ECAL & EXECAL Residences at La Becque,20.03.2019,La Becque, La Tour-de-Peilz UPDATE (20.03.19) EXECAL Residence at La Becque – Announcement of the laureates. UPDATE (20.03.19) EXECAL Residence at La Becque – Announcement of the laureates ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne is delighted to announce the laureates of the first EXECAL Residences at La Becque I Artists Residency. This initiative, part of the partnership that binds the two institutions, aims at fostering research projects and promoting excellence in art and design education. Each will be granted with a month-long residency program, between July and September 2019, with the objective to develop a project connected to their practices but also to the thematic focus of La Becque, the exploration of the intersection of nature and technology. Therefore, the jury composed of Catherine Othenin-Girard (President, EXECAL –Association des anciens étudiants et des amis de l ECAL), Luc Meier (Director, La Becque) and Alexis Georgacopoulos (Director, ECAL) selected: Aladin Borioli (BA Photography) Since 2014, Aladin Borioli has pursued his DYI research project "Apian", looking at the links between honeybees and humans, and at how both beings mould each other. Being drawn closer to the humanities, Aladin graduated in 2018 with an MA in Visual and Media Anthropology at the Freie Universität Berlin. "Apian" has been then presented in artistic contexts as well as in anthropological forms. Pauline Lemberger & Iris Andreadis (BA Industrial Design) In 2015, Pauline Lemberger co-founded “Bouchée Double”, in Brussels, a studio where she explores the culinary world at the intersection of scenography, photography, product design and illustration. She investigates cuisine through a global approach, enhanced during residencies in Japan and Mexico but also through the conceptualization of pop-up restaurants. For her part, Iris Andreadis is currently studying architecture in Paris. At the heart of her practice lays her deep fascination for building processes and structures, as well as for smart objects and their economy of means, all of which she had the chance to observe during stays in Greece and Hong Kong. Thomas Grogan (BA Industrial Design) With a background in industrial and speculative design, Thomas Grogan, based in London, has developed an artistic practice that investigates current and future social issues around emerging technologies through various artistic outputs like sculpture, installation, animation and digital platform. His work uses a visual language that is strongly influenced by corporate branding, manufacturing and product hacking. ECAL presents Loucia Carlier à Artgenève,31.01–03.02.2019,Palexpo, Geneva From 31 January to 3 February at artgenève, ECAL presents an exhibition and a magazine cofounded by Loucia Carlier, a graduate of the Bachelor (2015) and Master (2017) Fine Arts programmes. “This piece of wall is invisible, if one ignores the large fresco that takes place there. A large quantity of images and symbols are penciled, printed and embossed in it. They crossover each other, like in a medieval version of the library in Interstellar, where references to SF, since its inception, encounter various folklore traditions. The rust-colored ship, a vessel, a spacecraft, floats in the middle of the Magonia, like a suffering craft that has become a weird receptacle for phantasmagorical journeys. In the smaller formats, living rooms elements stand out, deserted by their tenants. Absurdly apocalyptic visions emerge as a backdrop.” Klima is a print magazine which gives a voice to creative, singular and conscious individuals by relating art, activism and academia. ECAL book – 2018 To be a filmmaker in 2018 is to be a bit of a spiritualist. The rarefaction of the film object, humble, palpable, which weighs in the hand, is a fact. Its historical place of diffusion, the theatre, is also disappearing in Europe. Even DVDs and USB keys are relics of yesterday s world. Modern computers don t care about the ports where these objects could drop anchor. There is hardly any material trace of the cinematographic creation anymore. Some data stored on a cloud on the other side of the world, wind in a cloud. The filmmaker s job is therefore to produce the invisible for nomadic souls, not to say wandering souls, in a bus in Tokyo or a café in Denver. It is to speak to the spirits. There is no nostalgia in this observation of the times, just the desire to adapt to the Zeitgeist. At ECAL, we love objects. Like Georges Perec, who was "all about the language that surrounds things, about what s underneath, about everything that feeds them, about everything that s injected into them. Because it is a language, the cinema is matter. It agglomerates what we are, we the creators, we the spectators, in a communion of thought. To testify to this encounter, an object was needed. And the most beautiful of all: a book. To say what nourishes us, but also what we give to eat. The encounters, the essays, the filming, the trips, the debates that make up the living and vibrant body of our school. The one that asks the only question that matters: for whom are we doing what? May this book be the Ouija board that allows us to communicate with the spirits, here and elsewhere, today and tomorrow. Many thanks to Rachel Noël, coordinator of the ECAL s Cinema Department, initiator and curator of this first volume. And to all the contributors. Lionel Baier / Head of the Film Department

