ECAL AT LAUSANNE JARDINS,15.06–05.10.2024,Lausanne To mark Lausanne Jardins 2024, ECAL s Bachelor Industrial Design is presenting two projects designed to make the most of the shores of Lake Geneva. MIRADOR by Victoria Guffroy et Noé Chassot Mirador is a giant watery playground on the shore of Lake Geneva. Three stainless steel water cannons, arranged in a triangle, pump water from the lake and spray it over long distances, providing both fun and relief from the summer heat. Once the cannon is full, simply press the handle to propel the water in the desired direction. Fire away! PIERROT by Charlotte Dubois Pierrot—a homophone of the French words “pierre” (rock) and “eau” (water)—evokes two characteristic features of the shore of Lake Geneva. These rocky outcrops are punctuated by platforms of different sizes, small ones for crossing and large ones for relaxing on, allowing bathers to reach the lake while protecting the delicate and rare ecosystems that surround them. These platforms, constructed from wood and wire mesh filled with pebbles, hug the shape of the rocks and provide a new habitat for biodiversity to flourish. Here, the wire mesh—a popular architectural feature—holds large quantities of rocks, exploiting the weight, shape and other characteristics of this natural, locally available material.TEACHERVENUEPromenade de Vidy 7 1007 LausanneSTUDENTSMirador: Victoria Guffroy , Noé Chassot Pierrot: Charlotte DuboisDATES & SCHEDULE15.06-05.10.2024WEBSITElausannejardins.chPARTNERSMirador: Metal-System Diserens Sàrl Pierrot: Ateliers de menuiserie - Ville de Lausanne, Centre de formation C-FOR!
Service Design - 2024 During the Service Design course, the 3rd year of the Graphic Design, Photography and Media & Interaction Design bachelors had to create multi-media projects. A collaboration of the Visual Communication department which had as subject the SDGs (*Sustainable Development Goals). The theme was called "For a good cause, make the SDGs a reality" and its objective was to allow students to develop a cause that is close to their hearts. Each project consists of at least two different media, one primary and one secondary. These projects could take any form that the students deemed relevant, be it a website, editions, posters, a video sequence or virtual reality. The SDGs are meant to be achieved globally by all United Nations member states by 2030. This entails all states equally playing their part in seeking common solutions to the world s urgent challenges. Switzerland is also obligated to implement these goals at the national level. Furthermore, incentives must be created to encourage non-governmental actors to increasingly contribute to sustainable development. The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), along with their 169 targets, constitute the core of the Agenda 2030. They integrate the economic, social, and environmental dimensions of sustainable development and, for the first time, place poverty eradication and sustainable development on the same agenda.Your Email s Carbon Footprint Poster & Website This project comprises a website that explores various aspects of the carbon footprint of emails and the different ways in which they contribute to CO2 emissions. To make this information more accessible, the carbon footprint figures of emails are illustrated using concrete and familiar examples for the general public, such as kilometers driven by cars or the energy consumption of household appliances. In order to raise awareness among a broad audience, we have introduced a mascot named Bob, who serves as a guide through this information. Posters summarize the three main elements of the site: the CO2 emissions from emails, solutions to reduce this footprint, and an introduction to Bob. They encourage the public to visit the website to learn more. By , & SHIEn Website & Moving Poster Our project aims to raise awareness among 18-24 year olds about the social and environmental issues of ultra fast fashion, focusing specifically on the case of the giant SHEIN. The idea is to dissect each step of the ordering process by revealing behind-the-scenes aspects through an interactive experience that incorporates social media codes. By , & back to Newspaper & Video We have created a project aimed at promoting sustainable cosmetics. This project highlights the adoption of solid cosmetics in a zero waste approach. It raises awareness and informs about an effective and simple alternative, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing sustainable solutions that are respectful of both people and the environment. By , & Anthracite Edition & video Our project aims to raise awareness among the public about the dangers of