ECAL x Fondation Martin Bodmer - Scripts of the World,24.01–20.03.2022,Fondation Martin Bodmer, Cologny (GE) ECAL / University of Art and Design Lausanne and the Fondation Martin Bodmer have joined forces to celebrate typographic creation and the scripts of the world. ECAL will present original projects in contemporary typography and graphic design, from its Bachelor Graphic Design and Master Type Design programmes, comparing them with Fondation Martin Bodmer s UNESCO listed heritage through a series of lectures, events and workshops on Sunday afternoons on 6 February, 27 February and 20 March 2022. 6 February 2022, 14:00-18:00 The Scripts of Aram: Syriac-Aramaic Typefaces (FR/EN) Registration At the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees, the Switzerland and Liechtenstein office of the UNHCR, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, collaborated with the students of the ECAL Master Type Design on a case: the Syriac script. Historically used to transcribe languages over a vast geographical area, Syriac is today mainly used as the liturgical script of Eastern Christians. Speakers of Modern Aramaic languages live in Syria, Lebanon, Turkey, Iraq, but compose mainly a worldwide diaspora. While only a few digital fonts exist, providing contemporary and innovative typefaces would contribute to broadening the possibilities for the language to thrive, as well as to cultivate community ties. This day proposes to celebrate Syriac writing and Aramaic culture through the collections of the Martin Bodmer Foundation, typography projects of the ECAL and various reflections on writing, its power, its relationship to politics, language and identity. Conferences 14:30 Politics and type design, Syriac script: a case study (FR) by Matthieu Cortat, head of MA Type Design, ECAL 15:00 About the publication "Aram" (FR) by Elena Baranowski, student MA Type Design, ECAL 15:15 Syriac in the collections of the Fondation Martin Bodmer (FR) by Nicolas Ducimetière, vice-director, Fondation Martin Bodmer 15:45 Break 16:15 Critical Regionalism in Type Design - A survey of moments in history when social, political, economic systems change in parallel with typography (EN) by Nicolas Bernklau, assistant MA Type Design, ECAL 16:35 Aramean communities in Switzerland today (EN) by Melki Toprak, president, and Tony Ürek, secretary, Federation of Arameans in Switzerland 17:00 Concert of the ARAM Ensemble, A view on Syriac traditions, led by Jalal Polus Gajo, soloist, with Ammar Ai Toumi, percussionist Carles Dorador, oud Liqaa Marooki, soloist Marie Wahida, soloist Fadi Wahida, Qanun preceded by an introduction by Véronique Nebel, board member, Laus Plena Foundation (ANG) Workshop 14:00 - 18:00 Gutenberg press with Yvan Hostettler Syriac-Aramaic script with the Aramean Federation of Switzerland 27 February 2022, 14:00-18:00 (FR) Typographic Art: From the Major Names to the Revival Registration This day will take you through the history of typeface design, from the major names to the collection of the Martin Bodmer Foundation, then confronting it with the contemporary practice of revival. With this technique, a typeface is digitally redesigned from a historical typeface, or serves as a template from which a new design is developed, more or less faithfully to its source. The success of these digital fonts and their distribution are interesting mechanisms, which will also be discussed, mirroring the long history of typography, reflected in the collections of the Martin Bodmer Foundation. DNA Second year BA Industrial Design students had to formulate their own brief instead of getting one from their teachers. In the project s introduction, they were assigned the task of introspectively mapping their own design DNA by contemplating the question: What defines my essence as a designer? They introduced a clear brief related to their own fascinations and relevant topics in the field of design and in the time we live in. Then thes students developed a concept for a product from an original idea and artistic vision. The results are expressed in the form of products, pieces of furnitures, accessories, proposing a new vision and a new way of producing. The areas of interest are diverse, spacing from open-source projects to process fascination.

Book making workshop

Junkyard Diving "Form follows function" is an expression attributed to the modernist architect Louis Sullivan. It is a statement that is quite relevant to industrial design. On the other hand, form can sometimes also determine function in a process of reverse exploration. During the workshop with Philippe Malouin, students were encouraged to look for new functions inspired by forms found in a metal recycling center. In this process, random discoveries and associations were made to generate a new and surprising vocabulary of forms.

