Swiss Graphic Design and Typography Revisited Project
Swiss Graphic Design and Typography Revisited

Swiss Graphic Design and Typography Revisited The research project Swiss Graphic Design and Typography Revisited is divided into three sub-projects: ‘Principles of Education , ‘Networks of Practice and ‘Strategies of Dissemination . This three-year project is the biggest research collaboration established in the design field since the SNSF began its activities. Swiss graphic design and typography are representative of Swiss culture, but have themselves also had an impact on this country s national identity. In the SNSF project Swiss Graphic Design and Typography Revisited, seven universities engage in joint research into the status of Swiss graphic design from today s perspective. Coordinated by the Bern University of the Arts, researchers of the universities of applied sciences from Basel, Geneva, Lausanne, Lugano, and Zurich, as well as from the University of Bern are participating. In the three sub-projects, mixed groups of researchers from the different institutions investigate into different aspects of Swiss graphic design – its teaching, its networks and its forms of publication. The result is a critical contribution to our understanding of the emergence and current self-perception of Swiss graphic design and typography. Above and beyond this, the project helps to consolidate ‘design history as a field of research and practice in Switzerland, and provides new, relevant findings for the international scholarly discourse on visual communication.Main applicantsHKB – Haute école des arts de Berne Arne Scheuermann Michael Renner Sarah Owens Peter J. ECAL x MEHARI EDEN at Design Parade Festival Event
ECAL x MEHARI EDEN at Design Parade Festival

ECAL x MEHARI EDEN at Design Parade Festival,25–27.06.2021,Villa Noailles, Hyères On the occasion of the Design Parade Festival in Hyères from 25 to 27 June 2021, ECAL presents the "ECAL x MEHARI EDEN" project. The 2CV Méhari Club Cassis has developed an electric version of the iconic Citroën released in 1968: the EDEN. From its inception, this car was designed for summer sports and leisure activity. Our current renewed interest in outdoor activities together with electric technology makes this car particularly attractive. With this in mind, the 2nd-year Bachelor students in Industrial Design at ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne, under the direction of Stéphane Halmaï-Voisard, Head of Programme, and designer Elric Petit, showcase a series of accessories for tomorrow s electric Méhari. A genuine “LEGO car”, the Méhari lent itself perfectly to being reinvented by ECAL s students: a steering wheel with a built-in Bluetooth speaker, a rowboat doubling as a roof for the ride towards your favourite boating spot, practical surfboard and bike racks, a ready-to-use picnic set hidden in the tailgate, a waterproof roof cover made from banana plants, or the backrest of the rear seat that converts into a side table are just some of products on display. After a stopover in Lausanne at the hands of the students, the EDEN returns to its stamping ground equipped with its new functions and heads for Villa Noailles for the 15thDesign Parade Festival. From 28 June, the car and its accessories will be on display in the showroom of the 2CV Méhari Club in Cassis until 29 October 2021. ----- This project was carried out in partnership with the 2CV Méhari Club Cassis and initiated by Massilia.design and Nathalie Dewez with the valuable support of Bananatex® and the Design Parade Hyères Festival. As part of the Summer University programme of the Board of Higher Education(DGES) – State of Vaud.

"ECAL Digital Market" in the V&A collection Event
"ECAL Digital Market" in the V&A collection

