PRAXIS – EXHIBITION OF THE CITY OF RENENS 2023 ENCOURAGEMENT PRIZE

PRAXIS – EXHIBITION OF THE CITY OF RENENS 2023 ENCOURAGEMENT PRIZE,23.11–10.12.2023,La Ferme des Tilleuls, Renens From November 23 to December 10, Ferme des Tilleuls hosts "Praxis", an exhibition by Till Seegräber and Gabriela Jaime, winners of the City of Renens 2023 Encouragement Prize. The City of Renens 2023 Encouragement Prize was awarded to two ECAL students, (Bachelor Industrial Design) and (Master Type Design). In the wake of this encounter, they have created "Praxis", an innovative collection of design objects that evoke simplicity. In an increasingly multi-faceted world that adapts to our individual needs, this exhibition invites us to reflect on the essence of objects. In so doing, it offers a counterpoint to the complexification that prevails in the field of design. By breaking down the elements of our environment, the designers have arrived at refined building blocks that can be used to design a wide range of objects. Gabriela Jaime and Till Seegräber present a series of abstract works exploring the ideas of prefabrication, grids and systems. ADDRESSLa Ferme des Tilleuls – Le Rural Rue de Lausanne 52 CH-1020 Renens WEBSITEfermedestilleuls.ch OPENINGTuesday, November 23, 2023 - 6pm

THEY – ECAL x LE CONSORTIUM Event
THEY – ECAL x LE CONSORTIUM

THEY – ECAL x LE CONSORTIUM,27.10.2023–31.03.2024,Dijon The Consortium Museum and ECAL present THEY, the culmination of the research project "The Raving Age. Histories and Figures of Youth" by the Master of Visual Arts. THEY, is not about us. It is the statement of a shortfall, a gap... Given this external perspective, how can we express the condition and creativity of a virtualized collective body? How can we get around the deadlocks of traditional differences, innocence, and primary inventiveness? The THEY exhibition seeks to create a diffracted image of youth – a community without community, thriving in a dissolved, uncertain world where referents move freely, unburdened by hierarchies, and transcending generational and gender constraints. The exhibition delves into the emergence of languages and forms, exploring how the foundations of a lexicon are established, and how a new way of making art, of being “contemporary” comes about. These contemporary perspectives presume acts of ownership, disappearance, ventriloquism, and the emergence of many social, interpersonal, political, and esthetic practices and experiments – always in action and opposing the inertia of walls. THEY thus establishes human maps, a sort of moral fable home to all kinds of affects and relationships of identification and indifference – forms of disappearance, a spectral base which leads us, in a certain way, into these worlds where virtuality reigns. It is a temporary refuge for “wild young people”: dissidents of systems and borders, creators of shapes, bodies, vehicles, and multiplicities, who want life, and not capital, to breed. THEY, is not about us. It is the statement of a shortfall, a gap. Given this external perspective, how can we express the condition and creativity of a virtualized collective body? How can we get around the deadlocks of traditional differences, innocence, and primary inventiveness? Can it be achieved by not doing sociology against a backdrop of existential and esthetic crisis? By freeing ourselves from a senile passion for whatever moves, lives, and rebels? How can we conceive of this transitional creature, unable to solidify in its unfinished forms, and instead very much ready to give in, so to speak, to its own unspecialized and powerful youth, turning away from any destiny and specific environment, and holding on to nothing else but its own immaturity and ignorance? The THEY exhibition is the final chapter of the research project titled “The Raving Age. Histoires et figures de la jeunesse”, directed by Vincent Normand, Philippe Azoury and Shirin Yousefi. This project is an integral part of ECAL s Master s degree in Visual Arts.1 Developed over a two-year period, the program is based on various cross-disciplinary activities including production, analysis and workshops, with many artists, thinkers, writers and students taking part in it. The platform at www.theravingage.com archives a list of all exchanges and conferences in that context. The exhibition mirrors a unique collaborative experience between a museum and an art school. Invited artists and students worked closely together during the various stages of the exhibition process, such as design and communication (Lorenzo Benzoni and Luca Frati), scenographic design with David Douard, a reality TV show directed by Sara Sadik, and even a performative piece by Gabriele Garavaglia. Some of the exhibited pieces were created specifically for this particular occasion, such as those by Julien Ceccaldi, Nicolas Ceccaldi, Mélanie Matranga, Gabriele Garavaglia, Exotourisme (Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster & Perez) and Jill Mulleady. Additional existing works were chosen for their specific resonance with the project. These include pieces by David Douard, Morag Keil, Caroline Poggi & Jonathan Vinel and David Wojnarowicz, a truly influential and dreaded figure of youth. Archive as a Creative Act: The Absolute Cinema of Gregory J. Markopoulos and the Temenos Utopia Project
Archive as a Creative Act: The Absolute Cinema of Gregory J. Markopoulos and the Temenos Utopia

