The Sources of Jan Tschichold s The New Typography Jan Tschichold s essay Die neue Typographie (The New Typography, 1928) is a game-changing book, acclaimed as the curtain raiser of modern graphic design. While it takes the form of a critical essay and an operative manual, its sources have been understudied because of their difficult identification. This project aims to reconstruct the body of sources that Tschichold drew on to understand the broader cultural context of the book, through an international conference on its impact and a travelling exhibition. The year 2018 marked the 90th anniversary of the publication of Jan Tschichold s Die neue Typographie (The New Typography). After almost a century, Tschichold s game-changing book, together with the typographic movement that stemmed from it, still attracts the interest and curiosity of graphic design historians and practitioners. The book has entered the historiographical canon and its appeal has not faded. Yet, The New Typography is a victim of its own success: it enjoys the benefits of canonisation, while suffering some side effects. Having reached an almost mythical status, The New Typography is often taken for granted and rarely questioned or closely scrutinised. This paradox is the starting point of the present research project. Jan Tschichold (Leipzig 1902 – Locarno 1974) was a German-born, Swiss-naturalised typographer, type and book designer, teacher, typography theorist and critic. In the 1920s he became one of the leaders of the New Typography movement. His conversion to the Modernist cause was mediated by the Bauhaus lesson. This was learnt first through a visit to the Bauhaus exhibition in Weimar in the summer of 1923, and encouraged in the following years through acquaintance and friendship with key exponents of the Modernist movement such as László Moholy-Nagy and El Lissitzky. With the Nazis rise to power in 1933, Tschichold escaped Germany and took refuge in Switzerland, where he spent the rest of his life with the exception of two stays in England, in 1937 and between 1947 and 1949. Published in Berlin in 1928, Tschichold s The New Typography is a manifesto. It follows an earlier statement published in October 1925 in a special issue of the trade magazine Typographische Mitteilungen, entitled “Elementare Typographie.” It was intended as a textbook for graphic designers, printers, typesetters and typographers. The term “New Typography” was first used by László Moholy-Nagy in the Bauhaus exhibition catalogue of 1923. The New Typography, also known as “elementary” or “functional” typography, is the manifestation of Modernism in graphic design and printed communication. Its rules included the privilege for sans-serif typefaces, non-centred page layouts, photography and photomontage, standardised paper sizes, and the active use of white space. After the war, Tschichold gradually distanced himself from the New Typography. He condemned the rigidity of the movement from both a political-moral and a strictly typo- graphical perspective. The research project relies on the hypothesis that, despite being broadly considered a pivotal and game-changing book that paved the way to modern graphic design, The New Typography deserves further and closer scrutiny. Building on the hypothesis that bibliographic sources are among the so-far overlooked and neglected aspects of The New Typography which are waiting to be identified, discussed and contextualised, the research project employs them as a means to open the black box in which Tschichold s book has been kept until now. Once the bibliographical references (books, magazines, grey literature) have been identified, the project investigates what they can tell us about the lineage in which The New Typography was rooted and the kind of discourses and networks it stemmed from. The focus on the sources aims to provide a more complex alternative to the worn-out rhetoric of the “pioneers” of graphic design.Main applicantECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne Matthieu Cortat Davide FornariResearch teamChiara Barbieri Martin SøbergPeriodMay 2019 – June 2021Supported byECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne HES–SO, Fonds stratégique RCDAVDisseminationWebsite die-neue-bibliographie.ch Conference Jan Tschichold s The New Typography: Its Roots and Impact on National Scenes, 26 April 2023, ECAL/École cantonale d art de Lausanne

