Julie Richoz receives one of the Grands Prix de la Création de la Ville de Paris 2023 Congratulations to designer Julie Richoz, ECAL graduate and winner of the Grands Prix de la Création de la Ville de Paris 2023. For 30 years, the City of Paris has renewed its commitment to the creative professions each year. In 2023, the Grands Prix de la Création de la Ville de Paris will reward 7 winners: 3 Grands Prix, 3 Emerging Talents and 1 Fashion Accessories Prize. The Grand Prix rewards a professional for the quality of his or her project and career path, development strategy, commitment to the transmission of know-how or innovation. This prize is aimed at experienced professionals, companies and brands whose development is well advanced. A 2012 graduate of a Bachelor Industrial Design from ECAL, worked with designer Pierre Charpin from 2013 to 2015. Winner of the Grand Prix du Jury at the Villa Noailles Design Parade in 2012, which enabled her to work with CIRVA (Centre international de recherche sur le verre et les arts plastiques), published by Galerie Kreo, she says she entered design practice with one-off pieces or small series. " However, I put a lot of energy into developing industrial projects, which then become accessible to a larger number of people. It s a different, more complex approach, where everything can come undone for a detail. That s why, when I saw the letter of intent from Inga Sempé, the President of the Jury, I wanted to present my work to her. She explained that she wanted to showcase singular but also industrial objects. (...) This proves that just because you work in series doesn t mean you can t be bold in language and form." says the designer, who set up her studio in 2012. julierichoz.com bdmma.paris

So how can we live better – 2023 #2 Project
So how can we live better – 2023 #2

So how can we live better – 2023 #2 Beyond questions of functionality, comfort and individual or collective well-being, the built environment is able to respond in a stimulating way to societal, energy and environmental challenges. The work space, the living space, the public space, the interior space, the street, are carried by real statements of intent that motivate their forms, following certain principles such as climate transition, densification, ecology and energy transition.... The 2nd year Graphic Design students worked on the production of a communication based on one of these principles (or others) and on the architectural realization which refers to it in order to promote it. The hours Edition Time is an elusive element dictated by architectural elements or objects, but this reissue of The hours takes us to a more fundamental and biological vision. By Srumenti per guardare la natura Edition By État des Lieux Edition & Animation There s the dock, the bench and the fish bench. But the most pleasant bench is the public bench. Accessible to all, it offers a supposedly charming view that we all share. Only one person won t see the same thing as the other. So I chose a bench and tied two envelopes to it. The first envelope contains blank pieces of paper measuring nine by six centimetres and a grey pencil. On it is written: "Take a piece of paper and answer the following question: What do you see? Then put your answer in the other envelope. The second envelope is empty and unmarked. État des lieux transcribes the results of this extraordinary experiment. By L atelier Edition Book about the life and work of my grandfather and artist Pierre Noël Bergendi. The content is made up of images and texts from his personal archives found at the Atelier. All the documents are arranged chronologically and are supplemented by transcriptions of notes from his calendars. Links between the images have been added to show the global aspect of his work. By Rome was not build in 5.5 years Edition Waiting is inevitable in daily life, whether it s in store queues or public transportation. This waiting time can significantly influence our perception of time. By becoming aware of the time we spend waiting, which accumulates to 5.5 years over a lifetime, we can better understand its value. Comparing this waiting time to the duration required to build famous architectural monuments, we realize how precious it is. This analysis highlights the importance of managing our waiting time productively, using it for meaningful activities, personal reflection, or productivity. In summary, becoming aware of the impact of waiting in our lives encourages us to use these moments more intentionally. By

Collector – 2023 During the visual identity course with Adeline Mollard, the students had to develop an identity project promoting a collection chosen by them. Each project includes the design of a catalogue contextualising and presenting the collection, together with the design of a triptych of posters. Pas de publicité, merci "Pas de publicité, merci." This collection brings together a variety of unwanted newspapers, flyers and advertisements found daily in letterboxes near Lausanne.  With no addressees, these advertisements lose their original usefulness. The aim was to create a new dialogue by recontextualizing and glorifying these images. The secret life of objects – 2023 #2

