Master Class with Pierre Bismuth

Master Class with Pierre Bismuth Pierre Bismuth a présenté à l ECAL son premier long métrage en tant que réalisateur Where is Rocky II ? Where is Rocky II ?

Workshop in Berlin Project
Workshop in Berlin

Workshop in Berlin To celebrate the launch of a new master s degree in photography at ECAL in 2016, the first year students worked together with Taiyo Onorato and Milo Keller (Head of Photography at ECAL) in Berlin for one week to produce a book about the city s architecture in turmoil. Using the wide streets of Berlin as a blank canvas, the students were encouraged to interpret rather than document the spaces of the vast metropolis and build their own story of its distinctive character. The picturesdepict the shift that Berlin has undergone in the past, from the perspective of unexpected encounters, vacant spaces, countless construction sites and shared revelations. The book was printed and bound at Helmut Newton Foundation during the C/O Berlin Book Days, 29.9 – 2.10.2016. Participants: Johannes Bauer, Vilhelm Björndahl, Senta Simond, Nicolas Toulotte, Laura Zoccarato, Marc Asekhame, Calum Douglas, Bastien Gomez, Karla Hiraldo Voleau, Yuliya Khan, Stéphane Mocan, Eunwook Nam, Shin Young Park, Robert Swierczynski, Maria Tasula, Justinas Vilutis, Maria Grazia Grasso The book has been produced in collaboration with C/O Berlin for the Book Days 2016. Pyrite Project
Pyrite

Mirko Stanchieri – Pyrite Pyrite is a puzzle game available on a tablet. The goal is simple: the player must reach a target randomly positioned in space by building a path and this in a limited number of shots. The view is an isometric projection which makes in particularly complicated and singles it out. In addition, the player s levels and used paths freeze, creating new obstacles and increasing the game s complexity. This project and its minimal universe is a continuation of the aesthetics that I have experienced at ECAL since the beginning of my studies.

Collaboration with Mauviel 1830 Project
Collaboration with Mauviel 1830

Collaboration with Mauviel 1830 ECAL x MAUVIEL 1830 Creativity knows no boundaries and certainly not those of kitchens! The collaboration with Mauviel represents for ECAL and students of the Master in Advanced Studies in Design for Luxury & Craftsmanship an incredible opportunity to delve into the world of gastronomy. Through a project that began with a tour of the whole class at the factory in Normandy, which was followed by a meeting with the stared chef Yannick Alléno in Paris, students were able to discover a world where knowledge is synonymous with Excellency. Facilitate the work of chef, sublimate the tastes and products but also present the dishes straight from the fire were points that were ringside in the specifications. Mauviel s expertise in terms of transformation of material through specific techniques, but also knowledge of the specific needs of the chefs were also extremely useful elements to start this ambitious project. Accompanied by the designer Tomas Kral, students from around the world were able to explore many ways. A selection made under the expert eye of Mauviel then gave birth to a series of prototypes that are waiting to be tested. For the ECAL, this collaboration is again a discovery, a valuable exchange and for sure a wonderful tasting experience!

Hermann Eidenbenz Teaching Graphic Design Project
Hermann Eidenbenz Teaching Graphic Design

Hermann Eidenbenz Teaching Graphic Design Hermann Eidenbenz (1902–1992) was one of the first professionals in Switzerland to describe himself as a graphic designer. From the 1910s to the 1950s, he was involved in graphic design education in Zurich, Magdeburg, Basel and Brunswick, first as a student and later as a teacher. Starting from a broad research on historical type design education, the project culminated in the discovery of two consistent convolutes of didactic materials. A collection of glass plates documenting a lettering course in Magdeburg, Germany (1926–1932) and a set of student works reflecting a course in basic design exercises in Basel (1940–1943), both held by Eidenbenz as a teacher. Together with documents from private and public archives in Basel, Berlin, Brunswick, Magdeburg and Zürich, the outcome of the project sheds light on a significant chapter in Swiss graphic design, shortly before it became internationally known.Main applicantsECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne (project leader) Research team (researcher) (supervisor) (supervisor)Periodoctober 2014 – november 2016PartnersECAL/University of Art and Design LausanneDisseminationPublications Sarah Klein, Die Schriftklasse von Hermann Eidenbenz, in Maramm. On the occasion of the Milan International Furniture Fair 2016, the ECAL students of the Bachelor Media and Interaction Design present a collection of interactive experiments. Headlight & Rocking lamps welcome faces in a bath of light. Inside, a shining ball is guided along a monumental journey.Pump It Up & A connected bicycle pump allows you to interact in a virtual scene. Through this, users influence how balloons are inflated.Look Book & These books keep their pages tightly closed. The binding gives you a glimpse of an unexpected content.Broom Broom & Brooms designed to be handled from a particular angle. Controlling them unveils a universe of staggering proportions.Scalastic & A scale alters the content of an image according to the user s weight. The objects thus represented stretch and twist to reach an elasticity defying all the laws of physics.Eye Drop & Opaque bottles filled with a fleeting digital fluid. Looking through the bottleneck, you can see the magical nature of their content.Tabula Rasa & A table designed for a special “tête-à-tête”. Through the table top one perceives a dramatic drop.Catapulse & A toaster becomes a launching pad for all sorts of objects. Its virtual environment provides a laboratory where experiments combine surprise and contemplation.Melting Hot & This hairdryer stretches beyond its own physical limits. By going up to a high virtual temperature, any object placed in front of the hairdryer instantly begins to change.Metronomy & A metronome controls the pace of a table tennis match. By setting the rhythm, the user can influence the speed of the game.Bloom Vases without flowers, to be viewed from below. Through the gaps, you catch a glimpse of a marvellous vegetal world with unknown species.Browse Air & A fan turns the pages of a book by the force of its blow. PUNKT. Project
PUNKT.