Exhibition "Glowstone",21.04–07.05.2021,Gallery l elac From 22 April to 7 May 2021 at the Galerie l elac, the exhibition "Glowstone" presents projects by students of the ECAL Master Fine Arts programme, initiated during a workshop organised extramuros at Espace Sébeillon by artist Neïl Beloufa. The students first action upon arriving at the satellite space has been to rename it "Flowstone". As a defining guideline for their proposal, the group then opted for horizontal modes of production in the making of their projects: the founding of collectives, the absence of a unique organizing figure. In the aftermath of the workshop, Flowstone morphed into a space where the production of ongoing projects cohabited with a series of ephemeral performances and shows. "Glowstone" presents an archive of the off campus experience alongside projects launched at Flowstone, at times modified for the context of their current exhibition at Gallery l elac. A variety of projects, often created by at least four hands, can be discovered in the gallery: paintings, sculptures, video installations and sound pieces echo each other - all plunged in a cleverly orchestrated play of light. Jean-Jacques Rousseau inspires the ECAL/HEAD Master in Cinema On the occasion of the reopening of the Maison de Rousseau et de la Littérature (MRL) in Geneva on April 21, 2021, students of the ECAL/HEAD Master s degree in Cinema are presenting a series of films as part of the Parcours Rousseau, which was designed by the Zurich architect Tristan Kobler of the Holzer Kobler office and co-written by two Rousseau specialists - Martin Rueff and Guillaume Chenevière. On the occasion of the reopening of the Maison de Rousseau et de la Littérature (MRL) in Geneva on April 21, 2021, students of the ECAL/HEAD (Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne/Haute école d art et de design Genève) Master s degree in Cinema are presenting a series of films as part of the Parcours Rousseau, which was designed by the Zurich architect Tristan Kobler of the Holzer Kobler office and co-written by two Rousseau specialists - Martin Rueff and Guillaume Chenevière. This journey perpetuates and updates the thought of the famous Swiss philosopher, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, by confronting it with the challenges of our time: education, nature and environment, secularism, citizenship, happiness. From September 2020 to January 2021, fifteen students of the ECAL/HEAD Master of Cinema - five in Directing, three in Scriptwriting, four in Sound, three in Editing - have taken up the major challenge of bringing together in a coherent way the historical and literary dimension of Jean-Jacques Rousseau with a personal and creative approach through filmic objects (documentary, fiction, montage film, archive film...). Each participant took part in the conception, direction and post-production of the films - mixing teams and roles (direction, editing, sound, script...). Eleven works are thus to be discovered within the framework of the course. Words form language – Typography forms meaning This research focusses on ways explored in typography to use letters as means of expression in order to emphasize the semantic, phonetic or visual qualities of language. Even though the typographer s work conventionally is to layout a given text in the most readable or accessible way, to guarantee the least interference possible between the text and the reader, there is a task beyond that: Typographers may put forward the distinct qualities and ideas of a text by translating it into a coherent visual form, a form that communicates a specific idea. As such typography is concerned with the meaning of words and their arrangement within a given surface. This research focusses on ways explored in typography to use letters as means of expression in order to emphasize the semantic, phonetic or visual qualities of language. From the liberated language of the Futurists to the experiments of the Dadaists, and the “New Typography” in the 1920s and into the heyday of Swiss modernist typography, we have seen a constant investigation into experimental uses of typography. But when speaking of typographic design and its influence on language, the voice of the concrete poets is often overlooked. As a poetic movement that emerged in the beginning of the 1950s in several European countries and South America, concrete poetry established itself internationally before fading into oblivion by the end of the1970s. This research tries to contextualize concrete poetry within the field of typography with a particular focus on the work of Swiss-Bolivian poet Eugen Gomringer, one of the key figures of the movement.Main applicantECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne (project leader)Research team (researcher) (researcher) (supervisor)PeriodNovember 2017 – March 2021Supported byECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne DNP Foundation for Cultural Promotion (Graphic Culture Research Grant) Swiss Design Network (Workshop Grant)DisseminationConferences January 29, 2020: Launch of the series Visual archives, with Giliane Cachin, Davide Fornari, Sarah Klein, Robert Lzicar, Simon Mager, Andrea Wiegelmann, Zurich, Never Stop Reading. HERE AND THERE A new educational model for a post-pandemic world The global pandemic has forever changed how we work, learn and play, making virtual communication the primary form of human interaction. Here and There is a new digital pedagogy that enables students to create networked physical interfaces with limited material resources and tools, while being away and stripped from a traditional in-person studio and workshop setting. Initiated during a week-long workshop in Cambridge (USA) in March 2020, it brought together students in Bachelor Media & Interaction Design from ECAL and students from MIT s Undergraduate Design Minor and Bachelor of Science in Art and Design programs. During the 2020 spring quarantine, a series of open source software and hardware tools were developed to allow students to build electronic objects from simple and readily available materials. These objects were then dynamically routed and connected to each other to physically augment video chatting and to allow students to extend their virtual reach into each other s tangible spaces. For the first phase of this project, students had to imagine, design and implement two interfaces, whose design and behavior allowed and suggested a new form of communication between two people, in two separate places. Notions of remote presence, simultaneous actions, shared experience and telepresence were