptions presents a diversity of practices, then shows the evolution of video art through the manipulation of the audio-visual signal to produce new images. Works from the FMAC s video collection are exhibited alongside European creations, offering a rich dialogue between similarities, differences, influences or simple coincidences.DATES & SCHEDULEChapter 1 (1969-1974) 20.02-19.03 Chapter 2 (1975-1979) 27.03-23.04 Wednesdays and Sundays 12 am to 6 pm (Closed on 20.04)ADDRESSFMAC Écoquartier Jonction Chemin du 23 Août 5, 1205 GenèveOPENINGChapter 1 (1969-1974) Thursday 20.02, 6pm Chapter 2 (1975-1979) Thursday 27.03, 6pmWEBSITEfmac-geneve.ch

Since 2018, the Art Foundation Pax has been presenting the Pax Art Awards in collaboration with HEK (House of electronic Arts Basel). Starting in 2024, two additional Talent Awards will be introduced for emerging artists from Swiss art schools whose works employ media technologies or reflect on the impact of technology on society and individuals. The project ESC by Emma Grosu, a recent Bachelor Media & Interaction Design graduate and winner of the Talent Award from the Pax Art Awards, will be presented at the HEK from September 19th to September 22nd. ESC Diploma project by , Bachelor Media & Interaction Design Video games allow players to escape into narrative worlds where they hold ‘all the power. In ESC, the game s character seeks to escape his own reality. This reversal examines the notions of freedom and constraint in video games, ironically highlighting the limits of our existence. What would happen if a character became aware of their situation, realizing that they are not in control of their movements but are, instead, imprisoned by them? ESC allowed me to explore concepts of immersion such as breaking the fourth wall and mise en abyme. Inspired by works like ‘The Truman Show and ‘Sword Art Online, I illustrated how the perception of freedom can be an illusion, both in video games and in the physical world

Solo exhibition by Lorenza Longhi at Swiss Institute Contemporary Art New York

Solo exhibition by Lorenza Longhi at Swiss Institute Contemporary Art New York Swiss Institute presents World of Yum Yum, the first solo exhibition in the US by artist Lorenza Longhi, featuring newly commissioned paintings and sculptures in a site-specific installation. Graduated with an ECAL Master Fine Arts in 2018, Lorenza Longhi currently lives and works in Zurich. Recent solo shows include Kunsthalle Zürich; Ordet, Milan; Weiss Falk, Basel; Fanta-MLN, Milan; and Plymouth Rock, Zürich. Her works have been included in group exhibitions at Kolnischer Kunstverein; Halle Fur Kunst Steiermark, Graz; Bonner Kunstverein; Macro, Rome; Fondazione Prada, Venice; Kunsthalle Zürich; Quadriennale di Roma; Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, Turin. In Milan, she was a co-founder of Armada (2014-2018). In 2020 she received the Shizuko Yoshikawa Advanced Award for Young Women Artists and the Swiss Emerging Artist Prize 2020 by Societe Generale. In 2021, she was Artist in Residence at Swiss Institute. In 2022, she was among the winners of the International Sculpture Prize by Fondazione Henraux. She is guest professor at ZhDK. Swiss Institute in New York presents World of Yum Yum, her first solo exhibition in the US. Through architectural interventions and a visual language that enlists both strategies of luxury advertising, merchandising and commerce, along with craft and DIY techniques, Lorenza Longhi s work considers spaces of display and the desires they engender. Taking its inspiration from a temporary exhibition space that the artist encountered in an airport, World of Yum Yum features a series of hyperreal closeups of artificial hand-made flowers, reminiscent of Chanel brooches, with a spy camera in the center. The artist used the spy camera s microphone to record atmospheric sounds of music as she strolled through department stores in Zürich and New York. A sound mix that, by the way, gives the impression of shopping... MASTER FINE ARTS SYMPOSIUM

MASTER FINE ARTS SYMPOSIUM,27–28.03.2023,IKEA Auditorium, ECAL On March 27 and 28, ECAL Master Fine Arts presents a 2-days symposium: The Raving Age. Histories and figures of youth. The symposium is organized as part of the research project The Raving Age. Histories and Figures of Youth, that questions what has come of youth – a conceptual, aesthetic, and political figure that was born with modernity – in the visual arts, popular culture, and the humanities. Conversely, the project addresses what the problematic category of “youth” has brought about in contemporary art and thought and seeks to grasp it as an allegory that will help rethink the “contemporary” through its most lively milieu. These two study days will explore the manifold dimensions of the concept of “youth” as strategic sites to engage with the politics of time and the aesthetic categories of our age. Partnerships with Mec-Art Project
Partnerships with Mec-Art

