Raw Project
Raw

Carlota Pons Pardo – Raw Inspired by the aesthetic essence of material boards during the process of a project, this research project intends to collect the essence of purity and simple forms to create a sculptural and functional object. The mirror is the central element, being the structure and the base, which in itself creates direct interaction between the materials through reflection and gives meaning to the whole. Thanks to the verticality, the balance and tension of the materials are questioned, which is reinforced by a flexible element that encompasses and adds dynamism to the composition. This project is designed as a sculptural object without pretending to be defined by a clear function. It is a retrospective approach to the use of raw material waste, their second life and their play in space.

Το Ρόδι – The Pomegranate Project
Το Ρόδι – The Pomegranate

Sofia Papaefthymiou – Το Ρόδι – The Pomegranate « Being half-Cypriot half-Swiss, I somehow felt the need to understand my relationship to the territory, borders, exile and my shared origins. Το Ρόδι–The Pomegranate is a short film that has become a tool for exploration and deconstruction, bringing the geopolitical conflicts of my country up to the level of my own conflicts. This project is also a space where I can dream freely of other places, my own island – the reflections of my desires. Unable to reach this homeland, I try to grasp what I do not have, to reproduce the sensations that I experienced there. I collect archives, I commission images. I bring my female body, which I appropriate and re-appropriate through various representations, back to its origin, to find my place and speak up again.»

Jiko Project
Jiko

Julien Lindt – Jiko Jiko is an outdoor wood-burning oven. It is inspired by African clay ovens known for their high efficiency in burning wood, which therefore have low CO2 emissions. I wanted to bring this object into our way of life, in our countries.  Domestic cooking is getting increasingly poor; I think we have lost the taste for cooking, especially with fire, which I think is the most beautiful and delicious way to cook food. Jiko is more ecological and just as efficient as our high-tech kitchens. Because of its modularity, it is easy to use and allows for a wide variety of cooking methods. In addition, its multi-directional shape allows people to gather together and create a friendly atmosphere.

S-Board Project
S-Board

Elie Eliez – S-Board The S-Board is a small skateboard made of recycled plastic, designed to be directly produced on a small scale. It is a minimalist means of transport that I have been developing for several years. Perfectly adapted to the urban environment and travel, it has several advantages. It can be stored in a backpack or hand luggage, it takes up very little space on a bus and it allows you to juggle between public transport and pavements. The proximity of the axles makes it possible to rotate within a very small radius in order to slalom easily or dodge an obstacle over a short distance. Its thickness makes it an extremely solid object. Lightweight, it is cost-effective in terms of materials and offers a practical means of transport.

The Heiresses Project
The Heiresses

Avril Lehmann – The Heiresses Luna returns to the family home where still lives her younger sister, Diana. Diana has been living alone in this large, dilapidated house since the death of their father. Fiction / 15 min Synopsis Luna returns to the family house where still lives her sister, Diana. She has been living alone in this large, dilapidated house since the death of their father. If Luna left the house to free herself from the past, Diana, on the other hand, refuses to turn the page. No words can bring the sisters together. Therefore they decide to settle their dispute through a family tradition: a hunt. Comment The starting point of the project was a desire to tell a story between two sisters. Having always worked with my own sister, this time I wanted to reflect on the dynamics of our relationship. When the writing began, reality inevitably collided with the creation of the characters and the two protagonists bore a striking resemblance to my sister and me. So, after thinking long and hard about casting, I decided to challenge myself to play one of the two roles. This experience allowed me to confront the characters from another angle than the one of director and to discover the rudiments of the actor s work. Being a ghost Project
Being a ghost

Sebastián Friedmann – Being a ghost Serge discovers what being a ghost is like but Martial, an old spirit, prevents him from having fun. Fiction / 19 min Synopsis An encounter between two ghosts in a spa. Serge realizes what has happened to him. Martial disapproves of this young rebel who s disrupting his normal routine. Will they be able to get along ? Comment Through the directing process and the work of the actors, I wanted to create the most dynamic ghost characters possible. When Serge, the protagonist, discovers his death, he does not react as one would expect. He is happy: he is freed from the gaze of others and seems to enjoy his newfound freedom. Unfortunately for him, his emancipation is not to the liking of Martial, the spirit of an old man who tries to prevent him from stepping out of line. The extraordinary thing about a fictional work is that it confronts us with situations that remind us of our own existence without having to experience them in real life. What if I was dead? How would I react? What would I miss the most? In the meantime, we might as well enjoy what we have. Sebastián Friedmann

Balthazar and Madalena Project
Balthazar and Madalena

Gabriel Colban – Balthazar and Madalena In the midst of an aerobatic flight, a canonball woman meets a trapeze artist. A haunted love story. Fiction / 21 min Synopsis At Circus Rainor, Madalena, the canonball woman who will kick off the reopening ceremony in a few days, is extremely anxious. Ever since the accidental death of Diego, the famous trapeze artist, she believes that her act is the target of a curse. During her last rehearsal - as she finds herself propelled into the air - she meets the eyes of Balthazar, the new trapeze artist. Time stops. A haunted love story. Commentaire For this project, it was very important to find a form of musicality, a movement that runs through the film, that is first and foremost driven by the real pleasure of filmmaking. Building a fluctuating atmosphere and mystery, colourful settings and precise details. Energy that links the characters and participates, in a playful and sensory way, in developing a form of magic in a fake universe. Gabriel Colban

