THEY – ECAL x LE CONSORTIUM,27.10.2023–31.03.2024,Dijon The Consortium Museum and ECAL present THEY, the culmination of the research project "The Raving Age. Histories and Figures of Youth" by the Master of Visual Arts. THEY, is not about us. It is the statement of a shortfall, a gap... Given this external perspective, how can we express the condition and creativity of a virtualized collective body? How can we get around the deadlocks of traditional differences, innocence, and primary inventiveness? The THEY exhibition seeks to create a diffracted image of youth – a community without community, thriving in a dissolved, uncertain world where referents move freely, unburdened by hierarchies, and transcending generational and gender constraints. The exhibition delves into the emergence of languages and forms, exploring how the foundations of a lexicon are established, and how a new way of making art, of being “contemporary” comes about. These contemporary perspectives presume acts of ownership, disappearance, ventriloquism, and the emergence of many social, interpersonal, political, and esthetic practices and experiments – always in action and opposing the inertia of walls. THEY thus establishes human maps, a sort of moral fable home to all kinds of affects and relationships of identification and indifference – forms of disappearance, a spectral base which leads us, in a certain way, into these worlds where virtuality reigns. It is a temporary refuge for “wild young people”: dissidents of systems and borders, creators of shapes, bodies, vehicles, and multiplicities, who want life, and not capital, to breed. THEY, is not about us. It is the statement of a shortfall, a gap. Given this external perspective, how can we express the condition and creativity of a virtualized collective body? How can we get around the deadlocks of traditional differences, innocence, and primary inventiveness? Can it be achieved by not doing sociology against a backdrop of existential and esthetic crisis? By freeing ourselves from a senile passion for whatever moves, lives, and rebels? How can we conceive of this transitional creature, unable to solidify in its unfinished forms, and instead very much ready to give in, so to speak, to its own unspecialized and powerful youth, turning away from any destiny and specific environment, and holding on to nothing else but its own immaturity and ignorance? The THEY exhibition is the final chapter of the research project titled “The Raving Age. Histoires et figures de la jeunesse”, directed by Vincent Normand, Philippe Azoury and Shirin Yousefi. This project is an integral part of ECAL s Master s degree in Visual Arts.1 Developed over a two-year period, the program is based on various cross-disciplinary activities including production, analysis and workshops, with many artists, thinkers, writers and students taking part in it. The platform at www.theravingage.com archives a list of all exchanges and conferences in that context. The exhibition mirrors a unique collaborative experience between a museum and an art school. Invited artists and students worked closely together during the various stages of the exhibition process, such as design and communication (Lorenzo Benzoni and Luca Frati), scenographic design with David Douard, a reality TV show directed by Sara Sadik, and even a performative piece by Gabriele Garavaglia. Some of the exhibited pieces were created specifically for this particular occasion, such as those by Julien Ceccaldi, Nicolas Ceccaldi, Mélanie Matranga, Gabriele Garavaglia, Exotourisme (Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster & Perez) and Jill Mulleady. Additional existing works were chosen for their specific resonance with the project. These include pieces by David Douard, Morag Keil, Caroline Poggi & Jonathan Vinel and David Wojnarowicz, a truly influential and dreaded figure of youth. Thanks to Matthijs Erdman, Marion Scemama and to galleries Isabella Bortolozzi, Berlin; Chantal Crousel, Paris; Fitzpatrick, Paris and New Galerie, Paris. BLI × ECAL The collaboration between the ECAL and the BLI touches on contemporary issues that are of particular concern to students at the school: our relationship with minorities and the appropriate way of representing them. For a long time, a paternalistic anthropological attitude was tolerated and even encouraged in the world of photography. Attitudes have changed, and the young artists at the ECAL have developed a relationship of equals with the various communities they have encountered. Creating the images required a language that enabled the students to position themselves in relation to others and to establish protocols in line with their own values and those of the people on the other side of the lens. The images give us a complex, multifaceted panorama of our city s cultural diversity, and show us that encounters and mixes are possible and fruitful. Matthieu Gafsou, photographer and teacher.

