Jan Tschichold’s The New Typography: Its Roots and Impact on National Scenes Event
Jan Tschichold’s The New Typography: Its Roots and Impact on National Scenes

Jan Tschichold s The New Typography: Its Roots and Impact on National Scenes,26.04.2023,IKEA Auditorium, ECAL On Wednesday, April 26, 2023, ECAL welcomes scholars from the fields of art and design history and print culture for an international conference aiming to provide a better understanding of the cultural context of Jan Tschichold s book and the typographic movement that emerged from it. Jan Tschichold s essay Die neue Typographie (The New Typography, 1928) is a game-changing book, acclaimed as the curtain raiser of modern graphic design. While it takes the form of a critical essay and an operative manual, its sources have been understudied because of their difficult identification. Yet, The New Typography is simultaneously a victim of its own success and it has to deal with the consequences associated with canonisation. Having reached an almost mythical status, The New Typography is often taken for granted and rarely questioned or closely scrutinized. This paradox was the starting point of the research project “The Sources of Jan Tschichold s The New Typography”. Conducted at ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne (HES-SO) and supported by the Strategic fund of HES-SO, the project reconstructed, collected and contextualized the body of bibliographical sources included in The New Typography. This international conference invites scholars in the field of art and design history and print culture to present their research. The conference aims to provide a better understanding of the larger cultural context of Tschichold s book and the typographic movement that stemmed from it. The results of the project will be presented at the conference along with keynote lectures by Dr Paul Stirton, Professor emeritus at Bard Graduate Center, New York, Dr Christopher Burke, Principal Research Fellow at University of Reading, and Dr Julia Meer, Curator of the poster and graphics collection, Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg. ECAL × OFFECCT AT 3 days of design,18–20.06.2025,Copenhagen ECAL is taking part in the 2025 edition of 3daysofdesign in Copenhagen with the project Sound & Vision, created in collaboration with Swedish brand Offecct. As the modern workspace and living environment trend towards open-plan designs, the need for versatile acoustic solutions have regained momentum. Offecct has teamed up with students part of Master Product Design from ECAL, led by course tutor Camille Blin, to reinterpret the acoustic room divider, an essential tool in structuring both our spaces and our ideas. Acoustics have been a steady part of Offecct s portfolio since the early 2000s, and it is time for this category to question its own versatility and its influence on the well-being of our workplaces. These projects do more than divide space: they reinterpret familiar gestures, reveal the poetry of modest materials, and offer sensitive responses to the needs of the contemporary office. Together, they form a landscape of objects that are both technical and adaptable, where every separation becomes an opportunity for expression, comfort, and reinvention of the workplace.VENUEPapirøen 21 1436 CopenhagenDATES & SCHEDULEFrom 18 to 20 June 2025HEAD OF PROGRAMMEWEBSITE3daysofdesign.dkSTUDENTS, , , , , , , ASSISTANTOPENING18 June at 4pmPARTNERSFLOKK DESIGN Marianne Sælid, Vice President, Design Managment Oscar Shu Hao Kwong, Designer, Design Managment Special Thanks To: Christian Lodgaard OFFECCT Magdalena Borowiec, Brand Manager Øystein Austad, Design Manager offecct.flokk.com