The secret life of objects – 2023 #2 During the visual identity course, the students had to choose an object that could perform a specific function. Once they had deciphered all the facets of the object, they were asked to come up with a visual identity concept to present the object and show it in a graphic way that best defined it. Kintsugi Through experiments with non-traditional graphic techniques, this project is built around a series of grids taken from Bernina sewing machine software. This system gives rhythm and structure to the entire identity, illustrated in a catalogue presenting the 2023 collection. Each of the 6 patches is designed to repair specific materials, reinventing the way we think about repairing and improving our objects. "Kintsugi invites you to reconnect with your material possessions by giving them a second chance. Thanks to sewn patches, designed to meet any need, repair/recollect/improve your broken objects!" Founded in the wake of the nuclear phase-out and the resumption of coal drilling, a group of artists and graphic designers from the Berlin scene came together to metabolise their ideas and start a militant movement. The group claimed no political allegiance. The name Asemik Groupe is directly inspired by the concept of asemic writing. As well as civil disobedience actions, the collective explores new fields in typography and typeface creation, breaking free from traditional graphic dogmas. Asemik Groupe makes its mark above all through press vandalism. This consists of intervening directly on the offset plates of official printers in order to spread their message via the press. To do this, AG members engrave asemic or illustrative slogans on the plates with a drill. La Valse Sauvage (direction) Project
La Valse Sauvage (direction)

Rémi Molleyres – La Valse Sauvage (direction) Swiss countryside, 1939. Joseph has a date with Félicie, his fiancée, to go dancing at the village ball. He finds her agitated and she confesses to him that she has just killed her uncle and that she is about to flee. She invites him to leave with her, but he cannot bring himself to such an upheaval. This is the pitch for my graduation film, shot in April 2023. Driven by a real desire for fiction, I was confronted with the challenges related to period films. These constraints, in particular those related to the sets, turned out to be very stimulating for me during the writing process. The result is a film of around 20 minutes, the culmination of a very rewarding year. This project was indeed an opportunity for me to better understand the role of production and casting.

Ilan Dubi – Avant l océan (direction) A short film shot in Lausanne by night. “A 15-year-old boy decides to flee his city to join Olivia on her way to the ocean. Only, a transportation issue forces them to wait in the city by night.” With a shoulder-mounted camera and a small crew, we set out into the streets of Lausanne to film the wanderings of two teenagers tinged with the melancholy of departure. In this film, with its saturated images and surreal sounds, I sought to explore the notion of introspection and the feeling of disillusionment that haunts our teenage years. The film opens with a shot of the ocean at sunset, followed by a transparent portrait of the main character.

Rose à la ferme (direction) Project
Rose à la ferme (direction)

Giulia Goy – Rose à la ferme (direction) Attracted to different image regimes, it was obvious to me that I wanted to use them for my graduation film. I knew that I wanted to film cows, but I was not yet aware of my attraction to them. I prefer documentaries, because of the freedom they give me and the chance they give me to play with fiction casually. I had already experimented with this form with my previous short film, Casting di un Padre, and it made me want to delve deeper into this personal approach. I really wanted to experiment with my practice, to get out of my comfort zone and to move towards a form of cinema that speaks to me. Synopsis: Rose, a young filmmaker looking for a job, decides to change direction and train as a farmer. This coming-of-age story questions our relationship with the land, with art and with the role of filmmakers as observers of our world.

Lotto(-portrait), – 2023

Alix Bitz – Lotto(-portrait), – 2023 Installation objects & lithographs Size: approx. 2 x 2 m At eye level, a white line. A void. Looking up, a series of self-portraits stare back at us. Faces in transmutation. A single portrait cannot show the full extent of a being. So it unfolds before exploding to better reappear. Underneath, a collection of objects, like the wanderings of a life that has led to this moment and stops. Memories flow from the heads that have become objects. Through this staging, the shattered quest for a self that slips away as soon as we seem to approach it.