Archive as a Creative Act: The Absolute Cinema of Gregory J. Markopoulos and the Temenos Utopia Artists who produce archives from their own work approach archival activity as a creative gesture: here, the archive literally becomes a work of art. In parallel with the “archival impulse” that has run through contemporary art since the 1960s, this research project examines the “performative agency” of archives when they are constituted from “image acts”. The selected corpus is based on an extremely singular case, the cinematographic work of Gregory J. Markopoulos (1928-1992) and the Temenos archives. Conceived in the 1970s and built up since the 1980s, this archive brings together the filmic, critical and theoretical productions of the Greek-American experimental filmmaker, as well as everything relating to the films of his companion Robert Beavers. Temenos is at once an archive, a festival dedicated to Gregory J. Markopoulos s last film cycle, Eniaios (1948-1990, approximately 80 hours), which has been held every four years since 2004, and a utopian project: "film as film", or a total work responding to a filmic absolute. This work-archive is explored through two main axes: an exhibition and a series of publications. At a time when the exhibition of moving images is becoming more widespread, the challenge is to look back at a series of films shot by one artist on film, and to present them in their concrete form in an exhibition space. Looped 16mm projections or linear projections following a fixed schedule will be confronted with enlargements of photograms and archival documents, all closely linked to films by Gregory J. Markopoulos that predate Eniaios but are included in this cycle. This cycle radicalises the notion of archive-creation: the earlier films are reedited, modified and accompanied by footage shot for the occasion, in a new project that erases the previous films. The richly illustrated exhibition catalogue will document the work, but will also include a series of theoretical contributions on the relationship between art and the archive, based on the case of the Temenos. In addition, two other works will be published: the correspondence between Gregory J. Markopoulos and Stan Brakhage, with a critical apparatus, which provides a close-up view of the processes of creation and self-organisation of American experimental cinema in the 1960s and 1970s; and a monograph on the cinema of Gregory J. Markopoulos, which to date remains little documented.Main applicantFrançois BovierResearch teamSerge Margel, senior researcher Lecturers and researchers: Philippe Artières, Erika Balsom, Robert Beavers, Christa Blümlinger, Enrico Camporesi, Markus Klammer, Rebekah Ruttkof, P. A Third Hand – Creative Applications for Robotics Project
A Third Hand – Creative Applications for Robotics

A Third Hand – Creative Applications for Robotics Robotic arms have long been a common sight in many industries. They are currently making a rapid entry into art and design studios and practices. Yet, at the same time, difficulties remain in accessing the workflows and work methods demanded by these machines given a clear lack of reference resources suited for this community. The same applies to Art and Design schools, which are increasingly investing in this type of equipment, often without having the resources to run it. This research project uses applied case studies to explore and define a set of exemplary work methods, capable of both informing and inspiring future users. In the field of automated manufacturing and industrial robots, the term used to highlight the concept of total automation is that of lights-out manufacturing, namely factories potentially capable of running with the lights off, without any on-site human presence required. This project adopts a virtually antithetical approach, casting the spotlight on the robotic arm and its many possibilities, and outlining the new opportunities for collaboration that these machines can offer designers, artists and creators at large. It does not adopt the perspective of production nor that of optimisation, but focusses more on experimentation, inspiration and collaboration. Robotic arms have expanded beyond their traditional industrial applications, presenting creators with opportunities to explore innovative production methods and new forms of expression. A rising generation of designers, artists, and architects is repurposing machines, originally designed for different tasks, for creative purposes. These machines are now being employed in collaborative and alternative ways, offering novel possibilities. However, embracing robotics in creative endeavors still involves a steep learning curve and significant financial investments. Over the past two decades, some production machines initially meant for industrial use have become accessible to designers, architects, and artists. Examples include 3D printers, laser cutters, and CNC milling machines. These tools, while initially intended for production, have found new life in the realms of creation and experimentation. They are now widely accessible in art and design school, fablabs or art and design studios. In this landscape, industrial robotic arms, especially their collaborative versions, have emerged as valuable tools for creativity. However, there is still a lack of reliable reference resources suited for this community. The project Creative Applications for Robotics aims to address this problem by offering access to best practices and case studies that can be used to further learning, stimulate ideas and foster the integration of collaborative robots into creative practices. The project therefore focuses on the use and interaction with this type of robot in a creative environment. Our goal is to produce a guide accompanied by a set of resources and relevant case studies. This content will be available in the form of an Open Access website and a printed edition. Advances in robotics are traditionally considered to belong to the realm of engineering and computer science, yet there is growing evidence that designers and artists have much to contribute to innovation in this area. Consequently, our research question addresses real needs insofar as inspiring case studies and specific resources can greatly further the inclusion of these new tools in art and design curricula and prove a useful addition to the multidisciplinary skills of tomorrow s creators.Main applicantAlain Bellet, associate professor HES Research teamResearchers Andrea Anner (AATB) Alain Bellet Thibault Brevet (AATB) Martin Hertig Guest  lecturers / Guest designers and artists Jussi Ängeslevä Mar Canet (Varvara & Mar) Varvara Guljajeva (Varvara & Mar) Niklas Hagemann Taiyo Onorato Raphaël Pluvinage (Pinaffo – Pluvinage) Marion Pinaffo (Pinaffo – Pluvinage)DurationFebruary 2022 – October 2023Supported byECAL/École cantonale d art de Lausanne Réserve stratégique de la HES-SO (RCDAV)PartnersAATB – Practice for non-industrial roboticsStudents“Production Line” Workshop, May 2023 BA1 Media & Interaction Design & BA1 Industrial Design Abla Bolassi Owoussi, Alexander Bryant Paynter, Alexandre Li, Alexine Sierro, Alice Graff, Aryana Noorani, Aurélien Clerc, Baptiste Godart, Charlotte Jobin, Charlotte Waridel, Elena Biasi, Emilie Maier, Eva Reymond, Fernandez Oriana Gonzalez, Flavia Renaud, François Ader, Gaia Vitali, Isaure Nicolet, Jean-Elie Matile, Jeremy Loup, Joab Schneiter, Julie Tena, Lélie Guiochet, Livia Schmid, Mael Sandoz, Maëlle Rotten, Mathias Liniger, Matteo De Carlo, Matthieu Rigelo, Mehdin Talovic, Melchior Myard, Noah Stanley, Olivia Capol, Quentin Kohler, Salla Vallotton, Sasha Iatsenia, Thomas Gaudin, Titouan Longatte, Valère Zen-Ruffinen

