Lucien Langton – Tilt Tower “Tilt Tower is an interactive monumental projection that took place during the Transat Festival in Lausanne on the 28th, 29th and 30th of June 2012. The main idea is to offer the public a fun and original way to interact with the projected content. Any spectator can launch an animation by dropping a ball in a hole situated in front of the building. The aim of this installation is to put in perspective differences in scale as well as the contrast between a physical input and a digital response. The aspect that I enjoyed the most while developing the project was the creation of animations and their micro-nar- rations. However, as a whole, it is often hard to find such events with interactivity. It is also extremely rare to see anything different from the aesthetic clichés of 3D rendering engines. Most of the time, monumental projection takes place in the public space. That s why it was simply a pleasure to build a different way to give a little life to it.” Lucien Langton

Chloé Tun Tun – Last Time Burma “Being the daughter of a Burmese father and having lived in Myanmar, the idea of exploring this side of my identity, and travelling to Myanmar felt like a necessity. When I arrived I felt like I wasn t part of the culture as much as I thought. In contrast to this I felt very comfortable with my surroundings, which made everything feel strange yet familiar at the same time. I decided to use this feeling as the main structure for this project. When I arrived back in Switzerland, I split the photos into two parts, I used installation to create an atmosphere that could translate how the mystical and the mysterious aspects of the country marked my understanding, and my way of seeing and taking photographs. For the second half of the project I decided to create a book. I tried to make this as honestly as possible in the hope of creating an intimate relationship between the country and myself as well as providing the reader with an insight into who I am. It has been an important insight into my life, enabling me to answer many questions in regard to my identity and my work.“

I have photographed the various aspects of the place, showing them from an unusual perspective. The photographs are manipulated, retouched and set up in order to create a fabricated reality and disturb the spectator. Presented along with a display, this project takes the form of a book. The whole becomes a fictional study. The hardest for me was to meet the inhabitants, the Combiers. My personal approach of the subject has allowed me to improve my technical skills. Some images required a particular setup. Collaboration with Baccarat 2012 Following the collaboration initiated in 2011 around the iconic Harcourt glass, Baccarat and ECAL are continuing their common reflection in 2012. The students of the Master of Advanced Studies in Design for Luxury and Craftsmanship are all working on the same global project, combining object design, scenography, photography and the conception of a final publication. Supervised by London designer Bethan Laura Wood and Parisian photographer Philippe Jarrigeon, each group of students set out to revisit the universal theme of the Vase, starting from the same basic conical shape and questioning all of the Manufacture s know-how. Based on the principles of cutting, engraving, sandblasting and gilding, Vase-O-Rama was created, a hybrid and abundant collection, like a panorama. Witnessing the dialogue between the personalities and cultures of students from fifteen different nationalities, the epilogue of this six-month workshop highlights the contemporary potential of Baccarat s heritage. By pushing each concept as far as possible and mischievously underlining the noble and mysterious forces of crystal, the six final projects explore the uses, materials, and notions of scale and aesthetics inherent in the object. With humour and transgression, the "Vase-O-Rama" collection reveals creations that celebrate Baccarat s know-how. TARTAN, CHEVRON & HARLEQUIN Ana Varela & David Luraschi Set of three vases reinterpreting the textile motifs of tartan, chevron and argyle. EXQUIS Kacper Hamilton Based on the exquisite cadaver principle, this series of three vases uses various combinations of designs and cut-outs from the factory s archives. SIDEWAY Cahrlotte Sunnen The horizontal cut-outs of the vase allow the piece to be held at an angle while resting on a base. HARNESS Cahrlotte Sunnen The vase has an integrated harness that can be used as a backpack.

