Antonio D Elisiis – Hierax Antiqua Hierax Antiqua is a contemporary typeface family composed of 24 styles with text and display cut, suitable for editorial publication and identity projects. The typeface is inspired by an ancient book printed in Venice around 1750, with various punches cut in different periods (1550 – 1780). Hence the aim of the project is to capture the spirit of Renaissance and Baroque types by analysing the works of Nicolas Jenson, Francesco Griffo, Claude Garamont, Pierre Haultin, Robert Granjon, Hendrik van den Keere, Christoffel van Dijck, Nicholas Kis, Simon de Colines, Guillaume Le Bé, Pierre-Simon Fournier le Jeune and Giambattista Bodoni. Hierax Antiqua aims to crystallise this era with an added contemporary feel through rigorous digital design.

Opening 19 June 2021, the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) – the world s leading museum of art, design and performance based in London – presents Design 1900 – Now, a new permanent gallery exploring how design shapes and is shaped by how we live, work, travel, communicate and consume. Housed within the museum s former 20th Century Gallery, this newly curated space brings together leading design objects alongside the first redisplay of V&A s celebrated "Rapid Response Collecting" programme since its founding in 2014. As part of the gallery, new acquisitions will go on display, including the ECAL Digital Market project by ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne. “We are delighted to bring the ECAL Digital Market project into the V&As collection of digital and product design,” says Corinna Gardner, Senior Curator of Design and Digital at the V&A. “We have an established history of acquiring 3D printed designs and this project has the ability to speak to the future of this exciting discipline.” In partnership with the 3D printing company Formlabs, the idea of this project is to present digital manufacturing as an industrial production tool thanks to a print farm composed of numerous machines printing the same pieces simultaneously. visioncreationnewsound.ch and research project "Phantom Power",04.06.2021 visioncreationnewsound.ch is a new website that documents research on sound and listening carried out within the Bachelor Fine Arts programme at ECAL. It gives access to materials produced during various events/experiments and will be gradually completed by textual material. The site is also designed as an archive in which materials from workshops dating from 2012 and contemporary research are inextricably linked. As part of this platform, the "Phantom Power" research project, which was launched in 2021, is especially highlighted. This project questions the social configurations of aural practices in the context of performances and sound installations. Through the collective study of three public events (the first of which had to be held behind closed doors), the project seeks to account for the ways in which artists and audiences make each other think and agree or disagree on meanings. The website will also present for the first time the original performances by Leif Elggren and Marja-Leena Sillanpää, as well as the discussions that followed between students and philosopher Vinciane Despret on 29 April. It will also feature these same performances performed by students on 30 April in front of Elggren and Sillanpää themselves. ECAL at Mapping Festival,13–23.05.2021 On the occasion of the Mapping Festival which will take place in Geneva at the API - Association pour le Patrimoine Industriel in the framework of the exhibition "Mots Futurs", ECAL is pleased to present two projects created by students of the Bachelor Media & Interaction Design. XY by ECAL Presentation of five analogue oscilloscopes diverted from their initial function as measuring devices, in order to exploit their graphic and interactive potential. Created during a workshop given by the American artist and designer Ted Davis (assisted by Sébastien Matos) to students in the Bachelor s programme Media & Interaction Design, the projects created propose animated sequences developed with the help of the free software "Processing", ranging from a labyrinth game to an intergalactic journey, via typographic research. Hide/Reveal by ECAL Collection of Instagram filters to be experimented in various places of the Festival (selection also available on smartphone via @ecal_ch). Students in the Bachelor Media & Interaction Design programme worked on the "Hide/Reveal" theme during a workshop given by artists Ines Alpha and Aaron Jablonski (assisted by Pierry Jaquillard and Kylan Luginbühl), enabling them to develop a visual universe using Spark AR software and to discover how tracking and facial analysis can sequence and animate graphic content. From Screen to Paper Abecedarium A one week workshop with Jessica In where 1st year Media & Interaction Design and Graphic Design students worked together on the link between screen and print content. During this week, the students did formal research in Processing in order to create an alphabet book, which was then printed using an Axidraw plotter.
