Raphaela Haefliger – Aligna Aligna is a typeface that aims to improve the typographic composition of web pages. Thanks to a combination of variable axes, it fills up the white space without recognising it. It balances the two pitfalls that are distorted characters and irregular composition and provides a regular text grey. Aligna can be combined with an algorithm that distributes the blank space of the line. During research for this project, a parametric font was created to evaluate the respective influence of different aspects of type design. Aligna gathers and combines the ideal value for each element combined on one variable font axis.

Joana Siniavskaja – Parallel I-IV Parallel I–IV is a text typeface composed of four cuts – text, italic, cursive italic and a back slant. Primarily drawn for print application, the family contains an optically corrected screen cut. The typeface provides the possibility to create a typographical hierarchy using a single weight, pointing to new ways of highlighting in print and web environments. The project came from a desire to design a dynamic typeface with strong character in long running text both in screen and print mediums. While creating unique shapes for contemporary use, the design is inspired by Transitional typefaces with a look at various Baroque and Modern typefaces. Remaining functional in small sizes, the typeface retains its qualities throughout the cuts and is suitable for title sizes as well.

Pierre Daendliker – Drifting Away (Photography) For my end-of-study work, I had to design the photography for a graduation film. Fiction / 13 30 min Synopsis A young caregiver reverts to a fantasy world to cope with the grief of losing her mother and to escape from the drudgery of the care home where she works. Student s comment For my end-of-study work, I had to design the photography for a graduation film. Preparing for the shoot entailed long discussions about the narration and the aesthetics of the short film. We opted for static shots composed like paintings. We aimed to minimise cuts to accentuate the character s drift through space. I sought to work with soft, white lights in the style of Roy Anderson s films, one of our main references, as well as the films of Abel & Gordon. We shot everything in real settings, which was a challenge in finding the best solutions to light large areas. I also worked upstream on the contrast/colour curve by creating my shooting LUTS. Pierre Daendliker

Solène Mercier – Les mouches de Beni (Photography) For my degree, I did the photography of the short film Les mouches de Beni, directed by Alice-Denyse Matthey. Fiction / 20 min Synopsis One evening, Beni, a young woman, meets her 65 year old neighbour Gégé. The two women become friends and Beni invites Gégé to discover her world through a surprising adventure. The birth of their cross-generational friendship will shed light on the complexity of bipolarity, a disorder from which Beni suffers. Music unites them and strengthens the core of their friendship. Student s comment For my degree, I did the photography of the short film Les mouches de Beni, directed by Alice-Denyse Matthey. This dramatic comedy tells the story of a young bipolar woman, Beni, who befriends her next-door neighbour, Gégé. A friendship grows between the two women, for better or for worse. Aesthetically, the work of lighting and framing depended on the interiority of the main character. To express her bipolarity, we went from a colourful and pop aesthetic to something darker and more subdued, to mark the transition from euphoria to depression. This light creation and the variations of frames create a unique style for a unique character and film. Solène Mercier

Marion Marquet – Moving from Trisha Like a typeface, Moving from Trisha offers a repertoire of ten choreographic signs generated based on an adaptation of Trisha Brown s Glacial Decoy. The dancer s movements serve as a support for the drawings of the characters. The vertical depth of the movements defines the thickness of the lines. These signs draw the trajectory of one of the dancers hands seen from above. Their feet are physically located in the centre of each sign, free to be interpreted according to a desired orientation and by the desired hand. The repertoire, which can be constantly developed, constitutes a methodology. A two-dimensional choreographic notation system and creates an applicable link to a three-dimensional performative interpretation.

Loris Wahler – Altered Pursuit For my graduation project, I decided to focus on movement through a music video clip. The intention is to use the graphic skills acquired during my years at ECAL in order to enhance an emotion transposed into music. The theme of the clip is centred around the idea of a race that repeats itself in different universes. By playing with these elements, a narrative is woven between the protagonist and his surrounding environment. The character used in the clip is a “bootleg” of the famous Disney character, Mickey. The intention is to use a character known to all in a radically different universe in order to be able to accentuate the dystopian side of the music.

Samara Krähenbühl – Il est passé tout à l heure, il m a dit de rien dire « At the turning point of the transition to adulthood, childhood and its memories re-emerge more than ever. Through a short film at the edge of video art, I question how to overcome one s traumas and reappropriate one s life experiences and grey areas. Because of its dreamlike character, the film takes on a surrealist tone. Through visual metaphors and mental imagery, I exorcise an intimate and painful episode of my childhood.»

