Thorgeir Kristinn Blöndal – Flaneri Flaneri is a cursive script-like typeface that invites references born after industrialization to find its place. Torn between the human stroke and its translation into the machine, it steps into a world where authenticity is becoming harder to detect, and a longing for “human made” becomes greater. While wandering around many places, Flaneri finds inspiration in everything from Jan van de Velde s art of writing to my grandmother s and my own handwriting, the digital translation carries questions on what is to be left out, polished or even highlighted. Resulting in a cursive font with a physical texture and broken connections, leaving the observer with a feeling of what has been or what is to come.

Shaping the future of cinema: ECAL listen to their graduates Just a few days before the opening of the Locarno Film Festival 2024, where several ECAL films will be shown, ECAL and HEAD unveil the results of a survey aimed at shaping the future of cinema training. To guide the development of their HES-SO Bachelor s and Master s programs in Film, the Film Departments at ECAL and HEAD have collaborated to conduct a survey of their graduates. To carry out this project, the research and polling institute gfs.bern was commissioned to design the online questionnaire, while the Observatoire romand de la culture was responsible for organizing focus groups. This is the first initiative of its kind to be carried out among film graduates. Two key findings emerge from the survey: 77% of graduates surveyed are currently working in the film industry Nearly 2/3 of graduates surveyed would choose to study film at ECAL or HEAD again The aim is to fine-tune ECAL and HEAD film courses by analyzing the career paths and feedback on the academic experience of the last fifteen graduating classes. This information is essential for making informed decisions to improve the curricula.

So, how can we live better? Beyond questions of functionality, comfort and individual or collective well-being, the built environment is capable of responding in a stimulating way to societal, energy and environmental challenges. Workplaces, homes, public spaces, interiors and streets are all driven by real statements of intent that motivate their design. The 2nd year Graphic Design students worked on a communication based on one of these principles (or others) and on the architectural creation that refers to it in order to promote it. Ailleurs Ici Édition Ailleurs Ici is the story of 132 route de la Fruitière. During their retirement, the two former teachers René and Anne-Marie Favre explored the world. Their travels are above all encounters, the interests of enthusiasts. A history book of faraway lands for René, and a fantastic but tangible herbarium for Annie. But when they return from these expeditions, it s their house that changes. As if undergoing a second metamorphosis. The old renovated barn at 132 Route de la Fruitière has been given a final chrysalis. The walls are filled with colourful objects and prints of exotic negatives. The stones here are filled with prints from elsewhere. Without intending to, René and Annie have turned 132 Route la Fruitière into a museum inhabited by its curators. Elsewhere Here is their catalogue, retracing each of René and Annie s journeys through objects as mystical as they are foreign. Par LEs vieux Blocs Édition Les vieux blocs traces the history of a group of buildings in the Marolles district of Brussels. Emblematic of Art Nouveau architecture, it now represents a meeting point between a social building and an architectural one. This project invites us to explore this controversial dynamic by bringing together the tourist side and the social side in the same architecture, with a testimonial from a neighbour and images of tourists strolling through the district. Par Terrain Gurzelen Édition It s important, even temporarily, to create parentheses in society, bubbles of utopia that can burst at any moment. The energy that emanates from these ephemeral moments is unique. Gurz is a sensory stroll that hijacks, appropriates and translates the materiality of the Terrain de la Gurzelen, a football pitch temporarily occupied by the residents of the city of Biel. The aim is to leave a trace of the life of this surreal place, which will soon disappear. Par 14 21 Vidéo This simulation shows the duality between the inflows and the threats posed by the Grande Dixence dam to the population of the valleys below. It traces the hypothetical course of water from the dam to the town of Sierre. Par CITY STADIUM LEAGUE Édition The city stadium is a multi-purpose urban facility designed for sporting activities and an ideal meeting place for local residents, reinforcing social cohesion. CITY STADIUM LEAGUE, halfway between the famous vignette collection albums and reportage, is an immersive object retracing an amateur football tournament held on 7 and 8 May 2024 in Renens. It highlights not only the sporting event itself, but also the social and unifying impact of the event. Par Hotel à gogo Édition The aim was to pay homage to the abandoned Grand Hôtel Chaumont & Golf in Neuchâtel. Having closed, because it was recluse of any civilization, in the heights of Neuchâtel. At the time it was in operation, the hotel used to organise themed activities to attract customers, but these were unsuccessful and the hotel went bankrupt. So I based the concept of my edition on this theme, recreating melancholy costume scenes inside the hotel, as if someone had never stopped carrying out these activities in this place frozen in time. I did all this with the help of official documents I d picked up on the spot, such as activity reports and flyers promoting the evenings, the bands, the fancy dress costumes and the concerts. These are included in the edition to accompany the photographic sequence. Par

