Enabled by Design Project
Enabled by Design

Enabled by Design Enabled by Design is a joint research project between EPFL and ECAL, funded by Gebert Rüf Stiftung, which aims to foster collaboration between young entrepreneurs involved in technological projects and designers. Over recent years, EPFL has identified a genuine need for design expertise to successfully transform laboratory technologies into products that are available to users. Design is now a crucial resource in innovatory projects because of its user focus, strategic vision, iterative methodology and creativity. Collaboration with designers offers added value to products/services and allows the young entrepreneurs to reduce uncertainty, validate market opportunities and communicate a coherent and persuasive message to potential customers and investors. The research team has created a web-based platform to create links between entrepreneurs and designers seeking to collaborate on technological projects. The platform offers different design missions (UX/UI, industrial design, graphic design, video, animation and photography), displays the findings from a variety of collaborative projects and provides a series of tools and articles to facilitate collaboration. There is currently a design center within the EPFL Startup Unit which offers this service to start ups on an ongoing basis and seeks to transform emerging technologies into usable products.Main applicantsECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne (project leader) (project leader)Research teamIsabel Casado PartnerEPFL/Federal Polytechnic University of Lausanne, Enable programmePeriodmarch 2019 – december 2020Supported byECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne Gebert Rüf StiftungDisseminationPublication medium.com/enabled-by-design Website enabledbydesign.ch Press N.a., Supporting entrepreneurs from lab to market, in Startupticker.ch, 6 September 2019 Tiago Peres, How to build a good prototype, in Technologist.eu, 2 January 2019

tip-toeing on blades of glory

Jelena Luise – tip-toeing on blades of glory It is inevitable that after a shared crisis, time will be described as having a before and after. Seeing everything burned to the ground may be disturbing at first but profound transformations are at work. This provides an opportunity to build something new - but what? Expanding on a moment of overwhelming climax, the scope of our imagination is put to the test. The old world is dying and the new world is struggling to be born. Now is the time of monsters.

Student s statement In order to ensure a sound that was both artistically and technically appropriate for my classmates graduation films, I worked closely with all departments involved in the production process, scouting locations, attending rehearsals, and choosing the right equipment. I also helped develop the narrative aspects of one of these projects by adding or taking away layers of music, moods and effects to the sound editing, and then refining this complex soundscape in the mix until it fitted imperceptibly into a larger context.

Student s statement As my major is Production, my diploma project was to produce a short film. Drawn by the film project of filmmaker Lucas Rubio, I decided to work together with him. I assisted him in the development of the scenario as well as in the preparation for shooting, selecting sets and the film crew. We had to overcome a few challenges during shooting: the weather conditions made logistics difficult and the cow, a central character, required special attention, adding more constraints to the project.

Director s statement After discovering my grandmother s home movies I sought to explore the filmic outlook of the women in my family and find out what shaped their lives on the most intimate scale. I assisted Monique as she began sorting out her whole life, her objects as well as her memories. Images of the past blended with those of her present daily life as I filmed in 16mm what I hoped to keep from her. The film anchors the presences that flow from my grandmother to her world. Santiago Chacón – Ecce homo (direction) Juan Antonio finds his father who is back home after a long absence. There, during the preparation of the most important religious festival of the city : the Ecce homo; father and son go to share in solitude, their hatreds for each other. santichacon91@gmail.com Fiction / 14min Synopsis José visits the main church in the city of Popayán, Colombia. The faithful prepare the most important celebration of the Catholic tradition of this place: the procession of the Ecce homo. After his visit, José returns home to his father, Juan Antonio who is back after a long absence. Life brings them together again, but something burns in him. Juan Antonio, a man of brute strength, no longer has the physical strength that accompanied him throughout his life. He and José, who grew up under his strong and conservative authority, will confront each other and let themselves be led by love and hate. During this meeting, José will allow himself for the first time to participate in the procession of the Ecce homo, which his father always forbade him to go to because the celebration is only for men and for Juan Antonio he is not a real man. Student s Commentaire Ecce Homo has gone through me deeply. From its conception, the project questioned me about my life, my ancestors and the city where I come from. It also questioned me about the way I relate to my family, to those around me; it made me understand with love their thoughts, but it also confronted them, opposed them and finally healed them. I want to make films to understand myself and the things around me and, from this understanding, make films as a way of healing, a remedy.