light pollution for the survival of nocturnal insects and its impact on Swiss biodiversity. The edition combines scientific popularization with photographs illustrating the impact of light, blending the poetic with the alarming. The teaser immerses the viewer in a first-person perspective, experiencing life as an insect, to demonstrate the direct effects of this invasive light and to evoke empathy among the audience. Award-winning project at the USM Design Grant competition By , & 2030CHF Magazines & instagram We have launched a magazine called 2030CHF, with an annual publication every year until 2030. This magazine examines Switzerland from a new and impartial perspective, inviting everyone to ask themselves: "Will we achieve our goals by 2030?" By , & Tue la·e consomateur·ice en toi ! Fanzine & Website We have created a fanzine and a website to inform about the capitalist logic of over-responsibilizing individuals. This project aims to provide keys to understanding the consumer condition and to encourage breaking this status by becoming agents of change, disseminating content, and taking action. By , & ECOVILLE Video game & Website The project ECOVILLE takes the form of a downloadable computer video game. Interactive and fun, it is designed to raise awareness among the younger generation about the importance of preserving urban flora and fauna. The main objective is to provide children with simple ecological solutions that they can easily implement. By sharing their newfound knowledge with their parents, children become ambassadors for environmental conservation. The game also helps to develop their autonomy and critical thinking through its various stages and challenges. By , & bits & peels Book & instagram The project consists of an educational edition in the form of a cookbook, inspired by grandmother s recipes, highlighting various foods, their types, and different ways to transform their waste. These transformation methods are categorized into several categories: cosmetics, maintenance, cooking, and gardening. The edition is accompanied by Instagram posts focused on seasonal fruits and vegetables, offering tips for effectively recycling these foods. By , &
REMIND ME I M ALIVE REMIND ME I M ALIVE is a companion that combines the functions of a fidget toy with those of a personal reminder. The gadget uses information on Wifi connections in its immediate vicinity to better understand the user s environment. By examining these connections - the only gateway to the outside world - the gadget can tell whether the user is in a busy or quiet environment, and even give indications of possible stressful situations. When the user is not interacting with the device, it constantly monitors his or her status via the surrounding wifi connections. These connections provide implicit information on social conditions, working environments, infrastructures and much more. If the user does not communicate with the companion for more than six hours, it “dies” and must be resuscitated. This feature underlines the need for regular interaction and ensures that the companion is always ready for use.

In the first season, with the complicity of Claude Emmanuelle Gajan Maull, the young photographers have fluidified the iconic bottles with their gendered silhouettes — Le Mâle, Le Classique, Le Beau and La Belle — in a fresh LGBTQIA+ perspective. With this upcoming season, the project evolves around the Scandal fragrance, with the creation of still lives in which the liquid, dry and organic contrasting textures evoke the essence of the perfume, its bottle design and its complexities. Through staging, the perfumes become the backdrop for stories of transgression and fantastical projections. Under Your Smell offers a hypnotic and immersive experience through monumental fabric prints all around the exhibition areas. Giant image-cushions welcome the public to lay down and celebrate gender fluidity and the ever changing definitions of beauty and self expression.RELATED EVENTS