Workshop Renate Buser For a week, the Swiss artist Renate Buser led a workshop with students in first year Bachelor Photography. The ECAL building, a former factory converted into an art school in 2006 by architect Bernhard Tschumi, was the starting point for their photographic explorations. The rules of the game: two black and white films per student and darkroom prints that helped define the initial framework. By taking advantage of the constraints, the varied results illustrate the creativity of the students who experiment with options in shooting, drawing and installation. Workshop Antony Cairns For one week Ecals bachelor students had the chance to work with photographer and artist Antony Cairns. The workshops aim was to investigate a variety of processes within the history of photography. Since the invention of the medium, photography has shared a close relationship with technology. Students had the chance to explore a range of forgotten techniques and machines to create artworks around the theme of time while researching its connection to other art pieces, films, books, and images that shared the same theme. Cairns practice has been hugely inspired by cyberpunk science fiction and Futurology. These subject matters led him to explore new ways to interpret the photographic medium. Benjamin Bucher – Hunters Two men in their sixties spend day and night in a camper. They hunt meteorological balloons coming down to earth. These objects don t have a value for the scientists anymore, but do become the reason for a treasure hunt. Documentary / 17min Synopsis Two men in their sixties spend day and night in a camper. They hunt meteorological balloons coming down to earth. These objects don t have a value for the scientists anymore, but do become the reason for a treasure hunt. For my documentary film "Hunters" I had the pleasure to meet two men with an adventurous spirit. They share a peculiar activity that depends on wind. I sometimes had the impression to film grown children. Comment The three hunters of... "hunters" don t have guns but they take us on a poetic journey to hunt the weather probe! Benjmain Bucher follows them in their absurd, harmless and good-natured quest. He offers us a film outside of the economy, a stroll off the beaten path, a short moment of pure gratuity. And it is precious. Annette Dutertre / Editor, head of the Editing Department at La Fémis
Yatoni Roy Cantu – La Source In the middle of the darkness of a chalet of a past century, between the cracks and the dirt of an old mirror, somebody appears. It is Lisbeth. She moves forward in her dressing gown with precaution, trying not to wake Anne who is still sleeping. In front of her reflection, she discovers her shoulder. The skin is cracked, darkened and in blood. The disease is back. Fiction / 17 min Synopsis In the middle of the darkness of a chalet of a past century, between the cracks and the dirt of an old mirror, somebody appears. It is Lisbeth. She moves forward in her dressing gown with precaution, trying not to wake Anne who is still sleeping. In front of her reflection, she discovers her shoulder. The skin is cracked, darkened and in blood. The disease is back. Comment Attracted by genre cinema, inhabited by the need to tell this story, Yatoni Roy Cantu knew, during the writing process, how to show tenacity and great capacities of rebound to make us share his singular universe, made of mysticism, strangeness and sensuality. Olivier Loustau / Actor, screenwriter, director
Garage At the edge of a rail traffic, in an abandoned garage four people of different backgrounds live in a perfect harmony. Fiction / 20 min Synopsis Milda is a young lituanian dancer. She lives in a garage with three roommates. Even though they all have different backgrounds, it seems like they really found each other well and live in a perfect harmony. One night, some freaking noises wake them up : constructions works have started on the railway, just next to them. Those sounds announce the very near demolition of their home. From then, Milda, Alan, Nadine and Selena try to forget that their life togeter is about to end. Comment The film Garage, by Lorraine, and edited by Brandon Beytrison, seems to me to be emblematic of what the journey of an edit is. The first cut was far from the final film... Out of fear of boring the spectator, of assuming her scenario, Lorraine had artificially stretched the story and, in doing so, killed the very idea of her film! Dryness of the scenes, imbalance between the characters, mechanical rhythm, etc. Lorraine couldn t see her dailies anymore and Brandon was limited to pacing, for lack of direction. So we went back to the dailies to find Lorraine s original intentions, and they were there! It was a matter of finding the heart of the scenes, of redeploying them around the details that Lorraine had so meticulously put in place during the shooting and of giving back its soul to the film. Brandon then became a real force of proposal! The rest is up to them, and from the second cut, the film was there, obvious, in place. From that moment on, their collaboration was able to work fully to achieve the film you are about to see! Fabrice Rouaud / Editor
