ECAL × JEAN PAUL GAULTIER: SPORT - CORPS SPORT - CORPS : Jeux Olympiques et Paralympiques The project is based on the theme of the body, with a view to staging physical effort. The recent context of the Olympic and Paralympic Games logically frames the choice of sport as an aesthetic means of highlighting different forms of bodily expression. The choice of discipline could be classic, out-of-games or even imaginary. The students worked around a certain vision of physical effort, movement, constraint, a form of discipline, or even joy.

Angeline Rossetti – Women Equity in Sport Women Equity in Sport is a campaign dedicated to the promotion and visibility of women s sport. Although the participation of women in sports federations is increasing, media coverage remains insufficient. This project aims to fill this lack of visibility by creating specialized newspapers for each sporting discipline. Distributed during sporting events, these newspapers will provide information on current issues in women s sport, based on concrete facts and inspiring slogans in order to sensitize and encourage collective awareness. In addition, video reports will offer a dynamic perspective, highlighting the action on the pitch and giving a strong voice to sportswomen, thus helping to change mentalities and promote equality in sport.

Visual Identity BA3 S1 2024-2025 Through the prism of visual identity, this project addresses issues of graphic language and artistic direction. Each stage of the project examines an aspect of the development of a visual identity: research, concept, visual language, design and communication. RADIONModular visual identity designed for the RADION club in Amsterdam. Designed to be both recognisable and impactful, it adapts to all formats and uses in order to meet the needs of a nightclub in a highly competitive environment. HS UHT USTThis project explores a potential overhaul of the Swiss Shooting Federation s visual identity in order to place it in a more contemporary and rigorous context. By moving away from the traditional clichés associated with shooting sports, this new identity aims to reposition the federation by emphasising excellence, precision and modernity in order to appeal to a new audience. La jetée In 1962, French filmmaker Chris Marker released La Jetée. It was an experimental film made up of hundreds of 35 mm black and white shots. It tells the story of a journey through time in a distorted post-apocalyptic Paris. The visual identity is based on an original typography designed to pay homage to Marker s raw material and its French context, and transcribes the idea of sequencing and light projection. It evolves through a teaser for a screening of La Jetée and a booklet containing the entire film script. ICONOHow do you talk to images? Should exhibition images be shown or not? Collages, appropriationists, the whole world up to the present day, a constellation of images... Since the beginning of the 20th century, iconographic artists have been appropriating images produced on an industrial scale. The images of these same artists form the name of the fictitious exhibition ICONO. By re-appropriating them, identity uses their codes to communicate. ApneaNumbers are omnipresent in the world of freediving, whether measuring depth or the duration of an immersion. This visual identity is based on a variable typography with two axes, each representing one of these parameters. Duration is illustrated by the change in the fat of the counter-forms, symbolising how full the diver s lungs are. Depth is represented by the thickness of the contours, evoking the gradation of colours that darken with immersion. The animation of these variables creates a breathing effect, echoing the rhythm of apnea. Orpheum TheaterNow abandoned, the Orpheum Theater in New Bedford, USA, had its heyday at the beginning of the XXᵉ century. To illustrate its transition from 6ᵉ to 7ᵉ art, the identity of this film library traces the three major periods that marked this venue. It combines neoclassical ornamentation, as reinterpreted in the Art Deco era, with a typographic structure inspired by flyers from the golden age of theatre. The whole is geometrically

Simon Maurer – Riposta FC Football is the most popular and publicized sport in the world, which gives it the opportunity to be more than just a game. Thanks in part to its popularity, it is used as a promotional medium, a forum, a means of communication. Both by players, fans, institutions, politicians etc. Riposta FC aims to question the place of football in society, its social role and how it could be used differently to serve other purposes than those already existing. The jerseys are second-hand garments with thermo-glued designs inspired and remixed visuals inherent in the world of football with the aim of creating a new interaction.

Carla Corminboeuf – Omerta A performance in a square of light, a surface echoing the competition carpet. A melancholy memory of a carpet that no longer exists, a carpet symbolizing constraints. The body enters this restricted space and measures it to the tempo of a metronome. Repetitive movements follow, until the effort is felt. A live projection is added in the background, produced with two cameras placed in the diagonals of the square, reproducing the jurors point of view. Video archives footage of training scenes then scrolls past, showing a body forced into contortions by relentless trainers. It s a questioning several aspects of rhythmic gymnastics, a sport I practiced for years, and whose training methods are being questioned by the medical world.

Diego Eiholzer – Hidry Access to water at outdoor events is often a challenge. Hydri is a water station designed to provide a drinking and refreshment spot during festivals, sports events, and institutional gatherings. This innovative unit is built to resemble a standard barrier, making it virtually indestructible and seamlessly integrating into existing barrier rental logistics, ensuring an affordable rental price. Water flows through durable stainless steel pipes and is dispensed in two ways: a linear jet for hand washing, drinking, and filling water bottles, and a directional jet for all other needs.

Jeffrey Krieger – PODIUM PODIUM is a project that ties skateboarding with space design. Primarily aimed at schools and sports centers, it consists of five modules that, thanks to their simple geometry, can be assembled in various configurations in a playground or sports field. Whether used for skateboarding or bleachers, these modules can be easily moved and rearranged due to a wheeled system that allows for autonomy and encourages user creativity.

