Beyond Bézier. Explorations of drawing methods in type design In the early age of digital type, several methods were explored to draw letterforms. One of them, the Bézier spline, an algorithm that generates curves with a small quantity of data, has the crucial advantage of sparing computer memory and processing resources. It is today the industry standard. This project aims to question and reevaluate it, to move beyond established trends, to develop innovative ideas by exploring alternative methods of drawing curves, and letterforms. Beyond Bézier is an investigation of the existing approaches to letter drawing. It is also the experimentation of new methods to draw and to create. As type designers and type educators, we have felt the past few years the dead-ends that vector drawing and contemporary software brings, generating more and more fonts that just look the same. By researching and experimenting with different approaches of drawing, our design pedagogy will be nourished by this experience and shared with a larger audience through a dedicated website. If the vector is the current frontier of type design, new perspectives will be opened if we overcome that frontier. According to the Israeli-American psychologist and Nobel Laureate Daniel Kahneman, thinking operates within two systems: ‘System 1 operates automatically and quickly, with little or no effort and no sense of voluntary control. System 2 allocates attention to the effortful mental activities that demand it, including complex computations. The operations of System 2 are often associated with the subjective experience of agency, choice, and concentration. 1 One could argue that designers are working within System 1, whereas good designers make a larger use of System 2. Fighting automatism is indeed an important aspect of creativity. When one works solely with vectors, only one System is at work. Drawing with different approaches can trigger new ideas and shapes, such as the physical limitations of your tools bring new forms.2 When vector drawing becomes automatic (by muscular memory of the designer, or software-induced choices), a whole area of creativity disappears. It may also be that the ability of switching between two systems improves creativity. This is comparable to Jean-François Billeter s hypothesis about how creativity functions: he compares it to a gear change when driving a car. The moment when tension is released between two different operating regimes is the moment of revelation, of creation.3 Another and very important aspect is the collaborative approach. Type design has long been – and still is – seen as a solitary practice, with the designers in their ivory tower. The approach of Beyond Bézier is collaborative. It shares materials and approaches. Beyond Bézier is a project that can nourish designers, design students, and those interested in the way humans can create. It opens the door to further development, such as a digital tool – software based neither on vectors, bitmaps, or parametric systems. The group works simultaneously on five different axes which map different methodologies of drawing type. Each researcher is in charge of coordinating an axis while contributing to other axes simultaneously. The five axes are: 1 The Stroke 2 The Surface 3 The Collective 4 The Robot 5 The Mathematics Axes 1 and 2 are questioning traditional ways of creating fonts, mostly looking at the tools and instruments used for the creation. 3 and 4 are rather looking at who designs, in which contexts, through collaboration and exchange. Axis 5 is transversal. References 1. KAHNEMAN 2011, Daniel Kahneman, Thinking, Fast and Slow, Farrar, Straus and Giroux, New York, 2011. 2. The Manufacture of Type for Typewriters in Switzerland Between the 1940s and the 1990s, three companies manufactured type components for typewriters in Switzerland: Caractères SA, Setag and Novatype. During more than fifty years, they supplied the biggest manufacturers of office machines in Europe and around the world, such as IBM, Remington, Olivetti, Paillard-Hermès or Triumph-Adler. Having held a leading position worldwide, the three manufacturers played a key role in the design, development, and production of type components and typefaces for typewriters, as well as for all kinds of impact printers. By looking in details at their production methods, the research observes what influence did the manufacturing processes and the mechanical characteristics of the typewriter have on the design of the typefaces. Additionally, it takes interest into the surprising role played by the criminal police. Specialized in the dating and identification of typewriter typefaces for judicial and criminal