Fever Project
Fever

Matias Carlier – Fever Two young skateboarders decide to go to a party, their evening gets complicated. Fiction / 22 min Synopsis La fièvre is a short fiction film about two young skateboarders, Aleister and Joana, who will try to declare their love for each other throughout the night. This declaration is put to the test by the different obstacles they meet on their way, leading them to wander the streets of Lausanne until the early morning. Comment For this project, I wanted to work with non-professional actors in order to anchor the fiction in contemporary reality, to film young people in their daily lives as teenagers, without distorting them. The idea was not to fantasise about a geographical or temporal elsewhere, but to anchor the characters journey in the here and now. Matias Carlier

Being a ghost (Editing) Project
Being a ghost (Editing)

Axel Bezençon – Being a ghost (Editing) Serge discovers what being a ghost is like but Martial, an old spirit, prevents him from having fun. Fiction / 19 min Comment I edited the short film Une vie de fantôme by Sebastian Friedmann. Working closely together, we structured the film to trace the trajectory of its main character, Serge, a young adult who is happy to be the ghost of the thermal baths where he worked when he was alive, but who soon becomes disillusioned, especially when he meets Martial, an old ghost who has been haunting the place for years. “Do, undo, do again, do something else. But always move towards the film that has been dreamed of.” This was our mantra. The same goes for my dissertation, which, through interviews with personalities from the Swiss film industry, discusses the importance of dramaturgy in editing and the following question: why are editors generally not recognised as authors? Axel Bezençon

Insight Project
Insight

Steven Rüthy – Insight « Do we still see everything that happens around us ? Insight is a short film set in an architectural social housing complex in Bümpliz-Bern, which offers a unique perspective of the world as viewed by an elderly couple living in the Holenacker district on the outskirts of the Swiss capital. In this project I confront the viewer with a way of life which for us as visual artists and most likely for many others, is unimaginable. I question the spatial notion of a secure/safe space and how it is used and therefore perceived from an external point of view, my own. Insight therefore consists of stepping into the shoes of someone who has blurred vision, understanding what it is like and how it affects the way you live.»

Dehors (Photography) Project
Dehors (Photography)

Michaela Theus – Dehors (Photography) It is raining in the park. Natacha and her son Eli are looking for a shelter for the night. Walter wanders alone with his guitar. Fiction / 23 mn Synopsis The rain wets the park where Eli is playing alone. Drops fall on Natacha s embarrassed face as she searches through her phone book for a solution. Not far away, Walter is wandering alone. The sound of his guitar travels up to the mother and child who are seeking shelter for the night. The hostility of the outside world, the fear of being left behind and an encounter, that of a mother and child who have recently become homeless with an outsider: for a moment, in all their modesty, they inspire us with a semblance of a blended family. An actress, a child, a bohemian. Unstable weather, a lot of improvisation and flexibility. A lesson in freedom, simplicity and letting go. For me, as for others, the experience of a project flirting with the documentary was like a powerful rite of passage. Student s comment The film Dehors was a journey that brought me and my collaborator, friend and director Charlène Girel closer than ever. Between planning and improvisation, depth and flight, emotional chaos and creative release, we went through all the phases. We never left the boat: I remained  on board as cinematographer, as high as the waves breaking on the deck, and we did our best to keep the sails oriented towards the vision of the filmmaker. Trust and fascination for the director became essential components to be able to put our hearts into a project. Thanks to all those who helped us stay on course. The birth of this film was not easy, but it was only the beginning of many journeys into unknown waters. Michaela Theus

ECAL celebrates its 200th anniversary (1821-2021)

ECAL celebrates its 200th anniversary (1821-2021),01.09.2021–30.04.2022,Various locations To mark this 200th anniversary, we are pleased to invite you to a varied programme of activities and events in Switzerland and internationally, highlighting contemporary issues and themes that lie at the core of ECAL s various disciplines, thus offering a reflection on the contribution of art and design to society. ECAL is delighted to celebrate its 200th anniversary (1821-2021)! In 1821, a decree of the Grand Council of the Canton of Vaud formalised the opening of the Ecole cantonale de dessin, housed in Cité-Devant near the Cathedral in Lausanne. Twenty years later, the school integrated the newly built Musée Arlaud, located in the city centre and which also bears the name of the first director of both institutions, Marc-Louis Arlaud. For almost 150 years, the establishment has had many personalities as directors, moved to various locations in the region and had different names, before finally settling on Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne in 1986. Since then, the acronym ECAL has become popular as the reputation of the institution has grown, and it is now considered one of the best art and design schools in the world thanks to the countless successes of its teaching staff, students and alumni. To mark this 200th anniversary, we are pleased to invite you to a varied programme of activities and events in Switzerland and internationally, highlighting contemporary issues and themes that lie at the core of ECAL s various disciplines, thus offering a reflection on the contribution of art and design to society. ECAL x MEHARI EDEN Project
ECAL x MEHARI EDEN

ECAL x MEHARI EDEN The 2CV Méhari Club Cassis has developed an electric version of the iconic Citroën released in 1968 : the EDEN. From its inception, this car was designed for summer sports and leisure activity. Our current renewed interest in outdoor activities together with electric technology makes this car particularly attractive. With this in mind, the 2nd-year BA students in Industrial Design, under the direction of Stéphane Halmaï-Voisard, Head of Programme, and designer Elric Petit, showcase a series of accessories for tomorrow s electric Méhari. A genuine “LEGO car”, the Méhari lent itself perfectly to being reinvented by ECAL s students : a steering wheel with a built-in Bluetooth speaker, a rowboat doubling as a roof for the ride towards your favourite boating spot, practical surfboard and bike racks, a ready-to-use picnic set hidden in the tailgate, a waterproof roof cover made from banana plants, or the backrest of the rear seat that converts into a side table are just some of products on display.