LA POSTE × ECAL For the Swiss Post Office, students from ECAL s Bachelor Graphic Design and Bachelor Media & Interaction Design are creating a postage stamp based on artificial intelligence. Thanks to augmented reality, Metascape transports Swiss Post users into an imaginary and poetic universe on the way to a destination that remains elusive. Strange, but not really foreign: that s the unsettling impression given by the design of this special stamp called "Metascape". Using augmented reality technology, this creation, made up of elements that are both familiar and surreal, immerses us in a fantastic world shaped by artificial intelligence. An Instagram filter lets you access the virtual journey simply by scanning the QR code on this exclusive postage stamp. With "Destination" as its theme, this collaboration between ECAL students and Swiss Post initially gave rise to fourteen concepts created through group work. After a pre-selection of five works by a jury made up of members of ECAL, Swiss Post and the Stamp Commission, the "Metascape" project was chosen to move from imagination to reality. Discover below the other pre-selected projects. What s next ?A destination is basically a journey from point A to point B. But what happens during this elapsed time? The idea is to illustrate an epic with a board that would be a pawn s playground. We follow this character as he discovers an unsuspected universe through each environment he crosses, with the aim of satisfying his thirst for discovery of the world. Through the accumulation of collected memories, the character blossoms, constantly searching for his next destination. The filter allows you to move around a deconstructed game board. From one square to the next, we discover a different world in which fictional elements interact and transform. PROJECTION ECAL - LEVIATHAN,25.05.2023, 18:00,IKEA Auditorium, ECAL Filmed on a fishing boat off the coast of Boston, Leviathan pushes the boundaries of what can be filmed. The projection of this documentary that warns of the threats of intensive fishing as much as it reveals the stunning beauty of the ocean s entrails, will be followed by a meeting with its co-director, Verena Paravel. Born on April 21, 1971 in Neuchâtel (CH), Verena Paravel is a French director, artist and anthropologist. She works at the Sensory Ethnography Lab, a research center at Harvard University. Her work is now part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York and has been screened in numerous festivals such as Berlin, Locarno, New York and Toronto. She has notably directed with Lucien Castaing-Taylor, in 2012 Leviathan, an experimental film about industrial fishing in North America, in 2017 Caniba, about and with Issei Sagawa, a Japanese man accused of killing and eating a Dutch student in Paris in 1981, and in 2022 De Humani Corporis Fabrica, a journey to the heart of the body mixing their images with those recorded by doctors. Verena Paravel is a lecturer in the ECAL/HEAD Master of Film Studies. Leviathan Documentary Directed by Lucien Castaing-Taylor, Verena Paravel Written by Lucien Castaing-Taylor, Verena Paravel United States, United Kingdom, France - 2012 - 87 minutes Filmed on an industrial fishing boat, using a dozen small digital cameras, Leviathan is a documentary of incredible formal innovation and a harrowing plunge into the ship s labyrinthine bowels. Almost entirely without dialogue, the film exposes the brutality and bloodiness of the human-nature-machine encounter. Between anthropological observation and abstract cinematic experience, Lucien Castaing-Taylor and Verena Paravel have created a monstrous and sublime audio-visual opus, whose carnage and shadowy setting add up to nothing less than a seaborne nightmare.