The Raving Age. Histories and figures of youth Project
The Raving Age. Histories and figures of youth

The Raving Age. Histories and figures of youth This research project questions what has come of youth – a conceptual, aesthetic, and political figure that was born with modernity – in the visual arts, popular culture, and the humanities. Conversely, the project addresses what the problematic category of “youth” has brought about in contemporary art and thought. If youth is a classic object for anthropological, sociological, or historiographical studies, the contemporary grasp of its aesthetic and political contours has proven to be a much more difficult task. Indeed, it is seen as an ill-defined object, constantly shifting, difficult to dissociate from the historical background against which it arises – to such an extent that, by being so much a part of the present in its most atmospheric dimension, youth seems to become its image, its most exhaustive yet also most fleeting portrait, meant to be renewed at each moment of history. It is at this precise point that this research project seeks to grasp its logic, not only to describe youth, but to use it as its very method. This project does not intend to reproduce the categories that sociological or anthropological studies of youth have constructed, nor to reiterate the clichés that cultural industries have projected onto it, but to make the inextricable nature of the aesthetic and political dimensions of youth perceptible and intelligible. By exploring the processes by which youth is constituted through its forms of representation, this project seeks to grasp it as an allegory that will help rethink the “contemporary” through its most lively milieu.Main applicantVincent NormandResearch teamVincent Normand Philippe Azoury Stéphanie Moisdon Lecturers and researchers Julie Ackermann, Mohammed Almusibli, Ludivine Bantigny, Eric Baudelaire, Persis Bekkering, Federico Campagna, David Douard, Florian Gaité, Agnès Gayraud, Tristan Garcia, Guillaume Heuguet, Ingrid Luquet-Gad, Julia Marchand, Caroline Poggi, Simon Reynolds, Gisèle Vienne, Jonathan VinelDurationSeptember 2021 – September 2023Supported byECAL/École cantonale d art de Lausanne Réserve stratégique de la HES-SO (RCDAV)PartnerLe Consortium (Dijon, France)AssistantShirin Yousefi