The Sources of Jan Tschichold s The New Typography Jan Tschichold s essay Die neue Typographie (The New Typography, 1928) is a game-changing book, acclaimed as the curtain raiser of modern graphic design. While it takes the form of a critical essay and an operative manual, its sources have been understudied because of their difficult identification. This project aims to reconstruct the body of sources that Tschichold drew on to understand the broader cultural context of the book, through an international conference on its impact and a travelling exhibition. The year 2018 marked the 90th anniversary of the publication of Jan Tschichold s Die neue Typographie (The New Typography). After almost a century, Tschichold s game-changing book, together with the typographic movement that stemmed from it, still attracts the interest and curiosity of graphic design historians and practitioners. The book has entered the historiographical canon and its appeal has not faded. Yet, The New Typography is a victim of its own success: it enjoys the benefits of canonisation, while suffering some side effects. Having reached an almost mythical status, The New Typography is often taken for granted and rarely questioned or closely scrutinised. This paradox is the starting point of the present research project. Jan Tschichold (Leipzig 1902 – Locarno 1974) was a German-born, Swiss-naturalised typographer, type and book designer, teacher, typography theorist and critic. In the 1920s he became one of the leaders of the New Typography movement. His conversion to the Modernist cause was mediated by the Bauhaus lesson. This was learnt first through a visit to the Bauhaus exhibition in Weimar in the summer of 1923, and encouraged in the following years through acquaintance and friendship with key exponents of the Modernist movement such as László Moholy-Nagy and El Lissitzky. With the Nazis rise to power in 1933, Tschichold escaped Germany and took refuge in Switzerland, where he spent the rest of his life with the exception of two stays in England, in 1937 and between 1947 and 1949. Published in Berlin in 1928, Tschichold s The New Typography is a manifesto. It follows an earlier statement published in October 1925 in a special issue of the trade magazine Typographische Mitteilungen, entitled “Elementare Typographie.” It was intended as a textbook for graphic designers, printers, typesetters and typographers. The term “New Typography” was first used by László Moholy-Nagy in the Bauhaus exhibition catalogue of 1923. The New Typography, also known as “elementary” or “functional” typography, is the manifestation of Modernism in graphic design and printed communication. Its rules included the privilege for sans-serif typefaces, non-centred page layouts, photography and photomontage, standardised paper sizes, and the active use of white space. After the war, Tschichold gradually distanced himself from the New Typography. He condemned the rigidity of the movement from both a political-moral and a strictly typo- graphical perspective. The research project relies on the hypothesis that, despite being broadly considered a pivotal and game-changing book that paved the way to modern graphic design, The New Typography deserves further and closer scrutiny. Building on the hypothesis that bibliographic sources are among the so-far overlooked and neglected aspects of The New Typography which are waiting to be identified, discussed and contextualised, the research project employs them as a means to open the black box in which Tschichold s book has been kept until now. Once the bibliographical references (books, magazines, grey literature) have been identified, the project investigates what they can tell us about the lineage in which The New Typography was rooted and the kind of discourses and networks it stemmed from. Pour Milo Rau, l art est avant tout un «sport de combat» et une confrontation à la violence politique qui traverse l histoire récente. Avec les membres du NTGent qu il dirige et de l International Institute of Political Murder qu il a fondé en 2007, il se livre à des recherches historiques minutieuses avant de s emparer de son sujet. En mêlant Histoire, Art et Politique, Milo Rau met en oeuvre un processus de création unique, qui entremêle les niveaux de lecture pour provoquer l intime, la compassion, la solidarité et l éveil politique. C est ainsi qu il évoque «Les Derniers Jours des Ceausescu» (2009), donne à entendre la «Déclaration de Breivik» (2012), convoque les génocidaires rwandais avec «Hate Radio» (2012) ou provoque le réel dans «Le Tribunal sur le Congo» (2015, adapté au cinéma en 2018). Words form language – Typography forms meaning This research focusses on ways explored in typography to use letters as means of expression in order to emphasize the semantic, phonetic or visual qualities of language. Even though the typographer s work conventionally is to layout a given text in the most readable or accessible way, to guarantee the least interference possible between the text and the reader, there is a task beyond that: Typographers may put forward the distinct qualities and ideas of a text by translating it into a coherent visual form, a form that communicates a specific