Adrien Missika, Prix fondation Ricard 2011 Le 13e Prix Fondation d entreprise Ricard a été remis samedi 22 octobre 2011 à Adrien Missika, diplômé de l Unité de photographie de l ECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne en 2007 Le prestigieux Prix Fondation d entreprise Ricard récompense chaque année, depuis 1999, un·e artiste émergent·e de la jeune scène artistique française, présenté dans le cadre d une exposition confiée à un commissaire indépendant (Eric Troncy pour cette édition). Le Prix, décerné par un jury de critiques d art et de collectionneurs (amis du Centre Pompidou, du Palais de Tokyo, du Jeu de Paume..), consiste en l achat d une oeuvre au lauréat, laquelle est offerte et exposée au Centre Pompidou, dans les collections du Musée national d art moderne. Adrien Missika était en lice avec des designers, photographes et artistes de réputation mondiale: Erwan et Ronan Bouroullec (intervenants à l ECAL), Gaétan Brunet et Antoine Espinasseau, Erwan Frotin (également diplômé de l ECAL), Corentin Grossmann, Loïc Raguénès (intervenant à l ECAL). Du 13 septembre au 29 octobre 2011, une exposition du célèbre curateur Eric Troncy présente ces oeuvres à la Fondation d entreprise Ricard à Paris. Biographie d Adrien Missika Né en 1981 à Paris, vit et travaille à Berlin. “Si nous devions résumer l œuvre d Adrien Missika, il pourrait s apparenter à la définition polysémique du mot "fabrique". Ce dernier désigne entre autres une production industrielle ou une architecture pittoresque et artificielle des jardins romantiques comme un édifice apparemment à l état d abandon. Opération qui peut s apparenter au film d anticipation. D une fabrique à l autre, Adrien Missika explore l efficacité des images mécaniques (photographie et vidéo) et reprend à son compte «la ruine par anticipation» appliquée cette fois à l imagerie moderne allant du cinéma à la photo de presse» Julien Fronsacq. Diplômé de l ECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne en 2007, Adrien Missika est aussi le co-fondateur en 2006 de l espace d art 1m3 à Lausanne. ECAL/Baccarat,06.10–02.11.2011,Lausanne Palace L ECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne présente à l occasion du lancement de la Boutique du Lausanne Palace & SPA des projets réalisés pour Baccarat dans le cadre du Master en Design et industrie du luxe (MAS-Luxe) suite à un workshop dirigé par les designers Ed Barber et Jay Osgerby. L ECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne est heureuse de présenter des projets réalisés par la troisième volée du Master en Design et industrie du luxe, lancé à l automne 2008. Le MAS-Luxe est un programme de 10 mois organisé au sein de l ECAL. Cette formation offre aux étudiants venus du monde entier la possibilité de collaborer avec des entreprises comme Audemars Piguet, Hublot, Nespresso, Bernardaud, TAG Aviation, Reuge ou encore Christofle. Pour Baccarat, les étudiants ont travaillé sous la direction des deux designers londoniens Ed Barber et Jay Osgerby pour donner de nouvelles interprétations du fameux verre Harcourt, icône de la marque, qui fête ses 170 ans en 2011. Ce verre, dont le dessin reste inchangé depuis sa créa tion, est devenu un classique dans le monde diplomatique, de la table de Napoléon III à celle de Jean-Paul II. Les nouvelles propositions, de l iconoclasme du verre étiré Harcourt au détournement des verres en pièces de jeu d échec, démontrent à la fois l engouement des étudiants pour le cristal et rappellent que le style Harcourt est intemporel. A cette occasion, seront également à découvrir une nouvelle collection signée par le designer espagnol Jaime Hayon et deux lustres dessinés par Philippe Starck.