Many projects were developed and prototyped in order to present a large selection of ideas. From the bird call found in the Vallée de Joux, through a topographical representation of the same region, to a glossary of the parts that make up a watch, all the projects draw their references from the universe of the Haute Horlogerie brand. Documentary / 16min Synopsis His Excellency, the plenipotentiary Ambassador of the Republic of Poland to the Belgian Crown sacrificed his entire life for his country. His dedication came with a price; he never really had time for me, his son. In admiration, I always longed to be like him. However, I feel like I am quite the opposite. I thus, decide to come to Brussels to try to make up for lost time. Commentaire A son, a father. The first holds a camera, the other is an ambassador. A great game of evasions where the son, by dint of (voluntarily) getting his feet wet, manages to draw a portrait of his father (and his own, as a result...). Collaboration with Baccarat 2011 For this first collaboration with Baccarat, the students worked under the direction of the two London designers Ed Barber and Jay Osgerby to give new interpretations of the famous Harcourt glass, an icon of the brand, which celebrates its 170th anniversary in 2011. This glass, whose design has remained unchanged since its creation, has become a classic in the diplomatic world, from the table of Napoleon III to that of John Paul II. Les nouvelles propositions, de l iconoclasme du verre étiré Harcourt au détournement des verres en pièces de jeu d échec, démontrent à la fois l engouement des étudiants pour le cristal et rappellent que le style Harcourt est intemporel. La question “en être ou ne pas en être? “ aurait remplacé toutes les autres.   Pourtant, il existe bien d autres réalités, des récits parallèles, une manière différente de raconter l histoire de ces artistes, critiques, commissaires qui voyaient l art et l exposition comme un terrain de jeu, de conquête, d inventions premières. L école étant le lieu par excellence de toutes sortes de projections, folles et dérisoires, extravagantes et triviales, c est aussi le meilleur contexte pour transmettre un peu de l histoire réelle et clandestine de ces origines, des grands et des petits commencements. L idée de cette journée de symposium, qui ne revient à aucune thématique, est de donner aux étudiants des classes de Master l opportunité d entendre et de partager le récit de quelques-unes de ces trajectoires uniques qui ont marqué les dernières décennies. Où l on comprend comment le jeune Hans Ulrich Obrist, alors étudiant en économie, loin d imaginer qu il serait un jour qualifié de « meta-curator », décide d aller à la rencontre des artistes de son temps. Une mise en mouvement qui deviendra une méthode. Peter Fischli et David Weiss se souviennent avec lui de leur rencontre et de ces débuts héroïques des années 90. Dans l œuvre de Xavier Veilhan, l universalisme formel, qui semble renvoyer à l idéal de l art classique, se trouve contrebalancé par la singularité des dispositifs de mise en scène des œuvres, des situations et des environnements construits, par la modernité des sujets et par les procédés high-tech utilisés qui convoquent des images de la société de production industrielle et de consommation dans des univers étranges et équivoques. Hidden Carbon This project is a manifesto initiated by the EPFL+ECAL Lab to go beyond the high tech look of carbon so as to explore its full potential.Two major design schools, ECAL/University of art and design Lausanne in Switzerland, and Ensci-Les Ateliers in Paris, have risen to the challenge. Carbon fibre composites are gradually entering our daily life thanks to their exceptional mechanical properties – incredibly tough but extremely lightweight. Used in numerous high-end sports applications, this material has become a high tech icon – to such an extent that one often forgets its main advantage: to make uniquely light shapes and uses possible, with astonishing thermal, sound or electrical performances.The objective of the Hidden Carbon project is to rediscover the relevance of carbon fibre by investigating original object typologies and uses based on its special mechanical properties. Under the leadership of Jean-François Dingjian for ENSCI-Les Ateliers and Alexis Georgacopoulos for ECAL, the EPFL+ECAL Lab brought together thirty students on this project, in cooperation with world-leading carbon experts – the Décision shipyard and the Laboratory of Polymer and Composite Technology of the Ecole polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL).

Hexagone: nouveau design français,21–26.11.2010,Gallery l elac, ECAL En collaboration avec l Ambassade de France à Berne, l Association Internationale des Maires Francophones (AIMF) et la Ville de Lausanne, Pierre Keller, président de l elac (l espace lausannois d art contemporain) de 1995 à 2011, présente une exposition d objets réalisés par une sélection de designers français. Vernissage en présence de Bertrand Delanoë, maire de Paris. «Près d un tiers de nos étudiants est français. Cet événement est un peu une façon de leur rendre hommage», explique Pierre Keller, directeur de l ECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne de 1995 à 2011 et président de l elac (l espace lausannois d art contemporain). Grâce à un processus de sélection initié par Pierre Charpin, cette exposition présente ainsi les travaux d une vingtaine de designers hexagonaux parmi les plus influents actuellement. Documentary / 11min Synopsis Through the rediscovery of archival images long kept at my grandparents home in Bordeaux, I tell the story of my childhood in Mandima, a small village in northeastern Zaire where I was born. Starting with a panoramic photo of the big departure, I observe and think back, photo after photo, to those first 10 years of this little boy who must, one fine day, leave for the city, for high school. Documentary Synopsis The 6th of April 2009, at 3.32 am, the earth trembled in Italy and caused the destruction of the town of Aquila and of 200 villages in the surroundings. Today the survivors live in aseismic buildings which are situated on the hills, far from the rubble. Julien Chavaillaz – Oda “ODA (Operation Department Alpha), is a reflection on the representation of war. I realized a documentary about american troops based in Afghanistan. Drawing my inspiration from pictures broadcasted by a number of media, I photographed war as I imagined it, and possibly as it unfolds in the collective imaginary. In fact, all was stage setting made in Switzerland and France with ultra realistic airsoft players. In parallel, I worked on a mode of appropriation of the image of the soldier and of his attributes. My idea was to transpose them into the universe of videogames, in reference to the role-playing game broadcasted by the American Army on the internet. Finally, I gathered together both approaches with the aim of creating a work, which would sway between reality and fiction. This, in turn, would open threads of reflection on war and its representation, and on the issue of truth and falsity in war reporting.“

