Carhartt WIP × ECAL Earlier this year, Carhartt WIP (for Work in Progress) teamed up with ECAL, inviting Bachelor Photography students to interpret in their own way some of the emblematic pieces of the American clothing brand, which develops its own collections from the original Carhartt work clothes. The students, led by art director Nicolas Poillot, produced an editorial report, which was included in the latest issue of "WIP Magazine" published by Carhartt WIP and some of whose images will be exhibited at the ECAL on the occasion of the launch of this book.
La Prairie x ECAL collaboration,22–25.01.2021,ECAL & La Prairie Instagram As part of the partnership with ECAL, Swiss Luxury House La Prairie has collaborated with students of the Master of Advanced Studies in Design for Luxury and Craftsmanship programme, under the creative leadership of Sabine Marcelis. Gal Bulka from Israel, Paula Chacartegui from Spain, Chia-Ling Chang from Taiwan, Apolline Morel-Lab from France, Fernando Rivero from Mexico, and Charlotte Therre from Switzerland distinguished themselves as part of this collaboration with La Prairie. They were invited to design an object of design that expresses the brand s vision of Swissness – the purity, precision and timelessness inherent to the land of the house s origins. Using materials native to Switzerland, each student expressed a unique interpretation that captures the imagination. Collectively, their works embody an unmistakable Swiss aesthetic and, as citizens of the world, they bring a singular perspective to the notion of Swissness. The result is a combination of sculptural, kinetic, interactive and time-infused works that express diverse and creative interpretations of Swiss aesthetics. The works tell an emotional, immersive story through these installations. The six students and their works will be featured in an Instagram exhibition hosted on La Prairie s page from Thursday 21 January 2021. The winning student will receive a grant from La Prairie to use towards launching their design career. The winning piece will be selected by two parties: by a jury composed of design experts from ECAL and La Prairie and a call for votes from the public over Instagram. The final result will be announced on Monday 25 January 2021.

This Suissimage/SSA Société Suisse des Auteurs award, which honors emerging talent, presented 27 short films of all genres. It should be noted that the film was partly produced by Ketsia Stocker and the sound was the work of Vuk Vukmanovic, both of them in the framework of their specialization in Master Cinema as well. With the participation also of Theodora Menthonnex from the option Sound of Bachelor Cinema. ECAL at Festival Lausanne Lumières,24.11–24.12.2020,Tour Bel-Air, Lausanne Until 24 December, ECAL and its students invite the inhabitants of the capital of the canton of Vaud to relax, breathe, dance or travel through visual compositions on the iconic Bel-Air tower, which serves as a beacon in the city for the occasion. The project involved around fifty students divided into groups of two. The students, who graduated from ECAL s Visual Communication Department s Bachelors in Graphic Design, Media & Interaction Design and Photography, were supervised by Angelo Benedetto, Vincent Jacquier, Clément Lambelet and Florian Pittet, assisted by Kylan Luginbühl, Amaury Hamon and Julien Gurtner. "USM Design Grant x ECAL" exhibition,05–14.11.2020,Design Days, Flon, Lausanne For the 4th edition of the USM Design Grant awarded by the USM Foundation, ECAL s Bachelor Industrial Design students, under the direction of Swiss designer Adrien Rovero, were asked to design listening stations that materialise the sound they emit, generating a distinctive multi-sensory experience in the context of a public exhibition. On the occasion of the Design Days, the winners of the grant, Martin Stricker and Theo Luvisotto, present "Infinity", a visual and sound installation that invites the user to enter an infinite space. Visitors can look through an opening and feel the echo of their own voice, while seeing themselves in an infinite reflection. The openings are positioned at different heights, allowing children and adults to interact freely within the structure. The "Bambino" project by Bérengère Bussioz and Clémence Buytaert will also be on display. Thanks to two loudspeakers integrated in the backrest, this chatty bench, installed in outdoor or indoor cultural spaces, whispers sounds or information to visitors. www.designdays.ch www.fondationusm.org

