Dialogue As part of the publishing course taught by Gilles Gavillet and Jonathan Hares, the 3rd year students worked on the layout of dialogue. They began by selecting a dialogue that had potential for visual creation. After identifying the graphic challenges of their subject, they defined an editorial solution. 1968 Now Live, When Politic Became TV Show Edition In the summer of 1968, the American network ABC invited two great intellectual and political figures, William Buckley and Gore Vidal, to debate the presidential election of that year. Without knowing it, it would become the channel with the lowest ratings, the one that changed the future of television debates. 1968 Now Live transcribes the 11 episodes that made up this virulent debate in the manner of a play script. Punctuated by notebooks in which the flow of images from popular culture mingles with political images, the object gives form to this moment when politics became a television show. By Alexis Gargaloni A Conversation about glacial decoy Edition Through a conversation between Trisha Brown and Yvonne Rainer, this edition presents a visual interpretation of the dance piece Glacial Decoy, created in 1979 by choreographer Trisha Brown. The images are taken from the performance at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in May 2009 and the excerpt lasts 1 minute and 47 seconds. In the background of the piece, large black and white images are projected, signed Rauschengerg. Four of them are always visible, moving every 30 seconds to the right. These images of heterogeneous objects and landscapes seem to belong to the same fading world. By Correspondance Edition Correspondence is a re-edition of part of the book Correspondence (1944-1959): Albert Camus / Maria Casarès. The edition gathers several letters that Albert Camus and Maria Casarès exchanged during the years 1944 to 1948. Behind each of the letters are parts of the diaries corresponding to the day they were written. The Japanese binding allows a double reading of these letters; that of the love of the two lovers and that of the historical context at that time. By Soup and Sun flowers: the urgent but delicate art of awakening consciences Edition Soup and Sunflowers emerges from the recent actions of climate activists Just stop Oil within museum institutions. It takes the form of a hybrid catalogue, which presents these different actions of civil disobedience, such as happenings, performances, or other pictorial acts of canvas destruction, already curated and presented in the museum. What is art? How can the museum elevate the debate around the climate emergency? By Agathe BourréeThe Chicago Boys Newspaper A newspaper about a group of Chilean economists trained at the University of Chicago in the 1950s and 1960s who were called the Chicago Boys. They applied Milton Friedman s free market theories to Chile after the military coup of 1973. Their neo-liberal economic policies had a significant impact on the Chilean economy and society, but have also been criticised for their social and economic consequences. Their legacy is controversial and continues to be studied today. By Hugo JauffretPrairie s Tale Edition Navigating between different programmes, the digital painting illustrates the tale Prairie s Tale written by the artist Thilda Bourqui. In it we follow the adventure of the princess Prairie who, in disagreement with the patriarchal values of the castle, will find a new way of life in the forest and in the more-than-human world. Feed Filler - artgenève 2023,26–29.01.2023,Palexpo, Geneva From January 26 to 29, as part of artgenève 2023, Bachelor Fine Arts graduates will present Feed Filler, an installation by the artist Miriam Laura Leonardi. As for music, Bachelor Fine Arts students will be part of the artgenève/musique program. FEED FILLER An in-situ installation where the art market economy becomes the backdrop for works freshly created by Bachelor Fine Arts graduates. A project proposed by Miriam Laura Leonardi. The enlarged manual of a modern art gallery serves as a backdrop for videos, works on paper and sculptural contributions by seven emerging and established artists. While their works are united by the way they step away from reality to conceptualize the illusory worlds that are foreign to us, the gallery-goers "du jour" wear tracksuits that convey a comforting message to the overwhelming crowd of visitors in search of meaning. Graduates: Charly Mirambeau, Gina Proenza, Christian Schulz, Virginie Sistek, Romane de Watteville, Maria Esteves, Kelly Tissot. ARTGENÈVE/MUSIQUE: THE TUNING CEREMONY In the heart of the Music Chamber, a curated space that gathers artworks and sound performances, Bachelor Fine Arts students in collaboration with the Ensemble Contrechamps present an exhibition driven by sound, the pieces positioned around a "tuning ceremony". This game of call and response between the works and the direct, recorded, electronic or analogical sound, extends the exhibition towards a polyphonic quest that unfolds at different moments of the day. Students: Anna Cocimarov, Caroline Bischoff, Camille Dudan, Axel Mattart, Emma Blanc-Germser, Julie Wuhrmann, Romain Rochat, Achille Meier, Tom Grbic, Marsaili Venus Haas.