L ECAL rafle tous les prix à Locarno Pour la troisième fois en quatre ans, le Département cinéma de l ECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne, dirigé par le cinéaste Lionel Baier, remporte le Pardino d oro du meilleur court métrage suisse à l occasion du Festival du film de Locarno. Lors de cette édition, l ECAL a aussi engrangé tous les autres prix des sections de courts métrages helvétiques. Une première pour une école dans l histoire de cette manifestation! Ainsi, Jan Czarlewski, étudiant de 2e année, a gagné le Pardino d oro, mais également le prix Prix du jury Cinema e Gioventù. Le Pardino d argento est revenu à Carmen Jaquier, diplômée en juin 2011. Quant à Jean Guillaume Sonnier, diplômé en juin 2011, il reçoit le Prix Action Light pour le meilleur espoir suisse. Ces films seront projetés cet automne à la Cinémathèque suisse à Lausanne. Outre cette moisson de récompenses, plusieurs ancien·e·s étudiant·e·s ont obtenu diverses bourses. A noter que le Département cinéma de l ECAL sera présent en sélection officielle à la 68e Mostra de Venise (fin août) par le biais du film «Amore Carne» de Pippo Delbono, co-produit par la Cinémathèque suisse et Casa Azul à Lausanne. His dedication came with a price; he never really had time for me, his son. In admiration, I always longed to be like him. However, I feel like I am quite the opposite. I thus, decide to come to Brussels to try to make up for lost time. Commentaire A son, a father. The first holds a camera, the other is an ambassador. A great game of evasions where the son, by dint of (voluntarily) getting his feet wet, manages to draw a portrait of his father (and his own, as a result...). Sensitive and uncompromising, in the little game of who loses wins, the sprinkler ends up (fortunately!) being sprinkled... Having seen that flats are more easily rented to couples than singles, Benoît comes up with the plan to have Jeanne, his neighbour, act as his girlfriend. Through this role play, Benoît will fall under the charm of this young lady who is keen on horse betting, and will let himself be led into an amorous bet that will ruin him. Comments Another Game is a modest and playful film, an elegant cross between a young skater with a broken leg and a mysterious young woman who bets on the racetrack. With its contrasting black and white and lively dialogue, the film pays homage to the lightness of 1960s cinema and brilliantly affirms its belief in romance. Collaboration with Baccarat – 2011 For this first collaboration with Baccarat, the students worked under the direction of the two London designers Ed Barber and Jay Osgerby to give new interpretations of the famous Harcourt glass, an icon of the brand, which celebrates its 170th anniversary in 2011. This glass, whose design has remained unchanged since its creation, has become a classic in the diplomatic world, from the table of Napoleon III to that of John Paul II. Noha Mokhtar – Al Fassad / The Corruption “At first, I made the video El hob wal melh / Love and salt on the basis of two simple observations: the television has often a pivotal role in an Arabic living room and the living room itself is the most important room in the house as this is the room where you receive guests and present yourself. Therefore this room is meticulously decorated with particular attention paid to its details. The room is thus comparable to a stage set. In this work, I tried to bring both the virtual (an Egyptian historic-political soap opera) and physical space on the same sphere thanks to a combination of the sound and the image. I played with this existing ambiguous relation between fiction and documentary. This work was completed only a couple of weeks before the start of the Egyptian uprising in January 2011... A scene from an Egyptian soap opera plays on the screen; Karama warns Amira of the ongoing confiscation of the royal family s wealth including that of their close relation. Amira is part of this circle. The scene takes place in a fastidiously decorated living room, that looks singularly similar to the real living room, revealed by a panoramic. The sound coming from the television glides into this real room. As the first part of my project is more on the presentation of an internal point of view, I then decided to photograph the facades of buildings under construction or those that were in ruins in Cairo, as well as the “new palaces” surrounding them for my Al fassad/ The corruption edition. The aim of this was to confront these buidings to the stage sets of the “Media City Production”, a big film studio that produces numerous films and television series in Egypt. Once again, this work was not limited to documentary work as I added pieces of printed textile transformed into patterns, boxes of Kleenex made up like sculptures or plastic mouldings to the architectural shots. In Arabic, “Al Fassad“ also means “Corruption“.“