explored, fundamentally expanding the ways through which we interact and communicate. Open to other academic institutions and the public at large, we plan to continue improving the software routing interface, the techniques for documentation and sharing prototypes, as well as the remote interfaces that we hope will help foster a more human and connected post-pandemic world. Phantom Power Phantom Power questions the social configurations of the non-audible narratives of aural practices in performances and public sound installations. How does a performance or an installation acquire substance? How does it come to matter to the people who experience it? And do we account for it? The research project Phantom Power attempts to answer these broad questions by means of a descriptive study of three public performances and sound installations organised at ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne. Each case has been chosen for the specificity of what the invited artists (Leif Elggren, Arto Lindsay, Marja-leena Sillanpää, La Monte Young and Marian Zazeela) call upon: electronic voice phenomena (EVP), the interiority of sound, and transport through sound. All three are the object of an ethnographic approach using original methodology: for each event, one day is devoted to the experience of performances and installations, followed by a discussion between the public and the artists, monitored by guest researchers (Vinciane Despret, Salomé Voegelin and Juliette Volcler). The next day 1st-year BA students in Fine Arts re-enact the performances in front of the artists themselves. In other words, the chosen methodology offers a collective conceptual analysis on the first day and a collective analysis through practice on the second day. This is meant to help produce a field survey account of sound and of the narratives and the relational modes of existence of the works. Phantom Power is a research project initiated by the BA in Visual Arts department at ECAL. It questions the social configurations of the non-audible narratives of aural practices in performances and public sound installations.Main applicantsECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne (project leader) (project leader)Research teamVisiting lecturers Vinciane Despret, Leif Elggren, Arto Lindsay, Marja-leena Sillanpää, Salomé Voegelin, Juliette, Volcler, La Monte Young, Marian ZazeelaPartnersInstitut Supérieur des Beaux-Arts Besançon / Franche-ComtéPeriodfebruary 2021 – january 2023Supported byECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne Strategic fund of the University of Applied Sciences Western Switzerland (HES-SO RCDAV)DisseminationPerformance 29 April 2021: Leif Elggren and Marja-leena Sillanpää Exhibitions From 25 November 2021 to 31 January 2022: Dream House by La Monte Young, Marian Zazeela (sound and light environment) May 2022: Parade by Arto Lindsay Talks 29 April 2021: Vinciane Despret, Leif Elggren, Marja-leena Sillanpää and the 1 BA AV students 1 December 2021: La Monte Young, Marian Zazeela, Yung Hee Choi, Salomé Voegelin and the 1 BA AV students (online) 2 December 2021: Branden W. Furniture under pressure The potential of shape memory materials in furniture design. In response to the climatic, technical and aesthetic challenges posed in the field of industrial design by the transportation of goods, the Furniture under pressure project exhaustively investigates the possibilities of flat-packing offered by materials capable of occupying a fraction of their volume and then reconfiguring themselves in one piece, without mechanical assembly. This research-creation focuses on a specific case study, the chair. Over the last decade, the rapid development of new communication technologies has brought consumers and sellers much closer together. Physical sales outlets are constantly decreasing while online sales are increasing. Although still relatively unaffected by this change, furniture sales are no exception. In view of this development, thinking in terms of objects occupying as little space as possible for a time – known as flat-packing or flat-shipping – is of interest in terms of logistics and transport. By favouring an empirical approach to design research, focused on the use of the intrinsic properties of innovative materials rather than on the elaboration of complex mechanisms or assemblies, Furniture under pressure aims to bring to light a type of solution that is radically different from the DIY model of furniture, exemplified by IKEA. Indeed, the aim is to experimentally evaluate the opportunities offered by "smart" materials capable of reconfiguring themselves, under certain conditions, into a state occupying a fraction of their initial volume, and then recovering it, whether due to their natural compressibility (sponges, synthetic foams, rubber), their shape memory properties (metal alloys, polymers) or their ability to fold, whether naturally (fabric, paper) or through engineering work (folding, CNC cutting and milling, 3D printing). Inspired by Gaetano Pesce s famous Up5 armchair, the aim of the Furniture under pressure project is to identify and select a large number of materials with potential for producing a seat that can be transported in a small volume and return to its original shape once unpacked. More advanced and concrete exploration of the characteristics and possibilities of these materials will lead to the identification of at least five concrete candidates for real implementable production, from which prototype seats will be developed and their compression, packaging and expansion tested and documented. The prototypes will have to meet a specific objective: they will have to be able to be delivered in a standard Post Office box and installed in one piece without manual assembly of different parts. At the same time, the knowledge gathered will be shared through an online catalogue presenting the materials studied and their properties, as well as the results of the tests carried out. The inventory will constitute a virtual material library for use by designers.Main applicantsECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne (project leader)Research Team (researcher) (researcher) (designer-researcher) (designer-researcher) (designer-researcher) Florian Fischbacher (head of communication) (graphic designer) (photographer/videographer) (research assistant)Periodfebruary 2021 – november 2022 Supported byECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne Strategic Funds HES-SO (RCDAV)Lecturers and researchersJamie Paik Mariana Popescu Skylar TibbitsStudents1st-year MA students in Product Design, ECAL, class of 2020-2021