L or bleu,20.01–28.02.2023,Docks, Lausanne From January 20 to February 28, 2023, Les Docks in Lausanne will host the exhibition L or bleu, a project realized by the students of the Foundation Year - Photography Option at ECAL. Opening : Thursday, January 19 at 6:30 pm. This project developed by students in Foundation Year - Photography at ECAL, under the direction of photographer Nicolas Haeni, invites us to question the symbolism of water. Since the dawn of time, this blue gold has intrigued and inspired, giving rise to interpretations which, even today, and perhaps even more than ever, inhabit literature, fine arts and performing arts. Based on the quote by astrophysicist Hubert Reeves "AT THE COSMIC SCALE, LIQUID WATER IS RARER THAN GOLD", the young photographers propose their personal and individual vision, exploring different fields of photography: still life, portrait, architecture or staging. THE SECRET LIFE OF OBJECTS During the 2nd year Bachelor of Graphic Design visual identity course, students had to choose an object allowing them to perform an action and then bypass its basic function. Following this, the students created a fictitious company or a creator behind this object allowing them to develop a visual identity concept as well as define the recurring elements of the identity in order to establish a modular graphic system that can be applied to a multitude of different media, fixed and animated. FUTURE IS BELOW Edition & Poster The exhibition Future Is Below was born from the collaboration of four artists around a single object: the jigsaw blade. Each artist was free to choose how he or she would use it, leaving an almost unlimited space of possibility. The origin of the exhibition embodies a way of thinking about the underlying themes of ecology and the consequences of the mass of waste produced today by human beings through an object of manufacture. Is a future possible thanks to recovery? By Master Laser Edition, Animation & Poster Fictitious visual identity for the company Master. It is a company specialized in the sale of high-end precision lasers. It offers a wide range of products adapted to all levels of use, whether for amateurs or professionals. The identity is symbolized by a variable font, which perfectly represents the extent of Master s skills. The two axes of the typography are also significant: they represent the precision and the robustness of the proposed lasers. By 10 – 4 Edition, Animation & Poster Why work from 9 to 5 when you can work from 10 to 4? That s the mantra of ten to four, a brand of accessories made from office objects that advocates non-productivity at work. The edition is presented as a guide to mastering the art of procrastination and can be read during lunch break or on the subway, before work, as a preamble to the day ahead. By Mineral grinding engineering Edition, Animation & Poster Mineral Grinding Engineering is a fictional company. It manufactures machines to grind the hardest minerals on the planet in order to make objects useful to people s daily lives. With this project, I tell the story of the realization and use of the PM-23 machine by the company s scientists through the creation of a visual identity. The work is oriented towards a scientific visual, with images of the study, archives, data, diagrams and elements that tell the story of the research. By Clay Edition, Animation & Poster Clay is a project based on the concept of DIY and conservation through skin care masks. Clay is a creator of homemade cosmetics that promotes sustainability, authenticity, less is more and independence. By KAOS-3 Poster & Animation The KAOS-3 space is located underground: it is a club for those who want a loud, mathematically confusing, fluid, dirty experience. The identity project wants to look at the main tools for creating the performances offered in the club: the Korg Kaossilators (KO-1), that is, dynamic phrase synthesizers, which produce a different sound or note every time you touch the pad with a finger. The visual identity of the KAOS-3 club explores music, sound, visuals and modularity through a code that recreates random images through the use of synthesizer touch screens combined with sound. By