Service Design - 2025 Project
Service Design - 2025

Service Design - 2025 During the Service Design course, the 3rd year of the Graphic Design, Photography and Media & Interaction Design bachelors had to create multi-media projects. A collaboration of the Visual Communication department which had as subject the SDGs (*Sustainable Development Goals). The theme was called "For a good cause, make the SDGs a reality" and its objective was to allow students to develop a cause that is close to their hearts. Each project consists of at least two different media, one primary and one secondary. These projects could take any form that the students deemed relevant, be it a website, editions, posters, a video sequence or virtual reality. The SDGs are meant to be achieved globally by all United Nations member states by 2030. This entails all states equally playing their part in seeking common solutions to the world s urgent challenges. Switzerland is also obligated to implement these goals at the national level. Furthermore, incentives must be created to encourage non-governmental actors to increasingly contribute to sustainable development. The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), along with their 169 targets, constitute the core of the Agenda 2030. They integrate the economic, social, and environmental dimensions of sustainable development and, for the first time, place poverty eradication and sustainable development on the same agenda. 2030 IS NOT FAR AWAY Edition Our docu-fiction takes the form of a black box. As major institutions and the UN admit their failure to achieve the SDGs, it records government activities in the year 2030 through the lens of global energy degradation. Amidst reports and official documents, Ravi Mehta, an energy researcher commissioned by the UN, infiltrates the system logs and reveals what is truly happening behind the scenes of a world on the brink. He exposes the deceptive efforts of states and paints a portrait of a polarized world, where the pursuit of profit makes sustainable development impossible. In 2030, he travels the globe, closely following several projects that promise sustainable energy alternatives. However, government pressure hinders him and his colleagues from properly implementing the program. As the story unfolds, the reader witnesses the worsening situation and becomes aware of the deep interconnection between the SDGs—until the end of the year, when humanity is ultimately condemned by its past inaction. By , & Lasting parcel Edition & Website The project takes the form of a newsletter, delivered like a package in a mailbox. Inside the box, beneath its packaging, the recipient finds an informative edition focused on a specific SDG, featuring text sourced from the official SDG website, along with four postcards containing QR codes. When scanned, each card leads to a website offering a rich, immersive visual interpretation of the newsletter s theme. The user can navigate through various types of content—graphic boards, videos, sounds, and images—allowing for a non-linear exploration of the edition. Visitors can also access an index, presented as an interactive map, which brings together past and future newsletters of the project. Each edition can be viewed or ordered directly from the platform. There are four newsletters in total—four packages—each containing the same set of media formats. By , & SDG QUEST Video game Our video game offers an interactive experience designed to raise awareness and explain the environmental and social challenges of the SDGs to younger audiences, using a language and format that resonates with them. Players take on the role of a child transforming a grey, polluted world through their actions and interactions with local inhabitants. The goal is to inspire young people and children to take real-world action by showing them that even small gestures can have a big impact. We provide an educational and engaging game that combines entertainment with awareness, empowering the next generation to make a difference. By , & LET S ACT NOW Website An immersive mobile website designed to raise awareness and inspire action around the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Let s Act Now presents a series of mobile-first websites, each crafted as an interactive one-page experience dedicated to a specific SDG. Through striking visuals, impactful videos, and 3D animations, each page delves into the global challenges shaping our future. Visitors are immersed in a rich experience where every visual element—from thought-provoking images to animated sequences—is designed to spark curiosity, encourage reflection, and drive engagement. This project aims to make the SDGs accessible, impactful, and engaging, mobilizing a broad audience around the world s most urgent challenges. With Let s Act Now, the mission is clear: turn awareness into concrete action. By , , & Mon monde parfait Edition How do children envision the future? We interviewed 60 children aged 4 to 11, all attending school in Switzerland, to gather their visions of an ideal world. These conversations, centered around the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), allowed us to dive into their imaginations and discover their ideas for a better future. Our project invites these young minds to imagine a utopian world aligned with the SDGs, while also proposing solutions to improve today s reality. The children s ideas were then transformed into creative, colorful visuals that illustrate their unique visions of a perfect future. The publication brings together these in-depth interviews along with the illustrations. A second layer of reading is offered through augmented reality: by scanning selected pages, readers can access more alarming data on today s environmental and social challenges—creating a striking contrast with the children s imagined utopia. This project highlights the richness of children s perspectives and their potential to inspire meaningful reflection on a sustainable future. By , , & Getting Involved Edition & Posters The project consists of three editions, each focused on a specific Sustainable Development Goal (SDG). These editions combine protest slogans with visual symbols that embody their messages. They share a common core derived from the “Getting Involved” chapter of Amnesty International s Sustainable Development Goals text, which offers guidance on how to engage in the fight for the SDGs. Each edition also includes a section dedicated to its respective SDG, featuring detachable and fold-out pages that can be transformed into protest signs. These pages are based on the goals outlined in the resolution adopted by the UN General Assembly on September 25, 2015. The editions are modular, allowing pages to be interchanged across editions to vary and customize the slogans. By , &

ECAL × SDOL, Horizon Ouest, Regards sur la métamorphose urbaine

ECAL × SDOL, Horizon Ouest, Regards sur la métamorphose urbaine New transport infrastructure is emerging, while former industrial wastelands are giving way to modern buildings and redesigned outdoor spaces. Gradually, residents are moving into these new neighborhoods and adopting new habits.  To capture the first moments of life in these spaces, the association "Ouest lausannois: Prix Wakker 2011" has invited second-year students from the ECAL Bachelor of Photography program to observe them throughout 2024. This project highlights 18 ongoing construction sites or recently completed neighborhoods. Through their perspectives, the students offer original approaches to discovering, understanding, and appropriating these new spaces.  Photography maintains a unique relationship with the world around us, as it often depends on it. Far from merely documenting reality in a strict sense, it has the power to transfigure and reveal the invisible or the unspeakable. This is the approach adopted by the ECAL photography students at the request of the "Ouest lausannois: Prix Wakker 2011" association, as they explored various territories in western Lausanne. As part of this commission, each student was randomly assigned a specific location—be it a new neighborhood, a construction site, or a distinctive building—on which they worked over an academic year. Faced with spaces that were sometimes unphotogenic or even resistant to imagery, the challenge was to look beyond appearances, to resonate with these places in order to grasp their unique dynamics. The photographs question our perception of these recent landscapes and bear witness to the human activity unfolding within them. What do they reveal about our ways of living and moving? Who are the people inhabiting these spaces? What new landscapes emerge from these rapid transformations?  Through approaches that are sometimes sensitive and intimate, sometimes detached and analytical, or even driven by a formal fascination with the objects captured, the works presented reveal the density and diversity of everyday life. They bring forth a poetic vision of the city, inviting us to consider these territories not merely as functional backdrops but as fully-fledged spaces, rich with history, form, and identity—fluid and multifaceted, just like those who inhabit them.