Nicolas Bernklau – Resial / Strength in Fragility Strength in Fragility is a dialogue between fashion (Anna Deller-Yee, RCA) and type design (Nicolas Bernklau, ECAL). To find the intersections of the two design fields, shapes are explored and brought to life: from 2D to 3D, shape to object, printable to wearable. A publication showcases a common shape pool made up of type letterings as a foundation for the development of fashion silhouettes, woven materials and prints around themes of individuality, strength and vulnerability. To enhance the feeling of the project, the accompanying sans serif typeface family Resial was designed. Resial balances the functionality of condensed Swiss/German typefaces from the early 20th century and idiosyncrasies found while researching Latin typefaces in the Japanese graphic context.

Simone Nicola Filippo – For My Girl and My World, Love From Jamie XXX My work visually explores themes of loneliness, para-social relationships and emotional frustration. These near-monochromes in oil evoke images of distant memories, similar to the stains one might find on the inside of a pillow after years of sleep and cold sweat, memories of online interactions, visual summaries from a mass of digital images that leave us numb until the next morning in an aseptic mental void. References to video games, social media influencers, and ASMR role-plays blend into a cloudy mass, similar in its lack of clarity to sketches that try to illustrate paranormal events or sleep paralysis.

Matias Carlier – Fever Two young skateboarders decide to go to a party, their evening gets complicated. Fiction / 22 min Synopsis La fièvre is a short fiction film about two young skateboarders, Aleister and Joana, who will try to declare their love for each other throughout the night. This declaration is put to the test by the different obstacles they meet on their way, leading them to wander the streets of Lausanne until the early morning. Comment For this project, I wanted to work with non-professional actors in order to anchor the fiction in contemporary reality, to film young people in their daily lives as teenagers, without distorting them. The idea was not to fantasise about a geographical or temporal elsewhere, but to anchor the characters journey in the here and now. Matias Carlier

Nicolas Ponce – L action se passe dans une rue, dans un champ, et dans un bois Ulysses is hidden behind the fir trees, Raphaël in the tool shed, Timothé in the middle of the corn, and me, under the window.