ECAL x FREITAG - Access over ownership Second-year industrial design students collaborated with Zurich-based brand FREITAG Lab, leveraging their expertise in environmental awareness, material upcycling, and the circular economy. Using the FREITAG manifesto as a foundation, they developed new shared products centered on the principle of "access over ownership." Under the direction of designer Christophe Guberan, students have explored various options for borrowable items. Particularly relevant for temporary-use clothing, accessories, and furniture, this approach enabled the young designers to benefit from FREITAG s expertise in circular economy, material upcycling, services, product development and disruptive innovation. “Design has the responsibility and power to make positive changes towards a circular future. We shared our know-how with the students to raise their awareness of this vision”, says FREITAG Circle Lead Product Design and Development Tu Van Giang. Seeking to fundamentally alter the consumer experience through product design itself, ECAL and FREITAG invite consumers to rethink their relationship with goods while adopting a more sustainable and conscious lifestyle.NEBULA by Disposable plastic ponchos are often used by tourists as a quick fix to stay warm and dry while travelling, but they are as quickly worn out as they are quickly discarded. Made from reclaimed B-grade car airbag textile, NEBULA is designed to replace single-use plastic ponchos. Designed to be as simple as possible to produce, one size fits all and easy to clean and maintain, without compromising on quality and comfort. The ponchos would be borrowed and returned to FREITAG stores, but could also be returned to hotels or mailboxes for convenient retrieval while travelling. Pairs stylishly with the FLAT BOOTS overshoes. FLAT BOOTS by , Most of us own rain boots that we only use a few days a year, according to the weather. FLAT BOOTS are waterproof overshoes that you can borrow for as long as you need them for those rainy days, outdoor activities, or if you ve forgotten your boots when you re on the road. The overshoe features a thermo-welded heavy-duty tarp upper and a rubber sole. Its unique split sole design allows the boots to be rolled up for easy storage and optimised production. Combined with the NEBULA poncho, they would keep you dry while you re out and about. PACK-A-ROOM by , & Thought for students who are most likely to move from one flat to another, study abroad for a semester or have an extra flatmate for a few months, PACK-A-ROOM is a collection of flatpack furniture that is easy to transport and assemble. Made from B-grade airbag and tarp, fitted on a frame made of standard pipes and robust Maker Pipe connectors; the use of modular and detachable connecting parts allows for durable, expandable systems and extends the life cycle of the furniture. Comprising a bed, wardrobe and chair, you would have everything you need to feel at home in just a few turns of hex key. FIESTA KIT by It s party time! You go to the corner shop to buy everything you need: disposable plates, disposable glasses, disposable napkins and, of course, decorations, garlands and disposable balloons, all of which will be thrown away at the end of the day. The FIESTA KIT offers an alternative to disposable garlands and balloons. Made from truck tarp off-cuts from FREITAG bag production, rolled up in a handy pouch, it is a unique and colourful decoration option for celebrating more consciously. F-BÖÖTLE by In Switzerland, river drifting is a popular activity for groups of friends and families. As soon as the temperatures rise, everyone grabs their paddles and pumps and drifts down the river in brightly-coloured rubber boats. Unfortunately, many of these inflatable boats are abandoned on the banks, sometimes after just one use. The problem has become so serious that some towns, like Bern, have taken action by installing massive permanent containers to help maintain the shores of the Aare river. The inflatable F-BÖÖTLE, made from a tractor inner tube combined with truck tarp and safety belts, offers a sustainable alternative for this summertime water adventure. Designed to be easily inflated and deflated, it can be effortlessly rolled up into a backpack for convenient carrying. AIRtube by Translating FREITAG s bag-making expertise to the furniture industry is perhaps a bit of a stretch. Applying its radical principles to furniture rental, however, makes perfect sense. AIRTUBE is an inflatable sofa system made from dead-stock tractor inner tubes and seatbelt webbing. One section of the sofa is made up of four inner tubes constrained and shaped by straps. Each element can accommodate two people and could be easily transported from a FREITAG store to wherever you need it. AIRTUBE is a sturdy, playful and comfy option for events, parties, indoors or out on a sunny day relaxing in a park. shift by When we move from one home to another, we consume a lot of items in a short space of time — cardboard boxes, bags, all sorts of tapes, bubble wrap, etc. — most of which end up in the rubbish or, at best, in a recycling bin. SHIFT is a reusable moving kit made up of a series of sturdy, box-shaped tarp bags ranging in size from 43L, 62L and 82L, plus a long, thin bag for all bulky items. You could borrow as many bags as you need from your local FREITAG store, for a carefree move.