Horizon Ouest,26.03–21.05.2025,Bussigny Observing Urban Transformation: ECAL Students Capture the New Spaces of Western Lausanne New transport infrastructures are being built, while former industrial wastelands are giving way to modern buildings and redeveloped outdoor spaces. Little by little, residents are taking over these new neighborhoods and adopting new habits. To capture the first moments of life in these spaces, the association "Ouest lausannois : Prix Wakker 2011" invited second-year students in ECAL s Bachelor of Photography program to observe them throughout 2024. The exhibition highlights 18 construction sites in progress or recently completed neighborhoods. Through their eyes, the students offer us original approaches to discovering, taming and appropriating these new spaces. At the end of the exhibition, everyone is invited to go and explore these places for themselves. Photography has a unique relationship with the world around us, because it often depends on it. Far from documenting it in the strict sense of the word, photography has the capacity to transfigure and reveal the invisible or the unspeakable. At the request of the "Ouest lausannois: Prix Wakker 2011" Association, ECAL photography students have adopted this approach, exploring various territories in the western part of Lausanne. As part of this commission, each student was allocated a specific location by lottery: a new district, a construction site or a singular building, on which he or she worked for one academic year. Faced with spaces that are sometimes unphotogenic, or even resistant to images, the challenge was to go beyond appearances, to enter into resonance with these places in order to grasp their own dynamics. The photographs on display question our perception of these recent landscapes, and bear witness to the human activity taking place there. What do they say about the way we live and move around? Who are the people who inhabit these spaces? What landscape forms are emerging from these rapid transformations? Through approaches that are at times sensitive and intimate, at times distanced and analytical, or guided by a formal fascination for the objects apprehended, the works presented reveal the density and diversity of everyday life. They give rise to a poetics of the city, inviting us to consider these territories not as mere functional backgrounds, but as spaces in their own right, bearers of histories, forms and an identity of their own - shifting and multiple, like those who inhabit them.DATES & VENUETravelling exhibition Bussigny 26.03 – 10.04 PL. Fiction film workshop with Klaudia Reynicke Project
Fiction film workshop with Klaudia Reynicke

Fiction film workshop with Klaudia Reynicke The 2024 fiction film workshop for 2nd year students was lead by swiss and peruvian director Klaudia Reynicke. Head of workshop: "The aim of the second-year BA fiction workshop 2024-2025 was to write and direct short films on a very limited budget and to a very tight deadline. As head of this workshop, I chose to push these constraints to make it a real learning tool for the students. We took our inspiration from the principles of Dogma 95, while imposing a theme: ‘birth . The idea was to get the students to concentrate fully on the essence of filmmaking, to tell stories in the most raw and sincere way possible, without relying on devices often considered indispensable. This approach allowed them to explore storytelling and directing in a new way. Most of them played along. I ended up relaxing some of the rules of Dogme 95, which may seem contradictory. But this strict framework, which wasn t very sexy for many at first, served as a starting point, giving them a basis and constraints for experimenting, testing and researching. Then the projects took over. Everyone found their own urgency, their own rules. So we left Dogme 95 behind and concentrated on the films themselves. Films that are unique, sincere, sometimes raw, often powerful and as rich as they are profound, in all their splendour." Visual Identity BA3 S1 2024-2025 Project
Visual Identity BA3 S1 2024-2025

Visual Identity BA3 S1 2024-2025 Through the prism of visual identity, this project addresses issues of graphic language and artistic direction. Each stage of the project examines an aspect of the development of a visual identity: research, concept, visual language, design and communication. RADIONModular visual identity designed for the RADION club in Amsterdam. Designed to be both recognisable and impactful, it adapts to all formats and uses in order to meet the needs of a nightclub in a highly competitive environment. HS UHT USTThis project explores a potential overhaul of the Swiss Shooting Federation s visual identity in order to place it in a more contemporary and rigorous context. By moving away from the traditional clichés associated with shooting sports, this new identity aims to reposition the federation by emphasising excellence, precision and modernity in order to appeal to a new audience. La jetée In 1962, French filmmaker Chris Marker released La Jetée. It was an experimental film made up of hundreds of 35 mm black and white shots. It tells the story of a journey through time in a distorted post-apocalyptic Paris. The visual identity is based on an original typography designed to pay homage to Marker s raw material and its French context, and transcribes the idea of sequencing and light projection. It evolves through a teaser for a screening of La Jetée and a booklet containing the entire film script. ICONOHow do you talk to images? Should exhibition images be shown or not? Collages, appropriationists, the whole world up to the present day, a constellation of images... Since the beginning of the 20th century, iconographic artists have been appropriating images produced on an industrial scale. The images of these same artists form the name of the fictitious exhibition ICONO. By re-appropriating them, identity uses their codes to communicate. ApneaNumbers are omnipresent in the world of freediving, whether measuring depth or the duration of an immersion. This visual identity is based on a variable typography with two axes, each representing one of these parameters. Duration is illustrated by the change in the fat of the counter-forms, symbolising how full the diver s lungs are. Depth is represented by the thickness of the contours, evoking the gradation of colours that darken with immersion. The animation of these variables creates a breathing effect, echoing the rhythm of apnea. Orpheum TheaterNow abandoned, the Orpheum Theater in New Bedford, USA, had its heyday at the beginning of the XXᵉ century. To illustrate its transition from 6ᵉ to 7ᵉ art, the identity of this film library traces the three major periods that marked this venue. It combines neoclassical ornamentation, as reinterpreted in the Art Deco era, with a typographic structure inspired by flyers from the golden age of theatre. The whole is geometrically