ECAL/Christofle,16–20.06.2011,Christofle, Paris L ECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne présente une série d objets réalisés pour la maison Christofle. L occasion de découvrir (9 rue Royale à Paris) des projets imaginés lors d un workshop avec Xavier Perrenoud par les étudiants du programme de Master en design et industrie du luxe. Christofle est partenaire depuis 2009 du MAS-Luxe (Master en Design et Industrie du Luxe) initié par Pierre Keller, directeur de l ECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne (de 1995 à 2011), et dirigé par Augustin Scott de Martinville. Ensemble, ils creusent le sillon fructueux de ce défi créatif relevé chaque fois avec brio par de jeunes étudiants venus du monde entier. Pour le workshop 2011, placé sous la direction du designer Xavier Perrenoud, Christofle a demandé aux étudiants de réfléchir à un sujet qui lui est cher: le cadeau de naissance, et de manière plus générale, le monde de l enfance. On connaît Christofle pour ses timbales, coquetiers, ronds de serviette et couverts pour bébé en argent. De beaux objets chargés de sentiments, symboles de transmission culturelle et familiale, qui accompagnent ceux qui les reçoivent tout au long de leur chemin de vie. Traditionnels voire quasi-institutionnels, de quelle manière ces objets peuvent-ils être réinventés? Comment conserver les qualités intemporelles de la matière argent tout en amenant plus de légèreté, de poésie et d humour dans la création? C est avec une grande sensibilité que les étudiants du Master en Design et Industrie du Luxe de l ECAL ont posé un regard décalé, ludique et rempli de tendresse sur ce brief exigeant. Le résultat: 13 créations inattendues, toutes pétries d une nostalgie délicieusement retro mais dont l inventivité et l univers créatif unique rappellent qu elles s inscrivent bien dans leur temps. Fruits d un travail de création et d élaboration long de plusieurs mois, ces objets sont présentés en exclusivité dans le cadre des Designer s Days à Paris, et pour certains d entre eux édités au sein des collections Christofle.
Marius Aeberli – Elapse « En accord avec la vision subjective de l utilisateur, ELAPSE offre une extension visuelle aussi subjective et adaptée à chaque représentation personnelle du temps. L informatique et le traitement de l information ont toujours eu la prétention d être précis et exhaustifs avec une tendance à privilégier la standardisation. Jusqu à présent, cette logique absolue a comblé la subjectivité et les imperfections cognitives des utilisateurs. Aujourd hui, un seul utilisateur interagit avec l univers numérique des dizaines de milliers de fois par jour et, dans son évolution, ce même univers tend à s inspirer de nos propres comportements. Néanmoins, les interfaces restent à l image de leurs hôtes : froides, précises et standardisées ou inspirées des codes graphiques obsolètes auxquels elles sont habituées. Intitulé ELAPSE, mon projet propose une approche graphique différente du design d interface. A travers un principe de calendrier/calendrier, symbole de l informatique appliquée, l interface graphique peut être entièrement modélisée par l utilisateur en fonction de sa conception du temps. Cette approche cognitive permet aux utilisateurs de laisser le superflu et de contourner le pouvoir de la précision. Ainsi, les semaines et les jours peuvent être déroulés dans des directions différentes et les jours de la semaine ainsi que les heures peuvent avoir une durée visuelle différente. Dans la même pers- pective, certains jours peuvent être préférés à d autres et certains rendez-vous peuvent être indiqués comme plus agréables que d autres. ELAPSE recommande également le moment le plus approprié pour un rendez-vous particulier et permet à l utilisateur de créer une liste de choses à faire en fonction du lieu où il se trouve et, par conséquent, d éviter un surmenage inutile. Naturellement, cette application ne s adresse pas nécessairement aux utilisateurs désireux d être organisés de manière forte et précise, mais plutôt à ceux qui doivent faire un effort lorsqu ils utilisent un calendrier, malgré l expérience des années et du temps. » Marius Aeberli
Collaboration with Bernardaud – 2011 For the first collaboration with Bernardaud, the students worked under the direction of French designer Pierre Charpin to develop new designs to be applied to the porcelain produced at the Limoges factory. The students used the term "white" - which refers to porcelain pieces before they are decorated - as the basic material for their designs. The astonishing proposals, as well as the students enthusiasm, prove how current the notion of decoration is. Among the eight selected projects - produced in limited series - the "France" project was inspired by the Michelin Guide, born in 1900, to encourage customers to travel by car to discover culinary destinations and thus wear out their tyres. Roads and gastronomy become inseparable. The collection is for six people, and by juxtaposing the 30 different plates, the user discovers a single map of the roads and starred restaurants of France. In order to pay tribute to the conquest of space and the unknown, the "Space Capsules" vases are inspired by the technical and scientific world of rockets or satellites. The "Inertia" project is based on an aesthetic resulting from movement. Applied using the turning technique, the pattern is painted directly onto the rotating parts. The impression of dynamism and speed is illustrated by the frequency of the lines and by their discontinuity. This series has been entirely handmade in order to create unique pieces.