ECAL AT LAUSANNE JARDINS,15.06–05.10.2024,Lausanne To mark Lausanne Jardins 2024, ECAL s Bachelor Industrial Design is presenting two projects designed to make the most of the shores of Lake Geneva. MIRADOR by Victoria Guffroy et Noé Chassot Mirador is a giant watery playground on the shore of Lake Geneva. Three stainless steel water cannons, arranged in a triangle, pump water from the lake and spray it over long distances, providing both fun and relief from the summer heat. Once the cannon is full, simply press the handle to propel the water in the desired direction. Fire away! PIERROT by Charlotte Dubois Pierrot—a homophone of the French words “pierre” (rock) and “eau” (water)—evokes two characteristic features of the shore of Lake Geneva. These rocky outcrops are punctuated by platforms of different sizes, small ones for crossing and large ones for relaxing on, allowing bathers to reach the lake while protecting the delicate and rare ecosystems that surround them. These platforms, constructed from wood and wire mesh filled with pebbles, hug the shape of the rocks and provide a new habitat for biodiversity to flourish. Here, the wire mesh—a popular architectural feature—holds large quantities of rocks, exploiting the weight, shape and other characteristics of this natural, locally available material.TEACHERVENUEPromenade de Vidy 7 1007 LausanneSTUDENTSMirador: Victoria Guffroy , Noé Chassot Pierrot: Charlotte DuboisDATES & SCHEDULE15.06-05.10.2024WEBSITElausannejardins.chPARTNERSMirador: Metal-System Diserens Sàrl Pierrot: Ateliers de menuiserie - Ville de Lausanne, Centre de formation C-FOR!

BY HAND Even if it seems that digital is taking over analog, there s still an interest and need for us as humans to have a physical connection to our daily tools. So many designers swear by their drawing routine and real-life experimentation still plays a important role in our practices. Under the guidance of Friederike Daumiller students took the challenge to design their own interpretations of hand writing and hand drawing instruments always referring to their hands-on tests and experience.

ECAL×JEAN PAUL GAULTIER: UNDER YOUR SMELL After Paris, Miami and Lausanne, the exhibition Under Your Smell, a brilliant collaboration between the ECAL and Jean Paul Gaultier, is now causing a sensation at the Saatchi Gallery in London and at Gallery X by Parco in Tokyo STUDENTSGwendoline Albasini, Tony Altermatt, Matteo Angelé, Dominique Bartels, , , Laure Brandford Griffith, , Noa Chevalley, , Julie Corday, , , Sara De Brito Faustino, Yann Difford, Jessica Dreier, , Diego Fellmann, , Valerie Geissbühler, Eloïse Genoud, Florian Hilt, , Samara Krähenbühl, , Ulises Lozano, Angèle Marignac-Serra, , Lisa Mazenauer, Marvin Merkel, Inès Mermoud, , , , , Basil Pérot, Yolane Rais, , Phinn Sallin-Mason, Lea Sblandano, Camille Spiller, Samuel Spreyz, Gaétan Uldry, , , Antoine WoeffrayUNDER THE DIRECTION OFFlorence Tétier - directrice de création Jean Paul Gaultier Nicolas Coulomb - photographe et consultant Novembre GlobalHEAD OF PROGRAMMEASSISTANTS, , COORDINATIONUnder the direction of Florence Tétier (Jean Paul Gaultier) and Nicolas Coulomb (Novembre Magazine), 3rd year Bachelor Photography students of ECAL present a visual interpretation of Jean Paul Gaultier s perfumes. In the first season, with the complicity of Claude Emmanuelle Gajan Maull, the young photographers have fluidified the iconic bottles with their gendered silhouettes — Le Mâle, Le Classique, Le Beau and La Belle — in a fresh LGBTQIA+ perspective. With this upcoming season, the project evolves around the Scandal fragrance, with the creation of still lives in which the liquid, dry and organic contrasting textures evoke the essence of the perfume, its bottle design and its complexities. Through staging, the perfumes become the backdrop for stories of transgression and fantastical projections. Under Your Smell offers a hypnotic and immersive experience through monumental fabric prints all around the exhibition areas. Giant image-cushions welcome the public to lay down and celebrate gender fluidity and the ever changing definitions of beauty and self expression.RELATED EVENTS