So how can we live better – 2023 #2 Project
So how can we live better – 2023 #2

So how can we live better – 2023 #2 Beyond questions of functionality, comfort and individual or collective well-being, the built environment is able to respond in a stimulating way to societal, energy and environmental challenges. The work space, the living space, the public space, the interior space, the street, are carried by real statements of intent that motivate their forms, following certain principles such as climate transition, densification, ecology and energy transition.... The 2nd year Graphic Design students worked on the production of a communication based on one of these principles (or others) and on the architectural realization which refers to it in order to promote it. The hours Edition Time is an elusive element dictated by architectural elements or objects, but this reissue of The hours takes us to a more fundamental and biological vision. By Srumenti per guardare la natura Edition By État des Lieux Edition & Animation There s the dock, the bench and the fish bench. But the most pleasant bench is the public bench. Accessible to all, it offers a supposedly charming view that we all share. Only one person won t see the same thing as the other. So I chose a bench and tied two envelopes to it. The first envelope contains blank pieces of paper measuring nine by six centimetres and a grey pencil. On it is written: "Take a piece of paper and answer the following question: What do you see? Then put your answer in the other envelope. The second envelope is empty and unmarked. État des lieux transcribes the results of this extraordinary experiment. All the documents are arranged chronologically and are supplemented by transcriptions of notes from his calendars. Links between the images have been added to show the global aspect of his work. By Rome was not build in 5.5 years Edition Waiting is inevitable in daily life, whether it s in store queues or public transportation. This waiting time can significantly influence our perception of time. By becoming aware of the time we spend waiting, which accumulates to 5.5 years over a lifetime, we can better understand its value. Comparing this waiting time to the duration required to build famous architectural monuments, we realize how precious it is. This analysis highlights the importance of managing our waiting time productively, using it for meaningful activities, personal reflection, or productivity. In summary, becoming aware of the impact of waiting in our lives encourages us to use these moments more intentionally. By

Collector – 2023 During the visual identity course with Adeline Mollard, the students had to develop an identity project promoting a collection chosen by them. Each project includes the design of a catalogue contextualising and presenting the collection, together with the design of a triptych of posters. Pas de publicité, merci "Pas de publicité, merci." This collection brings together a variety of unwanted newspapers, flyers and advertisements found daily in letterboxes near Lausanne.  With no addressees, these advertisements lose their original usefulness. Ici prochainement votre appartement

Marjolaine Rey – Ici prochainement votre appartement Ici Prochainement Votre Appartement is the transition from private property to public space. On the eve of moving out of the family home, but especially in view of its imminent demolition, I have placed La Maison (The House) in a brand-new space, i.e. a book. This book, more than a personal monologue, is an invitation to enter through text and image. From the gate to the garden to the door, all the way to the attic, where the library lies. Iconography drawn from this library has an impact on the layout of the entire volume. The space of the book is my playground. The quarto format conceals half of the content between the pages. It is up to the readers to decide whether or not they want to enter each room of La Maison when they visit. Welcome to my home, soon to be yours…

Directing workshop with Yann Gonzalez Project
Directing workshop with Yann Gonzalez

Directing workshop with Yann Gonzalez In partnership with La Manufacture, the Master Cinema ECAL/HEAD  invited director Yann Gonzalez to take part in a directing workshop. Professor: The most crucial challenge in working on the question of theatricality was to create links between the students of the Master ECAL/HEAD, and those of La Manufacture - Stage directing Master. Theatricality is organic to my cinephilia and, indeed, to my films. By showing the students extracts from opposite ends of the spectrum, from Chantal Akerman s Toute une nuit to John Waters Desperate Living, from Daniel Schmid s Cette nuit ou jamais to a clip from Palmbomen II, I wanted to convey this idea of a plural theatricality, by turns playful and grotesque, hypnotic and lyrical. In short, theatricality as a tool for freedom. And that s what we set out to do, all of us together, during this short workshop week: to create bursts of freedom within the limits of a collective exercise with no resources - two days of preparation and reflection, two days of filming, one day of editing. Starting with a basic constraint and narrative, two groups of six students opened up their most unbridled imaginations and shared roles and functions with a group spirit that was a pleasure to behold. Le soir même, lors du bal du village, Joseph est obligé de choisir entre abandonner sa vie d ici ou laisser partir la femme qu il aime. Se lance alors une dernière valse. Student s comment This is the pitch for my diploma film, shot in April 2023. Driven by a reel desire for fiction, these are the challenges related to period film that imposed themselves on me. These constraints, in particular those related to the decors, proved to be very stimulating for me during the writing. The result is a film of around twenty minutes, the culmination of a very rewarding year. This project was indeed an opportunity for me to better understand the role of production or casting. Documentary film workshop with Guillaume Brac – 2023

Documentary film workshop with Guillaume Brac – 2023 2nd year students took part in a documentary workshop led by Guillaume Brac, on the theme of friendship. Head of workshop: Guest teachers: (editing) (photogrpahy) (writing) "After a successful first experience last year, I once again had the pleasure of helping second-year students make their documentary films. This time, I didn t give them a mandate, but rather a theme - friendship - to interpret freely. What I wanted above all was to get them to film the bond, the feeling. To delve into their experiences and emotions. The watchword of the workshop was sincerity. To make the most accurate, honest film possible, in terms of point of view and relationship to the filmed subject. To find the cinematographic language, the directing, that corresponds to and resembles them. This workshop is as fascinating as it is demanding, because it involves students getting to know themselves better, as filmmakers of course, but also as people. From these almost five months of work and trial and error have emerged ten very fine films, all very personal, dealing with a wide variety of bonds. The bond with the distant or missing father, with the prisoner to whom we write, with friends left on the other side of the world, with the party gang, with the friend undergoing reconstruction, with the famous young actor, with old Michel, with God, with his dog. We cry at some, laugh at others. And we tell ourselves that making films is a great way to grow up." Upcycling Design Project
Upcycling Design