Automated Photography The Automated Photography research project (2019–2021) is conducted by Milo Keller in the framework of the MA in Photography at ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne. It is a continuation of the research project Augmented Photography, equally conducted at ECAL (2016–2017), which aimed to question the mutability of the digital image, transformed both in its physical materiality and in its virtual expression. For the past twenty years, many photographers have been integrating images produced autonomously by machines into their work. We are now witnessing a paradigm shift in the process of creating photography. From photographic capture in the strict sense we move towards practices involving appropriation, automated and computational processes: a phenomenon which reflects a conception of space that is increasingly less built on the equivalence between the human eye and the machine. The Automated Photography research project (2019–2021) is conducted by Milo Keller in the framework of the MA in Photography at ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne. It is a continuation of the research project Augmented Photography, equally conducted at ECAL (2016–2017), which aimed to question the mutability of the digital image, transformed both in its physical materiality and in its virtual expression. Automated Photography focuses on a specific aspect of these changes, which are omnipresent in contemporary visual culture: the automation of capture systems (smartphones, lidar, UAVs, satellites, space probes), the automation of image processing (machine vision analysis, facial recognition), and the increasing automation of image production and post-production (CGI, photogrammetry, artificial intelligence). Automated Photography has a dual objective. On the one hand, it plans to develop a critical theory of the automated image, in order to confront the students of the MA in Photography with its multiple implications (social, political, technical and aesthetic). On the other hand, it proposes to respond to the profound changes in the photographic profession, which must constantly adapt to technological developments. By combining an analytical and a theoretical perspective with considerations resulting from the practical experiences with these technical devices, the project aims to take advantage of the crossroads of these different fields. The synthesis is based on a practical process by applying these technologies, on an aesthetic outlook by analysing the visual qualities of these devices and their creative potential, and on a theoretical approach by assessing the practical results in their cultural, social and political context.Main applicantECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne (project leader)Research team (researcher) (researcher) (research assistant) (research assistant) (graphic designer)Visiting lecturersMarco de Mutiis Simone C. Hans Emmeneger - Fondation de l Hermitage During the retrospective organized by the Hermitage Foundation, photography students from ECAL/École cantonale d art de Lausanne pay tribute to this little-known artist. Without having seen his works beforehand, they explore his universe through the analysis of reproductions and some biographical elements. Throughout the semester, students delve into the mysteries of Emmenegger s work, pondering what his paintings could reveal under an X-ray scanner or how he would have used photography if given the opportunity. They employ contemporary techniques such as analog and digital photography, video, and 3D software to offer personal and poetic interpretations of his work. Their creations, presented as part of the retrospective, provide fresh perspectives on Emmenegger s oeuvre and invite viewers to discover this mysterious artist through the eyes of ECAL students. Exhibition at the Fondation de l Hermitage, Lausanne June 25 to October 31, 2021