Types We Can Make,28.04–14.05.2011,Gallery l elac, ECAL L ECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne présente «Types We Can Make» à l elac (l espace lausannois d art contemporain. Initiée par le Consulat de Suisse/swissnex Boston, le MIT Museum/Massachussetts Institute of Technology et l ECAL, cette exposition a déjà été présentée en 2010 à la Compton Gallery du MIT Museum et en 2011 à l Institut suisse de Rome à Milan. Cet événement, qui offre une sélection de typographies contemporaines helvétiques, est accompagné d un livre de 150 pages publié par l ECAL. Par le biais de cette exposition, l ECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne est fière de confronter la tradition suisse à une approche irrévérencieuse plus contemporaine. Les deux d ailleurs s inscrivent parfaitement dans la ligne de ce qui a été fait à l ECAL depuis l arrivée en 1995 de Pierre Keller en tant que directeur. Notamment grâce à l Unité de design graphique dirigée jusqu en 2009 par François Rappo (présent dans l exposition avec diverses fontes) et aujourd hui responsable avec Pierre Fantys du Master in Art Direction lancé à l automne dernier. Cette exposition reflète totalement la politique instaurée dans cette école. On y trouve ainsi tout ce qui a permis d hisser cette institution dans le club très select des dix meilleures écoles d art et de design du monde. A commencer par la présence d intervenants et professeurs de renommée internationale tels que Ludovic Balland, Cornel Windlin, Jonas Voegeli, NORM (Dimitri Bruni et Manuel Krebs). Des personnalités qui ont su dispenser leur savoir-faire tant en matière de Corporate Identity (fonte, logo, affiche…) que de design de caractères. L apprentissage de la courbe qui va droit au but! On y trouve également les travaux d un grand nombre d anciens étudiants qui ont pu expérimenter par eux-mêmes ou avec le concours de l ECAL les différents champs de l art typographique et les nombreuses applications qui en découlent. Qu il s agisse de la création pure de fontes comme celles d Aurèle Sack, Nicolas Eigenheer, Philippe Desarzens, Mathieu Cortat, Emmanuel Rey, Jeremy Schorderet ou Ian Party. Du lancement d un magazine tel que Sang Bleu par Maxime Büchi dont les qualités sont louées aux quatre coins du globe. D un travail de recherche par David Keshavjee et Julien Tavelli mis en application dans l ouvrage Typeface as program édité par JRP/Ringier et l ECAL. De monographies d artistes, de revues et magazines, voire même de logos comme celui réalisé pour RocNation du célèbre rappeur américain Jay-Z, par Gilles Gavillet et David Rust. De projets de scripting qui confinent au design interactif comme ceux initiés par Jürg Lehni et Alex Rich. De travaux de direction artistique par FAGETA composé d Adeline Mollard et Philippe Egger pour Gestalten Verlag, d Annina Mettler pour Das Magazin ou encore de Marie Lusa pour Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst à Zurich. Sans oublier des affiches illustrées par Körner Union (formé de Guy Meldem, Tarik Hayward, Sami Benhadj) et Tatiana Rihs. La scénographie réalisée par Alexis Georgacopoulos, responsable du Master en design de produit, met en lumière les typographies grâce à des affiches au format mondial (F4) qui est utilisé dans les rues en Suisse. Elles sont directement imprimées sur du carton «nid d abeilles», un matériau rigide, léger et respectueux de l environnement. Cette sélection opérée par François Rappo, Alexis Georgacopoulos et Pierre Keller, témoigne de la large palette graphique (!) et typographique que possèdent les anciens écaliens. Grâce à cette génération dorée, l excellence helvétique en la matière a encore de beaux jours devant elle et nul doute que la typographie suisse continuera à s écrire longtemps en lettres capitales!