SWISS DESIGN NETWORK SYMPOSIUM Event
SWISS DESIGN NETWORK SYMPOSIUM

SWISS DESIGN NETWORK SYMPOSIUM,04–05.12.2024,ECAL, Renens Design disciplines have entered the academic world in Switzerland relatively recently. Swiss design schools have only been required to perform research since the end of the 20th century to be qualified as universities of applied arts. Yet what shape does this research take? Design has become an academic discipline producing original knowledge in traditional formats. However, the discipline has designerly ways of knowing that are yet to be fully recognised and understood. The paradigm of design research, or research through design, supplements new knowledge with the production of new designs, such as prototypes, visualisations, performances, and exhibitions. These new, non-strictly bibliographic formats are relevant for their impact on design schools and audiences. Moreover, AI technologies threaten the scientific paper format as the ultimate form of knowledge transmission. This symposium questions the status of design within the academic system and examines how knowledge is produced by design disciplines. It aims to provide examples of virtuous practices and discuss the relevance of design research as a framework in the medium and long terms. We invited practice- and theory-based contributions anchored in design disciplines and cross- or transdisciplinary approaches that present examples of research through design, discuss methodological and epistemological issues, and offer novel ways of approaching practice-based research.DATES & SCHEDULE04–05.12.2024 Free entry under registrationWEBSITEresearchday.chVENUEECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne Av. du Temple 5 1020 Renens

For the 8th year, the Fondation USM has rewarded a group of students from ECAL s Bachelor s degree in Visual Communication, whose Anthracite project aims to raise public awareness of the effects of light pollution on a sustainable future. The 8th edition of the Bouse de la Fondation USM honors the project by Rebecca Alfandary, Emma Louise Grosu and Phinn Sallin-Mason, students in ECAL s Visual Communication department. Anthracite is a reflection of the night sky, which is no longer as dark as it should be. The project focuses specifically on Swiss biodiversity, and aims to raise awareness of the significant impact of light pollution on pollination. It highlights how artificial light disturbs nocturnal insects, interfering with their natural behaviors and ultimately threatening their existence. Today, 60% of Swiss moths are threatened. The project, which combines powerful images with specific information and solutions, consists of a book, a video and an image installation specially designed for the La Becque garden, where it will be on display from September 19 to 22, 2024.VENUELa Becque | Artist Residency Chemin de La Becque 1 CH-1814 La Tour-de-PeilzDATES & SCHEDULE19.09–22.09.2024 11:00–19:00 Free entryWEBSITEfondationusm.org

Pax Art Awards,19–22.09.2024,HEK, Basel On Thursday, 19 September at 18:30, the Pax Art Awards will be presented for the seventh time at HEK (Haus der Elektronischen Künste) in Basel. Since 2018, the Art Foundation Pax has been presenting the Pax Art Awards in collaboration with HEK (House of electronic Arts Basel). Starting in 2024, two additional Talent Awards will be introduced for emerging artists from Swiss art schools whose works employ media technologies or reflect on the impact of technology on society and individuals. The project ESC by Emma Grosu, a recent Bachelor Media & Interaction Design graduate and winner of the Talent Award from the Pax Art Awards, will be presented at the HEK from September 19th to September 22nd. ESC Diploma project by , Bachelor Media & Interaction Design Video games allow players to escape into narrative worlds where they hold ‘all the power. In ESC, the game s character seeks to escape his own reality. This reversal examines the notions of freedom and constraint in video games, ironically highlighting the limits of our existence. What would happen if a character became aware of their situation, realizing that they are not in control of their movements but are, instead, imprisoned by them? ESC allowed me to explore concepts of immersion such as breaking the fourth wall and mise en abyme. Inspired by works like ‘The Truman Show and ‘Sword Art Online, I illustrated how the perception of freedom can be an illusion, both in video games and in the physical world

