The exhibition Under Your Smell offers a hypnotic and immersive experience in Jean Paul Gaultier's headquarters by imagining new definitions of beauty and body expression. Under the direction of Florence Tétier and Nicolas Coulomb, 3rd year Bachelor Photography students brought to life the brand's iconic perfumes through an immersive photographic experience. In the first season, with the complicity of Claude Emmanuelle Gajan Maull, the young photographers have fluidified the iconic bottles with their gendered silhouettes — Le Mâle, Le Classique, Le Beau and La Belle — in a fresh LGBTQIA+ perspective. With this upcoming season, the project evolves around the Scandal fragrance, with the creation of still lives in which the liquid, dry and organic contrasting textures evoke the essence of the perfume, its bottle design and its complexities. Through staging, the perfumes become the backdrop for stories of transgression and fantastical projections. In addition to monumental fabric prints, giant image-cushions welcome the public to lay down and celebrate gender fluidity and the ever changing definitions of beauty and self expression.

Dedon by nature An initiative of DEDON Studio, Lighting the Future presents a striking array of nature-inspired light concepts by master stu- dents from the prestigious ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne. This innovative digital exhibition opens in January 2023 exclusively on DEDON channels, including a dedicated microsite enhanced by AR tools. DEDON Studio initiated the ECAL collaboration with a challenge to students in the Design for Luxury and Craftsmanship Masters program: Explore our relation to nature through lighting design, drawing inspiration from DEDON’s groundbreaking fiber. Under the supervision of the acclaimed designer Sabine Marcelis and Nicolas Le Moigne, head of the program, students designed, developed and digitally elaborated their concepts over a nine- month period. The results—beautiful, beguiling, thoughtful and engaging—attest to the creative powers of an emerging genera- tion and the enduring attraction of nature to us all.

Regatta Very few sports, or indeed very few human activities, merit the term ‘graceful’ as much as does sculling. Long, streamlined craft cutting the water like a stiletto and leaving barely a ripple are among the most elegant forms of human displacement on earth. And that sense of grace conceals both the incredible power of the oarsman and the arrow-like precision of their craft. L’Epée 1839 harnesses and pays homage to the grace of sculling with La Regatta, a sleek vertical clock invoking the shape of the long thin scull, with both the power (8-day power reserve) and precision of the most elegant of watch sports. Our modern lives are often busy and, at times, even chaotic, La Regatta invokes a sense of peace and calm.

A collection of clever furniture and household accessories to help organise everyday life. Following the method of carefully observing our daily routines to identify unique needs and then creating intuitive and practical products, the Bachelor of Industrial Design students imagined a collection of clever furniture and household accessories to help organise our daily lives, under the guidance of designer Michel Charlot. As an important part of the development of MUJI products is based on detailed photographic studies in people's homes, the students were invited to follow the same process by documenting the spontaneous state of their own homes and other people's environments in order to reveal how they interact with the products, and to identify how the objects are used as direct inspiration for their design.

The 2CV Méhari Club Cassis has developed an electric version of the iconic Citroën released in 1968 : the EDEN. From its inception, this car was designed for summer sports and leisure activity. Our current renewed interest in outdoor activities together with electric technology makes this car particularly attractive. With this in mind, the 2nd-year BA students in Industrial Design, under the direction of Stéphane Halmaï-Voisard, Head of Programme, and designer Elric Petit, showcase a series of accessories for tomorrow’s electric Méhari.

A series of accessories that will make up the electric Mehari of tomorrow. The 2CV Mehari Club Cassis has developed an electric version of the iconic Citroën car released in 1968: the EDEN. On the occasion of the reopening of the Maison de Rousseau et de la Littérature (MRL) in Geneva on April 21, 2021, students of the ECAL/HEAD Master's degree in Cinema are presenting a series of films as part of the Parcours Rousseau, which was designed by the Zurich architect Tristan Kobler of the Holzer Kobler office and co-written by two Rousseau specialists - Martin Rueff and Guillaume Chenevière.