Excerpts from Master Type Design theses Project
Excerpts from Master Type Design theses

Excerpts from Master Type Design theses AUTHOR: Simona Alina Andone TITLE: The Aura of Type Design The Aura of Type Design stems from the necessity of creating a critical discourse around the type design discipline. In which cultural and social settings is type design embedded? This thesis explores some of the contexts in which type design manifests itself – from Instagram to institutions, exhibitions, archives, and so on. What effects do these manifestations have on perceptions about how type design works? ---- AUTHOR: Romain Tronchin TITLE: To be seen not read SUBTITLE: The formal expression of typography Without even being conscious of it, I have always been interested in typography and its shapes. When I was a kid, I was fascinated by the numbers on football shirts. Later, it was graffiti, with its illegible letters. Today, it is the typefaces of designers like Herb Lubalin, Jean Alessandrini or Zuzana Licko that awaken my interest. All these typefaces have one thing in common: they are typefaces that are not meant to be read, but seen. Their formal aspect comes first, before their functionality. So, we can see these expressive typefaces as images before considering them as tools. This sentence by Herb Lubalin sums up this phenomenon well: “Sometimes you sacrifice legibility to increase impact.” ---- AUTHOR: Marcel Saidov TITLE: The Telephone Directories of Total Design and Ladislas Mandel SUBTITLE: Modernist Internationalism and Cultural Identity By comparing the iconic phone book by Total Design with the typefaces and their application in telephone directories by Ladislas Mandel, I want to create a dialogue between traditionalism and modernism; internationalism and cultural identity. I will not only examine the differing design approaches, but also compare two opposing philosophies. In addition, I would like to investigate which kinds of technical knowledge gleaned from the design of telephone directories and their typefaces can still be of use today. By comparing two opposing ideologies of the past century, I will try to conduct a contemporary discourse on type and culture. ---- AUTHOR: Alberto Malossi TITLE: Extraordinary Gentleman SUBTITLE: The typefaces of Giovanni Mardersteig History is something that I have always been keenly interested in. Luckily, I found a way to channel it into my work, which I feel is very much based on historical awareness. Especially as a type designer, the saying “standing on the shoulders of giants” is something that I think about daily: I see my practice as bound to both enshrine the memory of those who came before me, and to build upon their work. That is why I felt a deep connection with the typefaces of Giovanni Mardersteig (1892-1977). His work was always aware of the past, while somehow completely contemporary. ---- AUTHOR: Paul Christ TITLE: Pixels, Geometry, Theosophy, Philosophy In the following thesis, I will be taking a deeper look at geometry, theosophy and the pixel in the oeuvre of JLM Lauweriks (1864–1932). At the same time, I will reflect on the relationship between mysticism, philosophy and geometry in contemporary design through an interview with Dimitri Bruni from NORM, while conducting a short investigation of Jurriaan Schrofer s work. ---- AUTHOR: Chiachi Chao TITLE: Type Design in the Zeitgeist Letters are shapes with intentions. A typeface is an instrument built to convey meanings and information. The design criteria for a typface are clear: it must facilitate the efficiency of the reading process, allowing the eyes to identify the image shape, then glide through the line as fast as possible. Since ‘reading and ‘seeing are two fundamentally different physical mechanisms, the functionality (readability and legibility) in types is always more important than the ‘style of letter-shapes given that text is meant for reading. Its form is determined by the condition in which the typeface intends to be applied. With this premise, type design draws a clear line between graphic design in which personal expression plays a significant role. ---- AUTHOR: Nicolas Bernklau TITLE: Critical Regionalism in Type Design SUBTITLE: A survey of moments in history when social, political and economic systems change in parallel with typography Typography is a substantial part of visual identities and thus a means of identification for countries, corporations and communities. Type can be used as a transporter of aims and values. It can provide orientation and a sense of purpose. Once you see a certain type connected to a particular era, style or area it immediately evokes certain feelings and tells you its narrative. It is a very powerful means. So on the one hand, whenever there is change, type can play a leading role in expressing this change and on the other hand, a new type can be introduced in order to cause change. Examples of such changes could be: A political ideology is associated with a certain style of type, a country switches its script from Arabic to Latin or a type design studio designs a multi-script typeface. All these changes are triggered by different intrinsic or extrinsic motivations and reasons: e.g. historical, economic, political, educational, aesthetic or modernisation reasons. In these cases type is used to embody these changes and socio-political shifts as a transporter of ideas and values. The thesis consists of three parts, the transition from Fraktur to roman, the world political topic of changing type through alphabet shifts as well as internationality in type design today with the topic of expansion. ---- AUTHOR: Benedetta Bovani TITLE: The role of intertitles SUBTITLE: From a typographic necessity to a means of expression Intertitles have been a topic of discussion throughout the more or less thirty years (1895–1930) in which they were largely used. When one would talk about these elements, it was usually to criticise them or to highlight their flaws. Indeed, intertitles were controversial. The use of the word, and especially the written word, in cinema – then a silent medium – was by most seen as unnecessary, even dangerous. Admitting that writing was necessary to the success of cinema was like admitting that silence was a deficit. Nevertheless, intertitles slowly became an essential element, that even today has left its trace in modern films. The goal of this master thesis is to investigate and map the use of intertitles. Starting from their inception, when they were just a typographic necessity, to their prime – when they played an active role in the narration of movies and represented a means of expression as important as picture itself. ---- AUTHOR: Anne Seseke TITLE: Barbara Radice & Fragments of Terrazzo (1988–1995) Ever since I discovered post-modernist objects, I have fostered an ambivalent relationship to them. Their shape, patterns and materials. The more I researched, the more I found interesting writings, interviews and a lot of lesser-known projects. I scraped the shiny, plastic, colourful surface and discovered thought-provoking reflections on society. In this master thesis I will approach my topic in a manner similar to the way in which Barbara Radice edited Terrazzo magazine (1988–1995): strong research roots tied together by a spiderweb of associations. ---- AUTHOR: Antonio D Elisiis TITLE: The Eldorado of Legibility SUBTITLE: Optical sizes, variable fonts and accessibility in the digital environment Designing aesthetically pleasing fonts that remain legible in various situations of use. Achieving this difficult balance has always been the ultimate goal in type design. Sought by punchcutters first, and later by the most modern type designers. These applied two fundamental practices to character design: optical size, and optical correction. I will analyse both practices and how they have evolved over time – especially with the change of various technologies (printing, information support and visualisation, tools that allow the design of characters, etc.). I will also analyse how optical corrections were applied, and why. ---- AUTHOR: Lucile Billot TITLE: Colophons etc. SUBTITLE: A collection of colophons, from medieval to contemporary, and the related stories they tell This master thesis focuses on the narratives of colophons, and some related paratextual devices, such as design notes, acknowledgements etc. The thesis builds bridges between different periods, highlighting (for example) relationships between medieval and contemporary colophons. At first sight, colophons seem to be a quite dry part of any book, as they only deal with credits. But they are not simply the ‘finishing stroke of a book. They also give clues and backdrops, both about the book itself (its content) and its context (in terms of design / production / circulation). This thesis explores the colophons evolution and transformations, as well as the contextual stories that are hidden in them, and the effect they can have on our understanding of a book.