“The Eskimo in the Mojave Desert”: Herbert Matter, a Designer Across Scenes and Genres Matter s career was that of a multidisciplinary, international designer working across commerce and culture. He was not only a graphic artist but also a photographer, type designer, art director, teacher and film-maker. His work in the field of advertising and editorial design, his collaborations with artists, his self-commissioned work, his photography and film outputs and his long-serving position as an educator provide as many entry points to analyse the impact of migration and an international network on a graphic designer s career. It also provides a case study to analyse the professional model of the designer working as photographer and layout artist simultaneously. The historiography on the Swiss graphic designer and photographer Herbert Matter (1907–1984) is characterised by a dichotomy. On the one hand, his oeuvre is partially well-known; some of his works are regarded as amongst “the most celebrated posters in design history” and have been published so widely that they make him a canonical figure of the highest degree. On the other hand, scholarship on his career is often shallow, repetitive and limited to the recurrent reproductions of a few selected artefacts. As is often the case with the canon, Matter s high visibility does not translate into a refined understanding of his work. Scholarship fails to contextualise him as a multifaceted graphic designer, photographer, and film-maker whose career did not fit within a specific style or movement, but reflected influences ranging from French poster artists, Swiss modernism and American pop culture. His profile was so unusual that the American graphic designer Paul Rand, who was active in corporate identity and branding, quipped: “I have always had the feeling that H[erbert] M[atter] on Madison Avenue was like an Eskimo in the Mohavi [sic] desert”, that is an out-of-place character in the world of New York advertising. The present project therefore provides a more nuanced discourse on Matter s career by relating his visual work to his influences and his migration between the three scenes in which he was active: Switzerland, France and the United States. It answers the following question: How did Herbert Matter s migration, transnational experiences and network shape his approach to graphic design?ApplicantsDr Jonas Berthod Prof. Gilles GavilletResearch teamDr Jonas Berthod (ECAL) Prof. Louise Paradis (Université du Québec à Montréal UQAM) Prof. Gilles Gavillet (ECAL)Period1.12.2023 – 31.1.2025Supported byHES-SO, Réseau de Compétences Design et Arts Visuels RCDAV
Unpacking Tschichold s Library at KASK,28.03–21.04.2024,KASK & Conservatorium, Belgium Unpacking Tschichold s Library" exhibition at KASK & Conservatorium Jan Tschichold s Die neue Typografie (1928) served as a central reference in the discourse on modernist design. Nearly a century after its publication, the book holds a mythical status, often considered self-evident and rarely critically examined. The exhibition reevaluates the legacy of the new typography by literally unpacking Tschichold s library. In the exhibition, you can browse through almost all 120 sources cited in the essay, with high-quality facsimiles alongside rare originals. As an annex to the exhibition, the Belgian Institute for Graphic Design (BINGO) provides a contemporary and local response to Tschichold, developed in collaboration with Kunstenbibliotheek and the graphic design students of KASK & Conservatorium. This travelling exhibition is a research project of ECAL / University of Art and Design Lausanne (HES-SO), curated by Davide Fornari. Beyond Bézier. Explorations of drawing methods in type design In the early age of digital type, several methods were explored to draw letterforms. One of them, the Bézier spline, an algorithm that generates curves with a small quantity of data, has the crucial advantage of sparing computer memory and processing resources. It is today the industry standard. This project aims to question and reevaluate it, to move beyond established trends, to develop innovative ideas by exploring alternative methods of drawing curves, and letterforms. Beyond Bézier is an investigation of the existing approaches to letter drawing. It is also the experimentation of new methods to draw and to create. As type designers and type educators, we have felt the past few years the dead-ends that vector drawing and contemporary software brings, generating more and more fonts that just look the same. By researching and experimenting with different approaches of drawing, our design pedagogy will be nourished by this experience and shared with a larger audience through a dedicated website. If the vector is the current frontier of type design, new perspectives will be opened if we overcome that frontier. According to the Israeli-American psychologist and Nobel Laureate Daniel Kahneman, thinking operates within two systems: ‘System 1 operates automatically and quickly, with little or no effort and no sense of voluntary control. System 2 allocates attention to the effortful mental activities that demand it, including complex computations. The operations of System 2 are often associated with the subjective experience of agency, choice, and concentration. 