Fans with USB power supply for mobile use, for the Swiss brand Stadler Form. Stadler Form is a Swiss company that produces fans, humidifiers, purifiers and other air treatment devices. For this project, the students in 2nd year Bachelor Industrial Design, directed by designer Christian Spiess, had to make a “personal” fan, equipped with a USB power supply for mobile use. They had to think of new scenarios and contexts where a small fan would be useful. They were free to explore different usage scenarios, materials, etc. other than those currently in the Stadler Form catalog. The projects had to meet Stadler Form’s high standards of industrial design, but also challenge and question their existing products. Earlier this year, Carhartt WIP (for Work in Progress) teamed up with ECAL, inviting Bachelor Photography students to interpret in their own way some of the emblematic pieces of the American clothing brand, which develops its own collections from the original Carhartt work clothes. The students, led by art director Nicolas Poillot, produced an editorial report, which was included in the latest issue of "WIP Magazine" published by Carhartt WIP and some of whose images will be exhibited at the ECAL on the occasion of the launch of this book.

During the retrospective organized by the Hermitage Foundation, photography students from ECAL/École cantonale d'art de Lausanne pay tribute to this little-known artist. Without having seen his works beforehand, they explore his universe through the analysis of reproductions and some biographical elements. Throughout the semester, students delve into the mysteries of Emmenegger's work, pondering what his paintings could reveal under an X-ray scanner or how he would have used photography if given the opportunity. They employ contemporary techniques such as analog and digital photography, video, and 3D software to offer personal and poetic interpretations of his work. Their creations, presented as part of the retrospective, provide fresh perspectives on Emmenegger's oeuvre and invite viewers to discover this mysterious artist through the eyes of ECAL students. For the applied photography course, first year students were challenged with a commission for citizenM hotels. The students created several images following the client's guidelines. A selection of pictures was then printed as postcards and on plexiglas support to decorate the hotel's rooms. Information Mesh is a web platform celebrating the 30th anniversary of the World Wide Web that explores social, technical, cultural and legal facts throughout different interactive timelines. It was initiated in October 2018 during a one week workshop in partnership with swissnex San Francisco, where students visited key partners and began developing the project. The timelines present an overview of Web history, starting with the proposal for hypertext by Tim Berners-Lee at CERN in 1989, initially under the name “Information Mesh.” From this start date, users can then explore 30 years of evolution. infomesh.org

The Italian marble manufacturer that entrusted the project development to ECAL Master of Advanced Studies in Design for Luxury and Craftsmanship with a clock collection for last year’s Milan Design Week, chose to repeat the collaboration to create home accessories for this year’s edition.

lt is with great pleasure that we are presenting a selection of works by students of the Bachelor's degree courses in Photography and Graphic Design, curated by photographer Peter Puklus for Mode Suisse Edition 15. The workshop initiated by Noir Associates and carried out in November 2018, aim to produce the current Mode Suisse campaign through a interdisciplinary business-oriented youth promotion collaboration. The outcome of this workshop was so convincing that the means of communication for both Mode Suisse editions in 2019 will be implemented in cooperation with the ECAL students, beginning with work from Raphaèle Rey, Hugo Plagnard and Théo Barraud. The beginning of this fledgling collaboration is marked by the students' smart approach to meeting the needs of MADE VISIBLE, whose partnership with Mode Suisse is a way of making creativity visible in unexpected ways. Work has already started on the collaboration highlights to be shown at the end of summer 2019, at Mode Suisse Edition 16. Station Lights is a luminary installation specially made for the opening of the Gare du Châble train station. This project is the result of a course led at ECAL/Ecole cantonale d’art de Lausanne by Angelo Benedetto, Vincent Jacquier and Pauline Saglio. The technical development and production was entrusted to SIGMASIX, a studio started by ECAL graduates, who produce interactive installations in Switzerland and the rest of the world. The content displayed on the installation was made by students of the 2nd year Media & Interaction Design Bachelor: Antoine Barras, Maya Bellier, Pablo Bellon, Ivan Chestopaloff, Bastien Claessens, Guillaume Giraud, Léonard Guyot, Evan Kelly, Lisa Kishtoo, Kylan Luginbühl, Alice Nimier, Paul Lëon, Aurélien Pellegrini, Yael Sidler and Diane Thouvenin.