PUNKT. We are more dependent than ever on electronic devices. There s the fancy phone, watch or tablet, constantly vibrating and begging for attention; but let s not forget the simple tools of everyday life. Those basic objects that help in your daily routines: waking up in the morning, connecting the power plug, or talking to someone with a good old-fashioned landline. How can we make these better, more intuitive, or get rid of any unnecessary functions and simplify both their use and formal language? Thilo Alex Brunner, head of the Master Product Design programme, provides some possible answers to theses questions: “To cooperate with both Petter Neby (Punkt founder/president) and the Jasper Morrison Office for Design (Punkt. art director) means a great deal for us, since we share many ‘Swiss design values such as efficiency and simplicity – but always with an element of surprise.” Under the guidance of designer Augustin Scott de Martinville, the students product ideas are diverse and range from weather stations to wall printers, and torches to projectors. «When Objects Dream» exhibition in Milan,12–17.04.2016,Spazio Orso 16, Milan Do objects sometimes dream about themselves? What if we could enter their dreams? Virtual reality? Connected objects? On the occasion of the Milan International Furniture Fair 2016, from 12th to 17th April at the Spazio Orso 16, ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne presents a collection of interactive experiments developed by Bachelor Media and Interaction Design students. HD Images Brochure with explanations Video Ever since they appeared, we have been worshipping the objects around us while being extremely demanding of them. What if the roles were reversed for once? Instead of asking objects to make us dream, why don t we consider their own dreams? Premonitory dreams that anticipate a possible future of objects? In this exhibition presented by the Bachelor Media & Interaction Design students of ECAL, a series of objects offers visitors a rather unsettling experience. In order to uncover its subtleties they will have to learn to adjust to the objects on display so as to perceive each piece s personality. In a certain way, this project as a whole leads us to question the future of familiar objects. How does our relationship to them changes as they become capable of making a statement about their own existence, interact by using onboard sensors and grow increasingly connected to our communication networks? Do I see my toothbrush differently knowing that it records each movement in my mouth and therefore displays a form of consciousness? As part of the experiments developed for this exhibition, the students created two families of objects. The first integrates a virtual reality principle which allows you to literally look inside the objects, to immerse yourself for a time into a parallel reality which objects let you glimpse at. The second is made up of objects whose basic function is augmented or transformed through activity sensors. This is their way of making us reflect on the future of so-called smart or connected objects. The objects on display, whose function is but fiction, tell their own story, encouraging us to see and use them differently. In a playful manner, they lead us to rethink some of our distrust in the face of change and as regards, their future. Collaboration with Reuge – 2016 Project
Collaboration with Reuge – 2016