Carhartt WIP × ECAL Earlier this year, Carhartt WIP (for Work in Progress) teamed up with ECAL, inviting Bachelor Photography students to interpret in their own way some of the emblematic pieces of the American clothing brand, which develops its own collections from the original Carhartt work clothes. The students, led by art director Nicolas Poillot, produced an editorial report, which was included in the latest issue of "WIP Magazine" published by Carhartt WIP and some of whose images will be exhibited at the ECAL on the occasion of the launch of this book.

Charlotte Therre – Coppia Prix Manufacture De Bethune This project is a study of shapes inspired by the world of Swiss watchmaking and mechanical arts and, more particularly, the precision that certain machining techniques can achieve. The aesthetics of the pieces come directly from the research of explored compositions and the resulting assembly cut-outs. The four pairs of jewellery are designed to be worn separately and are worn intuitively and non-invasively. The production combines both companies and craftspeople specialised in the field of jewellery. therrecharlotte@gmail.com https://www.tiel.ch

Seungkyun Hong – Mirage “Mirage” is a series of surrealistic mirrors designed to depict the various aspects of a person s personality. Different geometries made from the angles between two reflective surfaces and a horizontal plane symbolise the varied characters of each person. At the same time, the obtuse angles enable viewers to get an overall view of the object placed on the plane. info@carsonhong.com https://www.carsonhong.com The gradient mirror effect achieved by screen printing dramatically underlines the illusory floating shape. In this way, “Mirage” provides a whimsical vision through a combination of reflection and transparency.

Nayoung Kim – The Form Between Dog and Wolf This project raises the fundamental question of the relationship between what (we think) we see and what (we think) we know about the reading process and type design. By revealing ambiguous “grey areas” that lie halfway between two characters, it ironically questions what makes an “a” an “a”, a “b” a “b”, etc. Hence, a single “grey” character can be used to represent several letters at the same time, demonstrating the gradual abstraction of the letterforms and putting us in a position where we are no longer sure about what we are reading and what we know. doodlerkim@gmail.com https://nayokim.com

Benoît Brun – Karak “A first cut into the sheet… There s no turning back now. It s like choreography. I draw a curve, turn the sheet and continue in the opposite direction. Wow! An interplay of characters and counters appears as if I was creating the yin and yang sign! Well, let me continue back to my first cut. Hmm on reflection, this ‘a looks like a large fellow leaning forward and looking at his belly…” "Karak" is a typeface composed of five styles, which are the result of original material experimentation. It is a journey that recalls the innocence and creative impulse of our youthful days. hello@benoitbrun.com www.benoitbrun.com

Ketsia Stocker – Europa (production) Pedro, working in Switzerland, must take one cow to the slaughterhouse at the same time his mother dies in Spain. ketsia.stocker@gmail.com Fiction / 26min Synopsis Pedro, a Spanish worker, lives far from the world on his employer s farm in Switzerland. His mother is in hospital in Spain. Before leaving he has to do one last job: take one of his boss s cows, Europa, to the slaughterhouse. While trying to contact his brother Pedro has a car accident and arrives late to deliver the cow. At that moment, his brother calls him to tell him that his mother has died. His world collapses and he begins a journey in which his only companion will be this cow, next to which he will start to accept the loss. Student s statement As my major is Production, my diploma project was to produce a short film. Drawn by the film project of filmmaker Lucas Rubio, I decided to work together with him. I assisted him in the development of the scenario as well as in the preparation for shooting, selecting sets and the film crew. We had to overcome a few challenges during shooting: the weather conditions made logistics difficult and the cow, a central character, required special attention, adding more constraints to the project.

