Automated Photography - Fall 2022 - MAP2 The course focuses on the relationship between photography and play, and rethinks the role of the photographer as player. Students learned about notions of gamification of the image as well as image play as a form of artistic intervention, questioning systems of value creation and image economies. During the semester, students looked at contemporary and more historical artworks, as well as vernacular positions, engaging with the way artists and photographers submit or subvert rules, conform to or rebel against image systems, and ultimately ‘win or ‘lose the game. The course also introduced practical tools, learning the foundations of creative programming and how to (mis)use software and automated imaging systems.
ENCOURAGEMENT PRIZE OF THE CITY OF RENENS 2022 For the 10th consecutive year, the City of Renens awards the Encouragement Prize to ECAL students. Lea Sblandano, student in Bachelor Photography, and Luis Rodriguez, student in Master Product Design, received the 2022 award for the quality of their work. Abloom explores the reproduction of artificially generated organisms. As nature constantly evolves and mutates, the speculation of new species through 3D softwares helps to envision a future where critically endangered plants thrive in virtual space as they slowly disappear from the environment. By exploring principles inherent in nature such as cloning or crossbreeding, we can t help but wonder where the fine line between preservation and control sits in order to determine our own influence over the spaces we inhabit. Workshop Heidi News Heïdi News asked the Ecal film department to create ten films based on a series of articles on the theme of food. The students had to make very short films of two to three minutes that could be broadcast on the newspaper s website and social networks. To reach readers/viewers on cell phones, the films had to be made in a vertical format and had to be able to capture attention from the first few seconds. The students all proposed an original treatment of the information and a singular form: several animation projects, a dystopian fiction, a purely graphic film, a documentary or a film edited only from archives. Each in their own way, these films experiment with a way of shedding additional light on the journalistic text without seeking to paraphrase it. Seungmok Lee – Play Collection for Picnic My project is based on a personal experience in Switzerland. Whenever I go for a picnic in parks or by the lake in Switzerland, I see people playing cards on the train or giant chess in the park with their family and friends. There is always a joyful atmosphere and a sense of happiness around them. That is why I decided to design this Play collection for picnic. I used sustainable materials like cork and paper, but at the same time, I sought to keep the aesthetics of the object. A thing of long-lasting beauty is engraving. Not only does it reduce chemical ink for printing but it also allows people to feel the contrast between light and shadow through the object.
Official launch of the Marsotto LAB collection,21.10–23.12.2022,SPBH Space, Milan From 21 October to 23 December 2022, ECAL and more specifically the students of the Master of Advanced Studies in Design for Luxury and Craftsmanship will unveil the result of their latest collaboration with the Italian brand Marsotto LAB and officially launch the collection of the same name, composed of a selection of accessories created between 2018 and today through collaborations with international designers. Following the growing success of Marsotto Edizioni, the Italian marble company now presents Marsotto LAB, a new platform geared towards the production of accessories imagined by young designers and students from art and design schools. Since the creation of this platform, the family company has called on ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne and more specifically on the students of the Masters of Advanced Studies in Design for Luxury and Craftsmanship to work on a collection of everyday objects. These various collaborations, led successively by Spanish designer Jaime Hayon, French designer Pierre Charpin, and Slovakian designer Tomáš Král, have resulted in the production of clocks and other home accessories with shapes that are as elegant as they are sculptural. Although several pieces have already been exhibited around the world, the aim of this exhibition is to showcase the result of the latest collaboration with ECAL and to officially launch the Marsotto LAB collection by presenting a selection of accessories that are now available for sale. Widely considered to be among the leading art and design institutions themselves, the ECAL approached internationally renowned designers, critics, and writers, whose answers reveal multiple approaches to teaching, in which individual style is not only encouraged, but rigorously pushed to develop into its most coherent professional form. Curated by acclaimed designer Jonathan Olivares and ECAL Director Alexis Georgacopoulos, the exhibition surveys a selection of twenty groundbreaking and defining projects by students and their tutors, all of them made out of fascinating teaching methods, leading to unconventional objects and revealed by a creative methodology in action, readily molding to accommodate the needs of the future. The exhibition shows a selection of these iconic projects and retraces their design process through a historical context. In other words, it challenges the question “How to best teach design today?”. A question that Max Bill and Ettore Sottsass tried to answer in 1983 in the context of the Design Since 1945 exhibition at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Their answer? Each gave a response that reflected his own image: the first emphasized the pragmatism and practicality of design. The second, its utopian and metaphorical character. These two lines of thought are found at the heart of the exhibition through its scenography: from the eccentric and colorful glass material to the functional and straightforward wooden structure, the exhibition answers the question in itself: there is not one but many best ways to teach design today. Beside the exhibition, the findings are also presented in a publication, published by Phaidon and edited by Jonathan Olivares et Alexis Georgacopoulos.