Esther Alcade – Arrel Every year, 300 million shoes are discarded, with manufacturing producing 313 million tons of CO2 due to petroleum-derived materials. The Arrel project aims to extend the life of sports shoes by repurposing soles after 1000 km of use. Based in Mallorca, known for its basket weaving and shoemaking traditions, Arrel preserves artisanal knowledge and uses natural materials like palm fibers and esparto grass, also Arrel s new soles use biomaterials to reduce environmental impact. The project preserves Mallorca s cultural heritage by creating more durable shoes and reducing the ecological footprint.

Gilian Cardaci – Pitch Green This work documents the issues surrounding a professional football field and its artificial maintenance. The turf on these pitches must be maintained to comply with the high standards dictated by FIFA to enhance the image of the sport. Specific tools have been developed to meet this demand. Pitch Green turns football on its head with a fascination for what goes on behind the scenes, creating an imagery reminiscent of science fiction. The contrast between the natural turf and these ultra-technological tools lends an absurd edge to their real purpose. These pitches, which appear perfect to the viewer, reveal the excesses of football and its corrupt business.

VAUD-O-RAMA – JEUX OLYMPIQUES PARIS 2024 As part of the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the canton of Vaud has commissioned ECAL to create an original work of art, on view from July 24 to September 8 in the Maison suisse set up for the occasion in the courtyard of the Swiss Embassy in Paris. So, how can we live better? Beyond questions of functionality, comfort and individual or collective well-being, the built environment is capable of responding in a stimulating way to societal, energy and environmental challenges. Workplaces, homes, public spaces, interiors and streets are all driven by real statements of intent that motivate their design. The 2nd year Graphic Design students worked on a communication based on one of these principles (or others) and on the architectural creation that refers to it in order to promote it. Ailleurs Ici Édition Ailleurs Ici is the story of 132 route de la Fruitière. During their retirement, the two former teachers René and Anne-Marie Favre explored the world. Their travels are above all encounters, the interests of enthusiasts. A history book of faraway lands for René, and a fantastic but tangible herbarium for Annie. But when they return from these expeditions, it s their house that changes. As if undergoing a second metamorphosis. The old renovated barn at 132 Route de la Fruitière has been given a final chrysalis. The walls are filled with colourful objects and prints of exotic negatives. The stones here are filled with prints from elsewhere. Without intending to, René and Annie have turned 132 Route la Fruitière into a museum inhabited by its curators. Elsewhere Here is their catalogue, retracing each of René and Annie s journeys through objects as mystical as they are foreign. Par LEs vieux Blocs Édition Les vieux blocs traces the history of a group of buildings in the Marolles district of Brussels. Emblematic of Art Nouveau architecture, it now represents a meeting point between a social building and an architectural one. This project invites us to explore this controversial dynamic by bringing together the tourist side and the social side in the same architecture, with a testimonial from a neighbour and images of tourists strolling through the district. Par Terrain Gurzelen Édition It s important, even temporarily, to create parentheses in society, bubbles of utopia that can burst at any moment. The energy that emanates from these ephemeral moments is unique. Gurz is a sensory stroll that hijacks, appropriates and translates the materiality of the Terrain de la Gurzelen, a football pitch temporarily occupied by the residents of the city of Biel. The aim is to leave a trace of the life of this surreal place, which will soon disappear. Par 14 21 Vidéo This simulation shows the duality between the inflows and the threats posed by the Grande Dixence dam to the population of the valleys below. It traces the hypothetical course of water from the dam to the town of Sierre. Par CITY STADIUM LEAGUE Édition The city stadium is a multi-purpose urban facility designed for sporting activities and an ideal meeting place for local residents, reinforcing social cohesion. CITY STADIUM LEAGUE, halfway between the famous vignette collection albums and reportage, is an immersive object retracing an amateur football tournament held on 7 and 8 May 2024 in Renens. It highlights not only the sporting event itself, but also the social and unifying impact of the event. Par Hotel à gogo Édition The aim was to pay homage to the abandoned Grand Hôtel Chaumont & Golf in Neuchâtel. Having closed, because it was recluse of any civilization, in the heights of Neuchâtel. At the time it was in operation, the hotel used to organise themed activities to attract customers, but these were unsuccessful and the hotel went bankrupt. So I based the concept of my edition on this theme, recreating melancholy costume scenes inside the hotel, as if someone had never stopped carrying out these activities in this place frozen in time. I did all this with the help of official documents I d picked up on the spot, such as activity reports and flyers promoting the evenings, the bands, the fancy dress costumes and the concerts. These are included in the edition to accompany the photographic sequence. Par