Summer University Finland — ECAL toys with ARTEK Teaming up with iconic Finnish furniture company Artek, Bachelor Industrial Design students, under the guidance of designer Julie Richoz, present a collection of playful objects for children made from salvaged b-quality, rejected and half- finished materials and offcuts. Staying true to the spirit of Artek and its founders, the products promote conscious manufacturing and seek to highlight the natural materials that have gone into producing these designs. The resulting collection made of up-cycled components features a modernist inspired dolls house, a convenient wagon to move toys and other things around, quirky plush toys in the form of fish and sea creatures, a minimalist sledge to enjoy the snowy Lapland winter, a hanging ladder to reach for the stars, mesmerising marble mazes, a tiny theatre for a spontaneous play with your best friends, and a handy clothes rack to help tidy up your children s room after a busy day – to name just a few.During our journey in Finland, students were able to visit multiple manufacturers, craftsmen, designers and cultural landmarks such as: Fiskars scissors factory, Artek main wooded furniture factory, Iittala glassblowing plant, up and coming Vaarnii founder, and several historical buildings from famous architect and designer Alvar Aalto, including his house and studio, to name only a few. In partnership with the iconic finish design brand Artek and the Fiskars Village Art & Design Biennale, the students discovered the bountiful nature that inspires and nurtures Finnish industry and craftsmanship, one of the pillars of contemporary Scandinavian design. This project was made possible with the kind support of the Summer University programme of the Board of Higher Education (DGES) – State of Vaud.RELATED EVENTS

COLLABORATION WITH LA PRAIRIE 2021 The packaging of tomorrow La Prairie pursues its partnership with ECAL students to conceptualise the packaging of the tomorrow. Through this partnership with the renowned Swiss University in Art and Design, La Prairie nurtures creativity and promotes emerging talents shaping the future of smart design. Under the creative leadership of designers Stefano Panterotto et Alexis Tourron (Panter&Tourron), six students developed their vision of the luxury packaging using La Prairie s Skin Caviar Luxe Cream folding box as their starting point. The students were invited to re-imagine the secondary packaging using a more sustainable approach and explore the possibilities that innovative materials, design techniques and technology offered while preserving the elevated product experience, inherent to the brand. This creative and diverse approach to finding viable solutions enhances the values of creativity and craftsmanship so essential to La Prairie. It ignites the House s innovative mindset by further exploring technologies, materiality and shapes that are available today, for a better tomorrow. Among the six projects developed, the nomadic kit concept, proposed by UAE student Salman Rouhani, was chosen for production. The different versions of this travel kit, adapted to La Prairie s product ranges, are now available for sale.

TalkCity The students worked on creating a typographic 3D environment in a web browser. Using the words extracted from a dialogue, a sequence is illustrated in a synchronised way on two screens. Marriage Story A heated dialogue between a couple from the movie “Marriage story” is illustrated. Each of the towers represents the words spoken and will be progressively destroyed as the exchanges continue. By Jérémie Kursner and Alexandre Gambarini Playground This project illustrates the song “Alphabet Boy” from two perspectives: being tall and being tiny. Following one or the other angle, the viewer discovers the landscape created by the words. By Ayten Gönel and Sasha Iatsenia Growing city This project comically illustrates a dialogue between two voices who discover that a building is created with each word spoken. By Julie Turin and Charlotte Pralong mr. Robot In this dialogue from the series “Mr Robot”, the words spoken by each of the characters scroll and then gradually accumulate on the screen of the other speaker. By Mélanie Martin and Odran Jobin Interstellar Based on a dialogue from the movie “Interstellar”, this group worked on 3 smartphone screens. A matrix allows to make a transition between the different letters of the pronounced words. By Viktor Gagné and Théo Déchanez

The Pandora Box This workshop offers participants a unique opportunity to delve into narratives through the lens of imagery and memory. Initially, they will engage with an archive of images, selecting a story from the past to dissect visually. This analytical phase sets the stage for a more personal exploration as participants transition to the next stage, where they will replace a character in the archive with themselves through self-portraiture. Central to the workshop is an interrogation of the medium of photography and the concept of the archive. Through guided discussions, participants will come to understand photography not just as a means of capturing moments but also as a form of witness to history. They will explore their roles as both collectors and editors of images, reflecting on the nuances of image production and consumption. Utilizing personal archives as a springboard for creativity and reflection, participants will gain insight into the complexities of visual storytelling. By examining images analytically and conceptually, they will develop a deeper understanding of their role in shaping narratives. Ultimately, the workshop aims to empower participants to create their own stories, fostering a deeper connection to both the past and their own identities through the powerful tool of photography.

Caterina Valletta – Up & Down Since ancient times, cutlery has always featured in light-hearted, shared moments around the dining room table. Yet, it has always been considered as purely functional, designed for savouring and appreciating dishes and very often relegated to the background, unlike plates and glasses, as we forget its importance from an aesthetic point of view. Up & Down offers to revisit cutlery by creating a non-traditional set with a strong character. Starting with a 2D cut-out on a steel plate, a small detail raises the cutlery so that it does not touch the surface, thus solving a problem that is both functional and aesthetic.

