Sileo is a social design project based on the “housing first” principle, which aims to provide homeless people with a roof so that they can reintegrate society. Starting from an existing frame hut, the challenge was to design a 10m2 interior to make it a pleasant place to live at a low cost. The project consists of four individual cabins containing a bed with storage, a wardrobe, a mirror, a removable desk, a chair and shelves. All these elements have been designed in Swiss spruce wood and are arranged in the cabin in such a way as to take up as little space as possible. Two other huts serve as a common kitchen and a common bathroom. This place is intended to be supervised by a Geneva association for the homeless.

Potential Objects is a project in the form of a video game/digital tool in virtual reality. The game invites users to a fictional world in which they can move and design objects from a library of elements that can be linked together. In order to have varied results regarding the produced objects, people will be able to integrate pieces designed by previous users when creating a new object.

Twist was thought out as part of the upcoming industrial design exhibition at mudac - Musée cantonal de design et d’arts appliqués contemporains. The aim of this project is to engage children’s curiosity about design, for whom the idea of visiting a museum is often not the most exciting. How can we encourage a stimulating visit and discovery of the exhibits? By bringing out an object from the exhibition, the Bold chair by Big-Game studio, this project transforms it into an interactive installation. Guided by a character on screen, children are invited to interact with certain parts of the chair: sitting, pinching, turning, etc. These interactions trigger games, and information is presented in a playful way, thus creating a direct and memorable relationship with the object and raising awareness of design.

Miksyn is an installation that invites us to rethink our relationship with living things by challenging our natural aversion to the various insects and arachnids of our domestic ecosystem, my primary motivation being to highlight the unexplored richness of microscopic forms. Miksyn is part of research on digital interactions with the microcosm. By decontextualising these tiny creatures under the lens of a high-resolution optical microscope, my project puts the spotlight on their imperceptible peculiarities. Can we use technology to overcome our bodily limitations and awaken a holistic conception of nature?

Grappaa is an artist-run exhibition space that I began working on in early 2021. It was built based on makeshift institutional spaces, e.g. art fairs and more recently, mass vaccination centres. The walls and furniture in these mega events become modules in the landscape of barren multipurpose warehouses. For Grappaa , through a process of urban hacking, the car parks become the grid for any spatial configuration. I pay rent by the hour. It’s not cheap.

Through a narrative experience, Sanctuaires invites visitors to discover their relationship with plants. This project is structured as an interactive exhibition on the great trees of the city of Lausanne. As in a treasure hunt, visitors have to look for the trees, thanks to clues and a map on the app. When they find one, they connect to it through touch, thus triggering the beginning of the experience. Like a wise storyteller, the sanctuary-tree shares a tale with the visitors, telling them about its sensitive experience and observable universe. Urban tree development coincides with the advent of issues related to the ecological crisis. What do trees have to say about this and how can their perception help us improve our lifestyles?

Having a particular interest in research and curation, I have designed scenography to showcase a selection of objects in the shadows. This work is a continuation of my dissertation Une promenade dans l’ombre. My goal being to create a sensory exhibition, I based my work on Tanizaki’s In Praise of Shadows in which the author invites us to become aware of details that are only perceived in the shadows. Thanks to the latter, the senses are awakened, and objects offer their discreet beauty, imperceptible at first sight. Tanizaki writes: “We find beauty not in the thing itself but in the patterns of shadows, the light and the darkness, that one thing against another creates… Were it not for shadows, there would be no beauty.”

A collection of clever furniture and household accessories to help organise everyday life. Following the method of carefully observing our daily routines to identify unique needs and then creating intuitive and practical products, the Bachelor of Industrial Design students imagined a collection of clever furniture and household accessories to help organise our daily lives, under the guidance of designer Michel Charlot. As an important part of the development of MUJI products is based on detailed photographic studies in people's homes, the students were invited to follow the same process by documenting the spontaneous state of their own homes and other people's environments in order to reveal how they interact with the products, and to identify how the objects are used as direct inspiration for their design.