idea. As such typography is concerned with the meaning of words and their arrangement within a given surface. This research focusses on ways explored in typography to use letters as means of expression in order to emphasize the semantic, phonetic or visual qualities of language. From the liberated language of the Futurists to the experiments of the Dadaists, and the “New Typography” in the 1920s and into the heyday of Swiss modernist typography, we have seen a constant investigation into experimental uses of typography. But when speaking of typographic design and its influence on language, the voice of the concrete poets is often overlooked. As a poetic movement that emerged in the beginning of the 1950s in several European countries and South America, concrete poetry established itself internationally before fading into oblivion by the end of the1970s. Phantom Power Phantom Power questions the social configurations of the non-audible narratives of aural practices in performances and public sound installations. How does a performance or an installation acquire substance? How does it come to matter to the people who experience it? And do we account for it? The research project Phantom Power attempts to answer these broad questions by means of a descriptive study of three public performances and sound installations organised at ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne. Each case has been chosen for the specificity of what the invited artists (Leif Elggren, Arto Lindsay, Marja-leena Sillanpää, La Monte Young and Marian Zazeela) call upon: electronic voice phenomena (EVP), the interiority of sound, and transport through sound. All three are the object of an ethnographic approach using original methodology: for each event, one day is devoted to the experience of performances and installations, followed by a discussion between the public and the artists, monitored by guest researchers (Vinciane Despret, Salomé Voegelin and Juliette Volcler). The next day 1st-year BA students in Fine Arts re-enact the performances in front of the artists themselves. In other words, the chosen methodology offers a collective conceptual analysis on the first day and a collective analysis through practice on the second day. This is meant to help produce a field survey account of sound and of the narratives and the relational modes of existence of the works. Phantom Power is a research project initiated by the BA in Visual Arts department at ECAL. Furniture under pressure The potential of shape memory materials in furniture design. In response to the climatic, technical and aesthetic challenges posed in the field of industrial design by the transportation of goods, the Furniture under pressure project exhaustively investigates the possibilities of flat-packing offered by materials capable of occupying a fraction of their volume and then reconfiguring themselves in one piece, without mechanical assembly. This research-creation focuses on a specific case study, the chair. Over the last decade, the rapid development of new communication technologies has brought consumers and sellers much closer together. Physical sales outlets are constantly decreasing while online sales are increasing. Although still relatively unaffected by this change, furniture sales are no exception. In view of this development, thinking in terms of objects occupying as little space as possible for a time – known as flat-packing or flat-shipping – is of interest in terms of logistics and transport. By favouring an empirical approach to design research, focused on the use of the intrinsic properties of innovative materials rather than on the elaboration of complex mechanisms or assemblies, Furniture under pressure aims to bring to light a type of solution that is radically different from the DIY model of furniture, exemplified by IKEA. Indeed, the aim is to experimentally evaluate the opportunities offered by "smart" materials capable of reconfiguring themselves, under certain conditions, into a state occupying a fraction of their initial volume, and then recovering it, whether due to their natural compressibility (sponges, synthetic foams, rubber), their shape memory properties (metal alloys, polymers) or their ability to fold, whether naturally (fabric, paper) or through engineering work (folding, CNC cutting and milling, 3D printing). Inspired by Gaetano Pesce s famous Up5 armchair, the aim of the Furniture under pressure project is to identify and select a large number of materials with potential for producing a seat that can be transported in a small volume and return to its original shape once unpacked. More advanced and concrete exploration of the characteristics and possibilities of these materials will lead to the identification of at least five concrete candidates for real implementable production, from which prototype seats will be developed and their compression, packaging and expansion tested and documented. The prototypes will have to meet a specific objective: they will have to be able to be delivered in a standard Post Office box and installed in one piece without manual assembly of different parts. At the same time, the knowledge gathered will be shared through an online catalogue