Excerpts from Master Type Design theses AUTHOR: Simona Alina Andone TITLE: The Aura of Type Design The Aura of Type Design stems from the necessity of creating a critical discourse around the type design discipline. In which cultural and social settings is type design embedded? This thesis explores some of the contexts in which type design manifests itself – from Instagram to institutions, exhibitions, archives, and so on. What effects do these manifestations have on perceptions about how type design works? ---- AUTHOR: Romain Tronchin TITLE: To be seen not read SUBTITLE: The formal expression of typography Without even being conscious of it, I have always been interested in typography and its shapes. When I was a kid, I was fascinated by the numbers on football shirts. Later, it was graffiti, with its illegible letters. Today, it is the typefaces of designers like Herb Lubalin, Jean Alessandrini or Zuzana Licko that awaken my interest. All these typefaces have one thing in common: they are typefaces that are not meant to be read, but seen. Their formal aspect comes first, before their functionality. So, we can see these expressive typefaces as images before considering them as tools. This sentence by Herb Lubalin sums up this phenomenon well: “Sometimes you sacrifice legibility to increase impact.” ---- AUTHOR: Marcel Saidov TITLE: The Telephone Directories of Total Design and Ladislas Mandel SUBTITLE: Modernist Internationalism and Cultural Identity By comparing the iconic phone book by Total Design with the typefaces and their application in telephone directories by Ladislas Mandel, I want to create a dialogue between traditionalism and modernism; internationalism and cultural identity. I will not only examine the differing design approaches, but also compare two opposing philosophies. In addition, I would like to investigate which kinds of technical knowledge gleaned from the design of telephone directories and their typefaces can still be of use today. By comparing two opposing ideologies of the past century, I will try to conduct a contemporary discourse on type and culture. ---- AUTHOR: Alberto Malossi TITLE: Extraordinary Gentleman SUBTITLE: The typefaces of Giovanni Mardersteig History is something that I have always been keenly interested in. Luckily, I found a way to channel it into my work, which I feel is very much based on historical awareness. Especially as a type designer, the saying “standing on the shoulders of giants” is something that I think about daily: I see my practice as bound to both enshrine the memory of those who came before me, and to build upon their work. That is why I felt a deep connection with the typefaces of Giovanni Mardersteig (1892-1977). His work was always aware of the past, while somehow completely contemporary. ---- AUTHOR: Paul Christ TITLE: Pixels, Geometry, Theosophy, Philosophy In the following thesis, I will be taking a deeper look at geometry, theosophy and the pixel in the oeuvre of JLM Lauweriks (1864–1932). At the same time, I will reflect on the relationship between mysticism, philosophy and geometry in contemporary design through an interview with Dimitri Bruni from NORM, while conducting a short investigation of Jurriaan Schrofer s work. ---- AUTHOR: Chiachi Chao TITLE: Type Design in the Zeitgeist Letters are shapes with intentions. A typeface is an instrument built to convey meanings and information. The design criteria for a typface are clear: it must facilitate the efficiency of the reading process, allowing the eyes to identify the image shape, then glide through the line as fast as possible. Since ‘reading and ‘seeing are two fundamentally different physical mechanisms, the functionality (readability and legibility) in types is always more important than the ‘style of letter-shapes given that text is meant for reading. Its form is determined by the condition in which the typeface intends to be applied. With this premise, type design draws a clear line between graphic design in which personal expression plays a significant role. ---- AUTHOR: Nicolas Bernklau TITLE: Critical Regionalism in Type Design SUBTITLE: A survey of moments in history when social, political and economic systems change in parallel with typography Typography is a substantial part of visual identities and thus a means of identification for countries, corporations and communities. Type can be used as a transporter of aims and values. It can provide orientation and a sense of purpose. Once you see a certain type connected to a particular era, style or area it immediately evokes certain feelings and tells you its narrative. It is a very powerful means. So on the one hand, whenever there is change, type can play a leading role in expressing this change and on the other hand, a new type can be introduced in order to cause change. Examples of such changes could be: A political ideology is associated with a certain style of type, a country switches its script from Arabic to Latin or a type design studio designs a multi-script typeface. All these changes are triggered by different intrinsic or extrinsic motivations and reasons: e.g. historical, economic, political, educational, aesthetic or modernisation reasons. In these cases type is used to embody these changes and socio-political shifts as a transporter of ideas and values. The thesis consists of three parts, the transition from Fraktur to roman, the world political topic of changing type through alphabet shifts as well as internationality in type design today with the topic of expansion. ---- AUTHOR: Benedetta Bovani TITLE: The role of intertitles SUBTITLE: From a typographic necessity to a means of expression Intertitles have been a topic of discussion throughout the more or less thirty years (1895–1930) in which they were largely used. When one would talk about these elements, it was usually to criticise them or to highlight their flaws. Indeed, intertitles were controversial. The use of the word, and especially the written word, in cinema – then a silent medium – was by most seen as unnecessary, even dangerous. Admitting that writing was necessary to the success of cinema was like admitting that silence was a deficit. Nevertheless, intertitles slowly became an essential element, that even today has left its trace in modern films. The goal of this master thesis is to investigate and map the use of intertitles. Starting from their inception, when they were just a typographic necessity, to their prime – when they played an active role in the narration of movies and represented a means of expression as important as picture itself. ---- AUTHOR: Anne Seseke TITLE: Barbara Radice & Fragments of Terrazzo (1988–1995) Ever since I discovered post-modernist objects, I have fostered an ambivalent relationship to them. Their shape, patterns and materials. The more I researched, the more I found interesting writings, interviews and a lot of lesser-known projects. I scraped the shiny, plastic, colourful surface and discovered thought-provoking reflections on society. In this master thesis I will approach my topic in a manner similar to the way in which Barbara Radice edited Terrazzo magazine (1988–1995): strong research roots tied together by a spiderweb of associations. ---- AUTHOR: Antonio D Elisiis TITLE: The Eldorado of Legibility SUBTITLE: Optical sizes, variable fonts and accessibility in the digital environment Designing aesthetically pleasing fonts that remain legible in various situations of use. Achieving this difficult balance has always been the ultimate goal in type design. Sought by punchcutters first, and later by the most modern type designers. These applied two fundamental practices to character design: optical size, and optical correction. I will analyse both practices and how they have evolved over time – especially with the change of various technologies (printing, information support and visualisation, tools that allow the design of characters, etc.). I will also analyse how optical corrections were applied, and why. ---- AUTHOR: Lucile Billot TITLE: Colophons etc. SUBTITLE: A collection of colophons, from medieval to contemporary, and the related stories they tell This master thesis focuses on the narratives of colophons, and some related paratextual devices, such as design notes, acknowledgements etc. The thesis builds bridges between different periods, highlighting (for example) relationships between medieval and contemporary colophons. At first sight, colophons seem to be a quite dry part of any book, as they only deal with credits. But they are not simply the ‘finishing stroke of a book. They also give clues and backdrops, both about the book itself (its content) and its context (in terms of design / production / circulation). This thesis explores the colophons evolution and transformations, as well as the contextual stories that are hidden in them, and the effect they can have on our understanding of a book.