Real Facts Project
Real Facts

Real Facts A collection of neophyte views on current agriculture through the prism of design. Invited by the Musée des Arts Décoratifs et du Design de Bordeaux (madd-bordeaux), second-year Bachelor of Industrial Design students at ECAL, under the guidance of designers Erwan Bouroullec and Adrien Rovero, have given form to their observations and questions about the current agricultural landscape. "Real Facts" is a collection of neophyte points of view on current agriculture, through the prism of design. This project was created at the initiative of Constance Rubini, director of the madd-bordeaux, on the occasion of the exhibition "Paysans designers, un art du vivant" at the Musée des Arts décoratifs et du Design de Bordeaux (madd-bordeaux) presented from 14 July 2021 to 17 January 2022. With the precious support of the Association vaudoise de promotion des métiers de la terre Prométerre, and in the framework of the Summer University programme of the Direction générale de l enseignement supérieur (DGES) - Canton de Vaud.

"Real Facts" exhibition at madd-bordeaux,14.07.2021–17.01.2022,madd-bordeaux At the invitation of the musée des Arts décoratifs et du Design de Bordeaux (madd-bordeaux), the 2nd year Bachelor Industrial Design students from ECAL, under the guidance of designers Erwan Bouroullec and Adrien Rovero, have given form to their observations and questions about the current agricultural situation. REAL FACTS – Paysans designers, un art du vivant ECAL × madd-bordeaux 14.7.2021—17.1.2022 "At the very beginning of our discussions with Constance Rubini, director of madd-bordeaux, we expressed the fact that we are not specialists. However, what is interesting about agriculture is that everyone has an image of it, and in a way everyone as a citizen has a certain point of view about how productive nature should be conducted. But in the end, most of the time, our understanding of what actually happens on a farm is non-existent or patchy," explains Erwan Bouroullec. The intention behind "Real Facts" was to use design and installations to bring to light a number of "facts" and testimonies, allowing us to question the reality of today s agriculture: women are 33% represented in the profession; farmers take a maximum of one week s holiday per year; there are more than a hundred certifications in France; agriculture is the world s 2nd largest market for service robotics; in France, one out of four fruits consumed is tropical; a mushroom doubles in size every 24 hours, etc... Students Dario Aguet, Masen Al-Saghir, Fanny Bichet, Louis Bosnjak, Marine Bouvard, Frederik Buchmann, Paul Carluy, Emma Casella, Yann Cistac, Alexandre Desarzens, Léon Félix, Guillaume Gindrat, Gabriel Hafner, Lucie Herter, Camila Hidalgo, Nima Kaufmann, Anaïs Lehmann, Timothée Lehmann, Kim Lissy, Alexandre Margueron, Lirjeta Maxhuni, Stéphane Mischler, Alex Nguyen, Jillian Reichlin, Anaïs Rochat, Theodore Simon, Constance Thiessoz, Sophie Van Der Bij, Laure Wasser ----- This project was made at the invitation of Constance Rubini, director of the madd-bordeaux, on the occasion of the exhibition "Paysans designers, un art du vivant" at the Musée des Arts décoratifs et du Design de Bordeaux (madd-bordeaux) presented from 14 July 2021 to 17 January 2022. Collaboration with Hermès – 2021 Project
Collaboration with Hermès – 2021