presenting the materials studied and their properties, as well as the results of the tests carried out. The Emergence of Video Art in Europe (1960–1980): history, theory, sources and archives. To date, there is no European-wide history of video art. It is this gap that the present research programme proposes to fill. Firstly by gathering data on the artists, the works and the events that enabled the emergence of this new artistic practice in the 1960s, or that were important in its development in the following years in Europe, and by bringing to light specific national conditions of production and distribution. This programme is based on an initial mapping of video art on a European scale undertaken between 2016 and 2020 thanks to the organisation of research seminars at the Bibliothèque nationale de France (BnF), the Institut d histoire de l art in Paris (INHA) and ECAL in partnership with the Université Paris 8. This first research programme was jointly funded by the Arts H2-H laboratory of excellence and then ESTHC, with ECAL and the BnF as partners. This indexing should be continued in many other regions with the aim of transnational rewriting. The objective of the research project is twofold. On the one hand, it aims to re-evaluate continental production, to take the measure of its richness and variety, and to identify a European identity – mixed, plural, open, but nevertheless forming a cultural whole – in the practice of video art. On the other hand, the aim is to rewrite the history of this medium on an international scale, counterbalancing the America-centric character of the specialised literature on the subject in order to draw other topographies, which also include Japan or South America, with Europe constituting a node within a wider network. In order to carry out this project to renew the approach to video art, both historiographically and theoretically, we are relying on the network of some fifty national and international specialists, researchers, archive holders, artists, and witnesses that the previous programme enabled us to establish. By questioning the medium of video, the aim is also to contribute to the creation of an archaeology of new media in Europe through a series of publications and an exhibition. Automated Photography The Automated Photography research project (2019–2021) is conducted by Milo Keller in the framework of the MA in Photography at ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne. It is a continuation of the research project Augmented Photography, equally conducted at ECAL (2016–2017), which aimed to question the mutability of the digital image, transformed both in its physical materiality and in its virtual expression. For the past twenty years, many photographers have been integrating images produced autonomously by machines into their work. We are now witnessing a paradigm shift in the process of creating photography. From photographic capture in the strict sense we move towards practices involving appropriation, automated and computational processes: a phenomenon which reflects a conception of space that is increasingly less built on the equivalence between the human eye and the machine. The Automated Photography research project (2019–2021) is conducted by Milo Keller in the framework of the MA in Photography at ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne. It is a continuation of the research project Augmented Photography, equally conducted at ECAL (2016–2017), which aimed to question the mutability of the digital image, transformed both in its physical materiality and in its virtual expression. Automated Photography focuses on a specific aspect of these changes, which are omnipresent in contemporary visual culture: the automation of capture systems (smartphones, lidar, UAVs, satellites, space probes), the automation of image processing (machine vision analysis, facial recognition), and the increasing automation of image production and post-production (CGI, photogrammetry, artificial intelligence). Automated Photography has a dual objective. On the one hand, it plans to develop a critical theory of the automated image, in order to confront the students of the MA in Photography with its multiple implications (social, political, technical and aesthetic). On the other hand, it proposes to respond to the profound changes in the photographic profession, which must constantly adapt to technological developments. By combining an analytical and a theoretical perspective with considerations resulting from the practical experiences with these technical devices, the project aims to take advantage of the crossroads of these different fields. Carhartt WIP × ECAL Earlier this year, Carhartt WIP (for Work in Progress) teamed up with ECAL, inviting Bachelor Photography students to interpret in their own way some of the emblematic pieces of the American clothing brand, which develops its own collections from the original Carhartt work clothes. The students, led by art director Nicolas Poillot, produced an editorial report, which was included in the latest issue of "WIP Magazine" published by Carhartt WIP and some of whose images will be exhibited at the ECAL on the occasion of the launch of this book.