ECAL x FREITAG - Access over ownership Second-year industrial design students collaborated with Zurich-based brand FREITAG Lab, leveraging their expertise in environmental awareness, material upcycling, and the circular economy. Using the FREITAG manifesto as a foundation, they developed new shared products centered on the principle of "access over ownership." Under the direction of designer Christophe Guberan, students have explored various options for borrowable items. Particularly relevant for temporary-use clothing, accessories, and furniture, this approach enabled the young designers to benefit from FREITAG s expertise in circular economy, material upcycling, services, product development and disruptive innovation. “Design has the responsibility and power to make positive changes towards a circular future. We shared our know-how with the students to raise their awareness of this vision”, says FREITAG Circle Lead Product Design and Development Tu Van Giang. Seeking to fundamentally alter the consumer experience through product design itself, ECAL and FREITAG invite consumers to rethink their relationship with goods while adopting a more sustainable and conscious lifestyle.NEBULA by Disposable plastic ponchos are often used by tourists as a quick fix to stay warm and dry while travelling, but they are as quickly worn out as they are quickly discarded. Made from reclaimed B-grade car airbag textile, NEBULA is designed to replace single-use plastic ponchos. Designed to be as simple as possible to produce, one size fits all and easy to clean and maintain, without compromising on quality and comfort. The ponchos would be borrowed and returned to FREITAG stores, but could also be returned to hotels or mailboxes for convenient retrieval while travelling. Pairs stylishly with the FLAT BOOTS overshoes. FLAT BOOTS by , Most of us own rain boots that we only use a few days a year, according to the weather. FLAT BOOTS are waterproof overshoes that you can borrow for as long as you need them for those rainy days, outdoor activities, or if you ve forgotten your boots when you re on the road. The overshoe features a thermo-welded heavy-duty tarp upper and a rubber sole. Its unique split sole design allows the boots to be rolled up for easy storage and optimised production. Combined with the NEBULA poncho, they would keep you dry while you re out and about. PACK-A-ROOM by , & Thought for students who are most likely to move from one flat to another, study abroad for a semester or have an extra flatmate for a few months, PACK-A-ROOM is a collection of flatpack furniture that is easy to transport and assemble. Made from B-grade airbag and tarp, fitted on a frame made of standard pipes and robust Maker Pipe connectors; the use of modular and detachable connecting parts allows for durable, expandable systems and extends the life cycle of the furniture. Comprising a bed, wardrobe and chair, you would have everything you need to feel at home in just a few turns of hex key. FIESTA KIT by It s party time! You go to the corner shop to buy everything you need: disposable plates, disposable glasses, disposable napkins and, of course, decorations, garlands and disposable balloons, all of which will be thrown away at the end of the day. The FIESTA KIT offers an alternative to disposable garlands and balloons. Made from truck tarp off-cuts from FREITAG bag production, rolled up in a handy pouch, it is a unique and colourful decoration option for celebrating more consciously. F-BÖÖTLE by In Switzerland, river drifting is a popular activity for groups of friends and families. As soon as the temperatures rise, everyone grabs their paddles and pumps and drifts down the river in brightly-coloured rubber boats. Unfortunately, many of these inflatable boats are abandoned on the banks, sometimes after just one use. The problem has become so serious that some towns, like Bern, have taken action by installing massive permanent containers to help maintain the shores of the Aare river. The inflatable F-BÖÖTLE, made from a tractor inner tube combined with truck tarp and safety belts, offers a sustainable alternative for this summertime water adventure. Designed to be easily inflated and deflated, it can be effortlessly rolled up into a backpack for convenient carrying. AIRtube by Translating FREITAG s bag-making expertise to the furniture industry is perhaps a bit of a stretch. Applying its radical principles to furniture rental, however, makes perfect sense. AIRTUBE is an inflatable sofa system made from dead-stock tractor inner tubes and seatbelt webbing. One section of the sofa is made up of four inner tubes constrained and shaped by straps. Each element can accommodate two people and could be easily transported from a FREITAG store to wherever you need it. AIRTUBE is a sturdy, playful and comfy option for events, parties, indoors or out on a sunny day relaxing in a park. shift by When we move from one home to another, we consume a lot of items in a short space of time — cardboard boxes, bags, all sorts of tapes, bubble wrap, etc. — most of which end up in the rubbish or, at best, in a recycling bin. SHIFT is a reusable moving kit made up of a series of sturdy, box-shaped tarp bags ranging in size from 43L, 62L and 82L, plus a long, thin bag for all bulky items. You could borrow as many bags as you need from your local FREITAG store, for a carefree move.

SLAP ! Whether it s a parade, a particle accelerator or a dance ball, SLAP invites you to inhabit a space from a gravitational perspective. Positioned on the boundary between two and three dimensions, the works are subject to centrifugal laws and find themselves exchanging with one another to create fortuitous narratives, as if the continuous round of which they were a part of had suddenly come to a halt. The exhibition space becomes the site of a fundamentally social event - in terms of the works it hosts and the exhibition context - and reveals the social perspective that the works hold in rela- tion to each other. Like a boring chat with a friend of a friend, some pieces are overwhelmed by their conversations, while others lend themselves easily to them. You ll have no hesitation in intercepting some of the phrases exchanged between the works, while having the opportunity to: reply/nego- tiate/argue with the social time-space that SLAP, as a real static meeting point, offers for an evening.