He has in particular created audiovisual installations for designers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec at the Centre Pompidou and architectural films for Jean Nouvel, as well as several programmes and thematic evenings for Arte. He is also a professor at ECAL Cinema department. Alongside him, Mykyta Kryvosheiev will also lead the masterclass. Graduate of the Bachelor s degree in Media at HEAD and of ECAL/HEAD Master Cinema in editing, Mykyta Kryvosheiev has since worked as an assistant in ECAL/HEAD Master Cinema, as an assistant editor on various fiction and documentary projects, and for television (RTS) and cinema magazines. Valentina Parati – Spotter The place becomes time Space becomes mine On the one hand we have reality, a delicate analysis of the place of observation, a meeting place for enthusiasts but also for children who enjoy dreaming and watching planes; on the other hand, we have a magical, transformative part: an airport that comes alive and produces music in the absence of people. Combining these two characteristics, I decided to transform the airport, not into a place of observation, but of listening, a place to appreciate repetition. Sunna Margrét Þórisdóttir – Five Songs for Swimming Five Songs for Swimming is an installation project that is divided into three parts: vinyl, book and performance. The vinyl consists of five original songs inspired by the late Unnur Ágústsdóttir, a swimming queen from the 40s who grew up on an isolated island in the Atlantic. The book titled An Insufficient Guide to Writing a Lullaby is written around the songs recorded on the vinyl in relation to the subject of the lullaby and daydreaming. A bright velvet fabric marks the space where the songs are performed.
Mahalia Taje Giotto – Existential Boner existential boner is a book about obsessions. Obsessions linked to the body, gender identity, sexuality and desire. Mahalia Taje Giotto, born in 1992, was assigned female at birth. Going through several phases of physical transformation - from writing on their skin as a child to tattoos as an adult and eating disorders as an adolescent - Taje began their transition in 2020. This identity journey is at the heart of their work, which expresses the incessant thoughts that drive them through a play of superimpositions. The daily observation of physical changes is transcribed in images and texts, somewhere between abstract and concrete. The result is an articulated chaos that reflects the way in which taje is experiencing their transformation, with a sculptural approach to the book as a reflection of the changes in her body. The artist explores their desires and fluid identity, while giving visibility to the transgender community from which they come.
Giacomo Bastianelli – Quarto Unlike the more traditional five-lined musical stave, a graphic score is a different way of notating a piece of music. Originally called “eye music,” it first appeared in its modern form in the 1950s, when notation became more and more influenced by a dialogue with painting, installations, and performativity. These conceptions required a new language and a unique reading of what it is to be musical. Quarto aims to revisit the idea of graphic scores in a contemporary tone, connecting MIDI technology with variable fonts and producing an experience that could take the form of an interactive/synesthetic performance or a piece of printed visual music with its own autonomy, independent of sound.
Laura Zsófia Csocsán – Neureal The book Neureal features an exploration of AI software that was tested on a series of images. Glitches and the software s “residues” expose the neural filter s activity, which colourises black and white photographs. The visual material highlights different scenarios in relation to our technology-influenced, everyday lives, shown in contrast with images of flowers and nature. They ultimately construct an alternate reality created by the programme. Neureal Display is a reverse-contrast sans, accompanied by a Mono version designed for small sizes. Initial drawings based on visual distortions were extrapolated, generating new ideas with mathematical calculations. The final typeface consists of these revised and redrawn shapes as a result of this back-and-forth experimentation with the software.
Stefan Fitze – Remo & Rhea Remo & Rhea is a typeface family based on the proportions of Roman square capitals as found in the inscription on the tomb of the children of Sextus Pompeius Justus (2nd century AD) on the Via Appia in Rome. Linked by their common origin – an apocryphal sketch of the development of Roman Type – Remo Sans and Rhea Serif intrinsically evolved into a set of two emancipated yet related typefaces, expanding the notion of the traditional type family. Consisting of a sans serif (Remo) and a serif typeface (Rhea) with a typewriter complement, the family is explicitly built for text-heavy and typographically complex environments, offering a wide range of possibilities for contemporary typesetting.
Amélie Gallay – Phaedon Phaedon is an elegant typeface family based on Ancien Romain, an Elzevir metal type issued by the French type foundry Deberny & Cie around 1880–1890. Driven by the desire to keep the nobility and fragility of the original, Phaedon s lighter weights are a faithful reinterpretation of Ancien Romain while the bolder weights are personal interpretations. A text style compliments the family. With its four display weights, matching italics, and a text style, Phaedon is intended for contemporary use and stands out with its highly contrasted, slightly condensed and delicate attributes.