Fanny Reynaud – Nebraska (photography) The movie tells two stories that temporalities each other ultimately :  the encounter between a Swiss farmer and a Portuguese traveler, and a cow s pregnancy. Fiction / 20 min Synopsis Lost in the mountains, surrounded by his cows, André works hard on the farm. His daily life suddenly takes a new turn when he meets Rafaele, a passing man who speaks Portuguese. Not sharing the same language, the two men try to communicate by means other than speech. The illness of one of the cows, Nebraska, and the impending birth of her calf, unites them by a common sensitivity. Comment My major is Filming at ECAL s Film Studies Department and my graduation project therefore consisted of being director of photography for a film made by one of my fellow students, Lou-Théa Papaloïzos, and monitoring its production from the early days of preparing the film all the way to grading. The film in question tells the story of André, a farmer who raises Swiss cows, and Rafaele, a young Portuguese man crossing Switzerland to join his brother in Germany. The film subtly exposes the attraction that the two men feel for each other, bathed in the gentleness of the animal world. Fanny Reynaud

Rondinella Project
Rondinella

Nikita Merlini – Rondinella Staying with her mother after the fire, Sofia dreams of freedom. But the smell of smoke doesn t leave.. Fiction / 24 min / Mention Very good Synopsis After their house burns down, 18-year-old Sofia and her mother Carla have to live together in a small room at « The Little Swallow Hotel ». Sofia explores the building and meets new inspiring people. A thousand opportunities seem to open up for her. Carla, on the other hand, has to get used to the idea of her daughter leaving. In this closed-door environment, mother and daughter try to find a new balance in their relationship. Comment A mother and her daughter in a hotel room, a few meters from what was their house... gone up in smoke, taking their common past with them. The film, like a parenthesis in this place of transit that is "La Rondinella", where strangers meet and make memories, spaces of intimacy, a place where Sofia and her mother seek to rebuild, with the fragility and awkwardness that characterize the love that binds a daughter to her mother. Nikita invests the enclosed space by the character, Sofia, formidably interpreted by Elena Stoll, who bewitches us by her presence, her face at the same time babyish and feminine, and with whom Nikita continues his collaboration. Sofia draws us into her boredom, her expectations, her encounters, her solitary wanderings, but above all into her impulse for life and renewal. For Rondinella is also the portrait of this youth, full of dreams and obstacles. Nikita Merlini directs a sensitive, delicate, hypnotic film that seizes time. This vulnerable time. The time of childhood. The time of emancipation. The time of suffocating, yet unfailing love. Elsa Amiel / Director

Fiction / 20 min Comment A crime film set in Switzerland in the 1970s: the project for which I worked in close collaboration with Kimyan Flückigeris as promising as it is ambitious. The role of director of photography was both creative, involving a lot of freedom, and crucial in recreating the atmosphere of the 1970s. My dream of shooting with anamorphic lenses fitted well with the atmosphere of the film and enabled me to push the film s aesthetics quite far. After a lot of work, the project marked the pinnacle of my three years of studies which ended in an explosion of joy. Aurel Ganz

