«ECAL Graphic Design» in Hong Kong,30.11.2016–25.03.2017,Experience Centre, Hong Kong In collaboration with the Hong Kong Design Institute (HKDI) and the Institute of Vocational Education (Lee Wai Lee), ECAL presents an exhibition of projects created by students of the Bachelor Graphic Design and the Master Art Direction. Images HD ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne has long been recognised as a world reference in terms of – amongst others – graphic design. Be it in designing books, catalogues, magazines or posters, typography or digital projects, ECAL students are able to embrace all fields of this discipline and to masterfully perform a wide variety of assignments. This success is largely based on a policy of workshops allowing them to learn from the best Swiss or international graphic designers directly on the school premises. With this in mind, ECAL has had the good fortune of welcoming in recent years leading figures such as Ludovic Balland, Bibliothèque, Mirko Borsche, Thomas Buxo, Veronica Ditting, Europa, Johann Kauth, Jürg Lehni, Ari Marcopoulos, Maximage, Young Na Kim, NORM, OK-RM, Brian Roettinger, Hansje van Halem, Cornel Windlin and Job Wouters aka Letman. The exhibition and book “ECAL Graphic Design” largely retraces projects conducted in the Bachelor Graphic Design and Master Art Direction courses over the past five years in the framework of these visits, but also of other courses which have contributed to the School s reputation. Edited by the Gavillet & Rust studio, the book revolves around a long succession of tracking shots in which projects are not classified in categories, but organised by colour. The exhibition design orchestrated by Adrien Rovero is based on the same concept, allowing a total flexibility of the exhibition. «ECAL Graphic Design» exhibition Opening on Tuesday 29 November 2016, from 6 pm to 7 pm at HKDI and IVE (LWL). "Walk with Pierre Hardy" exhibition,11–13.11.2016,Paris Photo On the occasion of Paris Photo, Pierre Hardy & the ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne present the exhibition "Walk with Pierre Hardy". Fifteen iconic models by the designer were visually reinterpreted by the students of Bachelor Photography under the direction of Philippe Jarrigeon. Additionally, a luxurious special publication marks the occasion. To be discovered from 11 to 13 November 2016 (10 am to 7 pm) at the Pierre Hardy boutique (9-11 Place du Palais-Bourbon). HD pictures: www.ecal.ch/en/1649 “I really enjoyed interacting with the students. At ECAL, my role was very different from that of a teacher coaching the students on their work – as I myself was the subject I knew the stuff inside out! Just show me half a centimetre of a heel and I instantly recognise the model which I created”, says Pierre Hardy. The ECAL Bachelor Photography students thus worked on various collections produced by the Parisian designer in the past fifteen years in order to give them a new visual interpretation. Photographer Philippe Jarrigeon comments on the method he chose to conduct this workshop at ECAL: “Together with Pierre Hardy s team we selected fifteen pairs of shoes in the archives – a purely practical decision which allowed us to keep the models as long as we wanted at ECAL. In addition, this allowed students to free themselves from seasonal trends. At the beginning of the workshop in October 2015, each student got a model on which to work by drawing lots”. This project allowed the students to question the relationship between photography and footwear, and by extension to confront the interconnection between photography and fashion. Milo Keller, Head of Photography at ECAL, observes that “Students, working without any business constraints in that case, are less formatted than a professional and therefore often offer unexpected approaches”. The results are indeed surprising and offbeat, sometimes even provocative or poetic, but always treat the original creations with respect. Workshop in Berlin To celebrate the launch of a new master s degree in photography at ECAL in 2016, the first year students worked together with Taiyo Onorato and Milo Keller (Head of Photography at ECAL) in Berlin for one week to produce a book about the city s architecture in turmoil. Using the wide streets of Berlin as a blank canvas, the students were encouraged to interpret rather than document the spaces of the vast metropolis and build their own story of its distinctive character. The picturesdepict the shift that Berlin has undergone in the past, from the perspective of unexpected encounters, vacant spaces, countless construction sites and shared revelations. The book was printed and bound at Helmut Newton Foundation during the C/O Berlin Book Days, 29.9 – 2.10.2016. Participants: Johannes Bauer, Vilhelm Björndahl, Senta Simond, Nicolas Toulotte, Laura Zoccarato, Marc Asekhame, Calum Douglas, Bastien Gomez, Karla Hiraldo Voleau, Yuliya Khan, Stéphane Mocan, Eunwook Nam, Shin Young Park, Robert Swierczynski, Maria Tasula, Justinas Vilutis, Maria Grazia Grasso The book has