Basil Pérot – As Long as You Wait This short film is about expressing our inability to come to terms with reality, especially during traumatic events. To reach this state of osmosis, we try to observe, feel, and listen as intensely as we can. This is how Pola s character tries to grasp reality, as she slowly sinks into madness, between paranoia and identity crisis. The project appears as a transcription of Pola s point of view and of the feelings she experiences. A book will compile Pola s thoughts that she writes throughout the film in a burst of lucidity through which she tries to convince herself that what she is experiencing is real.

Mika Matikainen – Beyond Function Often, we tend to subconsciously acknowledge only one single meaning for objects around us, but when it comes to things that have an emotional connection or deeper meaning to us, it is reasonable to question the validity of functionalism and to assume that we want to load more meaning into objects that are important and close to us. In a world full of objects that lack character, I sought to create a sculpture-like object that has value in itself yet disrupts the idea of a sculpture by having a real function, i.e., by acting as an enigmatic tea set. By combining these two ways of looking at this object, there can be many interpretations, which makes it valuable aesthetically, symbolically and functionally.

Tudor Ciurescu – The Dream I Still Have The rotating sculpture showcased in this exhibition, named The Dream I Still Have, is a reproduction of the artist s childhood swing, a rusty post-Soviet swing that holds a forgotten character. The character draws inspiration from Glenn/Shiftace, the non-gendered animatronic with a Freudian complex from the Hollywood film Chucky that was shot in Romania. The continuous movement of the swing aims to transpose the viewer into a state of reflection – a movement that relates to the swiping of videos on TikTok and the subject of Guy Debord s book, Society of the Spectacle. The work s movement is activated by a human presence thanks to sensors – the human presence being essential. Just like a theme park, art becomes a place to feel fear without the consequences.

Iris Moine – Twist Twist was thought out as part of the upcoming industrial design exhibition at mudac - Musée cantonal de design et d arts appliqués contemporains. The aim of this project is to engage children s curiosity about design, for whom the idea of visiting a museum is often not the most exciting. How can we encourage a stimulating visit and discovery of the exhibits? By bringing out an object from the exhibition, the Bold chair by Big-Game studio, this project transforms it into an interactive installation. Guided by a character on screen, children are invited to interact with certain parts of the chair: sitting, pinching, turning, etc. These interactions trigger games, and information is presented in a playful way, thus creating a direct and memorable relationship with the object and raising awareness of design.