Gamepics An exhibition at the Olympic Museum by the students in Foundation Year – Photography option at ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne. Under the photographer s direction Nicolas Haeni, the students have explored the theme of the Olympic Games by immersing themselves in its diversity. Through photography and moving images, the young photographers offer a fresh and curious look at these disciplines, inviting us to look beyond mere performance to contemplate the beauty of detail hidden in each sport.
An academic network dedicated to sport, SMART MOVE aims to strengthen the Lake Geneva region, and in particular the Canton of Vaud, in its role as an international academic reference in the field of sport. Service Design - 2023 During the service design course, the 3rd year of the Graphic Design, Photography and Media & Interaction Design bachelor s degree programs realized multi-media projects. A collaboration of the Visual Communication department with the theme of SDGs (*Sustainable Development Goals). The theme named "For a good cause, make the SDGS a reality" aims to develop a cause close to the heart of the different student groups. Each project is composed of at least two different supports, one primary and one secondary. The projects could therefore take any form the students deemed relevant, be it a website, editions and posters, a video sequence, or even virtual reality. The SDGs are to be achieved worldwide and by all UN member states by 2030. This means that all states must play an equal role in finding common solutions to the world s pressing challenges. Switzerland is also required to implement the objectives at national level. In addition, incentives must be created to encourage non-governmental players to make an increasingly active contribution to sustainable development. The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with their 169 targets, form the core of the Agenda 2030. They reconcile the economic, social and ecological dimensions of sustainable development and, for the first time, place the fight against poverty and sustainable development on the same agenda.Sex on the Lake Edition & video Sex On The Lake is a playful, popular science book. In the form of an illustrated story, the book presents all the players involved in the feminization of fish and explains their respective responsibilities. This serious phenomenon is not yet widely publicized. Our case study, the disappearance of river trout from Lake Leman, deals with the subject in a precise way, to reach a wider audience. Today s wastewater treatment plants do not filter chemical waste. This waste, these micropollutants, ends up in the water, threatening the biodiversity of aquatic environments. A short video to poetically raise awareness of the feminization of fish. In contrast to the book, the impact of the various players is dealt with in flashback. The video takes the point of view of the fish, so that the viewer is touched by the problem. The colors, formal aspects and titling are consistent with the book. By , & Pour mieux vivre ensemble Edition & video/teaser Pour mieux vivre ensemble is a project aimed at promoting sustainable neighborhoods. The aim of this edition is to summarize and popularize the concept of eco-neighborhoods, based on concrete examples of structures already established in Switzerland. Its main objective is to promote the emergence, realization and understanding of these living spaces which, in response to the current global crisis, seem to represent a most interesting solution. By Laeticia Jakob , Julien Caulet , Ilaria Citti ile verte Edition & website New housing is being built all the time to meet growing demand. However, the Ile verte project questions the place of plants in urban environments. Its aim is to raise public awareness of the many benefits it brings to the environment around our homes. With sustainability and ecology in mind, we looked at ways of revitalizing existing areas. In a carefully crafted edition, combining individual testimonials, informative texts and photographic images, we present the project from an entertaining angle. In this way, we give readers the opportunity to construct their own images, thanks to a subtle play on transparency. As for our website, which serves as a second medium, it reveals the major themes addressed in our edition. By Tony Altermatt , Jeanne Weber , Romain OederlinOutburst Fanzine & Website Despite recent waves of feminism, ordinary sexism is still trivialized and invisible in privileged circles. It was against this backdrop that OUTBURST n°1 was born, the first in a series of leaflets designed to provide information on discrimination against women in the workplace. In the form of a malleable, playful brochure, this project allows for rapid distribution, while being easily reproducible, in order to make information accessible to the new generation. The brochure is designed to offer several levels of reading, including testimonials, articles and real-life situations, to better grasp the issues at stake in this crucial subject. As a second support, an interactive web experience offers an overview of the brochure s content, enabling direct promotion of the project via an online medium. By , & VIF Website & Instagram It s not uncommon for students to put aside sports or other physical activities in favor of their studies. Unfortunately, this trend has a negative impact on their physical and mental well-being, leading to a loss of motivation. This is where the VIF platform comes into its own. Its aim is to inform the residents of Lausanne about the different places offering a variety of physical activities adapted to each individual. Whether you prefer to practice a sport alone, in a duo, find a team or even join a club for the more determined, VIF guides you towards the best options. What s more, in order to fully convince you, VIF makes it its duty to find the most affordable offers for even the tightest budgets. If you hold a HES student card or are a 3rd year gymnasium student in Switzerland, or if you belong to the HES-UNIL-EPFL community, the CHUV, the SIFO, the CIO, or the BCV, this platform is specially designed for you. By , , Petit manifeste de l information Book, Video & poster Recent events remind us of the importance of having access to reliable, verified, quality infomartion. Censorship, conspiracy theories and the issues raised by new platforms are all challenges for today s journalists. Through this project, we aim to raise awareness of journalistic professions and their importance in our societies. By synthesizing UNESCO s "Manual for Journalism Education and Training", we are making it accessible in a small pocket book for the general public. The project is visually guided by a bubble, a metaphor for the magnifying glass and investigation. The bubble makes the guide fun, gives it a sense of identity and creates a link between digital and printed media. By , & The Legal Clock Journal & teaser The project aims to address the harmful consequences of a lack of free and informed access to sexual, reproductive and family health. We focus here on the obstacles encountered during the abortion process. In some cases, these lead to the use of unsafe methods of termination, which can have serious consequences for both physical and mental health, including death. In "The Legal Clock", we take stock of the different situations in Europe from a geographical point of view, and present the different abortion methods available. With the aim of informing and demystifying the way procedures are carried out, we also present testimonials from people who have had a safe, clandestine abortion, and from those who have not been able to access an abortion. By , & NEO Website & posters The project, in the form of a website, retraces the path of pesticides, whose presence spreads throughout the pollination process. From its first use on plants, to its consumption in the form of honey, the journey takes visual form in a series of photos, somewhere between docu-fiction and archive. It is accompanied by a narrative text, facts and the consequences for the environment and living beings at each stage. By , & ≥92 Edition & video The edition uses contextual elements such as statistics, articles and other documents to provide a context for nuclear energy consumption and its implications and risks. Following this, a final section presents elements of semiotics related to the management of nuclear waste. In this way, the reader acquires the necessary tools to understand the consequences of nuclear consumption. The video serves as a teaser for the edition, taking certain elements and codes present in the book and representing them in a dystopian future, in order to materialize this temporal distance that may seem abstract. By , & CORAL VIRUS Edition & instagram BLUE is a quarterly magazine that aims to raise readers awareness of the threats facing aquatic ecosystems, oceans, rivers and their inhabitants. It is aimed at people who are sensitive to environmental issues, eager to discover and learn about contemporary problems and solutions linked to water preservation. The very first issue of this publication, entitled "Coral Virus", looks at the phenomenon of coral bleaching and the slow disappearance of corals worldwide. The magazine s mission is to inform readers about the causes and consequences of this phenomenon, while presenting current solutions. In addition to raising awareness of our individual responsibilities, this issue aims to challenge and re-evaluate our perception of corals and their preservation. It also features interviews with enthusiasts of the subject, as well as with a renowned researcher from the University of Lausanne. BLUE magazine has an Instagram account, under the name blue.magazine.ch, which aims to be an interactive, dynamic and proactive space in its publications. We regularly share news about the aquatic world and relay the work of organizations committed to protecting water resources. By Arthur Lucchesi , Eloïse Genoud , Yan Miranda