Samira Schneuwly – Lyga Lyga is a restrained and balanced serif typeface family with heavily angled italics to emphasise individual words, short paragraphs or brief headlines. Designed as a utilitarian text font, it is well suited for small sizes where its even and harmonious text colour comes into effect. Lyga draws from a source originally designed as a lead typeface in the late 19th century. Elzévir Turlot was found in the Caractères de Labeurs de l Imprimerie A. Rey specimen and was carefully interpreted in order to create a design that supports present-day text settings, while retaining the spirit and charm of its original appearance. Lyga comes in six weights with corresponding italics.
Mathilde Rietsch – Glacier Memories Glacier Memories is a publication that deals with the impact of melting glaciers on the Swiss landscape. It is based on the premise that the perception of our environment is the result of a subjective construction mixing experience, memory and narration. The book is based on the model of the four poles of landscape perception developed by Swiss professor Norman Backhaus and brings together a plurality of views on glaciers. It addresses in particular questions of memory, loss and mourning in relation to the landscape. Making visible what cannot be physically observed, it leads readers to question their relationship with the environment, as well as the legacy of past societies and the one bequeathed to future generations.
Alexandre Brunisholz – Erosio The gorge, a reflection of time and of the power of nature, is a witness to the Earth s transformation. Over the millennia, the passage of water has gradually carved a path in the depths of the Earth, creating a natural ruin with organic shapes and a mystical atmosphere. This project was developed based on the erosion of rock by water through the study of a selection of 12 Swiss gorges. A silver jewel created for each of the gorges was given back to nature, thanks to a machine that accelerates deterioration through a tumbling process with elements taken from each of the 12 sites. Erosio is a look book of this jewellery collection, documenting the research locations as well as the working process developed.
Alice Monguzzi – Antonio Boggeri What answers can found objects provide? I come from a family of graphic designers: my father, his father before him, and my great-grandfather, Antonio Boggeri – four generations, four practices, but a common core. To understand where we come from, where I come from, there are traces, objects that get people talking, that bring back to memory; objects to get to know him, my grandmother s father; objects that remain – in our homes, in boxes. To get closer to him, I give voice to a woman, my grandmother. Through her, through the stories that arise from his relics, I try to draw a portrait of a man I never knew. This book bears witness to a transmission, the trace of an attempt to find one s place in a form of heritage that we all carry.
Tania Praz – Home Is Where Everything Starts The creative process and space as a musical universe is the basis of this project which analyses the Bedroom Music movement through different media and artists. With the help of six musicians, an analysis of Bedroom Music was carried out. This project presents a musical movement that links intimacy with performance, a DIY approach with a professional one, or solitude with sharing. This work aims to transmit the contrasted and complex universe of this movement. The project is divided into three parts: an intimate, sincere video, a book as a presentation of the movement, and a set design hosting live performances as a conclusion of the research process. These three media respond to each other in a common presentation aiming to immerse the audience in this universe.
Charlotte Viglino – FMXM FMXM (FemMeXs et Musique) is a music label that aims to represent female musicians in the French-speaking part of Switzerland. The project began after meeting womxn and discussing various issues such as legitimacy, stereotypes, sexualisation, discrimination, sexism or lack of representation. FMXM is a platform that aims to denounce gender-related issues but also to promote contemporary music produced by womxn. FMXM takes the form of a website including original sound and visual content as well as a video/sound installation highlighting the denunciation aspect of the project. FMXM navigates around a political subject but with an immersive, intimate and poetic point of view.
Mara Wohlfahrt – Algae in posterum Algae represent our past, our present and our future. They are at the origin of life on Earth and supply us with 70% of our oxygen. They are capable of transforming and thus replacing most of the products that represent a threat to the survival of our planet, such as plastics, fabrics and fuels. Atelier LUMA, a design and research laboratory based in Arles, is looking for ways to transform algae into a material that can be used in the field of creation. Since algae is still considered insignificant and sometimes even repulsive, the Algae in posterum project hopes, through collaboration with Atelier LUMA, to enhance this almost alchemical, even magical dimension of algae for the future of the creative field.
Lara Zettl – Future Fossils Future Fossils recounts the discovery of the first human-made fossil and illustrates the pathway to its origin in five chapters. Between a scientific report and a travel journal, this project shows human beings effect on planet Earth by contextualising their social, geopolitical, and economic dimensions. Abandoned shores, shifting oceans and overloaded landfills reflect the environmentally damaging colonial legacy of a specific material, i.e., plastic. This project tells the global stories of these fossilised artefacts, which bear witness to human beings excessive material culture and to the rivalry between the living and built realms.