Antonio D Elisiis – Hierax Antiqua Hierax Antiqua is a contemporary typeface family composed of 24 styles with text and display cut, suitable for editorial publication and identity projects. The typeface is inspired by an ancient book printed in Venice around 1750, with various punches cut in different periods (1550 – 1780). Hence the aim of the project is to capture the spirit of Renaissance and Baroque types by analysing the works of Nicolas Jenson, Francesco Griffo, Claude Garamont, Pierre Haultin, Robert Granjon, Hendrik van den Keere, Christoffel van Dijck, Nicholas Kis, Simon de Colines, Guillaume Le Bé, Pierre-Simon Fournier le Jeune and Giambattista Bodoni. Hierax Antiqua aims to crystallise this era with an added contemporary feel through rigorous digital design.

Exhibition "Glowstone",21.04–07.05.2021,Gallery l elac From 22 April to 7 May 2021 at the Galerie l elac, the exhibition "Glowstone" presents projects by students of the ECAL Master Fine Arts programme, initiated during a workshop organised extramuros at Espace Sébeillon by artist Neïl Beloufa. The students first action upon arriving at the satellite space has been to rename it "Flowstone". As a defining guideline for their proposal, the group then opted for horizontal modes of production in the making of their projects: the founding of collectives, the absence of a unique organizing figure. In the aftermath of the workshop, Flowstone morphed into a space where the production of ongoing projects cohabited with a series of ephemeral performances and shows. "Glowstone" presents an archive of the off campus experience alongside projects launched at Flowstone, at times modified for the context of their current exhibition at Gallery l elac. A variety of projects, often created by at least four hands, can be discovered in the gallery: paintings, sculptures, video installations and sound pieces echo each other - all plunged in a cleverly orchestrated play of light. Carhartt WIP × ECAL Earlier this year, Carhartt WIP (for Work in Progress) teamed up with ECAL, inviting Bachelor Photography students to interpret in their own way some of the emblematic pieces of the American clothing brand, which develops its own collections from the original Carhartt work clothes. The students, led by art director Nicolas Poillot, produced an editorial report, which was included in the latest issue of "WIP Magazine" published by Carhartt WIP and some of whose images will be exhibited at the ECAL on the occasion of the launch of this book.

La Prairie x ECAL collaboration,22–25.01.2021,ECAL & La Prairie Instagram As part of the partnership with ECAL, Swiss Luxury House La Prairie has collaborated with students of the Master of Advanced Studies in Design for Luxury and Craftsmanship programme, under the creative leadership of Sabine Marcelis. Gal Bulka from Israel, Paula Chacartegui from Spain, Chia-Ling Chang from Taiwan, Apolline Morel-Lab from France, Fernando Rivero from Mexico, and Charlotte Therre from Switzerland distinguished themselves as part of this collaboration with La Prairie. They were invited to design an object of design that expresses the brand s vision of Swissness – the purity, precision and timelessness inherent to the land of the house s origins. Using materials native to Switzerland, each student expressed a unique interpretation that captures the imagination. Collectively, their works embody an unmistakable Swiss aesthetic and, as citizens of the world, they bring a singular perspective to the notion of Swissness. The result is a combination of sculptural, kinetic, interactive and time-infused works that express diverse and creative interpretations of Swiss aesthetics. The works tell an emotional, immersive story through these installations. The six students and their works will be featured in an Instagram exhibition hosted on La Prairie s page from Thursday 21 January 2021. The winning student will receive a grant from La Prairie to use towards launching their design career. The winning piece will be selected by two parties: by a jury composed of design experts from ECAL and La Prairie and a call for votes from the public over Instagram. The final result will be announced on Monday 25 January 2021.