ECAL at Festival Images Vevey Event
ECAL at Festival Images Vevey

ECAL at Festival Images Vevey,07–29.09.2024,Vevey From September 7 to 29, graduates of ECAL s Bachelor and Master of Photography programs present their work at the Festival Images Vevey. VENUEVeveyDATES & SCHEDULEFrom September 7 to 29, 2024WEBSITEimages.chFrom September 7 to 29, 2024, photography in all its forms takes over the streets of Vevey, invades the parks and strolls along the shores of the lake. For three weeks, the Festival Images Vevey transforms the small town on the Riviera and welcomes a wide audience. This year, four ECAL graduates are part of the program. Positive Illusions Diploma project by , Master Photography graduate With this project , Benjamin Freedman is reconstructing his childhood memories using CGI (Computer Generated Imagery). The artist diverts this technology, mostly used in films and video games, which requires close involvement in the creation of every object, detail and lighting. Freedman meticulously reconstructs a family roadtrip between Montreal and Maine in the United States in 1999, reproducing his point of view at the age of nine. Created for the Boéland site near the Swiss Museum of Games, the installation explores how memory shapes, transforms and simulates reality. Positive Illusions plunges nostalgically into the joyous world of childhood, fragmented by memory and reassembled by technology. Cash Me Online Diploma project by , Master Photography graduate Cash Me Online is a satirical project combining photography, performance and social media footage. Amandine Kuhlmann creates a hyper-feminine alter ego that she embodies online and during performances to achieve viral fame. She exaggerates her poses, imitates TikTok and Instagram trends and dramatizes her everyday life to make herself noticed. The artist reappropriates videos, drawing on the suggestions of her algorithm and the female stereotypes portrayed by social networks. These caricatured images reveal the ambiguities of virtual profiles, between the objectification of the body and the desire for individuality. Questioning the impact of social media and the monetisation of the self, the installation presents a reflection to a generation obsessed with their physical and digital appearance. One Last Journey , Master Photography graduate One Last Journey addresses artificial intelligence and the instant photographic process through the telling of a fictional love story. Attempting to imitate the aesthetics of the Polaroid camera, Alexey Chernikov writes short descriptions of a couple s last journey before separation on the Midjourney image-generating software. These images are then reproduced on a traditional Polaroid camera using a new printing device developed by the same company. Interested in the emotional potential of AI, the artist questions the reliability of the photographic medium. From one image to the next, the pair appears different each time, confusing the sense of reality. Using the Polaroid as definitive proof of authenticity, the project invites us to reconsider the photographic snapshot in light of AI. Get the Look! , Bachelor Photography graduate What would happen if we let algorithms dress us? This is the question Romain Mader asked himself when he founded Get the Look! He set himself a challenge: to follow the recommendations of his smartphone s algorithm and order clothes from online stores as suggested, without making any personal choices. Since the algorithm is influenced by his and his partner s browsing activity, the result would be expected to match their style and personality. In his studio, the artist adopts a number of incongruous postures. By examining the sales techniques and marketing tools used by fast-fashion websites to encourage consumption, the series ironically denounces industryinduced addiction. Through the example of fashion, Mader universally reveals the influence of algorithms on our lives.

Disparitions Project
Disparitions

Rebecca Alfandary – Disparitions Everything is fated to disappear. This non-exhaustive collection explores the plurality of the manifestations and forms of impermanence, its impacts, its causes, as well as its different timescales. Great and little stories inhabit the same space, and make information and interpretation come together. Text and images, both linked and independent of each other, illustrate each subject and create a dialogue. Throughout the book, a series of interludes give it a more sensible dimension, by referring to our relationship with the ephemeral. The whole is both a testimony and a tribute to what is disappearing, what has disappeared, what will disappear.

LittleCubes Project
LittleCubes

Sasha Iatsenia – LittleCubes Today, 1 in 15 children are affected by a disorder that alters their behaviors, impacting their educational, socialization, and communication skills. LittleCubes were designed as therapeutic toys to help develop these skills through light and play. Using a cube that lights up and responds to natural gestures, therapists can create fun and engaging exercises using an intuitive app. While designing this project, I discovered that I have autistic traits, inspiring me to build a toy I would have loved as a child. My goal is to build bridges between neurotypical and neurodiverse experiences, making the world more inclusive for all. To date, I have tested the cube with more than 15 therapists and 30 children (ASD, motor deficiencies and associated disorders). I hope to continue this project after my diploma. This project is supported by Fondation Dr Combe.

Avants Project
Avants

Juliette Masson – Avants Synthetic fibers are now a common feature of sportswear, including in the hiking world. These are popular for their technical properties: lightness, elasticity, low absorbency, and wrinkle resistance, among others. However, the environmental impact of these materials is significant, both during manufacture and throughout their life cycle. In response to this issue, Avants propose an alternative hiking outfit made from natural materials: Linen, selected for its thermo-regulating and hypoallergenic properties; waxed cotton, known for its durability and water-repellent qualities, chosen to provide protection against rain and abrasion. The design of these outfits drew inspiration from historical garments and their fastening systems, while being adapted for contemporary and functional use.

TRIBE’S STARLINK HOOKUP RESULTS IN PORN ADDICTION!!!

Bor Cvetko – TRIBE S STARLINK HOOKUP RESULTS IN PORN ADDICTION!!! The project explores existential dread from passive digital media spectatorship. We re bombarded with distressing news, funny videos, happy moments, images of death, and posts by friends and celebrities. This endless stream causes disconnection, numbness, and exhaustion. A recurring element in my project is the white plastic chair, symbolising relaxation. These chairs now represent lost support and balance. I include archaeological elements to reflect on the decaying present and uncertain future. Pictures are mounted on metal plates, forming a grid of 24 squares. These industrial products, meant to support weight, now support assembled and torn photo transfers. The project uses the same title as a TMZ article describing the impact of the Internet on an isolated Amazonian tribe.