Paolo Moretti appointed head of the ECAL Cinema Department As of September 1, 2022, Paolo Moretti will become the new head of the Cinema Department at ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne. Director and programmer of festivals, notably of the Quinzaine des réalisateurs at the Cannes Film Festival, Paolo Moretti will take over the responsibility of the Cinema Department of ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne in September 2022. He will succeed Pauline Gygax as head of the Bachelor Cinema program and Lionel Baier for the Master Cinema program (co-directed by HEAD Geneva). "I am above all very grateful to ECAL for offering me this opportunity. I am excited to continue the work initiated by Lionel Baier, then Pauline Gygax and to confront myself with a new dimension of the transmission of the codes and languages of contemporary cinema", says Paolo Moretti. After studying modern literature, between 2001 and 2008, Paolo Moretti worked for several film festivals and institutions in Europe, including the Centre Pompidou, the Filmoteca Española, the Cinemateca Portuguesa, the Leeds Film Festival and Cinéma du Réel. From 2008 to 2011, he was assistant to the director and programming advisor at the Venice Film Festival. In 2012 and 2013, he is a programming advisor for the Rome Film Festival (CinemaXXI). Since 2012, he has been collaborating with the Visions du Réel festival (Nyon), first as a member of the selection committee (2012-2017), then as an artistic advisor. From 2012 to 2018, he is also a member of the selection committee of FIDMarseille. He is the associate producer of the American independent feature film L for Leisure by Lev Kalman and Whitney Horn, presented at the Rotterdam Film Festival in 2014. Between 2014 and 2020, he works as a director of the La Roche-sur-Yon International Film Festival and of the art house cinema Le Concorde. Between 2018 and 2022, he is the general delegate of the Quinzaine des réalisateurs at the Cannes Film Festival. Since 2020, he has been the director of the art house cinema Les Cinémas du Grütli in Geneva, where he will be able to continue to carry out his mission in conjunction with ECAL, thanks to a redistribution of tasks, notably administrative, of the Geneva institution. "Paolo Moretti has an exceptional network and a rich and varied international experience, punctuated by numerous successes. Through his desire to constantly highlight the films of young talent, he has established himself over time as a valuable and privileged interlocutor for filmmakers and the industry. I am sure that his approach as an outstanding facilitator will suit our students perfectly and will lead them to progress even further and to surpass themselves", says Alexis Georgacopoulos, ECAL Director. For the Bachelor Cinema program, Paolo Moretti will replace Pauline Gygax - who will keep a part of her teaching at ECAL, but will concentrate primarily on her activity as a producer, the intensity of which obliges her to reduce her workload within the Cinema Department. As for Lionel Baier, co-director of the Master Cinema program, he will continue his career as a director, while also maintaining a teaching schedule at the Lausanne school. ECAL would like to take this opportunity to thank them for all their work and for having contributed to the fact that its film courses are considered among the best internationally. After viewing a few scenes from different films and becoming familiar with the use of a camera, participants will be divided into small groups and will write a very short sequence, which they will direct and act out. Patrick Muroni is a Swiss film director who graduated from the Ba in Film Studies at ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne. He won the artistic encouragement prize of the city of Renens during his studies. After his training, he directed "Un matin d été", his first self-produced short fiction film, which was selected in several festivals around the world. After an introduction to photography and some technical advice, participants will do a short research to define the "story" of their set of images, and make them. The photographs will then be printed and shown to the other participants, with a short explanation by each of them on their approach. Margot Sparkes (born in 1993 in Paris) is an independent artist, photographer and video maker who graduated from the ECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne (2020). She lives and works in Lausanne. Her practice explores the way our environment shapes our behaviour and our feelings. Through video, photography and sculpture, she seeks to generate representations and perceptions that question our relationship to what surrounds us, deploying new imaginaries that interweave several forms of reality, existence and narratives. Recently, her diploma work At Night There is No Sun has been included in the collection of the FRAC Poitou-Charentes (France). Audience: 13 to 18 years old (max. 10 participants) What to bring: smartphone with working camera (compulsory!) Palais Augmenté 2022 At the initiative of the Réunion des Musées Nationaux – Grand Palais and Fisheye , the second edition of the Palais Augmenté festival will be held from June 17 to 19, 2022 at the Grand Palais Ephémère in Paris. On this occasion, the Bachelor Media & Interaction Design of ECAL will be represented in several ways. ECAL Virtual Reality Lab Bachelor Media & Interaction Design students propose an immersion in the ECAL Virtual Reality Lab - a series of Virtual Reality projects, created as part of a course with Sami Benhadj, questioning the representation and place of the spectator in a 360° sequence. The projects focus on the link between moving images, visual effects, rhythm and immersion. With the use of computer generated 3D imagery, these projects revisit the form of the video clip in an innovative way by giving them different possible readings thanks to the interactivity of the medium. Students Elodie Anglade - Maya Bellier - Soraya Camina - Marine Dang - Basil Dénéréaz - Nora Fatehi - Mélanie Fontaine - Sébastien Galera - Léonard Guyot - Jamy Herrmann - Evan Kelly - Leoni Limbach - Kylan Luginbühl - Bogdan Nastase - Mika Pica - Jorge Reis - Julie Ryser - Nathanaël Vianin Mood Forecast & The Looking Glass - Pierry Jaquillard & ZEROTERA ECAL graduates are honored with Pierry Jaquillard (Mood Forecast) and the collective ZEROTERA (The Looking Glass), who each present a project. In the first one, a personalised weather forecast for each person appears in the Grand Palais Ephémère. It can be sunny, cloudy, rainy or rainbows, at dusk or dawn… In the second, mysterious floating architectures are revealed. Like windows to another dimension, we discover an astral universe populated by avatars. These curious characters, like false reflections, have a familiar behavior… Can you recognise them? Conference by Pierry Jaquillard & Paul Lëon (ZEROTERA) Sunday, June 19 from 1 to 2 pm Feedback on the creation of digital works: new tools and emerging methods. How to integrate the virtual in a creative process? How to appropriate it? What place to give it? How not to get lost in it? How to make it cohabit with the tangible space? How to imagine singular contexts? Grand Palais Ephémère Avenue Pierre Loti 75007 Paris France www.palaisaugmente.fr