Documentary film workshop with Guillaume Brac The 2022 documentary workshop was lead by Guillaume Brac. In partnership with the Lausanne Sport! ECAL film department proposed that I accompany ten second-year students on a documentary mandate financed by Lausanne Sport, the city s historic soccer club. Although I am interested in this sport, I was very clear from the start: it was not a question of making a film about soccer or the functioning of the club, but a film in which soccer would be the starting point, the spark, allowing me to go on to much more personal, intimate, singular elements. I insisted on the liberating power of the commission, at least when it is accompanied by a real freedom, which was the case here. I encouraged each student to find, if necessary to invent, the form, the device, the staging, that best corresponded to his or her sensitivity and subject. Documentary films offer to curious and adventurous filmmakers infinitely more possibilities in terms of film writing than fiction. And I believe that the films of this workshop, of an extreme diversity of forms, tones, and motifs, are a brilliant demonstration of this. ON 2040 - MASTER TYPE DESIGN Following a collaboration with the Swiss avant-garde brand On, ECAL is proud to present the interdisciplinary work carried out jointly by the 2nd year students of the Product Design, Photography and Type Design Masters. Under the direction of Larissa Kasper, artistic director invited by the MA in Type Design, 14 students question the construction of written language, and explore its futuristic developments, both alphabetical and ideographic. For On, they offer a new writing system, which will accompany the sole of the future. In 2010 On created a new running shoe sole with a disruptive approach: CloudTec®. Built around a set of “flexible elements”, On soles ensure cushioned landing and propulsive take-off for a unique running sensation. This design has since been adopted by running enthusiasts and professionals alike. Nowadays, the search for new materials and technologies encourages the brand to explore the future of soles. It is in this perspective that the collaboration between two leading entities in the Swiss design scene – ECAL and On – was born.Searching for an answer to what type of writing system could be readable for a machine in the distant future, this abstract typeface is based on a circular 5-channel encoding system, working similarly to linear punchcards. There are 25 punch combinations in the 5-channel type system, meaning 32 places to encode letters, which can host the basic Latin alphabet. Visually, the typeface was inspired by cuneiform writing, which uses the stylus on clay tablets to punch ‘holes in the material. This aesthetic has been warped into signifying a punch on a few of the 5 places and providing each character with a unique combination of digits and forms. By The concept of this dystopian writing system is inspired by the artwork The Garden of Earthly Delights (1490-1510) by Hieronymus Bosch and its tripartite structure. The Trinity takes the main role and divides the static skeleton vertically into 3 sections: Positive, Neutral, Negative; Birth, Life, Death; The Garden of Eden, The Garden of Delights and Hell. Round, angular and diagonal capital letters of the Latin alphabet are arranged in categories. With the help of 3 defined basic shapes: circle, square and line, the characters are constructed on its defined skeleton. Altogether, the writing system consists of 24 characters – the manuscript was painted analogue with black ink on translucent paper and emphasizes the dystopian character. By Between typography and pictogram, our design is evolving. Inspired by the geometric forms already present in the On logotype, we have rationalized to the extreme the concept of a refined and methodical graphic system. By a new problematic of the coded language, associated with contemporary technologies, a completely modular encrypted typography was drawn. The pictograms and letters are composed by a very simple system of curves and lines which evolve and are assembled on a square grid, divided in 4. The only rule being that the forms cannot be superimposed the ones on the others. The script is programmed under Python language, allowing to generate and to exhaust the whole of the possible ones, that is to say 624 pictograms only composed of curves, having to represent the sport, the movement and always assembled within the same grid. By , Over the course of our time, language and communication will evolve in such a way that current writing systems no longer suffice. While there will still be translation methods for older systems still known to us, the writing system of the future will free itself from present rules and conventions and organically evolve into something exceedingly more complex. By The blob is a mysterious unicellular slim mold creature growing into networks. Famous for its supposed immortality, it has also been showing signs of learning capabilities. After many years of scientific studies and stimulation, it is finally able to communicate with us in 2040. By using a morpheme-based system, the blob can express complex ideas with its web-like growths. As seen in this transcription (to be read clockwise), each tentacle and intersections represent a basic concept which is then extrapolated into sentences and finally a full text. By New proposal for sending out a message to the future about ON 20(40). This new form of constructed language and writing system is inspired by the thermal-transfer printing technics. This digital printing method is used when fast and higher durability of printed matter (especially against heat) is desired. This « New Alphabet » offers a set of uppercase characters, as well as numbers and has been developed during the one-week workshop. By In the far future, human beings will communicate in whole new ways, we will understand the world around us in a much more complex way. The two-dimensional way of reading will be slowly replaced by three-dimensional holograms, capable of giving us a faster prediction of what is written. Based on the Spatial reasoning IQ tests exercises, this new writing system helps the reader draw conclusions about shapes based on limited information. Each face of the regular polyhedron will have a unique symbol on it (letter) and the Platonic solid will represent the complexity of the entire word. Holograms are a perfect solution when we don t want our communication to be framed on a surface, but with this system, we could still write on psychical objects by simply unfolding the polyhedron into a 2D Pattern. By Over the course of our time, language and communication will evolve in such a way that current writing systems no longer suffice. While there will still be translation methods for older systems still known to us, the writing system of the future will free itself from present rules and conventions and organically evolve into something exceedingly more complex. By In order to create a “new alphabet” that could potentially store knowledge about ON 2040(0) and transmit it into the future, I developed a constructed writing system consisting of two different styles. Both styles are built on the same basis. While the more organic style has a line system for better differentiation of the individual “characters”, the restrained one has a subtle feature consisting of different stroke lengths on the edges. Despite the technical appearance, the two styles enable a visual structure of the content into different information levels, which should help decrypt the message in the future. By Klaudz is designed to visually represent speech sounds in a written form by means of symbols. The script is based on a so-called phonetic transcription, whose basic principle is that it is applicable to all languages. Since its symbols denote the same phonetic properties, they break away from a language-bound orthography. Thinking of 2040, when internationality and the spoken language are gaining more importance, it is obvious to explore the forms of expression of an alternative phonetic script. The shapes of the letters derive from an underlying grid (the IPA vowel table), which in turn corresponds to the positions of the vowels resulting from the physical position of a speaker s tongue when pronouncing those sounds. There is a round and a non-round version of each. The consonants are integrated into the script according to their groupings as diacritical marks. By