Coline Confort – Imperial (direction) At dawn, a cannon shatters the silence. The horses gallop across the beaten ground. Eva, 21, wants to join the Imperial HorseGuards, a historical reenactment of a Napoleonic regiment reserved for men. Documentary / 22 min Synopsis At dawn, a cannon shatters the silence. The horses gallop across the beaten ground. Eva, 21, wants to join the Imperial HorseGuards, a historical reenactment of a Napoleonic regiment reserved for men. In search of romance, she conceals her identity so that she can set her foot in the stirrup //(climb into the saddle), defying a 200-year-old ban. In this world of powder and smoke, Eva finally finds herself as she had always dreamed: ‘a handsome soldier beside a beautiful princess. Comment There are films that take a long time to be found, others that are born of an obviousness. One cannot say which is preferable. One cannot tell by looking at a film if its trajectory was eventful or peaceful. What counts is its impact on the present and the trace it leaves. Imperial has known versions of the script very different from the finished film. But these variants have nourished Coline s reflection, and this documentary carries within it all the others that were not made. Like layers. As if it had taken all these detours to finally manage to tell us a simple story, one of those that always thrill us, a story of desire and love. We can notice the great maturity in the management of the duration of the shots, the beauty of the frames and the attention given to the light. The almost feverish look at her character, while at the same time a great determination in the way she accompanies her. Eva s trajectory is simple and fluid in its accomplishment, and this simplicity (so difficult to achieve) is movingly beautiful. As can be the look of Eva on a young girl who is enough to put "a little glitter in her life". Laurent Larivière / Director

A Continent to Be Shaped Project
A Continent to Be Shaped

Lou Rais – A Continent to Be Shaped “A Continent to Be Shaped” is a journey through alternative teaching in architecture. The book is an atlas from the archives of EASA, an alternative school created by students in Liverpool in 1981. Forty years of workshop data from authors across the continent have been systematically edited in a non-chronological journey, revealing the students local ideologies and issues. No architecture is shown in order to stimulate the reader s imagination, the archive is revived and extended with laser-cut silhouettes then modulated into an umpteenth construction. Prix BCV

From Video Art to New Media: The Case of the Locarno VideoArt Festival (1980-2001) Project
From Video Art to New Media: The Case of the Locarno VideoArt Festival (1980-2001)

From Video Art to New Media: The Case of the Locarno VideoArt Festival (1980-2001) This research project looks into the shift from video art to new media, taking a major but little-studied event, the Locarno VideoArt Festival (1980-2001), as a case study: a pioneering space for broadcasting video art in Europe and a place for exploring electronic art which took place every year from 1980 to 2001 on Monte Verità. The analysis of the festival s archives and the creation of an exhibition of the works presented there highlight its pioneering role for those who wish to explore the history of information and communications theory. This research project seeks to refresh our understanding of video art and serves a dual purpose: as a piece of curatorial research to test the hypothesis that video art is characterised by its interactive quality, and a systematic enquiry into the nature and function of video art and new media. The research work spreading out over a three-year period combines tools developed in information and communications science with contributions from the history of video and electronic art, as well as contemporary art theory, curatorial studies, aesthetics and critical theory. As a result the project re-evaluates the place of Switzerland and Europe in the international video art network. Additionally, the previously unpublished festival s archives, the audio-visual documentation of the seminars and our recorded interviews with the festival s major artists are published on the project s dedicated website. The curatorial project, which takes place at the Elisarion in Minusio, is centred around the idea of a virtualisation of video art through computer-generated images and the internet. The core ideas behind the research are thus combined with the exhibition medium in order to assess their coherence.Main applicantECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne (project leader)Research teamDr Adeena Mey (researcher) Maud Pollien (researcher) Cédric Fluckiger (assistant)Visiting lecturersLorenzo Bianda Marco Maria Gazzano Guest artists Lorenzo Bianda Robert Cahen Francesco Mariotti Francisco MeirinoPartnersClaudio Berger, Centro culturale e museo Elisarion, Minusio Elio Schenini, MASI – Museo d arte della Svizzera italiana, Lugano Nicole Schweizer, Musée cantonal des beaux-arts, Lausanne Samuel Gross, Istituto Svizzero, Rome Marco Maria Gazzano, Università Roma Tre, Rome Grégoire Quenault, Alain Carou, Labex project, Université Paris 8 and the French National Library, Emergence of video art in EuropePeriodOctober 2017 – September 2020Supported byECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne SNSF – Swiss National Science Foundation Centro culturale e museo Elisarion, MinusioDisseminationPublication Francois Bovier and Adeena Mey (eds.), VideoArt Festival Locarno: a Prospective, Lausanne: ECAL / Minusio: Centro culturale e museo Elisarion, 2019. Blackout Project
Blackout