"ECAL Digital Market" in the V&A collection,21.06.2021,Victoria and Albert Museum, London The Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) – the world s leading museum of art, design and performance based in London – presents  Design 1900 – Now, a new permanent gallery exploring how design shapes and is shaped by how we live, work, travel, communicate and consume. As part of the gallery, new acquisitions will go on display, including the ECAL Digital Market  project by ECAL. Opening 19 June 2021, the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) – the world s leading museum of art, design and performance based in London – presents Design 1900 – Now, a new permanent gallery exploring how design shapes and is shaped by how we live, work, travel, communicate and consume. Housed within the museum s former 20th Century Gallery, this newly curated space brings together leading design objects alongside the first redisplay of V&A s celebrated "Rapid Response Collecting" programme since its founding in 2014. As part of the gallery, new acquisitions will go on display, including the ECAL Digital Market project by ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne. “We are delighted to bring the ECAL Digital Market project into the V&As collection of digital and product design,” says Corinna Gardner, Senior Curator of Design and Digital at the V&A. “We have an established history of acquiring 3D printed designs and this project has the ability to speak to the future of this exciting discipline.” In partnership with the 3D printing company Formlabs, the idea of this project is to present digital manufacturing as an industrial production tool thanks to a print farm composed of numerous machines printing the same pieces simultaneously. Imagined by Camille Blin, Head of the Master Product Design, and Christophe Guberan, ECAL tutor, ECAL Digital Market offers functional and well-designed everyday objects, created by Master Product Design students as well as by a selection of ECAL-related designers (faculty members and alumni). Digital files of the objects can also be purchased online: www.ecal-digital-market.ch As part of the “Automation & Labour” thematic within the exhibition at the V&A, ECAL Digital Market was initially created for the Milan Design Week 2018. After its success in Italy, the project was presented at the Vitra Design Museum in Weil am Rhein, at CIBONE Tokyo and already at the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) in London. “We first brought this project to the V&A as part part of a London Design Festival display,” says Johanna Agerman Ross, Curator of Furniture and Product Design at the V&A. “It s great to see the work of both early career and established designers now joining the collection and fitting that it s now featured in the new Design 1900-Now gallery.” For ECAL Director Alexis Georgacopoulos: “It is very rewarding for both teachers and students to see their work become part of such a prestigious museum collection. It confirms us in our choices and motivates us to push the boundaries even further.“ Victoria and Albert Museum Cromwell Road London, SW7 2RL www.vam.ac.uk

The Sources of Jan Tschichold’s The New Typography Project
The Sources of Jan Tschichold’s The New Typography

The Sources of Jan Tschichold s The New Typography Jan Tschichold s essay Die neue Typographie (The New Typography, 1928) is a game-changing book, acclaimed as the curtain raiser of modern graphic design. While it takes the form of a critical essay and an operative manual, its sources have been understudied because of their difficult identification. This project aims to reconstruct the body of sources that Tschichold drew on to understand the broader cultural context of the book, through an international conference on its impact and a travelling exhibition. The year 2018 marked the 90th anniversary of the publication of Jan Tschichold s Die neue Typographie (The New Typography). After almost a century, Tschichold s game-changing book, together with the typographic movement that stemmed from it, still attracts the interest and curiosity of graphic design historians and practitioners. The book has entered the historiographical canon and its appeal has not faded. Yet, The New Typography is a victim of its own success: it enjoys the benefits of canonisation, while suffering some side effects. Having reached an almost mythical status, The New Typography is often taken for granted and rarely questioned or closely scrutinised. This paradox is the starting point of the present research project. Jan Tschichold (Leipzig 1902 – Locarno 1974) was a German-born, Swiss-naturalised typographer, type and book designer, teacher, typography theorist and critic. In the 1920s he became one of the leaders of the New Typography movement. His conversion to the Modernist cause was mediated by the Bauhaus lesson. This was learnt first through a visit to the Bauhaus exhibition in Weimar in the summer of 1923, and encouraged in the following years through acquaintance and friendship with key exponents of the Modernist movement such as László Moholy-Nagy and El Lissitzky. With the Nazis rise to power in 1933, Tschichold escaped Germany and took refuge in Switzerland, where he spent the rest of his life with the exception of two stays in England, in 1937 and between 1947 and 1949. Published in Berlin in 1928, Tschichold s The New Typography is a manifesto. It follows an earlier statement published in October 1925 in a special issue of the trade magazine Typographische Mitteilungen, entitled “Elementare Typographie.” It was intended as a textbook for graphic designers, printers, typesetters and typographers. The term “New Typography” was first used by László Moholy-Nagy in the Bauhaus exhibition catalogue of 1923. The New Typography, also known as “elementary” or “functional” typography, is the manifestation of Modernism in graphic design and printed communication. Its rules included the privilege for sans-serif typefaces, non-centred page layouts, photography and photomontage, standardised paper sizes, and the active use of white space. After the war, Tschichold gradually distanced himself from the New Typography. He condemned the rigidity of the movement from both a political-moral and a strictly typo- graphical perspective. The research project relies on the hypothesis that, despite being broadly considered a pivotal and game-changing book that paved the way to modern graphic design, The New Typography deserves further and closer scrutiny. Building on the hypothesis that bibliographic sources are among the so-far overlooked and neglected aspects of The New Typography which are waiting to be identified, discussed and contextualised, the research project employs them as a means to open the black box in which Tschichold s book has been kept until now. Once the bibliographical references (books, magazines, grey literature) have been identified, the project investigates what they can tell us about the lineage in which The New Typography was rooted and the kind of discourses and networks it stemmed from. The focus on the sources aims to provide a more complex alternative to the worn-out rhetoric of the “pioneers” of graphic design.Main applicantECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne Matthieu Cortat Davide FornariResearch teamChiara Barbieri Martin SøbergPeriodMay 2019 – June 2021Supported byECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne HES–SO, Fonds stratégique RCDAVDisseminationWebsite die-neue-bibliographie.ch Conference Jan Tschichold s The New Typography: Its Roots and Impact on National Scenes, 26 April 2023, ECAL/École cantonale d art de Lausanne