Clara Bertière – Yum During a visit at the CHUV, I noticed that there were no specific dishes for small children. Parents most often have to bring their own glasses or cutlery. This is why I created Yum, a set of tableware accessories for hospitalised children. The silicone set includes a children s plate rim for children who can only use one arm, a holder for glass jars, and handles to slide over cutlery which help improve the child s grip. With Yum, children are more autonomous and eating becomes more enjoyable thanks to the colours and shapes. Meals become a moment of conviviality with the handles of the cutlery that turn into playful companions!
Frederik Buchmann – Mush.Room In a society that is constantly producing and consuming and where planned obsolescence is built into any products, we have to question the way we use things. Furniture from current Olympic Games is often discarded or sold after two weeks of use. Mush.Room offers a durable and economical furniture solution for short-lived events. Consisting of five essential pieces, this family of objects meets the basic needs of a room for a short stay. The material, mycelium composite, is a mixture of hemp fibre and fungus. The whole is heat pressed and the ladder acts as a binder. As a result, these units do not contain formaldehyde adhesives that are harmful to health and nature. The components are locally sourced and will be able to continue their life cycle after composting without leaving a trace on the planet.
Alex Nguyen – Potential Objects Potential Objects is a project in the form of a video game/digital tool in virtual reality. The game invites users to a fictional world in which they can move and design objects from a library of elements that can be linked together. In order to have varied results regarding the produced objects, people will be able to integrate pieces designed by previous users when creating a new object.
Constance Thiessoz – MBK MBK is a mobile bookshop that moves around to promote and sell books easily. This bookshop can be used for a temporary indoor or outdoor event such as a book fair, an exhibition or a design week. Its compact structure, on wheels, makes it easy to transport and move. MBK is composed of a display for books that unfolds on one side and on the other side a seat that also unfolds to browse the books. In the centre of the structure, drawers are placed to store them. An umbrella can be integrated in the centre of the bookshop to provide shelter from the sun.
Florian Hilt – New Order « New Order generates a series of encounters and interactions between distant elements through multiple approaches in the visual, digital and installation fields. Through these exchanges, I reveal my secret nature: my impulses, fears and dreams. By exploring them as infinite spaces with multiple levels of information, past, present and future mix to reveal new assemblages. My collection is made of contrasted fragments: web archives and smartphone pictures, ancient-looking artefacts and video games. The installation acts as a chaotic self-portrait and allows viewers to choose their own path and question themselves. By linking the elements that compose it, each experience is the result of a new order.» - Florian Hilt
Angèle Marignac-Serra – Isula Anima « As everything regenerates, I wander the island of my ancestors. This book captures my encounter with the souls of this place and the invisible realm. I am confronted with a harsh and confidential geological world. None of my close family members reside there anymore. The various protagonists constitute clues, traces bearing the three kingdoms of the living. They become my clan. I become an archaeologist of this land. Animated by ancestral vernacular beliefs, the landscapes become anthropomorphised. It is a tribute to the secret nature, to the imperceptible, in search of a face in the stone, the trees, the sky. I leave room for my imagination and fantasise modern ruins like posthumous signs. The border with death becomes more and more tangible.»
Basil Pérot – As Long as You Wait This short film is about expressing our inability to come to terms with reality, especially during traumatic events. To reach this state of osmosis, we try to observe, feel, and listen as intensely as we can. This is how Pola s character tries to grasp reality, as she slowly sinks into madness, between paranoia and identity crisis. The project appears as a transcription of Pola s point of view and of the feelings she experiences. A book will compile Pola s thoughts that she writes throughout the film in a burst of lucidity through which she tries to convince herself that what she is experiencing is real.
Camille Spiller – Smooth Space « My work focuses on the construction of the city and addresses my own critical position within the extensive social fabric produced by the city. Inspired by Deleuze and Guattari s “smooth space” — i.e., open, free-flowing, multidimensional — this work analyses and connects urbanisation processes in various West European cities. Fragments of prefabricated buildings, office blocks and streets aggregate chaotically. By further warping their aspect through the photographic lens their chaos is accentuated thus generating an atmosphere of doubt. Collage in post-production pushes distortion to the point of creating a conundrum between optical illusion and constructed reality.»