been produced in collaboration with C/O Berlin for the Book Days 2016. ECAL at Festival Images Vevey,10.09–02.10.2016,Festival Images, Vevey From 10 September to 2 October 2016, Festival Images Vevey will once again transform the little town of Vevey into the Swiss capital of photography. Visitors will get to discover 75 projects based on the theme of ‘immersion. Besides the numerous graduates, ECAL offers various installations: ----- ECAL/Florian Amoser – Quai Maria Belgia Quantified Landscape introduces an ongoing research project on the photographic transposition of space on a flat surface. Deep in the heart of underground galleries, Florian Amoser maps out the relief by placing a motor-mounted laser on the ground. The light beam slowly sweeps the walls of the cave, thereby drawing a continuous line according to the principle of contour lines. These long exposures create black and white landscapes that refer as much to analogue practice as to the digital finish of 3D modelling. These pictures are exhibited on display panels facing Lake Geneva. Original scenography by Festival Images Vevey ----- ECAL/Marvin Leuvrey – Quai Maria Belgia Revelations offers a fantasy-like narrative by immersing into Lake Geneva images of fragmented bathers. Leuvrey combines photography with visual research by applying soil, sand and trash collected from the lakeside onto the negatives and trying out various experiments with acetone, paint and oil. He also integrates water into his work by using the lake as a developing bath. By inviting visitors to tread on the images exhibited on platforms along the waterfront, the installation which starts off on Quai Maria Belgia prolongs the experimental process that Leuvrey uses on his photographs. Original scenography by Festival Images Vevey and Bachelor Industrial Design students (Margaux De Giovannini, Maki Nakaya-Sommet, Mélanie Zufferey). ----- ECAL PhotoJukeBox – La Ferblanterie Photography and music have much closer ties than we might think. Many musicians have paid tribute in one form or another to this mode of artistic expression, including Paul Simon (Kodachrome), Neil Young (Distant Camera), Lady Gaga (Paparazzi), Kraftwerk (Das Model), Barbara (Si la photo est bonne), Eddy Mitchell (La photo des jours heureux), Duran Duran (Girls on Film), The Cure (Pictures of You), Depeche Mode (Photographic) and Ringo Starr (Photograph). Festival Images has invited some thirty first-year Bachelor Photography students from ECAL to produce in one day a video clip for a song. The result is presented in the form of a jukebox that enables festivalgoers to select and listen to a tune by their favourite artist while enjoying a tailor-made video clip. A production by Festival Images Vevey and ECAL. Curating: Stefano Stoll, Milo Keller ----- ECAL Scenography Bachelor of Industrial Design students worked on orginal scenography to present the projects of the various artists. ----- Festival Images Vevey Information Dates: 10 September – 2 October 2016 Free entrance Opening: Saturday 10 September Opening hours for indoor exhibitions: Every day, 11:00-19:00 Festival Images is an outdoor photography festival, which encourages you to walk around the city to discover installations on walls, in streets and in parks. documenta space in time documenta space in time is an editorial archive work on one of the most important art events, Kassel documenta. The book compiles the ten first editions of documenta at the Museum Fridericianum, from 1955 to 1997. We approached this work as an archeology of the archive, with different stratum of research and highlights. This work has allowed us to focus on our interest in books publishing, he confronted us with passion to issues related to the publication of an archive and its graphic and editorial responses. documenta space in time is an editorial archive work on one of the most important art events, Kassel documenta. Alexandra Chernopazova – The visual identity for the Swiss Museum of Games, the unique museum of board games in Europe. While creating a visual identity, my goal was to design an instantly recognizable, colorful and contemporary style, that reflects its personality. Inspired by gameplay experience and wonderful atmosphere of playing process I started creating a typography based on combinations of geometric shapes and colors. Due to this project, I could experiment and discover new typographical forms and create a tool "Alphabet". This tool allowed me to create a graphical language and communication. Mylène Dreyer – Scribb Scribb is a computer game in which the physical area scanned by the mouse is an integral part of the interaction. The player must draw some black areas, detected by the mouse, to be able to evolve in the game. So, in the same time, he has to manage the position of the mouse and the surface on which it is placed. This double reading questions our way of switching from digital to analog. The mouse, diverted from its usual role, is not only used as an extension of the hand, but as a physical object influenced by its environment.