Ecal for Schätti ECAL for Schätti is a inspiring collection created by ECAL s Master students in Product Design, under the guidance of Camille Blin, head of the programme, Jörg Boner, designer and Thomas Schätti, co-owner of the company Schätti. In the lighting industry, Schätti is synonymous with high quality manufacture and proven know-how. The brand is driven by a modernist vision and a fresh perspective: “The lighting industry is in upheaval; LED technology is the center of attention. ECAL AT VISIONS DU REEL: Masterclass and films,21–30.04.2023,Théâtre de Marens, Nyon As part of the film festival Visions du Réel (April 21 to 30) in Nyon, Lucrecia Martel will give a masterclass on Tuesday, April 25, organized in partnership with La Cinémathèque suisse. Four films from ECAL Cinema Department students and alumni will also be part of the programmation. MASTERCLASS: LUCRECIA MARTEL Filmmaker and screenwriter Salta, Argentina Tuesday, April 25, 2pm Usine à Gaz 2, Nyon Visions du Réel s guest of honour Lucrecia Martel will give a masterclass, which will explore her body of work and her relationship with reality. A retrospective of her films will also be presented during the edition. Lucrecia Martel gained international fame with her first feature length film La ciénaga (2001), shot in her home region, and has since embodied the resurgence of Argentinian film, both nationally and internationally. The director s filmography, which consists of 4 feature length films and 25 titles in total (including different kinds of projects), has constantly made a mark on her country in a post-dictatorial context, as well as at the most prestigious festivals. Lucrecia Martel s films use a highly sensual cinematographical grammar to examine the existential crisis of the Argentinian middle classes, the inner workings of society and the country s suffocating social mechanism, as well as post-colonial issues. She achieves all this while relentlessly evoking, implicitly, the history of her country and the ghosts that inhabit it. Her attention to detail – particularly to sound, noise and dialogues – and the kaleidoscopic approach of her work are in keeping with a dual tradition that is both oral and adventurous in cinematographical terms, steeped in a joyous cinephilia. Rooted in the filmmaker s very familiar territories and experiences, Lucrecia Martel s body of work borrows from a multitude of genres and offers a rich and fascinating hybridisation of fiction and reality. After Terminal Norte in 2021, she is currently working on new non-fiction feature length film that should be released in 2023. Moderated by Emilie Bujès, artistic director of Visions du Réel and Paolo Moretti, head of ECAL Cinema Department. To do so, he designed a camera device adapted to the guests and their means of transport. These tailor-made objects created a surprising interview setting and highlighted the guests personalities and their passion for their profession. As a follow-up, The Salone Pick-Up is a series of interviews hosted at Milan Furniture Fair and streamed live on Instagram. Designers and curators will be picked-up at Salone del Mobile by Silvio Rebholz to start the travelling interview on their way to Salone Satellite, where a booth awaits them. Once there, predefined questions challenge the guests by asking for their views on how the future generation of designers can meet today s big challenges. ECAL Milano 2023: U.F.O.G.O.,18–23.04.2023,Spazio Orso 16, Milano On the occasion of the Milan Design Week (17-23 April 2023), ECAL presents U.F.O.G.O., an exhibition that provides a solution for a better integration of wind turbines in our landscapes. In 2023, the significant role of renewable energies in tackling the energy crisis is blatant. In this context, wind turbines are once again seen as a promising idea. However, concerns about their environmental and social impact represent a significant obstacle to their deployment: how can we respond to the problem of their visual intrusion in the landscape? ECAL addresses this issue by emphasising the importance of design in the creative process. Convinced that, should design be placed at the heart of the thought process, wind turbines could fit into our landscapes not only sensitively, but beautifully, Master Product Design students present eight innovative projects. In October 2022, sixteen Master students travelled to Fogo Island (Newfoundland, Canada), a particularly windy region whose climate makes it an ideal location for the deployment of environmentally friendly electricity generation devices. In collaboration with the Shorefast Foundation of Fogo Island, the young designers immersed themselves in the landscape and explored ways to meet the needs of the inhabitants, while taking into account logistical imperatives and environmental constraints. Produced in consultation with engineers from HEIG-VD/School of Management and Engineering Vaud, the models integrate the technical, technological and legal principles necessary for their implementation. Through their subtle design, they bring innovative, reality-based solutions, favouring their acceptance by local populations. Depending on the project, the wind turbines respond to existing problems or current needs. EVIND is designed to enable the charging of electric cars. PNEUM, whose structure is actually a greenhouse, supports food production and self-sufficiency. PYRE offers an alternative to expensive imported building materials through 3D printing. WINDSEED is an offshore wind turbine with a structure that supports seaweed farming – a booming economy on the island. Others tell the story of Fogo Island, its long history of fishing industry and its unique architecture. The island is home to old fish processing factories that could become the foundation of RR REUSE, a model that enhances cultural and historical heritage. CLIFFHANGER seeks to approximate the architecture of the island s traditional stilt houses. FOGO FLAGS, decorated with flags and located on the edge of the coastline, positions itself as the symbol of Fogo, providing a first impression for visitors upon their arrival. For air safety reasons, wind turbines can only be white, but FLO bypasses this restriction with a relief texture that features a palette of colours when viewed from the ground, becoming a landmark in the landscape. U.F.O.G.O. is the presentation of these eight prospective but realistic projects, which open new paths and push boundaries. As a media partner of the exhibition, design journal Disegno has presented the research and its results in a publication. In collaboration with the Shorefast Foundation of Fogo Island (Newfoundland, Canada) et la HEIG-VD/School of Engineering and Management. As a media partner of the exhibition, design journal Disegno has presented the research and its results in a publication available at the exhibition site.