We All Walk On Empty Staircases

Tanguy Morvan – We All Walk On Empty Staircases We All Walk On Empty Staircases reflects the deep scars of the artist s childhood traumas. Growing up in a violent and tormented environment left permanent marks on his mind. At the age of seven, he found refuge in the game World of Warcraft, where he immersed himself for sixteen years, creating an idealized version of himself. In recent years, his grandfather introduced him to the Masonic world, which deepened his fascination with rituals. For the past six months, he has been transforming his body through tattooing, a process that has allowed him to regain control over both his mind and body while staying connected to past memories. His project invites reflection on the impact of domestic violence and the healing power of rituals.

We Won't Tell Daddy! Project
We Won't Tell Daddy!

Nina Pacherová – We Won t Tell Daddy! We Won t Tell Daddy! takes a speculative look at the impact of sharenting - the phenomenon whereby parents excessively share their children s lives on social networks. In the form of a video installation, it explores the future consequences of the digital footprint that parents create for their children. It focuses on the TikTok #bathroomchallenge, where children are recorded cursing, and unaware of the future implications, their video is shared online. The project uses AI and deepfake technology to protect children s identities by replacing their faces with that of the author and highlights the abuse of content. At the same time, it encourages us to redefine the role of technology in our lives by using deepfake as a protective tool.

Night Editor Project
Night Editor

Nell May – Night Editor Night Editor is a text font family designed for the dark screen writing environment: a focused space for creation and thinking. Night Editor features a calm low contrast calligraphic skeleton. Large counters, open apertures and generous spacing all aid legibility and counter the impact of light halation. Styles are limited to necessary tools: Regular, Bold, Italics (plus accompanying light mode grades). Night Editor Mono is the text production workhorse with oversized punctuation. It is designed for a slower, more physical access to a text in progress and is also available in Round with softened terminals that embrace the bloom of light. Night Editor Sans is the proportional counterpart, suitable for both writing and reading texts in the tranquil darkness.

So, how can we live better? Project
So, how can we live better?

So, how can we live better? Beyond questions of functionality, comfort and individual or collective well-being, the built environment is capable of responding in a stimulating way to societal, energy and environmental challenges. Workplaces, homes, public spaces, interiors and streets are all driven by real statements of intent that motivate their design. The 2nd year Graphic Design students worked on a communication based on one of these principles (or others) and on the architectural creation that refers to it in order to promote it. Ailleurs Ici Édition Ailleurs Ici is the story of 132 route de la Fruitière. During their retirement, the two former teachers René and Anne-Marie Favre explored the world. Their travels are above all encounters, the interests of enthusiasts. A history book of faraway lands for René, and a fantastic but tangible herbarium for Annie. But when they return from these expeditions, it s their house that changes. As if undergoing a second metamorphosis. The old renovated barn at 132 Route de la Fruitière has been given a final chrysalis. The walls are filled with colourful objects and prints of exotic negatives. The stones here are filled with prints from elsewhere. Without intending to, René and Annie have turned 132 Route la Fruitière into a museum inhabited by its curators. Elsewhere Here is their catalogue, retracing each of René and Annie s journeys through objects as mystical as they are foreign. Par LEs vieux Blocs Édition Les vieux blocs traces the history of a group of buildings in the Marolles district of Brussels. Emblematic of Art Nouveau architecture, it now represents a meeting point between a social building and an architectural one. This project invites us to explore this controversial dynamic by bringing together the tourist side and the social side in the same architecture, with a testimonial from a neighbour and images of tourists strolling through the district. Par Terrain Gurzelen Édition It s important, even temporarily, to create parentheses in society, bubbles of utopia that can burst at any moment. The energy that emanates from these ephemeral moments is unique. Gurz is a sensory stroll that hijacks, appropriates and translates the materiality of the Terrain de la Gurzelen, a football pitch temporarily occupied by the residents of the city of Biel. The aim is to leave a trace of the life of this surreal place, which will soon disappear. Par 14 21 Vidéo This simulation shows the duality between the inflows and the threats posed by the Grande Dixence dam to the population of the valleys below. It traces the hypothetical course of water from the dam to the town of Sierre. Par CITY STADIUM LEAGUE Édition The city stadium is a multi-purpose urban facility designed for sporting activities and an ideal meeting place for local residents, reinforcing social cohesion. CITY STADIUM LEAGUE, halfway between the famous vignette collection albums and reportage, is an immersive object retracing an amateur football tournament held on 7 and 8 May 2024 in Renens. It highlights not only the sporting event itself, but also the social and unifying impact of the event. Par Hotel à gogo Édition The aim was to pay homage to the abandoned Grand Hôtel Chaumont & Golf in Neuchâtel. Having closed, because it was recluse of any civilization, in the heights of Neuchâtel. At the time it was in operation, the hotel used to organise themed activities to attract customers, but these were unsuccessful and the hotel went bankrupt. So I based the concept of my edition on this theme, recreating melancholy costume scenes inside the hotel, as if someone had never stopped carrying out these activities in this place frozen in time. I did all this with the help of official documents I d picked up on the spot, such as activity reports and flyers promoting the evenings, the bands, the fancy dress costumes and the concerts. These are included in the edition to accompany the photographic sequence. Par