1 One could argue that designers are working within System 1, whereas good designers make a larger use of System 2. Fighting automatism is indeed an important aspect of creativity. When one works solely with vectors, only one System is at work. Drawing with different approaches can trigger new ideas and shapes, such as the physical limitations of your tools bring new forms.2 When vector drawing becomes automatic (by muscular memory of the designer, or software-induced choices), a whole area of creativity disappears. It may also be that the ability of switching between two systems improves creativity. This is comparable to Jean-François Billeter s hypothesis about how creativity functions: he compares it to a gear change when driving a car. The moment when tension is released between two different operating regimes is the moment of revelation, of creation.3 Another and very important aspect is the collaborative approach. Type design has long been – and still is – seen as a solitary practice, with the designers in their ivory tower. The approach of Beyond Bézier is collaborative. It shares materials and approaches. Beyond Bézier is a project that can nourish designers, design students, and those interested in the way humans can create. It opens the door to further development, such as a digital tool – software based neither on vectors, bitmaps, or parametric systems. The group works simultaneously on five different axes which map different methodologies of drawing type. Each researcher is in charge of coordinating an axis while contributing to other axes simultaneously. The five axes are: 1 The Stroke 2 The Surface 3 The Collective 4 The Robot 5 The Mathematics Axes 1 and 2 are questioning traditional ways of creating fonts, mostly looking at the tools and instruments used for the creation. 3 and 4 are rather looking at who designs, in which contexts, through collaboration and exchange. Axis 5 is transversal. References 1. KAHNEMAN 2011, Daniel Kahneman, Thinking, Fast and Slow, Farrar, Straus and Giroux, New York, 2011. 2. Le livre d artiste - 23/24 As part of the publishing course led by Anouk Schneider and Chi-Long Trieu, 2nd year Visual Communication students had the opportunity to design an artist s book during the first semester. This book project stands out for its contemporary approach aimed at creating an editorial object that harmoniously integrates form and content in the current context of the editorial landscape. Students were encouraged to exploit their artistic freedom at all levels of creation, whether in terms of format, choice of paper, binding, layout, illustrations, text or typography. As part of this course, the artist s book can take shape through various illustration modalities, such as photography, reproduction, contextualization, drawing, 3D, etc. The emphasis is on the author s artistic vision and the means implemented to realize it. Students take on multiple roles as editor, curator and architect, covering the responsibilities of artistic director, designer, photographer, stylist, illustrator, typographer, editor-in-chief, and editorial secretary. This course highlights contemporary editorial design by exploring the narrative potential of a sequence of controlled content. The Manufacture of Type for Typewriters in Switzerland Between the 1940s and the 1990s, three companies manufactured type components for typewriters in Switzerland: Caractères SA, Setag and Novatype. During more than fifty years, they supplied the biggest manufacturers of office machines in Europe and around the world, such as IBM, Remington, Olivetti, Paillard-Hermès or Triumph-Adler. Having held a leading position worldwide, the three manufacturers played a key role in the design, development, and production of type components and typefaces for typewriters, as well as for all kinds of impact printers. By looking in details at their production methods, the research observes what influence did the manufacturing processes and the mechanical characteristics of the typewriter have on the design of the typefaces. Additionally, it takes interest into the surprising role played by the criminal police. Specialized in the dating and identification of typewriter typefaces for judicial and criminal purposes, forensic experts developed over the years specific methods and compiled rich documentations on typewriter typefaces. Being in direct contact with the type manufacturers to gain first-hand information, they even interfered in the design of some lettershapes. Based on oral history and archival research, this project aims to shed light on this little-known part of the industrial and typographic history.Main applicantSophie Wietlisbach, researcherResearch teamDavide Fornari, scientific supervisor Roland Früh, scientific supervisorPeriod01.01.2023–31.12.2024Supported byECAL / University of Art and Design, internal research grant DNP Foundation for Cultural Promotion, DNP Graphic Culture Research Grant
TRANSLATION – 2024 During the visual identity course, the 2nd year Graphic Design bachelors had to produce a communication project based on a translation. They had to define their own translation system and develop a visual language based on these rules. SOURCE BOOKThrough a selection of ten books that talk about books, the study looks at the representation of the publishing object. From its materiality, volume and image to its translation into the same medium. The questioning extends firstly to the relationship between dematerialised design on the screen and printed materiality, as well as the volume that the editorial object represents. Secondly, through a process of digitisation and photocopying, the project explores the aesthetic potential of the photocopying medium. The graphic design, influenced by the characteristics of this medium, is presented as a form of reading, transforming a collection of content into a superimposition of images. The integration of this content into two juxtaposed posters aims to reinterpret the book in the poster under a third layer. The book