purposes, forensic experts developed over the years specific methods and compiled rich documentations on typewriter typefaces. Being in direct contact with the type manufacturers to gain first-hand information, they even interfered in the design of some lettershapes. Based on oral history and archival research, this project aims to shed light on this little-known part of the industrial and typographic history.Main applicantSophie Wietlisbach, researcherResearch teamDavide Fornari, scientific supervisor Roland Früh, scientific supervisorPeriod01.01.2023–31.12.2024Supported byECAL / University of Art and Design, internal research grant DNP Foundation for Cultural Promotion, DNP Graphic Culture Research Grant

Vietnamese objects: The material culture of resilience in the face of (de)colonisation Cà phê (coffee), atisô (artichoke), xi nê ma (cinema), căng tin (canteen) or xi-măng (cement): in the Vietnamese language, many words bear the imprint of a French origin. And what if the same were true of everyday objects? Somewhere between cultural anthropology, the epistemology of Vietnamese design and the sociology of objects, this research project analyses the production of objects in Vietnam in the light of French colonisation and decolonisation. Through reportage, interviews and research carried out in various archive collections, this book sets out to reveal the mechanisms by which objects, foods, materials and know-how have been integrated into Vietnam until today they can boast authentically Vietnamese characteristics. Like an archive of the present day, through the prism of design and the applied arts, the authors take a decolonial and critical look at the creativity and adaptability of a country that has succeeded in appropriating the techniques of a dominant power.Main applicantQuang Vinh Nguyen Émilie LaystaryResearch teamQuang Vinh Nguyen Émilie Laystary Cynthia Mai Amman Chi-Long TrieuPeriodJuly 2022 – April 2024Supported byECAL/University of art and design Lausanne Réserve stratégique de la HES-SO (RCDAV)ContributionsEric Panthou Kai Nguyễn Lưu Chữ (Quoc Huy Le, Đức Cao) Mắt Bét Nhat Thanh Le Tien Dat Vu Thai Ha Vu Trong Đặt Nguyễn Quoc Huy Le Vincent Yuen Ruiz Xuân-Hạ Vu

Realtime Narratives 2024 During the Realtime Narratives course, second-year students had to create a real-time narrative experience using Unreal Engine software. The aim of the project was to raise students awareness of the use of 3D realtime engines and the various links with other software specific to each stage of development. Firefly This project explores an alternate reality where human dominance and omnipresence over the natural world have given way to a new balance—a harmonious coexistence between technology and nature. As the player journeys through this mysterious landscape, they absorb the atmosphere and search for answers. Where have the humans gone? Where do all these fireflies come from? This journey invites reflection on the increasingly blurred boundary between nature and technology. Does this distinction still make sense in a world where humans have delegated so many of their abilities, tasks, and even dreams to machines? Through the lens of this world, the project questions our tendency to offload responsibilities onto technology—both as a tool for emancipation and as a potential trap leading to our own obsolescence. By portraying a world where humanity seems to have reached the peak of its aspirations for technological delegation, it urges us to consider whether the path we are currently on will lead to our fulfillment or if we are heading toward a reality where our very essence might be called into question. Par Updated This interactive experience questions our relationship with technological obsolescence. Through the lens of emerging technologies and their relentless evolution, we constantly seek ways to maximize hardware and software capabilities, driving our devices to undergo an increasing number of updates. With each update, individuals face the necessity of these upgrades, the reality of planned obsolescence, and the fear of becoming technologically outdated. However, this process doesn t always go smoothly and can, ironically, also lead to the device s obsolescence. This project explores the stress and pressure experienced by those compelled to perform these updates, highlighting the tension between the desire to stay at the cutting edge of technology and the fear of being left behind. Par Dimmuborgir Dimmuborgir explores the convergence of various elements that collectively shape a legend. Set in a Nordic-inspired environment to evoke an eternal and mysterious atmosphere, the game presents three puzzles, each inspired by traditional