ECAL Milano 2022: Yamaha Sound Machines,07–12.06.2022,Spazio Orso 16, Milano On the occasion of the Milan Design Week (7 to 12 June 2022), Master Product Design students from ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne have created, in collaboration with Japanese brand Yamaha and its Design Laboratory, new types of music players in order to meet new requirements related to listening to music. Under the guidance of Camille Blin, Head of the project, the students first investigated and documented different contemporary processes and ways of listening to music, specifically through photographs and videos. The aim was to create a cartography of these practises. In a second step, they transcribed and applied these findings to new music playback devices – relevance and innovation being essential in this phase of the project. Finally, with the help of specialists from the Yamaha Design Laboratory based in Hamamatsu (Japan) and Los Angeles (USA), they developed the formal and technical qualities of their initial concepts into prototypes. Six projects were finalised, with great attention to details and materials, which are now presented thanks to a scenography by Anthony Guex. Hence, the exhibition features a music player that offers musicians a new way to practise their instruments using artificial intelligence; an installation that responds to the growing demand for live concerts at home by using a combination of sound and light to mimic a real concert environment; ASMR instruments that offer listeners a soothing moment by playing the sounds of relaxing movements; a home speaker that allows for a smoother transition between the different music players commonly used in the home; a player that offers an unexpected experience by displaying the rotation of a vinyl record vertically on a pedestal, and a speaker that allows people to listen to their music using their favourite objects as a trigger. Ecal×Mini Rethinking the Wheel "Rethinking the Wheel" – a series of projets on steering wheels. Will we be controlling our cars through voice recognition in future? With a soft toy? How about a pizza box? The digital transformation and electrification of cars has opened up a world of possibilities at the wheel. MINI s design team and ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne have collaborated closely on a sophisticated design study to develop unexpected ideas for the future of steering wheels. Under the direction of ECAL tutors Camille Blin and Christophe Guberan, Master students in Product Design have addressed the topic and come up with spectacular designs, developing, improving and ultimately achieving their vision in ongoing consultation with Christian Bauer, Head of Interior Design at MINI. The result: nine innovative and surprising designs that question existing shapes and materials – and, as such, the way in which we might interact with our cars in the future – with a lot of creativity.

7 TYPES OF AMBIGUITY — A PARADE by Arto Lindsay,05–25.05.2022,Cinema Studio, ECAL Arto Lindsay is an American artist, guitarist, singer and composer living in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. A genius of noise with collaboration as his main method, he has been working since the early 2000s on the carnival parade as a gigantic musical instrument. No one can predict in advance what will come out of it, with its mixture of unity and partiality, euphoria and frustration, performance art and celebration. The installation presented at the ECAL proposes an original development of his previous street parades. With a group of musicians from the bloco Afros of Salvador de Bahia, students in the Bachelor of Fine Arts program and programmer Stefan Brunner, Lindsay overturns his own conventions of the parade: inside the ECAL s Studio Cinema, the public can walk through a spiral of loudspeakers broadcasting both the realistic recordings of the percussionists and their thousand distant, confused, probable reflections. Opening 04.05.22, 6-8pm Dates 05.05-25.05.22 Free access Opening hours Tuesday to Friday, 16h-19h Or by appointment : 7types@ecal.ch Location ECAL – Cinema Studio Av. du Temple 5, 1020 Renens www.visioncreationnewsound.ch In the framework of the research project Phantom Power conducted at the ECAL and with the support of the Réseau de Compétences Design & Arts Visuels de la HES-SO. Collaboration with CSEM Through a unique project, students from ECAL and CSEM s engineers have effortlessly combined modern arts & crafts and nanotechnology to create a series of innovative jewelry pieces, "Structural Colors". The complex jewelry forms envisioned by the students were created with 3D printing, pushing CSEM s engineers to reinterpret their nanotechnologies in a refreshing, esthetic way. Silicon nitride was deposited in thin layers on the surface of some pieces, enhancing the designs by creating a colorful iridescent effect. On the other pieces, customized nanotechnology scatters light to create a pearlescent effect. The result of this unique collaboration is five jewellery collections, created under the direction of the Lausanne-based studio Panter&Tourron by students of the Master of Advanced Studies in Design for Luxury & Craftsmanship at ECAL.

Mechanical Marvels" exhibition at Homo Faber 2022,10.04–01.05.2022 On the occasion of Homo Faber a public exhibition of the finest European craftsmanship organised by the Michelangelo Foundation and staged at the Fondazione Giorgio Cini in Venice (Italy) from 10 April to 1st May 2022, ECAL presents a series of projects by Master of Advanced Studies in Design for Luxury & Craftsmanship developed in collaboration with Association Mec-Art. For a number of years, the MAS in Design for Luxury & Craftsmanship programme at ECAL has enabled its students to work in close collaboration with prestigious maisons to further their design education in numerous areas of excellence. The university s partnership with Association Mec-Art is fully in line with this approach, creating the opportunity for students to collaborate with artisans based in Sainte-Croix, the town in the French Swiss Jura which is home to all the know-how involved in the creation of art mechanics. Here, artisans perpetuate their time-honoured expertise in the mechanical arts, including music boxes and automatons—traditions recently added to UNESCO s List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This ambitious project has brought together international students and world-renowned artisans in order to combine design, innovation and engineering. “Mechanical Marvels” features five interactive installations that mix visual and sound effects and enables visitors to operate the mechanical masterpieces by winding a crank, thereby bringing the various automatons to life.