14 juin – 2023 Project
14 juin – 2023

Ali Chatila – 14 juin – 2023 My graduation project consists of four 90 x 200 cm wooden boards – in total, eight sides on which I have been painting for over two years. I paint mainly for the pleasure of painting and like to focus on the present moment. At the end of my studies, I will continue working on these four boards. They are therefore not finished and may never be. The title of the work announces the temporary interruption. I do not have any particular technique; I just paint with what I find. My four boards were salvaged from a dumpster and most of the material I use was destined to be thrown away. For my installation, my paintings are fixed on the wall, revealing only the four sides.

Pierre – 2023

Guillaume Gindrat – Pierre – 2023 In a context of energy crisis and a generalised awareness of the finiteness of available resources, the use of local resources for heating is being taken into consideration. Pierre offers a compact heating alternative. Like its wood, the stove uses locally sourced stones to store the heat. This facilitates transport, while creating a unique composition for each installation.

The Table of the Future – 2023 Project
The Table of the Future – 2023

Sam Lombardo – The Table of the Future – 2023 The Silverground modules are designed to provide an opportunity for senior citizens to exercise their agility and balance in public spaces. These innovative modules are designed to be built into the ground along a walkway. Available to everyone, they are a great way to practice a fun, intergenerational activity. Balance is an essential skill for seniors. It is exercised through physical activity but is often neglected as we age. Professionally supervised physical activities are often costly for the elderly. These urban modules offer a solution accessible to all and help prevent falls – the main cause of accidents among the elderly. Usually, we find that the room in which we cook is separate from the dining room and therefore, when we prepare a meal, we are away from the rest of the family or from our guests. Beneath its ceramic top, this dining table hides an induction system. This means it can be used to prepare table dishes without additional equipment, or simply as a hob. Indeed, who wouldn t want to cook while looking after the children, work while preparing tea or coffee, cook a dish surrounded by friends, keep dishes warm or be able to cook raclette directly on the table?

Fantastic Smartphones at Ars Electronica 2023

Fantastic Smartphones at Ars Electronica 2023,06–10.09.2023 Ars Electronica is hosting the Fantastic Smartphones exhibition from 6 to 10 September 2023 in Austria. Ars Electronica is considered to be Europe s biggest and oldest event devoted to art, technology and society. For its 2023 edition, the festival is inviting artists, scientists, developers, designers and entrepreneurs to consider the following question: Who owns the truth? A theme that touches on the main controversial issues of our time: truth and ownership, interpretative authority and sovereignty. Can truth be owned? Is there a right to truth and, if it belongs to someone, what control and responsibility are associated with it? Fantastic Smartphones takes part in the festival with a serie of interactive installations developed by the Bachelor Media & Interaction Design students of ECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne, investigating in a critical and offbeat way our relationship with our smartphones and the way they influence our daily behaviour. STUDENTS, , , , , , , , , ,  ,, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , HEADS OF PROJECT , TEACHERS, (AATB), Jesse Howard , , , , , , (Moniker)ASSISTANTS, , , , COORDINATION & DEVELOPMENT, , Pascal Ospelt,  , SIGMASIX, EXHIBITION DESIGNHEAD OF PROGRAMMEDATES06-10.09.2023 ADDRESSArs Electronica Festival – POSTCITY Bahnhofpl. 12 4020 Linz, Autriche WEBSITEArs ElectronicaTICKETSars.electronica.art

Directing workshop with Yann Gonzalez Project
Directing workshop with Yann Gonzalez