ECAL Master Fine Arts Symposium,23.03.2021,Online, Zoom ECAL Master Fine Arts Symposium: "Frantz Fanon s Critical Legacy : From the Alienation of the Individual to the Emancipation of Practices" Psychiatrist, essayist, theorist, and Algerian independence activist, Frantz Fanon (born in Fort-de-France in 1925, died in Bethesda in 1961) is a major figure of anti-colonial theory. From the decolonisation of the self, developed in "Black Skin, White Masks", to the use of violence in "The Wretched of The Earth", he fought against the conditions of a subaltern existence to go beyond race and colonial systems. The symposium seeks to open a conversational space, taking up Fanon s attitude of refusal to consider contemporary art practices, structures, and theories. In an effort to question the structures of contemporary society and the artistic field, lecturers share tools to become “conscious of [our] unconscious”, asking if the consciousness of structures instigates a renewal of thoughts and forms. The three conversation sessions are oriented around theories (counter-narratives), practices (regarding artists production), and means of action (by creating spaces, time and methodologies). 10:15am Introduction Stéphanie Moisdon, Head of Master Fine Arts 10:30am – 12pm Counter-narratives • Slavs and Tatars, artists collective 1:30pm – 3:30pm The Politics of Images • Noémi Michel, senior lecturer and researcher in Political Theory, UNIGE • Deborah Joyce Holman, artist and curator, founder of the art space 1.1, associate director at Auto Italia 4pm – 6pm Reparation and Means of Action • Kader Attia, artist and founder of La Colonie • Françoise Vergès, political scientist and feminist activist, founder of the association “Décoloniser les arts”. Words form language – Typography forms meaning Project
Words form language – Typography forms meaning

Words form language – Typography forms meaning This research focusses on ways explored in typography to use letters as means of expression in order to emphasize the semantic, phonetic or visual qualities of language. Even though the typographer s work conventionally is to layout a given text in the most readable or accessible way, to guarantee the least interference possible between the text and the reader, there is a task beyond that: Typographers may put forward the distinct qualities and ideas of a text by translating it into a coherent visual form, a form that communicates a specific idea. As such typography is concerned with the meaning of words and their arrangement within a given surface. This research focusses on ways explored in typography to use letters as means of expression in order to emphasize the semantic, phonetic or visual qualities of language. From the liberated language of the Futurists to the experiments of the Dadaists, and the “New Typography” in the 1920s and into the heyday of Swiss modernist typography, we have seen a constant investigation into experimental uses of typography. But when speaking of typographic design and its influence on language, the voice of the concrete poets is often overlooked. As a poetic movement that emerged in the beginning of the 1950s in several European countries and South America, concrete poetry established itself internationally before fading into oblivion by the end of the1970s. This research tries to contextualize concrete poetry within the field of typography with a particular focus on the work of Swiss-Bolivian poet Eugen Gomringer, one of the key figures of the movement.Main applicantECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne (project leader)Research team (researcher) (researcher) (supervisor)PeriodNovember 2017 – March 2021Supported byECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne DNP Foundation for Cultural Promotion (Graphic Culture Research Grant) Swiss Design Network (Workshop Grant)DisseminationConferences January 29, 2020: Launch of the series Visual archives, with Giliane Cachin, Davide Fornari, Sarah Klein, Robert Lzicar, Simon Mager, Andrea Wiegelmann, Zurich, Never Stop Reading. HERE AND THERE Project
HERE AND THERE