video game mechanics, offering a distinct form of reflection. Solving these puzzles sequentially leads the player to create the myth. The first puzzle symbolizes deep contemplation, driven both by clarity of mind and the altered perspectives induced by psychoactive substances, opening the door to radically different thinking. The second puzzle delves into logic and investigation, requiring precise organization of discovered information into the correct locations and sequence. This fosters a more structured and logical thought process. The final puzzle concludes the quest by using the metaphor of the cave, representing the focused trajectory of thought once set in motion. It signifies the completion of the search, where every discovered element is restored to its rightful place, breathing life into the legend. Par Unlocked "Unlocked" is a video game-inspired experience that critiques societal norms within the education system. The main character is a girl who hasn t yet found her place in the world. She has pink skin and horns, symbolizing her alienation from her environment, and constantly wears a melancholic expression. As players explore the game, they encounter the gendered characteristics of schools, represented by color-coded lockers and a classroom scene symbolizing public scrutiny. The library highlights the pervasive culture of bullying, forcing players to confront societal pressures. The narrative deepens in a garden adorned with grotesque sculptures embodying beauty ideals. Players must destroy these symbols, exposing the school s attempts to conceal the influence such standards have on students. This game serves as a commentary on societal expectations, gender norms, and the subtle coercion present within educational institutions. Par

Anthracite The Anthracite project aims to raise public awareness about the dangers of light pollution, which threatens the survival of nocturnal insects and impacts biodiversity in Switzerland. Through a carefully crafted edition blending scientific outreach and photography, the project strikes a delicate balance between poetry and urgency. Anthracite also takes shape in two additional formats: a visual installation made up of striking images, and a teaser video. These mediums of awareness immerse the audience by adopting the perspective of an insect, inviting viewers to directly experience the effects of human-caused pollution. Ultimately, the project seeks to inspire greater protection for the vulnerable insects at risk.

BELLE RIVIERA X ECAL For the member municipalities of GEDERIVIERA, the waste management perimeter of the Vaudois Riviera, students in the BA Industrial Design are envisioning a new public trash can. GEDERIVIERA is the waste management authority for the Swiss Riviera. Its principal mission is to study and propose projects to harmonise waste management in the member municipalities. In 2021, GEDERIVIERA initiated the creation of a brand new public trash can in collaboration with ECAL to bring harmony and freshness to the streets of the Riviera.MODULA by Julie Meyer, Jade Eyman Modula is a waste bin with a flexible design. Its ingenious perforations allow various modules to be attached, such as an ashtray, a notice board, a container for doggy bags and a lid. These modules can be easily moved, added to or removed from the bin. In addition, several Modula bins can be connected to increase their capacity or facilitate selective sorting. This modular approach leaves plenty of space for creativity and new, innovative modular designs from the Riviera.Casquette par Aramis Rüdisühli, Léo Crespin The "Casquette" bin, as its name suggests, is a nod to the fashion accessory, and adds a touch of elegance to a rubbish bin. This gives it its own distinctive identity and visibility in the Riviera landscape. Casquette has been developed using simple production methods to minimise costs and simplify the manufacturing process.GYRE par Aleksandra Nazarova, Mattia Cook Gyre is an elegant and functional waste bin, thanks to its design with a double sided opening that gives it a discreet yet striking shape. Equipped with an easy-to-handle hoop, removable ashtrays and a 180° opening, the ergonomics of this litter bin have been designed to simplify its use by public service employees. The students pooled their creative skills to imagine a distinctive trash can that would exhibit character while meeting standards of functionality and quality. After several months of fruitful exchanges with GEDERIVIERA, ECAL presented three innovative trash can projects, boasting a harmonious design specially crafted to seamlessly integrate into public spaces and thus meet the expectations of citizens.