Antoine Flahaut – Wasteland Jérôme has failed his High-School leaving exams. He spend the day with his best friend, David before to go to a party. Fiction / 18 min Synopsis Jérôme has failed his High-School leaving exams. His best friend, David, has passed his exams and is getting ready to leave. They spend the day hanging out around their village, where they know every nook and cranny, and in the evening go to a party with their old schoolmates... Summer is just beginning but their friendship seems doomed to end. Comment Antoine Flahaut was to write a feature film script to conclude his studies at ECAL. His preliminary documentation work soon took on the scope of a gigantic research project, commensurate with the ambition of the project. By telling the story of a young man from a working class family in Montbéliard in the spring of 1968, Antoine was indeed proposing to resurrect a world. Wasteland is a gesture. An almost improvised short film, faithful in the background to the scenario of the feature film, but which also frees itself from it to better reconnect with the original inspiration of its author. A series of sensitive and fragile moments that reveal a soul, that of a boy on the border between childhood and manhood. A poem of vertigo in the face of the opacity of life, between nostalgia and the call of the sea, between early disenchantment and great hopes. Emmanuel Salinger / Actor, screenwriter, director
Juliette Menthonnex – Anywhere Mia, a former trapeze artist from Florida finds herself at the head of a small circus with her husband in German-speaking Switzerland. Despite an exhausting nomadic lifestyle, Mia has faith in the circus tradition and patience while passing on this cultural heritage to her daughter Simone. Documentary / 32 min Synopsis Mia, a former trapeze artist from Florida finds herself at the head of a small circus with her husband in German-speaking Switzerland. Despite an exhausting nomadic lifestyle, Mia has faith in the circus tradition and patience while passing on this cultural heritage to her daughter Simone. Comment Anywhere is the story of a life on the road where destination matters little. With great delicacy, Juliette Menthonnex places her empathetic and benevolent gaze in the heart of the Stey family, one of those great circus families in which destinies seem sealed from birth. Here, it is all about learning and transmission, work and perseverance in order to transform sweat into diamonds, caravans into palaces. Juliette accurately films this flight forward from the circus of our childhood: that of the glittery acrobats and the pom-poms, with the disappearance of a world in the background. There is a nostalgia of beauty in this backstage scene. Raphaël Sohier / Sound editor
Lour Rambert Preiss – Stone Age In a vast stone quarry, an explosion reveals an object from the past. Fiction / 22 min Synopsis A great rock quarry today. Antonin, 27, discovers a face in the rock after an explosion. We shut down the sector, the company is stormed by mysterious scientists. During free time, we speculate on the origin of the face... Antonin s obsession grows. Comment Lou s film asked essential questions to him: to represent or not to represent? To put in form, at what point? The film is inscribed on this fine border, where our imaginations as spectators can be engulfed if we are not forbidden to enter by too many "pronouncements". Lou creates a space of cinema, situated between the spectator and the screen, in a dialogue oriented but not constrained. Thus, the film has the space to exist within us, and it succeeds in bringing to life the mystery it does not define. Each of the students, in his or her own place, has had to face these questions. And if Lionel Baier were Lao Tseu, he would tell them "The Tao that we try to grasp is not the Tao itself; the name we want to give it is not its proper name." Uh... Lou and his editor Gabrielle Stemmer knew how to play skillfully with duration and its variations, with the play of actors and non-actors together, with the relationships of scale (of space and time), with the interference of the supernatural... In short, Big, Small, Doubt... Bravo to him and his team. Alain Gomis / Director

Summer University Istanbul For their graduation trip, the 3rd year students went to Istanbul. Accompanied by Stéphane Halmaï-Voisard and Chris Kabel and collaborating with students from Bilgi University, they had to create souvenirs of the city. Some were able to collaborate directly with local craftspeople. The projects were exhibited at the Istanbul Design Biennial at the end of this trip and had the chance to see their ECAL x Mac Guffin project also exhibited there at that time.