Official launch of the Marsotto LAB collection,21.10–23.12.2022,SPBH Space, Milan From 21 October to 23 December 2022, ECAL and more specifically the students of the Master of Advanced Studies in Design for Luxury and Craftsmanship will unveil the result of their latest collaboration with the Italian brand Marsotto LAB and officially launch the collection of the same name, composed of a selection of accessories created between 2018 and today through collaborations with international designers. Following the growing success of Marsotto Edizioni, the Italian marble company now presents Marsotto LAB, a new platform geared towards the production of accessories imagined by young designers and students from art and design schools. Since the creation of this platform, the family company has called on ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne and more specifically on the students of the Masters of Advanced Studies in Design for Luxury and Craftsmanship to work on a collection of everyday objects. These various collaborations, led successively by Spanish designer Jaime Hayon, French designer Pierre Charpin, and Slovakian designer Tomáš Král, have resulted in the production of clocks and other home accessories with shapes that are as elegant as they are sculptural. Although several pieces have already been exhibited around the world, the aim of this exhibition is to showcase the result of the latest collaboration with ECAL and to officially launch the Marsotto LAB collection by presenting a selection of accessories that are now available for sale. Based on a scenographic concept imagined by Swiss designer Charlotte Therre, these objects come to life, displayed on marble furniture produced by the family company.STUDENTS, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , VENUEShowroom Marsotto Largo Claudio Treves 2 20121 Milan — ItalieHEAD OF PROGRAMMECOLLABORATIONMarsotto LABDATESDu 23 octobre au 21 décembre 2022UNDER THE DIRECTION OF, ,

Widely considered to be among the leading art and design institutions themselves, the ECAL approached internationally renowned designers, critics, and writers, whose answers reveal multiple approaches to teaching, in which individual style is not only encouraged, but rigorously pushed to develop into its most coherent professional form. Curated by acclaimed designer Jonathan Olivares and ECAL Director Alexis Georgacopoulos, the exhibition surveys a selection of twenty groundbreaking and defining projects by students and their tutors, all of them made out of fascinating teaching methods, leading to unconventional objects and revealed by a creative methodology in action, readily molding to accommodate the needs of the future. The exhibition shows a selection of these iconic projects and retraces their design process through a historical context. In other words, it challenges the question “How to best teach design today?”. A question that Max Bill and Ettore Sottsass tried to answer in 1983 in the context of the Design Since 1945 exhibition at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Their answer? Each gave a response that reflected his own image: the first emphasized the pragmatism and practicality of design. The second, its utopian and metaphorical character. These two lines of thought are found at the heart of the exhibition through its scenography: from the eccentric and colorful glass material to the functional and straightforward wooden structure, the exhibition answers the question in itself: there is not one but many best ways to teach design today. Beside the exhibition, the findings are also presented in a publication, published by Phaidon and edited by Jonathan Olivares et Alexis Georgacopoulos.