Upcycling Design For the second year, students from the MAS in Design for Luxury and Craftsmanship were invited to create objects based on the container produced for La Prairie s flagship range. The glass packaging bears the signature cobalt blue that defines the Swiss brand s Luxe Skin Caviar collection, the result of a meeting with Niki de Saint Phalle in the 1980s. Noticing the vivid cobalt blue in the world-famous artist s paintings and sculptures, La Prairie enquired about the significance of this blue in her work. For Niki de Saint Phalle, this resplendent hue, her favourite colour, symbolised femininity, boldness, strength and serenity, describing it as "the colour of joy and luck". With the help of glassmakers based in Switzerland, these glass containers were cut, drilled or sandblasted to give the object a function, while retaining the brand s codes.

ECAL AT VISIONS DU REEL: Masterclass and films Event
ECAL AT VISIONS DU REEL: Masterclass and films

ECAL AT VISIONS DU REEL: Masterclass and films,21–30.04.2023,Théâtre de Marens, Nyon As part of the film festival Visions du Réel (April 21 to 30) in Nyon, Lucrecia Martel will give a masterclass on Tuesday, April 25, organized in partnership with La Cinémathèque suisse. Four films from ECAL Cinema Department students and alumni will also be part of the programmation. MASTERCLASS: LUCRECIA MARTEL Filmmaker and screenwriter Salta, Argentina Tuesday, April 25, 2pm Usine à Gaz 2, Nyon Visions du Réel s guest of honour Lucrecia Martel will give a masterclass, which will explore her body of work and her relationship with reality. A retrospective of her films will also be presented during the edition. Lucrecia Martel gained international fame with her first feature length film La ciénaga (2001), shot in her home region, and has since embodied the resurgence of Argentinian film, both nationally and internationally. The director s filmography, which consists of 4 feature length films and 25 titles in total (including different kinds of projects), has constantly made a mark on her country in a post-dictatorial context, as well as at the most prestigious festivals. Lucrecia Martel s films use a highly sensual cinematographical grammar to examine the existential crisis of the Argentinian middle classes, the inner workings of society and the country s suffocating social mechanism, as well as post-colonial issues. She achieves all this while relentlessly evoking, implicitly, the history of her country and the ghosts that inhabit it. Her attention to detail – particularly to sound, noise and dialogues – and the kaleidoscopic approach of her work are in keeping with a dual tradition that is both oral and adventurous in cinematographical terms, steeped in a joyous cinephilia. Rooted in the filmmaker s very familiar territories and experiences, Lucrecia Martel s body of work borrows from a multitude of genres and offers a rich and fascinating hybridisation of fiction and reality. After Terminal Norte in 2021, she is currently working on new non-fiction feature length film that should be released in 2023. Moderated by Emilie Bujès, artistic director of Visions du Réel and Paolo Moretti, head of ECAL Cinema Department. An event in collaboration with La Cinémathèque suisse Text: Vision du Réel FILMS In the occasion of Visions du Réel from April 21 to 30, 4 films from ECAL Cinema Department and alumni are programmed. ECAL Milano 2023: U.F.O.G.O. Event
ECAL Milano 2023: U.F.O.G.O.