Lina Vozniuk-Berzhaner – The Ptolemy Mission The Ptolemy Mission is an interactive installation that encourages to experience the excitement of exploration by taking a look at everyday things from a different perspective. The project originated from my passion for the Space Exploration and my admiration of the beauty of the Universe. I wanted to show that ordinary objects we hold in our hands and think of them as simple and familiar can, in reality, be far from our understanding, like remote planets observed through a telescope. Exploring such ordinary objects can be as fascinating and surprising as exploring faraway planets.

Mirko Stanchieri – Pyrite Pyrite is a puzzle game available on a tablet. The goal is simple: the player must reach a target randomly positioned in space by building a path and this in a limited number of shots. The view is an isometric projection which makes in particularly complicated and singles it out. In addition, the player s levels and used paths freeze, creating new obstacles and increasing the game s complexity. This project and its minimal universe is a continuation of the aesthetics that I have experienced at ECAL since the beginning of my studies.

Pablo Perez – AudioSight AudioSight is a musical game on smartphone that has the specific feature of not using the screen. The game s principle is based solely on the sound the user hears using headphones. The only interaction between the game and the player is the latter s head movements. The theme of sound in space, both real and virtual, is a topic that fascinates me - especially in the current context of democratisation of virtual reality, where our sensory perception switches between the virtual world and reality.

Océane Bacher – A N I M A ANIMA is a catalog of images and ideas inviting to imagine an unfinished film about the afterlife. Through concepts such as encryption, symbolism, surrealism, randomness and infinite, the book is a puzzle to decipher. By an infinite combination of pages, there may be a multitude of possible books, films, stories... This editorial research allowed me to question the medium of the book in its structure and reading. Hermann Eidenbenz Teaching Graphic Design Hermann Eidenbenz (1902–1992) was one of the first professionals in Switzerland to describe himself as a graphic designer. From the 1910s to the 1950s, he was involved in graphic design education in Zurich, Magdeburg, Basel and Brunswick, first as a student and later as a teacher. Starting from a broad research on historical type design education, the project culminated in the discovery of two consistent convolutes of didactic materials. A collection of glass plates documenting a lettering course in Magdeburg, Germany (1926–1932) and a set of student works reflecting a course in basic design exercises in Basel (1940–1943), both held by Eidenbenz as a teacher. Together with documents from private and public archives in Basel, Berlin, Brunswick, Magdeburg and Zürich, the outcome of the project sheds light on a significant chapter in Swiss graphic design, shortly before it became internationally known.Main applicantsECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne (project leader) Research team (researcher) (supervisor) (supervisor)Periodoctober 2014 – november 2016PartnersECAL/University of Art and Design LausanneDisseminationPublications Sarah Klein, Die Schriftklasse von Hermann Eidenbenz, in Maramm. Heejae Yang – Actual, Diploma Project by Heejae Yang Actual is a sans serif font family inspired by the purity fo geometric shapes. One of the drawbacks of early geometric typefaces, such as those from the bauhaus, was their defective readability in small sizes due to the fact that they were made with a merely formal and conceptual approach. Whereas, if the fonts were revised, they could easily lose their original geometric character. The project aims to produce a typeface that works for body texts while still maintaining a geometric flavour. To achieve this, the optical corrections of the absolute geometric shapes were reduced to a minimum. Actual is a sans serif font family inspired by the purity fo geometric shapes. Quentin Lacombe – Event Horizon Event Horizon is the astronomic term that describes the boundary around a black hole beyond which events cannot propagate, therefore producing space and time warps. This book is an attempt to construct a personal cosmology through photographic means. In this curved cosmos, different entities – organic matter, animals, inanimate and architectural objects, all having equal agency – roam along an endless horizon line. Zoé Aubry – Comfort Zone Comfort Zone is a video installation that questions in a hypnotically way the ambiguous boundary between resisting and breaking up. These images create a space where pressure, rhythm and the everyday confront each other, which challenges the viewer s endurance. My parallel interest for electromagnetic waves originates from their double nature both invisible and in concrete interaction with living beings, which echoes the feeling of social pressure. Between a body being deformed by wind and the immobility of a suffocated face, temporality is altered through performed actions. Marine Vallotton – Bleu Horizon This book is the portrait of my interaction with a hypersensitive boy. I approach him and discover his singularity trough the points of view that we share: sensitive and excited. Objects are means to interpret his peculiarities and places are the ground allowing his release. “You always enact a lot of laws to feel reassured, but you don t need any laws to say something. Because when you work, you always have to be on the edge, otherwise it s not interesting. You always have to be on the edge of sight (…).” This book is the portrait of my interaction with a hypersensitive boy. Hatred Hatred aims to decipher the places, individuals and situations that interact with hate-but also the origins, consequences and questions it raises. Each issue of Hatred combines literary essays about hate with other contemporary topics. The theme of this issue is Non-Proliferation, similar to the nuclear weapons treaty. However, the goal is to find ways to end hate. By understanding its origins, it is possible to find more or less peaceful solutions.