La mariée et le ketchup,12.04–05.05.2024,Square du 14-juin, Renens ECAL s Bachelor of Photography presents The Bride and the Ketchup in Renens. Renens, the capital of the Ouest Lausannois region, is characterized by its diverse cultural mix and influences, welcoming some 121 nationalities. A city of passers-by, a creative city, an entertaining city, an endearing city, you ll stroll through and discover welcoming cafés, picturesque boutiques with windows adorned with curious curios and treasures, restaurants with specialties from elsewhere, and much more. Within a well-defined perimeter, between the train station and the ECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne, the 19 1st-year Bachelor of Photography students went out to meet the small shops that make up Renens. Beyond their shop windows, these local heroes are the town s key players. Baklava with glistening honey, preparing food in the back kitchen, a wry smile - in a documentary or sometimes staged approach, the students captured the authenticity, commitment and everyday reality of these shopkeepers. Through portraits, still lifes and architectural images, the Bride and Ketchup project takes us on an eclectic visual journey, with its varied flavors and multiple cultural landscapes.DATES & SCHEDULE12.04–05.05.2024OPENINGApril 11 2024, 6PMVENUESquare du 14-juin 1020 RenensMAPSTUDENTS, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , UNDER THE DIRECTION OF HEAD OF PROGRAMME ASSISTANTS,

L ECAL AT VISIONS DU RÉEL: MASTERCLASS & ECAL FILMS,12–21.04.2024,Nyon As guest of honour at the 55th edition of the Visions du Réel festival in Nyon, filmmaker Jia Zhang-Ke will be giving a masterclass on Tuesday 16 April, organised in partnership with the Cinémathèque suisse. The programme also includes six films by the ECAL s Cinema Department and alumni. MASTERCLASS: JIA ZHANG-KE Cinéaste, Chine Moderated by Jean-Michel Frodon, film critic and journalist A leading figure in independent Chinese cinema, and contemporary cinema more broadly, Jia Zhang-Ke will be presenting a masterclass exploring his captivating and multifaceted oeuvre which examines the history of his country and the characters who inhabit it. A retrospective of his films will run throughout the festival edition. Born in 1970 in the mining region of Shanxi, bordered by the Great Wall of China, Jia Zhang-Ke is a leading light in contemporary cinema. He belongs to a generation of Chinese filmmakers who were profoundly affected by the Tiananmen Square protests. His diverse filmography, which comprises more than 20 short and feature works, borrows elements from both genre and non-fiction cinema. Switching from taught thrillers to documentaries and encompassing a myriad hybrid formats woven together by non-professional actors, fictional works on a canvas of reality, and fantasies bypassing otherwise restrained stories, Jia Zhang-Ke has spent two decades creating a filmography as coherent as it is shifting. His stylistically diverse oeuvre deploys the full range of cinematographic techniques (16 and 35mm, DV, HD, etc.). Approaching his subject as a visual artist, Jia Zhang-Ke offers a subtle and subversive immersion in Chinese society, imbued with a sublimated realism. Resisting censorship and tirelessly defending the cultural significance of his country s cinematic output, Jia Zhang-Ke weaves long-form, epic-style stories to explore personal and multifaceted journeys that challenge the notion of dissolution of the individual within the national narrative. Ever willing to wrestle with the realities of China s recent history, the filmmaker offers a profoundly humanist representation that draws on memories and recollections. To achieve this, Jia Zhang-Ke creates a narrative polysemy that focuses its gaze on the everyday lives of ordinary people living in “intermediate towns” scattered between the rural life and that of the country s burgeoning megacities. By doing so, Jia Zhang-Ke s films dissect the promises and mirages offered under the forced march of modernisation in effect since the 1960s. They examine the effects of this collective story, specifically the imposition of state capitalism on human beings, by providing a romantic and sensitive counter-narrative. An essential and uncompromising filmography that has often fallen foul of the government s strict censorship regime. An event in collaboration with the Cinémathèque suisse. “The Eskimo in the Mojave Desert”: Herbert Matter, a Designer Across Scenes and Genres Matter s career was that of a multidisciplinary, international designer working across commerce and culture. He was not only a graphic artist but also a photographer, type designer, art director, teacher and film-maker. His work in the field of advertising and editorial design, his collaborations with artists, his self-commissioned work, his photography and film outputs and his long-serving position as an educator provide as many entry points to analyse the impact of migration and an international network on a graphic designer s career. It also provides a case study to analyse the professional model of the designer working as photographer and layout artist simultaneously. The historiography on the Swiss graphic designer and photographer Herbert Matter (1907–1984) is characterised by a dichotomy. On the one hand, his oeuvre is partially well-known; some of his works are regarded as amongst “the most celebrated posters in design history” and have been published so widely that they make him a canonical figure of the highest degree. On the other hand, scholarship on his career is often shallow, repetitive and limited to the recurrent reproductions of a few selected artefacts. As is often the case with the canon, Matter s high visibility does not translate into a refined understanding of his work. Scholarship fails to contextualise him as a multifaceted graphic designer, photographer, and film-maker whose career did not fit within a specific style or movement, but reflected influences ranging from French poster artists, Swiss modernism and American pop culture. His profile was so unusual that the American graphic designer Paul Rand, who was active in corporate identity and branding, quipped: “I have always had the feeling that H[erbert] M[atter] on Madison Avenue was like an Eskimo in the Mohavi [sic] desert”, that is an out-of-place character in the world of New York advertising. The present project therefore provides a more nuanced discourse on Matter s career by relating his visual work to his influences and his migration between the three scenes in which he was active: Switzerland, France and the United States. It answers the following question: How did Herbert Matter s migration, transnational experiences and network shape his approach to graphic design?ApplicantsDr Jonas Berthod Prof. Gilles GavilletResearch teamDr Jonas Berthod (ECAL) Prof. Louise Paradis (Université du Québec à Montréal UQAM) Prof. Gilles Gavillet (ECAL)Period1.12.2023 – 31.1.2025Supported byHES-SO, Réseau de Compétences Design et Arts Visuels RCDAV