ECAL Milano 2023: U.F.O.G.O.,18–23.04.2023,Spazio Orso 16, Milano On the occasion of the Milan Design Week (17-23 April 2023), ECAL presents U.F.O.G.O., an exhibition that provides a solution for a better integration of wind turbines in our landscapes. In 2023, the significant role of renewable energies in tackling the energy crisis is blatant. In this context, wind turbines are once again seen as a promising idea. However, concerns about their environmental and social impact represent a significant obstacle to their deployment: how can we respond to the problem of their visual intrusion in the landscape? ECAL addresses this issue by emphasising the importance of design in the creative process. Convinced that, should design be placed at the heart of the thought process, wind turbines could fit into our landscapes not only sensitively, but beautifully, Master Product Design students present eight innovative projects. In October 2022, sixteen Master students travelled to Fogo Island (Newfoundland, Canada), a particularly windy region whose climate makes it an ideal location for the deployment of environmentally friendly electricity generation devices. In collaboration with the Shorefast Foundation of Fogo Island, the young designers immersed themselves in the landscape and explored ways to meet the needs of the inhabitants, while taking into account logistical imperatives and environmental constraints. Produced in consultation with engineers from HEIG-VD/School of Management and Engineering Vaud, the models integrate the technical, technological and legal principles necessary for their implementation. Through their subtle design, they bring innovative, reality-based solutions, favouring their acceptance by local populations. Depending on the project, the wind turbines respond to existing problems or current needs. EVIND is designed to enable the charging of electric cars. PNEUM, whose structure is actually a greenhouse, supports food production and self-sufficiency. PYRE offers an alternative to expensive imported building materials through 3D printing. WINDSEED is an offshore wind turbine with a structure that supports seaweed farming – a booming economy on the island. Others tell the story of Fogo Island, its long history of fishing industry and its unique architecture. The island is home to old fish processing factories that could become the foundation of RR REUSE, a model that enhances cultural and historical heritage. CLIFFHANGER seeks to approximate the architecture of the island s traditional stilt houses. FOGO FLAGS, decorated with flags and located on the edge of the coastline, positions itself as the symbol of Fogo, providing a first impression for visitors upon their arrival. For air safety reasons, wind turbines can only be white, but FLO bypasses this restriction with a relief texture that features a palette of colours when viewed from the ground, becoming a landmark in the landscape. U.F.O.G.O. is the presentation of these eight prospective but realistic projects, which open new paths and push boundaries. As a media partner of the exhibition, design journal Disegno has presented the research and its results in a publication. In collaboration with the Shorefast Foundation of Fogo Island (Newfoundland, Canada) et la HEIG-VD/School of Engineering and Management. As a media partner of the exhibition, design journal Disegno has presented the research and its results in a publication available at the exhibition site.

Lecture ECAL - Alain Guiraudie Event
Lecture ECAL - Alain Guiraudie

Lecture ECAL - Alain Guiraudie,18.04.2023,Auditorium Leenaards, ECAL Invited by ECAL Cinema and Fine Arts departments, the French director and artist Alain Guiraudie will give a lecture on Tuesday April 18, 2023 at 6pm. Born in 1964, Alain Guiraudie grew up in Bournazel, a village in Aveyron where his parents were farmers. After high school, he studied History in Montpellier, but stopped to work and write novels that were not published. Having above all the desire to make films, he directed a first short film, Les héros sont immortels, in 1990, followed by a second and a third. This led him to make longer films, including Du soleil pour les gueux in 2000 and Ce vieux rêve qui bouge in 2001. He has since directed 6 feature films including L Inconnu du lac and Rester vertical. The latest one, Viens je t emmène, was released in March 2022. He has also published two novels with P.O.L.: Ici commence la nuit in 2014 and Rabalaïre in 2021. He will exhibit for the first time at Panorama 2019, then at the Crèvecœur Gallery in Paris, at the Consortium Museum in Dijon and at the Daniel Buccholz Gallery in Berlin in 2023. Moderated by Paolo Moretti, head of the Cinema department and Stéphanie Moisdon, head of Master of Fine Arts.

Fiction film workshop with Thierry de Peretti Project
Fiction film workshop with Thierry de Peretti

Fiction film workshop with Thierry de Peretti The 2022 fiction film workshop was lead by Thierry de Peretti. Head of workshop: Related workshops : (cinematography) (editing) "For the fiction workshop of the second year class that the ECAL film department entrusted me with, I proposed to Camille Anker, Mégane Brugger, Pol Barrelet, Naïla Ebinger, Benjamin Eggenberger, Matteo Friberg, Donika Gashi, Rose Higorom, MariaLuisa Vaz, Hervé Ossent, to think together about the idea of "adaptation". Being myself in the throes of the exercise with my next feature film, adapted from a novel, it was a way to connect in the most obvious way with them. When we talk about adaptation we often think of the novel, but everything can be adapted, a play, a poem, a short story, a film, a part or a few lines of a novel, an article or an interview, a memory, a dream, a text that we have written ourselves. What seems important to me is the way in which one translates, understands, betrays or is faithful. I also asked them to be as economical as possible in the means they used to shoot: few shots, no camera movements, no special effects, no external (artificial) light, as few locations as possible. We were going to work together on what would be some of their first films and I wanted to encourage them to make simple, quick, clean experiments, free from the will to seduce: films of self-taught people. I was deeply touched to see how each one of them took up the exercise, sometimes with an imperious and immediate intuition, other times by taking a steeper and more worried path. Today, ten new, free proposals remain, which in the end care little about the final result. These proposals are all clear and risky, both poetically and technically: they are films behind which we recognize each of the future filmmakers they will be tomorrow." ECAL Lecture - Brian Roettinger Event
ECAL Lecture - Brian Roettinger