ECAL x On 2040 Master Product Design students from ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne have created, in collaboration with Swiss brand On Running, shoe soles of the future. Under the guidance of Christophe Guberan, guest designer of MA Product Design and support of Thilo Alex Brunner, head of design at On, students explored within the context of the year 2040, concept shoe soles. The outcomes range from exploring the use of new materials and processes, to reinterpreting and re-contextualising common place aspects of todays world, all with a focus on future performance. A select number of the designs were developed into elaborate prototypes and exhibited at On s new headquarters in Zurich in collaboration with works from other ECAL MA s photography and Type Design. Developed Concepts:By Paul Rees: HOW TO CREATE THE SENSATION OF EFFORTLESS FLOATING DURING THE RUN? Inspired by the feeling of jumping on a trampoline, this shoe sole is composed of two elements: a customisable elastic web and a hollow EVA sole. This new construction offers a new running dynamic.By Clemens Neureiter : REIMAGINING THE CARBON-PLATE FOR RUNNING SHOES Pushing the expression of a shoe sole to its limits, this carbon fibre rod sole plays with the elasticity and the resistance of this highly technical material to create a good cushioning and to minimise both material usage and weight.By Tsubasa Koshide: HOW TO CREATE A SHOE SOLE WITH A CUSTOMISABLE BALANCE? Thanks to new multi-material 3D printing techniques, this shoe sole concept offers the possibility to customise material densities across the entire component. Each Shoe can therefore be precisely adapted to each runner.By Stefan Troendle: HOW TO MAKE A WOVEN SHOE SOLE ? Playing with new possibilities of 3D weaving, this shoe sole concept could be produced in one part allowing for both customisable cushioning and efficient production.By Antoine Jacquat: HOW TO PRODUCE SOLES WITHOUT MOULDS? 3D printing technologies are offering various new possibilities to the footwear industry; however, processes are often limited by slow production cycles. Instead, this concept uses a heat inflating 3D printed foam to allow for post-printing expansion, making production more efficient and feasible whilst benefiting from the free design constraint possibilities of 3D printing. By Lukas Lüttgen: HOW TO CREATE AN ADAPTIVE SOLE? Composed of recycled TPU, this concept shoe sole is designed to bio-mimic the fin-ray effect whilst being produced by traditional extrusion process. By Manuel Steffan: WHAT COULD BE THE LIGHTEST, YET HIGH PERFORMING RUNNING SOLE? This shoe sole concept utilises a 3D printed thread structure to both reduce the quantity of material required and allow for customisable sizing and compression density.Exhibition at On Headquaters:

ON 2040 - MASTER PRODUCT DESIGN Following a collaboration with the Swiss avant-garde brand On, ECAL is proud to present the interdisciplinary work carried out jointly by the 2nd year students of the Product Design, Photography and Type Design Masters. Under the direction of Christophe Guberan, guest designer of the MA in Product Design and with the support of Thilo Alex Brunner, head of design at On, 7 students present elaborate prototypes exploring the possibilities offered by innovative materials, techniques, and creative processes. A resolutely prospective approach that relies on speculative design to think the sole of tomorrow. In 2010 On created a new running shoe sole with a disruptive approach: CloudTec®. Built around a set of “flexible elements”, On soles ensure cushioned landing and propulsive take-off for a unique running sensation. This design has since been adopted by running enthusiasts and professionals alike. Nowadays, the search for new materials and technologies encourages the brand to explore the future of soles. It is in this perspective that the collaboration between two leading entities in the Swiss design scene – ECAL and On – was born.HOW TO CREATE THE SENSATION OF EFFORTLESS FLOATING DURING THE RUN? ON 2040 - MASTER PHOTOGRAPHY Following a collaboration with the Swiss avant-garde brand On, ECAL is proud to present the interdisciplinary work carried out jointly by the 2nd year students of the Product Design, Photography and Type Design Masters. Under the guidance of the photographer Maxime Guyon, 12 students have given shape to what On s visual universe could be in the future. In close collaboration with the MA in Product Design, they present the