Toc Toc Toc! For this project, the 1st year students were asked to design a handle or door knob. They had to focus mainly on the part on which the hand rests when closing, opening, pulling or pushing a door. They were free to choose the type of handle, as long as it was compatible with an existing mechanism. The context of the object as well as its use and ergonomics were aspects that were at the heart of their project.

Book making workshop The workshop is a complement to the Photobook semester project during which the first year students, tutored by graphic designer Nicolas Polli, learned to think of the photobook as an object. Each student developed their sequence and made creative choices that led to the production of a dummy. Nicolas El Kadiri – Jim With the rise of street workout, appropriating urban infrastructure to do body toning exercises is becoming increasingly common. “Jim” is a street furniture project that seeks to incorporate training equipment within the urban landscape in a more fluid manner than outdoor gymnastic and callisthenic parks and whose use remains open to all. The very rationalised shape is designed to enable a certain number of poly-articular movements thanks to the steel tube grips on each side and two platform levels made of ash wood, while providing multiple seating positions.

Figure Libre Figure libre is an industrial design project realized in correlation with the thesis topic of the 3rd year students. They were advised to choose a field that the students would like to pursue after their studies. This free exercise allowed each student to express themselves on the subject of their choice. Whether it was about furniture, mobility, connected objects or so many other possible subjects, each subject treated seriously became fascinating.

ECAL at the Youth Olympic Games – Lausanne 2020,09–22.01.2020,Lausanne On the occasion of the Youth Olympic Games – Lausanne 2020 , ECAL particpates in several projects. On the occasion of the Youth Olympic Games – Lausanne 2020, ECAL particpates in several projects: --- Design of the cauldron, medal trays and podiums The cauldron, the medal trays and the podiums are three of the most symbolic elements of the Olympic Games. Second-year Industrial Design Bachelor s students from the ECAL were tasked with designing them. The students had to meet certain operational constraints and technical requirements: The cauldron must be able to be supplied with wood pellets, the result of a partnership between several organisations in the Vaud region, including the Lignum Vaud, which brings together all the regional players in the wood sector. This ecological innovation makes this cauldron the most eco-responsible in the history of the Olympic Games. It must also be removable and an integral part of the Games legacy. The podiums would have to be assembled outside at the last minute, often on uneven ground. They needed to be solid, light and large enough for several athletes. The medal trays had to be big enough to hold both medals and mascots. Cauldron Design: ECAL (Bachelor Industrial Design) Student: François Lafortune Production: C-FOR! + Ecole de la construction This cauldron project took inspiration from “freeskiing” culture, seeking to reflect it in both style and substance. Freeskiing is the world of skateparks and snowparks, with which many young people are very familiar. The installation comprises a mini jump and a ramp, with the cauldron placed at the top. The project s designer, François, envisaged that it would be an integral part of the Opening Ceremony and that the cauldron could be lit by a freerider. After Lausanne 2020, the installation is set to be converted into part of a permanent skatepark for the people of Lausanne. Podium Design: ECAL (Bachelor Industrial Design) Students: Louis Bétin + Theo Luvisotto + Estelle Rougerie Production: Ecole de la construction The podiums juxtapose the outlines of three mountain ranges where the competitions are being held: the Jura mountains, the Vaud Alps and the mountains of St Moritz. Five performances will take place in public on January 9, 11, 12, 18 and 19, 2020 at 6 p.m. "Bodies in fusion with the city", it is from this strong image that Nicolas Musin directed BodyCity, a contemporary show questioning the relationship of young generations to the city. On an open-air stage representing a city in constant mutation, more than 50 performers aged between 9 and 30 years will cross their disciplines from January 9, bringing together urban arts and sports suchas skateboarding, BMX, rollerblading, scooter, parkour and dance. Imagined within the framework of Lausanne en Jeux!, this show is above all a work of youth carried by art schools and urbandisciplines training centers established in the Lausanne conurbation. BodyCity was thus able to bring together different Lausanne actors such as the students of the ECAL (conception of video images) of the HEMU (composition of the original music and recording of the soundtrack), thedancers of the Ecole-Atelier Rudra Béjart (dance and percussion), JDS Events (hip hop, breakdance) aswell as the riders of La Fièvre and the tracers of X-Trem Move. A meeting between different cultures and disciplines that the director Nicolas Musin has managed to reunite in order to offer a unique and unprecedented show in Lausanne. The mapping of the show was thus created by the students of the Visual Communication Department (BA Graphic Design, BA Photography, BA Media & Interaction Design) under the direction of Vincent Jacquier, Angelo Benedetto, Jean-Vincent Simonet and Mitch Paone while editing was managed by Amaury Hamon and Clément Lambelet.