Partnerships with Mec-Art Within the framework of the partnership between ECAL/University of Art & Design Lausanne and Mec-Art (Pour la Mécanique d Art), the students of the Master in Design for Luxury & Craftsmanship had the opportunity to visit the manufactures and meet the artisans based in the town of Sainte-Croix. This region of the Franco-Swiss Jura arc gathers a great deal of know-how in watchmaking and art mechanics and is now part of UNESCO s Intangible Cultural Heritage. These visits and encounters should enable the students of the ECAL program to create simple and fun mechanical parts that will illustrate the various skills specific to the region, such as automatons, music boxes or watchmaking. Wind Shangwei Zhou, Somchai Thumthatanuk The mechanical components contrast with the natural and organic aesthetic of this clock, inspired by the iconic landscapes of Switzerland. Realized by the best craftsmen based in the small village of Sainte-Croix, this unique piece illustrates a perfect harmony between three typical Swiss mechanical arts: watches, automatons and music boxes. After every full turn of the minute hand, a music starts to ring and the blue metal pieces wave slowly, as the wind over the surface of the Leman lake. Colours, illusions and concept of time Sarah Yao Based on a gradient optical illusion by Akiyoshi Kitaoka, our eyes perceive colours differently depending on the shade of the background they are placed against. I wanted to visualise the passage of time through colour - the resulting objects are a translation of this animated effect through the use of simple but elegant mechanics.

Downolaod flyer with descriptions of the projects For a number of years, the MAS in Design for Luxury & Craftsmanship programme at ECAL has enabled its students to work in close collaboration with prestigious maisons to further their design education in numerous areas of excellence. The university s partnership with Association Mec-Art is fully in line with this approach, creating the opportunity for students to collaborate with artisans based in Sainte-Croix, the town in the French Swiss Jura which is home to all the know-how involved in the creation of art mechanics. Here, artisans perpetuate their time-honoured expertise in the mechanical arts, including music boxes and automatons—traditions recently added to UNESCO s List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This ambitious project has brought together international students and world-renowned artisans in order to combine design, innovation and engineering. “Mechanical Marvels” features five interactive installations that mix visual and sound effects and enables visitors to operate the mechanical masterpieces by winding a crank, thereby bringing the various automatons to life. Launch of AIZI – a unique database of Chinese characters Event
Launch of AIZI – a unique database of Chinese characters

Launch of AIZI – a unique database of Chinese characters,08.12.2021,www.aizi.ch Developed by a team composed of both designers (ECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne) and engineers (EPFL – The Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne), the AIZI research project offers a unique database of Chinese characters – consisted of 93,876 entries – in order to help type designers draw Chinese typefaces: www.aizi.ch www.aizi.ch Despite being used by some 900 million native speakers, the Chinese writing system currently relies on a small number of digital typefaces, in print or on screen. This is partly due to the quantity of characters. There is no official figure, but some dictionaries reach up to 106,230 glyphs, with the Unicode standard featuring “only” 20,902 glyphs. A Chinese scholar knows over 13,000 and being able to read a mere quarter of this figure is nothing to be ashamed of in contemporary China. For a designer, creating a Chinese typeface can easily take more than a year and represents a far greater investment, both in time and money, than a Latin (or Greek, or Cyrillic) one. These practical difficulties also limit foreigners interest in Chinese type design, as the task seems insurmountable. Could Artificial Intelligence (AI) help Chinese type design overcome its current limitations? Is it possible to teach a Machine Learning programme about the rules of Chinese composition and design in order to enable it to create the thousands of glyphs required for a typeface? “The initial idea behind the AIZI research project was to define a reduced set of basic “seed” characters that could be used as training data for an AI system, with the ultimate goals of democratising the design of Chinese typefaces and access to script for beginners and foreigners and to expand the stylistic range for a writing system that is largely dominated by traditional brush-based calligraphic shapes. Eventually, this could lead to greater quality in the production of fonts for Chinese script”, explains Shuhui Shi, who launched the project as part of the ECAL Master Type Design. Rooted in traditional structures, the system that has been developed analyses and rationalises the construction of glyphs and has resulted in a database – available in open access on www.aizi.ch – that could be used to train AIZI algorithms as well as any other future AI tools. The database contains 93,876 entries and is geared towards type designers, providing them with the reference needed to draw a set of Hanzi, even if they do not speak or read Chinese. AIZI was developed by a team composed of both designers (ECAL) and engineers (EPFL). As part of the ECAL Master Type Design programme, Shuhui Shi, initiator of the project, was in charge of the design part in collaboration with Kai Bernau, under the supervision of Matthieu Cortat. The Machine Learning process and algorithms were developed by Wei Wang, under the supervision of Mathieu Salzmann from the EPFL Computer Vision Laboratory. ECAL Master Fine Arts Symposium Event