HERE AND THERE A new educational model for a post-pandemic world The global pandemic has forever changed how we work, learn and play, making virtual communication the primary form of human interaction. Here and There is a new digital pedagogy that enables students to create networked physical interfaces with limited material resources and tools, while being away and stripped from a traditional in-person studio and workshop setting. Initiated during a week-long workshop in Cambridge (USA) in March 2020, it brought together students in Bachelor Media & Interaction Design from ECAL and students from MIT s Undergraduate Design Minor and Bachelor of Science in Art and Design programs. During the 2020 spring quarantine, a series of open source software and hardware tools were developed to allow students to build electronic objects from simple and readily available materials. These objects were then dynamically routed and connected to each other to physically augment video chatting and to allow students to extend their virtual reach into each other s tangible spaces. For the first phase of this project, students had to imagine, design and implement two interfaces, whose design and behavior allowed and suggested a new form of communication between two people, in two separate places. Notions of remote presence, simultaneous actions, shared experience and telepresence were explored, fundamentally expanding the ways through which we interact and communicate. Open to other academic institutions and the public at large, we plan to continue improving the software routing interface, the techniques for documentation and sharing prototypes, as well as the remote interfaces that we hope will help foster a more human and connected post-pandemic world. Furniture under pressure Project
Furniture under pressure

Furniture under pressure The potential of shape memory materials in furniture design. In response to the climatic, technical and aesthetic challenges posed in the field of industrial design by the transportation of goods, the Furniture under pressure project exhaustively investigates the possibilities of flat-packing offered by materials capable of occupying a fraction of their volume and then reconfiguring themselves in one piece, without mechanical assembly. This research-creation focuses on a specific case study, the chair. Over the last decade, the rapid development of new communication technologies has brought consumers and sellers much closer together. Physical sales outlets are constantly decreasing while online sales are increasing. Although still relatively unaffected by this change, furniture sales are no exception. In view of this development, thinking in terms of objects occupying as little space as possible for a time – known as flat-packing or flat-shipping – is of interest in terms of logistics and transport. By favouring an empirical approach to design research, focused on the use of the intrinsic properties of innovative materials rather than on the elaboration of complex mechanisms or assemblies, Furniture under pressure aims to bring to light a type of solution that is radically different from the DIY model of furniture, exemplified by IKEA. Indeed, the aim is to experimentally evaluate the opportunities offered by "smart" materials capable of reconfiguring themselves, under certain conditions, into a state occupying a fraction of their initial volume, and then recovering it, whether due to their natural compressibility (sponges, synthetic foams, rubber), their shape memory properties (metal alloys, polymers) or their ability to fold, whether naturally (fabric, paper) or through engineering work (folding, CNC cutting and milling, 3D printing). Inspired by Gaetano Pesce s famous Up5 armchair, the aim of the Furniture under pressure project is to identify and select a large number of materials with potential for producing a seat that can be transported in a small volume and return to its original shape once unpacked. More advanced and concrete exploration of the characteristics and possibilities of these materials will lead to the identification of at least five concrete candidates for real implementable production, from which prototype seats will be developed and their compression, packaging and expansion tested and documented. The prototypes will have to meet a specific objective: they will have to be able to be delivered in a standard Post Office box and installed in one piece without manual assembly of different parts. At the same time, the knowledge gathered will be shared through an online catalogue presenting the materials studied and their properties, as well as the results of the tests carried out. The inventory will constitute a virtual material library for use by designers.Main applicantsECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne (project leader)Research Team (researcher) (researcher) (designer-researcher) (designer-researcher) (designer-researcher) Florian Fischbacher (head of communication) (graphic designer) (photographer/videographer) (research assistant)Periodfebruary 2021 – november 2022 Supported byECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne Strategic Funds HES-SO (RCDAV)Lecturers and researchersJamie Paik Mariana Popescu Skylar TibbitsStudents1st-year MA students in Product Design, ECAL, class of 2020-2021

The Emergence of Video Art in Europe (1960–1980): history, theory, sources and archives. Project
The Emergence of Video Art in Europe (1960–1980): history, theory, sources and archives.

The Emergence of Video Art in Europe (1960–1980): history, theory, sources and archives. To date, there is no European-wide history of video art. It is this gap that the present research programme proposes to fill. Firstly by gathering data on the artists, the works and the events that enabled the emergence of this new artistic practice in the 1960s, or that were important in its development in the following years in Europe, and by bringing to light specific national conditions of production and distribution. This programme is based on an initial mapping of video art on a European scale undertaken between 2016 and 2020 thanks to the organisation of research seminars at the Bibliothèque nationale de France (BnF), the Institut d histoire de l art in Paris (INHA) and ECAL in partnership with the Université Paris 8. This first research programme was jointly funded by the Arts H2-H laboratory of excellence and then ESTHC, with ECAL and the BnF as partners. This indexing should be continued in many other regions with the aim of transnational rewriting. The objective of the research project is twofold. On the one hand, it aims to re-evaluate continental production, to take the measure of its richness and variety, and to identify a European identity – mixed, plural, open, but nevertheless forming a cultural whole – in the practice of video art. On the other hand, the aim is to rewrite the history of this medium on an international scale, counterbalancing the America-centric character of the specialised literature on the subject in order to draw other topographies, which also include Japan or South America, with Europe constituting a node within a wider network. In order to carry out this project to renew the approach to video art, both historiographically and theoretically, we are relying on the network of some fifty national and international specialists, researchers, archive holders, artists, and witnesses that the previous programme enabled us to establish. By questioning the medium of video, the aim is also to contribute to the creation of an archaeology of new media in Europe through a series of publications and an exhibition. Automated Photography Project
Automated Photography