Collaboration with L Epée 1839 Regatta Very few sports, or indeed very few human activities, merit the term ‘graceful as much as does sculling. Long, streamlined craft cutting the water like a stiletto and leaving barely a ripple are among the most elegant forms of human displacement on earth. And that sense of grace conceals both the incredible power of the oarsman and the arrow-like precision of their craft. L Epée 1839 harnesses and pays homage to the grace of sculling with La Regatta, a sleek vertical clock invoking the shape of the long thin scull, with both the power (8-day power reserve) and precision of the most elegant of watch sports. Our modern lives are often busy and, at times, even chaotic, La Regatta invokes a sense of peace and calm.

Three ECAL diploma projects win the James Dyson Award 2022 (Swiss) Three ECAL graduates - Yoosung Kim in Master Product Design, Anaïs Lehmann and Lucie Herter in Bachelor Industrial Design - have won the James Dyson Award 2022 for their diploma projects. Zest – – Master Product Design Zest is a tailor-made solution for people with cerebral palsy. It is a model of sports shoes adapted to the motor skills of its users. Made using knitting and 3D printing technology, it can be adapted to any person with motor disorders and allows the creation of customised shoes that meet specific needs. A project made possible thanks to the collaboration of professional athletes with cerebral palsy and a test in the laboratory of the Swiss sports brand On. Line – – Bachelor Industrial Design Line is a 100% natural alternative to the plastic mulching films and sheets that are omnipresent in agriculture and horticulture. This innovative project aims at solving the problem of plastic micro-particles in market gardening and thus reducing soil pollution. Made from linseed oil-treated flax, Line is a highly resistant film that does not release any chemical microparticles into the soil. Its woven strip systems make it very flexible for use in a variety of plantings. R2Home – – Bachelor Industrial Design While 2 000 radiosondes are sent into the atmosphere every day to collect meteorological data, only 20% of them are found. R2Home, a paragliding robot, makes it possible to control the landing of radiosondes and thus minimise economic losses and environmental pollution. Yoosung Kim – Zest Cerebral palsy (CP) is one of the most common diseases in the world. Despite their disability, people with CP would like to be more physically active, as evidenced by the Paralympics, which features many disabled players and sports. However, there is a lack of shoes for such people. Simply putting on the shoes and lacing them often presents a challenge for the user, who most of the time has to ask for help from their coach. My Zest shoe is easy to put on with one hand. In addition, it can be customised according to personal physical ability using knitting and 3D printing technology. This project was developed thanks to feedback from professional athletes with CP and testing in the lab of Swiss sportswear brand On.