ECAL Masterclass: Danielle Lessovitz,27.10.2020,IKEA Auditorium, ECAL ECAL Masterclass: Danielle Lessovitz – Screenwriter and film director, Brooklyn/New York ECAL Masterclass Danielle Lessovitz, screenwriter and film director, New York Tuesday 27 October 2020 at 6 pm, IKEA Auditorium At 6.30pm, screening of the "Port Authority" movie Within the framework of the ECAL Residency program at La Becque, Danielle Lessovitz, American filmmaker, has been invited to teach in the Cinema Department of ECAL for the fall semester 2020-2021.During her stay at the artist residency located in La Tour-de-Peilz, she will simultaneously work on various her future film projects. Born in 1982, Danielle Lessovitz is a screenwriter and film director based in Brooklyn, (New York). She studied documentary film at Northwestern University and fine arts at New York University Tisch School of the Arts. She currently works as a professor at Rutgers University. Her practice varies between filmmaking and artistic or video installations. Her projects typically focus on marginalized communities and she often stars non-professional actors. She is a part of the Brooklyn Filmmakers Collective. She directed her first short film, Batteries, in 2009. In 2017, she co-wrote and co-produced the film "Mobile Homes", which was showcased in Cannes at la “Quinzaine des Réalisateurs”. In 2019, she directed her first feature, "Port Authority", which was executive-produced by Martin Scorsese and presented as a world premiere at Festival de Cannes as part of the “Un Certain Regard” official selection. On the occasion of this Masterclass, Danielle Lessovitz will be in conversation with Jasmin Basic, Coordinator of the Master Cinema ECAL/HEAD (discussion will be held in English). The Masterclass will be followed by a screening of Port Authority at 6.30pm. The film in set in the ballroom scene of Harlem and narrates the encounter between a young white man and a group of Afro-Americans queer dancers.

Peltre s lightweight, smooth, durable and heat resistance surface as for many decades made it perfect for kitchenware, but other products applications are less common nowadays. Seeing an opportunity to challenge this industry and seek new fields of applications, second-year Bachelor Industrial Design students of ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne are proposing a fresh take on garden furniture and accessories that takes full benefits of enamelled steel qualities. Being scratch resistant, weatherproof and easy to clean, the enamelled products are keeping it up against the elements. Under the guidance of Swiss designer Francisco Torres, students conceived a range of objects from a simple watering cans, sturdy solar lanterns, playful rocking toy cows, divers plant supports, basic and compact garden tools, multipurpose low tables and resounding cowbells for the backyard menagerie. The exhibited objects where enamelled in Mexico by the skillful craftsmen of Delta Porceltech, in Polotitlán City, Mexico. For professionals Dedicated to any types of institution, organisation or company, this event offered to meet with the creative talents of tomorrow. It offered the opportunity to look for expert profiles or simply foster links with the 2020 graduates and therefore discover their skills in graphic and type design, photography, media & interaction design, industrial design, fine arts or cinema, addressing contemporary themes such as the use of technologies, sustainability and a variety of other societal challenges. Human Rights Photography Prize to a graduate of ECAL The Act On Your Future Foundation is very pleased to announce the names of the two winners of the fifth edition of the Human Rights Photography Prize on the theme "No Planet B: Human Rights in Times of Ecological Crisis": Lowena Poole for "Stop Time By Smashing Clocks" (RCA/Royal College of Art, London) and Romain Roucoules for "Global Solutions" (ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne) The Jury thus wished to reward two artists at the beginning of their careers with different profiles and approaches. The prizewinners receive a contribution of CHF 10,000 to be shared between them in order to enable them to produce an exhibition following on from the prize-winning projects. Their work as well as the projects of the other finalists will also be included in the retrospective book that the Foundation will publish to mark the five-year anniversary of the competition. The exhibition of the winning