Automated Photography The Automated Photography research project (2019–2021) is conducted by Milo Keller in the framework of the MA in Photography at ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne. It is a continuation of the research project Augmented Photography, equally conducted at ECAL (2016–2017), which aimed to question the mutability of the digital image, transformed both in its physical materiality and in its virtual expression. For the past twenty years, many photographers have been integrating images produced autonomously by machines into their work. We are now witnessing a paradigm shift in the process of creating photography. From photographic capture in the strict sense we move towards practices involving appropriation, automated and computational processes: a phenomenon which reflects a conception of space that is increasingly less built on the equivalence between the human eye and the machine. The Automated Photography research project (2019–2021) is conducted by Milo Keller in the framework of the MA in Photography at ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne. It is a continuation of the research project Augmented Photography, equally conducted at ECAL (2016–2017), which aimed to question the mutability of the digital image, transformed both in its physical materiality and in its virtual expression. Automated Photography focuses on a specific aspect of these changes, which are omnipresent in contemporary visual culture: the automation of capture systems (smartphones, lidar, UAVs, satellites, space probes), the automation of image processing (machine vision analysis, facial recognition), and the increasing automation of image production and post-production (CGI, photogrammetry, artificial intelligence). Automated Photography has a dual objective. On the one hand, it plans to develop a critical theory of the automated image, in order to confront the students of the MA in Photography with its multiple implications (social, political, technical and aesthetic). On the other hand, it proposes to respond to the profound changes in the photographic profession, which must constantly adapt to technological developments. By combining an analytical and a theoretical perspective with considerations resulting from the practical experiences with these technical devices, the project aims to take advantage of the crossroads of these different fields. The synthesis is based on a practical process by applying these technologies, on an aesthetic outlook by analysing the visual qualities of these devices and their creative potential, and on a theoretical approach by assessing the practical results in their cultural, social and political context.Main applicantECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne (project leader)Research team (researcher) (researcher) (research assistant) (research assistant) (graphic designer)Visiting lecturersMarco de Mutiis Simone C. Tofu To-Go Project
Tofu To-Go

Evelyn Yu-Ying Wu – Tofu To-Go The project consists of using quality Swiss soybeans and to make tofu appealing to Europeans. Tofu is a great source of protein. However, tofu products are often presented as large blocks swimming in liquid, which confuses people about how to consume them. Also, most people do not know that they can eat tofu cold. The “Tofu To-Go” project features a new type of tofu inspired by traditional cheese that is made entirely from soybeans. The snack portion of tofu is wrapped with soy string and covered with soy wax, which makes it easier and more hygienic to eat. “Tofu To-Go” is a snack for both adults and children. uyingwu@gmail.com https://evelynyuyingwu.com

Expanding on a moment of overwhelming climax, the scope of our imagination is put to the test. The old world is dying and the new world is struggling to be born. Now is the time of monsters.

Flip-Flap Project
Flip-Flap

Theo Luvisotto – Flip-Flap It is essential to have the opportunity to elevate oneself during childhood, to be able to educate oneself through the discovery of life but also to physically gain height to participate in the activities of grown-ups. “Flip-Flap” is a children s chair with a backrest that can be flipped down to form a stepladder. It enables children to focus on a personal activity but also to gain autonomy, discover new places and rise up to adult height to take part in everyday tasks such as preparing a meal or developing a project at the table.