ECAL Lecture - Brian Roettinger,05.04.2023,Cinema Studio, ECAL Present during the spring semester as part of his ECAL residency at La Becque, designer Brian Roettinger will discuss his practice and his many projects of international scope through an audiovisual and immersive approach on Wednesday, April 5 at 6pm. As a partners at Perron–Roettinger, designer Brian Roettinger has worked on creative projects with some of the world s biggest brands and musicians. Roettinger s work is an uncanny union of punk ideology with a conceptually driven mode of modernist design. He frequently employs architectural strategies such as repetition and structure, while subverting this sense of order by manipulating the production process in unexpected or “wrong” ways (think pulling the sheet out of the printer before it is done). He continues to work with a wide variety of artists and brands (Jay-Z, Florence + The Machine, Mark Ronson, SKKN by Kim, Cartier, ...) taking an holistic approach to the design process from idea to completion. His work is diverse spanning album packaging, publications, branding, campaigns, and product design. He has been nominated for numerous awards included three Art Direction Grammy s for album packaging.

ECAL LECTURE - Mario Botta Event
ECAL LECTURE - Mario Botta

ECAL LECTURE - Mario Botta,21.03.2023,IKEA Auditorium, ECAL On March 21, 2023, Mario Botta, acclaimed Swiss architect and designer, will give a lecture at ECAL on the relationship between architecture and design. Born in 1943 in Mendrisio (CH), Mario Botta was inspired by Le Corbusier, Louis I. Kahnet and Carlo Scarpa, whom he met during his studies at the University Institute of Architecture in Venice (IUAV). Starting from the single-family houses built in the Canton of Ticino, his architectural work has subsequently embraced various typologies: schools, banks, administrative offices, libraries, museums and sacred buildings. His most recent works include the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art in Charlotte (USA), the Campari headquarters and houses in Sesto San Giovanni (IT), the Tsinghua University Library in Beijing (CN) and the rehabilitation of the former Appiani estate in Treviso (IT). Since 1982 he has also been involved in design, creating the "Prima" and "Seconda" chairs for Alias, and then designing numerous seats, tables, watches and other furnishings for important companies in Europe. Among his iconic pieces are a series of 13 limited edition vases in ceramic for Atelier Rossicone, in polished pewter for Numa and in red marble for GVM La Civiltà del Marmo, and more recently the GEO vase for Lalique, as well as projects for the Riva 1920 factory, known for its furniture in natural wood.

L'Or Bleu Project
L'Or Bleu

STRAPPAZZON+ECAL Project
STRAPPAZZON+ECAL

STRAPPAZZON+ECAL Workshop with Strappazzon With the aim of broadening the horizons of graphic design students beyond the media traditionally explored during their training, Sebastian Stappazzon, co-founder of AVNIER – one of today s hottest streetwear brands launched in collaboration with French rapper OrelSan – runs a week-long workshop at ECAL. From the proposals imagined by the students, a capsule collection was born, produced in a limited edition. The entire collection will be presented and on sale at an exclusive event on 15 December 2023 at La Rasude in Lausanne. Under his direction, and with the support of Guy Meldem and the assistance of Inès Barrionuevo, we invited students to work on the creation of a complete outfit, including a cap, tracksuit, t-shirt and socks. In the course of this collaboration, the idea of developing a joint capsule collection between his eponymous brand STRAPPAZZON and ECAL emerged naturally. This initiative enabled Bachelor Graphic Design students to delve into the world of streetwear, learn about textile printing techniques and immerse themselves in a constantly evolving creative sector. The proposals imagined by the students were then carefully selected to create a coherent, surprising capsule collection, perfectly reflecting the zeitgeist. The collection will be produced in a limited edition and will go on sale shortly. The entire collection will be presented and on sale at an event in Lausanne, Switzerland, in early December 2023. REVERSIBLE JACKET 1020 & PANT 1020 are the first pieces in this exclusive collection and are available for pre-order until midnight on Monday, September 25, 2023.

Documentary film workshop with Guillaume Brac – 2022 Project
Documentary film workshop with Guillaume Brac – 2022

Documentary film workshop with Guillaume Brac – 2022 The 2022 documentary workshop was lead by Guillaume Brac. In partnership with the Lausanne Sport! ECAL film department proposed that I accompany ten second-year students on a documentary mandate financed by Lausanne Sport, the city s historic soccer club. Although I am interested in this sport, I was very clear from the start: it was not a question of making a film about soccer or the functioning of the club, but a film in which soccer would be the starting point, the spark, allowing me to go on to much more personal, intimate, singular elements. I insisted on the liberating power of the commission, at least when it is accompanied by a real freedom, which was the case here. I encouraged each student to find, if necessary to invent, the form, the device, the staging, that best corresponded to his or her sensitivity and subject. Documentary films offer to curious and adventurous filmmakers infinitely more possibilities in terms of film writing than fiction. And I believe that the films of this workshop, of an extreme diversity of forms, tones, and motifs, are a brilliant demonstration of this. ECAL × JEAN PAUL GAULTIER: Under Your Smell