Jean Lecoultre: Oeuvres 1990-2010,03.04.2010–28.01.2011,Gallery l elac, ECAL L espace lausannois d art contemporain (l elac) accueille une exposition de Jean Lecoultre, qui vient de fêter ses 80 ans. L occasion de (re)découvrir d anciennes toiles, ainsi que des nouveaux tableaux de l artiste lausannois. Conjointement, sort «Jean Lecoultre ou la haine de la peinture», un ouvrage de 180 pages (avec un texte inédit de Jacques Chessex) publié aux Editions de la Matze. Né le 9 juin 1930, Jean Lecoultre est le fils d Emile Julien, employé de banque originaire du Chenit, et d Elise Jeanne Motta d origine piémontaise. Diplômé de l Ecole de commerce en 1948, Lecoultre devient ensuite employé chez Swissair, à Genève, au service du contentieux. En 1951, il part pour Madrid, cessant toute activité administrative pour se consacrer exclusivement à la peinture, puis il rencontre Acacia Jerez Aguilar qu il épouse en 1952. Les toiles de Lecoultre sont exposées pour la première fois en 1952 à la galerie de la Paix à Lausanne. Cette même année, Jean Lecoultre participe à une exposition collective à Madrid à laquelle prend part Antonio Saura. Il se lie d amitié avec le peintre, ainsi qu avec son frère le cinéaste Carlos Saura. En 1955, il obtient la bourse fédérale des Beaux-Arts. Pour des raisons familiales, il revient à Lausanne en 1957, mais l Espagne reste son inspiration principale jusqu en 1962. Dans les années soixante, il change de technique et de style. A cette période, Lecoultre expose tant en Espagne qu en Suisse romande, à Berne et à Zurich, à Paris ainsi qu à Tokyo. Jean Lecoultre a également un œuvre gravé important. Dès 1955, il apprend l eau-forte et la pointe sèche. Puis en 1967, il collabore, aux côtés de Pietro Sarto, aux «Presses artistiques» de Pully et reçoit en 1969 le Prix genevois de la Jeune Gravure. Il est exposé aux «Graveurs suisses» de Stockholm et la «7e Biennale de la Gravure de Tokyo et Kyoto» en 1970, ainsi qu à la «Triennale de la Gravure de New Delhi» en 1971. De 1973 à 1975, il est membre de la Commission fédérale des beaux-arts et représente la Suisse à la Biennale de Venise en 1978. Depuis, il continue constamment d exposer en Suisse romande, notamment à la Galerie Alice Pauli à Lausanne, au Musée Jenisch à Vevey, à la Galerie Ditesheim à Neuchâtel ou encore à la Fondation Gianadda à Martigny, mais également à l étranger comme à Paris, Barcelone, Madrid ou Cuenca… A plus de 80 ans aujourd hui, il exerce toujours dans son atelier à Pully. A cette occasion, 43 affiches sérigraphiées par Albin Uldry à Hinterkappelen (BE) sont présentées. Werner Jeker Né à Mumliswil en Suisse le 25 décembre 1944, Werner Jeker vit et travaille à Châtillens et à Lausanne. Il collabore régulièrement avec un nombre important d institutions culturelles, sociales et commerciales, telles que les Galeries FNAC Photo, Magnum Photos, les éditions Phaidon, la Cité de la Musique, la Kieler Woche en Allemagne, l Expo .02 (conception et réalisation du pavillon Signaldouleur), la SUVA et Nespresso (conception d expositions), la Fondation suisse pour Photographie, la Cinémathèque Suisse, le Musée des Arts Décoratifs, le Musée de l Elysée et le Théâtre Vidy-Lausanne pour qui il crée des affiches – le domaine dans lequel il a obtenu célébrité – mais aussi des programmes, des revues, des livres et divers autres documents graphiques. Il a également été directeur artistique de la communication pour Weimar 99, capitale culturelle de l Europe en 1999. Il a obtenu de nombreux prix nationaux et internationaux, parmi lesquels un Award pour Exceptional Use of Photography in Graphic Design de l International Center of Photography de New York en 1988 et le Premier Prix pour une nouvelle série de billets de banque suisse en 1989. Il a été professeur à l ECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne de 1974 à 1986 ainsi qu à Karlsruhe et Paris de 1995 à 1998. De 2003 à 2007, il a été co-responsable de la filière Communication visuelle de la Haute Ecole des Arts de Berne (HEAB). Il est aussi membre de l Alliance Graphique Internationale (AGI). Albin Uldry Albin Uldry est né le 25 avril 1932 à Vevey. Il a obtenu son CFC chez les frères De Grandi à Vevey, puis a travaillé chez Neon Mex à Lausanne. En 1963, il ouvre son atelier Sérigraphie Uldry SA à Hinterkappelen (BE) où il oeuvre avec son épouse Noëlle. Durant 46 ans, il a produit des affiches pour les plus grands artistes suisses et internationaux.