projects and the book will be presented at the Centre de la photographie Genève (CPG) from 27 October to 15 November 2020. ECAL at Sculpture Garden, Geneva – Le cours de l eau,18.06–30.09.2020,Parc des Eaux-Vives, Geneva On the occasion of the Geneva Biennial: Sculpture Garden organized by artgenève and the MAMCO (curator of the exhibition: Balthazar Lovay) until 30 September 2020, students in 2nd year Bachelor Industrial Design from ECAL present a Bisse project in the Parc des Eaux-Vives. No doubt you have already walked, or dreamt of walking, along a Bisse in Canton Valais. A Bisse is a historical irrigation channel, many of which run through the idyllic Alpine landscape. Perhaps it was this romantic notion that inspired the National Exhibition of 1896 to recreate and display a “Mazot”, a typical wooden Alpine hut, albeit conveying a rather stereotypical idea of Switzerland. This larch wood hut, which could be considered as a forerunner of the circular economy, has been given a new lease of life for passersby to admire in the Eaux-Vives park. Is it a decorative object? Is it nostalgic? Or maybe folklore? The 2nd year Bachelor Indus-trial Design students at ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne, under the supervision of programme director Stéphane Halmaï-Voisard and their professor Adrien Rovero, have chosen to recreate the architecture of a traditional Bisse. This construction is also made of larch wood and includes several surprising features, starting with a viewing platform, a map of Lake Geneva, a water mirror and a simple bench to sit and contemplate a basic element: the flow of water. This project brings us closer to nature and makes sense in today s world where traditional values and local sourcing are being revived. Danish furniture manufacturers RBM by Flokk have embarked on a semester-long design project with students from ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne (Switzerland). “What a great challenge for the students to collaborate with an important brand in order to create future experiences based on their experiences from the past! Back to school and to the future!” says Alexis Georgacopoulos, Director of ECAL. Based around the title, The Future of School Seating, the 1st year Master Product Design students worked with course leader and designer Camille Blin, assisted by Margo Clavier, to explore alternatives to today s traditional school chair, specifically for children aged 6–12. “We tasked the students at ECAL to reimagine traditional school chairs and to design a product that fits seamlessly into the operating culture of future learning environments. INTERFERENCES – Forty-Four Excuses for Participation and a Zero Mario de Vega with BA Fine Arts and Media & Interaction Design students A collaborative project between Bachelor Fine Arts and Bachelor Media & Interaction Design students from ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne following a workshop led by sound artist Mario de Vega, visiting professor during the fall semester 2019 at ECAL and resident at La Becque | Artists Residency. Through a conceptual approach to sound, this exhibition proposes a scenario in which the eye takes the role of the ear, and vice versa. Within the notion of “Aural Vision”, the presented works result from a short seminar that served as an introduction to a larger educative experience which aims to extend collaborations between Media & Interaction Design and Fine Arts, using sound as a bridge. The project is based on the 45 definitions of the INTERFERENCES publication. It investigates the ongoing developments of timebased media, taking advantage of its benefits and advances, through a critical perspective. "Making FASHION Sense" exhibition with ECAL graduates,16.01–08.03.2020,HEK, Basel On the occasion of the exhibition " Making FASHION Sense " at HeK - Haus der elektronischen Künste Basel until 8 March 2020, two ECAL alumni presents several projects. This exhibition showcases the radical transformation of fashion through technology. Robot arms and mixed reality, holograms and drones have all paraded down international catwalks. «Making FASHION Sense» focuses on the impact of technology upon creative processes in the fashion industry, as well as on artistic paths leading towards increasing sustainability: Fashion which makes sense. With "BASE" (2019), presented for his BA Media & Interaction Design diploma, the Swiss designer Alfatih introduces a concept of fashion for digital spaces, and thereby an