universe and visual identity of the sole of 2040.In 2010 On created a new running shoe sole with a disruptive approach: CloudTec®. Built around a set of “flexible elements”, On soles ensure cushioned landing and propulsive take-off for a unique running sensation. This design has since been adopted by running enthusiasts and professionals alike. Nowadays, the search for new materials and technologies encourages the brand to explore the future of soles. It is in this perspective that the collaboration between two leading entities in the Swiss design scene – ECAL and On – was born. Through a transversal approach to innovation, 34 students on a Master s programme at ECAL have developed a series of futuristic prototypes, rethinking the brand s universe, and exploring new writing systems. The interdisciplinary project brings together three Master s programmes: MA in Product Design, MA in Photography and MA in Type Design. Each year, these specializations attract students from all over the world.ELECTRIC MUD In 2040, the earth has been trodden by billions of men, by armies, sportsmen, bankers and adventurers. It becomes mud, shapeless, it sticks everywhere after having been trampled by our plastic sneakers, symbol of our consumerism. But the earth turned into mud keeps in its heart the strength to carry life. Inexhaustible ground of energy and diversity, it takes shape again. This mud is the amniotic liquid of tomorrow s material. The man of 2040 finds himself facing a new raw element, with which he regains his footing: the earth offers him a new ground to walk on. By THE LABORATORY The protagonists of this series are the engineers of On, busy in creating and perfectioning the new sole Clouds 2040 in the On laboratories. By ON RUNNING For the On running project, I created a futuristic visual world in which the shoes become living organisms. I took 3D scans of the shoes and transformed them into sculptures which would not be possible with classic photography. In the animations, they become something living even when they are made out of futuristic shiny materials. For me the future of products and materials should be hand in hand together with more natural and lab grown materials. On some pictures, it seems like you can harvest the shoes from the sculptures. The visuals also refers to classic still life photography and composition. By CLOUDS2040 For the On Clouds2040 project, I focused on the engineering part of the brand and tried to get to know On products through testing them with fictive devices. In a second step, I thought about how I can improve the shoes to make them ready for the challenges of the future. These are the results of my research. By CLOUDS2040 A little less than a month ago, China landed its first rover on Mars. Two months ago, the USA, with the help of its astromobile perseverance, converted carbon dioxide from the Martian atmosphere into oxygen. Twenty years ago, Russia sent their first tourist into space. What awaits us in twenty years from now? My vision of the future for 2040 is a vision that takes place elsewhere, in a different space-time, where the laws of physics that we have known until now would no longer apply. New materials will be discovered, materials that renew themselves and react according to the dimension in which they are found. As On is at the cutting edge of technology, the brand will have already appropriated the technology necessary to use these materials, in order to offer ever more daring models adapted to each level of intensity. Allowing then more space exploration. By MELANGE According to the rover perseverance which landed in February 2021, life on mars doesn t seem that far away anymore. So, the On 2040 campaign is all about looking forward to a new era of civilization on Mars while adapting to the changing environments. It focuses on growing from where we have come before trough the exploration of the planet, to try to find new sustainable materials in new organic growing, as well as the hybridization of humans and other non-human beings. By MEMORIES OF A ROCK Each rock is a hard drive in the natural form. Each rock contains a piece of memory that tells its own past, where it comes from, what it used to be, and what happened. Years after years, it keeps the data of itself as a secret, lying still in a river, in a mountain, meditating, waiting. Until maybe one day some force cracks the rock, or someone cracks the code, then they ll find the secret of the rock, tells an ordinary but unique story. By