Nicolas Haeni – And if we dance? “This magazine contains the remedy for boredom: the boredom suffered by this generation of bourgeois left-wingers or golden youth who lack nothing and who, to make their daily lives more exciting, create new games, delusions and costumes... With all the necessary self-mockery, you offer a solution to passivity, perhaps a new way for the people concerned to express themselves, to rebel or to find a space/time in which the freedom to do as they please allows them to blossom. It s also a way of saying no to work, to the lucrative activity that society wants us to take part in. So man does everything he can to avoid toil, and seeks to create new excuses to escape it by devising new diversions. He sets up this new universe using society s material environment. Doing nothing is also a form of revolt, an opposition to the established system. And the act of creating gives human beings the possibility of realizing themselves, of satisfying their deepest fantasies.“

DeMo The exhibition design is a creative process that consists in moving from the idea of an exhibition to its display and communication. As a multidisciplinary and collective activity, it brings together those responsible for determining the content of an exhibition museum management, curators, exhibition curators and those involved its practical realization scenographers or exhibition designers. The ECAL and the HEAD Geneva offer trainings in different branches involved in exhibition design: visual communication, interior architecture and industrial and product design. Since September 2006, they are combining their efforts to carry out applied research in exhibition design following two complementary lines of research: • Experimentation : by setting up research workshops with the aim of testing concrete and innovative solutions to questions raised within contemporary exhibition design. Three workshops took place: – in December 2006 on the topic of collections (private, public) with Martino Gamper and Benjamin Reichen > images 1-4 – in March 2007 with Alexandra Gübeli and Claudia Wildermuth on the topic of setting texts in space > images 5-9 - in November 2007 with Philippe Délis (curator), Sean Murphy and Brian Studak on the topic of visual communication in exhibition space > images 9-12 • The state of the art : by gathering and diffusing original knowledge, theoretical and practical, on the contributions of design in contemporary museum practice. L occasion de venir découvrir des œuvres souvent inédites d artistes qui ont aujourd hui acquis pour la plupart une reconnaissance internationale. Une exposition qui présente une sélection d anciens étudiants du Département arts visuels et dont le dispositif a été confié à Stéphanie Moisdon, critique d art et commissaire indépendante à Paris, assistée de Guillaume Pilet et Vincent Normand, deux étudiants du Master en arts visuels. Ainsi, ils ont pu orchestrer dans l espace lausannois d art contemporain (l elac) une scénographie qui confère à cette exposition un aspect parfaitement original. On y retrouve des peintures, sculptures, photographies, installations ou vidéo de BLAKAM, Valentin Carron, Etienne Chambaud, Claudia Comte, Geoffrey Cottenceau et Romain Rousset, Stéphane Dafflon, Philippe Decrauzat, Cyprien Gaillard, Athene Galiciadis, Aloïs Godinat, David Hominal, Vincent Kohler, Körner Union, Stéphane Kropf, Genêt Mayor, Adrien Missika, Mélodie Mousset, Guillaume Pilet, Didier Rittener, Denis Savary, Benjamin Valenza… et Pierre Keller. Il est possible d acquérir les pièces présentées dans l exposition. Une partie des fonds récoltés servira à pérenniser l espace lausannois d art contemporain.