Sarah Rathgeb – Stray (direction) Joana has just moved in with her boyfriend and her dog Boris. This is an important step in their relationship, a life-changing step.In their new apartment they have everything they need for their future together: except a mattress. sarah.rathgeb@hotmail.com Fiction / 17min Synopsis Joana (30) has just moved in with her boyfriend Timo and their dog Boris. It s an important step in a relationship, a life-changing step. In their new apartmentthey have everything they need: exept a matress. Joana decides to go out and buy one. Confronted with the choice of a new mattress, doubts arise. Joana is no longer sure what she really wants. She begins to have doubts about her decision, her relationship and the world around her. Moments later, she s sitting in the delivery truck with her dog and Antonio, the mattress salesman. Joana doesn t seem to be in a hurry to get home. As it turns out, Antonio doesn t seem to be in a hurry either. He also finds himself facing a major change in his life. His mattress shop is about to close and his future also seems to be full of doubts and uncertainties. Little by little, both of them realize the similarities of their situation. They both find themselves at a point in their lives where they don t know what to do. But if they don t know what to do or where they want to go, one thing unites them, following the dog s example, they will follow their instincts. Student s statement The universe depicted in the film is an absurd one that reveals how we can feel like strangers in the world we live in. We feel humankind s constant plight, torn between hope and despair. The characters run away from all their problems in their own way and avoid getting involved in other people s problems. Existential crises are a central theme of our time. Nowadays, there is constant doubt about the possibility of establishing any meaningful relationship with the world around us.

Maya Bellier – Strike the Pose In performing arts, there is often, by convention, some distance, an invisible screen that separates the audience from the actors in the performance. Yet these respective positions have changed over time. Bauhaus artists actually aimed for total theatre, where the entire venue would be the stage. Strike the Pose is a participatory VR experience that begins from the moment we wait. A re-interpretation of Oskar Schlemmer s “Triadic Ballet”, this complete and inclusive work invites all participants to enter through their acting into a total composition, both physical and digital.

Leila Farra – Traces “Traces” is a collection of paintbrushes made out of rattan and horsehair. The idea behind this research was to experiment with the tools. Movement, the design of the handle and the hair position influenced the result. The first tests on paper led to experiments on fabric, resulting in a series of painted textiles whose patterns stem directly from the brushstrokes. This project enabled me to immerse myself into two ancestral crafts, wickerwork and paintbrush manufacturing, which I was then able to merge to create a collection between art and design.

Nikita Merlini – Rondinella Staying with her mother after the fire, Sofia dreams of freedom. But the smell of smoke doesn t leave.. Fiction / 24 min / Mention Very good Synopsis After their house burns down, 18-year-old Sofia and her mother Carla have to live together in a small room at « The Little Swallow Hotel ». Sofia explores the building and meets new inspiring people. A thousand opportunities seem to open up for her. Carla, on the other hand, has to get used to the idea of her daughter leaving. In this closed-door environment, mother and daughter try to find a new balance in their relationship. Comment A mother and her daughter in a hotel room, a few meters from what was their house... gone up in smoke, taking their common past with them. The film, like a parenthesis in this place of transit that is "La Rondinella", where strangers meet and make memories, spaces of intimacy, a place where Sofia and her mother seek to rebuild, with the fragility and awkwardness that characterize the love that binds a daughter to her mother. Nikita invests the enclosed space by the character, Sofia, formidably interpreted by Elena Stoll, who bewitches us by her presence, her face at the same time babyish and feminine, and with whom Nikita continues his collaboration. Sofia draws us into her boredom, her expectations, her encounters, her solitary wanderings, but above all into her impulse for life and renewal. For Rondinella is also the portrait of this youth, full of dreams and obstacles. Nikita Merlini directs a sensitive, delicate, hypnotic film that seizes time. This vulnerable time. The time of childhood. The time of emancipation. The time of suffocating, yet unfailing love. Elsa Amiel / Director

Coline Confort – Imperial (direction) At dawn, a cannon shatters the silence. The horses gallop across the beaten ground. Eva, 21, wants to join the Imperial HorseGuards, a historical reenactment of a Napoleonic regiment reserved for men. Documentary / 22 min Synopsis At dawn, a cannon shatters the silence. The horses gallop across the beaten ground. Eva, 21, wants to join the Imperial HorseGuards, a historical reenactment of a Napoleonic regiment reserved for men. In search of romance, she conceals her identity so that she can set her foot in the stirrup //(climb into the saddle), defying a 200-year-old ban. In this world of powder and smoke, Eva finally finds herself as she had always dreamed: ‘a handsome soldier beside a beautiful princess. Comment There are films that take a long time to be found, others that are born of an obviousness. One cannot say which is preferable. One cannot tell by looking at a film if its trajectory was eventful or peaceful. What counts is its impact on the present and the trace it leaves. Imperial has known versions of the script very different from the finished film. But these variants have nourished Coline s reflection, and this documentary carries within it all the others that were not made. Like layers. As if it had taken all these detours to finally manage to tell us a simple story, one of those that always thrill us, a story of desire and love. We can notice the great maturity in the management of the duration of the shots, the beauty of the frames and the attention given to the light. The almost feverish look at her character, while at the same time a great determination in the way she accompanies her. Eva s trajectory is simple and fluid in its accomplishment, and this simplicity (so difficult to achieve) is movingly beautiful. As can be the look of Eva on a young girl who is enough to put "a little glitter in her life". Laurent Larivière / Director