ON 2040 - MASTER TYPE DESIGN Following a collaboration with the Swiss avant-garde brand On, ECAL is proud to present the interdisciplinary work carried out jointly by the 2nd year students of the Product Design, Photography and Type Design Masters. Under the direction of Larissa Kasper, artistic director invited by the MA in Type Design, 14 students question the construction of written language, and explore its futuristic developments, both alphabetical and ideographic. For On, they offer a new writing system, which will accompany the sole of the future. It is in this perspective that the collaboration between two leading entities in the Swiss design scene – ECAL and On – was born.Searching for an answer to what type of writing system could be readable for a machine in the distant future, this abstract typeface is based on a circular 5-channel encoding system, working similarly to linear punchcards. There are 25 punch combinations in the 5-channel type system, meaning 32 places to encode letters, which can host the basic Latin alphabet. Visually, the typeface was inspired by cuneiform writing, which uses the stylus on clay tablets to punch ‘holes in the material. This aesthetic has been warped into signifying a punch on a few of the 5 places and providing each character with a unique combination of digits and forms. By The concept of this dystopian writing system is inspired by the artwork The Garden of Earthly Delights (1490-1510) by Hieronymus Bosch and its tripartite structure. The Trinity takes the main role and divides the static skeleton vertically into 3 sections: Positive, Neutral, Negative; Birth, Life, Death; The Garden of Eden, The Garden of Delights and Hell. Round, angular and diagonal capital letters of the Latin alphabet are arranged in categories. With the help of 3 defined basic shapes: circle, square and line, the characters are constructed on its defined skeleton. Altogether, the writing system consists of 24 characters – the manuscript was painted analogue with black ink on translucent paper and emphasizes the dystopian character. By Between typography and pictogram, our design is evolving. Inspired by the geometric forms already present in the On logotype, we have rationalized to the extreme the concept of a refined and methodical graphic system. By a new problematic of the coded language, associated with contemporary technologies, a completely modular encrypted typography was drawn. The pictograms and letters are composed by a very simple system of curves and lines which evolve and are assembled on a square grid, divided in 4. The only rule being that the forms cannot be superimposed the ones on the others. The script is programmed under Python language, allowing to generate and to exhaust the whole of the possible ones, that is to say 624 pictograms only composed of curves, having to represent the sport, the movement and always assembled within the same grid. By , Over the course of our time, language and communication will evolve in such a way that current writing systems no longer suffice. While there will still be translation methods for older systems still known to us, the writing system of the future will free itself from present rules and conventions and organically evolve into something exceedingly more complex. By The blob is a mysterious unicellular slim mold creature growing into networks. Famous for its supposed immortality, it has also been showing signs of learning capabilities. After many years of scientific studies and stimulation, it is finally able to communicate with us in 2040. By using a morpheme-based system, the blob can express complex ideas with its web-like growths. As seen in this transcription (to be read clockwise), each tentacle and intersections represent a basic concept which is then extrapolated into sentences and finally a full text. By New proposal for sending out a message to the future about ON 20(40). This new form of constructed language and writing system is inspired by the thermal-transfer printing technics. This digital printing method is used when fast and higher durability of printed matter (especially against heat) is desired. This « New Alphabet » offers a set of uppercase characters, as well as numbers and has been developed during the one-week workshop. By In the far future, human beings will communicate in whole new ways, we will understand the world around us in a much more complex way. The two-dimensional way of reading will be slowly replaced by three-dimensional holograms, capable of giving us a faster prediction of what is written. Based on the Spatial reasoning IQ tests exercises, this new writing system helps the reader draw conclusions about shapes based on limited information. Each face of the regular polyhedron will have a unique symbol on it (letter) and the Platonic solid will represent the complexity of the entire word. Holograms are a perfect solution when we don t want our communication to be framed on a surface, but with this system, we could still write on psychical objects by simply unfolding the polyhedron into a 2D Pattern. By Over the course of our time, language and communication will evolve in such a way that current writing systems no longer suffice. While there will still be translation methods for older systems still known to us, the writing system of the future will free itself from present rules and conventions and organically evolve into something exceedingly more complex. By In order to create a “new alphabet” that could potentially store knowledge about ON 2040(0) and transmit it into the future, I developed a constructed writing system consisting of two different styles. Both styles are built on the same basis. While the more organic style has a line system for better differentiation of the individual “characters”, the restrained one has a subtle feature consisting of different stroke lengths on the edges. Despite the technical appearance, the two styles enable a visual structure of the content into different information levels, which should help decrypt the message in the future. By Klaudz is designed to visually represent speech sounds in a written form by means of symbols. The script is based on a so-called phonetic transcription, whose basic principle is that it is applicable to all languages. Since its symbols denote the same phonetic properties, they break away from a language-bound orthography. Thinking of 2040, when internationality and the spoken language are gaining more importance, it is obvious to explore the forms of expression of an alternative phonetic script. The shapes of the letters derive from an underlying grid (the IPA vowel table), which in turn corresponds to the positions of the vowels resulting from the physical position of a speaker s tongue when pronouncing those sounds. There is a round and a non-round version of each. The consonants are integrated into the script according to their groupings as diacritical marks. By

