“During the workshop we’ve invented a new web-interaction with the hand and body gesture. The unique gestures found in our daily habits have been combined with mobile touch screen, gyro sensor, web camera and microphones and created new narration in the websites on the screen. As we use specific gestures to express certain feelings, we need to create more sophisticated and diverse user web-interaction. This workshop was the first step of inventing and exploring diverse user interaction and sophisticated web-narration.” Yehwan Song

The Center for Counter-Productive Robotics

MEDIA & INTERACTION DESIGN

The Center for Counter-Productive Robotics

with Thibault Brevet, Marc Dubois

In this day and age, robots are presented as the embodiment of precision, speed and efficiency. And they are: working relentlessly, day and night on factory floors around the world, churning out goods faster than ever. As a consequence their practical use is mostly limited to capitalistic logics expecting return on investment, or academic logics expecting research publications. The Center for Counter-Productive Robotics is an island where these concerns are thrown out of the window, and robots are deliberately approached with failure, laziness and clumsiness in mind. In this way the center develops a more human-centric approach to robotics.

Communication Machines - Workshop by Niklas Roy

with Niklas Roy

During a one week, we investigated the role of devices and protocols in our communication behaviors in order to come up with new communication devices, beyond the smartphone. We started out with some low-tech experiments, where we tried to transmit messages in morse code by pulling on a rope. A subsequent brainstorming session structured our thoughts and knowledge about communication methods, contents, and devices in general. www.niklasroy.com

Machine Learning

MEDIA & INTERACTION DESIGN

Machine Learning

The workshop was an introduction to machine learning and image classification. Students were ask to bring 50 objects each, that we photographed. Those objects have been analyzed and classified by an algorithm which allowed us to place them on the floor in the most organized possible arrangement. Each student worked on a project using the object collection. A few interesting projects were created, such as a physical search engine by key word highlighting the objects on the floor and a gradient of objects type using tracking and image recognition. quasimondo.com