Ronan et Erwan Bouroullec: étapes

Ronan et Erwan Bouroullec: étapes,03.10–22.11.2008,Gallery l elac, ECAL L espace lausannois d art contemporain (l elac) présente « étapes», une exposition de Ronan et Erwan Bouroullec. A cette occasion, les designers français ont décidé de montrer une partie des processus techniques de confection du mobilier ainsi que leurs sources d inspiration, dessins figuratifs ou non, qu ils réalisent en connexion avec leurs projets. Les deux frères ont fait une exposition «rugueuse et atmosphérique», des tableaux en trois dimensions à la fois pédagogiques et poétiques. Ronan (1971), également professeur à l ECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne, et Erwan (1976) Bouroullec signent leurs projets à deux depuis 1999. Leur collaboration est un dialogue permanent, nourri de leurs singularités, et mû par une exigence commune. A l occasion de la présentation de la cuisine désintégrée au Salon du Meuble de Paris en 1997, ils sont remarqués par Giulio Cappellini qui leur confiera leurs premiers projets de design industriel. En 2000, Issey Miyake fait appel à eux pour dessiner un espace destiné à sa nouvelle collection de vêtements A-Poc à Paris. Plus tard, la rencontre décisive avec Rolf Fehlbaum, Président de Vitra, mène à la production d un nouveau système de bureaux appelé Joyn en 2002. C est le début d une collaboration étroite, concrétisée par le lancement d une série de projets comme les Algues, l Alcove Sofa, la Worknest et la Slow Chair. Ronan et Erwan Bouroullec travaillent aujourd hui régulièrement pour de nombreuses maisons d édition de design industriel comme Vitra, Kvadrat, Magis, Kartell, Ligne Roset, Issey Miyake et Cappellini. Parallèlement, ils effectuent un travail de recherche au sein de la Galerie Kreo dont émaneront plusieurs expositions personnelles entre 2001 et 2008. Enfin, ils réalisent ponctuellement des projets d architecture comme la Maison Flottante en 2006, résidence d artiste du CNEAI (Centre National des Estampes et de l Art Imprimé) à Chatou. Élus créateurs de l année au Salon du Meuble de Paris en 2002, ils ont reçu, entre autres, le New Designer Award de l International Contemporary Furniture Fair de New York en 1999, le Grand Prix du Design de la Ville de Paris en 1998 et le Premier prix de la Biennale du Design de Saint-Etienne en 1998. Designers de l année pour Elle Décoration Japon en 2006, leur chaise de Bureau Worknest a reçu la distinction Best of the Best du Red Dot Award en 2008. Plusieurs expositions personnelles leur ont été consacrées, dont celle du Design Museum de Londres en 2002, du Museum of Contemporary Art de Los Angeles et du Boijmans Museum of Art de Rotterdam. Certaines de leurs créations appartiennent aux collections permanentes d institutions comme le Musée National d Art Moderne – Centre Georges Pompidou à Paris, le Museum of Modern Art de New York, le Design Museum de Londres, le Musée du Design de Lisbonne ou encore le Boijmans Museum of Art de Rotterdam. L exposition est co-produite avec la villa Noailles à Hyères (France) et le Grand-Hornu Images (Belgique).