The Cultural Turn in Swiss Graphic Design from the 1980s to 2020 The research project investigates the discourse on graphic design in Switzerland in the under-researched period from 1980 to 2020. While the 1950s and 1960s saw graphic design in Switzerland reach international recognition and commercial expansion under the label “Swiss style”, a paradigm shift emerged in the following decades. The attention of many practitioners turned away from design as a pure service for the industrial and service sector and moved towards cultural commissions on a local, national and international level. Instead of aiming for maximum return, they chose their commissions according to whether they promised them creative freedom and whether they contributed to the profiling of their portfolio in alignment with their new definition of the profession as a lifestyle. This project examines the emergence and the development of this phenomenon, which became known as “cultural graphic design”, in professional graphic design in Switzerland. Main applicantProf. Dr Davide Fornari (ECAL/HES-SO) Prof. Robert Lzicar (Hochschule der Künste Bern HKB)Research teamDr Chiara Barbieri Dr Jonas Berthod Miriam KobanPeriod01.03.2023 – 28.02.2027Supported bySNSF Swiss National Science FoundationDisseminationWebsite cultural-turn-in-design.ch Conference For the Sake of Creative Freedom: Graphic Design for the Cultural Sector, 1 December 2023, HKB/Hochschule der Künste BernThe project identifies three stages in this cultural turn: the emergence of new values, followed by the development of a discourse on cultural design, and later its institutionalisation in federal policy. Accordingly, it is divided into three case studies bookended with symbolic socio-cultural, political and institutional turning points. The first case study starts with the 1980 riots, which took place in several Swiss cities. These socio-cultural upheavals were accompanied by an explosive increase in alternative cultural venues and outlets, which provided new working environments and fields of activity for visual designers. This case study focuses on the emergence of new professional values, summarised as “cultural graphic design”, and ends with the institutionalisation of alternative cultural centres at the end of the decade. The second case study explores the articulation and mediation of the discourse surrounding this practice. From the 1990s, designers created objects, organised exhibitions, wrote books and published articles promoting and negotiating their new position. This output contributed to the establishment of a discourse on “cultural graphic design” in Switzerland. The case study begins in 1993 with the publication of a polemic article that criticised the state of commercial Swiss graphic design while praising the arrival of a new generation of designer-authors active in culture. It ends in 2000 with the publication of two books that not only cemented the phenomenon of “cultural graphic design” in Switzerland but also made it known beyond its borders by promoting these new practices. Finally, the third case study analyses how “cultural design” transitioned from vanguard to mainstream. This period saw the canonisation of “cultural design”, which was adopted by an increasing number of graphic designers. It also witnessed a political institutionalisation, as evidenced in the reforms of federal design prizes such as the Most Beautiful Swiss Books in 1997 and the Swiss Design Awards in 2002. The case study ends with the period covered by the Kulturbotschaft 2016–2020, which defined the federal strategy for cultural policy and, for the first time, inscribed the support of design within the remit of action of the State. Drawing on recent findings, this project traces the development of design in Switzerland with a focus on transregional relations. The case studies share a common methodology of triangulating network analysis, oral history and the discourse analysis of visual and textual material to create comparative readings of the last decades developments in design and stimulate a discourse on its current status. As a whole, it sheds light on under-researched areas of design history while replacing them within the wider socio-cultural context.

Three ECAL graduates in artist residencies abroad Romane de Watteville, Gina Proenza and Baker Wardlaw, three ECAL graduates, have been awarded three Artist Residencies abroad by the Etat de Vaud The State of Vaud provides professional artists working in the canton with a studio in Paris and another in Berlin. Put out to tender each year, the artistic residencies are granted for a period of six months, and each comes with a contribution to expenses of 9,000 francs. For 2024, the Paris studio has been awarded to visual artists Romane de Watteville (1st semester) and Gina Proenza (2nd semester). The Berlin residency (2nd semester) goes to Baker Wardlaw. International artist residencies are an important means of supporting creativity and research. They encourage the development of projects with links to the two capitals concerned, and promote the influence of artists working in Vaud. To this end, the Canton of Vaud has a studio at the Cité internationale des arts in Paris, and (in collaboration with the Canton of Freiburg) a studio in the multicultural Wedding district in the heart of Berlin. Residence in Paris 1st semester 2024 - Graduated with a Bachelor s degree in Fine Arts in 2020, Romane de Watteville wishes to reside in the French capital to develop a pictorial project entitled "Picture of You Staring". Focusing on formal issues, this work is centered around the theme of set design in both theater and film, as well as costume design. The residency will foster exchange and close collaboration with other artists working in textiles, ceramics and installation. 