A collection of neophyte views on current agriculture through the prism of design. Invited by the Musée des Arts Décoratifs et du Design de Bordeaux (madd-bordeaux), second-year Bachelor of Industrial Design students at ECAL, under the guidance of designers Erwan Bouroullec and Adrien Rovero, have given form to their observations and questions about the current agricultural landscape. "Real Facts" is a collection of neophyte points of view on current agriculture, through the prism of design. This project was created at the initiative of Constance Rubini, director of the madd-bordeaux, on the occasion of the exhibition "Paysans designers, un art du vivant" at the Musée des Arts décoratifs et du Design de Bordeaux (madd-bordeaux) presented from 14 July 2021 to 17 January 2022. With the precious support of the Association vaudoise de promotion des métiers de la terre Prométerre, and in the framework of the Summer University programme of the Direction générale de l'enseignement supérieur (DGES) - Canton de Vaud.

“Lasius Flavus” is an immersive and didactic experience  developed in collaboration with the Museum of Zoology. Throughout the tour, visitors discover the world of the yellow ant, its habitat and perception of the world. This interactive VR project offers an interpretation of these various aspects to lead us to reflect on the relationship that each species has with its environment. Moreover, the exercise of thinking on a scale that is not ours can help us question our own future.

Marie Douel and Emile Barret from Hors Pistes led a workshop with the 2nd year bachelor in industrial design. They asked the students to create a maze made entirely from the paper waste of the ECAL printing centre. Based on the principle of the exquisite corpse, each group created one part of the labyrinth with a strong aesthetic and structural approach, allowing the visitor to get lost in distinct universes.

Inspired by the text The Camille Stories written by Donna Haraway, somewhere in the future, groups of people are organizing themselves into micro societies. The installation The Sound of the Links is a fragment of this civilization about how humans experience communication with plants in an attempt to rebuild a way of living in communion with the species that surround them. I would like to raise awareness about these imperceptible phenomena discovered by biologists, so that we can imagine a different relationship to the world than that of exploitation.

Plug-in allows you to discover and enjoy music content in an original way at any time and in any place. The consumption of sound is affiliated with the environment in which it is found, creating an intimate and individual listening context linked to common places. The ambiguity of the object will allow the most curious to discover its exclusive content, combining private speeches and public music. Designed to promote a musical event such as a festival, it offers a tangible and different way of sharing and communication.

Starting from the observation that technology evolves by putting more and more the visual in the foreground, especially via VR, I have chosen to play on the partial deprivation of this sense, to appeal to more primary instincts. The user is in the VR space where light is captured and redistributed to represent the sound, giving him brief insights into what surrounds him. He will therefore have to use his ability to mentally visualize a space in order to be able to evolve in the experience.

Information Mesh is a web platform celebrating the 30th anniversary of the World Wide Web that explores social, technical, cultural and legal facts throughout different interactive timelines. It was initiated in October 2018 during a one week workshop in partnership with swissnex San Francisco, where students visited key partners and began developing the project.  The timelines present an overview of Web history, starting with the proposal for hypertext by Tim Berners-Lee at CERN in 1989, initially under the name "Information Mesh." From this start date, users can then explore 30 years of evolution. infomesh.org

Station Lights is a luminary installation specially made for the opening of the Gare du Châble train station. This project is the result of a course led at ECAL/Ecole cantonale d'art de Lausanne by Angelo Benedetto, Vincent Jacquier and Pauline Saglio. The technical development and production was entrusted to SIGMASIX, a studio started by ECAL graduates, who produce interactive installations in Switzerland and the rest of the world. Constellations is a one-week workshop held by Béatrice Lartigue for the first year Bachelor M&ID students in November 2018. The idea behind the workshop is to explore the invisible physical process of electrical conduction. Using Touchboards, students explored different ways of giving form to this idea of electrical conduction by creating diverse projects using sound, video projection and/or installation. MIDI Box MIDI Box is a Touchboard based MIDI controller that allows you to manually play back and create sequences for different virtual instruments. Light them all is a multiplayer game taking place in an interactive installation composed of lamps, projection mapping and a mobile web application. When users connect with their mobile phone, a light source that they can control in the installation appears in projection. This ball of light turns on each of the physical lamps it touches for a limited time. When a lamp come on, it’s lampshade filters the light, thus recomposing the map.