ECAL Master Fine Arts Symposium,23.03.2021,Online, Zoom ECAL Master Fine Arts Symposium: "Frantz Fanon s Critical Legacy : From the Alienation of the Individual to the Emancipation of Practices" Psychiatrist, essayist, theorist, and Algerian independence activist, Frantz Fanon (born in Fort-de-France in 1925, died in Bethesda in 1961) is a major figure of anti-colonial theory. From the decolonisation of the self, developed in "Black Skin, White Masks", to the use of violence in "The Wretched of The Earth", he fought against the conditions of a subaltern existence to go beyond race and colonial systems. The symposium seeks to open a conversational space, taking up Fanon s attitude of refusal to consider contemporary art practices, structures, and theories. In an effort to question the structures of contemporary society and the artistic field, lecturers share tools to become “conscious of [our] unconscious”, asking if the consciousness of structures instigates a renewal of thoughts and forms. The three conversation sessions are oriented around theories (counter-narratives), practices (regarding artists production), and means of action (by creating spaces, time and methodologies). 10:15am Introduction Stéphanie Moisdon, Head of Master Fine Arts 10:30am – 12pm Counter-narratives • Slavs and Tatars, artists collective 1:30pm – 3:30pm The Politics of Images • Noémi Michel, senior lecturer and researcher in Political Theory, UNIGE • Deborah Joyce Holman, artist and curator, founder of the art space 1.1, associate director at Auto Italia 4pm – 6pm Reparation and Means of Action • Kader Attia, artist and founder of La Colonie • Françoise Vergès, political scientist and feminist activist, founder of the association “Décoloniser les arts”. The Emergence of Video Art in Europe (1960–1980): history, theory, sources and archives. Project
The Emergence of Video Art in Europe (1960–1980): history, theory, sources and archives.

The Emergence of Video Art in Europe (1960–1980): history, theory, sources and archives. To date, there is no European-wide history of video art. It is this gap that the present research programme proposes to fill. Firstly by gathering data on the artists, the works and the events that enabled the emergence of this new artistic practice in the 1960s, or that were important in its development in the following years in Europe, and by bringing to light specific national conditions of production and distribution. This programme is based on an initial mapping of video art on a European scale undertaken between 2016 and 2020 thanks to the organisation of research seminars at the Bibliothèque nationale de France (BnF), the Institut d histoire de l art in Paris (INHA) and ECAL in partnership with the Université Paris 8. This first research programme was jointly funded by the Arts H2-H laboratory of excellence and then ESTHC, with ECAL and the BnF as partners. This indexing should be continued in many other regions with the aim of transnational rewriting. The objective of the research project is twofold. On the one hand, it aims to re-evaluate continental production, to take the measure of its richness and variety, and to identify a European identity – mixed, plural, open, but nevertheless forming a cultural whole – in the practice of video art. On the other hand, the aim is to rewrite the history of this medium on an international scale, counterbalancing the America-centric character of the specialised literature on the subject in order to draw other topographies, which also include Japan or South America, with Europe constituting a node within a wider network. In order to carry out this project to renew the approach to video art, both historiographically and theoretically, we are relying on the network of some fifty national and international specialists, researchers, archive holders, artists, and witnesses that the previous programme enabled us to establish. By questioning the medium of video, the aim is also to contribute to the creation of an archaeology of new media in Europe through a series of publications and an exhibition. From Video Art to New Media: The Case of the Locarno VideoArt Festival (1980-2001) Project
From Video Art to New Media: The Case of the Locarno VideoArt Festival (1980-2001)

From Video Art to New Media: The Case of the Locarno VideoArt Festival (1980-2001) This research project looks into the shift from video art to new media, taking a major but little-studied event, the Locarno VideoArt Festival (1980-2001), as a case study: a pioneering space for broadcasting video art in Europe and a place for exploring electronic art which took place every year from 1980 to 2001 on Monte Verità. The analysis of the festival s archives and the creation of an exhibition of the works presented there highlight its pioneering role for those who wish to explore the history of information and communications theory. This research project seeks to refresh our understanding of video art and serves a dual purpose: as a piece of curatorial research to test the hypothesis that video art is characterised by its interactive quality, and a systematic enquiry into the nature and function of video art and new media. The research work spreading out over a three-year period combines tools developed in information and communications science with contributions from the history of video and electronic art, as well as contemporary art theory, curatorial studies, aesthetics and critical theory. As a result the project re-evaluates the place of Switzerland and Europe in the international video art network. Additionally, the previously unpublished festival s archives, the audio-visual documentation of the seminars and our recorded interviews with the festival s major artists are published on the project s dedicated website. The curatorial project, which takes place at the Elisarion in Minusio, is centred around the idea of a virtualisation of video art through computer-generated images and the internet. The core ideas behind the research are thus combined with the exhibition medium in order to assess their coherence.Main applicantECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne (project leader)Research teamDr Adeena Mey (researcher) Maud Pollien (researcher) Cédric Fluckiger (assistant)Visiting lecturersLorenzo Bianda Marco Maria Gazzano Guest artists Lorenzo Bianda Robert Cahen Francesco Mariotti Francisco MeirinoPartnersClaudio Berger, Centro culturale e museo Elisarion, Minusio Elio Schenini, MASI – Museo d arte della Svizzera italiana, Lugano Nicole Schweizer, Musée cantonal des beaux-arts, Lausanne Samuel Gross, Istituto Svizzero, Rome Marco Maria Gazzano, Università Roma Tre, Rome Grégoire Quenault, Alain Carou, Labex project, Université Paris 8 and the French National Library, Emergence of video art in EuropePeriodOctober 2017 – September 2020Supported byECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne SNSF – Swiss National Science Foundation Centro culturale e museo Elisarion, MinusioDisseminationPublication Francois Bovier and Adeena Mey (eds.), VideoArt Festival Locarno: a Prospective, Lausanne: ECAL / Minusio: Centro culturale e museo Elisarion, 2019.
