Floriane Roulin – Petites Bouées

by Floriane Roulin

Over the course of a weekend, Sophie and Mila reunite at their childhood vacation home to prepare their father's wedding. But when an old MiniDV tape resurfaces, its blurred images awaken memories that seemed long forgotten. The two sisters begin to piece together a fragmented childhood, marked by waiting and silence. Moving between past and present, Sophie confronts the anger that still binds her to her father. Through the perspective of these two sisters, Petites Bouées explores the workings of memory, the unspoken truths passed down through generations, and the challenge of coming to terms with a past left unresolved. The MiniDV tape, with its fragile and intimate texture, becomes a space where the past re-emerges in fragments.

Eliane and Laure, recently separated, are preparing to leave the apartment they shared. Eliane is packing her last boxes when she discovers dampness on the living room wall. Refusing to be solely responsible for the damage, she decides to call Laure for help. As the two women are forced to spend these last moments repainting the wall together, buried emotions resurface, marking the final steps toward their goodbye. This film was an opportunity to work on the “behind closed doors” question once again, this time, around a single object: a wall. The actresses' performances and the set design almost single-handedly carried the narrative, making even the slightest interactions with the object more meaningful than any words.

How can one learn to have healthy relationships, on equal terms with the other? With the help of the camera, the filmmaker explores the relational dynamics between him and two close friends, Mar and Christal, through various therapeutic scenarios. In doing so, he confronts his own self-hatred, which turns out to be a tragic attempt to avoid repeating, as musch as possible, his own toxic masculine patterns. From this project, and through the medium of the camera, emerges a reflection on self-love, openness to others, overcoming shame, and the benefits of artistic creation on mental health.

One evening, Gabriel throws a party with his friends to celebrate the conviction of the man who abused him as a child. With Lucien by his side, he turns the party into a flirty dance floor in an attempt to escape his past. Caught between Lucien's gentleness and his own need for desire, Gabriel unwittingly reenacts the confusion between affection and control. Over the course of a single night, Under My Skin explores the intimate repercussions of sexual violence and how it shapes emotional relationships. Through the relationship between Gabriel and Lucien, the film follows a character who can only conceive of his relationships with men through desire, and is confronted with a kind of intimacy he no longer recognizes.

Archive as a Creative Act: The Absolute Cinema of Gregory J. Markopoulos and the Temenos Utopia

with François Bovier

Artists who produce archives from their own work approach archival activity as a creative gesture: here, the archive literally becomes a work of art. In parallel with the “archival impulse” that has run through contemporary art since the 1960s, this research project examines the “performative agency” of archives when they are constituted from “image acts”. The selected corpus is based on an extremely singular case, the cinematographic work of Gregory J. Markopoulos (1928-1992) and the Temenos archives.