Comme des Loups The Wolf patrol, led by Julie, a young scout leader, goes off wilderness camping in the mountains. Hugo, a high-ranking scout goes with them to assess the young woman s leadership skills. A film by Aude Sublet, photographed by Raphaël Dubach Fiction / 20 min Synopsis The Wolf patrol, led by Julie, a young scout leader, goes off wilderness camping in the mountains. Hugo, a high-ranking scout goes with them to assess the young woman s leadership skills. While the young wolves have fun, Julie recalls her first camp when Hugo was a handsome, young scoutmaster. Comment How to film certain scouting rituals? How to frame a group of children? How to get closer to the natural light in the mountains? Raphaël Dubach, student cinematographer, and the young director Aude Sublet answer these questions. Together they have found the right distance to look at, forming an almost organic duo. Like wolves is filmed with grace and fluidity, mainly with a handheld camera, in sumptuous yet never illustrative settings. Between the darkness of the night games and the whiteness of the day, the love desire of the adult scouts oscillates, under the inquisitive and amused gaze of the "little wolves". «ECAL Graphic Design» exhibition at the D Days Paris,30.05–05.06.2016,Boon, Paris Invited by Eyes on Talents, ECAL/University of Art & Design Lausanne presents an exhibition of projects realised by students of the Bachelor Graphic Design and the Master Art Direction on the occasion of the D Days Paris (Boon Gallery) from 31 May to 5 June 2016 (cocktail 1 June from 7pm to 11pm). HD Images ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne has long been recognised as a world reference in terms of – amongst others – graphic design. «ECAL Graphic Design» exhibition Monday 30 May from 11am to 5pm for the press and private visits Tuesday 31 May to Sunday 5 June, from 10am to 8pm Cocktail Wednesday 1 June, from 7pm to 11pm Boon 9 Rue de Lesdiguières 75004 Paris http://boonparis.com Book "ECAL Graphic Design" Distributed by JRP|Ringier Collection Anthologies & Art Theory www.jrp-ringier.com Edited by: Angelo Benedetto, Lionel, Bovier, Vincent Devaud (Graphic design), Gilles Gavillet (Graphic design), Alexis Georgacopoulos Authors: Angelo Benedetto, Alexis Georgacopoulos, François Rappo Photography: Philippe Fragnière Technical specifications: Hardcover, 225 x 295 mm, 160 pages, 64 color images, English/French, March 2016 ISBN: 978-3-03764-455-3 Price: CHF 48 / EUR 40 / £ 30 / US 49.95