Alessandro Simone – Movement of Change The consequences of climate change are becoming increasingly important and time is running out to act. Protests are taking place on the streets and online through the promotion of information, media and visual content. Movement of Change has been developed to explore new protest tools to raise awareness of the climate emergency. The project links outdoor sports with climate propaganda to create unusual ways of spreading messages by collaborating with a growing community strongly connected to the natural playground and its protection. Movement of Change is a series of technical tools for sports that use athletes performances to create powerful visuals, shaping a community to protect what is, for some, a playground but above all our home.

ECAL x MEHARI EDEN The 2CV Méhari Club Cassis has developed an electric version of the iconic Citroën released in 1968 : the EDEN. From its inception, this car was designed for summer sports and leisure activity. Our current renewed interest in outdoor activities together with electric technology makes this car particularly attractive. With this in mind, the 2nd-year BA students in Industrial Design, under the direction of Stéphane Halmaï-Voisard, Head of Programme, and designer Elric Petit, showcase a series of accessories for tomorrow s electric Méhari. A genuine “LEGO car”, the Méhari lent itself perfectly to being reinvented by ECAL s students : a steering wheel with a built-in Bluetooth speaker, a rowboat doubling as a roof for the ride towards your favourite boating spot, practical surfboard and bike racks, a ready-to-use picnic set hidden in the tailgate, a waterproof roof cover made from banana plants, or the backrest of the rear seat that converts into a side table are just some of products on display.

ECAL at the Youth Olympic Games – Lausanne 2020,09–22.01.2020,Lausanne On the occasion of the Youth Olympic Games – Lausanne 2020 , ECAL particpates in several projects. On the occasion of the Youth Olympic Games – Lausanne 2020, ECAL particpates in several projects: --- Design of the cauldron, medal trays and podiums The cauldron, the medal trays and the podiums are three of the most symbolic elements of the Olympic Games. Second-year Industrial Design Bachelor s students from the ECAL were tasked with designing them. The students had to meet certain operational constraints and technical requirements: The cauldron must be able to be supplied with wood pellets, the result of a partnership between several organisations in the Vaud region, including the Lignum Vaud, which brings together all the regional players in the wood sector. This ecological innovation makes this cauldron the most eco-responsible in the history of the Olympic Games. It must also be removable and an integral part of the Games legacy. The podiums would have to be assembled outside at the last minute, often on uneven ground. They needed to be solid, light and large enough for several athletes. The medal trays had to be big enough to hold both medals and mascots. Cauldron Design: ECAL (Bachelor Industrial Design) Student: François Lafortune Production: C-FOR! + Ecole de la construction This cauldron project took inspiration from “freeskiing” culture, seeking to reflect it in both style and substance. Freeskiing is the world of skateparks and snowparks, with which many young people are very familiar. The installation comprises a mini jump and a ramp, with the cauldron placed at the top. The project s designer, François, envisaged that it would be an integral part of the Opening Ceremony and that the cauldron could be lit by a freerider. After Lausanne 2020, the installation is set to be converted into part of a permanent skatepark for the people of Lausanne. Podium Design: ECAL (Bachelor Industrial Design) Students: Louis Bétin + Theo Luvisotto + Estelle Rougerie Production: Ecole de la construction The podiums juxtapose the outlines of three mountain ranges where the competitions are being held: the Jura mountains, the Vaud Alps and the mountains of St Moritz. Plateaux des médailles Design and Production: (Bachelor Industrial Design) Student: Olivia Dall Omo The medal trays have coverings in the colours of the official hat worn by the volunteers. “The outfit is completed by a pair of mittens. So you ll be nice and warm, and all set to go cheer on your favourite athletes!” Mapping of the BodyCity Show Unique creation imagined for Lausanne en Jeux! - the animation program of the Youth Olympic Games Lausanne 2020 - BodyCity is a show where arts and urban sports meet in an impressive open-air setting, on the place Centrale of Lausanne. Five performances will take place in public on January 9, 11, 12, 18 and 19, 2020 at 6 p.m. "Bodies in fusion with the city", it is from this strong image that Nicolas Musin directed BodyCity, a contemporary show questioning the relationship of young generations to the city. On an open-air stage representing a city in constant mutation, more than 50 performers aged between 9 and 30 years will cross their disciplines from January 9, bringing together urban arts and sports suchas skateboarding, BMX, rollerblading, scooter, parkour and dance. Imagined within the framework of Lausanne en Jeux!, this show is above all a work of youth carried by art schools and urbandisciplines training centers established in the Lausanne conurbation. BodyCity was thus able to bring together different Lausanne actors such as the students of the ECAL (conception of video images) of the HEMU (composition of the original music and recording of the soundtrack), thedancers of the Ecole-Atelier Rudra Béjart (dance and percussion), JDS Events (hip hop, breakdance) aswell as the riders of La Fièvre and the tracers of X-Trem Move. A meeting between different cultures and disciplines that the director Nicolas Musin has managed to reunite in order to offer a unique and unprecedented show in Lausanne. The mapping of the show was thus created by the students of the Visual Communication Department (BA Graphic Design, BA Photography, BA Media & Interaction Design) under the direction of Vincent Jacquier, Angelo Benedetto, Jean-Vincent Simonet and Mitch Paone while editing was managed by Amaury Hamon and Clément Lambelet.