CHRISTIAN MARCLAY × ECAL– PHOTOMATON,29.03–02.06.2024,Photo Elysée Artist Christian Marclay, invited to delve into the Photo Elysée collections in 2021, has explored the thousands of faces recorded by the museum s Photomaton. With him, ECAL s photography students have pored over, scanned and transformed the conserved prints. Four portraits taken by a machine and printed in a few minutes! This is the experience offered by the Photomaton since it was invented in 1924. It was an immediate success, especially with the proliferation of identity documents that require a portrait taken to specific standards. Very few people are unfamiliar with the experience of the Photomaton – the name of this photo booth installed in areas of high footfall. Automated, self-service, available 7 days a week, socially neutral, and above all less expensive than a portrait taken by a professional, and less intimidating too, this photographic process democratises the act of having a portrait taken, quickly, anywhere and at little cost. The ancestor of the Polaroid and the selfie, named after the words “photo” and “automaton”, this unmanned process, a veritable photographic automaton offering four unique prints, has often fascinated artists. A few years ago, Photo Elysée acquired an automated photo studio. Since then, the museum has been inviting members of the public to photograph themselves and, if they wish, leave their portraits to create a collective work of art. Multimedia artist Christian Marclay has explored thousands of faces recorded by the Photo Elysée Photomaton. With him, the students in the ECAL s Bachelor of Photography are making this archive their own through analogue and digital manipulations: collages, kinetic animations, scanning electron microscope and new forms of automation based on artificial intelligence.DATESDu 29 mars au 2 juin 2024ADDRESSPhoto Elysée Pl. de la Gare 17 1003 LausanneWEBSITEwww.elysee.chSTUDENTS, , , , , , , TEACHERASSISTANTS, Angèle Marignac-Serra, OPENING28.03.2024

Visual Identity During the visual identity course, the 1st year Graphic Design bachelors had to realize a communication project around a district where they live. FC Liaudet pial Graphic research When I moved into my neighborhood, I quickly got to know my neighbor: Liaudet Pial. Liaudet Pial SA is a plumbing company, a water purification company, a pipefitting company - in short, a company that does all sorts of things involving big, noisy trucks. After immersing myself in their world, I realized that the company had a soccer team playing in the Ligue Romande de Football. I then tried to imagine what this team s visual identity might look like, should it one day miraculously become excellent. by Temps qui passe Research & video This project explores the theme of the passage of time through a black-and-white edition. Illustrating an entire day, from 6:01 a.m. to 5:59 a.m. the following day, it plunges us into the heart of activity on Rue de la Gare. In parallel, a companion edition highlights an old Volkswagen van that has been parked on the street for years, creating a contrast between the constant movement of passers-by and the immobility of the vehicle. This project encourages us to reflect on the notion of time, movement and immutability in our daily urban lives. By Les nouvelles armoiries contheysannes Personalisation catalog The aim of this catalog is to give all residents of the village of Plan-Conthey the opportunity to design their own coat of arms. 6 stages of personalization are detailed, each one representing a category of motifs specific to the design of a coat of arms. By En construction Research & poster In this edition, a reinterpretation of a street under construction is presented. By imagining construction tools and an alternative outcome - innovative buildings - a new universe is explored through collages and future projections, offering a new perspective on urban visual identity. By real district Camo & research Real District is a visual identity project for the Route des Monts neighborhood in Le Locle. Because of the layout of the buildings and windows, as well as being one of the only young people in the area, I feel indiscreetly observed. So I developed a range of camouflage materials to blend in with the neighborhood s various settings. By Balade Research & video A project on the visual identity of a place that brings together different shots of the lakeside. A pleasant place, with a horizon full of subtlety. The landscape is reinterpreted using color palettes and simplified forms to lend a peaceful touch to the environment. At the same time, it adds a poetic touch to the editorial stroll. By

Gamepics An exhibition at the Olympic Museum by the students in Foundation Year – Photography option at ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne. Under the photographer s direction Nicolas Haeni, the students have explored the theme of the Olympic Games by immersing themselves in its diversity. Through photography and moving images, the young photographers offer a fresh and curious look at these disciplines, inviting us to look beyond mere performance to contemplate the beauty of detail hidden in each sport.