is then defined in a new way in the context in which it is displayed. Par Historia ItinerisHistoria Itineris translates physical museum space into virtual space, reinterpreting the "bugs" created by Google Street View and the codes of curation to delve into the thoughts of an exhibition by a fictional artist, Joseph Knecht. Par Collective Memory From social media profiles to forum posts, from digital transactions to website visits, our online presence leaves traces that all too often go unnoticed. What would happen if we could retrieve this data and translate it into an avatar? By diving into the depths of my digital history, I ve gathered together all the information I could find about myself online. Par RADIO49DRADIO49D is a free local radio station based in the town of Renens (Canton of Vaud, Switzerland), originally created for this visual identity project. It was launched in October 2023 at number 49D on the Rue de Lausanne. It broadcasts a wide variety of content freely (often illegally) over the available FM airwaves. Its callsign is HB4DI, but this is nothing more than a usurpation, as the radio s founder never declared its existence to the relevant authorities. RADIO49D transmits over a maximum radius of 100 metres using a Raspberry Pi 4 computer and a ten-centimetre wire. RADIO49D s programming is free and unpredictable, so it generates maps for communicative purposes that it broadcasts by radio to regular listeners using the SSTV (Slow-scan Television) technique. These cards are then translated into radio waves, then retranscribed into images after reception and re-translation. An album acting as a physical archive of RADIO49D has been produced as part of its visual identity. It provides a complete record of the cards sent and received between October 2023 and January 2024. Par Eiger Air Eiger Air is an upcoming event taking place on the slopes of Mount Eiger. You ll be able to see an air show put on by the Patrouille Suisse. The identity of the event focuses on the representation of the visual language of aviation, as well as the translation of the signals made by a "yellow dog" to communicate with the aircraft from the landing strip. Par Weather Report "Weather Report" explores the popular visual codes of weather presentation. Drawing on viewers familiarity with the patterns, motifs, typographic elements, gestures and staging of presenters, the project offers a graphic reinterpretation in a variety of media. These elements are then transposed onto various printed media such as posters and a calendar, but also in an animation designed to deconstruct and then reassemble these visual components. Par

ECAL LECTURE – El Pampero Cine,24.01.2024,Leenaards Auditorium, ECAL More than just a production company, El Pampero Cine was born in 2002 from the desire of a group of people to experiment and renew the procedures and practices of Argentine cinema. In conference at the ECAL, Wednesday 13 October 2024 at 6.00pm. Part of the formidable revival known as the "New Argentine Cinema", the collective produced films of international renown, such as La Flor (2018), Castro (2009) and Trenque Lauquen (2022), always with a radical economic approach. El Pampero Cine s influence is not confined to aesthetics: its revolution affects above all forms of production and exhibition. Since Balnearios, in 2002, El Pampero Cine has developed a production system based on radical independence from conventional funding sources, which has enabled them to produce consistently fertile output. Historias Extraordinarias confirms that El Pampero Cine has imposed a new way of producing in Argentina, working with budgets that are significantly lower than the smallest industrial productions, without this inferiority of conditions having anything to do with the technical or aesthetic quality of the works. El Pampero Cine is made up of Mariano Llinás, Laura Citarella, Agustín Mendilaharzu and Alejo Moguilansky, Argentine directors, editors, writers and producers. So, how can we live better? – 2024 Beyond questions of functionality, comfort and individual or collective well-being, the built environment is capable of responding in a stimulating way to societal, energy and environmental challenges. Workplaces, homes, public spaces, interiors and streets are all driven by real statements of intent that motivate their design. The 2nd year Graphic Design students worked on a communication based on one of these principles (or others) and on the architectural creation that refers to it in order to promote it. Noli Oblivisci Book In this edition, I analyse the influence of time on the architecture of the Family House, which has been abandoned for many years. Exploring the intergenerational dimension at the heart of this temporal investigation, I have structured each aspect in terms of degrees, generational degrees. As the great-granddaughter of the house s last residents, I represent degree 2, while my father embodies degree 1. So, as we explored the house, we described it by sharing anecdotes and affinities specific to our respective degrees. The investigation thus evolved into a family dimension, going beyond its purely temporal nature. By Ruelle Thomas 21 Book Ruelle Thomas 21 is where my mum s bookshop used to be, on the ground floor of our family home, and which went bankrupt in 2015. Each room was dedicated to a particular audience: cookery books in the kitchen, children s books in the bedroom, and novels in the living room, for adults. The best way for me to express this was to use this separation of the flat to delimit the literary space of each person. I took my point of view as a child who didn t like to read, to experiment