alternative fashion economy. The project includes a collection of filters for Instagram/Snapchat, a series of garments that can be used for avatars in the game Grand Theft Auto, as well as an interactive installation/performance presenting the concept of the brand BASE. “Active Shoes” (2019) by ECAL BA Industrial Design graduate Christophe Guberan belongs to a series of “active textiles”, which uses technology to radically questiontraditional production processes. By printing on stretch fabrics of varying layer thicknesses, he develops self-assembling designs which reconfigure themselves in preprogrammed shapes. ECAL at the Youth Olympic Games – Lausanne 2020,09–22.01.2020,Lausanne On the occasion of the Youth Olympic Games – Lausanne 2020 , ECAL particpates in several projects. On the occasion of the Youth Olympic Games – Lausanne 2020, ECAL particpates in several projects: --- Design of the cauldron, medal trays and podiums The cauldron, the medal trays and the podiums are three of the most symbolic elements of the Olympic Games. Second-year Industrial Design Bachelor s students from the ECAL were tasked with designing them. The students had to meet certain operational constraints and technical requirements: The cauldron must be able to be supplied with wood pellets, the result of a partnership between several organisations in the Vaud region, including the Lignum Vaud, which brings together all the regional players in the wood sector. This ecological innovation makes this cauldron the most eco-responsible in the history of the Olympic Games. It must also be removable and an integral part of the Games legacy. The podiums would have to be assembled outside at the last minute, often on uneven ground. They needed to be solid, light and large enough for several athletes. The medal trays had to be big enough to hold both medals and mascots. Cauldron Design: ECAL (Bachelor Industrial Design) Student: François Lafortune Production: C-FOR! + Ecole de la construction This cauldron project took inspiration from “freeskiing” culture, seeking to reflect it in both style and substance. Freeskiing is the world of skateparks and snowparks, with which many young people are very familiar. The installation comprises a mini jump and a ramp, with the cauldron placed at the top. The project s designer, François, envisaged that it would be an integral part of the Opening Ceremony and that the cauldron could be lit by a freerider. After Lausanne 2020, the installation is set to be converted into part of a permanent skatepark for the people of Lausanne. So you ll be nice and warm, and all set to go cheer on your favourite athletes!” Mapping of the BodyCity Show Unique creation imagined for Lausanne en Jeux! - the animation program of the Youth Olympic Games Lausanne 2020 - BodyCity is a show where arts and urban sports meet in an impressive open-air setting, on the place Centrale of Lausanne. Five performances will take place in public on January 9, 11, 12, 18 and 19, 2020 at 6 p.m. "Bodies in fusion with the city", it is from this strong image that Nicolas Musin directed BodyCity, a contemporary show questioning the relationship of young generations to the city. On an open-air stage representing a city in constant mutation,more than 50 performers aged between 9 and 30 years will cross their disciplines from January 9, bringing together urban arts and sports suchas skateboarding, BMX, rollerblading, scooter, parkour and dance. Imagined within the framework of Lausanne en Jeux!, this show is above all a work of youth carried by art schools and urbandisciplines training centers established in the Lausanne conurbation. BodyCity was thus able to bring together different Lausanne actors such as the students of the ECAL (conception of video images) of the HEMU (composition of the original music and recording of the soundtrack), thedancers of the Ecole-Atelier Rudra Béjart (dance and percussion), JDS Events (hip hop, breakdance) aswell as the riders of La Fièvre and the tracers of X-Trem Move. A meeting between different cultures and disciplines that the director Nicolas Musin has managed to reunite in order to offer a unique and unprecedented show in Lausanne. The mapping of the show was thus created by the students of the Visual Communication Department (BA Graphic Design, BA Photography, BA Media & Interaction Design) under the direction of Vincent Jacquier, Angelo Benedetto, Jean-Vincent Simonet and Mitch Paone while editing was managed by Amaury Hamon and Clément Lambelet.