Léonore Baud – Lovers of the Nile Young couples in search of intimacy on the banks of the Nile in Cairo. Léonore Baud tries to catch them with her camera in a long tracking shot in a car; but as soon as the lovers feel observed, they stop snogging. Uncomfortable with this device, the director stops shooting. What she would like to do is to get out of the car and film the couples openly. A step that Egyptian moral rules make impossible however. Lovers of the Nile poses a fundamental question of the cinema of reality. Can we force people to be filmed? Documentary Synopsis Young couples in search of intimacy on the banks of the Nile in Cairo. Continuing her adventure, the filmmaker organizes a casting session where she chooses a couple to whom she proposes to play the game of love in front of the camera. Léonore Baud doesn t let herself be discouraged, and that s the whole point of her film. She is therefore going to be interested in the origins of these moral prohibitions. She starts looking for information on the subject from Egyptian filmmakers and the head of the censorship. They all told her that the gap between the Arab and Western world is deep, and that she had to accept that the ethical, moral and cultural rules that govern Egypt are different from her own. The filmmaker will therefore not make Lovers of the Nile, but will instead offer us a subtle reflection on the profession of filmmaker. Comment Making a documentary on lovers in Cairo: this is the project of a young Swiss student of cinema who quickly comes up against a term that is absolutely foreign to his work: censorship. A short journey through the world of contemporary Egyptian cinema in search of encounters, replies and confrontations with images and reality. Best of ECAL,10.10–21.12.2007,Gallery l elac, ECAL Conjointement à la sortie du livre «ECAL: A Success Story in Art and Design», l ECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne présente sa première exposition à l elac (l espace lausannois d art contemporain) dans les nouveaux murs de l ECAL à Renens. Cet événement propose des sculptures, peintures, photographies, vidéos ou encore objets de professeurs, intervenants et étudiants qui ont côtoyé l école depuis 1995. Le choix des pièces a été opéré par John M Armleder, artiste mondialement connu et professeur à l ECAL. Nul doute que Renens n avait encore jamais pu s enorgueillir d accueillir une exposition d art et de design avec des personnalités d un tel renom. Une semaine seulement après avoir inauguré son nouveau bâtiment, l ECAL présente «ECAL: A Success Story in Art and Design». Une exposition qui retrace les douze dernières années de cette institution – depuis que Pierre Keller en est le directeur (de 1995 à 2011) – et dont le choix des pièces a été confié à John M Armleder. Ainsi, le célèbre plasticien a pu orchestrer dans l espace lausannois d art contemporain (l elac) un choix d artistes reconnus qui confère à cette exposition un niveau mondial en art et en design. On y retrouve des peintures, dessins, gravure, sculptures, photographies, vidéos, affiches ou installations d Olivier Mosset, Steven Parrino, Luc Andrié, Pierre Keller, Philippe Decrauzat, Karim Noureldin, Stéphane Dafflon, Francis Baudevin, John Tremblay, Sylvie Fleury, François Morrelet, Fabrice Gygi, Pierre Vadi, Jacques Bonnard, Bertrand Lavier, Gloria Friedmann, David Monnet, Aloïs Godinat, Ignazio Bettua, Ugo Rondinone, Inez Van Lamsweerde, Xavier Veilhan, John M Armleder. Luc Aubort, Stéphane Kropf, Laurent Pache, Cyprien Gaillard, Denis Savary, Christian Pahud, Jean Otth, Valentin Carron, Geoffrey Cottenceau ou encore M/M Paris. Le design industriel y est également bien représenté avec des projets typiquement made in ECAL comme The Festive Kitchen ou ex-écal, ainsi que des réalisations de Nicolas Le Moigne, Alexis Geogacopoulos, Vladimir Jaccard, Big-game, Tetê Knecht. Cet événement accompagne la parution du livre ECAL: A Success Story in Art and Design, édité par JRP RINGIER.

Philippe Malouin People
Philippe Malouin

ECAL resident at La Becque - Spring semester 2024

Based in London, Philippe Malouin is a British-Canadian product designer and interior architect born in 1982. A graduate of the Design Academy in Eindhoven, he also studied at the École nationale supérieure de création industrielle in Paris and at the Université de Montréal.

In his practice, Malouin celebrates geometric shapes, natural materials, imperfections and contrasts, creating avant-garde objects that have won him numerous awards, including Designer of the Future from W Hotels and Best Use of Material from Wallpaper. He is particularly renowned for creating art objects, installations and furniture such as tables, rugs, chairs and lights.

Thaddé Comar People
Thaddé Comar

Born in 1993, Thaddé Comar is a French-Swiss photographer who graduated from ECAL in 2018. His work explores contemporary social and political dynamics, with a particular focus on protest movements. He has dedicated several years to documenting the Black Bloc movement in Paris. In 2022, he published How Was Your Dream? (Mörel Books), a book on the protests in Hong Kong between June and October 2019, addressing new forms of insurrection in surveillance societies. His photographs have been regularly exhibited, including at the Rencontres d'Arles, the Photographic Center of Geneva, Art Basel, and the 7L Bookstore. He currently lives in Paris.