2nd semester 2024 - During her stay in Paris, Gina Proenza, graduated with a Bachelor s degree in Fine Arts in 2017, will develop a project linked to the writings and documentary films (one of which is unfinished) produced by French poet Alain Gheerbrant following his travels in the Colombian Amazon during the second half of the 20th century. The artist plans to consult the archives of these journeys held at the Bibliothèque Nationale de France (BNF) to observe the relationship between colonial history and anthropology. Residence in Berlin 2nd semester 2024 - During his stay in Berlin, Baker Wardlaw, graduated with a Bachelor s degree in Fine Arts in 2014, will continue the conceptual and formal exploration of his work entitled "Berlin Key / Sacred Harp". Centered on the notions of cryptography and cooperation, the artist s approach aims to establish a parallel, or even a confrontation, between the messages sometimes cryptically conveyed by works of art and the complex digital encasement to which all human communication is almost necessarily subject these days. www.vd.ch

THEY – ECAL x LE CONSORTIUM,27.10.2023–31.03.2024,Dijon The Consortium Museum and ECAL present THEY, the culmination of the research project "The Raving Age. Histories and Figures of Youth" by the Master of Visual Arts. THEY, is not about us. It is the statement of a shortfall, a gap... Given this external perspective, how can we express the condition and creativity of a virtualized collective body? How can we get around the deadlocks of traditional differences, innocence, and primary inventiveness? The THEY exhibition seeks to create a diffracted image of youth – a community without community, thriving in a dissolved, uncertain world where referents move freely, unburdened by hierarchies, and transcending generational and gender constraints. The exhibition delves into the emergence of languages and forms, exploring how the foundations of a lexicon are established, and how a new way of making art, of being “contemporary” comes about. These contemporary perspectives presume acts of ownership, disappearance, ventriloquism, and the emergence of many social, interpersonal, political, and esthetic practices and experiments – always in action and opposing the inertia of walls. THEY thus establishes human maps, a sort of moral fable home to all kinds of affects and relationships of identification and indifference – forms of disappearance, a spectral base which leads us, in a certain way, into these worlds where virtuality reigns. It is a temporary refuge for “wild young people”: dissidents of systems and borders, creators of shapes, bodies, vehicles, and multiplicities, who want life, and not capital, to breed. THEY, is not about us. It is the statement of a shortfall, a gap. Given this external perspective, how can we express the condition and creativity of a virtualized collective body? How can we get around the deadlocks of traditional differences, innocence, and primary inventiveness? Can it be achieved by not doing sociology against a backdrop of existential and esthetic crisis? By freeing ourselves from a senile passion for whatever moves, lives, and rebels? How can we conceive of this transitional creature, unable to solidify in its unfinished forms, and instead very much ready to give in, so to speak, to its own unspecialized and powerful youth, turning away from any destiny and specific environment, and holding on to nothing else but its own immaturity and ignorance? The THEY exhibition is the final chapter of the research project titled “The Raving Age. Histoires et figures de la jeunesse”, directed by Vincent Normand, Philippe Azoury and Shirin Yousefi. This project is an integral part of ECAL s Master s degree in Visual Arts.1 Developed over a two-year period, the program is based on various cross-disciplinary activities including production, analysis and workshops, with many artists, thinkers, writers and students taking part in it. The platform at www.theravingage.com archives a list of all exchanges and conferences in that context. The exhibition mirrors a unique collaborative experience between a museum and an art school. Invited artists and students worked closely together during the various stages of the exhibition process, such as design and communication (Lorenzo Benzoni and Luca Frati), scenographic design with David Douard, a reality TV show directed by Sara Sadik, and even a performative piece by Gabriele Garavaglia. Some of the exhibited pieces were created specifically