Collaboration with Hermès – 2021 For this first collaboration with the department Hermès Maison, the students worked on the theme of the mirror, under the direction of designer Sabine Marcelis. L illusioniste Sarah Rémy L illusioniste is a game of lines. A full mirror in the front, it reveals itself by changing ones perspective. From the side, one can discover coloured lines reminiscent of jumping bars, helmets and blankets, the lines of the roofs of Paris, the lines of Hermès. Its reflections make L illusioniste a simple object at first glance and yet surprising. Miroir Ailé Ricardo Beira This object is strongly inspired by equestrian products, which are the basis of Hermès history. The symbiotic interaction between rigid and flexible elements, creates an integrated whole that functions like biological systems, where one element reinforces the other, allowing both stability and movement. This spatial organisation forms a continuous field of tensions and compressions in constant balance, in a play of forces that defies gravity. As a result, the mirror appears to be lighter and levitates above the base, yet can be manipulated freely. Miroir à Courroie Maxime Zenderoudi Suspended lightly, this object intrigues with its large oblique loop, yet reveals a reflection that is perfectly true to life. The leather strap has a function that dictates its course. It envelops the mirror in a continuous movement, sometimes supporting, sometimes balancing and sometimes protecting it. The mirrored glass plays with appearances by borrowing its finishes from leather craftsmanship, with perforations and hand finished edges in a contrasting colour. Made integral by means of two straps, the elegant fluidity of the whole echoes the House s emblematic double-turn bracelets. Phi[Φ] Yosuke Shimano Mirrors reflect the world with light as it is. They look like they have everything, but they can also be seen as empty objects with no will. This is why I have called this mirror Phi[Φ] (group of emptiness). Phi[Φ] completes the loop handle through its reflection with playful, as if hanging in space, reconnecting you with your reflection. Both sides of the mirror are identical. This gives an ele- ment of playfulness inviting you to interact with it. Style H Chen-Ta Hsieh Inspired by the works of the De Stijl art movement, this piece attempts to introduce contemporary art into our daily lives in the form of a mirror. In line with the idea of a segmented geometric composition, functional sculpture and simplicity, I try to bring a new interpretation to Hermès while remaining in line with the visual and material direction of the brand. The extension of the marquetry language at the back creates the frame of the mirror. Part of the marquetry on the back can be detached to become a support for the mirror. The chamfer of the support gives the mirror a perfect angle for reflection. Aether Salman Rouhani This object gives the user a new perspective on their environment and allows them to play with perception. This wall mirror allows the user to see their whole body without the need for a large standing mirror.

Excerpts from Master Photography theses Project
Excerpts from Master Photography theses

Excerpts from Master Photography theses AUTHOR: Sara Bastai TITLE: How to build a collective memory in the digital realm? SUBTITLE: Depicting humankind through methods of preservation It seems, sometimes, like today s main focus of interest lies in how future societies will perceive us. The traces we might leave behind can significantly impact the history and interpretation of our current present. Can we rely on digital preservation? What should we document for the future? How can we represent and preserve society in the 21st century without being reduced to mere computational information processing? This master thesis is a speculative reflection on our current and past methods of preservation of social history. ------ AUTHOR: Maeva Bosko TITLE: Dream worlds SUBTITLE: What happens when we re asleep? Since my early childhood, I have dreamt a lot. Sweet, pleasant or strange dreams, nightmares, sometimes even lucid dreams. Night is when I escape to these virtual worlds. But what are these worlds? Why are they so different from my ordinary waking world? I ve even gotten to the point, on various occasions, when I preferred these dream states to my everyday reality. This is a research project into the world of dreams as an attempt to decode the unconsciousness in relation to the virtual universe and reality we experience at night. ------ AUTHOR: Natalie Maximova TITLE: Walking the landscape, in video games With a focus on landscape representation in video games called “walking simulators”, this thesis attempts to uncover questions related to a complex and ambiguous notion of landscape, from its original conception to today. During my research, I applied the interpretive approach of “reading” and decoding landscapes that have been used by geographers, as well as sociologists, artists and historians. Video game landscapes could be thought of as a system consisting of natural, man-made and cultural forces which can be identified and studied. The landscape in this case plays as a medium that combines, holds and channels these forces. If video game environments exist as part of our culture, what kind of connections do these virtual spaces form? This thesis tries to uncover processes behind the construction of the “natural” in video game environments. ------ AUTHOR: Joanna Wierzbicka TITLE: Why should our bodies end at the skin? SUBTITLE: Rethinking bodily matter beyond a humanist imagination This thesis follows the turn to matter within the fields of body studies, posthuman feminist theory, and new materialism in order to rethink the definition of what a body is and, more importantly, what a body can do. The main research objective is to find out how through questioning the definition of a body and the use of metaphorical thinking in this process, we can establish a more ethical living ground among other bodies. ------ AUTHOR: Olivia Wünsche TITLE: Myths shape reality After having lived a deeply transformative psychedelic experience, all previously held beliefs and perceptions which conditioned my relationship to the surrounding reality, suddenly broke free from the prison of mental programming and limited awareness. Different aspects of this internal change manifested through an almost visceral connection to the Earth. I started to direct my attention towards subjects revolving around environmental and humanitarian crisis, simultaneously wanting to find the cause that has led to our current state of separateness, in which we distance ourselves from others and from nature. I understood quite rapidly that socio-political problem-solving is undoubtedly urgent and indispensable, however it remains shallow and incomplete by treating symptoms without curing the cause. ------ AUTHOR: Zhang Manqin TITLE: A diamond-shaped egg This master thesis is based on different tools that can be used to explore the power of memory. Closely related to the author s “I m not a loner” photo installation, this research project combines fictional writing with the documentary approach of a diary. ECAL x MEHARI EDEN - Hyères Design Parade