A class of 12 students from the Photography Master at the ECAL/University of Art and Design of Lausanne, in residence at Casa Corti in Pellio, Val d Intelvi (Italy), elaborated the concepts of utopia and community. Identifying the malaise of a generation trapped in social networks, confused between reality and the virtual sphere, and in need of establishing new values, the group developed a range of different strategies: morning meditation sessions, walks to Monte Generoso, shared meals and discussions to produce photographs and videos which, while gradually shifting away from reality, reach imaginary dimensions that oscillate between utopia and dystopia, figuration and abstraction. --- Students Emidio Battipaglia Robin Bervini Jasmine Deporta Anja Karolina Furrer Alessia Gunawan Christian Harker Johanna Hullár Philipp Klak Doruk Kumkumoglu Jelly Luise Igor Pjörrt Gedvile Tamosiunaite Curator Milo Keller Assistants Florian Amoser Calum Douglas Graphic Design Nicolas Polli biennaleimmagine.ch https://casacorti.org/ Utopia is invisible; only utopians can see it. BRUTAL 003 To celebrate the Paris Photo 2019 edition, the Bachelor Photography students of ECAL, under the artistic direction of Nicolas Poillot, translated the music of the producer IKAZ BOI into images. The visuals, sometimes smooth and neat, sometimes dark and rough, were produced by listening to the new project BRUTAL 3: an intimate album oscillating between romance and darkness composed with instrumental tracks only. Exclusively, 500 unpublished and numbered vinyl copies were created especially for this occasion. For two days, ECAL invests the Au Roi gallery, inviting spectators to a sound and visual journey, in an ephemeral sensory space generated by a synchronous video installation. Aesthetics of Sustainability Aesthetics of Sustainability aims to explore and define the aesthetics of a new generation of sustainable materials. Sustainability is one of the most important topics of the 21st century. Design, as a discipline of innovation, must play a leading role in optimising the environmental impact of all by-products and processes in the production of designed goods. All too often, most people take a stereotypical view of “sustainable products”. They are often associated with dirty colours and unpleasant aesthetics, owing to the use of second-grade, recycled, “primitive”, natural or non-processed materials. Furthermore, they are usually associated with higher prices or inferior quality. Aesthetics of Sustainability aims to explore and define the aesthetics of a new generation of sustainable materials. The goals of the project are to push boundaries, explore aesthetics and define a contemporary language of sustainable materials and products through a systematic process of investigation, experimentation, creation and development within the context of product design. The low impact of products is not only necessary, but it is also about to become a unique selling point for manufacturers. The tipping point when eco-friendly materials become more easily available and financially competitive on a larger scale will soon be reached. The outcome of the project is a series of 14 dossiers on the explored materials as well as mock-ups and prototypes of the resulting products. The project offers a future generation of designers an array of operational tools and knowledge which explain how to discover, analyse and process seminal materials, how to work best with their qualities and how to turn them into functional yet aesthetically intriguing objects.Main applicant sECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne (project leader)Research team (senior researcher) (professor) (professor) (research assistant) (research assistant) (photographer) (photographer)Visiting lecturersYves Corminboeuf, Alexandre Echasseriau, Adam Fairweather, Beat Karrer, Chris Lefteri, Yves Leterrier, Mieke Meijer, Axel Norlander, Martin PostlerStudents1st-year MA students in Product Design, ECAL, class of 2018-2019: , , , , , , , ,, , , , , Periodseptember 2017 – july 2019Supported byECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne Strategic fund of the University of Applied Sciences Western Switzerland (HES-SO RCDAV)DisseminationPublication Thilo Alex Brunner, Aesthetics of sustainability.