ECAL at Baselworld with Reuge,17–24.03.2016,Messeplatz, Basel On the occasion of Baselworld from 17th to 24 March 2016,, ECAL and Reuge present four music boxes realised by students of the MAS Design for Luxury & Craftsmanship. MEDITATION by ECAL/Clément Beaugé This project is a new interpretation of what a music box can do. Inspired by the idea of using your senses, this is a piece that you can enjoy visually, you can feel, you can smell and of course, you can listen to. The magical music, the candle sent with its delicate light will transport you into world of relaxation. It won t be long before your new music box becomes your favorite ritual for relaxing at home. This music box is simple and elegantwith a pleasant surprise, the mechanical movement makes the candle turn. The candle platform isdirectly attached to the spring-housing, so when the movement starts you can see the candle turn around the music box. Approximately 8 to 9 turns when the movement is fully charged. HARMONY by ECAL/Einat Kirschner This music box is inspired by contemporary design. At first glance the music box appears to be a modern speaker or portable radio. This look allows the piece to easily fit the modern style that speaks to a younger audience while still enjoying the soothing traditional sound of a music box. The design was created using the traditional music box materials but with a new interpretation of the design. The key, which becomes a main element in the design, takes its shape from the modern collection of Reuge music boxes and the volume button of radios and speakers. This music box can be both hung on a wall or stationed on a table. With this new design we give you the possibility of having a unique music box that can be very easily moved from your living to your bedroom or the bathroom, ... The perforated pattern on the box allows the music to come through and highlights the key that turns slowly while the music is playing. DISCOVER by ECAL/Jungyou Choi A surprising piece that opens in an original way. Often our music boxes are closed and the movement inside isn t easily seen or, sometimes its not even possible to see the movement at all! With this original opening concept we wanted to show more of the beautiful movement and allow the costumer to have a playful music box. There are two metal pieces that cover the movement and protect it. These covers slide in one direction from the front to the back or in the opposite direction. Just slide the first or second cover or both and discover a beautiful golden-colored 36 note musical movement. The graphics on the first cover, made with holes, allows you to see the second cover and creates a dynamic object with an overlay of colours and materials. ALPHORN by ECAL/Pauline Masson Limited edition of 10 pieces signed by the Swiss craftsman. What could be more natural then for a Swiss company with over 150 years of experience to be inspired by an iconic Swiss instrument, the Alphorn. This music boxis a reinterpretation of the traditional Alphorn which is a symbolic object of Switzerland and the Swiss craftsmanship. The box is made from a very rare wood, the exceptional resonance spruce. This wood which is over 200 years old is the fundamental type of wood chosen by stringed instrument makers. It combines lightness, ensuring an excellent response to vibrations, with rigidity and tonicity guaranteeing substantial mechanical resistance. It originates from the Risoud Forest, (located right next to our factory) one of the largest and oldest in Europe. Even in the age of Stradivarius, specialists sourced tone wood from this forest which, thanks to its poor soil and its harsh climate, produces wood of exceptional quality. Be surprised by the amazing sound of this special music box, made by the magical alliance of this unique wood and our mechanical musical movement. www.baselworld.com http://www.reuge.com/home

Exhibition "1020 Renens" 1020 Renens Exhibition photo 03 mars – 23 mars 2016 Place du Marché, Renens It s all a question of time. A photograph is shot in a fraction of a second, in one instant. A city changes, it transforms; and to be defined into a new image, it could take years, decades or centuries. During one year, the photographer Nicolas Faure has worked together with the 15 students of the 3rd year photography class at ECAL in Renens. They explored various themes such as the documentary of an African community or the life of teenagers in schools or at the pool as well as the every day life at the office or the intimacy of retired people. The images, assembled in a book as a tribute to Nicolas Faure, are pieces of reality that are sometimes raw and sometimes reworked. They let our mind travel around even when we are still here, in Switzerland, in Renens. 1020 RenensExhibition photo03 mars – 23 mars 2016Place du Marché, RenensIt s all a question of time. For this forth edition, the Swiss Cinematheque presented last September a collection of movies, short and features, anomy s or not, adds, scientific or artistic documents... all of which where found in the Cinémathèques archives. The 3 editing students from Ecal/Head, helped by their tutor Jean-Christophe Hym, cut and uncut, paste and unpaste in order to create their own new short films. They then send them to the music composing students from HEMU who create an original soundtrack on this basis. This collaboration ended up into 7 short movies that were screened in the Cinémathèque, while nine other students from HEMU s Jazz section played the newly composed sound tracks.