ECAL x MEHARI EDEN - Hyères Design Parade A series of accessories that will make up the electric Mehari of tomorrow. The 2CV Mehari Club Cassis has developed an electric version of the iconic Citroën car released in 1968: the EDEN. From the outset, this car was intended for summer sports and leisure activities. Today, our renewed interest in outdoor activities combined with electric technology makes this vehicle all the more attractive. With this in mind, the 2nd year Bachelor of Industrial Design students, under the direction of designer Elric Petit, are proposing a series of accessories that will make up the electric Mehari of tomorrow. This project was realized in partnership with the 2CV Mehari Club Cassis, at the initiative of Massilia.design and Nathalie Dewez, with the precious support of Bananatex® and the Hyères Design Parade Festival.

ECAL x MEHARI EDEN at Design Parade Festival Event
ECAL x MEHARI EDEN at Design Parade Festival

ECAL x MEHARI EDEN at Design Parade Festival,25–27.06.2021,Villa Noailles, Hyères On the occasion of the Design Parade Festival in Hyères from 25 to 27 June 2021, ECAL presents the "ECAL x MEHARI EDEN" project. The 2CV Méhari Club Cassis has developed an electric version of the iconic Citroën released in 1968: the EDEN. From its inception, this car was designed for summer sports and leisure activity. Our current renewed interest in outdoor activities together with electric technology makes this car particularly attractive. With this in mind, the 2nd-year Bachelor students in Industrial Design at ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne, under the direction of Stéphane Halmaï-Voisard, Head of Programme, and designer Elric Petit, showcase a series of accessories for tomorrow s electric Méhari. A genuine “LEGO car”, the Méhari lent itself perfectly to being reinvented by ECAL s students: a steering wheel with a built-in Bluetooth speaker, a rowboat doubling as a roof for the ride towards your favourite boating spot, practical surfboard and bike racks, a ready-to-use picnic set hidden in the tailgate, a waterproof roof cover made from banana plants, or the backrest of the rear seat that converts into a side table are just some of products on display. After a stopover in Lausanne at the hands of the students, the EDEN returns to its stamping ground equipped with its new functions and heads for Villa Noailles for the 15thDesign Parade Festival. From 28 June, the car and its accessories will be on display in the showroom of the 2CV Méhari Club in Cassis until 29 October 2021. ----- This project was carried out in partnership with the 2CV Méhari Club Cassis and initiated by Massilia.design and Nathalie Dewez with the valuable support of Bananatex® and the Design Parade Hyères Festival. As part of the Summer University programme of the Board of Higher Education(DGES) – State of Vaud.

"ECAL Digital Market" in the V&A collection Event
"ECAL Digital Market" in the V&A collection

"ECAL Digital Market" in the V&A collection,21.06.2021,Victoria and Albert Museum, London The Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) – the world s leading museum of art, design and performance based in London – presents  Design 1900 – Now, a new permanent gallery exploring how design shapes and is shaped by how we live, work, travel, communicate and consume. As part of the gallery, new acquisitions will go on display, including the ECAL Digital Market  project by ECAL. Opening 19 June 2021, the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) – the world s leading museum of art, design and performance based in London – presents Design 1900 – Now, a new permanent gallery exploring how design shapes and is shaped by how we live, work, travel, communicate and consume. Housed within the museum s former 20th Century Gallery, this newly curated space brings together leading design objects alongside the first redisplay of V&A s celebrated "Rapid Response Collecting" programme since its founding in 2014. As part of the gallery, new acquisitions will go on display, including the ECAL Digital Market project by ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne. “We are delighted to bring the ECAL Digital Market project into the V&As collection of digital and product design,” says Corinna Gardner, Senior Curator of Design and Digital at the V&A. “We have an established history of acquiring 3D printed designs and this project has the ability to speak to the future of this exciting discipline.” In partnership with the 3D printing company Formlabs, the idea of this project is to present digital manufacturing as an industrial production tool thanks to a print farm composed of numerous machines printing the same pieces simultaneously. Imagined by Camille Blin, Head of the Master Product Design, and Christophe Guberan, ECAL tutor, ECAL Digital Market offers functional and well-designed everyday objects, created by Master Product Design students as well as by a selection of ECAL-related designers (faculty members and alumni). Digital files of the objects can also be purchased online: www.ecal-digital-market.ch As part of the “Automation & Labour” thematic within the exhibition at the V&A, ECAL Digital Market was initially created for the Milan Design Week 2018. After its success in Italy, the project was presented at the Vitra Design Museum in Weil am Rhein, at CIBONE Tokyo and already at the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) in London. “We first brought this project to the V&A as part part of a London Design Festival display,” says Johanna Agerman Ross, Curator of Furniture and Product Design at the V&A. “It s great to see the work of both early career and established designers now joining the collection and fitting that it s now featured in the new Design 1900-Now gallery.” For ECAL Director Alexis Georgacopoulos: “It is very rewarding for both teachers and students to see their work become part of such a prestigious museum collection. It confirms us in our choices and motivates us to push the boundaries even further.“ Victoria and Albert Museum Cromwell Road London, SW7 2RL www.vam.ac.uk