With 3 projects, ECAL is proud to participate in the "Global Grad Show" of the Dubai Design Week, a world-first exhibition of the most innovative projects from world s leading design schools. Curated by Eleanor Watson, "Global Grad Show"offers an overview of the issues and technologies that will shape the future. He has designed and built large-scale installations as well as exhibited in galleries around the world, including the Guggenheim Museum in NY. His work has been published extensively, for example in Wired and Fast Company. He is the co-editor of the book Being Material (MIT Press, 2019) and Editor-In-Chief of the journal 3D Printing and Additive Manufacturing. ECAL at Paris Photo 2019: Brutal 003,07–09.11.2019,Au Roi, Paris To celebrate the Paris Photo 2019 edition, the Bachelor Photography students of ECAL, under the artistic direction of Nicolas Poillot, translated the music of the producer IKAZ BOI into images. The visuals, sometimes smooth and neat, sometimes dark and rough, were produced by listening to the new project BRUTAL 3: an intimate album oscillating between romance and darkness composed with instrumental tracks only. Exclusively, 500 unpublished and numbered vinyl copies were created especially for this occasion. For two days, ECAL invests the Au Roi gallery, inviting spectators to a sound and visual journey, in an ephemeral sensory space generated by a synchronous video installation. Camille Henrot, Plasticienne, New York www.camillehenrot.fr Mercredi 18 septembre à 18 h, Auditoire IKEA, ECAL Née en 1978, Camille Henrot vit et travaille à New York. L artiste française développe une pratique variée qui mêle film, dessin, sculpture et installation. En puisant ses inspirations et ses sujets dans la vie quotidienne et dans la littérature, la mythologie, le cinéma et l anthropologie, l oeuvre de Camille Henrot reconsidère avec acuité les typologies d objets et les systèmes de pensées établis. En 2013, dans le cadre de la Smithsonian résidence à Washington DC, elle réalise le film Grosse Fatigue, avec lequel elle remporte le Lion d argent à la Biennale de Venise. Lauréate du Prix Nam June Paik 2014 et du Edvard Munch Art Award 2015, Camille Henrot a également participé aux Biennales de Lyon, Berlin et Sydney et a bénéficié d expositions personnelles dans des lieux prestigieux tels que le Schinkel Pavillon à Berlin, la Kunsthalle de Vienne, le New Museum à New York ou encore au Palais de Tokyo à Paris pour une carte blanche en 2017. Allant des travaux de première année jusqu aux travaux de diplôme, ces projets couvrent une diversité de supports mêlant visuels, sons et interactions, afin de placer le spectateur au coeur d expériences toujours plus oniriques. Plusieurs projets de réalité virtuelle explorent le thème du clip vidéo en offrant une expérience immersive, où sons et images se mélangent, se combinent, se coordonnent pour offrir des points de vue inédits et uniques. Une sélection de jeux vidéo propose des nouvelles manières d interagir avec la technologie. En explorant la simplicité à travers des mini-jeux ludiques ou en explorant la complexité à travers un projet de puzzle game plus conséquent, ces créations offrent des nouvelles perspectives quant à la forme et le fond du 10e art. A film from ECAL won a Student Oscar "Bonobo", Zoel Aeschbacher s Bachelor Film diploma, won the 2019 Student Academy Awards (Narrative - International Film Schools) - the Oscars for students - presented on October 17th at the Academy s Samuel Goldwyn Theater Beverly Hills This film has been pre-selected amongst 1615 short films and has won the Gold medal in the Narrative – International Film Schools category, given on the occasion of these exclusive student Oscars. Thanks to this award, the film becomes eligible for Oscars also awarded by the Hollywood Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in February 2020. Produced by ECAL and Nouvelle Tribu, Bonobo s summary by Zoel Aeschbacher is as follows: Félix, Ana and Seydoux live in the same social housing without knowing each other. The three characters seem linked by one and only element: the building s dilapidated elevator, an infernal machine leading them to an inescapable tragic destiny. Released in 2017, this film has already received numerous awards, including the Audience Award at the International Short Film Festival in Clermont-Ferrand, the Up Coming Award at the Soothurner Filmtagel, the Spirit Award for Short Narrative at the Brooklyn International Film Festival and the Best Fiction Short at the Melbourne International Film Festival.