‘There are many known connections between food and medicine but there is one quirky link which has not yet been explored: the culinary art of medical training. Despite all the fancy technologies available to educate doctors today teachers still turn to the kitchen fridge or pantry to train students in the skills of their profession. Grapes are perfect for practicing fragile skin suturing. Neurosurgeons learn how to measure the pres-sure of a robotic drill on eggshells.‘ We collaborated with The Gourmand, London based magazine initiated by art director David Lane.

Pianeta PUCCI, a virtual reality experience realised by Pietro Alberti, proposes a new way of exploring the prints and the colors of the brand. Through the use of virtual reality, the custommer has the opportunity to immerse oneself in a surrealistic interpretation of the Pucci universe - showcasting a deconstructed version of the historic palazzo Pucci, Emilio Pucci heritage headquarters, and its renaissance decor including busts highlighted in the iconic “Emilio Pink”. From Lavaux to the Chablais region of Vaud, the world of wine was reinterpreted for a semester by students in their 2nd year of the Bachelor of Photography programme at ECAL/Ecole cantonale d'art de Lausanne, in collaboration with the Confrérie des Vignerons. Under the guidance of Jonas Marguet, photographer and teacher, the students used clues gathered in the field from the winegrowers. Selected and presented as part of the Festival Images Vevey, Elisa Ribeiro's 'Nuisibles' series sheds light on an unexpected aspect of winegrowing. She paints a gallery of portraits of insects that ravage vines, using a scanning electron microscope. By reappropriating a scientific tool for artistic purposes, she reveals the extraordinary, invisible to the naked eye. This work questions the very foundations of the photographic image, the process of taking the picture being carried out here by means of a beam of electrons. These tiny pests appear like giant monsters, presented in large light boxes that evoke the illumination of microscopic observation. Platform10 is the transformation of a railway and industrial site to a new district entirely dedicated to to culture. The space, some 22,000 square meters, hosts three recognized cultural institutions: the Cantonal Museum of Fine Arts, the Museum of the Elysée and the Museum of design and contemporary applied arts, to a few steps from the station, in the centre of Lausanne . In order to complete this major transformation, Platform 10 launched a competition (by invitation) , in which the 2nd year students took part to design coherent propositions of outdoor (urban) furniture for this new public space.

The skincare, haircare and body products specialist Aesop chose ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne to design two accessories for its brand : an electric essential oil burner and a washbag. In doing so, Aesop clearly showed it cared for smart and sustainable design.

Piguet Galland a confié les vitrines de son agence lausannoise aux étudiants en 3e année Bachelor Arts Visuels de l'ECAL. Un mandat sous forme de concours a été lancé dans le cadre du second semestre 2017 sous l’égide de Denis Savary, professeur, et Stéphane Kropf, responsable de la filière. Le travail d’Iseult Perrault a été sélectionné parmi dix candidats pour inaugurer ce qui va s’apparenter à un cycle de deux interventions artistiques par année. A l’occasion du vernissage le mercredi 21 juin 2017 à 18h, un prix lui sera également remis ainsi qu’à Anouk Tschanz, qui exposera ses œuvres dès novembre.

High-end mechanical clocks manufacture leader in Switzerland L’Epée 1839 is the only Swiss Manufacture specializing in the design and production of high-end mechanical clocks – an art it has been perpetuating for over 175 years. Today, the Manufacture is situated in Delémont in the Swiss Jura, where several skills essential to the production of luxury mechanical clocks are now united under one roof.

To celebrate the anniversary of the iconic "El Primero" movement, a class of second-year photography students set out to explore the world of Zenith. Guided by fashion photographer and teacher Philippe Jarrigeon, the students worked at the Manufacture in Le Locle and in the studios of ECAL in Lausanne to create visuals specifically designed to be exhibited around the world.

This immersive installation created by Pietro Alberti proposes an innovative way to discover an emblematic room of the musée des Arts Décoratifs et du Design in Bordeaux (madd-bordeaux). Thanks to Virtual Reality, the perception of the 15th century’s architecture, gildings and furnitures are constantly changing, giving the spectator, a completely new vision of the space and its antic masterpieces. The musée des Arts Décoratifs et du Design in Bordeaux (madd-bordeaux) paired with ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne for a collaboration that led to an interactive installation in the museum.