The Sources of Jan Tschichold’s The New Typography Project
The Sources of Jan Tschichold’s The New Typography

The Sources of Jan Tschichold s The New Typography Jan Tschichold s essay Die neue Typographie (The New Typography, 1928) is a game-changing book, acclaimed as the curtain raiser of modern graphic design. While it takes the form of a critical essay and an operative manual, its sources have been understudied because of their difficult identification. This project aims to reconstruct the body of sources that Tschichold drew on to understand the broader cultural context of the book, through an international conference on its impact and a travelling exhibition. The year 2018 marked the 90th anniversary of the publication of Jan Tschichold s Die neue Typographie (The New Typography). After almost a century, Tschichold s game-changing book, together with the typographic movement that stemmed from it, still attracts the interest and curiosity of graphic design historians and practitioners. The book has entered the historiographical canon and its appeal has not faded. Yet, The New Typography is a victim of its own success: it enjoys the benefits of canonisation, while suffering some side effects. Having reached an almost mythical status, The New Typography is often taken for granted and rarely questioned or closely scrutinised. This paradox is the starting point of the present research project. Jan Tschichold (Leipzig 1902 – Locarno 1974) was a German-born, Swiss-naturalised typographer, type and book designer, teacher, typography theorist and critic. In the 1920s he became one of the leaders of the New Typography movement. His conversion to the Modernist cause was mediated by the Bauhaus lesson. This was learnt first through a visit to the Bauhaus exhibition in Weimar in the summer of 1923, and encouraged in the following years through acquaintance and friendship with key exponents of the Modernist movement such as László Moholy-Nagy and El Lissitzky. With the Nazis rise to power in 1933, Tschichold escaped Germany and took refuge in Switzerland, where he spent the rest of his life with the exception of two stays in England, in 1937 and between 1947 and 1949. Published in Berlin in 1928, Tschichold s The New Typography is a manifesto. It follows an earlier statement published in October 1925 in a special issue of the trade magazine Typographische Mitteilungen, entitled “Elementare Typographie.” It was intended as a textbook for graphic designers, printers, typesetters and typographers. The term “New Typography” was first used by László Moholy-Nagy in the Bauhaus exhibition catalogue of 1923. The New Typography, also known as “elementary” or “functional” typography, is the manifestation of Modernism in graphic design and printed communication. Its rules included the privilege for sans-serif typefaces, non-centred page layouts, photography and photomontage, standardised paper sizes, and the active use of white space. After the war, Tschichold gradually distanced himself from the New Typography. He condemned the rigidity of the movement from both a political-moral and a strictly typo- graphical perspective. The research project relies on the hypothesis that, despite being broadly considered a pivotal and game-changing book that paved the way to modern graphic design, The New Typography deserves further and closer scrutiny. Building on the hypothesis that bibliographic sources are among the so-far overlooked and neglected aspects of The New Typography which are waiting to be identified, discussed and contextualised, the research project employs them as a means to open the black box in which Tschichold s book has been kept until now. Once the bibliographical references (books, magazines, grey literature) have been identified, the project investigates what they can tell us about the lineage in which The New Typography was rooted and the kind of discourses and networks it stemmed from. The focus on the sources aims to provide a more complex alternative to the worn-out rhetoric of the “pioneers” of graphic design.Main applicantECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne Matthieu Cortat Davide FornariResearch teamChiara Barbieri Martin SøbergPeriodMay 2019 – June 2021Supported byECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne HES–SO, Fonds stratégique RCDAVDisseminationWebsite die-neue-bibliographie.ch Conference Jan Tschichold s The New Typography: Its Roots and Impact on National Scenes, 26 April 2023, ECAL/École cantonale d art de Lausanne