Mélanie Fontaine – Latent* The mirroring system of instant messaging implies the presumed availability of the interlocutor. However, while waiting for a response, certain questions become recurrent: “Alex is online, why isn t he answering? What is he doing?” Latent* is a chat application that allows you to converse with your friends by developing the context of the discussion and what is not said. Just like theatre, it fuels the conversation by adding didascalies generated according to the collected data (response time, location). By highlighting the unsaid parts of an exchange, the generated reading mode enriches the discussion, creates poetic tension, and allows the interlocutors to become the characters of their own play. www.melaniefontaine.ch

Mayara Yamada – That Night Marara Kelly Played in My Town That Night Marara Kelly Played in My Town is a visual appearance peripheral to the Marara Kelly Art Show, a series of performance in which Mayara Yamada creates a form of self-mythology where she seeks out, throughout an evening divided into five chapters, Marara Kelly, her personal party entity, the guardian of her childhood dreams. The project showcases a series of photographs that begin in the Brazilian Amazon and end in Lake Geneva. As well as a typical banner of the Brazilian Amazon, that here announces an otherworldly party, the world in which Marara transits is magical and disrupts the established reality. There one could imagine a party where the entrance is made during the dive in the river and the after-party begins with the emersion in Lake Geneva.

Antoine Flahaut – The Parade (Editing) The editing of this film was a meticulous balancing act, consisting less of searching for clean and sophisticated cuts than of finding for each scene the brutality, the power, the troubled swirl of emotions that inhabit this group of teenagers fleeing through the streets of Athens. Fiction / 24 min Synopsis A group of high school students meet to participate in the national parade with their school. A student, is bullied by the teacher because of her nationality. They react, defend her and the conflict becomes intense. To avoid the consequences, they decide to run away. They settle on the top of a nearby hill and spend the rest of the day there, as an act of escapism. Up there, they seem to have forgotten their anxieties and problems, as if they were in another world. Student s comment To embody the energy of a rebellious adolescence in search of self, which is at the heart of the story of his film, Michail decided to give his young actors (amateurs and non-professionals) freedom of space and movement in scenes designed as long improvisations followed by a camera that stuck to the bodies of the characters. The editing was a meticulous balancing act, consisting less of searching for clean and sophisticated cuts than of finding for each scene the brutality, the power, the troubled swirl of emotions that inhabit this group of teenagers fleeing through the streets of Athens.

Michail Galanopoulos – The Parade (Direction) A day in the life of a group of high school students in Athens, Greece, during the day of the national military parade. Student s comment The film s cinematographic approach is anthropocentric and strongly focused on the characters of the story. The use of handheld camera allows us to follow multiple characters, not limiting the actors movements, but also giving them the freedom to experience the real locations in which they are filmed. The editing, with breaks in the axis several times in the duration of a scene, connecting several shots that depict the same action and pass from one character to another, was chosen specifically for this type of cinematography. The sound establishes continuity throughout each scene.

Cheuk Yin Chow – M-01 Illumination-induced Multispectral Camera Investment in fine art painting is a huge, opaque market and art authentication is crucial. Multispectral imaging reveals erased signatures and underdrawings, helping identify artworks and providing information about their history and manufacturing process. There is a demand from art experts for a user-friendly multispectral camera that might provide instant readable results and help make comparative study more efficient and robust. My mission was to develop the hand-held multispectral camera in collaboration with the start-up MATIS and CSEM (Swiss Centre for Electronics and Microtechnology). The unibody module takes into account the ease of installation and usability for art experts when photographing paintings. The structure was developed based on cost-effective, 3D printing production in small batches.

Thomas Manil – Lemanne Jewellery is a product, the result of know-how, that raises questions about its materials, manufacturing techniques, aesthetics, etc. From high jewellery to costume jewellery, via the stances taken by contemporary jewellers, the jewellery sector – whether it comes under the heading of craftsmanship, art or design – has found its way into innovation and creativity. Lemanne is a collection of jewels inspired by the Lake Geneva region, which makes use of its traditional know-how. The refined combination of pearls, made from pure guanine of fish scales from Lake Geneva, combined with manufacturing processes and fishing techniques, generates the DNA and character of the project in its entirety.

Dominik Bissem – Rivale Rivale Serif and Rivale Grotesk are the main typefaces in this family. Both styles are designed to be used at the same time, while retaining their own character. The structure is not mathematically based on the same skeleton, the optical impression stands in the foreground and reflects the concept of the system: as homogeneous as necessary and as independent as possible. Throughout the design process both styles constantly influenced one another, and the system grew organically. Serif and Grotesk come in five weights – light, regular, medium, bold, and dark – with matching italics. The presentation attempts to show the typefaces in a realistic terrain and contrasts them with the author s own paintings.

Karima Deghayli – Yameen and Meel As the world becomes increasingly connected, the need for multiscript type families grows significantly. Yameen is a variable multiscript typeface covering Arabic and Latin. Designed for text, its weights range from regular to bold. The Arabic was inspired by Naskh calligraphy, retaining in its outlines the character of the Qalam. The Latin forms present the same sharp aesthetic taken from the parallel pen offering a calligraphic interpretation of old-style typefaces. Preserving both scripts authenticity, Yameen is designed for harmonious bilingual typesetting. Meel is an Arabic display font inspired by various sources: from vintage music albums to vernacular Beirut type. Exploring the Ruqaa style, its boldness excels in large sizes and its flowing character merges the tool and the digital.