Lecture ECAL - Alain Guiraudie,18.04.2023,Auditorium Leenaards, ECAL Invited by ECAL Cinema and Fine Arts departments, the French director and artist Alain Guiraudie will give a lecture on Tuesday April 18, 2023 at 6pm. Born in 1964, Alain Guiraudie grew up in Bournazel, a village in Aveyron where his parents were farmers. After high school, he studied History in Montpellier, but stopped to work and write novels that were not published. Having above all the desire to make films, he directed a first short film, Les héros sont immortels, in 1990, followed by a second and a third. This led him to make longer films, including Du soleil pour les gueux in 2000 and Ce vieux rêve qui bouge in 2001. He has since directed 6 feature films including L Inconnu du lac and Rester vertical. The latest one, Viens je t emmène, was released in March 2022. He has also published two novels with P.O.L.: Ici commence la nuit in 2014 and Rabalaïre in 2021. He will exhibit for the first time at Panorama 2019, then at the Crèvecœur Gallery in Paris, at the Consortium Museum in Dijon and at the Daniel Buccholz Gallery in Berlin in 2023. Moderated by Paolo Moretti, head of the Cinema department and Stéphanie Moisdon, head of Master of Fine Arts.
ECAL MILANO 2023: Junkyard Diving,17–23.04.2023,House of Switzerland, Milano On the occasion of the Milan Design Week (17-23 April 2023), ECAL presents Junkyard Diving at the House of Switzerland. Under the guidance of the designer Philippe Malouin, ECAL s Bachelor students in Industrial Design invite us to question our consumption habits, the role of designers and the world of tomorrow. The shortage of energy and resources that many countries are currently experiencing or anticipating, raises several questions about supply alternatives and ways of limiting consumption. According to studies, the cumulative number of metals to be produced in the coming years would exceed the cumulative amount produced since antiquity to the present day. In the wake of forthcoming legislation on the right to repair products, energy and resource consumption, design, as an innovation discipline, must play a key role. Junkyard Diving questions our consumption habits, as well as the role of designers in the world of tomorrow. "Form follows function" is a maxim attributed to the modernist architect Louis Sullivan. In industrial design, if this statement is sometimes at the heart of reflections, it can also be reversed, in which case the form determines the function through a creative process based on existing elements. During a week-long workshop with designer Philippe Malouin, Bachelor Industrial Design students adopted this latter approach: seeking new functions inspired by forms found in a metal recycling center. Through this process, unexpected associations and discoveries are made, generating a new vocabulary of forms. « With resources dwindling, it is essential to challenge the way we generate new ideas: combining or altering existing forms and elements can lead to new discoveries in product design. Other people s trash can definitely be our creative treasure », says Philippe Malouin. Junkyard Diving highlights the existing - yet under-exploited - opportunities for recycling that design provides. Presented at the House of Switzerland, Junkyard Diving is part of the group exhibition Urgent Legacy, which proposes innovative and sustainable Swiss design responses to the urgent challenges of the present, in collaboration with the Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia and Presence Switzerland.