Jean-Jacques Rousseau inspires the ECAL/HEAD Master in Cinema

Jean-Jacques Rousseau inspires the ECAL/HEAD Master in Cinema On the occasion of the reopening of the Maison de Rousseau et de la Littérature (MRL) in Geneva on April 21, 2021, students of the ECAL/HEAD Master s degree in Cinema are presenting a series of films as part of the Parcours Rousseau, which was designed by the Zurich architect Tristan Kobler of the Holzer Kobler office and co-written by two Rousseau specialists - Martin Rueff and Guillaume Chenevière. On the occasion of the reopening of the Maison de Rousseau et de la Littérature (MRL) in Geneva on April 21, 2021, students of the ECAL/HEAD (Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne/Haute école d art et de design Genève) Master s degree in Cinema are presenting a series of films as part of the Parcours Rousseau, which was designed by the Zurich architect Tristan Kobler of the Holzer Kobler office and co-written by two Rousseau specialists - Martin Rueff and Guillaume Chenevière. This journey perpetuates and updates the thought of the famous Swiss philosopher, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, by confronting it with the challenges of our time: education, nature and environment, secularism, citizenship, happiness. From September 2020 to January 2021, fifteen students of the ECAL/HEAD Master of Cinema - five in Directing, three in Scriptwriting, four in Sound, three in Editing - have taken up the major challenge of bringing together in a coherent way the historical and literary dimension of Jean-Jacques Rousseau with a personal and creative approach through filmic objects (documentary, fiction, montage film, archive film...). Each participant took part in the conception, direction and post-production of the films - mixing teams and roles (direction, editing, sound, script...). Eleven works are thus to be discovered within the framework of the course.

VideoArt Festival Locarno (1980–2001) – Symposium Online

Founded by the art dealer Rinaldo Bianda, the VideoArt Festival Locarno (1980-2001) was a pioneer platform for the presentation of the video art in Europe. Its series of colloquium and round tables organised by theorist and museum director René Berger made it a central platform for the theoretical exploration of the impact of video and, more broadly, of technology, on perception, as well as of the emergence of ‘technoculture and the reorganisation of knowledge. Concluding the research project supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation and based at ECAL, this colloquium seeks to revisit the VideoArt Festival and critically address its history and its role in championing and shaping video and new media art in Europe, through discussions and presentations with its protagonists as well as by experts in the field. ECAL Master Fine Arts Symposium Event

ECAL Master Fine Arts Symposium,23.03.2021,Online, Zoom ECAL Master Fine Arts Symposium: "Frantz Fanon s Critical Legacy : From the Alienation of the Individual to the Emancipation of Practices" Psychiatrist, essayist, theorist, and Algerian independence activist, Frantz Fanon (born in Fort-de-France in 1925, died in Bethesda in 1961) is a major figure of anti-colonial theory. From the decolonisation of the self, developed in "Black Skin, White Masks", to the use of violence in "The Wretched of The Earth", he fought against the conditions of a subaltern existence to go beyond race and colonial systems. The symposium seeks to open a conversational space, taking up Fanon s attitude of refusal to consider contemporary art practices, structures, and theories. In an effort to question the structures of contemporary society and the artistic field, lecturers share tools to become “conscious of [our] unconscious”, asking if the consciousness of structures instigates a renewal of thoughts and forms. The three conversation sessions are oriented around theories (counter-narratives), practices (regarding artists production), and means of action (by creating spaces, time and methodologies). 10:15am Introduction Stéphanie Moisdon, Head of Master Fine Arts 10:30am – 12pm Counter-narratives • Slavs and Tatars, artists collective 1:30pm – 3:30pm The Politics of Images • Noémi Michel, senior lecturer and researcher in Political Theory, UNIGE • Deborah Joyce Holman, artist and curator, founder of the art space 1.1, associate director at Auto Italia 4pm – 6pm Reparation and Means of Action • Kader Attia, artist and founder of La Colonie • Françoise Vergès, political scientist and feminist activist, founder of the association “Décoloniser les arts”. Masterclasses ECAL: Milio Rau Event

HERE AND THERE Project
HERE AND THERE

HERE AND THERE A new educational model for a post-pandemic world The global pandemic has forever changed how we work, learn and play, making virtual communication the primary form of human interaction. Here and There is a new digital pedagogy that enables students to create networked physical interfaces with limited material resources and tools, while being away and stripped from a traditional in-person studio and workshop setting. Initiated during a week-long workshop in Cambridge (USA) in March 2020, it brought together students in Bachelor Media & Interaction Design from ECAL and students from MIT s Undergraduate Design Minor and Bachelor of Science in Art and Design programs. During the 2020 spring quarantine, a series of open source software and hardware tools were developed to allow students to build electronic objects from simple and readily available materials. These objects were then dynamically routed and connected to each other to physically augment video chatting and to allow students to extend their virtual reach into each other s tangible spaces. For the first phase of this project, students had to imagine, design and implement two interfaces, whose design and behavior allowed and suggested a new form of communication between two people, in two separate places. Notions of remote presence, simultaneous actions, shared experience and telepresence were explored, fundamentally expanding the ways through which we interact and communicate. Open to other academic institutions and the public at large, we plan to continue improving the software routing interface, the techniques for documentation and sharing prototypes, as well as the remote interfaces that we hope will help foster a more human and connected post-pandemic world. Mobile Fan Project
Mobile Fan

Mobile Fan Fans with USB power supply for mobile use, for the Swiss brand Stadler Form. Stadler Form is a Swiss company that produces fans, humidifiers, purifiers and other air treatment devices. For this project, the students in 2nd year Bachelor Industrial Design, directed by designer Christian Spiess, had to make a “personal” fan, equipped with a USB power supply for mobile use. They had to think of new scenarios and contexts where a small fan would be useful. They were free to explore different usage scenarios, materials, etc. other than those currently in the Stadler Form catalog. The projects had to meet Stadler Form s high standards of industrial design, but also challenge and question their existing products.