This immersive installation created by Pietro Alberti proposes an innovative way to discover an emblematic room of the musée des Arts Décoratifs et du Design in Bordeaux (madd-bordeaux). Thanks to Virtual Reality, the perception of the 15th century’s architecture, gildings and furnitures are constantly changing, giving the spectator, a completely new vision of the space and its antic masterpieces. The musée des Arts Décoratifs et du Design in Bordeaux (madd-bordeaux) paired with ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne for a collaboration that led to an interactive installation in the museum. I never promised you a garden offers an immersive journey inside a fantasized hanging garden using virtual reality. The public is invited to walk among chimeric plants and make them blossom with a simple touch. Having noticed that some spectators have a tendency to be uninvolved and passive before an interactive design artwork, this project questions their willful participation. What is to be done when a spectator makes the conscious choice to not interact with an interactive project? What is the design of refusal?

The global context of personal and intimate data diffusion and the associated challenges enabled me to open a discussion on the contemporary medical sector and on the cognitive evolutions linked to the development of new technologies. This Rube Goldberg machine shows a chain reaction similar to the breath’s journey within the human body, thanks to the combination of electronic devices and a person’s sensory input. The spectator corporally extends himself spatially thanks to the real time interaction of his main vital functions with a physical and digital environment.

Tangible worlds is a project combining virtual reality and tactile sensations, allowing us to feel as close as possible to the virtual elements present in the installation. My research aims to make sure that the user doesn’t limit himself by simply observing the virtual universe, but interacts with the material within and become attentive of the feedback through his sensations and feelings that come by touching these textures. The installation is composed of three different boxes. Each box contains an IR distance sensor, which detects when a hand is inserted and display the virtual world attributed to the box. This new virtual world surrounds the user. A sensor is placed on each wall within the boxes, this sensor recognizes the hand and activates an animation inside the virtual world. I tried to map the sensors in the virtual universe so that a little clue is given to the user and will lead him to trigger the animations.

Asserting its wish to play with the flimsy distinctions between “objets d’art” and practical objects and to question the legitimacy of an exhibition on the fringes of such an outstanding event as the Milan Salone del Mobile, ECAL has invited visual artist John M Armleder to curate an exhibition displaying side by side the works of students from the Bachelor Fine Arts and the Bachelor Industrial Design programmes. After having (re)visited some of John M Armleder exhibitions and seen his iconic pieces, the  Furniture Sculpture  among others, the students used their chosen materials and processes to devise their exhibition pieces, which they developed at ECAL during a full semester under the watchful eye of designer and professor Christophe Guberan and Stéphane Kropf, artist and Head of the Bachelor Fine Arts. Playing with scale, shapes, colours and materials, the exhibited works defy pre-established categories: a rocking zebra for gangling children, a handless clock, a minimal painting with maximalist details, taped ceramic vases, a menhir made from recycled plastic, concrete marble… All piled up in a visual cacophony that is happily deliberate. Pour la troisième fois consécutive, l’ECAL s’associe au Festival Images de Vevey, manifestation gratuite centrée autour de l’image contemporaine. La spécificité du Festival Images est de présenter de la photographie monumentale en plein air, tout en présentant des projets autours de l’image dans un sens plus large en intérieur. Pour l’édition 2016, et suite au succès de l’installation RAFT de 2014,  les étudiants de 3e année Bachelor Design Industriel ont créé des dispositifs «aquatiques» investissant les berges de Vevey le temps du Festival Images.

The Ptolemy Mission is an interactive installation that encourages to experience the excitement of exploration by taking a look at everyday things from a different perspective. The project originated from my passion for the Space Exploration and my admiration of the beauty of the Universe. I wanted to show that ordinary objects we hold in our hands and think of them as simple and familiar can, in reality, be far from our understanding, like remote planets observed through a telescope. Exploring such ordinary objects can be as fascinating and surprising as exploring faraway planets.