Fanny Mersmann – Le petit bout manquant rencontre le grand O Film animation, in my artistic work and research, was initiated by my interest in flip-books and children s books throughout art history. Inspired by stories like El Lissitzky s “About 2 Squares” and Niele Toroni s “L Histoire de Lapin Tur”, I decided to work on how to recount a painting or an artistic approach through children s stories.

Lorenz Noelle – Footwear – Be on the Way Driven by the motivation to try things out, to make things with my own hands and with the curiosity to explore a subject under many different angles, I carried out physical research on the topic of footwear. Shoes are objects that are extremely functional and closely related to human use but at the same time they create multiple expressions through their material, character and social identification. Process-oriented, every idea that came up was consistently realised – the strongest designs were developed further. mail@lorenz-noelle.com https://www.instagram.com/slippers_lab

Enabled by Design Enabled by Design is a joint research project between EPFL and ECAL, funded by Gebert Rüf Stiftung, which aims to foster collaboration between young entrepreneurs involved in technological projects and designers. Over recent years, EPFL has identified a genuine need for design expertise to successfully transform laboratory technologies into products that are available to users. Design is now a crucial resource in innovatory projects because of its user focus, strategic vision, iterative methodology and creativity. Collaboration with designers offers added value to products/services and allows the young entrepreneurs to reduce uncertainty, validate market opportunities and communicate a coherent and persuasive message to potential customers and investors. The research team has created a web-based platform to create links between entrepreneurs and designers seeking to collaborate on technological projects. The platform offers different design missions (UX/UI, industrial design, graphic design, video, animation and photography), displays the findings from a variety of collaborative projects and provides a series of tools and articles to facilitate collaboration. There is currently a design center within the EPFL Startup Unit which offers this service to start ups on an ongoing basis and seeks to transform emerging technologies into usable products.Main applicantsECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne (project leader) (project leader)Research teamIsabel Casado PartnerEPFL/Federal Polytechnic University of Lausanne, Enable programmePeriodmarch 2019 – december 2020Supported byECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne Gebert Rüf StiftungDisseminationPublication medium.com/enabled-by-design Website enabledbydesign.ch Press N.a., Supporting entrepreneurs from lab to market, in Startupticker.ch, 6 September 2019 Tiago Peres, How to build a good prototype, in Technologist.eu, 2 January 2019

Margot Sparkes – At Night There Is No Sun « Through various forms of projection, At Night There Is No Sun takes us into an almost enclosed mise-en-scene that reveals the contradictory emotions of a character stifled by the grip of a seemingly smooth and rectilinear urban environment. The fantasy of a promising lifestyle clashes with the emptiness of everyday life – a fake environment in which uncertainty, injunctions, detachment and pretence are interwoven.» The satire of an idealised society with mechanical behaviours, “At Night There Is No Sun” seeks to emphasise through nonsense, the irrationality of a world in disarray.

Sarah Coppet – A un autre soleil A un autre soleil addresses reflections on the transmission of land and stories, and on the relationship between France and the West Indies. The film relates a family story that takes place in the south of Martinique: the sale by one of the heirs of a major piece of land that leads to the family home being lost. Gathered in a stark environment in France, the West Indian characters take hold of this story and seek to tell it.