Service Design - 2024 Project
Service Design - 2024

Service Design - 2024 During the Service Design course, the 3rd year of the Graphic Design, Photography and Media & Interaction Design bachelors had to create multi-media projects. They integrate the economic, social, and environmental dimensions of sustainable development and, for the first time, place poverty eradication and sustainable development on the same agenda.Your Email s Carbon Footprint Poster & Website This project comprises a website that explores various aspects of the carbon footprint of emails and the different ways in which they contribute to CO2 emissions. To make this information more accessible, the carbon footprint figures of emails are illustrated using concrete and familiar examples for the general public, such as kilometers driven by cars or the energy consumption of household appliances. In order to raise awareness among a broad audience, we have introduced a mascot named Bob, who serves as a guide through this information. Posters summarize the three main elements of the site: the CO2 emissions from emails, solutions to reduce this footprint, and an introduction to Bob. They encourage the public to visit the website to learn more. By , & SHIEn Website & Moving Poster Our project aims to raise awareness among 18-24 year olds about the social and environmental issues of ultra fast fashion, focusing specifically on the case of the giant SHEIN. The idea is to dissect each step of the ordering process by revealing behind-the-scenes aspects through an interactive experience that incorporates social media codes. By , & back to Newspaper & Video We have created a project aimed at promoting sustainable cosmetics. This project highlights the adoption of solid cosmetics in a zero waste approach. It raises awareness and informs about an effective and simple alternative, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing sustainable solutions that are respectful of both people and the environment. By , & Anthracite Edition & video Our project aims to raise awareness among the public about the dangers of light pollution for the survival of nocturnal insects and its impact on Swiss biodiversity. The edition combines scientific popularization with photographs illustrating the impact of light, blending the poetic with the alarming. The teaser immerses the viewer in a first-person perspective, experiencing life as an insect, to demonstrate the direct effects of this invasive light and to evoke empathy among the audience. Award-winning project at the USM Design Grant competition By , & 2030CHF Magazines & instagram We have launched a magazine called 2030CHF, with an annual publication every year until 2030. This magazine examines Switzerland from a new and impartial perspective, inviting everyone to ask themselves: "Will we achieve our goals by 2030?" By , & Tue la·e consomateur·ice en toi ! Fanzine & Website We have created a fanzine and a website to inform about the capitalist logic of over-responsibilizing individuals. This project aims to provide keys to understanding the consumer condition and to encourage breaking this status by becoming agents of change, disseminating content, and taking action. By , & ECOVILLE Video game & Website The project ECOVILLE takes the form of a downloadable computer video game. Interactive and fun, it is designed to raise awareness among the younger generation about the importance of preserving urban flora and fauna. The main objective is to provide children with simple ecological solutions that they can easily implement. By sharing their newfound knowledge with their parents, children become ambassadors for environmental conservation. The game also helps to develop their autonomy and critical thinking through its various stages and challenges. By , & bits & peels Book & instagram The project consists of an educational edition in the form of a cookbook, inspired by grandmother s recipes, highlighting various foods, their types, and different ways to transform their waste. These transformation methods are categorized into several categories: cosmetics, maintenance, cooking, and gardening. The edition is accompanied by Instagram posts focused on seasonal fruits and vegetables, offering tips for effectively recycling these foods. By , &

“The Eskimo in the Mojave Desert”: Herbert Matter, a Designer Across Scenes and Genres Project
“The Eskimo in the Mojave Desert”: Herbert Matter, a Designer Across Scenes and Genres

“The Eskimo in the Mojave Desert”: Herbert Matter, a Designer Across Scenes and Genres Matter s career was that of a multidisciplinary, international designer working across commerce and culture. He was not only a graphic artist but also a photographer, type designer, art director, teacher and film-maker. His work in the field of advertising and editorial design, his collaborations with artists, his self-commissioned work, his photography and film outputs and his long-serving position as an educator provide as many entry points to analyse the impact of migration and an international network on a graphic designer s career. It also provides a case study to analyse the professional model of the designer working as photographer and layout artist simultaneously. The historiography on the Swiss graphic designer and photographer Herbert Matter (1907–1984) is characterised by a dichotomy. On the one hand, his oeuvre is partially well-known; some of his works are regarded as amongst “the most celebrated posters in design history” and have been published so widely that they make him a canonical figure of the highest degree. On the other hand, scholarship on his career is often shallow, repetitive and limited to the recurrent reproductions of a few selected artefacts. As is often the case with the canon, Matter s high visibility does not translate into a refined understanding of his work. Scholarship fails to contextualise him as a multifaceted graphic designer, photographer, and film-maker whose career did not fit within a specific style or movement, but reflected influences ranging from French poster artists, Swiss modernism and American pop culture. His profile was so unusual that the American graphic designer Paul Rand, who was active in corporate identity and branding, quipped: “I have always had the feeling that H[erbert] M[atter] on Madison Avenue was like an Eskimo in the Mohavi [sic] desert”, that is an out-of-place character in the world of New York advertising. The present project therefore provides a more nuanced discourse on Matter s career by relating his visual work to his influences and his migration between the three scenes in which he was active: Switzerland, France and the United States. It answers the following question: How did Herbert Matter s migration, transnational experiences and network shape his approach to graphic design?ApplicantsDr Jonas Berthod Prof. Gilles GavilletResearch teamDr Jonas Berthod (ECAL) Prof. Louise Paradis (Université du Québec à Montréal UQAM) Prof. Gilles Gavillet (ECAL)Period1.12.2023 – 31.1.2025Supported byHES-SO, Réseau de Compétences Design et Arts Visuels RCDAV