Cinema 3D Generally perceived as a simple way to immerse the spectator, 3D cinema is also often regarded just as a marketing argument. Consequently, studies on the implications of stereoscopy on cinematographic language are still very rare. Thus, the main goal of the project is to understand how 3D can be used in a film as an instrument for narration. Consequently, the general objective of the project is to study the influence of 3D on : the impact of images on the spectator the framing, cutting, montage and post-production of a film the creation of special effects. To this end, several particular objectives were defined : Enriching the state of the art related to 3D cinema in through readings, interviews, film analysis and meetings with experts. Making a synthesis and making accessible the theoretical basis necessary to the comprehension of 3D images. Documentary / 11min Synopsis Through the rediscovery of archival images long kept at my grandparents home in Bordeaux, I tell the story of my childhood in Mandima, a small village in northeastern Zaire where I was born. Starting with a panoramic photo of the big departure, I observe and think back, photo after photo, to those first 10 years of this little boy who must, one fine day, leave for the city, for high school. Documentary Synopsis The 6th of April 2009, at 3.32 am, the earth trembled in Italy and caused the destruction of the town of Aquila and of 200 villages in the surroundings. Today the survivors live in aseismic buildings which are situated on the hills, far from the rubble. Collaboration with Hublot Under the direction of Augustin Scott de Martinville, watch brand Hublot asked students from the Masters of Advanced Studies in Design for Luxury and Craftsmanship to design a series of kitchen knives. Amongst the different propositions the project of canadian student Philippe-Albert Lefebvre combines ergonomics with the hard edges and geometrical shapes Hublot is well known for. The shape derives from the way professional chefs hold their knives. In that sense, the sides of the handles are ribbed at the exact place the thumb and the index should pinch the blade. The blade perfectly balances with the weight of the hollowed out handle. Each knife features a large handle core, a unique asset reminding of the classic layered construction of the Hublot watches. While for Jacques-Elie Ribeyron, another canadian student, the project consisted of a sleeve made from cow hide containing a large « All black » chopping knife and a fork stamped with the logo of the brand.
Collaboration with Reuge – 2010 Founded in 1865, Reuge has an incomparable experience and history in the field of music boxes. As a result of the workshop held under the direction of the famous Brazilian designers Humberto and Fernando Campana with the students of the Master of Advanced Studies in Design for Luxury and Craftsmanship, a series of projects were produced by the Swiss brand. Called "Slightly Windy", José Ferrufino s music box is made of a peachwood sounding board and wheat ears covered in gold to stiffen them. When the wind blows, you can hear Bruce Springsteen s "Song of a Preacher Man". For her project "Landscape", Audrey Temin was directly inspired by the aesthetics of relaxing Japanese gardens that could be placed on a desk or table.
Lisa Roehrich – Limbo “ Limbo is a project realised in Lebanon during May 2010. It s composeb by 14 portraits filmed like Andy Warhol s «screentest». The portrait s characters are young lebaneses, all coming from different social environments. I met them walking around the country. My process consisted, while making pictures, in making them feel enough comfortable in ordrer they can decide of the way they wanted to represent them selves. Those 14 young people share the fact that they lived the 2006 war, without having the same feeling about the conflicts. Their religion or non-religion implicates a huge diversity of opinions. “
Laurent Mercier: Les escarpins de Lola,27.05–11.06.2010,Gallery l elac, ECAL L espace lausannois d art contemporain (l elac) accueille «Les escarpins de Lola», une exposition de Laurent Mercier, créature et créateur de mode. A cette occasion, il présente en exclusivité une partie de sa collection de chaussures à talons hauts. «Les escarpins de Lola» «Je suis un passionné de chaussures à talons hauts depuis aussi loin que je m en souvienne. C est un fétichisme assez commun, sans doute lié à un désir d élévation. Dans mon imaginaire, une silhouette part toujours de la chaussure. Ma référence absolue serait un escarpin à talon aiguille très fin et pointu des années 60, à la cambrure vertigineuse et suivant une courbe très précise. Le talon serait très haut, tourné vers l intérieur et la talonnette en métal. J adore le bruit du talon en métal. J ai trouvé récemment une série de chaussures d une collection Dolce & Gabbana très proche de mon fétichisme ultime. Le