Beyond Bézier. Explorations of drawing methods in type design In the early age of digital type, several methods were explored to draw letterforms. One of them, the Bézier spline, an algorithm that generates curves with a small quantity of data, has the crucial advantage of sparing computer memory and processing resources. It is today the industry standard. This project aims to question and reevaluate it, to move beyond established trends, to develop innovative ideas by exploring alternative methods of drawing curves, and letterforms. Beyond Bézier is an investigation of the existing approaches to letter drawing. It is also the experimentation of new methods to draw and to create. As type designers and type educators, we have felt the past few years the dead-ends that vector drawing and contemporary software brings, generating more and more fonts that just look the same. By researching and experimenting with different approaches of drawing, our design pedagogy will be nourished by this experience and shared with a larger audience through a dedicated website. If the vector is the current frontier of type design, new perspectives will be opened if we overcome that frontier. According to the Israeli-American psychologist and Nobel Laureate Daniel Kahneman, thinking operates within two systems: ‘System 1 operates automatically and quickly, with little or no effort and no sense of voluntary control. System 2 allocates attention to the effortful mental activities that demand it, including complex computations. The operations of System 2 are often associated with the subjective experience of agency, choice, and concentration. 1 One could argue that designers are working within System 1, whereas good designers make a larger use of System 2. Fighting automatism is indeed an important aspect of creativity. When one works solely with vectors, only one System is at work. Drawing with different approaches can trigger new ideas and shapes, such as the physical limitations of your tools bring new forms.2 When vector drawing becomes automatic (by muscular memory of the designer, or software-induced choices), a whole area of creativity disappears. It may also be that the ability of switching between two systems improves creativity. This is comparable to Jean-François Billeter s hypothesis about how creativity functions: he compares it to a gear change when driving a car. The moment when tension is released between two different operating regimes is the moment of revelation, of creation.3 Another and very important aspect is the collaborative approach. Type design has long been – and still is – seen as a solitary practice, with the designers in their ivory tower. The approach of Beyond Bézier is collaborative. It shares materials and approaches. Beyond Bézier is a project that can nourish designers, design students, and those interested in the way humans can create. It opens the door to further development, such as a digital tool – software based neither on vectors, bitmaps, or parametric systems. The group works simultaneously on five different axes which map different methodologies of drawing type. Each researcher is in charge of coordinating an axis while contributing to other axes simultaneously. The five axes are: 1 The Stroke 2 The Surface 3 The Collective 4 The Robot 5 The Mathematics Axes 1 and 2 are questioning traditional ways of creating fonts, mostly looking at the tools and instruments used for the creation. 3 and 4 are rather looking at who designs, in which contexts, through collaboration and exchange. Axis 5 is transversal. References 1. KAHNEMAN 2011, Daniel Kahneman, Thinking, Fast and Slow, Farrar, Straus and Giroux, New York, 2011. 2. Par Chloé Vandewallefrom the mouth of the building This series of political posters deals with the Chinese government s ban on Feng shui beliefs. Today, figures of resistance continue to take shape, like the Bel Air skyscraper in Hong Kong, built with a hole in the middle to allow forbidden creatures to move from the sea to the mountains (printing techniques reveal the forbidden). TRANSLATION During the visual identity course, the 2nd year Graphic Design bachelors had to produce a communication project based on a translation. They had to define their own translation system and develop a visual language based on these rules. SOURCE BOOKThrough a selection of ten books that talk about books, the study looks at the representation of the publishing object. From its materiality, volume and image to its translation into the same medium. The questioning extends firstly to the relationship between dematerialised design on the screen and printed materiality, as well as the volume that the editorial object represents. Secondly, through a process of digitisation and photocopying, the project explores the aesthetic potential of the photocopying medium. The graphic design, influenced by the characteristics of this medium, is presented as a form of reading, transforming a collection of content into a superimposition of images. The integration of this content into two juxtaposed posters aims to reinterpret the book in the poster under a third layer. The book is then defined in a new way in the context in which it is displayed. Par Historia ItinerisHistoria Itineris translates physical museum space into virtual space, reinterpreting the "bugs" created by Google Street View and the codes of curation to delve into the thoughts of an exhibition by a fictional artist, Joseph Knecht. Par Collective Memory From social media profiles to forum posts, from digital transactions to website visits, our online presence leaves traces that all too often go unnoticed. What would happen if we could retrieve this data and translate it into an avatar? By diving into the depths of my digital history, I ve gathered together all the information I could find about myself online. Par RADIO49DRADIO49D is a free local radio station based in the town of Renens (Canton of Vaud, Switzerland), originally created for this visual identity project. It was launched in October 2023 at number 49D on the Rue de Lausanne. It broadcasts a wide variety of content freely (often illegally) over the available FM airwaves. Its callsign is HB4DI, but this is nothing more than a usurpation, as the radio s founder never declared its existence to the relevant authorities. RADIO49D transmits over a maximum radius of 100 metres using a Raspberry Pi 4 computer and a ten-centimetre wire. RADIO49D s programming is free and unpredictable, so it generates maps for communicative purposes that it broadcasts by radio to regular listeners using the SSTV (Slow-scan Television) technique. These cards are then translated into radio waves, then retranscribed into images after reception and re-translation. An album acting as a physical archive of RADIO49D has been produced as part of its visual identity. It provides a complete record of the cards sent and received between October 2023 and January 2024. Par Eiger Air Eiger Air is an upcoming event taking place on the slopes of Mount Eiger. You ll be able to see an air show put on by the Patrouille Suisse. The identity of the event focuses on the representation of the visual language of aviation, as well as the translation of the signals made by a "yellow dog" to communicate with the aircraft from the landing strip. Par Weather Report "Weather Report" explores the popular visual codes of weather presentation. Drawing on viewers familiarity with the patterns, motifs, typographic elements, gestures and staging of presenters, the project offers a graphic reinterpretation in a variety of media. These elements are then transposed onto various printed media such as posters and a calendar, but also in an animation designed to deconstruct and then reassemble these visual components. Par