ECAL × JEAN PAUL GAULTIER: Under Your Smell The exhibition Under Your Smell offers a hypnotic and immersive experience in Jean Paul Gaultier s headquarters by imagining new definitions of beauty and body expression. Under the direction of Florence Tétier and Nicolas Coulomb, 3rd year Bachelor Photography students brought to life the brand s iconic perfumes through an immersive photographic experience. In the first season, with the complicity of Claude Emmanuelle Gajan Maull, the young photographers have fluidified the iconic bottles with their gendered silhouettes — Le Mâle, Le Classique, Le Beau and La Belle — in a fresh LGBTQIA+ perspective. With this upcoming season, the project evolves around the Scandal fragrance, with the creation of still lives in which the liquid, dry and organic contrasting textures evoke the essence of the perfume, its bottle design and its complexities. Through staging, the perfumes become the backdrop for stories of transgression and fantastical projections. In addition to monumental fabric prints, giant image-cushions welcome the public to lay down and celebrate gender fluidity and the ever changing definitions of beauty and self expression. Collaboration with L’Epée 1839 Project
Collaboration with L’Epée 1839

Collaboration with L Epée 1839 Regatta Very few sports, or indeed very few human activities, merit the term ‘graceful as much as does sculling. Long, streamlined craft cutting the water like a stiletto and leaving barely a ripple are among the most elegant forms of human displacement on earth. And that sense of grace conceals both the incredible power of the oarsman and the arrow-like precision of their craft. L Epée 1839 harnesses and pays homage to the grace of sculling with La Regatta, a sleek vertical clock invoking the shape of the long thin scull, with both the power (8-day power reserve) and precision of the most elegant of watch sports. Our modern lives are often busy and, at times, even chaotic, La Regatta invokes a sense of peace and calm.

Partnerships with Mec-Art Project
Partnerships with Mec-Art

Partnerships with Mec-Art Within the framework of the partnership between ECAL/University of Art & Design Lausanne and Mec-Art (Pour la Mécanique d Art), the students of the Master in Design for Luxury & Craftsmanship had the opportunity to visit the manufactures and meet the artisans based in the town of Sainte-Croix. This region of the Franco-Swiss Jura arc gathers a great deal of know-how in watchmaking and art mechanics and is now part of UNESCO s Intangible Cultural Heritage. These visits and encounters should enable the students of the ECAL program to create simple and fun mechanical parts that will illustrate the various skills specific to the region, such as automatons, music boxes or watchmaking. Wind Shangwei Zhou, Somchai Thumthatanuk The mechanical components contrast with the natural and organic aesthetic of this clock, inspired by the iconic landscapes of Switzerland. Realized by the best craftsmen based in the small village of Sainte-Croix, this unique piece illustrates a perfect harmony between three typical Swiss mechanical arts: watches, automatons and music boxes. After every full turn of the minute hand, a music starts to ring and the blue metal pieces wave slowly, as the wind over the surface of the Leman lake. Colours, illusions and concept of time Sarah Yao Based on a gradient optical illusion by Akiyoshi Kitaoka, our eyes perceive colours differently depending on the shade of the background they are placed against. I wanted to visualise the passage of time through colour - the resulting objects are a translation of this animated effect through the use of simple but elegant mechanics.

The great disappointement (Screenplay) Project
The great disappointement (Screenplay)

Yan Ciszewski – The great disappointement (Screenplay) Two women come down from the top of a mountain, following a great disappointment. Fiction / 16 35 min Synopsis On the top of a mountain, Claire is standing still, waiting, focused. Louise, a mountain guide who accompanies her, makes her understand that it s time to go home. Disappointed, Claire accepts, and the two women start to go down the mountain, as the day fades out. In a mystical mountain, where people go to seek the ghosts of their past, Claire and Louise will make some peculiar encounters. Student s comment After the loss of her twin sister, Claire goes to the mountains where they grew up with a specific goal: to find her ghost. Accompanied by Louise, a withdrawn and secretive mountain guide, she embarks on an arduous, several-days long walk. Soon enough, Claire understands that she is not the only one grieving. The mountain confronts the women with their respective ghosts and inner demons. For my degree, I wrote a feature-length script and directed a short movie based on that same script. The story of the short is slightly different, but it shares the same setting and atmosphere. This short provides a hint of what the feature-length will look like. Between family drama and ghost story, the film plays with the codes of different genres. Yan Ciszewski