Fiction film workshop with Carmen Jaquier Project
Fiction film workshop with Carmen Jaquier

Fiction film workshop with Carmen Jaquier The 2023 fiction film workshop for 2nd year students was lead by swiss director Carmen Jaquier. Head of workshop: "The initial proposal was to leave room for the students desires and quests, while offering a simple framework for the making of their second-year film. We worked from a single set, as vast as Michelangelo Frammartino s and the exhausted interior architecture of John Cassavetes characters. Together, we looked for simple, accessible, everyday ways of nurturing a story and characters. We wanted to capture gestures, ways of speaking, and significant details in people we know and don t know. We came up with "A Rock", a sort of collection of images, thoughts and interactions, with the idea of expanding the universe of the films. To avoid the black holes of writing, we set ourselves in action, in movement. We imagined the shoots as parties, and danced with Aurélien. Collages and skeletons invaded the white walls of the school, revealing the films to come. On the big screen, I watch, moved, two young brothers tearing themselves apart over a lie, three friends in a frenzy just before separation, a young man absorbed by his need for power, a friend giving in under the weight of the mountain, two sisters who have made a promise to each other, a son who summons his father s spirit through music, the love and death rites of a young kendoka, a group of girlfriends in search of an inner voice, and a fragmented young man, before the end of the world." Image Creation Project
Image Creation

Image Creation In the course of the Image Creation course taught by Guy Meldem, third year students choose the subject they wish to work on. They develop their own technique and approach to image-making in preparation for their diploma project and their future professional practice. Autrement dit Between you and me, there are nineteen appointments, nineteen houses, nineteen objects and thirty-eight hands, the ones that applauded my happiness, the ones that dried my tears, the ones that began to tell me stories, with open palms, intertwined fingers and jerky gestures. Par Camille Choquardoracle des rêves Oracle des Rêves is the result of a collaboration in which a personal reinterpretation is made accessible to the public. This project rethinks the card, making it light, held delicately in the hand, to ultimately create reference figures, evoking spiritual statues, inviting to immersive places of meditation. Par Sacha DécoppetHistoire du papillon This project is a reinterpretation of citrus paper. Based on a children s story, the illustrations are inspired by the motifs and codes of this packaging. Par Rebecca Alfandaryriz de vully These rice bags and their design were conceived for rice produced in Vully, Switzerland. Silk-screen printed, the visuals relate to their place of production, and find their codes in the Asian style of rice-producing countries. Par Jonas Buxcelstubborn In 2016, Stefan Brüggemann published "Showtitles", a work-in-progress on exhibition titles that he makes freely available to use as we see fit. Using the title "Stubborn" in an attempt to exhaust it visually by recontextualizing it differently, "Têtu" becomes protean. The Manufacture of Type for Typewriters in Switzerland Project
The Manufacture of Type for Typewriters in Switzerland

The Manufacture of Type for Typewriters in Switzerland Between the 1940s and the 1990s, three companies manufactured type components for typewriters in Switzerland: Caractères SA, Setag and Novatype. During more than fifty years, they supplied the biggest manufacturers of office machines in Europe and around the world, such as IBM, Remington, Olivetti, Paillard-Hermès or Triumph-Adler. Having held a leading position worldwide, the three manufacturers played a key role in the design, development, and production of type components and typefaces for typewriters, as well as for all kinds of impact printers. By looking in details at their production methods, the research observes what influence did the manufacturing processes and the mechanical characteristics of the typewriter have on the design of the typefaces. Additionally, it takes interest into the surprising role played by the criminal police. Specialized in the dating and identification of typewriter typefaces for judicial and criminal purposes, forensic experts developed over the years specific methods and compiled rich documentations on typewriter typefaces. Being in direct contact with the type manufacturers to gain first-hand information, they even interfered in the design of some lettershapes. Based on oral history and archival research, this project aims to shed light on this little-known part of the industrial and typographic history.Main applicantSophie Wietlisbach, researcherResearch teamDavide Fornari, scientific supervisor Roland Früh, scientific supervisorPeriod01.01.2023–31.12.2024Supported byECAL / University of Art and Design, internal research grant DNP Foundation for Cultural Promotion, DNP Graphic Culture Research Grant

Anthracite Project
Anthracite

Anthracite The Anthracite project aims to raise public awareness about the dangers of light pollution, which threatens the survival of nocturnal insects and impacts biodiversity in Switzerland. Through a carefully crafted edition blending scientific outreach and photography, the project strikes a delicate balance between poetry and urgency. Anthracite also takes shape in two additional formats: a visual installation made up of striking images, and a teaser video. These mediums of awareness immerse the audience by adopting the perspective of an insect, inviting viewers to directly experience the effects of human-caused pollution. Ultimately, the project seeks to inspire greater protection for the vulnerable insects at risk.