Collaboration with La Prairie 2020 As part of the partnership with ECAL, Swiss Luxury House La Prairie has collaborated with students of the Master of Advanced Studies in Design for Luxury and Craftsmanship programme, under the creative leadership of Sabine Marcelis , designer and winner of Wallpaper* Magazine s 2020 Designer of the Year award. They were invited to design an object of design that expresses the brand s vision of Swissness – the purity, precision and timelessness inherent to the land of the house s origins. Using materials native to Switzerland, each student expressed a unique interpretation that captures the imagination. Collectively, their works embody an unmistakable Swiss aesthetic and, as citizens of the world, they bring a singular perspective to the notion of Swissness.The result is a combination of sculptural, kinetic, interactive and time-infused works that express diverse and creative interpretations of Swiss aesthetics. The works tell an emotional, immersive story through these installations.The six students and their works will be featured in an Instagram exhibition hosted on La Prairie s page from Thursday 21 January 2021.The winning student will receive a grant from La Prairie to use towards launching their design career. The winning piece will be selected by two parties: by a jury composed of design experts from ECAL and La Prairie and a call for votes from the public over Instagram. The final result will be announced on Monday 25 January 2021.
La Prairie x ECAL collaboration,22–25.01.2021,ECAL & La Prairie Instagram As part of the partnership with ECAL, Swiss Luxury House La Prairie has collaborated with students of the Master of Advanced Studies in Design for Luxury and Craftsmanship programme, under the creative leadership of Sabine Marcelis. Gal Bulka from Israel, Paula Chacartegui from Spain, Chia-Ling Chang from Taiwan, Apolline Morel-Lab from France, Fernando Rivero from Mexico, and Charlotte Therre from Switzerland distinguished themselves as part of this collaboration with La Prairie. They were invited to design an object of design that expresses the brand s vision of Swissness – the purity, precision and timelessness inherent to the land of the house s origins. Using materials native to Switzerland, each student expressed a unique interpretation that captures the imagination. Collectively, their works embody an unmistakable Swiss aesthetic and, as citizens of the world, they bring a singular perspective to the notion of Swissness. The result is a combination of sculptural, kinetic, interactive and time-infused works that express diverse and creative interpretations of Swiss aesthetics. The works tell an emotional, immersive story through these installations. The six students and their works will be featured in an Instagram exhibition hosted on La Prairie s page from Thursday 21 January 2021. The winning student will receive a grant from La Prairie to use towards launching their design career. The winning piece will be selected by two parties: by a jury composed of design experts from ECAL and La Prairie and a call for votes from the public over Instagram. The final result will be announced on Monday 25 January 2021.

Evelyn Yu-Ying Wu – Tofu To-Go The project consists of using quality Swiss soybeans and to make tofu appealing to Europeans. Tofu is a great source of protein. However, tofu products are often presented as large blocks swimming in liquid, which confuses people about how to consume them. Also, most people do not know that they can eat tofu cold. The “Tofu To-Go” project features a new type of tofu inspired by traditional cheese that is made entirely from soybeans. Byron Gago – Co-Based Objects The work is designed as a composition of four different pieces, which emulate a type of box reminiscent of various devices for transport and conservation. I am interested in cyber-punk and brutalist aesthetics in connection with an imagination characterised by a dystopian moment. Problem solving devices overlap and create a sense of distance with the original source of the hypothetical content or subject. Theo Luvisotto – Flip-Flap It is essential to have the opportunity to elevate oneself during childhood, to be able to educate oneself through the discovery of life but also to physically gain height to participate in the activities of grown-ups. “Flip-Flap” is a children s chair with a backrest that can be flipped down to form a stepladder. It enables children to focus on a personal activity but also to gain autonomy, discover new places and rise up to adult height to take part in everyday tasks such as preparing a meal or developing a project at the table.