Strangers Project
Strangers

Nora Longatti – Strangers A young woman challenges the daily grind with an unusual habit: getting in touch with strangers. Fiction / 20 mn Synopsis A young woman collapses in the midst of an anonymous city. Strangers go by or bend over her. Strangers is a silent research on resonance in a world of passerbys. Comment An almost silent wide shot opens the film on a gray building, the entrance to number 36, framed by two balconies with sloping umbrellas. At the bottom of the building a form lies, we discover that it is a young woman... when she gets up. The narration repeats itself, slowly, the sets change at the rhythm of the falls, the camera is of a voluntary stability, it films like the witness of an external glance; the carefully chosen settings are graphic, of a beautiful sobriety, playing on a range of cold colors nuanced with some warm notes, the light is natural, everything is clean and simple. This young woman falls - syncope fainting loss of consciousness abandonment? We don t know. She fades away from time for the space of a glance, she melts on the material until she finds herself on the ground, whether it is outside or inside, she collapses gently either with her head resting on a shoulder, or wrapped in arms, or brooded, or embraced, by human beings who, while being delicate, will watch over her until she wakes up, always silent and motionless, they will respect her temporality until she returns to movement. She finds the movement again, falls again, the narration repeats itself, her collapses punctuate the film like the refrain of a sweet lullaby. Hush! Let her fall. Stéphane Lévy, DOP

Le petit bout manquant rencontre le grand O

Fanny Mersmann – Le petit bout manquant rencontre le grand O Film animation, in my artistic work and research, was initiated by my interest in flip-books and children s books throughout art history. Inspired by stories like El Lissitzky s “About 2 Squares” and Niele Toroni s “L Histoire de Lapin Tur”, I decided to work on how to recount a painting or an artistic approach through children s stories.

"USM Design Grant x ECAL" exhibition

"USM Design Grant x ECAL" exhibition,05–14.11.2020,Design Days, Flon, Lausanne For the 4th edition of the USM Design Grant awarded by the USM Foundation, ECAL s Bachelor Industrial Design students, under the direction of Swiss designer Adrien Rovero, were asked to design listening stations that materialise the sound they emit, generating a distinctive multi-sensory experience in the context of a public exhibition. On the occasion of the Design Days, the winners of the grant, Martin Stricker and Theo Luvisotto, present "Infinity", a visual and sound installation that invites the user to enter an infinite space. Visitors can look through an opening and feel the echo of their own voice, while seeing themselves in an infinite reflection. The openings are positioned at different heights, allowing children and adults to interact freely within the structure. The "Bambino" project by Bérengère Bussioz and Clémence Buytaert will also be on display. Thanks to two loudspeakers integrated in the backrest, this chatty bench, installed in outdoor or indoor cultural spaces, whispers sounds or information to visitors. www.designdays.ch www.fondationusm.org

May You Continue to Blossom Project
May You Continue to Blossom

Alexandra Dautel – May You Continue to Blossom « Is it possible to live together as equals far from the known models of our societies? My investigation into a community in Israel, a kibbutz, lies at the crossroads between utopia and dystopia. This was in fact a school for “self-learning”. Totally isolated, talking about the past there was forbidden. However, utopia hides many secrets, or at least was hiding many. This group of friends who left Jerusalem to settle in the Negev desert followed a man, “a guru, leader, servant, older brother, teacher, friend, lover…”. It is still difficult at this time to define his exact role.»

How to Hide, Being Present,

Janis Gildein – How to Hide, Being Present, Published between 1943 and 1967, “Der Kreis” was one of the first gay magazines in Switzerland, whose network grew internationally. As an editorial platform it developed a position and a visual language for the gay community. A contemporary look at the magazine raises questions about the origins of queer culture and its relationship with notions of visibility, i.e. being recognisable while remaining hidden. hello@janisgildein.de http://janisgildein.de The research is presented in a book, where two matching typefaces have been drawn: the reinterpretation of a “Scotch” and the translation of its characteristics into a “Grotesk.”

Holy Masculinity

Andréa Uldry – Holy Masculinity Are boys and men ultimately designed and destined to be strong, fighters, heads of households? This anthology addresses and recontextualises what masculinity is, how it has developed and where it stands today. What if we rethought masculinities, since they are indeed manifold? Searching for Kummo Project
Searching for Kummo

Elise Connor – Searching for Kummo A family. The starting point is the colonisation of India. The only records we have are of the English men who settled there. The Indian women, their culture and identity were lost, erased. The only one we have left is called Kummo. When my grandfather Lionel arrived in London, he moved to Southall. This suburb is now known as “Little India”. The streets and signs are a testament to its cultural mix. This book aims to tell the suspended stories of my family and the visual forms they have taken, and sheds light on the women that have been erased by history.

The exhibition of the winning projects and the book will be presented at the Centre de la photographie Genève (CPG) from 27 October to 15 November 2020.