Collaboration with Reuge – 2016 On the occasion of Baselworld from 17th to 24 March 2016, ECAL and Reuge present four music boxes realised by students of the MAS Design for Luxury & Craftsmanship. MEDITATION Clément Beaugé This project is a new interpretation of what a music box can do. Inspired by the idea of using your senses, this is a piece that you can enjoy visually, you can feel, you can smell and of course, you can listen to. The magical music, the candle sent with its delicate light will transport you into world of relaxation. It won t be long before your new music box becomes your favorite ritual for relaxing at home. This music box is simple and elegantwith a pleasant surprise, the mechanical movement makes the candle turn. The candle platform isdirectly attached to the spring-housing, so when the movement starts you can see the candle turn around the music box. Approximately 8 to 9 turns when the movement is fully charged. HARMONY Einat Kirschner This music box is inspired by contemporary design. At first glance the music box appears to be a modern speaker or portable radio. This look allows the piece to easily fit the modern style that speaks to a younger audience while still enjoying the soothing traditional sound of a music box. The design was created using the traditional music box materials but with a new interpretation of the design. The key, which becomes a main element in the design, takes its shape from the modern collection of Reuge music boxes and the volume button of radios and speakers. This music box can be both hung on a wall or stationed on a table. With this new design we give you the possibility of having a unique music box that can be very easily moved from your living to your bedroom or the bathroom, ... The perforated pattern on the box allows the music to come through and highlights the key that turns slowly while the music is playing. DISCOVER Jungyou Choi A surprising piece that opens in an original way. Often our music boxes are closed and the movement inside isn t easily seen or, sometimes its not even possible to see the movement at all! With this original opening concept we wanted to show more of the beautiful movement and allow the costumer to have a playful music box. There are two metal pieces that cover the movement and protect it. These covers slide in one direction from the front to the back or in the opposite direction. Just slide the first or second cover or both and discover a beautiful golden-colored 36 note musical movement. The graphics on the first cover, made with holes, allows you to see the second cover and creates a dynamic object with an overlay of colours and materials. ALPHORN Pauline Masson Limited edition of 10 pieces signed by the Swiss craftsman. What could be more natural then for a Swiss company with over 150 years of experience to be inspired by an iconic Swiss instrument, the Alphorn. This music boxis a reinterpretation of the traditional Alphorn which is a symbolic object of Switzerland and the Swiss craftsmanship. The box is made from a very rare wood, the exceptional resonance spruce. This wood which is over 200 years old is the fundamental type of wood chosen by stringed instrument makers. It combines lightness, ensuring an excellent response to vibrations, with rigidity and tonicity guaranteeing substantial mechanical resistance. It originates from the Risoud Forest, (located right next to our factory) one of the largest and oldest in Europe. Even in the age of Stradivarius, specialists sourced tone wood from this forest which, thanks to its poor soil and its harsh climate, produces wood of exceptional quality. Be surprised by the amazing sound of this special music box, made by the magical alliance of this unique wood and our mechanical musical movement.

Exhibition "1020 Renens"

Exhibition "1020 Renens" 1020 Renens Exhibition photo 03 mars – 23 mars 2016 Place du Marché, Renens It s all a question of time. A photograph is shot in a fraction of a second, in one instant. A city changes, it transforms; and to be defined into a new image, it could take years, decades or centuries. During one year, the photographer Nicolas Faure has worked together with the 15 students of the 3rd year photography class at ECAL in Renens. They explored various themes such as the documentary of an African community or the life of teenagers in schools or at the pool as well as the every day life at the office or the intimacy of retired people. The images, assembled in a book as a tribute to Nicolas Faure, are pieces of reality that are sometimes raw and sometimes reworked. They let our mind travel around even when we are still here, in Switzerland, in Renens. 1020 RenensExhibition photo03 mars – 23 mars 2016Place du Marché, RenensIt s all a question of time. Inter-Face Following a one week collaborative workshop between ECAL s 2ndyear Industrial Design students and Hongik University s Product and Space Design students, where in mixed teams, they worked on a range of MASKS to cover, disguise, embellish, cloak, protect, decorate or enhance people. Through this project, they shared and discovered their mutual cultures and habits. The outcome is a series of colourful and surprising masks reinterpreting this ancestral object, materialised with textiles and know-how harvested in the maze of Seoul s enormous Dongdaemun market. The Embarrassment Show Project
The Embarrassment Show

The Embarrassment Show After ECAL in June 2015 and Unseen Photo Fair Amsterdam in September 2015, ECAL Bachelor Photography students present "The Embarrassment Show", an exhibition curated by Erik Kessels, cofounder & creative director of KesselsKramer (Amsterdam), at the  NRW-Forum Düsseldorf  from 20 November to 10 January. --------- The Embarrassment Show A workshop and exhibition curated by Erik Kessels cofounder & creative director KesselsKramer (Amsterdam), with Bachelor Photography students. “Embarrassment is important. If you re not willing to humiliate yourself, make mistakes and downright fuck up, you should consider working in a cubicle farm. It s safer there. Because as a creative person, you ll be called an idiot at least once a day. That s okay. Making mistakes and risking embarrassment, even failure, is how you make progress. Without it, you ll be stuck in the same old safe zone: not embarrassed, but not better either. In other words: boring. So if we want to do this thing we love – making stuff – we mustn t be afraid of looking stupid. In this workshop and exhibition I stretched the abilities of 2nd year ECAL Bachelor Photography students to the limit. By embarrassing themselves they are able to tell a personal, often awkward and risky story. This gives them an opportunity to explore an area of photography which they would probably not have dared to touch.”  Erik Kessels