DESIGN MANAGEMENT FOR START-UPS The research project Design management for start-ups focused on the integration of design in innovation processes. The research project Design management for start-ups focused on the integration of design in innovation processes. Its objective was to promote the use of design within mainly technological start-ups and to create tools and methodologies to foster collaboration between designers and entrepreneurs. The approach took into account all design practices (industrial design, visual communication, media & interaction design, strategic design) and relied on the ecosystem of technological start-ups in the region. The study allowed for reflection at four levels: understanding the contribution of the different design disciplines in the innovation process; the analysis of the opportunities and constraints faced by entrepreneurs; the development of a set of tools for awareness raising and management of design-oriented innovation projects; supporting the strategic development of a start-up. The project enabled the development of a set of specific design management tools adapted to collaborations between technology start-ups and designers and to gather them on the website designstarterkit.chMain applicantsECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne (project leader)Research team (researcher) Noemie Délèze (Ra&D collaborator), HEIG-VD (interaction designer) (web developer) (photographer)PartnersNéode The Ark Innovaud Fri UpPeriodseptember 2018 – september 2020Supported byECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne Strategic fund of the University of Applied Sciences Western Switzerland (HES-SO RCDAV)DisseminationPublication Daphna Glaubert, Luc Bergeron, Le design comme accélérateur de projets technologiques en phase d incubation précoce, Sciences du Design, 2020 Website designstarterkit.ch Associated project innovationbydesignchallenge.ch

Sidonie Bays – Jeux Réunis “Jeux Réunis” is a graphic novel that leads us to explore a world in which platform cooperativism is the answer to all our basic needs. This illustrative project highlights the principles of a sharing economy through visual symbols and metaphors. Caught up in the game, the reader embodies a character who, following the discovery of a cooperativism platform, drifts off into a daydream. The aim is then to explore the areas of tension between fiction and everyday scenes in order to understand the ties between the inhabitants of Syn, the city of sharing.

Human Rights Photography Prize to a graduate of ECAL The Act On Your Future Foundation is very pleased to announce the names of the two winners of the fifth edition of the Human Rights Photography Prize on the theme "No Planet B: Human Rights in Times of Ecological Crisis": Lowena Poole for "Stop Time By Smashing Clocks" (RCA/Royal College of Art, London) and Romain Roucoules for "Global Solutions" (ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne) The Jury thus wished to reward two artists at the beginning of their careers with different profiles and approaches. The prizewinners receive a contribution of CHF 10,000 to be shared between them in order to enable them to produce an exhibition following on from the prize-winning projects. Their work as well as the projects of the other finalists will also be included in the retrospective book that the Foundation will publish to mark the five-year anniversary of the competition. The exhibition of the winning projects and the book will be presented at the Centre de la photographie Genève (CPG) from 27 October to 15 November 2020. Global Solutions par ECAL/Romain Roucoules Following the Brazilian presidential elections, the Amazonian rainforest, an environmental icon forgotten for some twenty years, is returning to the forefront and once again crystallises the general concerns. This project, presented in the form of an installation, brings together modern simulacres from different backgrounds. Distant consequences, close causes. Between collective memory and collective forgetfulness, Global Solutions questions the way we perceive distant realities, observed through the prism of technological tools. http://www.romainroucoules.com/

ECAL at Sculpture Garden, Geneva – Le cours de l eau,18.06–30.09.2020,Parc des Eaux-Vives, Geneva On the occasion of the Geneva Biennial: Sculpture Garden organized by artgenève and the MAMCO (curator of the exhibition: Balthazar Lovay) until 30 September 2020, students in 2nd year Bachelor Industrial Design from ECAL present a Bisse project in the Parc des Eaux-Vives. No doubt you have already walked, or dreamt of walking, along a Bisse in Canton Valais. A Bisse is a historical irrigation channel, many of which run through the idyllic Alpine landscape. Perhaps it was this romantic notion that inspired the National Exhibition of 1896 to recreate and display a “Mazot”, a typical wooden Alpine hut, albeit conveying a rather stereotypical idea of Switzerland. This larch wood hut, which could be considered as a forerunner of the circular economy, has been given a new lease of life for passersby to admire in the Eaux-Vives park. Is it a decorative object? Is it nostalgic? Or maybe folklore? The 2nd year Bachelor Indus-trial Design students at ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne, under the supervision of programme director Stéphane Halmaï-Voisard and their professor Adrien Rovero, have chosen to recreate the architecture of a traditional Bisse. This construction is also made of larch wood and includes several surprising features, starting with a viewing platform, a map of Lake Geneva, a water mirror and a simple bench to sit and contemplate a basic element: the flow of water. This project brings us closer to nature and makes sense in today s world where traditional values and local sourcing are being revived.