for this particular occasion, such as those by Julien Ceccaldi, Nicolas Ceccaldi, Mélanie Matranga, Gabriele Garavaglia, Exotourisme (Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster & Perez) and Jill Mulleady. Additional existing works were chosen for their specific resonance with the project. These include pieces by David Douard, Morag Keil, Caroline Poggi & Jonathan Vinel and David Wojnarowicz, a truly influential and dreaded figure of youth. Archive as a Creative Act: The Absolute Cinema of Gregory J. Markopoulos and the Temenos Utopia Artists who produce archives from their own work approach archival activity as a creative gesture: here, the archive literally becomes a work of art. In parallel with the “archival impulse” that has run through contemporary art since the 1960s, this research project examines the “performative agency” of archives when they are constituted from “image acts”. The selected corpus is based on an extremely singular case, the cinematographic work of Gregory J. Markopoulos (1928-1992) and the Temenos archives. Conceived in the 1970s and built up since the 1980s, this archive brings together the filmic, critical and theoretical productions of the Greek-American experimental filmmaker, as well as everything relating to the films of his companion Robert Beavers. Temenos is at once an archive, a festival dedicated to Gregory J. Markopoulos s last film cycle, Eniaios (1948-1990, approximately 80 hours), which has been held every four years since 2004, and a utopian project: "film as film", or a total work responding to a filmic absolute. This work-archive is explored through two main axes: an exhibition and a series of publications. At a time when the exhibition of moving images is becoming more widespread, the challenge is to look back at a series of films shot by one artist on film, and to present them in their concrete form in an exhibition space. Looped 16mm projections or linear projections following a fixed schedule will be confronted with enlargements of photograms and archival documents, all closely linked to films by Gregory J. Markopoulos that predate Eniaios but are included in this cycle. This cycle radicalises the notion of archive-creation: the earlier films are reedited, modified and accompanied by footage shot for the occasion, in a new project that erases the previous films. The richly illustrated exhibition catalogue will document the work, but will also include a series of theoretical contributions on the relationship between art and the archive, based on the case of the Temenos. In addition, two other works will be published: the correspondence between Gregory J. Markopoulos and Stan Brakhage, with a critical apparatus, which provides a close-up view of the processes of creation and self-organisation of American experimental cinema in the 1960s and 1970s; and a monograph on the cinema of Gregory J. Markopoulos, which to date remains little documented.Main applicantFrançois BovierResearch teamSerge Margel, senior researcher Lecturers and researchers: Philippe Artières, Erika Balsom, Robert Beavers, Christa Blümlinger, Enrico Camporesi, Markus Klammer, Rebekah Ruttkof, P. A Third Hand – Creative Applications for Robotics Robotic arms have long been a common sight in many industries. They are currently making a rapid entry into art and design studios and practices. Yet, at the same time, difficulties remain in accessing the workflows and work methods demanded by these machines given a clear lack of reference resources suited for this community. The same applies to Art and Design schools, which are increasingly investing in this type of equipment, often without having the resources to run it. This research project uses applied case studies to explore and define a set of exemplary work methods, capable of both informing and inspiring future users. In the field of automated manufacturing and industrial robots, the term used to highlight the concept of total automation is that of lights-out manufacturing, namely factories potentially capable of running with the lights off, without any on-site human presence required. This project adopts a virtually antithetical approach, casting the spotlight on the robotic arm and its many possibilities, and outlining the new opportunities for collaboration that these machines can offer designers, artists and creators at large. It does not adopt the perspective of production nor that of optimisation, but focusses more on experimentation, inspiration and collaboration. Robotic arms have expanded beyond their traditional industrial applications, presenting creators with opportunities to explore innovative production methods and new forms of expression. A rising generation of designers, artists, and architects is repurposing machines, originally designed for different tasks, for creative purposes. These machines are now being employed in collaborative and alternative ways, offering novel possibilities. However, embracing robotics in creative endeavors still involves a steep learning curve and significant financial investments. Over the past two decades, some production machines initially meant for industrial use