Emmanuel Crivelli People
Emmanuel Crivelli

EXECAL Resident at La Becque in july 2022 - BA Graphic Design graduate 2008

Art director and graphic designer, Emmanuel Crivelli explores the editorial world by questioning paper and digital formats. After his studies in graphic design at ECAL, he works with Philippe Jarrigeon and Sylvain Menétrey for the magazine Dorade - "Revue galante, photographie et formes critiques", which won the Swiss Design Awards in 2012. He then creates, in collaboration with an editorial team, POV Paper and POV magazine, which deal with gender and sexualities. In 2018, he won the mandate from the Federal Office of Culture to create the visual identity of the Swiss Design Awards until 2021. This project becomes a digital editorial content lab, with interactive articles, talks and live chats.

Mélanie Courtinat People

EXECAL Resident at La Becque in August 2021 - BA Media & Interaction Design graduate 2017

Mélanie Courtinat (BA Media & Interaction Design), artist and interactive, creates virtual spaces and speculative environments using mediums such as virtual and augmented reality, video games or 3D. By questioning the technical and narrative particularities of the technologies she uses, she actively participates in the mediation and perpetuation of these mediums in the art world. During her residency, she will develop a reflection on digital creation tools and the representation of natural elements to create a series of open access digital materials.

Loucia Carlier People
Loucia Carlier

Loucia Carlier is a French artist and editor, born in 1992 in Paris. She graduated with a Master’s in Visual Arts – European Art Ensemble from the École cantonale d'art de Lausanne in 2017. She was awarded the Révélation Émerige grant in 2020, was a resident at Villa Belleville in 2023, and is currently in residence at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris.

Images, symbols, objects, and texts are assembled through embossing, printing, and modeling on the surface of her works, blending sculpture and painting. These compositions form hybrid landscapes of a post-humanity undergoing reorganization. A network of archetypal images and organic elements swell and work from within each of her pieces, where the possibility of a subjective, relative, and resilient cosmology opens up through ruptures. The interdependence of the body and environment is not necessarily the most uplifting in the era of capitalism, patriarchy, and ecological crisis; her work tells the underlying anxieties of a generation born in the 90s. Caves, parts of bodies, architectures mixed with medical, ufological, or psychedelic imagery are printed and sculpted onto the surface of her pieces. Sometimes enhanced with makeup, her works act as a second skin: reactive to external aggressions and internal inflammations that one struggles to hide.

Her work is regularly featured in solo and group exhibitions (Le Nouveau Printemps in Toulouse, CAC Brétigny, Salon de Montrouge, Villa Belleville, Swiss Art Awards, Ateliers de la Ville de Marseille, Forde, Contemporary Art Center of Geneva, Villa Noailles, Villa Emerige, High Art, Ferme de la Chapelle, Wallriss, Hamlet Zurich, Art:Concept, Artgenève, Museum of Fine Arts of Lausanne…). In parallel to her artistic practice, she has co-directed the independent magazine Klima since 2018. Dedicated to the intersection of contemporary artistic creation, academic research, social sciences, politics, and activist knowledge, the magazine also develops through launches, study days, literary salons, exhibitions, and fairs (Voiture 14, Artorama Fair in Marseille, Octobre Numérique in Arles, Paris Internationale Fair, Salon de Normandy in Paris, Liste in Basel, Art Geneva Fair, Offprint Paris/London, The Salon Nada & The Community in Paris, Forde Geneva…).

Jonas Berthod People

Deputy Research & Development

Dr Jonas Berthod is a researcher, lecturer and deputy to the Research and Development sector at ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne (HES-SO), where he has been teaching since 2013. Based in London, he also serves as a lecturer at Kingston School of Art and co-organises the yearly exhibition “Behind the Books”. He previously worked as a graphic designer in London and Switzerland.

Nabil Ayouch People

Nabil Ayouch est l’un des plus importants cinéastes de sa génération. Son premier long-métrage, «Mektoub», devient en 1997 le premier film à représenter le Maroc aux Oscars. «Ali Zaoua, Prince de la rue» (2000), «Much Loved» (2016) et «Razzia » (2018) connaissent également une brillante carrière internationale. Nabil Ayouch est également à l’origine de la Coalition marocaine pour la diversité culturelle (2003) et de Meda Films Development (2006) qui aide les producteur·trices et scénaristes du sud de la Méditerranée.

Marie Cornil

EXECAL Resident at La Becque in August 2022 - BA Industrial Deisgn graduate 2018

After graduating with a BA in Visual Arts from HEAD-Geneva, Marie Cornil completed a bachelor's degree in Industrial Design at ECAL/University of Art and Design in Lausanne. After her graduation in 2018, she exhibited her work at Villa Noailles as part of the Festival International Design Parade. She then joined, for two years, the studio Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec in Paris. She now works in collaboration with Alexandre Willaume. Together with French artisans and manufacturers, they develop a research project on imagining elements in which to live and interact, seeking to cultivate the multiplicity of their imbrications.