Credo The aim of the Centre intercantonal d information sur les croyances (CIC) is to map the religious diversity of our regions and to explain in a neutral way how the cantonal communities function. The director, Brigitte Knobel, contacted the ECAL to create a visual cartography of the communities. Second-year students were asked to photograph the project. They worked throughout the year on an assigned religious community, selected beforehand according to geographical and diversity criteria.

Ardita Meha – Hvala mama « I was a two-year-old as we had to flee the city of Zvornik in Bosnia. In 1995 my father arrived in Switzerland as a refugee. We joined him only in 1996. As a child, I used to imagine a story around a reproduction of Renoir s painting Bal du moulin de la Galette. The story was about my grandmother, my mother and my father as they first met, and about a painter who had died during the war. I would stage vivid memories I didn t have, with the idea of war always present unconsciously. In my family everyone kept silent about our story. But their gestures never lied. »

Dongwoo Kim – Moment Catcher Drawings appeared in our culture through the desire of leaving a trace of our reality, the same spirit that brought to life film and photography. In virtual space, experiences being as ephemeral as in real life, the desire to grasp and document them also exists. Is it possible to anchor a trace in a spatial context inside a virtual dimension? Based on Augmented Reality, Moment Catcher proposes its user to keep a virtual, spatialized sound imprint in shapes that can be drawn by moving a smartphone in real space.
Callum Ross – You can t see the mountain from the peak In the present day, the evolution of the quality of CGI forces us to question our relationship to digital representations of our world and the impact they have on us. This project explores the current ambiguity of the digital image through an interactive short film based around mountain imagery, used for its symbolism of an everlasting geological phenomenon, but which paradoxically, are some of the fastest images to generate. Through the use of a smartphone, we navigate this variable experience between real and virtual, gradually questioning the reality of the situation that is shown.

Workshop Olivier Cablat On July 2nd 2018 Ecal s second year Bachelor photography students presented their "guerrilla communication" project at the opening of Rencontres d Arles. Under the direction of Olivier Cablat (artist, teacher and artistic director of Cosmos Arles Books) and Milo Keller (head of the Photography Department at ECAL), the 2nd year Bachelor students analysed and diverged modes of communication and diffusion for one semester. Both physical and digital strategies have been developed for the field work in Arles: from wild posting, to live webcam, from propaganda to social networks. During the opening week of the festival, the students transformed a 55 m² room of the Cosmos Arles Books into an editorial office, exhibition and work space. This project between installation and caricature, aims to augment our relationship to our society of spectacle, where the speed of dissemination of information sometimes makes the true and false indistinguishable. A newspaper of 250 copies will be printed daily as a physical witness of this experience at multiple media levels. Fuori catalogo / Out of production The Fuori catalogo research project calls into question the way we think about the life cycles of contemporary design objects by shifting focus from a product s birth and lifespan to its “end moment”. The research team led by Anniina Koivu (Head of Master Theory, ECAL) and Rosanna Pavoni (scientific director of Fondazione Studio Museo Vico Magistretti), explored the important yet under-researched topic of why and how products cease to be available on the market by examining the vast body of work left behind by Italian architect and product designer Vico Magistretti (1920–2006). One of the seminal figures in postwar Italian design, he based his work on a close collaboration with manufacturers, creating 334 products and furniture objects. Yet only 65 of these design classics are still in production as of January 2020. Researchers drew on the extensive archives of the Fondazione Vico Magistretti, analysed specialist journals and conducted interviews with manufacturers and many of the original decision-makers investigating the manifold factors underpinning the decision to cease production of twelve Magistretti s iconic creations, here employed as case studies. They are also the focus of a portfolio of new images created by ECAL alumni from the Photography courses. The outputs of the research project are disseminated through the book Vico Magistretti: Stories of Objects, published by Triest verlag with graphic design by NORM, available in Italian an English editions.Main applicantsECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne Rosanna Pavoni (Fondazione studio museo Vico Magistretti)Research teamLecturers