Loïc Dupasquier – Blackout Blackest Ever Black, a British record label, announced it was shutting down in 2019. This project pays tribute to the label through a post-mortem cassette reissue of its ten most outstanding musical releases. These feature two levels of information, a listing of how the tracks make the listeners feel and the barely visible metadata of the releases. The font used is my revival of a typographic drawing by Peter Behrens, which, just like the label did, enables me to take things from the past and make them contemporary.

ECAL at Sculpture Garden, Geneva – Le cours de l'eau Event
ECAL at Sculpture Garden, Geneva – Le cours de l'eau

ECAL at Sculpture Garden, Geneva – Le cours de l eau,18.06–30.09.2020,Parc des Eaux-Vives, Geneva On the occasion of the Geneva Biennial: Sculpture Garden organized by artgenève and the MAMCO (curator of the exhibition: Balthazar Lovay) until 30 September 2020, students in 2nd year Bachelor Industrial Design from ECAL present a Bisse project in the Parc des Eaux-Vives. No doubt you have already walked, or dreamt of walking, along a Bisse in Canton Valais. A Bisse is a historical irrigation channel, many of which run through the idyllic Alpine landscape. Perhaps it was this romantic notion that inspired the National Exhibition of 1896 to recreate and display a “Mazot”, a typical wooden Alpine hut, albeit conveying a rather stereotypical idea of Switzerland. This larch wood hut, which could be considered as a forerunner of the circular economy, has been given a new lease of life for passersby to admire in the Eaux-Vives park. Is it a decorative object? Is it nostalgic? Or maybe folklore? The 2nd year Bachelor Indus-trial Design students at ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne, under the supervision of programme director Stéphane Halmaï-Voisard and their professor Adrien Rovero, have chosen to recreate the architecture of a traditional Bisse. This construction is also made of larch wood and includes several surprising features, starting with a viewing platform, a map of Lake Geneva, a water mirror and a simple bench to sit and contemplate a basic element: the flow of water. This project brings us closer to nature and makes sense in today s world where traditional values and local sourcing are being revived.

ECAL x RBM by Flokk: The Future of School Seating Innovative architecture, technology and design are shaping the future of education, challenging the norms for those creating learning spaces more than ever before. Danish furniture manufacturers RBM by Flokk have embarked on a semester-long design project with students from ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne (Switzerland). “What a great challenge for the students to collaborate with an important brand in order to create future experiences based on their experiences from the past! Back to school and to the future!” says Alexis Georgacopoulos, Director of ECAL. Based around the title, The Future of School Seating, the 1st year Master Product Design students worked with course leader and designer Camille Blin, assisted by Margo Clavier, to explore alternatives to today s traditional school chair, specifically for children aged 6–12. “We tasked the students at ECAL to reimagine traditional school chairs and to design a product that fits seamlessly into the operating culture of future learning environments. We know that ways of teaching and learning are more diverse than ever before and we are excited to show off some great concepts from the ECAL 1st year Master Product Design students – the next generation of super talented designers,” explains .ystein Austad, Design Manager, RBM by Flokk. Located inside Konstnärshuset, a stunning and historical art gallery based in Central Stockholm,Education Reimagined invites visitors to experience an interactive exhibition of inspiring concepts presented by the students themselves. Visitors to Stockholm Design week can enjoy a fascinating glimpse into how young designers envision education spaces of the future.