with and deconstruct the sequence imposed by literature, using my mum s literary criticism, book covers and a manifesto to make people feel less guilty. By Abri Anti Atomique Book Swiss atomic shelters are an architectural phenomenon that contrasts with the country s neutrality. This is why, when Switzerland publishes documents relating to war and the defence of its citizens, the tone used is very modest, even naïve, given the seriousness of the subjects covered. In the same way, the publication contrasts the seriousness of the subject of shelters with the spectacular beauty of the disasters that justify the use of shelters. By I never felt at home Video "I never felt at home" is about the feeling, the discomfort and the melancholy of never feeling at home, no matter where you live. The discomfort felt outside is brought into the intimacy of the home through projection. By ce qu il reste de la vérité Book Childhood, an ephemeral and singular stage, forms the basis of our identity. "Ce qu il reste de la vérité" is a narrative and personal exploration of childhood in care. The key idea is to present this nuanced experience, oscillating between fleeting happiness and complex issues, through a dual narrative: that of the child who, without really understanding the circumstances, undergoes them with innocence and dissociation; and that of the adult, whose more mature view offers a retrospective reflection on this singular period of life. By Manifeste Photométrique Book This research project involves a technical analysis of lighting interactions within a residential space, with particular emphasis on the mental health criteria engendered by lighting and the visual preferences of potential occupants. The aim of this analysis is to deconstruct the mechanisms and variables influencing interior lighting, architecture and the environment in order to create a synthesis between functionality and aesthetics. Redesign 23-24 - S1 As part of the course given by Giliane Cachin, 1st year students are required to produce an edition by examining the different axes that make it up. The course offers a study of various grid systems and the fundamentals of micro-typography. During the semester, students will look for the best way to structure and arrange the content they have chosen (or which has been assigned to them, depending on the semester s data). Some essential rules to know in terms of printing and bindings will be reviewed at the end of the semester, in order to bring the conceptualized object to life. The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with their 169 targets, form the core of the 2030 Agenda. They balance the economic, social and ecological dimensions of sustainable development, and place the fight against poverty and sustainable development on the same agenda for the first time. The SDGs are to be achieved around the world, and by all UN member states, by 2030. This means that all states are called upon equally to play their part in finding shared solutions to the world s urgent challenges. Switzerland is also required to implement the Goals on a national basis. In addition, incentives are to be created to encourage non-governmental actors to make an increasingly active contribution to sustainable development.MELTING POINTS Flyer / poster & website Melting Points is composed of a series of leaflets with the objective to warn and to make a statement about the environmental situation of the glaciers in Switzerland. Rather than communicating the urgency of the situation, we decided to evoke the mass disappearance of certain glaciers, thus accentuating a process that is already underway and partly irreversible. This printed dimension of the project serves as a bridge between an ephemeral physical object and a constantly evolving website. The latter is based on the analogy of the obituary, listing the disappeared, threatened and non-threatened glaciers while emphasizing the nostalgia and memory of these places. To act for the good of all or to protect our personal interests? In the "privileged" context inherent to Switzerland, eco-anxiety soars and paradoxically, comfort gradually reaches its peak. Feelings oscillate between guilt, denial or justification of acts that contribute to the deterioration of our Earth, of the links that unite us or of our values. Through interviews and surveys, the edition collects current concerns of subjects of various ages, for the great majority Swiss. They answer the questions: "What are you afraid to see disappear?" and "What comfort are you not ready to give up? Some systems of thought are developed in order to propose a varied panel of opinions. One of them is narrated by a voice-over and a succession of images in a poignant VR experience. Moving posters highlight various issues such as travel, overconsumption or importation. Capturing a world in corrosion, the project is to be understood as the testimony of a concerned society. Anthracite The Anthracite project aims to raise public awareness about the dangers of light pollution, which threatens the survival of nocturnal insects and impacts biodiversity in Switzerland. Through a carefully crafted edition blending scientific outreach and photography, the project strikes a delicate balance between poetry and urgency. Anthracite also takes shape in two additional formats: a visual installation made up of striking images, and a teaser video. These mediums of awareness immerse the audience by adopting the perspective of an insect, inviting viewers to directly experience the effects of human-caused pollution. Ultimately, the project seeks to inspire greater protection for the vulnerable insects at risk.