His project called «Luc»  is a new typology of giant exquisite corpses. Project realised as part of Prix Emile Hermès with the support of Fondation d’entreprise Hermès.

Workshop

The workshop was an introduction to machine learning and image classification. Students were ask to bring 50 objects each, that we photographed. Those objects have been analyzed and classified by an algorithm which allowed us to place them on the floor in the most organized possible arrangement. Each student worked on a project using the object collection. A few interesting projects were created, such as a physical search engine by key word highlighting the objects on the floor and a gradient of objects type using tracking and image recognition. quasimondo.com

When you match the prints of prints with a famous school of art and design, the result can only be explosive! Emilio Pucci pairs with the Ecole Cantonal d’Art de Lausanne (ECAL) for a collaboration born at Granaiolo, the brand’s archive and talent center nearby Florence. During a three-day workshop led by Vincent Jacquier, a selection of students and assistants from the school’s Visual Communication Department had the opportunity to explore and reinterpret signature prints. Interactive Scarves is the first of a series of surprising projects originated from their endeavors and achievements during the workshop. The designer Pauline Saglio has developed a three-pieced installation that proposes an innovative and poetic way to discover a scarf. The colors, shapes and compositions of each Emilio Pucci print are enhanced by light and sound to alter the perception of the iconic object, offering visitors a magical experience that stimulates all of the senses.

LOW RES AWAY is a modular telepresence system of which EURI is the first module. The goal of this work was to extend one of the reflexions of my Bachelor Thesis: the idea that the instantaneity of the Net “makes geography obsolete”. I decided to work on the sound representation of weather data based on simple idiophonic objects. For this first module, I worked on rain data. An app allows the user to define a point to retrieve weather data from. The EURI then create an abstract sound composition, replicating a distant reality.

During a one week workshop students were asked to develop projects using the Thymio robot. 50 Robots were available. The week began with an introduction to Thymio and its secrets by Prof. Francesco Mondada from EPFL. Students worked then in group with the task to make Thymio(s) write a word, all those words was then put together to form a sentences that you can discover in this movie. Thymio is an affordable educational robot. It provides three main features: a large number of sensors and actuators, an educative interactivity based on light and touch and a programming environment featuring graphical and text programming. Thymio Robot has been developed in a collaboration between the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) and the Ecole Cantonale d'Art de Lausanne (ECAL).

OccultUs is an Oculus Rift installation that immerses the user in the midst of a sensory experience playing on the interpenetration of visual and sound elements from two distinct realities, one tangible and another simulated. I wanted to exploit the technical and artistic potential of Oculus Rift without achieving a purely digital experience. I preferred imagining a hybrid installation to shake the sensory habits of users while questioning their relation to the world.

On the occasion of the 24th edition of the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH), which took place in Geneva from 20th to 24th January 2014, the ECAL/ University of Art & Design Lausanne created, for watchmaker Vacheron Constantin, a special installation named “The Minute Repeater”. This installation is the result of a research work directed at ECAL by Vincent Jacquier, Head of Visual Communication Department, and Alain Bellet, Head of Bachelor Media & Interaction Design. This research, which brings together students from both Bachelor in Media & Interaction Design and Industrial Design, permitted to develop a stand for the watchmaker based in Geneva. Not less than 12 screens reveal the oneiric sense of the Calibre 1731 of Vacheron Constantin. Thank to the animations unveiled on each screen by the magic of magnifying glasses, ECAL proposes its interpretation of this minute repeater movement, known to be the flattest on the market. With this project I wanted to explore the notion of the third dimension, with the desire to try to get out of the usual frame of a flat screen. For this, my work mainly consisted in exploring and experimenting a different device for displaying images, trying to give animations volume in space. The resulting machine works with the rotation of two screens placed back to back, creating a three-dimensional animated sequence that can be seen at 360 degrees. Due to the persistence of vision, the shapes that appear on the screen turn into kinetic light sculptures. Benjamin Muzzin