and researchers Maddalena Dalla Mura Francesco Zanot Research assistant Photographers PartnerFondazione studio museo Vico MagistrettiPeriodmay 2017 – august 2018Supported byECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne Strategic fund of the University of Applied Sciences Western Switzerland (HES-SO RCDAV)DisseminationPublication Anniina Koivu, Vico Magistretti. Robert Swierczynski – Restless «Restless» aims to expose the discomfort of ordinary life, directing at-tention towards anxiety - a feeling that dominates modern humanism and plagues people regardless of their status. Both as a book and an installation, the project resembles a voyeuristic catalog of weird moments that we wouldn t be eager to flaunt, even though they instantly bring us back to life through a sincere and straightforward observation. Formed by a non-linear combination of events, the photos remain thematically and aesthetically independent, acting only as elements of a much larger narrative. «Restless» aims to expose the discomfort of ordinary life, directing at-tention towards anxiety - a feeling that dominates modern humanism and plagues people regardless of their status. ECAL x QWSTION in Lausanne,21–30.06.2018,QWSTION Store, Lausanne A joint project between Swiss bag brand QWSTION and ECAL students of the Master Product Design programme, exploring ways of carrying and using the new sustainable and lightweight material CottonShell®. Ten prototypes have been selected for display at QWSTION Lausanne from 22 to 30 June. Cocktail will be held on 21 June from 5pm. Images HD In the project led by Christian Paul Kaegi, Swiss Designer and Creative Director at QWSTION, the sustainably produced CottonShell® was the starting point for an extensive research. CottonShell® has so far been used for clothing only and its unique construction makes it wa-ter-resistant without the use of any coating. Questioning the norm, using straightforward materials and integrating functionality in effortless ways are the core brand values of QWSTION which completed the brief. «A good answer is the result of the right question. I think it s a really important part of studying to keep questioning the status quo, of society, technology and their relation.» mentions Christian Paul Kaegi. The student s engagement with both the QWSTION brand as well as the new material resulted in interesting new ideas and concepts going beyond the ordinary: a scarf with hidden pockets aims to challenge airline staff, a new method of protecting contents inspired by bubblewrap makes for minimal carry, and a backpack with integrated rain coat tackles unpleasant weather surprises. After previously being presented at Vienna Design Week the projects developed by the students will be exhibited in the hometown of ECAL, in Lausanne. From the 22nd to the 30th of June the ten prototypes can be experienced at Rue du Tunnel 7, in the future QWSTION Store which will officially open mid August. ECAL Digital Market In partnership with the 3D printing company Formlabs, ECAL Master Product Design students present a range of innovative everyday life objects, produced through a print farm within the exhibition and sold directly on site. Projects from ECAL faculty and alumni are also available. The concept was imagined by Camille Blin, head of the Master Product Design, and Christophe Guberan, ECAL tutor. ECAL has turned Spazio Orso 16, a 17th century Milanese palazzo, into a contemporary production site and retail shop inspired by a new vision of digital manufacturing. Lately, most of the product design research into 3D printing has been focusing on new technologies and the shapes they can generate. The idea of this project is to present digital manufacturing as an industrial production tool thanks to a print farm composed of numerous machines printing the same pieces simultaneously. “ECAL Digital Market” offers functional and well-designed everyday objects, created by Master Product Design students as well as by a selection of ECAL-related designers (faculty members and alumni). The project looks into the possibilities of production on demand. It examines the changing environment of manufacturing processes, it emphasizes how fast and transparent today s design industry could become, and experiments with new design details that are too intricate to achieve with traditional manufacturing techniques. Finally, “ECAL Digital Market” highlights the role of the designer in this new production cycle. Thanks to the 3D printers and know-how provided by Formlabs, a large variety of objects such as combs, tape dispensers, mechanical pencils, shoehorns, coat hooks, scissors, spinning tops, shelves and many more are produced and sold on site by the students. The digital files of the objects can also be purchased online: www.ecal-digital-market.ch In partnership with the 3D printing company Formlabs, ECAL Master Product Design students present a range of innovative everyday life objects, produced through a print farm within the exhibition and sold directly on site.