Directing workshop with Yann Gonzalez In partnership with La Manufacture, the Master Cinema ECAL/HEAD  invited director Yann Gonzalez to take part in a directing workshop. Professor: The most crucial challenge in working on the question of theatricality was to create links between the students of the Master ECAL/HEAD, and those of La Manufacture - Stage directing Master. Theatricality is organic to my cinephilia and, indeed, to my films. By showing the students extracts from opposite ends of the spectrum, from Chantal Akerman s Toute une nuit to John Waters Desperate Living, from Daniel Schmid s Cette nuit ou jamais to a clip from Palmbomen II, I wanted to convey this idea of a plural theatricality, by turns playful and grotesque, hypnotic and lyrical. In short, theatricality as a tool for freedom. And that s what we set out to do, all of us together, during this short workshop week: to create bursts of freedom within the limits of a collective exercise with no resources - two days of preparation and reflection, two days of filming, one day of editing. Starting with a basic constraint and narrative, two groups of six students opened up their most unbridled imaginations and shared roles and functions with a group spirit that was a pleasure to behold. There were cowboys (Direction) – 2023

Jay Holdener – There were cowboys (Direction) – 2023 Daniel back from the USA, is given a mission by a  ghostly Cowboy: to steal a Chevy El Camino. Fiction / 20 15 min Synopsis Terribly disappointed by his recent trip to the USA for which he had too great expectations, Daniel, back in Switzerland, finds his daily life waiting for him. As he s slowly drowning in depression, one day appears before him a cowboy who ll give him a mission: to steal his dream car, a Chevy El Camino. Commentaire de l étudiant Through this project, I wanted to dip my toe in comedy while using references to genre films and their codes. I wanted to do it through still shots and a lack of movement to install how static his life is. Jay Holdener

Rose on the farm (Direction)

Giulia Goy – Rose on the farm (Direction) Rose is a young filmmaker who s looking for a job. She decides to go on a course to retrain as a farmer. This is an inceptive story that questions our relationship with the land, with art, as well as the role of filmmakers as observers of our world. Docu-Fiction / 35 min Synopsis Rose, a young, recently graduated filmmaker, reflects on her calling on this earth. Looking for a job, she applies to the regional employment office. As there are no openings and as she wishes to work outside, she gets an offer to retrain as a farmer. Rose decides to trust the institution and embarks on this existential venture while keeping a diary. An initiatory quest that questions our relationship to nature, to art, to the role of filmmaker as an observer of our world. The wild waltz (Direction)

Rémi Molleyres – The wild waltz (Direction) Joseph discovers that Félicie, his fiancée, just killed her uncle and has decided to run away. A whole life collapses for the young couple. Student s comment This is the pitch for my diploma film, shot in April 2023. Driven by a reel desire for fiction, these are the challenges related to period film that imposed themselves on me. These constraints, in particular those related to the decors, proved to be very stimulating for me during the writing. The result is a film of around twenty minutes, the culmination of a very rewarding year. This project was indeed an opportunity for me to better understand the role of production or casting. Documentary film workshop with Guillaume Brac – 2023

Documentary film workshop with Guillaume Brac – 2023 2nd year students took part in a documentary workshop led by Guillaume Brac, on the theme of friendship. Head of workshop: Guest teachers: (editing) (photogrpahy) (writing) "After a successful first experience last year, I once again had the pleasure of helping second-year students make their documentary films. This time, I didn t give them a mandate, but rather a theme - friendship - to interpret freely. What I wanted above all was to get them to film the bond, the feeling. To delve into their experiences and emotions. The watchword of the workshop was sincerity. To make the most accurate, honest film possible, in terms of point of view and relationship to the filmed subject. To find the cinematographic language, the directing, that corresponds to and resembles them. This workshop is as fascinating as it is demanding, because it involves students getting to know themselves better, as filmmakers of course, but also as people. From these almost five months of work and trial and error have emerged ten very fine films, all very personal, dealing with a wide variety of bonds. The bond with the distant or missing father, with the prisoner to whom we write, with friends left on the other side of the world, with the party gang, with the friend undergoing reconstruction, with the famous young actor, with old Michel, with God, with his dog. We cry at some, laugh at others. And we tell ourselves that making films is a great way to grow up."