Located inside Konstnärshuset, a stunning and historical art gallery based in Central Stockholm, Education Reimagined invites visitors to experience an interactive exhibition of inspiring concepts presented by the students themselves. Visitors to Stockholm Design week can enjoy a fascinating glimpse into how young designers envision education spaces of the future. ECAL at artgenève: INTERFERENCES Event
ECAL at artgenève: INTERFERENCES

ECAL at artgenève: INTERFERENCES,29.01–02.02.2020,Palexpo, Geneva INTERFERENCES – Forty-Four Excuses for Participation and a Zero Mario de Vega with BA Fine Arts and Media & Interaction Design students. INTERFERENCES – Forty-Four Excuses for Participation and a Zero Mario de Vega with BA Fine Arts and Media & Interaction Design students A collaborative project between Bachelor Fine Arts and Bachelor Media & Interaction Design students from ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne following a workshop led by sound artist Mario de Vega, visiting professor during the fall semester 2019 at ECAL and resident at La Becque | Artists Residency. Through a conceptual approach to sound, this exhibition proposes a scenario in which the eye takes the role of the ear, and vice versa. Within the notion of “Aural Vision”, the presented works result from a short seminar that served as an introduction to a larger educative experience which aims to extend collaborations between Media & Interaction Design and Fine Arts, using sound as a bridge. The project is based on the 45 definitions of the INTERFERENCES publication. It investigates the ongoing developments of timebased media, taking advantage of its benefits and advances, through a critical perspective. From 29 January to 2 February 2020, from 12pm to 8pm (except Thursday and Sunday 7pm) – Stand D11. artgenève Palexpo Route François-Peyrot 30 1218 Le Grand-Saconnex/Genève http://www.artgeneve.ch Image ECAL/Jimmy Rachez

"Making FASHION Sense" exhibition with ECAL graduates Event
"Making FASHION Sense" exhibition with ECAL graduates

"Making FASHION Sense" exhibition with ECAL graduates,16.01–08.03.2020,HEK, Basel On the occasion of the exhibition " Making FASHION Sense " at HeK - Haus der elektronischen Künste Basel until 8 March 2020, two ECAL alumni presents several projects. This exhibition showcases the radical transformation of fashion through technology. Robot arms and mixed reality, holograms and drones have all paraded down international catwalks. «Making FASHION Sense» focuses on the impact of technology upon creative processes in the fashion industry, as well as on artistic paths leading towards increasing sustainability: Fashion which makes sense. With "BASE" (2019), presented for his BA Media & Interaction Design diploma, the Swiss designer Alfatih introduces a concept of fashion for digital spaces, and thereby an alternative fashion economy. The project includes a collection of filters for Instagram/Snapchat, a series of garments that can be used for avatars in the game Grand Theft Auto, as well as an interactive installation/performance presenting the concept of the brand BASE. “Active Shoes” (2019) by ECAL BA Industrial Design graduate Christophe Guberan belongs to a series of “active textiles”, which uses technology to radically questiontraditional production processes. By printing on stretch fabrics of varying layer thicknesses, he develops self-assembling designs which reconfigure themselves in preprogrammed shapes. ECAL at the Youth Olympic Games – Lausanne 2020 Event
ECAL at the Youth Olympic Games – Lausanne 2020