ECAL Milano 2019: Objects for Nomadic Life by ECAL/Sebastian Maluska,09–14.04.2019,SaloneSatellite, Rho Sebastian Maluska, ECAL Master Product Design graduate (2018), presents three outdoor projects related to a nomadic lifestyle, including camping and travelling. HD Images “Nest” is a low-profile car volume extension, acting as a tent and storage space. Inspired by the sailing world and its technology, it is made up of two frames covered with waterproof sailing fabric. Once it opens up, “Nest” provides sheltered sleeping space for two people. While driving, sport equipment, such as surfboards or skis, can be stored on top or inside of “Nest” between the two fabric layers. Modern mountaineers travel as fast and light as possible, trying out new routes and pushing the boundaries of distance and time. They are never assured of being able to make it home before dark or of getting to the next safe spot before the weather changes. Naturally, a backup option becomes an essential part of your kit. This backup comes in the shape of an “Odon” backpack, essentially a hyper-light shelter solution. This shelter is so light that it can always remain attached to your daypack. “TRS 1” is a trail running shoe with a replaceable outsole. This lets users personalise their own trail running shoes. The inner shoe can be changed to adapt to colder or warmer temperatures or even for washing when needed. An added advantage is that certain parts of the shoe can be easily repaired or replaced when worn or damaged. Marie Rime – Nous somme libres et nous restons nos propres maîtres Sport shooting is a very common activity in Switzerland. It is practiced as an elite sport or in a more popular way. But both share values like self-control, liberty and security, well preserved in Switzerland. Sport shooting has is own conventions, that my work tries to enlighten and appropriate. It can be seen as one of Switzerland s stages where each actor works for the strength and cohesion of the community. Sport shooting is a very common activity in Switzerland. Vitrines ECAL/Hermès at Zürich,03.09–15.11.2013,Store Hermès Zürich As a result of a collaboration with Hermès (Switzerland), the students of the Master of Advanced Studies in Design for Luxury and Craftsmanship of ECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne conceived vitrine proposals for their Zürich store. Under the supervision of Head of department Nicolas Le Moigne, the aim of the workshop was to create 5 large and 9 small vitrines by developing different compositions around Hermès s annual theme of “A sporting Life”, while staying true to the brand s universe and design codes. Following a presentation of life-size mockups, one of the 10 propositions particularly seduced the jury of 3 brand managers. The “Silhouette” project by student Fabien Gerlier is conceived of different sculptural structures designed to present the objects from the Autumn-Winter collection. Caught in the beam of light of a projector, the objects create shadows which illustrate the “A sporting Life” theme. Thus a climber climbs a mountain created out of the shadow of an item of clothing while a dancer appears graciously due to the superposition of jewellery, a scarf and a belt. Combining simplicity and poetry, this idea was developed in all 5 of the store vitrines, creating different compositions, each one playful and artistic. Address: Hermès / Bahnhofstrasse 28A / CH-8001 Zürich /Suisse Dates: From September 3rd to November 15th 2013 www.hermes.ch

Collaboration with Hermès 2013 The collaboration with Hermes allowed the students from the Master of Advanced Studies in Design for Luxury and Craftsmanship to discover the universe of window displays, where supports, lighting and colours need to draw your eye to the objects being showcased. Fabien Gerlier s project is a device allowing the viewer to read the display in two stages. At first the viewer sees the sculptural metal and marble displays. Then, on approaching the vitrine, the viewer sees the silhouettes of athletes in the projected shadows. The composition of the displays and Hermes products create, with the light, a series of archetypal shadow silhouettes of various athletes each practicing a different sport.

