Teaching the Machine

Workshop with Gene Kogan

This workshop was a hands-on introduction to machine learning with a focus on creating artistic and interactive applications. Machine learning is a field dedicated to teaching computers how to perform tasks given examples and human oversight and has been used by artists, musicians, and designers to add a dimension of machine intelligence and interaction to their work. The students focused on the core algorithms used for discovering patterns in complex multimedia data, including images, sounds, and text. They learned how to use neural networks to create real-time, cross-modal interactions for use in video, installation, live music performance, and physical computing. They were provided a suite of tools and code for clustering, visualizing, and searching through large collections of multimedia. The Center for Counter-Productive Robotics

MEDIA & INTERACTION DESIGN

The Center for Counter-Productive Robotics

Workshop with Thibault Brevet, Marc Dubois

In this day and age, robots are presented as the embodiment of precision, speed and efficiency. And they are: working relentlessly, day and night on factory floors around the world, churning out goods faster than ever. As a consequence their practical use is mostly limited to capitalistic logics expecting return on investment, or academic logics expecting research publications. The Center for Counter-Productive Robotics is an island where these concerns are thrown out of the window, and robots are deliberately approached with failure, laziness and clumsiness in mind. In this way the center develops a more human-centric approach to robotics.

Communication Machines - Workshop by Niklas Roy

MEDIA & INTERACTION DESIGN

Communication Machines - Workshop by Niklas Roy

Workshop with Niklas Roy

During a one week, we investigated the role of devices and protocols in our communication behaviors in order to come up with new communication devices, beyond the smartphone. We started out with some low-tech experiments, where we tried to transmit messages in morse code by pulling on a rope. A subsequent brainstorming session structured our thoughts and knowledge about communication methods, contents, and devices in general. This led to several exceptional and funny ideas for new communication machines which the students realized in different teams during the remaining time of the week. The results were very diverse: - A fully functionning electro-mechanical pigeon post installation invited all students to playfully connect over several floors of the school. - The communication autopilot extended the idea of already available auto-complete functionality into the realm of spoken telephone conversation. - A disco performance explored the challenges of communications via music. - And a color-to-smell translator used sophisticated robotic engineering to reveal a hidden olfactory layer in a set of beautifully designed colorful posters. www.niklasroy.com

Machine Learning

Workshop by 1CVmid

The workshop was an introduction to machine learning and image classification. Students were ask to bring 50 objects each, that we photographed. Those objects have been analyzed and classified by an algorithm which allowed us to place them on the floor in the most organized possible arrangement. Each student worked on a project using the object collection. A few interesting projects were created, such as a physical search engine by key word highlighting the objects on the floor and a gradient of objects type using tracking and image recognition. quasimondo.com

Thymio meets ECAL

Workshop with Alain Bellet

During a one week workshop students were asked to develop projects using the Thymio robot. 50 Robots were available. The week began with an introduction to Thymio and its secrets by Prof. Francesco Mondada from EPFL. Students worked then in group with the task to make Thymio(s) write a word, all those words was then put together to form a sentences that you can discover in this movie. Thymio is an affordable educational robot. It provides three main features: a large number of sensors and actuators, an educative interactivity based on light and touch and a programming environment featuring graphical and text programming. Thymio Robot has been developed in a collaboration between the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) and the Ecole Cantonale d'Art de Lausanne (ECAL).

Botcaves

Botcaves

Workshop with Patrick Keller, Matthew Plummer-Fernandez

Botcaves was a workshop held in November 2014 investigating bots and the relation between their programmed, yet autonomous behaviour (software) and their physicalities (hardware embedded in objects) as well as the potential relation these small situated technologies would maintain with global scale cloud infrastructures. Students designed and developed bots who took part in online activities. In some cases the bots were using electronic sensors as an input, while in other cases they used online data and expressed it using robotics. The final results were presented at the end of the week. The process and the results are documented on the IICloud's blog:  iiclouds.org

Sound production has never been more accessible, it’s now possible to make music on everyday computers, smartphones and tablets. The processes that generate the sounds are invisible inside these black boxes, and the traditional link between the action and the result from acoustic instruments is lost to both the performer and audience. This workshop uses Ototo, a printed circuit board synthesiser developed by Dentaku to which conductive materials and sensors to quickly prototype sound interactions. With this as a starting point we will explore how we can represent sound as a physical processes, and create a large scale music making machine!