ECAL at the Youth Olympic Games – Lausanne 2020,09–22.01.2020,Lausanne On the occasion of the Youth Olympic Games – Lausanne 2020 , ECAL particpates in several projects. On the occasion of the Youth Olympic Games – Lausanne 2020, ECAL particpates in several projects: --- Design of the cauldron, medal trays and podiums The cauldron, the medal trays and the podiums are three of the most symbolic elements of the Olympic Games. Second-year Industrial Design Bachelor s students from the ECAL were tasked with designing them. The students had to meet certain operational constraints and technical requirements: The cauldron must be able to be supplied with wood pellets, the result of a partnership between several organisations in the Vaud region, including the Lignum Vaud, which brings together all the regional players in the wood sector. This ecological innovation makes this cauldron the most eco-responsible in the history of the Olympic Games. It must also be removable and an integral part of the Games legacy. The podiums would have to be assembled outside at the last minute, often on uneven ground. They needed to be solid, light and large enough for several athletes. The medal trays had to be big enough to hold both medals and mascots. Cauldron Design: ECAL (Bachelor Industrial Design) Student: François Lafortune Production: C-FOR! + Ecole de la construction This cauldron project took inspiration from “freeskiing” culture, seeking to reflect it in both style and substance. Freeskiing is the world of skateparks and snowparks, with which many young people are very familiar. The installation comprises a mini jump and a ramp, with the cauldron placed at the top. The project s designer, François, envisaged that it would be an integral part of the Opening Ceremony and that the cauldron could be lit by a freerider. After Lausanne 2020, the installation is set to be converted into part of a permanent skatepark for the people of Lausanne. Podium Design: ECAL (Bachelor Industrial Design) Students: Louis Bétin + Theo Luvisotto + Estelle Rougerie Production: Ecole de la construction The podiums juxtapose the outlines of three mountain ranges where the competitions are being held: the Jura mountains, the Vaud Alps and the mountains of St Moritz. Plateaux des médailles Design and Production: (Bachelor Industrial Design) Student: Olivia Dall Omo The medal trays have coverings in the colours of the official hat worn by the volunteers. “The outfit is completed by a pair of mittens. So you ll be nice and warm, and all set to go cheer on your favourite athletes!” Mapping of the BodyCity Show Unique creation imagined for Lausanne en Jeux! - the animation program of the Youth Olympic Games Lausanne 2020 - BodyCity is a show where arts and urban sports meet in an impressive open-air setting, on the place Centrale of Lausanne. Five performances will take place in public on January 9, 11, 12, 18 and 19, 2020 at 6 p.m. "Bodies in fusion with the city", it is from this strong image that Nicolas Musin directed BodyCity, a contemporary show questioning the relationship of young generations to the city. On an open-air stage representing a city in constant mutation, more than 50 performers aged between 9 and 30 years will cross their disciplines from January 9, bringing together urban arts and sports suchas skateboarding, BMX, rollerblading, scooter, parkour and dance. Imagined within the framework of Lausanne en Jeux!, this show is above all a work of youth carried by art schools and urbandisciplines training centers established in the Lausanne conurbation. BodyCity was thus able to bring together different Lausanne actors such as the students of the ECAL (conception of video images) of the HEMU (composition of the original music and recording of the soundtrack), thedancers of the Ecole-Atelier Rudra Béjart (dance and percussion), JDS Events (hip hop, breakdance) aswell as the riders of La Fièvre and the tracers of X-Trem Move. A meeting between different cultures and disciplines that the director Nicolas Musin has managed to reunite in order to offer a unique and unprecedented show in Lausanne. The mapping of the show was thus created by the students of the Visual Communication Department (BA Graphic Design, BA Photography, BA Media & Interaction Design) under the direction of Vincent Jacquier, Angelo Benedetto, Jean-Vincent Simonet and Mitch Paone while editing was managed by Amaury Hamon and Clément Lambelet.

BRUTAL 003 Project
BRUTAL 003

BRUTAL 003 To celebrate the Paris Photo 2019 edition, the Bachelor Photography students of ECAL, under the artistic direction of Nicolas Poillot, translated the music of the producer IKAZ BOI into images. The visuals, sometimes smooth and neat, sometimes dark and rough, were produced by listening to the new project BRUTAL 3: an  intimate album oscillating between romance and darkness composed with instrumental tracks only. Exclusively, 500 unpublished and numbered vinyl copies were created especially for this occasion. For two days, ECAL invests the Au Roi gallery, inviting spectators to a sound and visual journey, in an ephemeral sensory space generated by a synchronous video installation.