Collaboration with Charles Schambourg This new collaboration with the Maison Charles Schambourg, a small company in Brussels specialising in woven leather, the students had the opportunity to create a variety of objects out of this natural material. For Spine, by Virginie Garcia, the aim was to conceive an object which clearly shows the properties of this unique textile. Spine is a basket whose structure is created by folds in a single piece of woven leather, inspired by origami, and thin strips of spring steel. For Lampe, Josephine Choquet wanted to work on the elasticity and flexibility of woven leather. Like the hoop, or tambour, used in embroidery, the leather is stretched in a brass structure allowing for a smooth, clean surface. The oblique light given off by the neon tube at the base, reveals the beauty of the texture created by the weave. JinSik Kim chose to draw animal shapes in order to return to the leather s origin while highlighting its visual and tactile properties. Bearing in mind the endless size, colour and weave options that the woven leather brings, this series was designed with pure and relatively abstract lines whilst maintaining a varied and playful quality. For Hesychia Petra Kuon was interested in woven leather s qualities relating to sound and sound proofing. Thanks to this natural material and the fine weaving the Brussels Maison Charles Schambourg are able to produce, these modules can efficiently absorb sound. Thanks to a simple symmetrical frame, it is possible to create any composition with the colourful gradient design of the modules. The Set de tables project by Leslie Landucci aims to highlight the sculptural qualities of woven leather by using it in a 3-dimensional manner. This collection of tables takes its reference as much from ancient woodworking techniques as it does from the world of sports and even the graphic qualities of traditional boiled sweets.

On Tour On the occasion of the 2010 editions of the Tour de Romandie and Tour de Suisse, the ECAL has made a photographic and editorial project about competitive cycling. Conducted in collaboration with La Vaudoise Assurances and Les Editions Infolio "On Tour" was primarily to explore the forms of convergence between creative photography, sports sponsorship and the world of publishing. Students in photography, under the direction of their teachers, were immersed in the world of Tours to produce views likely to exceed the stereotypes usually associated with this type of sport s events. According to their sensitivities, they were especially encouraged to inspire from innovative approaches offered by a growing number of contemporary photographers. In parallel with this prospective approach in terms of artistic and documentary photography, the goal was also to take account of recent redefinitions in the field of branding and communication and to generate original contributions, interviews and essays, on this issue. The results of this project are multiple: Production of an archive of thousands of images. Publication of "On Tour: Tour de Romandie & Tour de Suisse 2010," 3000 copies Publication of "Off Tour, compte-rendu d étapes", 500 copies, (interviews & essays) Exhibition at ECAL Edition of postcards Acquisition of photographs by La Vaudoise Assurances Press articles On line publication (La Vaudoise Assurances website) Main applicantsECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne Pierre Fantys (project leader)Research teamFrançois Rappo (artistic direction) Nicolas Faure, Joël Tettamanti (photographers, coaching) Philippe Keanel (in charge of theoretical essays) Joël Vacheron (in charge of "Off Tour") Elise Guillod (assistant) Cédric Raccio (assistant) Erol Gemma (assistant) Robert Huber (assistant) Students of the department of visual communication / photography ECALPartnersLa Vaudoise assurances InfolioDuréeapril 2010 – september 2012 Supported byECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne Strategic fund of the University of Applied Sciences Western Switzerland (HES-SO RCDAV)DisseminationPublication On Tour, Tour de Romandie & Tour de Suisse en 2010 © 2010, Infolio éditions, CH-Gollion / www.infolio.ch ISBN: 978-2-88474-621-2

Justine Bannwart – Le Frelon Helvétique "While trying to find a diploma subject, I watched a documentary about an ancestral sport: the Hornussen. A Swiss national sport, it s mostly played in the German part of Switzerland and pratically unknown in the French part. Often qualified as the Swiss farmers sport it s sometimes deprecated by the public because of its festive characteristics. My diploma project led me to meet the followers of this sport and to learn more about my own culture. In order to share my experience with the public I created a publication for an Hornussen s retrospective at the Swiss Sports Museum. Mixing technical information and graphics about the game and more personal illustrations inspired by Swiss Poya naïve paintings, the object gives this traditional sport a contemporary look." Guillaume Collignon – Flight Launching Monuments Complex and monumental, ski jumps are constructions that have a strong impact on their landscape and their environment. Although ski jumping is practiced only by a few people, its architecture requires a significant investment. Sometimes architectural monuments and prestigious showcases, sometimes relics of a past glory, I was interested in these architectural “UFOs”, wanting them to be not completely revealed, leaving room for imagination. If the strangeness of these constructions amazes the public and transformed the landscape, their rise and fall raises many questions about sports and the Olympics… Complex and monumental, ski jumps are constructions that have a strong impact on their landscape and their environment. Hidden Carbon This project is a manifesto initiated by the EPFL+ECAL Lab to go beyond the high tech look of carbon so as to explore its full potential. Two major design schools, ECAL/University of art and design Lausanne in Switzerland, and Ensci-Les Ateliers in Paris, have risen to the challenge. Carbon fibre composites are gradually entering our daily life thanks to their exceptional mechanical properties – incredibly tough but extremely lightweight. Used in numerous high-end sports applications, this material has become a high tech icon – to such an extent that one often forgets its main advantage: to make uniquely light shapes and uses possible, with astonishing thermal, sound or electrical performances. The objective of the Hidden Carbon project is to rediscover the relevance of carbon fibre by investigating original object typologies and uses based on its special mechanical properties. Under the leadership of Jean-François Dingjian for ENSCI-Les Ateliers and Alexis Georgacopoulos for ECAL, the EPFL+ECAL Lab brought together thirty students on this project, in cooperation with world-leading carbon experts – the Décision shipyard and the Laboratory of Polymer and Composite Technology of the Ecole polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL).