Signage of the kindergarten and UAPE Prangins Event
Signage of the kindergarten and UAPE Prangins

Interactive scarves Project
Interactive scarves

Interactive scarves When you match the prints of prints with a famous school of art and design, the result can only be explosive! Emilio Pucci pairs with the Ecole Cantonal d Art de Lausanne (ECAL) for a collaboration born at Granaiolo, the brand s archive and talent center nearby Florence. During a three-day workshop led by Vincent Jacquier, a selection of students and assistants from the school s Visual Communication Department had the opportunity to explore and reinterpret signature prints. Interactive Scarves is the first of a series of surprising projects originated from their endeavors and achievements during the workshop. The designer Pauline Saglio has developed a three-pieced installation that proposes an innovative and poetic way to discover a scarf. The colors, shapes and compositions of each Emilio Pucci print are enhanced by light and sound to alter the perception of the iconic object, offering visitors a magical experience that stimulates all of the senses.

Rec All Project
Rec All

Romain Cazier – Rec All This project is a personal interpretation of the geometrical puzzle game, widely popular on mobile. Taking some of this genre s features, I also wanted to stand out and propose a singular universe, where strange creatures with a cyclic behaviour are generated from a simple gesture. It is composed of two parts: an “arcade” mode with different levels the player must resolve, and a “sandbox” mode where he can generate creatures at will. Rec All is the continuation of playful and technical experimentations I initiated at ECAL.

Diplomas – 2015 Jérôme Wilfredo Baccaglio ,  Logos for Drones and Such... I created a catalogue for drone logos. It gathers a heterogenous iconography (invented, drawn, found) whose every motif is available for purchase as a canvas, a tattoo, a drawing or a sticker. This is an oblique strategy adopted to talk about the interpretation of an image (as the spectator, or as the artist, to assign it a meaning, a name); the versus created by hand-made work and a digital image; mercantilism; the matter of copyright and its role in an information-infested era. Tina Braegger,   Fasanenstrasse 30 I made an architectural model of white cardboard, placed on four white metal legs. I decorated the model with white curtains that flow over the model down to the floor. Inside the model, I put old toys of mine, objects that originally belong to a doll s house. By attaching the legs directly to the model, it looks like a table. I wanted to create something surreal, like a dream; the objects inside the model are slightly too big, and the model bleeds off as the curtains overflow. Appartement 50 Cité Radieuse

Appartement 50 Cité Radieuse Apartment 50 was restored by two enthusiasts, Jean-Marc Drut and Patrick Blauwart, as close as possible to its original condition. Listed as a historical monument, the venue occasionally hosts exhibition projects. World-renowned designers have already exhibited there, such as Jasper Morrison, Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec, Konstantin Grcic and Pierre Charpin. Thus, under the direction of Thilo Alex Brunner, head  of the Master Product Design at ECAL, and of ECAL professor Augustin Scott de Martinville, a series of objects was produced over one semester by the Product Design Master students. The project began in September 2014 with a three-day workshop in the Cité Radieuse, allowing students to experience life in the building. Based on their various observations, they created objects to “inhabit” Apartment 50, focusing particularly on the following features: The specific climate of the apartments: the fan creates an air flow on the mezzanine and the cushions are designed to fit both on the living room s indoor parapets and on the loggias tables. The flexibility of interior spaces: the large rotating lamp serves to light either the dining room or the living room in turn, while the small model can be used either on a desk or a bedside table. Tours of Apartment 50 which take place regularly: the carpet, crafted with the support of the Ruckstuhl AG manufacture in Langenthal, displays a map showing how the Cité Radieuse blended in with its environment at the time of construction, while the “unit” metre provides a simple tool to explain the Modulor system. Life in the communal areas, especially the roof terrace which serves as a meeting place: the chair and folding table are designed to facilitate migration from the living room of the apartment, while the  picnic box allows to comfortably carry everything you for an aperitif. In addition to the projects around the above-mentioned specificities, half a dozen other objects can be discovered on the spot or in the related publication. In March 2015, the students of the ECAL Master Art Direction were invited to attend a four-day workshop to experience and document everyday life in the building with a view to editing a publication. Through the architectural spectrum across 52 pages, this editorial project includes portraits of residents or fictional characters inspired by the Modulor system, as well as still lifes and original typefaces echoing the building s proportions. Apartment 50 was restored by two enthusiasts, Jean-Marc Drut and Patrick Blauwart, as close as possible to its original condition.