The Cultural Turn in Swiss Graphic Design from the 1980s to – 2020 The research project investigates the discourse on graphic design in Switzerland in the under-researched period from 1980 to 2020. While the 1950s and 1960s saw graphic design in Switzerland reach international recognition and commercial expansion under the label “Swiss style”, a paradigm shift emerged in the following decades. The attention of many practitioners turned away from design as a pure service for the industrial and service sector and moved towards cultural commissions on a local, national and international level. Instead of aiming for maximum return, they chose their commissions according to whether they promised them creative freedom and whether they contributed to the profiling of their portfolio in alignment with their new definition of the profession as a lifestyle. This project examines the emergence and the development of this phenomenon, which became known as “cultural graphic design”, in professional graphic design in Switzerland. Main applicantProf. Dr Davide Fornari (ECAL/HES-SO) Prof. Robert Lzicar (Hochschule der Künste Bern HKB)Research teamDr Chiara Barbieri Dr Jonas Berthod Miriam KobanPeriod01.03.2023 – 28.02.2027Supported bySNSF Swiss National Science FoundationDisseminationWebsite cultural-turn-in-design.ch Conference For the Sake of Creative Freedom: Graphic Design for the Cultural Sector, 1 December 2023, HKB/Hochschule der Künste BernThe project identifies three stages in this cultural turn: the emergence of new values, followed by the development of a discourse on cultural design, and later its institutionalisation in federal policy. Accordingly, it is divided into three case studies bookended with symbolic socio-cultural, political and institutional turning points. The first case study starts with the 1980 riots, which took place in several Swiss cities. These socio-cultural upheavals were accompanied by an explosive increase in alternative cultural venues and outlets, which provided new working environments and fields of activity for visual designers. This case study focuses on the emergence of new professional values, summarised as “cultural graphic design”, and ends with the institutionalisation of alternative cultural centres at the end of the decade. The second case study explores the articulation and mediation of the discourse surrounding this practice. From the 1990s, designers created objects, organised exhibitions, wrote books and published articles promoting and negotiating their new position. This output contributed to the establishment of a discourse on “cultural graphic design” in Switzerland. The case study begins in 1993 with the publication of a polemic article that criticised the state of commercial Swiss graphic design while praising the arrival of a new generation of designer-authors active in culture. It ends in 2000 with the publication of two books that not only cemented the phenomenon of “cultural graphic design” in Switzerland but also made it known beyond its borders by promoting these new practices. Finally, the third case study analyses how “cultural design” transitioned from vanguard to mainstream. This period saw the canonisation of “cultural design”, which was adopted by an increasing number of graphic designers. It also witnessed a political institutionalisation, as evidenced in the reforms of federal design prizes such as the Most Beautiful Swiss Books in 1997 and the Swiss Design Awards in 2002. The case study ends with the period covered by the Kulturbotschaft 2016–2020, which defined the federal strategy for cultural policy and, for the first time, inscribed the support of design within the remit of action of the State. Drawing on recent findings, this project traces the development of design in Switzerland with a focus on transregional relations. The case studies share a common methodology of triangulating network analysis, oral history and the discourse analysis of visual and textual material to create comparative readings of the last decades developments in design and stimulate a discourse on its current status. As a whole, it sheds light on under-researched areas of design history while replacing them within the wider socio-cultural context.