Noli Oblivisci Book In this edition, I analyse the influence of time on the architecture of the Family House, which has been abandoned for many years. Exploring the intergenerational dimension at the heart of this temporal investigation, I have structured each aspect in terms of degrees, generational degrees. As the great-granddaughter of the house s last residents, I represent degree 2, while my father embodies degree 1. So, as we explored the house, we described it by sharing anecdotes and affinities specific to our respective degrees. The investigation thus evolved into a family dimension, going beyond its purely temporal nature. By Ruelle Thomas 21 Book Ruelle Thomas 21 is where my mum s bookshop used to be, on the ground floor of our family home, and which went bankrupt in 2015. Each room was dedicated to a particular audience: cookery books in the kitchen, children s books in the bedroom, and novels in the living room, for adults. The best way for me to express this was to use this separation of the flat to delimit the literary space of each person. I took my point of view as a child who didn t like to read, to experiment with and deconstruct the sequence imposed by literature, using my mum s literary criticism, book covers and a manifesto to make people feel less guilty. By Abri Anti Atomique Book Swiss atomic shelters are an architectural phenomenon that contrasts with the country s neutrality. This is why, when Switzerland publishes documents relating to war and the defence of its citizens, the tone used is very modest, even naïve, given the seriousness of the subjects covered. In the same way, the publication contrasts the seriousness of the subject of shelters with the spectacular beauty of the disasters that justify the use of shelters. By I never felt at home Video "I never felt at home" is about the feeling, the discomfort and the melancholy of never feeling at home, no matter where you live. The discomfort felt outside is brought into the intimacy of the home through projection. By ce qu il reste de la vérité Book Childhood, an ephemeral and singular stage, forms the basis of our identity. "Ce qu il reste de la vérité" is a narrative and personal exploration of childhood in care. The key idea is to present this nuanced experience, oscillating between fleeting happiness and complex issues, through a dual narrative: that of the child who, without really understanding the circumstances, undergoes them with innocence and dissociation; and that of the adult, whose more mature view offers a retrospective reflection on this singular period of life. By Manifeste Photométrique Book This research project involves a technical analysis of lighting interactions within a residential space, with particular emphasis on the mental health criteria engendered by lighting and the visual preferences of potential occupants. The aim of this analysis is to deconstruct the mechanisms and variables influencing interior lighting, architecture and the environment in order to create a synthesis between functionality and aesthetics. Cyanotype workshop A day-long workshop given by Aude Meyer de Stadelhofen to students in the Graphic Design option. The aim was to compose by hand using tracing paper on which were printed visuals previously produced by the students. The possibility of cutting, cropping, pasting and drawing allowed everyone to make the visuals their own and create original posters.