have become accessible to designers, architects, and artists. Examples include 3D printers, laser cutters, and CNC milling machines. These tools, while initially intended for production, have found new life in the realms of creation and experimentation. They are now widely accessible in art and design school, fablabs or art and design studios. In this landscape, industrial robotic arms, especially their collaborative versions, have emerged as valuable tools for creativity. However, there is still a lack of reliable reference resources suited for this community. The project Creative Applications for Robotics aims to address this problem by offering access to best practices and case studies that can be used to further learning, stimulate ideas and foster the integration of collaborative robots into creative practices. The project therefore focuses on the use and interaction with this type of robot in a creative environment. Our goal is to produce a guide accompanied by a set of resources and relevant case studies. Advances in robotics are traditionally considered to belong to the realm of engineering and computer science, yet there is growing evidence that designers and artists have much to contribute to innovation in this area. Consequently, our research question addresses real needs insofar as inspiring case studies and specific resources can greatly further the inclusion of these new tools in art and design curricula and prove a useful addition to the multidisciplinary skills of tomorrow s creators.Main applicantAlain Bellet, associate professor HES Research teamResearchers Andrea Anner (AATB) Alain Bellet Thibault Brevet (AATB) Martin Hertig Guest lecturers / Guest designers and artists Jussi Ängeslevä Mar Canet (Varvara & Mar) Varvara Guljajeva (Varvara & Mar) Niklas Hagemann Taiyo Onorato Raphaël Pluvinage (Pinaffo – Pluvinage) Marion Pinaffo (Pinaffo – Pluvinage)DurationFebruary 2022 – October 2023Supported byECAL/École cantonale d art de Lausanne Réserve stratégique de la HES-SO (RCDAV)PartnersAATB – Practice for non-industrial roboticsStudents“Production Line” Workshop, May 2023 BA1 Media & Interaction Design & BA1 Industrial Design Abla Bolassi Owoussi, Alexander Bryant Paynter, Alexandre Li, Alexine Sierro, Alice Graff, Aryana Noorani, Aurélien Clerc, Baptiste Godart, Charlotte Jobin, Charlotte Waridel, Elena Biasi, Emilie Maier, Eva Reymond, Fernandez Oriana Gonzalez, Flavia Renaud, François Ader, Gaia Vitali, Isaure Nicolet, Jean-Elie Matile, Jeremy Loup, Joab Schneiter, Julie Tena, Lélie Guiochet, Livia Schmid, Mael Sandoz, Maëlle Rotten, Mathias Liniger, Matteo De Carlo, Matthieu Rigelo, Mehdin Talovic, Melchior Myard, Noah Stanley, Olivia Capol, Quentin Kohler, Salla Vallotton, Sasha Iatsenia, Thomas Gaudin, Titouan Longatte, Valère Zen-Ruffinen

The Raving Age. Histories and figures of youth This research project questions what has come of youth – a conceptual, aesthetic, and political figure that was born with modernity – in the visual arts, popular culture, and the humanities. Conversely, the project addresses what the problematic category of “youth” has brought about in contemporary art and thought. If youth is a classic object for anthropological, sociological, or historiographical studies, the contemporary grasp of its aesthetic and political contours has proven to be a much more difficult task. Indeed, it is seen as an ill-defined object, constantly shifting, difficult to dissociate from the historical background against which it arises – to such an extent that, by being so much a part of the present in its most atmospheric dimension, youth seems to become its image, its most exhaustive yet also most fleeting portrait, meant to be renewed at each moment of history. It is at this precise point that this research project seeks to grasp its logic, not only to describe youth, but to use it as its very method. This project does not intend to reproduce the categories that sociological or anthropological studies of youth have constructed, nor to reiterate the clichés that cultural industries have projected onto it, but to make the inextricable nature of the aesthetic and political dimensions of youth perceptible and intelligible. By exploring the processes by which youth is constituted through its forms of representation, this project seeks to grasp it as an allegory that will help rethink the “contemporary” through its most lively milieu.Main applicantVincent NormandResearch teamVincent Normand Philippe Azoury Stéphanie Moisdon Lecturers and researchers Julie Ackermann, Mohammed Almusibli, Ludivine Bantigny, Eric Baudelaire, Persis Bekkering, Federico Campagna, David Douard, Florian Gaité, Agnès Gayraud, Tristan Garcia, Guillaume Heuguet, Ingrid Luquet-Gad, Julia Marchand, Caroline Poggi, Simon Reynolds, Gisèle Vienne, Jonathan VinelDurationSeptember 2021 – September 2023Supported byECAL/École cantonale d art de Lausanne Réserve stratégique de la HES-SO (RCDAV)PartnerLe Consortium (Dijon, France)AssistantShirin Yousefi