ECAL Lecture - Brian Roettinger,05.04.2023,Cinema Studio, ECAL Present during the spring semester as part of his ECAL residency at La Becque, designer Brian Roettinger will discuss his practice and his many projects of international scope through an audiovisual and immersive approach on Wednesday, April 5 at 6pm. As a partners at Perron–Roettinger, designer Brian Roettinger has worked on creative projects with some of the world s biggest brands and musicians. Roettinger s work is an uncanny union of punk ideology with a conceptually driven mode of modernist design. He frequently employs architectural strategies such as repetition and structure, while subverting this sense of order by manipulating the production process in unexpected or “wrong” ways (think pulling the sheet out of the printer before it is done). He continues to work with a wide variety of artists and brands (Jay-Z, Florence + The Machine, Mark Ronson, SKKN by Kim, Cartier, ...) taking an holistic approach to the design process from idea to completion. His work is diverse spanning album packaging, publications, branding, campaigns, and product design. He has been nominated for numerous awards included three Art Direction Grammy s for album packaging.

Summer University Finland — ECAL toys with ARTEK Teaming up with iconic Finnish furniture company Artek, Bachelor Industrial Design students, under the guidance of designer Julie Richoz, present a collection of playful objects for children made from salvaged b-quality, rejected and half- finished materials and offcuts. Staying true to the spirit of Artek and its founders, the products promote conscious manufacturing and seek to highlight the natural materials that have gone into producing these designs. The resulting collection made of up-cycled components features a modernist inspired dolls house, a convenient wagon to move toys and other things around, quirky plush toys in the form of fish and sea creatures, a minimalist sledge to enjoy the snowy Lapland winter, a hanging ladder to reach for the stars, mesmerising marble mazes, a tiny theatre for a spontaneous play with your best friends, and a handy clothes rack to help tidy up your children s room after a busy day – to name just a few.During our journey in Finland, students were able to visit multiple manufacturers, craftsmen, designers and cultural landmarks such as: Fiskars scissors factory, Artek main wooded furniture factory, Iittala glassblowing plant, up and coming Vaarnii founder, and several historical buildings from famous architect and designer Alvar Aalto, including his house and studio, to name only a few. In partnership with the iconic finish design brand Artek and the Fiskars Village Art & Design Biennale, the students discovered the bountiful nature that inspires and nurtures Finnish industry and craftsmanship, one of the pillars of contemporary Scandinavian design. This project was made possible with the kind support of the Summer University programme of the Board of Higher Education (DGES) – State of Vaud.RELATED EVENTS

STRAPPAZZON+ECAL Workshop with Strappazzon With the aim of broadening the horizons of graphic design students beyond the media traditionally explored during their training, Sebastian Stappazzon, co-founder of AVNIER – one of today s hottest streetwear brands launched in collaboration with French rapper OrelSan – runs a week-long workshop at ECAL. From the proposals imagined by the students, a capsule collection was born, produced in a limited edition. The entire collection will be presented and on sale at an exclusive event on 15 December 2023 at La Rasude in Lausanne. Under his direction, and with the support of Guy Meldem and the assistance of Inès Barrionuevo, we invited students to work on the creation of a complete outfit, including a cap, tracksuit, t-shirt and socks. In the course of this collaboration, the idea of developing a joint capsule collection between his eponymous brand STRAPPAZZON and ECAL emerged naturally. This initiative enabled Bachelor Graphic Design students to delve into the world of streetwear, learn about textile printing techniques and immerse themselves in a constantly evolving creative sector. The proposals imagined by the students were then carefully selected to create a coherent, surprising capsule collection, perfectly reflecting the zeitgeist. The collection will be produced in a limited edition and will go on sale shortly. The entire collection will be presented and on sale at an event in Lausanne, Switzerland, in early December 2023. REVERSIBLE JACKET 1020 & PANT 1020 are the first pieces in this exclusive collection and are available for pre-order until midnight on Monday, September 25, 2023.