Redesign 23-24 - S1 As part of the course given by Giliane Cachin, 1st year students are required to produce an edition by examining the different axes that make it up. The course offers a study of various grid systems and the fundamentals of micro-typography. During the semester, students will look for the best way to structure and arrange the content they have chosen (or which has been assigned to them, depending on the semester s data). Some essential rules to know in terms of printing and bindings will be reviewed at the end of the semester, in order to bring the conceptualized object to life. The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with their 169 targets, form the core of the 2030 Agenda. They balance the economic, social and ecological dimensions of sustainable development, and place the fight against poverty and sustainable development on the same agenda for the first time. The SDGs are to be achieved around the world, and by all UN member states, by 2030. This means that all states are called upon equally to play their part in finding shared solutions to the world s urgent challenges. Switzerland is also required to implement the Goals on a national basis. In addition, incentives are to be created to encourage non-governmental actors to make an increasingly active contribution to sustainable development.MELTING POINTS Flyer / poster & website Melting Points is composed of a series of leaflets with the objective to warn and to make a statement about the environmental situation of the glaciers in Switzerland. Rather than communicating the urgency of the situation, we decided to evoke the mass disappearance of certain glaciers, thus accentuating a process that is already underway and partly irreversible. This printed dimension of the project serves as a bridge between an ephemeral physical object and a constantly evolving website. The latter is based on the analogy of the obituary, listing the disappeared, threatened and non-threatened glaciers while emphasizing the nostalgia and memory of these places. Thanks to this application you can evaluate the hate content of a website and modify its content accordingly. The goal of Rate Hate is to transform hate speech into a graphic visual in order to divert and criticize its content. By Achille Masson , Camille Spiller , Raphaël CarruzzoLAISSER DISPARAÎTRE OU FAIRE DISPARAÎTRE Edition, animated poster & VR short film Let it go or make it go exposes the conflicts of interest that oppose our desire to preserve the planet to our addiction to comfort. To act for the good of all or to protect our personal interests? In the "privileged" context inherent to Switzerland, eco-anxiety soars and paradoxically, comfort gradually reaches its peak. Feelings oscillate between guilt, denial or justification of acts that contribute to the deterioration of our Earth, of the links that unite us or of our values. Through interviews and surveys, the edition collects current concerns of subjects of various ages, for the great majority Swiss. They answer the questions: "What are you afraid to see disappear?" and "What comfort are you not ready to give up? Some systems of thought are developed in order to propose a varied panel of opinions. One of them is narrated by a voice-over and a succession of images in a poignant VR experience. Moving posters highlight various issues such as travel, overconsumption or importation. Capturing a world in corrosion, the project is to be understood as the testimony of a concerned society. By Marine Dang & Jamy Herrmann Hydro—Hegemony Website & edition Hydro—Hegemony is an editorial project which examines the political aspect of water. PRAXIS – EXHIBITION OF THE CITY OF RENENS 2023 ENCOURAGEMENT PRIZE,23.11–10.12.2023,La Ferme des Tilleuls, Renens From November 23 to December 10, Ferme des Tilleuls hosts "Praxis", an exhibition by Till Seegräber and Gabriela Jaime, winners of the City of Renens 2023 Encouragement Prize. The City of Renens 2023 Encouragement Prize was awarded to two ECAL students, (Bachelor Industrial Design) and (Master Type Design). In the wake of this encounter, they have created "Praxis", an innovative collection of design objects that evoke simplicity. In an increasingly multi-faceted world that adapts to our individual needs, this exhibition invites us to reflect on the essence of objects. In so doing, it offers a counterpoint to the complexification that prevails in the field of design. By breaking down the elements of our environment, the designers have arrived at refined building blocks that can be used to design a wide range of objects. Three ECAL graduates in artist residencies abroad Romane de Watteville, Gina Proenza and Baker Wardlaw, three ECAL graduates, have been awarded three Artist Residencies abroad by the Etat de Vaud The State of Vaud provides professional artists working in the canton with a studio in Paris and another in Berlin. Put out to tender each year, the artistic residencies are granted for a period of six months, and each comes with a contribution to expenses of 9,000 francs. For 2024, the Paris studio has been awarded to visual artists Romane de Watteville (1st semester) and Gina Proenza (2nd semester). The Berlin residency (2nd semester) goes to Baker Wardlaw. International artist residencies are an important means of supporting creativity and research. They encourage the development of projects with links to the two capitals concerned, and promote the influence of artists working in Vaud. To this end, the Canton of Vaud has a studio at the Cité internationale des arts in Paris, and (in collaboration with the Canton of Freiburg) a studio in the multicultural Wedding district in the heart of Berlin. Residence in Paris 1st semester 2024 - Graduated with a Bachelor s degree in Fine Arts in 2020, Romane de Watteville wishes to reside in the French capital to develop a pictorial project entitled "Picture of You Staring". Focusing on formal issues, this work is centered around the theme of set design in both theater and film, as well as costume design. The residency will foster exchange and close collaboration with other artists working in textiles, ceramics and installation. 2nd semester 2024 - During her stay in Paris, Gina Proenza, graduated with a Bachelor s degree in Fine Arts in 2017, will develop a project linked to the writings and documentary films (one of which is unfinished) produced by French poet Alain Gheerbrant following his travels in the Colombian Amazon during the second half of the 20th century. The artist plans to consult the archives of these journeys held at the Bibliothèque Nationale de France (BNF) to observe the relationship between colonial history and anthropology. Residence in Berlin 2nd semester 2024 - During his stay in Berlin, Baker Wardlaw, graduated with a Bachelor s degree in Fine Arts in 2014, will continue the conceptual and formal exploration of his work entitled "Berlin Key / Sacred Harp". Centered on the notions of cryptography and cooperation, the artist s approach aims to establish a parallel, or even a confrontation, between the messages sometimes cryptically conveyed by works of art and the complex digital encasement to which all human communication is almost necessarily subject these days. www.vd.ch