Julie Richoz receives one of the Grands Prix de la Création de la Ville de Paris 2023 Congratulations to designer Julie Richoz, ECAL graduate and winner of the Grands Prix de la Création de la Ville de Paris 2023. For 30 years, the City of Paris has renewed its commitment to the creative professions each year. In 2023, the Grands Prix de la Création de la Ville de Paris will reward 7 winners: 3 Grands Prix, 3 Emerging Talents and 1 Fashion Accessories Prize. The Grand Prix rewards a professional for the quality of his or her project and career path, development strategy, commitment to the transmission of know-how or innovation. This prize is aimed at experienced professionals, companies and brands whose development is well advanced. A 2012 graduate of a Bachelor Industrial Design from ECAL, worked with designer Pierre Charpin from 2013 to 2015. Winner of the Grand Prix du Jury at the Villa Noailles Design Parade in 2012, which enabled her to work with CIRVA (Centre international de recherche sur le verre et les arts plastiques), published by Galerie Kreo, she says she entered design practice with one-off pieces or small series. " However, I put a lot of energy into developing industrial projects, which then become accessible to a larger number of people. It s a different, more complex approach, where everything can come undone for a detail. That s why, when I saw the letter of intent from Inga Sempé, the President of the Jury, I wanted to present my work to her. She explained that she wanted to showcase singular but also industrial objects. (...) This proves that just because you work in series doesn t mean you can t be bold in language and form." says the designer, who set up her studio in 2012. julierichoz.com bdmma.paris

Hermès Window display in Zürich The Astonishing Moment of Life Inspired by the Surrealist movement and the desire to find magic and wonder in the familiar and everyday life, this project features shapes and emblematic Hermès accessories that interact to form two subtly choreographed installations. These two window displays, imagined by Greek designer Charitini Gkritzali, a student in the Master of Advanced Studies in Design for Luxury and Craftsmanship at ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne, are an interpretation of Hermès 2023 annual theme, “Astonishment”, offering a moment that oscillates between reality and dreams.

Collector During the visual identity course with Adeline Mollard, the students had to develop an identity project promoting a collection chosen by them. Each project includes the design of a catalogue contextualising and presenting the collection, together with the design of a triptych of posters. Pas de publicité, merci "Pas de publicité, merci." This collection brings together a variety of unwanted newspapers, flyers and advertisements found daily in letterboxes near Lausanne. With no addressees, these advertisements lose their original usefulness. The aim was to create a new dialogue by recontextualizing and glorifying these images. By Alfredo VentiThink different tick different "Think different tick different" is a collection of Swatch watches. Reflecting the passion of a young collector, it also recounts the brand s lively, colorful aesthetic of the 90s. It attempts to retranscribe as closely as possible the sensation that we can experience in the cinema when a character plunges his gaze into ours, while preserving the notion of movement. This compilation highlights the design of the stickers while exploring the history of the fruit s countries of origin, and the influence of transnational corporations on this process. By highlighting the wider implications of economic globalization, this project offers a unique perspective on these complex dynamics. Ilan Dubi – Avant l océan (direction) A short film shot in Lausanne by night. “A 15-year-old boy decides to flee his city to join Olivia on her way to the ocean. Only, a transportation issue forces them to wait in the city by night.” With a shoulder-mounted camera and a small crew, we set out into the streets of Lausanne to film the wanderings of two teenagers tinged with the melancholy of departure. In this film, with its saturated images and surreal sounds, I sought to explore the notion of introspection and the feeling of disillusionment that haunts our teenage years. The film opens with a shot of the ocean at sunset, followed by a transparent portrait of the main character.

Giulia Goy – Rose à la ferme (direction) Attracted to different image regimes, it was obvious to me that I wanted to use them for my graduation film. I knew that I wanted to film cows, but I was not yet aware of my attraction to them. I prefer documentaries, because of the freedom they give me and the chance they give me to play with fiction casually. I had already experimented with this form with my previous short film, Casting di un Padre, and it made me want to delve deeper into this personal approach. I really wanted to experiment with my practice, to get out of my comfort zone and to move towards a form of cinema that speaks to me. Synopsis: Rose, a young filmmaker looking for a job, decides to change direction and train as a farmer. This coming-of-age story questions our relationship with the land, with art and with the role of filmmakers as observers of our world.