Collaboration ECAL/Emlio Pucci,29.09.2015,Granaiolo The famous Italian brand Emilio Pucci pairs with the ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne for a collaboration born at Granaiolo, the brand s archive and talent center nearby Florence. During a three-day workshop led by Vincent Jacquier, a selection of students and assistants from the school s Visual Communication Department had the opportunity to explore and reinterpret signature print «Interactive Scarves» is the first of a series of surprising projects originated from their endeavors and achievements during the workshop. The designer Pauline Saglio has developed a three-pieced installation that proposes an innovative and poetic way to discover a scarf. The colors, shapes and compositions of each Emilio Pucci print are enhanced by light and sound to alter the perception of the iconic object, offering visitors a magical experience that stimulates all of the senses. Created by Clémence Chatel (Bachelor Graphic Design graduate), the second project is “Dolce Vita”, a set of irreverent patterns brimming with motifs of Italian culture – pasta, ice cream and more – in this case used to deck out skateboards rather than Pucci s coveted fashions. Produced in a limited edition, the skateboards are available in seven bubbly prints on two different styles. A special video dedicated to this project is available on Nowness www.emiliopucci.com

Interactive scarves When you match the prints of prints with a famous school of art and design, the result can only be explosive! Emilio Pucci pairs with the Ecole Cantonal d Art de Lausanne (ECAL) for a collaboration born at Granaiolo, the brand s archive and talent center nearby Florence. During a three-day workshop led by Vincent Jacquier, a selection of students and assistants from the school s Visual Communication Department had the opportunity to explore and reinterpret signature prints. Interactive Scarves is the first of a series of surprising projects originated from their endeavors and achievements during the workshop.

Romain Cazier – Rec All This project is a personal interpretation of the geometrical puzzle game, widely popular on mobile. Taking some of this genre s features, I also wanted to stand out and propose a singular universe, where strange creatures with a cyclic behaviour are generated from a simple gesture. It is composed of two parts: an “arcade” mode with different levels the player must resolve, and a “sandbox” mode where he can generate creatures at will. Rec All is the continuation of playful and technical experimentations I initiated at ECAL.

Bastien Girschig – Wimbi Wimbi is a riddle game based on a peculiar interaction: Instead of touching the screen as usual, the player uses the table as an input to create the waves he needs to unlock the targets. As the levels rise, he will have to be more and more precise, and make good use of chain reactions, bounding, and clipping of the waves. This project gave me the opportunity to work on a combination of real and virtual spaces, allowing the game to extend beyond the simple screen, to create richer interactions.

Vanja Jelic & Rasmus Schoenning – AUTONATOVETO As part of an attempt to unify Bosnia, NATO decided in 1998 to change the licence plates indicating the region into an anonymous combination of letters and numbers. The system was undermined by drivers proud of their ethnicity, who found ways of accessorising their cars with stickers and other insignia. On our journey through Bosnia we collected videos, photography and archive material to document the development of the different identities. This book is a documentation and research into how people responded to the western attempt to unify the diversity within Bosnia. Victor Férier – SkyRod SkyRod is a family of three games that transform tiny physical objects into video game heroes. Suspended with a rod fixed on the screen, the objects become integrated into the virtual environment of the screen. Moving in front of the webcam, the user make the objects interact with the content of the screen. I combined simple visual effects with advanced technologies to create intuitive interactions playing with space and perception, which are main subjects in my work.