"USM Design Grant x ECAL" exhibition,05–14.11.2020,Design Days, Flon, Lausanne For the 4th edition of the USM Design Grant awarded by the USM Foundation, ECAL s Bachelor Industrial Design students, under the direction of Swiss designer Adrien Rovero, were asked to design listening stations that materialise the sound they emit, generating a distinctive multi-sensory experience in the context of a public exhibition. On the occasion of the Design Days, the winners of the grant, Martin Stricker and Theo Luvisotto, present "Infinity", a visual and sound installation that invites the user to enter an infinite space. Visitors can look through an opening and feel the echo of their own voice, while seeing themselves in an infinite reflection. The openings are positioned at different heights, allowing children and adults to interact freely within the structure. The "Bambino" project by Bérengère Bussioz and Clémence Buytaert will also be on display. Jung-Ting Hu – Shuǐhuò “Shuǐhuò” is a Mandarin term that refers to the trade of a commodity through distribution channels that are not authorised by the original manufacturer or trademark proprietor. 水 (“Shuǐ”) in Mandarin means “water”, while 貨 (“huò”) means “goods”. However, since the commodity is not authorised, the quality is usually poor. Therefore, when we see poor quality products, we use the word “Shuǐ” to describe them.

Weichi He – Photonic "Photonic" is a serif typeface, resulting from the study and interpretation of the iconic “Cooper Black” originally released in 1922. The project re-imagines the blurry/rounded and heavy classic as a rational and constructed typeface. It further expands on how it would look as an extremely thin and delicate font (“Photonic White”), and how the interpolation in between can deliver a subtle and nuanced cut suitable for continuous reading (“Photonic Grey”). Janis Gildein – How to Hide, Being Present, Published between 1943 and 1967, “Der Kreis” was one of the first gay magazines in Switzerland, whose network grew internationally. As an editorial platform it developed a position and a visual language for the gay community. Sascha Bente – Rhetorik “Rhetorik” is a typeface family consisting of 16 weights. Its subliminal structure is based on a calligraphic model by Giovanni Francesco Cresci (16th century), the origins of which can be found in Walter Tiemann s “Orpheus” font (1926) and in Otl Aicher s “Rotis” (1988). Elise Connor – Searching for Kummo A family. The starting point is the colonisation of India. The only records we have are of the English men who settled there. The Indian women, their culture and identity were lost, erased. The only one we have left is called Kummo. When my grandfather Lionel arrived in London, he moved to Southall. This suburb is now known as “Little India”. The streets and signs are a testament to its cultural mix. This book aims to tell the suspended stories of my family and the visual forms they have taken, and sheds light on the women that have been erased by history.
DESIGN MANAGEMENT FOR START-UPS The research project Design management for start-ups focused on the integration of design in innovation processes. Its objective was to promote the use of design within mainly technological start-ups and to create tools and methodologies to foster collaboration between designers and entrepreneurs. Its objective was to promote the use of design within mainly technological start-ups and to create tools and methodologies to foster collaboration between designers and entrepreneurs. The approach took into account all design practices (industrial design, visual communication, media & interaction design, strategic design) and relied on the ecosystem of technological start-ups in the region. The study allowed for reflection at four levels: understanding the contribution of the different design disciplines in the innovation process; the analysis of the opportunities and constraints faced by entrepreneurs; the development of a set of tools for awareness raising and management of design-oriented innovation projects; supporting the strategic development of a start-up. Lou Rais – A Continent to Be Shaped “A Continent to Be Shaped” is a journey through alternative teaching in architecture. The book is an atlas from the archives of EASA, an alternative school created by students in Liverpool in 1981. Forty years of workshop data from authors across the continent have been systematically edited in a non-chronological journey, revealing the students local ideologies and issues. No architecture is shown in order to stimulate the reader s imagination, the archive is revived and extended with laser-cut silhouettes then modulated into an umpteenth construction. Prix BCV
Bruno Jolliet – New York Urban Atlas “New York Urban Atlas” is a project on the different ways in which urban density is physically transcribed in New York City. The book follows the principle of administrative residential areas by exploring the various neighbourhoods in the form of illustrations. Throughout the chapters the reader is led to explore urban materiality from an analytical angle with environmental factors relating to the illustrations. Map information provides insight into the various neighbourhoods explored in the book.