bout est juste un peu trop long pour être à la perfection. Mon fétichisme est assez monomaniaque. Je poursuis donc la recherche de la chaussure parfaite. Je suis, ceci dit, séduit par plein d autres chaussures et lorsqu une chaussure me plaît, je dois l avoir, quels que soient la marque et le prix. Je la traque et la chasse partout dans le monde, ce sont d ailleurs les seuls souvenirs de voyages que je ramène. Après avoir communiqué mon amour de la chaussure à Pierre Keller, il m a proposé de mettre en scène ma collection à l elac, accompagnée à l occasion du vernissage de mon alter ego féminin Lola, qui a la chance, la joie et le privilège de porter ces chaussures.» Biographie Laurent Mercier quitte la Suisse après un apprentissage de couturier chez Di Marino à Lausanne, une formation technique à l EPSIC en poche. Il poursuit par une formation de créateur de mode au Studio Berçot à Paris, puis Jean-Paul Gaultier l engage en qualité d assistant au studio de création. Laurent Mercier quitte Gaultier pour être engagé par le groupe ESCADA afin d assister Natalie Acatrini sur sa propre ligne et pour Crisca et Laurel. Il rencontre Lenny Kravitz qui lui propose de dessiner ses costumes de scène et de l accompagner en tournée. Après plusieurs tours du monde en compagnie du chanteur, il crée sa propre marque et défile à Paris. Quelques années plus tard, Balmain l engage en qualité de directeur artistique du prêt-à-porter d abord, puis après le départ d Oscar de la Renta, pour la haute couture également. Laurent Mercier quitte ensuite Balmain pour se concentrer sur sa propre ligne de haute couture. Il habille une clientèle particulière, mais crée également et confectionne des costumes de scène, de films, ou encore de spectacles pour des artistes internationaux. Il rencontre une princesse d Arabie Saoudite avec laquelle ils montent la marque de prêt-à-porter haut de gamme Ghadah Paris, dont il est directeur de création. Parallèlement, Thierry Mugler l engage comme "Creative Advisor" pour la création des costumes de Beyonce. Il collabore aussi pour différents projets avec Thierry Mugler (publicités pour parfums, costumes...).

Pierre Keller: Travaux de 1965 à 2010,25.02–23.04.2010,Gallery l elac, ECAL L espace lausannois d art contemporain (l elac) accueille une exposition de Pierre Keller. A cette occasion, le directeur de l ECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne (de 1995 à 2011) présente des créations réalisées entre 1965 et 2010. L occasion de (re)découvrir un parcours artistique pléthorique et atypique parfois méconnu du grand public. «On n est jamais aussi bien servi que par soi-même», se félicite Pierre Keller. A 65 ans, après avoir propulsé son institution vers les sommets, le directeur de l ECAL (de 1995 à 2010) démontre avec cette exposition qu il connaît bien le métier et que cette volonté de former et d engager des praticiens n est pas le fruit du hasard. Cette exposition donne l occasion de (re)découvrir ses travaux en tant que graphiste (salués par de nombreux prix entre 1963 et 1971), des peintures et sculptures réalisées entre 1970 et 1972, le fameux Kilo-Art produit en 1971, une série datant de 1975 à 1983 de 235 polaroïds au format 1/1 et 26 autres polaroïds agrandis, ainsi que des vidéos retraçant son parcours. Biographie Pierre Keller Pierre Keller est né à Gilly, sur la Côte vaudoise, le 9 janvier 1945. Il obtient en 1965 son diplôme de graphiste à l Ecole cantonale des beaux-arts et d arts appliqués de Lausanne. C est le départ d une brillante carrière d artiste – il représente la Suisse dans de nombreuses manifestations, notamment à la Biennale de l affiche de Varsovie, à la 9e Biennale des jeunes de Paris et à la 17e Biennale internationale de São Paulo 1983 – d éditeur, d enseignant et d organisateur. De 1988 à 1991, il est Délégué du Gouvernement Vaudois au 700e et prend en 1995 la direction de l ECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne, qu il conduit en quelques années dans le top cinq des écoles d art européennes. Passionné de musique (il a été trompette dans la fanfare militaire), il siège au Conseil de Fondation du Montreux Jazz Festival et se console d être resté simple soldat avec un grade d Officier des Arts et des Lettres de la République française. Pierre Keller est également professeur titulaire à l Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL). En 2006, il a reçu le Prix du Rayonnement décerné par la Fondation vaudoise pour la culture (FVPC). En 2007, Pierre Keller a été nommé Docteur Honoris Causa de la European University de Barcelone et distingué par le prestigieux Merit Design Preis Schweiz. Cette même année, il a participé activement à la mise en place des nouveaux locaux de l ECAL à Renens dans un bâtiment réhabilité par l architecte suisse Bernard Tschumi. En 2009, il a obtenu le Prix de Lausanne pour avoir largement contribué au rayonnement de cette ville dans le monde.
