Hugo Le Corre – Relativ

GRAPHIC DESIGN

Hugo Le Corre – Relativ

Diploma project by Hugo Le Corre

Are legibility and expressiveness incompatible terms in typography? Anchored in a context of digitalisation of communication media, Relativ is a typeface that questions the notion of distance in reading. Associated with an AI algorithm, this variable font adapts itself through an axis covering two extremes: from continuous reading to monumental titling, from micro to macro-typographic. Thus, this system automatically favours legibility and expressiveness, taking into account the reader’s distance. In a context where screens tend to replace printed media, Relativ opens new perspectives between typography, adaptive technologies and digital communication.

Raphaël Carruzzo – Remote

GRAPHIC DESIGN

Raphaël Carruzzo – Remote

Diploma project by Raphaël Carruzzo

Remote is a variable typeface born from a desire to recreate the link between movement and letters. Inspired by the body and choreographic notation, this typeface was designed for digital media. It helps interact with graphic content thanks to movement. Faced with an animated body, Remote interacts and transforms the typographic forms by following variations of movement. Passing easily from text to abstract typography, this variable font helps link movement and typographic compositions, thanks to a multitude of possible instances.

Loris Wahler – Altered Pursuit

GRAPHIC DESIGN

Loris Wahler – Altered Pursuit

Diploma project by Loris Wahler

For my graduation project, I decided to focus on movement through a music video clip. The intention is to use the graphic skills acquired during my years at ECAL in order to enhance an emotion transposed into music. The theme of the clip is centred around the idea of a race that repeats itself in different universes. By playing with these elements, a narrative is woven between the protagonist and his surrounding environment. The character used in the clip is a “bootleg” of the famous Disney character, Mickey. The intention is to use a character known to all in a radically different universe in order to be able to accentuate the dystopian side of the music.

Iris Moine – Twist

MEDIA & INTERACTION DESIGN

Iris Moine – Twist

Diploma project with Alain Bellet, Christophe Guignard, Gaël Hugo, Laura Nieder, Pauline Saglio

Twist was thought out as part of the upcoming industrial design exhibition at mudac - Musée cantonal de design et d’arts appliqués contemporains. The aim of this project is to engage children’s curiosity about design, for whom the idea of visiting a museum is often not the most exciting. How can we encourage a stimulating visit and discovery of the exhibits? By bringing out an object from the exhibition, the Bold chair by Big-Game studio, this project transforms it into an interactive installation. Guided by a character on screen, children are invited to interact with certain parts of the chair: sitting, pinching, turning, etc. These interactions trigger games, and information is presented in a playful way, thus creating a direct and memorable relationship with the object and raising awareness of design.

During the Service Design course, the 3rd year of the Graphic Design, Photography and Media & Interaction Design bachelors had to create multi-media projects. A collaboration of the Visual Communication department which had as subject the SDGs (*Sustainable Development Goals). The theme was called "For a good cause, make the SDGs a reality" and its objective was to allow students to develop a cause that is close to their hearts. Each project consists of at least two different media, one primary and one secondary. These projects could take any form that the students deemed relevant, be it a website, editions, posters, a video sequence or virtual reality.

Body City

Body City

Transversal project with Angelo Benedetto, Vincent Jacquier, Mitch Paone (Dia Studio), Jean-Vincent Simonet

Mapping of the Body City show Unique creation imagined for Lausanne en Jeux ! - the animation program of the Youth Olympic Games Lausanne 2020 - Body City is a show where arts and urban sports meet in an impressive open-air setting, on the central square of Lausanne. "Bodies in fusion with the city", it is from this strong image that Nicolas Musin conceived and realized Body City, a contemporary show questioning the relationship of the young generations to the city. On an open-air stage representing a city in constant mutation, more than 50 performers aged between 9 and 30 will cross their disciplines, bringing together arts and urban sports such as skateboarding, BMX, rollerblading, scooter, parkour and dance. A poetic and spectacular journey in the heart of Lausanne, where video, sound and light are mixed together! Imagined within the framework of Lausanne en Jeux, this show is above all a work of youth supported by art schools and training centers for urban disciplines established in the agglomeration of Lausanne. Thus, Body City has brought together different actors from Lausanne such as students from ECAL (video design), HEMU (composition of the original music and recording of the soundtrack), dancers from the Ecole-Atelier Rudra Béjart (dance and percussion), JDSEvents (hip hop, breakdance) as well as the riders from La Fièvre and the plotters from X-Trem Move. The mapping of the show was created by the students of the Visual Communication Department (BA Graphic Design, BA Photography, BA Media & Interaction Design) under the direction of Vincent Jacquier, Angelo Benedetto, Jean-Vincent Simonet and Mitch Paone while the editing was done by Amaury Hamon and Clément Lambelet.

Ring My Bell

INDUSTRIAL DESIGN

Ring My Bell

Studio project with Cédric Duchêne, Stéphane Halmaï-Voisard, Mathieu Rivier

DONG! TRRRRRR! Or maybe even GLING! Or BLING!, MHHHH! And sometimes even BRAOUM! ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne presents an offbeat collection of interactive doorbells developed by first-year Bachelor Industrial Design students, under the joint guidance of Stéphane Halmaï-Voisard, Head of Bachelor Industrial Design, and Mathieu Rivier, a Bachelor Media & Interaction Design graduate. Sound and object design are two notions that industrial designers rarely have the opportunity to associate. However, most common objects potentially produce sounds. All you have to do is pull a chair, open and close a drawer or press a switch to generate sound. Common factors: movement, friction and interaction, which allow basic physics processes to create tones. In this perspective, the students offered a fresh and original look at an ordinary object, often invisible, but never discreet: the doorbell. Whether mechanical or electrical, the bells they have invented reveal a unique, sometimes even thundering, sound experience. Here, the classic carillon gives way to a curious metallophone powered by a perforated card reminiscent of traditional mechanical music boxes. The old door knocker is exchanged for a vibrating dong! The familiar buzzer is replaced by an efficient drum roll. The usual bell replaces a strange device that makes a great sound. Finally, the usual ding-dong is swapped for a resounding mhhhhh ! dear to the bovine race, to name but a few of the devices presented. Come in and ring the bell! www.ecal-ringmybell.ch