Salomé Chatriot – Lactose Oozing From a Breathing Singularity In 2018 a sprawling turbo alternator awakened under Salomé Chatriot s caresses as she helped it out of its lethargy with a set of soft medical systems. They merged to create a space time destined to be dismantled, fragmented and reassembled inside the machine s fertile matrix: Fragile Ecosystem. In this polymorphic universe, the fusion of technological and organic elements fosters the emergence of sculptures and virtual environments. Physical processes such as Chatriot s breathing activate mechanical systems, resulting in symbiosis between the human body and her technological devices. Stuck in this nymphosis, they are constantly exchanging enzymes, hormones and proteins while infecting each other s systems with vital breath, carnal desire and empathic energy.
Tudor Ciurescu – The Dream I Still Have The rotating sculpture showcased in this exhibition, named The Dream I Still Have, is a reproduction of the artist s childhood swing, a rusty post-Soviet swing that holds a forgotten character. The character draws inspiration from Glenn/Shiftace, the non-gendered animatronic with a Freudian complex from the Hollywood film Chucky that was shot in Romania. The continuous movement of the swing aims to transpose the viewer into a state of reflection – a movement that relates to the swiping of videos on TikTok and the subject of Guy Debord s book, Society of the Spectacle. The work s movement is activated by a human presence thanks to sensors – the human presence being essential. Just like a theme park, art becomes a place to feel fear without the consequences.
Iris Moine – Twist Twist was thought out as part of the upcoming industrial design exhibition at mudac - Musée cantonal de design et d arts appliqués contemporains. The aim of this project is to engage children s curiosity about design, for whom the idea of visiting a museum is often not the most exciting. How can we encourage a stimulating visit and discovery of the exhibits? By bringing out an object from the exhibition, the Bold chair by Big-Game studio, this project transforms it into an interactive installation. Guided by a character on screen, children are invited to interact with certain parts of the chair: sitting, pinching, turning, etc. These interactions trigger games, and information is presented in a playful way, thus creating a direct and memorable relationship with the object and raising awareness of design.
Paolo Moretti appointed head of the ECAL Cinema Department As of September 1, 2022, Paolo Moretti will become the new head of the Cinema Department at ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne. Director and programmer of festivals, notably of the Quinzaine des réalisateurs at the Cannes Film Festival, Paolo Moretti will take over the responsibility of the Cinema Department of ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne in September 2022. He will succeed Pauline Gygax as head of the Bachelor Cinema program and Lionel Baier for the Master Cinema program (co-directed by HEAD Geneva). "I am above all very grateful to ECAL for offering me this opportunity. I am excited to continue the work initiated by Lionel Baier, then Pauline Gygax and to confront myself with a new dimension of the transmission of the codes and languages of contemporary cinema", says Paolo Moretti. After studying modern literature, between 2001 and 2008, Paolo Moretti worked for several film festivals and institutions in Europe, including the Centre Pompidou, the Filmoteca Española, the Cinemateca Portuguesa, the Leeds Film Festival and Cinéma du Réel. From 2008 to 2011, he was assistant to the director and programming advisor at the Venice Film Festival. In 2012 and 2013, he is a programming advisor for the Rome Film Festival (CinemaXXI). Since 2012, he has been collaborating with the Visions du Réel festival (Nyon), first as a member of the selection committee (2012-2017), then as an artistic advisor. From 2012 to 2018, he is also a member of the selection committee of FIDMarseille. He is the associate producer of the American independent feature film L for Leisure by Lev Kalman and Whitney Horn, presented at the Rotterdam Film Festival in 2014. Between 2014 and 2020, he works as a director of the La Roche-sur-Yon International Film Festival and of the art house cinema Le Concorde. Between 2018 and 2022, he is the general delegate of the Quinzaine des réalisateurs at the Cannes Film Festival. Since 2020, he has been the director of the art house cinema Les Cinémas du Grütli in Geneva, where he will be able to continue to carry out his mission in conjunction with ECAL, thanks to a redistribution of tasks, notably administrative, of the Geneva institution. "Paolo Moretti has an exceptional network and a rich and varied international experience, punctuated by numerous successes. Through his desire to constantly highlight the films of young talent, he has established himself over time as a valuable and privileged interlocutor for filmmakers and the industry. I am sure that his approach as an outstanding facilitator will suit our students perfectly and will lead them to progress even further and to surpass themselves", says Alexis Georgacopoulos, ECAL Director. For the Bachelor Cinema program, Paolo Moretti will replace Pauline Gygax - who will keep a part of her teaching at ECAL, but will concentrate primarily on her activity as a producer, the intensity of which obliges her to reduce her workload within the Cinema Department. As for Lionel Baier, co-director of the Master Cinema program, he will continue his career as a director, while also maintaining a teaching schedule at the Lausanne school.