Walking the Edit Developed in the framework of the Master cinema of the HES-SO, the project Walking the Edit seeks to combine the field of cinema and the territory of new technologies in order to try out the potentialities of narrative constructions between, on the one hand, an audio-visual geolocalized data base and, on the other hand, the recorded trajectory of a person passing through an urban space. Concretely, the device implemented during this research is as follows: Film making and indexing of the media A production team surveys a delimited territory and gather audiovisual fragments which reveal the specific characteristics of the space : details, portraits, meetings. Emphasis is placed on the uniqueness of the viewpoint and the intensity of the regard of the authors which document the reality. The collected images and sounds are then indexed and are assigned a geographical location on a digital map by the team of editors. Each audiovisual fragment constitutes a medium which is indexed according to objective and subjective attributes. Then, these attributes permit selection of the media according to the analysis of the visitor s trajectory. Realization of films by the visitors Equipped with an iPhone and the software created as part of the project, visitors wander through the urban space. They hear the soundtrack of the film they are walking and watch the editing process taking place on the screen of the IPhone. Their trajectory "awaken" the images and create links between them. Diffusion and exchanges Once the walk is completed, visitors become viewers. They can watch "their trajectories translated into films" on the project s internet website and they can publish them if they wish to do so. Each film thus generated makes it possible to (re)immerse oneself into the "digital memory" of the urban space. The process contributes to the construction of a collective memory of the city, made up of the various recorded walks: between the media documenting the territory and the imaginary of the walker, a living memory is consolidated; between the material city and the imaginary city, a third cinematographic city appears. Cette exposition a été réalisée en collaboration avec la Fondation suisse pour la photographie (Fotostiftung Schweiz) à Winterthur. Je n ai jamais dit que je détestais un lieu, même pas quand je suis allé au Luxembourg photographier une centrale nucléaire. J y découvre toujours un motif intéressant, quelque chose d irréel peut-être. (JT) Texte de Martin Gasser (Conservateur) pour l exposition «Local Studies» au Fotostiftung Schweiz de Winterthur du 28.2. au 17.5.2009 Né en 1977 au Cameroun, Joël Tettamanti a grandi au Lesotho et en Suisse. Photographe de voyage moderne, il arpente, comme de nombreux photographes avant lui, des contrées connues et inconnues dans toutes les régions du globe, mais sans se documenter au préalable et sans jamais consulter de guides de voyage. Il lui suffit de savoir comment atteindre sa destination. Livré à lui-même, Tettamanti ne suit pas un programme photographique préétabli. Il travaille à l instinct, trouvant son inspiration au gré d errances et de rencontres fortuites qui lui inspirent des images à la fois poignantes et sereines. Évitant les paysages connus et les sujets ressassés, il cherche des images qui révèlent quelque chose de l identité d un lieu telle qu il la perçoit sur le vif. En Islande (« Where is my giant?», 2008), par exemple, le photographe se lance dans un véritable corps-à-corps avec une nature majestueuse, d une beauté sidérante, dont tout semble avoir été dit et montré, pour en saisir au final l essence peu spectaculaire mais néanmoins emblématique. De 1997 à 2001, Joël Tettamanti se forme en communication visuelle et photographie à l ECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne. Ses premiers projets traitent du paysage dans les montagnes suisses («Cols alpins», 2001) et les agglomérations du Plateau («Stadtland Schweiz», 2002). Par la suite, des commandes pour des revues comme Hochparterre, Das Magazin ou Wallpaper lui permettent de se rendre dans des pays lointains où, au terme d un long voyage en avion, il ne s arrête généralement que peu de temps. Tettamanti aime le décalage horaire, le sentiment de se réveiller à contretemps en un lieu où l on n est, intérieurement, pas encore vraiment arrivé. Tel un somnambule, il se retrouve invariablement dans des lieux inhabités et désolés qui ne dévoilent leur charme qu à la lumière incertaine entre chien et loup. Joël Tettamanti s intéresse aux lieux de passage, aux