Iskander Guetta People
Iskander Guetta

EXECAL Resident at La Becque in July 2021 - BA Industrial design graduate 2018

Iskander Guetta (BA Industrial Design) explored the reception and housing conditions of homeless people with his diploma project ABRI+, finalist at the Swiss Design Awards 2019. He undertook a trip to Morocco to explore design practices outside the neo-liberal Western world and an internship at the SELCO Foundation in Bangalore (IND). It allowed him to gain a better understanding of design in the Global South, in order to better perceive the intersecting issues of ecology and decolonization, which he tends to bring to bear in his practice. At La Becque, he will explore the potential and use of atomic shelters in the face of contemporary urban issues (project developed in collaboration with Tanguy Caversaccio, architect).

Brian Roettinger People
Brian Roettinger

ECAL resident at La Becque - Spring semester 2023

As a partners at Perron–Roettinger, designer Brian Roettinger has worked on creative projects with some of the world’s biggest brands and musicians. Roettinger’s work is an uncanny union of punk ideology with a conceptually driven mode of modernist design. He frequently employs architectural strategies such as repetition and structure, while subverting this sense of order by manipulating the production process in unexpected or “wrong” ways (think pulling the sheet out of the printer before it is done). He continues to work with a wide variety of artists and brands taking an holistic approach to the design process from idea to completion. His work is diverse spanning album packaging, publications, branding, campaigns, and product design. He has been nominated for numerous awards included three Art Direction Grammy’s for album packaging.

Sabrina Tarasoff People
Sabrina Tarasoff

Strategic Project Manager

Born in Finland in 1991, is a writer and art critic based in Paris. Her writings have appeared in numerous prestigious publications such as Art Forum, Los Angeles Review of Books, X-TRA Contemporary Art Journal, and C Magazine. Her essays on theoretical criticism, literature and visual culture have also appeared in the catalogs and books of Inventory Press, American Art Catalogues, and Semiotext(e). Tarasoff's area of research focuses on the cultural milieu of Los Angeles in the 1980s, and was presented at the Hammer Museum Biennial in 2020, a version; a book entitled “Fantasyworld” containing his writings is currently in development. Tarasoff is also the editor of poet Bob Flanagan's first anthology “Fun To Be Dead: The Poems of Bob Flanagan”, published by Kristina Kite Gallery and Pep Talk.

Claire Fitzegerald People

Claire FitzGerald is an Anglo-Swiss art historian and curator. Her PhD thesis (University of Warwick, 2012-16) addressed the reinsertion, within art history, of artistic practices by women artists of the Birmingham School of Arts & Crafts. Since entering the museum field in 2016, she has notably worked as a curator for the Government Art Collection (GAC) in London (2018-21). In 2023, she joined the jury for the City of Geneva’s Berthoud, Lissingol-Chevalier and Galland bursaries. She was nominated head curator of the Ariana Museum, Geneva, in March 2024.

Charles Engman People
Charles Engman

Based in Brooklyn, New York, Charles Engman is an artist, photographer, educator, and creative director for the sustainable fashion brand Collina Strada. His multidisciplinary practice examines the social and emotional dimensions of imagery and hyper-visibility in contemporary culture, with a focus on the body as a site of mediation between the self and otherness.

Engman’s recent work integrates generative AI, positioning him at the forefront of exploring how technology shapes and transforms the visual and emotional dynamics of contemporary life. His use of AI questions how disembodied technologies mediate representations of the body, visual identity, and cultural production, offering a critical insight into the evolving relationships between labor, capital, and creativity.

Engman is the author of three books: MOM (2020), a long-term collaborative project with his mother that explores representation and intimacy; Hello Chaos: A Love Story – The Disorder of Seeing and Being Seen (2024), a genre-defying critical theory book examining contemporary visual culture; and Cursed (2024), an artist monograph entirely created with generative AI.

Alongside his creative projects, Engman works as a commercial image maker, primarily in the fashion industry, using this practice to research, explore, and engage with the role of advertising in shaping social space and contemporary notions of the self. For his residency at La Becque, he will deepen these themes by developing a new body of work that reflects his ongoing research into image-making, the body, and the economies of visibility.