lieux-limites, comme les cols alpins et les frontières nationales («Ondarribi», France et Espagne, 2003), parce que ces endroits sont à la fois ouverture et clôture, en même temps sauvegarde d une identité connue et incitation à la découverte d inconnu. Grand saute-frontières entre les cultures, le photographe sillonne le globe, du Groenland au Mexique, de la Chine à l Espagne, dans des paysages où la présence humaine est à peine perceptible, des villes d où la nature est pratiquement bannie. Il pose son regard sur les constellations d objets avec lesquelles les gens « meublent » les lieux où ils vivent - échafaudages absurdes, abris provisoires, blocs d habitation, quartiers tentaculaires, ruines sans âge. Corps étrangers dans un environnement en apparence familier, à la frontière entre utilisation et délabrement, comme des « containers » oubliés ou laissés là par hasard, dont ni l observateur ni le photographe ne savent plus ce qu ils contiennent ni à quoi ils servent. Ils apparaissent souvent dans un vide atmosphérique qui confère à leurs structures et leurs formes une similitude superficielle, une parenté intérieure mystérieuse. Ils sont là et attendent, dit Tettamanti, jusqu à ce que leurs détails insignifiants, révélés par la qualité sensuelle de la lumière, commencent à parler de manière suggestive. Joël Tettamanti ne donne pas d explications. Non seulement il veut voir le monde autrement, mais encore il veut dévoiler un autre monde, irréel peut-être mais néanmoins familier - un monde en perpétuel changement. Décalage également au plan technique. Tettamanti photographie lentement et avec une précision méticuleuse. Comme les photographes du 19e siècle, il se sert d une caméra grand format avec trépied, et travaille avec des temps d exposition très longs et des négatifs couleurs 4x5 . Mais ensuite, par le truchement de leur numérisation en haute résolution, il catapulte ses images dans le 21e siècle ; converties en séries de données électroniques, elles entrent dans le catalogue virtuel de notre culture moderne. L exposition «Local Studies» est inspirée du livre éponyme de Joël Tettamanti, réalisé avec le soutien du Musée d Art Moderne du Luxembourg (MUDAM) et paru en 2006 chez Edition etc, Berlin. L exposition montre aussi une sélection de travaux de ces trois dernières années. Elle était produite en collaboration entre la Fondation suisse pour la photographie (Fotostiftung Schweiz) et Joël Tettamanti et represente la première présentation de grande envergure de son œuvre photographique en Suisse. Documentary Synopsis The show behind the show: Backstage Romeo and Juliet is an immersion in the backstage of a ballet at the Grand Theater of Geneva for the duration of a performance. A space where dancers, technicians and musicians evolve, where the extreme tension of the performance and the relaxed expectation, the physical excellence and the daily work are mixed. The interest is not to film the artistic process and the elaboration of a show, but rather the functioning of the "machinery" behind the stage, before, during and after the performance. To capture the gestures and actions of the actors, dancers and technicians, make-up artists, props makers, set designers, lighting directors... everything that is organized around the stage. The interest of the proposed exercise is to capture the interactions between people, the expectation, the tension, the signs of coordination.

Léonore Baud tries to catch them with her camera in a long tracking shot in a car; but as soon as the lovers feel observed, they stop snogging. Uncomfortable with this device, the director stops shooting. What she would like to do is to get out of the car and film the couples openly. A step that Egyptian moral rules make impossible however. They all told her that the gap between the Arab and Western world is deep, and that she had to accept that the ethical, moral and cultural rules that govern Egypt are different from her own. The filmmaker will therefore not make Lovers of the Nile, but will instead offer us a subtle reflection on the profession of filmmaker. Comment Making a documentary on lovers in Cairo: this is the project of a young Swiss student of cinema who quickly comes up against a term that is absolutely foreign to his work: censorship. Renens, espace urbain Dans le cadre du projet de semestre « Renens : espace urbain », les étudiant-e-s de la filière Master cinéma de la HES-SO ont été appelé-e-s à la réalité culturelle et sociale de la ville de Renens, dans laquelle se situe le bâtiment de l ECAL.
